Scandinavian DIY Stylized Shoot

There are two things we love around here, gorgeous inspiration and DIYs we can actually do. So this little post from Blush and Whim is sooo up our alley. Because not only do we have the pretty images in this gallery from Jaimee Morse, but there are also a few DIYs tucked below that aren’t only beautiful, but oh so doable. See even more from this shoot here.

From Jaimee Morse PhotographyI worked with a bunch of Minneapolis’ best wedding vendors to create this Scandinavian DIY stylized shoot. We created the shoot to have touches of Scandinavian with lots of natural and earthy tones. We also wanted to shoot it outside to capture the beauty that winter offers. We wanted the details in the shoot to be attainable by all brides so we created a bunch of DIY items such as a bouquet, floral crown, and décor. Also, our amazing hair and makeup artists gave us the “how-to” for the look the model’s are wearing.

BOHO CHIC HAIR IN 10 STEPS

1. Use a hair volumizing powder at the roots and backcomb the hair.
2. Gently comb the hair smooth.
4. Section the hair into 4 quadrants. Leave some hair at the nape of the neck out of the lower quadrants.
5. Make a loose braid in each quadrant.
6. Criss-cross the braids on top of the head and secure with bobby pins at the scalp.
7. Take the end of a rat tail comb or with the end of skinny makeup brush and gently lift and loosen the braids.
8. Take the remaining hair (at the nape of the neck) and softly twist several sections up into the style and secure with bobby pins.
9. Spray with a medium hold hair spray.
10. Scan areas that might need to be adjusted and sculpt into place with your hand. Secure with pins and spray to hold.

PRETTY IN PINK MAKEUP IN 10 STEPS.

1. Prep the skin with moisturizer and primer(s)- face, lid and lip.
2. Use 3 different hues of pink on the eyelid. Start with a darker pink with lash line to crease. A mid-tone pink in the crease. And a light and shimmery pink at the brow bone.
3. Use a mid-tone grey eyeshadow to line the top and bottom lash line. Use a clean brush to smudge and soften the line.
4. Use a black eyeshadow to do a tight line on the lash line and on the upper water line of lid.
5. Apply black mascara and then apply false eyelashes.
6. Use an ash- toned eyeshadow to define the brows.
7. Apply concealer in areas that need to be concealed or evened out- around the nose, cheeks, under the eyes.
8. Apply a tinted moisturizer that matches the undertone of skin all over the face.
9. Apply a blue based pink blush on the apples of the cheeks.
10. Finish with a pale pink lip gloss.

DIY BOUQUET

1. Wet green bouquet holder.
2. Start at the very bottom of the bouquet holder and place branches in a horizontal line around the front half of the bouquet holder.
3. Make sure to use thin branches because thick branches will tear up the bouquet holder and then fall out.
4. Work your way up the bouquet, creating row on top of row of branches until you’re a row or two from the very top.
5. Use a glue gun to secure any loose or larger branches into the bouquet holder.
6. Once the front is done, take small sprigs and place them in the back or where there is still green bouquet holder showing.
7. To add length to the bouquet wire the top of a branch to the bottom of a branch already in the bouquet holder. We only did this 3-4 times or else it was getting too heavy and looked misshaped.
8. Wrap something around the bouquet stem to make it look pretty. We used birch bark with some newspaper underneath to add width. But you could use fur, ribbon, or fabric!
9. If you’d rather not DIY your bouquet we would love to recommend Munster Rose, Studio Fleurette, and Ashley Fox Designs to create a bouquet that looks like this one here.

DIY CROWN

1. Start with a somewhat bendable branch of greens.
2. Wire two branches together with about a one inch overlay.
3. Wire the branches together on the other side to create a circles.
4. Repeat making circles until desired thickness is achieved and then wire branches together. We did this twice to create the thickness pictured above.
5. If wiring is showing, hot glue a leaf or two on wire to cover it.

DIY GLASSES

1. Get a space ready for painting by laying down newspaper.
2. Place tape around the bottom of stem of glass so there’s a straight chalk board line.
3. Paint the base of the glass with the chalkboard paint.
4. Let dry about 30 minutes.
5. Paint again 2-3 times.
6. Remove tape slowly.
7. Use chalk pen instead of normal chalk because normal chalk will scratch paint off of glass.

DIY BOTTLE CANDLES

1. Gather a collection of glass bottles in your desired height, shape, and color. We used all clear glasses.
2. Remove all labels and foils on bottles using Goo Gone or soaking in water for a while.
3. Purchase tapered candles in a variety of heights that are also tapered on the bottom to fit a standard size candle holder.
4. Gently twist the candles into the bottles until they are well secured.
5. Working in a warm environment will help the candles twist into the bottles without breaking.
6. You can quickly burn the edge of the candle closest to the bottle neck to secure if still loose. Make sure to do this quickly because it will cause black the candle to turn black.

Farmer’s Market Engagement in Minnesota

This looks a lot like my ideal saturday with my husband – gobs of coffee, a stroll through the local farmer’s market picking out some tasty treats for dinner that night. I think I would spend every day like that if I could. And while mine is a lot less picturesque (read screaming infant twins in tow) this Saint Paul engagement by The McCartneys is as gorgeous as they come. See even more right here.

From The McCartneys PhotographyYou know that kind of person who you spend your entire life looking up to? For me (Kelsy) that has always been my Aunt Susan, and she is the beautiful lady whose smile lights up each one of these photos!! In hopes of not spoiling my wedding day speech, as I am so excited to be standing beside Susan along with two others as one of her Matrons of Honor, I’m going to skip some of the mushy stuff and move onto how excited I am to see Susan the happiest I have EVER seen her!!

Susan & Eric were introduced by friends, and their very first date is exactly what inspired their engagement session! After meeting at the Black Dog Cafe in Saint Paul, MN for coffee on a Saturday morning, they ventured across the street to the Farmer’s Market and continued to talk for hours. Not only is that an adorable first date, it also lended itself to a cute and meaningful location for their photos!! After making our way through mounds of brussels sprouts and autumnal blooms, we headed to what we like to call Central Park (aka Historic Irvine Park) and were lucky enough to have just enough playtime before the rain came.

From the photographer… Marion and David’s love story began during Marion’s first days as a freshman at Brown University. David, an upperclassman and the older brother of Marion’s best friend, gallantly offered to “show her around.” Soon a romance bloomed. The couple became engaged years later when David proposed at home by hanging a diamond engagement ring on their Christmas tree.

Marion and her planner Stephanie Johnson of Park Place Planning set out to create a day that would suit Marion’s classic and timeless style. Though the couple resides in Florida, Marion knew from the beginning that she wanted to her wedding to take place in her home state of Minnesota, with a reception at the picturesque Woodhill Country Club where she spent the carefree summers of her childhood. The club’s rolling hills provided an ideal backdrop for the cocktail hour as well as views from the upper deck during the dinner and dance.

Since Marion and David were going to have many out of town guests, they prioritized showing everyone all the best that Minnesota has to offer. Upon arriving at the hotel, each guest received a thoughtful, comprehensive welcome box created by Park Place Planning. The box included colorful wayfarer-style sunglasses, mini Chandon champagne bottles, custom stir sticks, a crucial “recovery kit,” along with trail mix snacks and bottled water. The entire weekend was filled with parties so that everyone had multiple opportunities visit with the bride and groom. Since the wedding was happening during the Fourth of July week, they started off the festivities with a welcome party boat cruise around Lake Minnetonka, dining on ribs and chicken while watching the holiday fireworks over the water. The next night, they hosted their guests at a groom’s dinner at the historic Minneapolis Club. And after the wedding reception, everyone was invited to keep the party going after hours.

The wedding day began at the spacious and elegant Minneapolis bridal salon, L’Atelier Bridal Couture. Taking advantage of their “White Glove Service,” Marion and her ladies enjoyed a luxurious morning of pampering at this picture-perfect “getting ready” location. They spent the morning in the sun-lit space having hair done by Jon Charles Salon and makeup by Jett Makeup. Marion gifted her bridal party with matching robes from Plum Pretty Sugar for that extra touch of stylish comfort. The girls sipped Veuve Cliquot mimosas and noshed on gourmet snacks while getting ready. Marion was dressed in her classically elegant Vera Wang Luxe “Esther” gown from L’Atelier Bridal Couture. Marion and the ladies were personally styled by the owner, Amanda Kautt, before they were all whisked away to the church.

Following a traditional service, the wedding guests were led out of the church by a traditional bagpiper (honoring Marion’s Scottish heritage) and lined the majestic front stairs of St. Mark’s Cathedral for a celebratory send off as the just-married couple made their way to the 1956 Bentley S-1. The formal service now over, Marion transformed her dress by removing the lace jacket overlay which gave her a simple strapless silhouette suitable for dozens of congratulatory hugs (and the 90+ degree July temps!).

When it came to wedding details, Marion and David wanted to combine traditional wedding elements with thoughtful, personal details. The couple worked with Paperista owner Antoinette Ramos who designed a classic engraved gold monogram that tied together all the paper goods. Each engraved invitation included this stunning monogram and was personalized with a hand-calligraphed die-cut card and wrapped with a silk dupioni ribbon. The place cards echoed this design, each hand-calligraphed place card wrapping around a menu with gold engraved lettering. For the desert, Marion and David worked closely with Cocoa & Fig’s owner Laurie Pyle to design a five-tier wedding cake adorned with a cascade of fresh flowers and accented with “lace” frosting detail inspired by Marion’s gown.

Guests signed in with a Velvet Raptor guest book decorated with the couple’s monogram. The dining tables were punctuated by lush, classically white and pale pink tone centerpieces created by Jackie Just of Just Bloomed. Low arrangements of garden roses, hydrangea, and luscious peonies were balanced against stunning high floral pieces anchored on a dramatic crystal candelabras.

Following dinner and toasts the couple literally danced the night away, treating guests to an unforgettable musical performance from the Utah band Party Crashers complete with a Michael Jackson impersonator. The dance floor was still
completely full when it was time to send off the newlyweds. Guests lined up with sparklers, fitting for the 4th of July holiday, to light the way as Marion and David hopped on transportation leading to their after party hosted at Graves 601 Cosmos bar.

The couple enjoyed a honeymoon in Italy, touring Positano, Ravello and Tuscany.

Green & White Nautical Wedding

Deep down in my heart, I’m a nautical loving girl, so weddings like this pull heavily at my heartstrings. The thing I love the most about the day? The way Lasting Impressions and the gorgeous bride went with green and white… it was a fresh take on the nautical, lakeside soiree and I couldn’t love it any more than I do. The whole thing, as captured by Melissa Oholendt, is sitting pretty right here!

From the planner… Lisa and Chuck’s wedding took place on a stunningly beautiful June day in the backyard of Lisa’s childhood home on the shores of Lake Minnetonka. However, the festivities really started one month before the wedding when Lisa and Chuck traveled back to Minnesota to “Bury the Bourbon” in the exact location they were saying their vows and, true to the Southern tradition, their wedding day arrived carrying blue skies, mild temperatures and a light (perfect) lake-driven breeze that kept their custom L + C flag, designed by Lisa’s mom, waving all day long.

The day began, as all wedding days should, with the bride & groom surrounded by the people they love the most. The ladies sipped on Veuve upstairs in Lisa’s bedroom as the guys convened in the sunroom with a bottle of Pappy Van Winkle, a bourbon that, over the years, had become a tradition of celebration within their friend group.

From the gorgeous custom Kathryn Conover gown Lisa wore to the beautiful Anne M. Cramer skirts (a designer local to Minnesota!) that adored the bridesmaids to the groom’s custom blue linen suit by New York tailor Saint Laurie Merchant to the Collared Greens bowtie & ties that the groom and groomsmen wore, there was not a single detail left unattended.

They said their vows where the lake met the shore, with two of their closest friends as acting officiates. Excerpts from the Velveteen Rabbit were read & E.E. Cummings poem “I carry your heart with me (I carry it in my heart) was read in it’s entirety as it played a very special role in Lisa & Chuck’s past; when Chuck was deployed to Afghanistan, Lisa sent him with this poem on a piece of paper & Chuck has kept it in his wallet ever since. During the ceremony, Nicole Herzog – a very talented artist – started her work on a piece of artwork that would capture the essence of the day in painted form, including an appearance by Tucker – the family’s black lab – who played an excellent ring bearer.

Post-ceremony, the couple sent their guests off to cocktail hour as they took a boat ride across their favorite lake with a custom “Just Married” sign on the back. During cocktail hour, guests mingled in the gardens and were served champagne and the couple’s signature drinks; Chuck’s was his favorite “dark & stormy” and Lisa’s was her favorite “Lake Minnetonka Bootleg”.

With the couple having attended college together in the South and now residing in New York City, many of the guests traveled to Minnesota from all over the country; as such it was important to the couple to not only make sure that guests felt taken care of and loved in an elegant & comfortable atmosphere but also meld together pieces of their past & present, all while showing off everything that Minnesota has to offer. They enlisted Sarah Trotter with Lasting Impressions to truly execute their vision and not a detail was missed.

While the guests enjoyed cocktail hour, Sarah & her team were putting the finishing touches on the tented reception. Instead of working with the customary navy stripes that is often thought of for lakeside weddings, a palette of green and white was used with much of the greenery & florals from Weber’s Westdale consisting of ferns, hydrangeas and green mums to compliment the existing landscape & gardens.

Compasses helped guests find their seating assignments under the beautiful draped ceiling of the dinner tent from Après Party Rental with the table cards on display in nautical holders and named after different bays on Lake Minnetonka. Each table had both an elaborate hydrangea & fern based tall floral arrangement & beautiful rose based low floral arrangements to promote cross-table conversations. A fern was placed on top of the menu cards to tie in the look. The bride & groom’s chairs were draped with a floral garland as a special little touch of importance. The result was a stunning dinner setting that was both meaningful to the couple & allowed the lakeside setting to shine.

After dinner the guests were served both a piece of wedding cake & a piece of the pecan pie Groom’s cake and were invited to the dance tent as the dance floor officially opened with Belladiva’s band & singers keeping the tent packed all night long and late night snacks of mini-burgers were served by D’Amico Catering. At midnight, guests were ushered to the driveway to send off the couple in style with sparklers and treated to the perfect sweet treats, made by a local truffle maker in custom boxes by Letter Perfect. As the sparklers were lit and Lisa & Chuck made their sweet departure, guests were overheard commenting to their partners that they didn’t want the beautiful night to ever end.

The sign of a perfect wedding? We truly think so.

School Themed Valentine’s Day Shoot

Oh, young love.  The days of Jr. High dances, passing notes and singing along earnestly to the newest Bryan Adams’ love song… I think we can all agree, Valentine’s Day was sooo awesome back then.  So this darling school-themed shoot from Jody SavageCocoa & FigSimply Loves and Paperista is, well… basically the best thing ever.  See it all right here.

From Jody Savage Photography My stylist Shauna from Simply Loves and I wanted to design a shoot around the upcoming Valentine’s Day. We got to thinking about young love and when we were in school and received cute valentines from the boys we had crushes on and the idea for the shoot was born- centered around young, hopeful, innocent love.

We incorporated paper Valentine bags like when we were kids, but brought a sophisticated modern twist to it with the help of stationary extraordinaire Paperista. Overall we were going for a muted, romantic palate, not just the typical red or pink. We loved the light blue wedding gown Morgan was wearing and highlighted it with the invites and French ribbon on the table. Brent’s suit brought in the colors and textures in the invitations, flowers and ribbon.

We also wanted to bring in a bit of fun with the school theme by bringing in a chalkboard, desk, and globes. However, we played up the Valentine’s theme by adding a lovely backdrop of ribbon and bunting to reminisce about the school yard pretend marriages we had during recess- again with a sophisticated, romantic twist. We added chocolate hearts and tulips to surprise our lovely bride like many receive on Valentine’s Day from their loves.

Finally our table was just gorgeous and tied it in all together with the chalkboard slate table top, valentines bags on each place setting, chalkboard designs and beautiful flowers by the very talented Ashley Fox Designs.

And to top it all off Cocoa & Fig provided us with a number of different yummy desserts including macaroons, heart shaped pies, sugar cookies and a lovely icy white cake to go with our winter in Minnesota.

Minnesota Lakeside Wedding

I’ve always been fond of backyard weddings. Especially when that backyard happens to be the bride’s childhood home. It’s the sweetest of all “I do” locales, made EVEN sweeter through the lens of Laura Ivanova Photography. And while I could go on for days about the beautiful bloomage a la Mickey O’Kane Floral or the gorgeous styling by Sable Event Styling & Design, let me direct you to the full gallery for all that plus soooo much more.

From the Bride… Stephen and I met in Boston one week before I moved to Chicago, but we both knew we had found something too special to pass up. After two years of dating long distance, I moved back to Boston and we were engaged four months later. We wanted our wedding to be filled with special touches that delighted our guests and represented who we are as a couple. With all of our friends and family traveling long distances to be a part of the celebration, it was important to us that our guests were swept up in the day as much as we were!

My childhood home in Minnesota was the perfect backdrop for our vintage, garden party inspired wedding. The cocktail hour among the trees and tented reception beneath the flickering lanterns that hung from their branches set the perfect tone and allowed us to make the day completely our own. I especially loved crafting all of the elements myself – from the place cards to the table runners, the corn-hole boards to the welcome flags on every straw – it was amazing to see our dream become a reality. It was my favorite craft project to date and has inspired me to turn my creativity into an event styling business of my own!

We loved how Laura Ivanova Photography was able to so accurately capture the love and happiness we both felt throughout our wedding day. She captured all of the little moments that were so special to us, and will cherish for years to come. Our wedding was the most wonderful day in our lives to date, and we are so excited to be married!

Minnesota Wedding from Emily Steffen Photography

Yesterday we debuted our second edition of the Fashion & Beauty E-Magazine in all its gorgeous glory and to say this puppy is jam-packed with goodness is a gross understatement. To keep the party going, we thought it would be fun to dive a bit deeper into the 11 real weddings tucked inside its virtual pages. Up first is a Minnesota affair photographed by Emily Steffen with florals and design by Sadies Floral. Honestly, this Bride has one of the most infectiously adorable smiles we’ve come across and killer sense of style to boot. Have a look at the full gallery for even more and be sure to flip through the E-Magazine for the full spread.

From the Bride… When I started thinking about my dress I didn’t know where to start. I had made my own prom dresses in the past because I loved design so much and I love texture in clothing. For my wedding dress I really wanted something that had my design vision in it, including lots of texture. Since my demands were high I thought I would need to make it – but making a wedding dress! That’s a lot of work. On a whim I went to the beautiful and beloved store in Edina, Priscilla of Boston. That was it – five dresses later I said yes to my wedding skirt, top and veil. With the help from our awesome consultant at Priscilla I was able to piece it together! The bottom was a very textured – a full but soft chiffon skirt designed by Priscilla of Boston. I knew it was perfect when we matched it together with a Melissa Sweet sweetheart top with vintage crystals and small pearls! And last but not least, my favorite part, a Melissa Sweet long cathedral length veil! My veil did it for me and made me feel like a bride!!! It had lots of texture and detail around the edges. That was it-my dress was complete!

My advice to brides would be to not be afraid of texture! Mixing fabrics and textures, and even designers, can get you the exact outcome you want, making you feel like the bride you want to be!!! I also never thought that my wedding dress would be a two-piece, but that made it perfect! Be open to different things – it just might lead you to what you really want!

When deciding my color palette I knew that I wanted it to be a mix of very natural colors. I love Shattuck, my venue, and I really wanted the feel and details to enhance Shattuck and add to what was already there! Soft gray blue has always been my favorite color so I knew that was a must, but it’s not a very easy color to find. I decided to keep gray blue my focus but included any hue that brought to life the feel I was looking for.

For Shattuck’s Armory, the reception venue, I always kept in mind the big picture. The space was big, so I really focused on highlighting that fact. There were high ceilings so I showcased the height by bringing in tall curtains that gave the room an awe factor. Too much space can make the room loose an intimate feel, so over the dance floor we hung low twinkle lights. Playing with texture, ceiling level and room ambiance transformed the space from a gym to my dream venue.

So many things in my wedding I found by looking off the beaten path!! I always kept my eyes open for things. Most often that is when I found them, in the most random spots! It is easy now to get ideas from places. Keep those ideas in your mind and find things that you can help create your vision and bring life to your ideas.

Surprise 40th Birthday Party

I’m one of those people that sort of tries to pretend like my birthday doesn’t exist. The only surprise party I’ve ever had was when I turned 16 years old and my friends decorated my new car in maxi pads. I know! Anyway, I think that my tunes are a-changing after devouring this absolutely beautiful, girly goodness of a party that was hosted by some of the most talented wedding ladies around at White Peacock Styled Events! Click here to see the whole gallery with images by La De Da Photography.

We wanted to throw a chic surprise 40th birthday party, giving the classic girly tea party a sophisticated spin while transforming an unassuming space into something extraordinary. We used a white color palette to make everything feel crisp and elevated, while having soft frills of tassels around the room and small pops of pastel pinks and gold. We decided on hosting it at L’atelier Couture Bridal Boutique which is not only stunning in itself, but allowed us to be surrounded by white gowns galore!

We set a formal dining table in the middle of the space and draped tassels from the ceiling to create a grand entrance. The room’s celebratory look was topped off with several white paddle balloons floating throughout the space. The brick walls contrasted perfectly with our feminine decor, making the whole place feel city chic rather than over-the-top. We made sure our table setting was decadent, placing individual bottles of rose wine at each spot, with a place-card tag attached to each bottle. Gold accents were used in the table settings and we simply spread the center of the table with florals.

We served classic tea party fare, including scones, chicken salad and various tea sandwiches. Draping a beautiful flower garland over the birthday girl’s chair made her place extra special! A couple of different stations were placed around the rest of the room, including a tea bar for hot sips, a bubble bar stocked with champagne, and dessert tables full of cake and French macaroons. We had all of the guests dress in white to continue the girly, opulent feel of the party. These instructions were found on the party invitations, which were hand-delivered to each guests home. The invitations were written on scrolls and attached to a gorgeous frilloon (paddle balloon with tassels), brought to each girl’s door.

Everything came to life when the birthday girl arrived. She was overwhelmed by the space and the gathering of her dear friends. We gave her a flowered crown, popped some bubbly, and enjoyed the soiree to the utmost!

Eden Prairie, Minnesota Wedding from Munster Rose

A natural, green as can be setting can far outweigh any amount of man-made fanfare. Just have a look at this outdoor wedding captured by Geneoh for proof. Of course, not all of us are lucky enough to have a forrest canopy at our fingertips but taking a few cues from the styling of Munster Rose and you can add the look and feel of a wedding gone au naturel to your big day. Sometimes all it takes is wood accents and greenery wherever you can tuck it. Have a look here for more.

From the Bride… While in the midst our wedding planning, a wise friend told me, “The intangibles make the occasion.” This is certainly true; it is the moments, the careful thoughtfulness of the details, and the shared memories that I remember the most about our wedding day.

If I were to use 5 words to describe our wedding it would be, “togetherness”, intimate, natural, elegant, and simple. Wessel and I are simple people who value family, friends, our faith, simple beauty, and of course, each other. Thus, we tried to find a venue that was suitable for a small intimate wedding of our closest friends and family. This was tricky, as Wessel is from South Africa and I am from Minnesota, oceans apart. Even more, we both wanted all of our relatives and friends to be able to attend, but alas, we had to choose, and we decided on the Smith Douglas Moore House. The Smith Douglas Moore House was built in 1877 (we have a “thing” for the number 7), which has so beautifully been renovated into a coffee shop that maintains the charm of the 1800’s. The house had a large tree covered backyard, which we lined with wooden chairs and tables for both the ceremony and the reception, and we kept the inside of the house as a back-up for rain, and a mingling center during our cocktail hour. Note the future brides: always have a rain plan. We lucked out with beautiful weather, but I cannot tell you how many weddings get rained out, with brides that highly regret not making a successful rain plan.

Now, Wessel and I won the wedding lottery when we found out we were able to work with a group of amazing and talented individuals through the Midwest Wedding Project. It is beyond words how talented our these people are (as you can see from the photographs that Gene Pease of Geneoh Photography captured so eloquently.) Lizie of Lizie Anne Weddings and Proposals, was an absolute angel as our wedding planner, alongside the styling and floral design of miss Jackie at Munster Rose. I never knew how much help a wedding planner and florist/stylist could be, with their knowledge of vendors, itineraries, layout design etc. It turned my hypothetical dream board into a reality of soft white peony blooms, garlands, wooden accents, candles, and botanicals. Words can’t describe the work of these two. We also had the privilege of working with Harrison Collective on the invitations and programs, which literally made me squeal and cry when I first saw the designs. Brandon managed to capture our personality and style with the simple elegance we love, and a hint of our nautical wandering selves. Not to mention, the tied rosemary on the programs that made my heart so happy. Wessel and I wanted to include objects that tell stories, like the green glass candy dish that my grandmother handed down to me, and the wood burl table that my parents made from the wood of a redwood tree, our favorite family-made desserts, half log seating chart (courtesy of my cousins, brother-in-law and sister-in-law), and the wood burned sign, remembering all those that could not be with us on that special day. The final ambience was “besonders” (Afrikaans roughly translated: unbelievably beautiful and special.)

Then there was the day. Everything was perfect, as I walked on the arm of my dad and met Wessel under the trees. We cried and we laughed, and I tell you, that moment, holding his hands, and seeing his eyes, is what marriage is about. The other details are added blessings.

From the Vendors… Kate and Wessel were part of The Midwest Wedding Project. This project was created by local MN artists who wanted to give-back to the community and bless one lucky couple with their dream wedding. After hearing the modern-day love story of this Minnesota native and her South African fiance, we KNEW Kate and Wessel were the perfect couple for this Project. (Geneoh, Lizie Anne, Munster Rose and Harrison Collective are the founding members of the Midwest Wedding Project.)

Minnesota Winter Wedding from Paper Antler Photography

So I might be the most unpopular person in the the blogosphere for this…but I’m fully looking forward to winter. Because to be totally honest, I’m the kind of girl who’d prefer cozying up by the fireplace to laying out on the beach any day of the week. Crazy. I know. So when my favorites from Paper Antler sent over this elegant winter wedding in the dead of summer, it felt a little like Christmas morning. And if you happen to be a cold weather lover like me, I’m oh-so-certain you’ll be happy spending this August day right here.

From the Bride… My family’s home holds some of my most precious memories so we chose its country setting to set the tone for our wedding.  We paired this country house inspiration with our reception’s formal lakeside ballroom to create our French Country Formal theme.  The colors were held together by warm cream tones mixed with muted gold, as well as greyed blues and pinks.  We incorporated rich fabrics – a grandmother’s fur, velvet seats in a family sleigh, and brocaded lace.  To bring the “country” into our ballroom setting, we found handcrafted wood farm tables and adorned them with loads of votive candles next to reflective pieces – silver candelabras, gold vases, and mercury glass.  To soften the tables, we introduced full florals – heirloom English garden roses, hydrangeas, peonies and hints of soft greens.

Nautical-Inspired Photo Shoot from Jody Savage Photography

Since moving out to Boston, I’ve noticed a not-so-subtle shift in my closet. An invasion of stripes, navy and every East Coast cliché. So from the second I locked eyes with this nautical-inspired shoot from Jody Savage PhotographyCouture Fleur Boutique and Paperista, you better believe I was one smitten kitten. And whether you’re a Southern belle, call the humble Midwest home or live for that West Coast cool, 5 minutes in this gallery, and you’ll be embracing your inner prepster, too.

From Jody Savage Photography I was inspired by my love for the East Coast, Boston, Cape Cod and my home town of White Bear Lake, Minnesota. I feel like the nautical style is so classic and modern and romantic and it perfectly emulates my style in photography. My family enjoys sailing and watching the sailboats on our lake and I just feel so at home when I’m around the ocean or lakes. I had been planning for a year to launch my new website that launched about 2 weeks ago and I wanted some new portfolio shots that were really me – which inspired my shoot. The shoot actually took place at the White Bear Boat Works which is a huge part of my family as my husband runs his own business out of the Boat works called twin cities mobile marine on White Bear Lake, in White Bear Lake, MN.

Minnesota Wedding from Laura Ivanova Photography

When I think about the loveliest ways to say “I do,” beneath the branches of a centuries-old oak tree is the kind of setting that makes me stop and swoon. It’s the idea of quiet romance and perfect symbolism that’ll turn any hopeless romantic into a pile of mush right on the spot. And from the soft golden palette to the oak tree silhouette that carried throughout the day’s design, this Minnesota couple planned the perfect celebration with Premier Planning Services by their side. We’re lucky enough to see it all through the lens of Laura Ivanova, and there’s much, much more waiting right here.

From Laura Ivanova…Stella and Tim hosted such a unique celebration, centered around the ceremony that united them and husband and wife.  They chose to be married under a huge, centuries-old oak tree that held great symbolism for the couple.  They incorporated the oak silhouette in their wedding day stationery.  The soft golden colors and beautiful details were lovely (I could not stop gushing about them all day), but the things that resonate most to me, were the moments during the ceremony when Tim wiped the tears from Stella’s face. It was the moments when they couldn’t stop smiling at each other. It was really beautiful to witness. The ceremony was made even more personal, due to the fact that it was performed by Tim’s parents, who are pastors. After the morning ceremony, guests enjoyed a delicious lunch, toasts, and dancing to a 17 piece swing band!

St. Paul Wedding from Canary Grey Photography

Continuing today’s lineup of pretty is a St. Paul affair with all the style and spunk we wedding bloggers so love. It’s a modern approach to a romantic affair with a bit of whimsy thrown in for good measure. Put on your pinning pants and get ready to swoon, because these captures from Canary Grey Photography are knock-your-socks-off stunning!

From the Bride…Since Mike and I got engaged in the woods and have a love for all things modern and vintage, the inspiration for the wedding was organic woodland & modern vintage.  I knew right away I wanted the wedding to have a timeless look, nothing too flashy or kicthey, so I tried to keep all the grounding elements (wedding party attire, table cloths, etc.) grey and white and have fun with the details of the decor. Adding in a woodland creatures to the decor felt very us and then became another theme I tried to weave throughout the space, adding in the birch tree name holders and elements of fur.  We chose a venue where we could really have control over the look and feel rather than having someone else dream that up for us.  Due to the last minute weather forecast, it was too cold to hold our ceremony outdoors as originally planned.  The balloons were a last second add on in an effort to fill some of the space behind us during the ceremony… and it worked out very lovely!

I have a good friend who is a textile designer so I brought her photos that inspired me and together we adapted a color palette and came up with a design for the invites which we hand screen-printed (in my garage). That palette became the inspiration for the flowers and dessert table. I brought the invites to the bakery and florist so they had an idea of the colors and textures I was going for, but let them both have full rein of the final design. In the end they both nailed the look and far exceeded my expectations.

After picking up decorative items here and there for several months, it was somewhat hard to imagine what it would all look like together and since I couldn’t be there to decorate the space myself, I hired a wonderful coordinator who took the time to understand the look I was going for and nailed it while also coordinating all the vendors coming and going all day – what a job! In the end the look was one that evolved over time and couldn’t have happened without a lot of help from friends, family, vendors and the final product was even better than I had imagined it in my mind.

Minneapolis Wedding from Brandon Werth Photography and Lemon + Lavender

Sometimes we read the bride’s story and just know. Know she and her husband were like two puzzle pieces made for each other. A perfect fit. And then it’s a race to get to the images to see how perfectly their wedding complimented them. This was one of those weddings. Every detail from the invites (courtesy of Lemon + Lavender) to the fab florals from Munster Rose to the parting shot of the lovebirds looking over their reception was captured brilliantly by Brandon Werth Photography, and as luck would have it, we’ve got a whole gallery dedicated to these sweeties. Click here to see it!

From the stunning bride … I was a senior in college at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN and decided to sign up for a J-Term to Hawaii last minute. Rough, right? Like many other stories in my life, that decision happened for a reason. A pretty cute guy happened to be on that trip too. After a few casual walks on Waikiki and a flirty bus ride to Pearl Harbor, the rest is history. We dated for five years and he proposed under the arches at St. Thomas (a Tommie alum tradition) in December of 2012.

Much like our fateful trip to Hawaii, our relationship has always been filled with moments of meaning and purpose. We are both passionate people who believe in celebrating heritage and pieces of life that make us who we are – our own puzzle per say. We knew our wedding would have to reflect this. Our engagement photos were shot at a Minneapolis cafe where my grandparents met, my veil was crafted out of my moms veil (my something old) and I wore both of my grandmothers’ wedding rings on my wedding day (something borrowed). These are just a few examples how we infused meaning and ‘us’ into our day.

The Calhoun Beach Club has always topped my list of wedding venues. The high ceilings, contemporary decor and views of Lake Calhoun can’t be beat. It was perfect. We chose to have a traditional Catholic ceremony and Holy Cross was a church that also had meaning – my paternal great grandfather help build it in the early 1900s and it’s the largest Polish church in Minneapolis (I’m of Polish heritage). It provided a stunning setting for our simple yet gorgeous ceremony.

Another priority for us was music. We literally wanted our guests to dance the night away and we knew a live band was the way to make this happen. The R Factor kept most of our 220 guests on their feet all night. The food was another highlight. D’Amico is notorious for delicious eats and impeccable service – and they met every expectation. From the professional staff to the details on every handmade cupcake, they were absolutely delightful.

Ben and I made it a priority to make every single guest feel welcome, comfortable and at ease. All day. My girls selected dresses that they felt best in, shuttles provided worry-free transportation for 80+ out of town guests and every hand-selected vendor made us feel like we were their only wedding of the year. Our priority was to ensure every decision felt like us – not our parents or friends. The pieces of life we value most are family, friends, purpose and love. Looking back, we know our wedding encompassed all of these. And that made it perfect.

Minneapolis Wedding from Brandon Werth Photography

I’ve never ever tire of pouring over a gorgeous, well-planned wedding. And when one such wedding is captured through the lens of Brandon Werth, you can bet it’s going to be crazy beautiful. Crafted with an urban influence and subtle nod to European design, this Minneapolis affair encompasses everything I love in one stunning swoop. The full gallery is bursting at the seams with pin-perfect inspiration and the heartfelt film by MyGuyMedia? Let’s just say it’s simply too good to miss.

From the Bride…We wanted a wedding that fit the love that we share together complete with a traditional Catholic ceremony and fairytale ending.  When we started planning we laid out our priorities and our main focus was that we wanted a fall wedding with a weekend full of events to share with family and friends, all 175 of them.  Being that the groom’s mother is beyond amazing at what she does (floral artistry and overall design) we talked through the vision of the events and they were executed without a hitch!  Naming our theme as European inspired with an urban flair, I didn’t even see how the table decor was going to look before I walked into the room on the wedding night…I was speechless!  She worked around the clock (literally) to pull off these events that were truly perfection!

We kicked off the wedding weekend with a groom’s dinner on Thursday evening at a beautiful property in the country (Independence, MN).  Friday was a day to spend with our respective wedding parties.  On Saturday morning to kick off our wedding day, the girls got luxury treatment at l’atelier couture where I purchased my beautiful dress designed by Elizabeth Fillmore.  The “White Glove Service” as they call it was wonderful, the ladies prepared the boutique for our arrival and had our dresses steamed and a few surprises along the way.  We brought in hair and makeup for everyone complete with mimosas, coffee and bites.  One of the surprises they had in store for me was a sketch that Elizabeth Fillmore did herself of my gown, talk about amazing, I was shocked!  It was truly a luxury to get ready there, every girl’s dream!

The ceremony was so meaningful to us because it was in the church that I grew up going to and we were able to say our vows in the religious setting that we wanted.  We wanted the focus to be around the ceremony without adding much flair to the church and did just this!  Our guests went to cocktail hour after the ceremony where they were greeted with drinks, h’orderves, and a vintage photo booth.  When we arrived at the reception we had a receiving line into the dinner room to greet everyone.  The venue is gorgeous and has so much character as a blank slate, but we dressed it up with up lighting and old world chandeliers over the head table.  There were three styles of tables (round, banquet, and square) along with three styles of linens, two styles of chargers, and different table centerpieces at each table.  Each table had a unique design and the asymmetrical tables made it feel less formal.   We also brought the outdoors in by placing trees around the room for a natural look.  We wanted guests to feel the love in the room by setting up an intimate feel with a soft palette of colors and a playlist of love songs that we picked out for dinner.

The details of the evening were necessary to us so every guest felt important.  We did this by having each guest write an anniversary message in a wine bottle and walk away with CD souvenir filled with love songs we picked out.  One of my favorite details was the animal/carrot figurines we used on each guest’s plate to designate which meal they ordered.  When I look back, what really made our wedding special was the memories from our lives through a slideshow we created and the speeches from our loved ones.  After the tears, the band kicked off playing and the rest of the night is history!  For a couple that enjoys true nature as much as they do downtown living; this wedding event was one of a kind.

My favorite thing about our wedding is that it truly was a calibration of all our talents, a full family affair!  The love that was put in was felt in the outcome.  Bob’s mom was the mastermind behind all of the design elements and Bob and I filled in with the details.  We spent many weekends printing name tags and painting table décor.  A mother and her three sons made this day happen, and they really went above and beyond!

Minnesota Wedding from Jeff Loves Jessica

Wedding Wednesday is here yet again for your much needed dose of mid-week pretty. And while every SMP wedding is beautiful in its own right, I think today’s slew of features are especially stunning. We’re starting it all off with a blush-toned beauty set amongst a Minnesota flower farm. The whole day was documented by Jeff Loves Jessica, and there’s also a film from eMotion to tie everything together.

From Jeff Loves JessicaWe are so thrilled to share images from perhaps the most beautiful wedding we photographed all year!  Andie & Andrew’s September day at Camrose Hill Flower Farm in Stillwater, MN was complete bliss.  Both the bride & groom are wonderfully creative and they did an amazing job of turning their wedding day dreams into reality and a magnificent experience for their guests.   Their soft, pastel color palette, elegant floral design by Cindie (the flower farm owner), and divine details combined with a whimsical outdoor setting made this perfectly planned day gorgeous beyond words!  Even more radiant than their lovely details, was Andie & Andrew’s unmistakable, tremendous joy in marrying each other!  They waited to see each other until Andie walked down the aisle, where they exchanged heartfelt personal vows, surrounded by so many dear friends and family!

From the Bride….As I write this entry, I can’t help but think how exciting it is that our wedding will be on a blog. Not just any blog but Style Me Pretty, the site that consumed hours of my time every week while planning. I drooled over every detail and at times was lost in the endless possibilities of pretty things. It can be overwhelming at times to think about all the options you have – and believe me; we had to make all those decisions on colors, caterers and cake. But for me and Andrew it was simple. Our big day was about us – a guy and girl that love each other. We focused on throwing a great party, celebrating with all our friends and family while sharing a very intimate moment – showcasing our love and committing to one another for the rest of our lives.

For our special day, we only looked at one venue and our mind was made up. Camrose Hill Flower Farm had the perfect combination of vintage glam and down-to-earth. We could have chandeliers and at the same time, a bonfire for s’mores. Converted from a dairy farm, the land is now owned and operated by Cindie Sinclair, who is also the florist. Cindie converted abandoned farm fields into beautiful gardens and old barns into workshops. The farm will always have a special place in our hearts and I know we’ll visit for years to come.

And then, we have our lovely photographers. I first discovered Jeff loves Jessica on Style Me Pretty. I saw a beautiful shoot and realized that it was done locally in Minnesota. I called them immediately. We clicked instantly with the adorable husband and wife team, a couple so sweet and smiley that you immediately feel in good company. They captured so many amazing moments from our wedding and engagement shoot. Memories that we cherish so much, we truly can’t thank them enough!

Like most couples, the months leading up to the wedding were filled with DIY Projects. We were busy making beanbag boards, cake stands, signs, blankets and table numbers…you name it. We involved our friends and family as much as we could, for projects and for the big day itself. Our friends played all the music during the ceremony and were our DJ and Emcee for the reception. We even recruited our super-star aunt to be our day-of coordinator. Our parents and siblings supported us along the way and we truly couldn’t have done it without all their help!

While the aesthetics of the day were everything we hoped for, the most beautiful part was being surrounded by all our loved ones. It’s true what they say that it goes by in a flash, but it is the most wonderful flash that a couple in love could ever wish for. Thanks to everyone who made September 22, 2012 the best day of our lives…so far!

Duluth Wedding from Laura Ivanova Photography

There is one color I fell head over heels with a long, long time ago, and it has never quite left my heart. So when a wedding with a palette built around a mint dominated ballroom pops up on my radar, it’s like instant swoon. Laura Ivanova Photography‘s dreamy images captured a wedding so deserving of the adjective “perfect” it left me breathless, thanks to the sophisticated palette and the extra sweet love. Click here for more!

From the photographer … Kerstin & Erik were married in Duluth, MN… a beautiful city in northern Minnesota on Lake Superior and Kerstin’s hometown.  They found a gorgeous, classic ballroom in downtown Duluth to host their party and based their color palette and many of their design choices off of the ornate design of their venue.  A medallion on the ceiling became a design element in their letterpress wedding stationery, and their elaborate 5 tier cake took inspiration from the color of the room.

From the bride … Erik and Kerstin decided to get married in Kerstin’s hometown of Duluth, Minnesota.  Since the majority of their wedding guests were coming from out of town, Erik and Kerstin decided to plan a weekend full of activities for their guests.  On Friday, the couple hosted a private screening of Casablanca–one of Erik’s favorite movies–at the Zinema 2 cinema in downtown Duluth.  Guests munched on popcorn, and they could fill their own candy bags with a selection of black and white confectionary treats.  The black and white sweets table was designed to match the wedding’s color scheme and to mirror the classic feel of the film.

Their wedding ceremony was held at Old Main Park, which was once the location of the University of Minnesota Duluth’s chemistry building.  The four story brick and stone building was constructed in 1901, but it later burned down in 1993.  All that remains of the building today are a few archway ruins, indicating what was once the front wall and side entrances to the building.  Kerstin had first discovered this unique park in elementary school, because her neighborhood soccer team held practices on the abandoned field.  Kerstin and Erik decided that this park was perfectly suited to the timeless and classic feel they envisioned for their big day, and they liked the idea of being the first couple to hold a wedding there.

Erik and Kerstin incorporated many different wedding traditions into their ceremony.  Specifically, in lieu of a unity candle, Erik and Kerstin participated in a Hands Ceremony.  This ceremony is related to handfasting, a ceremony of bethrothal that dates back to pre-Medieval times.  During this ceremony, Kerstin and Erik held hands, and the Reverend blessed these hands so that the bride and groom may continue to build a loving relationship together.  Additionally, in order to wish the couple a loving and joyous union, the guests recited an Irish blessing for the bride and groom, and they threw lavender and rang small bells as the bride and groom recessed.  The couple also had a string trio play traditional Irish songs prior to and following the wedding ceremony.

The wedding reception was held in the Greysolon Ballroom.  Kerstin has always loved this beautiful, historic building, which was once deemed one of the finest hotels in the continent when it was built in 1925.  The bride and groom used the ornate crystal ballroom as the inspiration for their wedding theme: they incorporated images of the gold moulding flowerettes on the ballroom’s ceiling in their wedding invitations and even on their cake!  In addition to using the reception venue as a source of inspiration, the couple also incorporated elements of black and white in order to give the event a classic, timeless feel.

Erik and Kerstin included many special touches into their wedding reception.  Kerstin’s mom, Melanie Grune, hand-knit a unique, colorful pair of socks for each of the groomsmen, and she made personalized beach bags in bold, floral prints for each of the bridesmaids.  Additionally, the couple incorporated elements of French culture into the wedding reception: the couple’s first dance was to the French classic “La Vie en Rose” by Edith Piaf, and, in lieu of a traditional guest book, guests signed “La Vie en Rose” records.  Guests had a choice of a variety of wedding favors, which included small French soaps, French candies, and mini-champagnes.  The couple also hosted the “Just Married Mojito” as their signature cocktail and local beers from Minnesota’s north shore during the evening’s festivities.

Minnesota Wedding from Munster Rose + Emma Freeman Photography

In my book, a sweet Midwest wedding is about as good as it gets. And while there may be no rugged coast or that special California sun, it’s the sense of homey charm and timeless design that makes this wedding so all-around lovely. Add in the peach and ivory blooms from Munster Rose plus a ball gown made for dance floor twirling, and you’ve got a recipe for an unforgettable day. Emma Freeman Photography caught all the details just perfect for pinning and you can see it all right here.

From Munster Rose: Classic and timeless, with personal touches, tasty sweets, and possibly the most gorgeous couple you’ve ever seen. That pretty much sums up this vineyard wedding captured by Emma Freeman. Kathryn and Mike met while in college at The University of Minnesota. Mike hails from Ohio, and Kathryn is a Minnesota native. Since the couple are midwesterners, they chose a location that encapsulates the beauty of this region. Morgan Creek Vineyard in New Ulm was perfect (and also in Kathryn’s hometown) Kathryn wanted the decor to compliment the outdoor setting, while maintaining the sophisticated feel of this affair. Add to that a touch of fancy-DIY and the day would be perfect.

For flowers we chose a tasteful palette to compliment the attendants’ navy dresses. Hues of white, ivory, dusty gray, peach, and fresh green were perfect for this outdoor soiree. We used romantic petal-y blooms with bits of foliage, designed in vintage silver, mercury, and etched glass containers. To this classic design Kathryn added personalized touches– chalkboard wine glasses, paper fans, and a hand-built riddling rack. The riddling rack served as a place for guests to offer words of advice and well wishes to her and Mike on their anniversaries to come. It was one of the first things Kathryn knew she wanted at her wedding. After much debate and many offers to “just buy one” Kathryn’s dad finally built her this rack. And it was gorgeous. Throughout the whole process Kathryn’s go-to source for inspiration was Style Me Pretty. She drew on colors, florals, and projects she had seen on SMP throughout her months of planning. With so many SMP details, (plus desserts from Cocoa and Fig), what could make for a better day?

From the Bride: When I think about our wedding so many beautiful memories come to mind – reading the vows we wrote together, the gorgeous flowers, dancing with my father. It was absolutely the most perfect day. As a little girl though I didn’t dream about my wedding, what color the flowers would be or what my dress would look like when I twirled. All I really knew when we got engaged is that I wanted to celebrate our wedding outdoors surrounded by all of our closest family and friends. After months of searching for the perfect venue, Mike and I stumbled upon Morgan Creek Vineyards, a family-owned winery nestled along the hillside just outside of my hometown, on a weekend trip to visit my family. It was the middle of January and completely covered in snow, but the minute I stepped out of the car I knew it was where we were supposed to be married. I later learned the winery only holds four weddings a year, so I couldn’t believe it when they said they still had a date available. I don’t think I stopped smiling for a week!

Once we decided on the venue we jumped into planning mode. I spent hours poring over inspiration on Style Me Pretty and in magazines. Mike and I both agreed we wanted our wedding to be personal and a lot of fun for our guests. My mother helped with each of the DIY projects from the chalkboard menus and table runners to the adorable bowtie for my nephew, the ring bearer. My father made the riddling rack to hold the wine bottles that our guests placed notes of advice and well wishes in, my favorite piece of our décor. Guests found their table on an old window pane that we found at the local antique store my mother and I visit often. The outline of the oak tree that sits at the base of the vineyard tied our stationary together. We served wine and gourmet wood-fired pizzas made by the winery and beer from the local brewery (America’s second oldest family-owned brewery!) We used a dessert stand from my late grandmother’s collection and I carried her handkerchief in my pocket. Guests enjoyed the photo booth set-up by our wonderful photographer and danced night the away to music hand selected by Mike, right down to the very last song.  And at the rehearsal the night before, we offered a tour of the brewery for the bridal party and served our favorite ice cream from Mike’s hometown of Columbus, Ohio at my favorite café.

Planning an outdoor wedding in Minnesota in the middle of July proved to be a bit of a challenge, but when the day came our amazing vendors didn’t miss a beat and the day went off without a hitch! One of our favorite moments was pausing at the top of the hill overlooking the crowd of sparklers held by all of our family and friends that traveled across the country to celebrate with us, feeling so grateful and incredibly loved.
