Classic + Romantic Library Wedding

As an avid reader, I can fully appreciate the beauty of hosting your special day at the place where all true love stories lay – the lovely library. Blush & Whim created a fairy tale for this adorable couple filled with books and beautiful blooms by Studio Fleurette, captured oh so perfectly by Amanda Nippoldt – see it all, from start to happily ever after in our VAULT right this way!

From Blush & Whim… Stunning river views, vintage details, and a venue that houses all the great love stories… Liz and Bryant’s September wedding couldn’t have been more romantic. The entire day was styled to perfection and brought a light, airy vineyard vibe to the Stillwater Public Library Rooftop. Liz stayed true to love and literature with place cards styled as bookmarks and old books styled into the design. The romantic theme was brought to life at the reception with lovely flowing lace and brass candelabras draped in lush greens. The entire event was held under a transparent tent thin enough to see the blush sunset and starry night sky. Bouquets from Studio Fleurette truly stole the show, with their loose, wild blooms and flowing silk ribbon accented against the pretty pale pink maids. Lemon leaf escort cards, naked cakes, and driftwood table numbers added an organic feel that completed the design beautifully.

Elegant Nautical Wedding at White Bear Yacht Club

Within minutes of gazing upon Jeff Sampson’s pics, I found myself Googling how to recreate this adorable Bride’s braided hairstyle – and this chic style was only the beginning of one fantastic fete. From the new Mrs’s Jenny Yoo dress and her dapper groom to all their guests laughing the night away thanks to The Traveling Photo Booth, it’s was a nautical night to remember. See it all in our VAULT right here!

From the Bride… Bart told me he wanted to marry me about two months into dating while I was vacationing in Belgium, but we officially were engaged about seven months later. After a long week, Bart suggested we meet up at the yacht club and go for a walk along the breakwall. He brought along some sparklers and while I was jumping and spinning, he got down on one knee. I remember the waves crashing against the wall and his kind words. I couldn’t have been more excited!

We started planning right away and were pretty excited to take on the project together. As we went, we decided together which of our talents would be used in what areas, as well as what parts we wanted to do together. We spent pretty much the whole year planning but enjoyed the process and using our creativity in new ways.

I am from Minnesota and Bart loves the state. We knew at some point we wanted to move there, but also wanted to incorporate our love for sailing and the role Chicago Yacht Club played in bringing us together. Both we and Bart’s parents are members. The first place I had ever been sailing was on White Bear Lake and I had fond memories of the club. White Bear Yacht Club was the first and only venue we visited. We felt right at home among the sailboats and vintage photos on the walls, and loved the Minnesota charm and history. Standing in the middle of the dining room, you could almost picture all the great parties that had taken place in this little gem in the woods over the last hundred years. We booked it that day without hesitation! I have been a member of Church of the Assumption and love the inclusion and commitment to service.

I wanted a gown that was light and airy, yet classic and chic. When I put on my A-line Jenny Yoo gown, I loved that it was two pieces and could imagine it blowing in the breeze. Satin on the bottom with a chiffon overlay, yet details on the straps and waistband made it feel regal. I chose a long veil for the church for the long aisle, and reasoning, when are you going to get to wear it again?! After trying on about 20 pairs of shoes, the Jimmy Choo sole not only felt the most comfortable, but the metallic was so fun without sticking out. I found great jewelry that had a vintage feel at J.Crew, but for the ceremony I wanted to wear the real thing: a 1910’s necklace worn by my great grandmother at her wedding.

I had four bridesmaids, and I picked the color (strawberry) and material (silk chiffon) from J. Crew but then let each of them pick their style since I didn’t want them perfectly matching. Their silver shoes were from Aldo, but I also gave metallic Sperry Top Siders to each of them as a gift for later on in the evening. Each bridesmaid also chose their own jewelry. They all picked their hairstyles but I encouraged the entire wedding party to consider incorporating braids into their look.

We wanted the groomsmen to look like a well put together sailing team, with Bart in navy, and the guys in matching gray suits, with a common thread of leather accents and striped coral and navy ties. Bart wore an Italian linen Ludlow suit from J.Crew in navy. All guys wore Sperry for J Crew ‘1-eye canoe’ shoes in brown. Guys also all had matching brown belts, and coral/navy ties fromJ.Crew. Groomsmen suits were great J.F. Ferrar from J.C.Penny, and white shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt.

Our theme for the wedding was ‘chic sailing summer camp in Minnesota’. The sailing part was a must, but Bart and I also have fond memories of summer camp, and we wanted to capture the feel of summer on the water in MN, filled with fun activities, mini adventures, and making friends. My favorite kind of regatta is a blustery day by the water, with the burgees flying in the wind, sailboats heeled over with all of their crew on the rail barely hanging on, and a threat of Gale winds. Although everyone is getting absolutely soaked, there is a sense of excitement and fun and returning to the club feels like a refuge. This actually ended up being the weather on our wedding day. I was immediately drawn to the idea of navy and gray, but wanted to brighten it up with a pop of pink/coral, similar to how the spinnakers add this great pop of color to the mass of gray and white sails. We loved the feel of the yacht club’s many spaces and wanted them each to be inviting in their own way. Lastly, we wanted the day to be a celebration of our love with our friends and family, but not ‘all about us’. We skipped things that felt un-inclusive, awkward, or cliche. There was no bouquet toss, garter removal/throw, cake cutting, or grand entrance. Instead we took a ‘let’s include everyone’ approach and tried to create a fun guest experience.

Bart carefully designed everything: the save the date cards, the invites, programs, escort cards, menus, and gift bag tags. Bart started out by designing an emblem, almost with the look of a stamp that included the White Bear Yacht Club burgee and our names. The save the date cards used a nautical rope-like font which we carried throughout the rest of the stationery. There was a common theme with everything printed that included our colors and coordinating font, but Bart had fun making each piece unique. Much of the stationery also included cut out pictures and stripes. For the invitations, we kept it formal but fun. The top read ‘Holy Matrimony!’ The invitation pieces (hotel information, response card, directions and invite) stacked such that the heading of each was revealed when the envelope opened.

Bart also designed tons of stationery and print for the reception – menus, activity list, bar menus, and signs for the photo booth, cards, s’mores, and burgee carried a common theme throughout the space. Signs were either framed in silver frames with nautical rope accents or placed in menu clips. Each guest was given an activity list on their place card with a full bar menu on the back to encourage an evening of fun. While it’s time consuming to DIY on such a big project, several editors throughout each of our families helped us catch any typos and style errors before everything went to print. All of the artwork was designed in Adobe Illustrator and printed on 100 to 130lb white card stock by MinuteMan Press. Escort cards were displayed on painted canoe paddles with individual hooks for each guest. Cards were watercolor painted and handwritten, with sailing line knots to hang them from the hooks. Paddles were
hung in the entryway.

I was escorted down the aisle by my dad. Ave Maria was played at the wedding, as it had been in my mom and grandma’s weddings. I wore a vintage gold necklace that had been worn by my great grandma at her wedding. Our unity candle was a carved/engraved birch base with our initials and a heart, which matched the birch base of the table numbers, purchased on Etsy. The Minnesota shaped ring bearer pillow was also a favorite.

Painted canoe paddles with hooks were hung in the entryway. From each hook was a watercolor place card hanging from knotted sailing line. Reception tables were outfitted with hurricane lamps, sailboat table numbers, various vases and menus on one side with an activity list for the day on the other. Numbers were carved sailboats, created by Tom Kraemer (tomanddi@cheq.net), a wood furniture builder in Cable, Wisconsin, who my mom met while shopping at a farmer’s market. He actually built the boats to scale from a Sonar sailboat (the kind Bart gave lessons on) design we sent him. We painted and stained them ourselves. The hurricane lamps from Pottery Barn were especially special to me. Last fall I had brought three lamp options over to my Grandparent’s home after a day of wedding shopping as they loved to hear the planning details. My grandfather looked at me very definite and said “That one! It’s like the kind we had on my coast guard ship in WW2!” He passed away two months later, so it was lovely to have feel his presence and light literally at every table. We knew that we did not want a ‘matchy matchy’ wedding, more a feel and vision throughout. Rather than choosing a single vase and flower type for the tables, I gathered 70 different vases from friends, family and various small stores, then gave the florist the direction of ‘light airy white and coral flowers’ and let them go crazy. I loved the result of their creativity and how each table looked a little different and unique!

The yacht club place settings included the burgee which felt perfect for our wedding. Each place setting had the two sided activity list/cocktail menu and a Minnesota shaped sugar cookie. Lanterns lit the way down a path from the yacht club building to the water that encouraged guests to explore the grounds. At the end of the path there was an outdoor bonfire with s’mores. Creative signs designed by the groom were scattered about along with various flower vases. Near the entrance to the dining room was a table filled with wedding photos from our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents. A Pottery Barn box which resembled a vintage box you would use on a boat to put fish or tackle in was used for cards. The yacht club living room and parlor carried the theme of flowers for a warm, inviting feel. In the living room guests could snap a photo of themselves in the photo booth and sign the burgee. Round tables were more clustered and long tables vases spread out in a line, but each and every table was different!

PHEW! That’s it!

Romantic + Industrial Minneapolis Wedding with Swedish Traditions

Full of feminine details and nods to Swedish traditions, this duo transformed an industrial Minneapolis event center into a vision of Scandinavian glamour.  And with a team of vendors like Munster Rose (can you believe that gorgeous floral chandelier?!), Lovely Bride, Julie Swenson Beauty, The Traveling Photo Booth and Geneoh behind the camera, it was a perfect marriage of style and tradition. See it all here.

From Blush And WhimKeeping true to the Swedish tradition of getting married in the hometown of the bride, Brita and Henrik hosted their June wedding at MUSE Event Center in the stylish North Loop of Minneapolis, MN. With a large majority of their guests traveling to Minnesota from Sweden and NYC, Brita + Henrik decided to infuse their wedding with a fresh, coastal feel, full of feminine details and thoughtful nods to Swedish tradition. Dreamy watercolor, lush florals, and airy draping and sweet white cafe lights gave the modern space the perfect touch of Scandinavian glamour. Guests were greeted with Swedish Mules and rhubarb infused cocktails before taking their seats for the ceremony. An 8 foot floral wreath/chandelier designed by the oh-so talented Jackie of Munster Rose stole the show, hanging above the couple as they said their vows and later as they danced the night away. This nordic design element was also continued in small greenery wreaths, adorned on the heads of Brita and Henrik’s many flower girls.

Cocktail hour featured a bevy of candles and vintage lounge furniture, an intimate and cozy spot to sit and enjoy the dixie land style jazz of Davina and the Vagabonds.

During the reception, white washed vineyard cross back chairs were the perfect coastal touch, accented against the raw linen, hemstitch napkins, and glassware that lined the harvest style tables. Guest were escorted to their tables with calligraphed watercolor cards, all hung on a canvas creating a lovely piece of art.

The dinner was full of Swedish traditions, complete with a Swedish “toast master” who hosted the entire dinner that featured over 15 songs, toasts, speeches and oh-so many Swedish kisses for the bride.

Vintage Glam Minnesota Outdoor Wedding

When a Bride admits that she used SMP as her wedding reference from the get-go, you KNOW it’s bound to be a pin-worthy affair. And with Geneoh behind the lens, this vintage inspired fete proves to be all that and more. From the serenading Groom to the sequined studded Bridesmaids’, it’s a gallery that sparkles with serious style.

From the beautiful Bride…While we had a specific design aesthetic in mind when planning, the most important thing to us was that our day reflected our love. We wanted people to not just see that but feel it. We’d been dating for eight years before we got married so by now everyone knew us well as a couple. What people maybe didn’t get to see as often was just how deep our love ran. Ultimately, we wanted the day to recall those feelings of first falling in love again. We kept coming back to that in every element of our planning.

Phil and I elected to not use a wedding planner. Phil is a professional pianist and vocalist and has played at hundreds of weddings so he had a lot of ideas he had been collecting along the way and I used Style Me Pretty to gather all of our décor ideas. Our florist, Dani at Studio Fleurette, was a huge help too!

Although we’d been living in Los Angeles at the time, we elected to get married back in our home state of Minnesota. We chose a golf club located just miles from where we both grew up. We immediately fell in love with the sprawling hillside view and gorgeous draped tent. When it came to colors, we chose a soft color palette to evoke a natural, organic aesthetic. Adding gold accents and three large crystal chandeliers added the perfect amount of glamour to the tent—which we used for both the ceremony and the reception.

Since Phil is a professional musician, the music was one of the most important elements of our day. As guests shuttled into the ceremony, we had a string quartet playing “Bittersweet Symphony” and I walked down the aisle to Christina Perry’s “A Thousand Years.”

We chose to write our own vows (which we could barely get through because we were crying so much) and my sister and brother-in-law sang a couple of our favorite Christian songs to reflect on the real reason we were standing at the altar! We walked out to Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida.”

Cocktail hour was held inside of the golf club while the tent was flipped for the reception. When guests came back into the tent they were welcomed by an acoustic set performed by one of our favorite local singer/songwriters (who happens to sound just like Jason Mraz!). He also sang “Wanted” by Hunter Hayes for our first dance.

Perhaps the most meaningful part of the night (and my favorite) was Phil’s surprise performance after dinner. He pulled me over to the piano, sat me down and sang a few songs to me. That moment was so special because it represented not just a romantic gesture, but so much of what we’d been through as a couple. Phil’s music career has been a journey we’ve been on together and I couldn’t be more proud of how far he’s come.

The night ended with an impressive fireworks display coordinated to our favorite songs including Lana Del Rey’s “Young and Beautiful”—which was selected as the soundtrack to our wedding video. Reflecting back on our day, we get teary eyed just thinking about it. It was the culmination of so much love and joy. It really was the best day of our lives!

Springtime Botanical Specimen Wedding Inspiration

Florals are often a main focal point of any wedding, but botanical specimens are something new! This stunning Jody Savage-shot inspiration shoot from Splendid Supply Co. brings florals to the forefront, with some gorgeous blooms from FiftyFlowers, yummy bites from Chowgirls, and a stunning model Bride, whose look was fresh and springy, thanks to Julie Swenson and the team from A And B Bridal. See it all right here!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/129804945 600 338]

From Splendid Supply CoOur shoot’s inspiration started with 19th century botanical specimen illustrations and gardens. Instead of opting for a more traditional vintage approach, our team, led by Maddy of Splendid Supply Co., created a contemporary twist by infusing a modern color palette and a whimsical, Anthropologie-like approach to the execution. Photographed by Jody Savage and coordinated by The Simply Elegant Group, this shoot is fresh and perfect inspiration for a late spring or early summer wedding.

Starting with the concept of terrariums pulled from the vintage inspiration, Dani from Studio Fleurette created a lavish display featuring bulk flowers from FiftyFlowers.com. To give it a fresh look, Dani and Maddy designed and overgrown look that incorporated moss, ferns, air plants, and whimsical flower stems. We fleshed out the rest of the concept by continuing the overgrown look to a dessert bar installation that would take guests’ breaths away!

To continue the specimen concept, we incorporated other details that brought the research element forward in well designed, thoughtful way. We included escort cards that were collected seed packets, decorated with library books from On Solid Ground Vintage Rentals in our color palette, and picked up a stunning customized suite from Minted that prominently featured a botanical drawing – what we considered to be a modern update to the traditional specimen print. We even sourced a dress from A and Be Bridal Shop by Truvelle that had layers that reminded us of ruffled petals on a flower.

From Kate Becker Photography… Justin & Kandice met in Ramstein, Germany while Justin was stationed there as a TACP Staff Sergeant in the Air Force. Originally from Utah, Kandice was working as an American Civilian on the Air Force base while enjoying and exploring Europe. They went on their first date to dinner at the castle the night before he deployed to Afghanistan & fell for each other hard. When Justin returned back to Germany after his deployment, they were inseparable & got engaged 6 months later. The couple chose to get married in Justin’s home state of Minnesota was because Justin promised to get Kandice a gorgeous barn venue that she had always dreamt of. Dellwood barns was perfect for their laid-back wedding because they were able to use the indoor and outdoor space, enjoy the fresh air, and hang out around the bonfire when the night grew dark. They got married the same date (September 5th) as our 1st date… the night he stole my heart & deployed early the next morning.” The difference on THIS September 5th, was that Justin was there to stay in the morning, with a new title as husband.

Romantic Minneapolis Summer Wedding

Hey there Munster Rose, it’s Liz over here, totally crushing on your beautiful bouquets at this summer celebration. I could stare all day and with the combined forces of Rock Paper Scissors and Denae Brennan Weddings & Events, we’re in wedding wonderland. Jeff Loves Jessica snapped it all for us to gush over and if a picture is worth a thousand words, we have millions of goodies to enjoy right here.

From Denae Brennan Weddings & EventsMolly and Marc reside in New York City but chose to get married in Molly’s hometown of Minneapolis. The clean lines and elegance of the Calhoun Beach Club provided the perfect backdrop for their modern and fresh wedding day. The happy couple was all smiles from start to finish and their energy was absolutely contagious. Jackie from Munster Rose provided gorgeous pops of color against the simple black and white palette of the wedding party.

Following the traditional Jewish ceremony, guests mingled while enjoying passed hors d’oeuvres like mini sliders and mini chicken tacos. When the ballroom opened, the Bruce Henry Band welcomed guests with a fast-paced set before dinner was served, setting the tone for the top priority of the reception: dancing! The band kept the dance floor packed all night, and when it was done a DJ finished out the night. The party truly went all night long with the happy newlyweds at the center of it all!

From the Bride… We were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend and have been together ever since. (Thanks again, Missy!) While we live in New York City, we knew right away that we wanted to get married in my hometown, Minneapolis.

We had a lot of guests from out of town, so we really wanted to make sure that they had an opportunity to explore Minnesota. We encouraged everyone to check out the lakes, bike trails, and State Fair, which was the same weekend as our wedding. It was incredibly special to have so many of our favorite people in Minneapolis, and we were pretty much bursting with happiness the entire weekend.

Planning the wedding long-distance meant that we were pretty reliant on my parents, who live in Minneapolis, and our vendors. Luckily, everyone was amazing! We had our rehearsal dinner at the Icehouse, which was a super fun (and delicious!) way to kick things off. We wanted the wedding itself to be elegant, simple, and really fun – and Calhoun Beach Club was perfect. Our florist, Jackie from Munster Rose, created beautiful arrangements and gave each of our flower girls a huge white dahlia to carry, which I loved! Our band, The Bruce Henry Band, made sure our guests danced their socks off and our wedding coordinator, Denae Brennan, made sure everything went off without a hitch.

All in all, it was the greatest of great weekends, and we feel so lucky to have had so many wonderful friends and family there to celebrate with us.

Glamorous Gatsby Inspired Wedding at 317 on Rice Park

Having met in college choir years ago, these lovebirds hit every stylish note when planning their chic celebration. With the beauty of Sadie’s Couture Floral & Design’s work, their classic Gatsby-esque soiree didn’t miss a beat and these linens alone have me swooning. Melissa Oholendt and B&M Video Production captured it all, gathered up in this glam gallery for us all to ooh and aah over.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/112207327 600 338]

From Melissa Oholendt Photography… When Beckie and Jacy met in choir their sophomore year at Luther College, in Iowa, they knew they were vocally compatible but would she be the soprano to his bass? Turned out love was not in the cards for them, but they still enjoyed each other’s company and decided to remain friends. Fate rekindled the old spark their senior year, when they decided to give it another shot. Three years later, Jacy proposed to his best friend. Beckie dreamed of a Gatsby-inspired reception, and 317 on Rice in St. Paul proved to be the perfect venue with its vintage charm and wood paneling. From her brooch-laden bouquet and cake to the gorgeous linens and feathered centerpieces, visions of sparkle and glam abound. Special touches signifying their love of family and friends were sprinkled throughout. With the unexpected passing of the co-best man just months before the wedding, a moment of silence was held in his honor, reminding everyone how fortunate they all are to have one another! As wine enthusiasts, Jacy and Beckie opted for a wine ceremony over the traditional unity candle. Parents each contributed a bottle of wine and a note to a sealed box for the couple to enjoy on future anniversaries. But first, the honeymoon in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic!

Southern Charm Meets Northern Elegance Wedding Inspiration

Since SMP was born in Boston, we’re always partial to a New England wedding, but I always find myself a sucker for some good old fashioned Southern charm. Laura Ivanova Photography captured all the North-meets-South pretty in this wedding inspiration shoot, from Sadie’s Couture Floral‘s stunningly soft floral arrangements, to the gorgeous tabletop decor from Weddingstar Inc., and we’ve got it all in the gallery here!

From This Love WeddingsFor this styled celebration we wanted to incorporate Southern charming traditions while having a fun Northern flair. We knew the Calhoun Beach Club would be the perfect setting-– it’s such a clean, sleek, and swanky beach club. We were lucky enough to work with the extremely talented Laura Ivanova who captured every bit of this simple, classic affair.

The Bride wore the gorgeous Monique Lhuillier gown, Candy from L’Atelier Couture paired with a cathedral veil and Badgley Mischka peep toe pumps. Shades of gold, blue and white were the perfect recipe for the warm and inviting soiree that included mini pecan tarts at each place setting and a sweet tea bar. Gretchen Berry Design Co. created a custom designed invitation suite with a delicate touch that we can’t help but swoon over. A monogram is also seen throughout all elements: from the paper goods to the two-tier cake. Piecing it all together, Sadie’s Floral fashioned some of the most beautiful bouquets, garlands, and lush centerpieces to create a posh look.

From the beautiful Bride… To say we knew what we wanted for our wedding day would be somewhat of an understatement. WE KNEW. Peter and I had a shared love of a little lake town in Northern Minnesota called Detroit Lakes. Both of us grew up in the same suburb of Minneapolis and both of us grew up with this special lake town in our hearts. Detroit Lakes is not only special place to us, it is special to both of our families. My Mom grew up in “DL” and my parents met one summer day while water-skiing on a nearby lake. Fast forward a few years later and my parents were married at a Church in Detroit Lakes surrounded by their friends and family. Growing up, some of my most vivid memories are spending time in Detroit Lakes with my Grandparents and enjoying all of the activities “lake life” has to offer. Okay. Here is where thinks get weird – weird in a good way. Coincidentally, Peter’s parents built a lake house when he was eight years old in a little lake town in Minnesota called; you guessed it, Detroit Lakes. For over twenty years their family has created special memories in this town and Peter has spent every summer at the lake. During our first couple weeks of dating, Peter invited me to his cabin for the weekend. Upon arriving at the cabin, Peter’s parents greeted me with open arms and Peter’s dad offered his famous line, “Welcome to the Lake!” We spent that entire summer at the Lake together. A place that was special to each of our families and each of us as individuals quickly became OUR special place.

My father-in-law’s famous words “Welcome to the Lake” became our overarching theme for the wedding and every decision we made during the design process was made with this in mind. Katie Murphy of Katie Murphy Stationary brought our theme to life on letter pressed wood veneer invitations that guests received with hand-illustrated elements that nodded to our favorite things at the Lake.

For my wedding dress, I worked with Amanda Kautt the owner of L’Atelier Couture and Madeline Bergason at L’Atelier. They were an absolute dream to work with! After describing what I envisioned for my dress, they showed me Vera Wang’s “Lillian” and I knew it was the one. A year later, I was finally able to slip the dress on for the real deal!

Our ceremony was held at Peter’s family cabin. We wanted our ceremony to be meaningful and set the tone for the evening. When guests arrived, a vintage cherry red truck billowing with greenery, flowers and a sign that read “ON LAKE TIME” greeted them. Jackie and team at Munster Rose transformed the lakeside lawn into a beautiful ceremony site with a dreamy floral arch, whimsical urns, and a colorful garland on a refreshment bar. The string quartet played songs from The Beatles, Guns N’ Roses, Verve Pipe, and I walked out to Coldplay’s “Paradise” alongside my Dad with the biggest smile on my face. I literally looked like Mr. Ed because I was so freaking happy!

Following the ceremony, guests were shuttled to Peter’s favorite golf course, Detroit County Club, down the street. The cocktail hour was hosted under a Sperry tent with a custom-built 24-foot barnwood bar with décor that nodded to lake life and acknowledged our beloved dog, Scout. Our guests sipped on signature cocktails and snacked on mini versions of our favorite comfort foods (mostly consisting of of carbs and cheese). Lounge vignettes were created on either end of the tent from furniture I had mostly found on OneKingsLane.com and Jossandmain.com.

Dinner and dancing was held in a separate tent that glowed at the end the tree-lined golf course. When planning the design for this tent, I told Jackie from Munster Rose that this was where I wanted the night to feel like a big celebration so I asked her to make things big and awesome and OH MA GAH did she ever! Her team did an unbelievable job creating floral chandeliers that hung across the entire length of the tent. We spent the night dancing underneath these beauties as a 10-piece band had us partying until the very last minute! No visit to the Lake would be complete without eating our favorite pizza from The Hotel Shoreham, so we had the bar deliver hot pizza to the guests for a late night treat on the dance floor.

We still have to pinch ourselves when we think about our wedding day. In our favorite place, surrounded by our favorite people, we celebrated what is our favorite day ever. It would have never been possible without the support of our special wedding party, our family and of course partnering with the most unbelievable vendors I could have ever asked for. Although I had designed and planned wedding and events prior to our own, we enlisted Nicolle Sellers from Mother of The Bride as our planner. Hallelujah and thank the Lord that we did! Nicolle was the MVP of our team supporting all of our crazy design ideas and coordinating the overwhelming amount of logistics for our wedding. Mike Berg and his team at Detroit Country Club had never hosted a tented wedding before on their golf course but you would have never known that. Their team executed everything flawlessly and our guests still talk about how friendly the entire staff was throughout the night. THAT is Minnesota Nice at its best right there! I could go on and on about every single vendor that contributed to our day. There were a LOT of them and they all brought their best creativity forward to make our day special. We’re forever grateful for their patience, friendship, and amazing talents! A very special thanks to our photographer, Laura Ivanova and videographer, Chris Martin of Sky Focus Films for making us appear much better looking than we actually are.

Letterpress 101

We’re talking about one of my absolute favorite topics today, SMPers. Letterpress is how I personally got my start in the wedding industry, so I can appreciate the love (and hard work!) that goes into the process, resulting in some of the prettiest wedding invitations you’ll ever set eyes on. So we teamed up with the lovely gals at Printerette Press and 2nd Truth to give you a behind the scenes peek at just how those gorgeous invites come to life.

CONCEPTUALIZATION

From Printerette PressAt Printerette Press, when we work with clients to create custom designs, we begin the relationship with a consultation – in person or digitally. This is often one of the most fun parts of the process! We love getting to know our clients and piecing together the details that will soon become the perfect pieces for their event. We ask loads of questions (and sometimes they’re a little weird!) to really get to know the people and the event.

Sometimes our clients like to tweak designs from our existing collection to fit their wedding. Other times, we start from scratch to create fully custom pieces just for them. Beginning the design process is where we like to get our hands a little dirty! A lot of our invitation suites incorporate unique details like custom portraiture, hand lettering, watercolor details, etc. so this is the place for us to pull out the sketchbook, paint brushes, and anything else we need to get the creative juices flowing.

We communicate back and forth with our clients using digital proofs. And when the design is approved and ready, we move to print. We offer a few different print methods for our clients, but our most popular is the one that we do in-house: Letterpress.

PLATE MAKING

After our design is approved by our client we are ready to go to print! (In the case of the example shown here, we first had the watercolor peonies digitally printed onto our paper before we begin the letterpress process.) The first step in the letterpress process is to make plates. Each color on a letterpress printed piece requires it’s own run through the press, and thus, it’s own plate. In the case of our wedding invitation example, we created a plate for the reply card and invitation (to be printed in gray), and another plate for the silver foil. So, the invitation will pass through the press twice (once for gray, once for silver foil), and the reply card will pass through just once (for the gray).

Plate making is something we just recently started doing, and let us say it’s been quite the learning experience. That being said, we’re very glad to be able to make them in-house. A well-made plate is one of the most essential pieces of a letterpress job. If you don’t have a good plate, you don’t have a good print. To make a plate, the design is printed in reverse on film and then adhered with suction to photopolymer plastic. Then, we expose it to light for several minutes. Once the design from the film has been exposed to the plastic, we wash away the unexposed plastic so that only our design remains. After drying and exposing the plastic to light one final time to harden the design, we are all set to print!

MIXING INK & CUTTING PAPER

A Pantone color palette (a designer’s color Bible), provides the “recipe” for mixing each color. To mix the gray shown here, we mixed 80% transparent white, 19% black, and 1% red. Getting an ink color precisely correct can be a challenging task – so having a specific formula of a color is really important. That’s where the Pantone formula guide, and our super accurate scale comes in very handy.

PRINTING

One of the more difficult tasks a letterpress printer faces is perfectly lining up the plate to the area of the paper you need to print on (This is called “registration”). Getting everything straight, centered, aligned can take a few tries before we get it perfect. The more colors we have on a job, the more complicated the registration is because it requires that we register multiple plates.

Once the plates are set, it’s go time! Certain things to concentrate on are the amount of pressure + packing you have behind the paper. This allows you to either gently tap the paper, or punch it harder to get a deep impression. We like to print with a really nice, deep impression. To look really letterpress-y, you know?

We have a couple of presses at Printerette Press. The bulk of our jobs are printed on the Heidelberg Windmill, pictured here. The windmill pulls each sheet into it’s clam-shell, prints it, and spits it out on the other side in a windmill motion. It’s very fast, very efficient, and sometimes a little scary. After all of the steps in printing are finished, we trim them up using our stack paper cutter and voila! a handcrafted wedding suite that beautifully sets the tone for our client’s wedding.

WHY IS LETTERPRESS MORE EXPENSIVE?

It is a largely hand done process on antique equipment that yields a texturally luxurious and one of a kind finished product.

IS IT MORE EXPENSIVE FOR MORE COLORS? DOES DIGITAL PRINTING SAVE ON COST?

Each color on a letterpress job requires it’s own run through the press, and it’s own plate. The more colors, the more materials and production time. Digital printing definitely will save on costs due to the less involved printing process. While you can achieve more colors with digital printing, the process is often called “flat” printing, because the final result includes no textural qualities and requires less hands on production. We specialize in letterpress but offer both methods to cater to all kinds of budgets.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN METALLIC FOIL AND LETTERPRESS?

The metallics that you often times see on invitations is an entirely different process called foil stamping. A main difference is when it comes to the color gold for example. If a bride wants pure gold, we typically suggest the route of foil stamping due to the fact that gold letterpress ink typically looks more bronze because it lacks the metallic effect that foil stamping has to offer. The combination of foil stamping and letterpress is unbelievably gorgeous and has quickly become a trending request in our shop.

HOW CUSTOMIZABLE IS THE PROCESS?

The process is incredibly customizable. We specialize in quirky designs that speak to each and every client that we work with. We have a collection of suites to provide brides with a stepping stone, but are always open to tweaking these existing designs, or creating something entirely new!

IS IT ECO-FRIENDLY?

The paper we use is 100% cotton. It is a bi-product of the textile industry and is made up of cotton linters that would otherwise be garbage. We also use soy based inks.

WHAT IS USUAL TURN AROUND TIME?

As soon as the design is approved to print it typically takes around 15 business days for production.

HOW DO I KEEP EVERYTHING IN MY BUDGET?

We pride ourselves in working hands on with our brides to ensure that we can figure out ways of keeping everything in their budget. By working with different print methods and materials, we are able to accommodate nearly any budget.

Elegant Summer Lakeside Wedding

I’m not supposed to choose favorites, but this summer soiree has stolen my heart. Not only did this duo seamlessly paired their Big Day with breathtaking beauty, but an amazing team of vendors to boot (think Molly’s Flower StudioPixelskew and Lasting Impressions Weddings). Filled with beautiful moments from start to finish, Leah Fontaine captured it all right here!

From Lasting Impressions Weddings… Terryn and Mike were married on a beautiful summer day just 6 months after we started to plan their wedding! Terryn had moved to Minneapolis from Arkansas for work.. and the rest is history when she met Mike!!

The ceremony took place at Lake of the Isles church.. a quaint little church right by the lake. The scenic drive to the chapel was perfect to show off the area for all of our out of town guests. Staying very traditional Mike and Terryn did not see each other before the ceremony and she looked radiant walking down the aisle!

They chose to have their reception at the Minneapolis Depot because of its beautiful architecture and it is adjoined with a hotel, very convenient for their guests flying in from the south! June in Minnesota means peony season!! And Terryn wanted to incorporate lots of flowers that were garden inspired and we want to bring in a color that would brighten up the reception space!! The night ended with late night snacks and uplighting that added a fun vibrant look to the room!!

Traditionally Elegant Nicollet Island Wedding

Intimate and overflowing with romance, this Park Place Planning fête beautifully captured by Erica Loeks Photography and Joe Pollock Films is what my wedding daydreams are made of. My adoration started with the Bride’s gorgeous L’Atelier Couture Bridal gown and then just seemed to grow with each and every Munster Rose bloom. Take a peek at the full gallery for every moment, right here!

From the beautiful Bride… Nick and I are both from the Midwest, so when it came time to pick a place to get married we knew we would be going back to our roots, despite living in Texas. I had visited Nicollet Island many times while in Minneapolis and had always had my eye on the pavilion for a potential wedding venue. It had all the elements we wanted to make our day special. The spacious room would accommodate our large guest list and the scenic view of the city and beautiful river was almost too good to be true. We wanted our wedding to be elegant with a vintage, romantic touch so we incorporated luscious flowers, candelabras and ceiling draping.

Since most of our guests were from out of town, it felt very much like a destination wedding. We started the weekend off with our family and wedding party attending a Twins game on Thursday. Then we filled everyone up with good food and cold drinks at our Rehearsal Dinner and Welcome Party on Friday evening and finished festivities with a traditional Sunday Brunch. It was so relaxing to be able to spend time with people over a long weekend. June in Minneapolis was a very rainy month, including the week leading up to our wedding day, but on that Saturday the weather was perfect, sunny and high 70s with no humidity! The day was so much fun!

We worked with outstanding vendors. Paperista helped us set the stage with an invitation design worth framing and we were so comfortable with our Videographer Joe Pollock and Photographer Erica Loeks. This is important since they’re in your shadows all day long! Our hair and make-up was done by Emily J and so many people commented on what a beautiful job they did. The gorgeous flowers were from Jackie at Munster Rose and they really completed the wedding we’d been dreaming up for over a year. My sister added the personal touches I wanted by creating potted flowers, signage outside the reception and handmade gold table numbers. Our band, The Seville’s, lived up to their reputation and had everyone on the dance floor twisting and shouting, myself included. I could go on and on because the day was truly one filled with details that made memories I’ll never forget.

Pastel Woodland Inspired Nursery

Nurseries are a world of special – that place where you spend late nights rocking your baby to sleep, mornings reading countless books and watching them play quietly (or extra-loud if they’re anything like my two). And whether modern or classic, bright and colorful or dreamy and cozy like this space, they’re the very first spot your bundle will call home. Have a look at the full tour  of this woodland inspired sanctuary captured by Meg Cooper Photography right here.

Little Hazel was born on November 11 the heart of MN deer season as her dad would say and she completely stole our hearts. Her big Sister Addie Mae couldn’t have been excited especially the day of the photos. The vision for the nursery would be Shabby Chic with a touch of woodland. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do initially other than create a cozy, peaceful room for our little Hazel. The soft floral sheets were the starting point and once I found those everything fell into place. Hazel’s dad likes to deer hunt so while it is certainly a ” girly” room I love that he is represented in there as well through the animals but primarily the deer.

Midwest Snowy Bridal Session

After countless dumps of snow in Boston this season, I was planted firmly in the “completely over winter” camp. That was, until, this photo session from Jake AndersonFlora & Ephemera and Emily Grace Designs hit my computer screen. With gorgeous styling and cool tones evoking wintertime beauty, it actually made long for a few more days of snowy bliss before spring. Browse the pretty here!

From Jake AndersonWhen I was a child, growing up in the Midwest, I remember walking the fields near our home during sunset, and being completely mesmerized by the tones, the colors, the emotions of the last warm light of day reflecting off the cold environment of a land covered in snow. Inspired by this, we desired to pull in a pastel palate, accented with complimenting warm, rich tones in order to display an event befitting the winter season.

An underlying narrative to this shoot is the simplicity in which the bride is surrounded. It is her, and her surroundings, paired with the essentials of a wedding: a stunning gown, a bold and unruly bouquet, and a table detailed with natural elements foraged from the surrounding environment. Elements which evoke an image of a bride whom is deeply connected to nature, and require participants to partake in her desire to adhere to simple, natural aesthetics.

Romantic Fall Wedding at Lyndale Park Peace Garden

I’m all for breaking rules and creating new rituals, but after watching this clip from Skyfocus Films, I have a whole new appreciation – and craving for – the beauty of tradition. Watching this couple partake in their family’s customs made me sentimental for those moments. Add in the gorgeous florals and styling by Munster Rose and photos by Laura Ivanova and this wedding isn’t to be skipped over.
