Classic Spring Wedding at Vanlandingham Estate

Soft. Pretty. Delicate. It’s a design inspiration we’ve heard time and time again from brides all over, yet it never seems to get old. And, judging by these beautifully arranged florals, it’s a look Lily Greenthumbs is definitely no stranger to. With The Vanlandingham Estate as the perfect backdrop, this fairy tale wedding is a fresh take on a timeless combination for pretty. Get a glimpse of the gorgeousness (thanks to Jim Trice Photography!) in the gallery here.

From the Bride… My wedding day inspiration didn’t come to me all at once. It developed and transformed into what it was little by little along the way. I knew I wanted to have the overall feeling be very soft and fairy tale-like with delicate textures and colors. It was important to me that nature be a big part of the design– it’s natural beauty doesn’t cost anything! Having the reception outdoors under an open-air, twinkle-lit frame was my first decision. I knew I had to find the right venue to make this happen, but also somewhere to accomodate the dance party that would ensue shortly after dinner.

The VanLandingham Estate was the perfect backdrop. There is something so special about being in an old home that dates back to the 1800’s. The elegant details and nostalgia added a vintage element to my wedding inspiration and the gardens spoke for themselves. I knew the venue would then help with pulling together the other pieces. I focused my attention next on the bridesmaids’ dresses. I knew I wanted to have each girl in their own, unique dress. It was important to me that they be comfortable and feel beautiful. I cringe at spending money on something I will never wear again (aside from my wedding gown!) so I hated the thought of each of them buying a dress and shoes that they would donate or toss shortly after. I told them the color scheme and sent a few examples from the Internet and then left the rest up to them! I wanted them to have different textures and colors so that each one would stand out. And they did– each girl looked so gorgeous.

One of the main resources that I used for inspiration and for purchasing decor items came from Anthropologie’s bridal site, BLHDN. I fell in love with all the sweet, vintage-y decor and accessories. As many of their items can seem outlandishly pricey, I just kept checking their sale page on a weekly basis to see if my favorite things were listed. And many times they were! The first thing I bought from them were my shoes. I was able to get them on sale and they were perfect! From then on I gathered up other items here and there: a birdcage for the cards, a mix of pennants (lace, floral and gold) to use throughout the reception, mini antique cake stands for my bridesmaids, the table number cards, and a chalkboard sign to name a few.

The dress. I’ll never forget how it happened. As I was walking back to the room to try on one of the other five or six I had selected, there it was, hanging all by itself on a random peg- as if someone just hung it there until they had time to figure out where it really belonged. I pointed at it and said, “I think I want to try this one.” I came out, steped on the block, turned around a few times and started to cry. I knew this was the one. I didn’t think that feeling really existed, but for me it did– and it felt really good!

The flowers literally took my breath away. This is the one area of the planning that you really don’t get to see until the day of your wedding, and to me, one of the best parts! I knew I wanted a mix of blush and ivory flowers with soft greenery accents. From the start, Karen Grennoe, owner of Lily Greenthumbs, was able to see my vision come to life– soft, vintage, candle-lit mercury glass, and low profile flowing centerpieces. When I walked into the reception I felt like I was in my own fairy tale.

As my vision was starting to become much more clear, I couldn’t have pulled it all together without the help of my wedding planner, Ginger Hussey, owner of HeyLove Events. Not only did she seemlessly coordinate and execute all the events of the day, I was able to rent several items of hers to complete my look. I rented her beautiful farm tables, vintage china, market street lighting and chandelier, and the old door for the polaroid guest book. The menus, name cards, and invitations were designed by her talented daughter, Lauren Calnin. I was so impressed how perfectly the menus matched my flowers, without having seen them together first. The lace table runners were made by Marilyn, my step mother, and the cork table number holders were made by my mother-in-law, Linda.

Our wedding day wouldn’t be complete without a solid rave party… and so we made sure to throw one! Corey and I love Electronic Dance Music and so we sought out our amazing DJ, Brandon Willett, who tailored the dancing to match our favorite tracks and mash ups. All our guests raved with us adorned in neon glow, head to toe. We wouldn’t have had it any other way.

The Vault Files’ Home Tour

This right here is proof that big style doesn’t necessarily equate big space. Gaby’s Toronto abode may be small, but what it lacks in square footage it makes up tenfold in beautiful details. With photos from our beloved Heidi Lau, we couldn’t squeeze all the lovely in one post, so you definitely want to peruse through the rest. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to give my bedroom a coat of black paint!

From Gaby… What I love the most about the living room is that it’s inviting and comfy. I like people to feel comfortable and at ease, and I think that I achieved that with the living room. Whether I’m just hanging out with friends, playing with my son, reading or working, I love how relaxed I feel in this space and I love the view of the city, both during the day and night.

For a long time I didn’t have any coffee table in this space and I was surprised at how big of a difference it makes. It really grounds the space and not only it’s great for entertaining but for working too!

I was seriously obsessed (still am!) with the Thibaut tanzania wallpaper but it was just way off the budget, so I thought, why not try to recreate it myself? Worst case scenario I’d just paint over it, plus, since it’s an irregular pattern, you really can’t make a mistake, right? I’m so glad it turned out! I actually think it turned out better than what I thought, so every time I come home I feel super happy and proud when I see it. Proves that there’s always a way to get what you want with a little creativity and effort ;)

The bench is the perfect size for this small entryway, and it’s there for practical purposes as we take our shoes off when we come home.

I love to entertain and have people over, so even though this table may seem big for the space, I wouldn’t get rid of it for anything in the world! It’s great for entertaining large groups, for working, tackling handy projects… I constantly get reminded how great it is to have a big dinning table! The rug is probably my favourite rug in the apartment, and the chairs are a great find from Ikea, yeap, most people find that surprising too!

I joined the ladies on the One Room Challenge to “transform” this little powder room into something prettier and I’m glad I took the challenge because this bathroom really needed some love. I love the drama of a black wall and the unexpected gallery wall takes it up a notch ;) It’s incredible what a little bit of paint and some decor touches can do.

I’m all about black and white and a tiny bit of colour here and there so I guess it’s safe to say that the colours in my bedroom are a true representation of my style. I have changed the pillows so many times, but it’s been a year with this combo and I’m still in love with it like I was on the first day I got them so I guess I’ve found myself!

After seeing so many great spaces with black walls all over Pinterest and online publications, and after seeing the results of painting the powder room black, I decided to go for it for my bedroom and I’ve never regretted the decision. Though I have to confess, I was afraid at first given how small the space is, but fortunately I get lots of natural light and it seems to work. Now if I could just find a cream juju hat to hang over the bed, I’d be set! :)

When you’re on a budget, a little creativity goes a long way, so I covered the top of this super simple ikea bedside table with marble contact paper and changed the knob for a more modern look. I couldn’t love the results any more!

Classic + Elegant Marbella Wedding

Kudos to this stunning Chicagoan duo. With the help of Rachel Rose Weddings, they planned their Marbella destination wedding from afar and the result is blend of American and Spanish tradition right down to every last detail. Lace complemented by papel picado stationery from Bella Figura and chandeliers floating above blush floral topped tables… it’s a fresh take on the classic and we’re in love with every bit from Anna Gazda.

From Rachel Rose WeddingsRachel and Mike were one of our brave couples who plan their long distance destination wedding without ever visiting the venue first. Luckily to date we have never had a disappointed couple and Rachel and Mike were no exception. With them both living in Chicago but with destination weddings in the family, their siblings have all married in wonderful destinations such as Hawaii and Italy, the competition was on to out do the rest! Rachel and Mike had both visited Andalucia in previous years and had fallen in love with the area and once they found Cortijo Pedro Jimenez the deal was done. Being our first all American wedding with guests travelling such a long distance the pressure was on to make a truly memorable affair and week long celebration. Rachel wanted a classic and elegant affair but with some subtle Spanish influences so we settled on papel picado details on the stationery and delightful hand painted Spanish pottery vases for the centerpieces coupled with beautiful florals and classic vintage touches. These wonderful images from Anna Gazda at Limelight brought a big smile to our face and a tear to our eye when they landed on our desk as she really did capture what a wonderful days it was and just how deeply in love with each they are.

Behind the Blog: The Vault Files

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting the sweet Gaby of the fashion and lifestyle blog, The Vault Files, on multiple occasions. Which means that I can personally attest to the fact that she’s kind of the best. She’s always exquisitely dressed, at the ready to offer some great blogging advice, and I feel lucky to call her a friend! With photos from Heidi Lau, we’ve gone behind the blog (and it’s oh so good!)

SMP: Tell us a little about The Vault Files!
I like to believe that The Vault Files is a peek into my life and how I live it. I have a passion for fashion, healthy leaving, fitness, decor, and all things creative, so I try to share these passions with my readers to hopefully motivate them! Whereas it’s a recipe that I love, a great online find, personal styling tips, or just my thoughts on how to live a meaningful life, I like creating a positive space that I hope is inspiring for others.

SMP: What made you decide to start a blog?
I know this is totally cliché and boring, but the answer is no other than the opportunity of having a creative outlet. I was in a position where I wasn’t going to be able to work for 18 months or so, and I had just graduated from Fashion Marketing so I thought that blogging was a great alternative to put to practice what I had just learnt, to somehow fulfill my passion for fashion, and to do something meaningful for me.

SMP: What’s one thing you’ve learnt along the way?
Since I started the blog I’ve learnt so many things! It’s been a learning experience at so many levels and that’s exactly one of the things I love most about it.

SMP: If you could go back in time, what would you do differently?
I don’t think I’d do anything differently as I feel like I’ve grown both as a person and as blogger in this process and I wouldn’t be the blogger I am today if it wasn’t for the experience, the ups and downs, and the mistakes. Having said that, I wish I would have started my blog on WordPress!

SMP: One piece of advice you’d give to a blogger just starting out?
On a personal note I’d say to find your own voice, and once you find it, keep it and to stay true to who you are and your values. I think it’s super important to avoid comparing yourself to what others are doing, and always be consistent, hard working, and network as much as possible. If you enjoy blogging and you believe in yourself, keep doing it even at times when you think no one is reading. The hard work will eventually pay off and you’ll grow as a person and as a blogger while doing so, so never give up!

On the technical side, I think that no matter what category your blog falls in, starting on WordPress, investing in a good camera, and learning photoshop are great pillars!

SMP: Your most embarrassing blog moment?
I honestly can’t recall one. I’m sure I’ve made a ton of mistakes, but that’s how you learn right? Now, don’t make me look back at my archives, I really don’t want to look at those early days layouts ;)

SMP: What was the tipping point in your business that made you feel your blog was going to thrive?
I hope there’s more in the future for The Vault Files, but being able to land a couple of projects because of the blog has been amazing and everything you dream for. The fact that I’m here today, sharing my home and some words is pretty big for me :)

SMP: What color do you think will stand the test of time?
I’m a neutrals girl at heart, so this question is an easy one: Black and/or White. For both decor and fashion, you can never go wrong with the classics.

SMP: One thing you simply can’t live with out?
Taking photos is one of my favourite things to do and it gives me tremendous pleasure and joy, so I’m going to say my camera. And because I would be lost without my computer, my MacBook Pro is just as important :)

SMP: Three things every woman should have in her closet?
One great black bag, a perfect fitting black blazer that can dress up your jeans-and-tee outfit, and a black dress you can always count on!

SMP: Your favourite online design resource?
Lately I’ve been enjoying Domaine a lot. I also like Rue Mag and of course Design Sponge and Apartment Therapy.

DIY Floral Beach Cruiser

Beach cruisers make me happy but beach cruisers decorated with the prettiest florals? Those have me doing high kicks. We first fell in love with this floral infused bicycle here and have since been dreaming of crafting a get away bike of our very own. The Little ThingsSweet Annie Floral Design and Ruth Eileen Photography came to the rescue with this simple DIY that will leave you doing high kicks and maybe a few jazz hands too.

From The Little ThingsA custom, floral laden beach cruiser just might be the ultimate “getaway vehicle” for any beach celebration, and they’re easier to put together than you may think! Be prepared for envious stares as you’re riding off into the sunset on your own personalized floral beauty!

Materials

Beach cruiser
Basket
Blank hanging sign
Squeeze paint
Flowers with thick, sturdy bases, such as roses, dahlias, carnations, zinnias
Floral clippers
Floral wire, clipped into 6” pieces
Zip ties

instructions

step-1  Start with an awesome beach cruiser- preferably one that you grabbed off of Craigslist and fixed up to suit your color palette (like we did)!

step-2 Use your squeeze paint to write something simple and sweet on your hanging sign, such as “hitched,” “Mr. and Mrs.,” or “forever.” Be sure to practice writing with the squeeze paint first!

step-3 While your sign is drying, place your basket on the bike and secure it with zip ties. Fill your bike basket with florals until it’s bursting at the seams, and use another zip tie (or floral wire) to hang your sign.

step-4 Take your flowers out of water and clip them so only the base of the flower remains. Thread the floral wire through the base of each flower.

step-5 Take your wired flowers and place them up against the wheel spokes, starting from the inside of the wheel and working outward. Wrap the wire together and around the spokes as needed so the flowers are affixed and will stay in place throughout the day.

step-6 Once complete, clip off any extra floral wire peeking through, and you’re finished and ready to ride off in the best beach cruiser ever!

Classic Blush Chicago Tent Wedding

This wedding? It’s the definition of timeless. Think classic Pronovias ballgown, tented reception and more white-on-white moments than you can count. The fab Kristin La Voie was there to capture the day, and she has all the classic gorgeousness sitting right here.

From Kristin La Voie PhotographyThere are no two sweeter, cuter, happier people than Luke & Lauren. Not only do their names together roll off your tongue, but they are pure magic in front of the camera. The minute I stepped into Lauren’s bridal suite and got one look of the most stunning updo of all time, I KNEW the whole day would be perfection. Even though it was a humid & hot day, we found the perfect shady patches for a magical first look. These two just couldn’t keep their hands off of each other! The ceremony was breathtaking with their gorgeous chuppah and the tented reception was just my cup of tea (even during a monsoon!). The day was simply stunning.

Intimate Ranch Wedding in Texas

I love seeing how couples incorporate personal details to make their day that much more special to them. A beautiful showing of sentimental value is this next cute, country wedding set at The Spur, the family ranch, and decorated by Wolfe Florist (aka the mother of the groom). The heartwarming celebration had priceless details that made the day truly unforgettable, and you can see all the treasured memories, from Jared Tseng Photography, here.

From The Bride…Since we lived far away from our family and friends, and because of Jeremy’s service in the Army, we really wanted to incorporate a lot of personal touches to our wedding weekend. We wanted it to be a relaxing time for everyone who traveled to Waco since we had guests coming from Ireland, England and all over the US. We saw this as an opportunity for our families and closest friends to meet and blend.

We decided to have our ceremony and reception at Jeremy’s parents Ranch, The Spur, because it has always been a relaxing getaway for us and a beautiful sight to see. We used antique silver and china from both sides of the family to include some of the loved ones who couldn’t be with us on our wedding day. Our theme was sort of a like a country garden party. We didn’t want to overdue the ranch theme or be too “matchy-matchy”. I used my grandmother’s rosary on my bouquet, and wore my mother’s pearls. Jeremy’s Father became an ordained minister before the wedding, so he married us under the pecan wood arch he built and surprised both sides of the family. It was really special. Jeremy’s mom was our florist with the help of family and bridesmaids the night before. We put together lavender sachets for guests to throw as we came up the aisle as Mr. and Mrs.. Jeremy’s grandfather created our new initials out of wood, which hung behind us at dinner. We did a lot of antiquing in Texas and DIY-d chalkboard signs, table numbers, hay seating and lighting décor. One of my bridesmaids painted a tree for guests to sign and stamp. For the unity part of the ceremony, we watered a potted tree to symbolize our growing love that we will continue to nurture.

We are such foodies, so we really wanted to make sure all of the food served on the wedding day and at the rehearsal dinner was local and consciously raised. I arrived to the ceremony, and we left in Jeremy’s grandfathers 1940’s Ford that he restored himself. Jeremy’s father came up with the brilliant idea to serve beer in the bucket of the tractor, which was pulled up next to the original 1900’s barn, turned bar for the reception. We built a couch lounge out of hay for guests to sit on and sip margaritas while enjoying the lawn games put out for cocktail hour. Guests enjoyed s’mores after cake and tons of dancing before the night was over. Both our mother’s were so wonderful to pick up on all the small details leading up to the big day. Our wedding couldn’t have been the most perfect day of our lives without our family and friends to be there and for all of their help. We have never felt so loved.

Romantic Provence Inspiration Shoot

My hubby and I have a long list of places we want to travel to, and Provence has always been close to the tippy top. Well, after devouring this ridiculously perfect shoot from Studio A+Q, Provence is officially moving to the number one spot. It’s a shoot overflowing with the prettiness of Provence and inspiration that will make your head spin – and you can get lost in all the lovely here

From Studio A+QThere is a reason people come to Provence to celebrate love. Something magical and enchanted happens when two lovers promise themselves to each other under the dreamy light of a soft spring afternoon in Provence.

They will whisper je t’aime mon chéri as they sit gazing out over the sun-drenched landscape that has inspired painters and pioneers for, not years… but centuries. They will relish the sweet, honey-like smell of surrounding almond flowers, as its cradles them into a state of pure bliss. They will sip a divine glass of rosé chilled to perfection and made with the grapes of the vines that are just a few steps away. They will stop their clocks and drift into timelessness, that place where the soul must go to restore itself.

Provence is a haven of natural beauty, and lavender and olive trees are not its only asset. The almond trees of Provence are among the first to blossom in March, and their beautiful delicate white flowers blossom for a period of two to three weeks, just before the cherry trees begin to showcase their soft pink flowers.

Kelina & Romain fell in love all over again on this dreamy afternoon among the almond blossoms of Provence. A group of immensely talented local vendors came together to imagine how this day would look, and with the help of almond producer Monsieur Jaubert (“Jo-bear”) and L’Occitane, what was at first simply an incredibly beautiful vision of love and romance in Provence, turned into reality.

Seaside Alabama Wedding at the Estuarium At The Dauphin Island Sea Lab

These stunning images from Jordan Brittley paint the prettiest picture of this couples’ absolutely priceless day. It’s the kind of wedding you’ll find yourself starring at for more time you care to admit, and that’s because it’s pure lovely from start to finish. You’ll want to wrap yourself up in every fabulous moment of this seaside soiree, and you can do just that here.

From Jordan BrittleyI wanted to send this Dauphin Island wedding your way since it is dripping with seaside beauty and a darling couple.

From The Bride…We had a wonderful time getting ready together! Brittany and Jessie helped me straighten my hair. And then after I had it pinned up Britt put in all of the flower pin hair accessories. Brittany then applied all of my makeup, so got to make lots of funny faces at her in the process. And Jessie was on hand with q-tips to fix all the smudges my mascara kept leaving on my face (gotta love long eyelashes!).

Its funny looking back because it’s all such a blur. I remember getting ready with my sisters the most and then waiting at the church. Everything else happened so fast I don’t think I can separate the memories out! The only other favorite/funny memory I have is when we were taking pictures and everyone had to help me move so my dress didn’t get dirty. At one point, I remember squatting down to grab the front of my dress while making a lovely face as I was trying to move when I looked up and caught my cousin taking a picture!

Advice to Future Brides: There is no such thing as too many lists!

The pictures are BY FAR my favorite keepsake from my wedding. I can look back on every moment and relive it, which was especially important to me as all of my family was not able to make the trip down for my wedding. Now I can share these memories with friends and family now and in the future.

For something that will be worn and seen every single day, an engagement ring should be loved, cherished, and coveted! As a custom jeweler at Josh Levkoff Jewelry for many years, I’ve seen it all. From clients who know exactly what they want, to those who have no clue, creating custom jewelry is an experience from beginning to end. By going the custom route, you and your jeweler can create a one-of-a-kind engagement ring together that you can be sure no one else in the world has. So what exactly is the process and best way to approach customizing an engagement ring? Here are five important tips to getting the sparkler you’re in the market for.

1. Get inspired. From pages of a magazine to pins on Pinterest, inspiration can be found anywhere! Talk to people, take pictures of friends’ rings, go window shopping—anything for interesting ideas. Knowing your (or your significant other’s) style is important as well. Are you a risk taker, or more conservative? Do you like to dress up, or be casual? These factors can be brought into the ring creation. At a loss? The design team at Josh Levkoff Jewelry can provide you with plenty of ideas to get the wheels turning.

2. Find a jeweler you trust. Working with someone you can trust is a very important factor in this process. Ask around—usually word of mouth will find you a reliable jeweler. From there, be sure to use their knowledge, resources, and experience. Let him or her bring their talent and creativity to your project! After all, they’re in this business for a reason.

3. Set a budget. Custom rings are not just for the rich and famous, but because of their endless possibilities (and the fact that there are typically diamonds involved), they can get pricey quickly. So set your budget, be upfront about it with your jeweler, and stick to it. There are many ways a jeweler can help you can stretch your budget and maximize resources to obtain a beautiful piece. And remember: bigger is not always better.

4. Pick your stone. This is when it starts to get fun! At Josh Levkoff Jewelry, clients not only get a beautiful end result—they are educated along the way. When custom designing a ring, you first pick out the center diamond and then you build the rest around it. The design team goes through all of the shapes and sizes of diamonds and/or various other gemstones until you find the perfect stone. With diamonds, craftsmanship and quality can vary drastically, so it’s important you find a jeweler who can give you the best quality piece for the best price.

5. Be open-minded and have fun! With today’s technology, anything you dream up can be created. And if you’re worried about taking a risk on a unique ring, don’t be! Thanks to CAD, or computer-aided design, you can see what your piece will look like before you throw down your credit card. CAD will help your jeweler take the design concept and its specifications (such as finger size, metal type, stone shape and size, stone placement, shank width, setting style, and more) and build a 3D design for your approval. So don’t be afraid to be a little adventurous! This is a unique opportunity to showcase your freedom of expression.

When customers see the final piece completed, they are mesmerized by it. And after being involved throughout the entire process, they feel a stronger appreciation for their unique piece. A custom design piece of jewelry always turns into an heirloom, a true treasure.

Mini Donut Holes + Homemade Bread from Martha Stewart + Macy’s

We are constantly inspired by Martha Stewart, whether she’s whipping up something tasty, or creating the latest and greatest for her front door. When we found out she was teaming up with Macy’s on a series of how-to videos, we couldn’t contain our excitement. We’ve asked Martha to share a few of her recipes, and she gracefully obliged.  First up in this series: mini donut holes and homemade bread, all made in a Martha Stewart Collection enameled cast iron pots, available only at Macy’s.

Yep, our mouths are watering too! So we obviously couldn’t leave out the recipes. That would just be wrong!

MARTHA STEWART’S MINI DONUT HOLES with LEMON CURD FILLING

[dotted]

INGREDIENTS  for the donuts
1 package (2 1/2 teaspoons) active dry yeast
2/3 cup whole milk, room temperature
3 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour, plus more for baking sheet
1 1/3 cups sugar, divided
1 teaspoon coarse salt
3 large eggs
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature, cut into 6 to 8 pieces
Canola oil, for frying
Lemon Curd, chilled

for the lemon curd
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon finely grated lemon zest, plus 2/3 cup fresh lemon juice
8 large egg yolks (egg whites reserved for another use)
1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
1 1/4 sticks unsalted butter (10 tablespoons), cut into 1/2-inch pieces

DIRECTIONS for the donuts
STEP 1 | In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the dough hook attachment, stir together yeast and milk; let stand until yeast is dissolved, about 5 minutes. Add eggs. Sift together flour, 1/3 cup sugar, and salt, then add to yeast mixture; mix on low speed until dough comes together, about 1 minute. Continue mixing on low 3 minutes more. Add butter, a tablespoon at a time, mixing after each addition and until butter is fully incorporated and dough is soft, 5 to 6 minutes. Increase speed to medium, continue mixing until dough is smooth and elastic, about 3 minutes more.

STEP 2 | Remove dough from bowl and wrap tightly with plastic wrap. Refrigerate at least 8 hours or overnight.

STEP 3 | Lightly flour a baking sheet; set aside. On a well-floured work surface, roll out dough to about 1/2 inch thick. Using a 1¼-inch round biscuit cutter, cut out doughnuts. Transfer to prepared baking sheet and cover with plastic wrap; let stand in a warm spot until they’ve doubled in height and feel puffy and pillowy, about 45 minutes.

STEP 4 | Fill a large, heavy-bottomed enameled cast iron braiser with oil to a depth of 3 inches; heat over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F on a deep-fry thermometer. Working in batches, place doughnuts in the hot oil, taking care not to crowd them. Fry until golden brown on one side, 1 to 2 minutes; turn with a chopstick and continue frying on remaining side until golden, 1 to 2 minutes more. Using a slotted spoon, transfer doughnuts to a wire rack set over a baking sheet until cool enough to handle.

STEP 5 | Place remaining cup of sugar in a small bowl. Toss doughnuts in sugar, one at a time, to coat evenly. Return doughnuts to paper towel-lined baking sheet to cool completely.

STEP 6 | Transfer lemon curd to a pastry bag fitted with a small round tip; set aside.

STEP 7 | Poke a hole in the side of each cooled doughnut and fill with lemon curd; serve immediately.

for the lemon curd
STEP 1 | In a medium saucepan, off heat, whisk together sugar, zest, and egg yolks; whisk in lemon juice and salt.

STEP 2 | Add butter and place pan over medium-high. Cook, whisking constantly, until butter has melted, mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon and small bubbles form around the edge of pan, about 5 minutes (do not boil).

STEP 3 | Remove pan from heat while continuing to whisk. Pour curd through a fine-mesh sieve into a glass bowl. Press plastic wrap against the surface of curd and refrigerate until cool. Cook’s Note:  To store lemon curd, refrigerate in an airtight container, up to 2 weeks.

MARTHA STEWART’S HOMEMADE BREAD

[dotted]

INGREDIENTS
3 cups bread flour, plus more for work surface
1 teaspoon fine sea salt
3/4 teaspoon instant or active-dry yeast
1 3/4 cups 1/2-inch cubes aged Gruyere cheese
1 1/2 cups pitted 1/4-inch-thick slices green Spanish olives
1 1/2 cups cool water (55 to 65 degrees), plus more as needed

DIRECTIONS
STEP 1 | In a medium bowl, stir together flour, salt, and yeast; stir in cheese and olives. Add water and, using a wooden spoon or your hand, mix until a wet, sticky dough forms, about 30 seconds, adding additional water, 1 tablespoon at a time, if needed. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and let stand at room temperature until dough has doubled in size and surface becomes dotted with bubbles, 12 to 18 hours.

STEP 2 | Generously flour work surface; scrape dough onto work surface. Lightly flour hands, a bowl scraper, or a spatula and lift edges of dough toward the center. Nudge and tuck edges of dough to make round.

STEP 3 | Place a piece of parchment paper on work surface and generously dust with flour. Gently place dough on parchment, seam-side down. If dough is tacky, lightly dust top with flour. Cover dough loosely with wax paper and two clean kitchen towels. Let down stand in a warm, draft-free spot until almost doubled in size, 1 to 2 hours.

STEP 4 | Gently poke dough with your finger; dough should hold the impression. If it springs back, let rise 15 minutes more.

STEP 5 | Ten minutes before dough has finished rising, preheat oven to 475 degrees on a conventional oven (450 degrees on a convection oven) with a rack in the lower third. Place a covered 3 1/2-quart cast-iron or enameled cast iron pot (with plastic handle removed and screw hole plugged with aluminum foil) in center of rack.

STEP 6 | Using pot holders, carefully remove preheated enameled cast iron pot from oven and uncover. Uncover bread and loosen bottom with a large spatula. With the aid of the parchment paper, invert bread into preheated enameled cast iron pot so that it is seam-side up. Cover enameled cast iron pot and transfer to oven; bake for 25 minutes.

Whimsical Greenhouse Wedding

Once upon a time, there lived a bride with a love of Shakespeare and a dream for a wedding full of romance and whimsy. With her sights set on the Philadelphia Horticulture Center as the venue, for its overwhelming greens and playful atmosphere, she planned and prepped all the pretty details. More beautiful than she ever imagined, BG Productions Photography captured each magical moment… and they lived happily ever after in the gallery right here.

From The Bride…Josh and I are both professors in Montreal, he studies film and I study poetry and literature. As a young professor of literature, I have always loved Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I reveled in the forest imagery, the mythical creatures, Titania, the queen of the fairies, and the general sense of whimsy and playfulness in the language and scenery. When I got engaged, I knew I didn’t want to have a wedding in a hotel or associated with anything corporate, but rather, we wanted to capture that atmospheric magic and forest playfulness. We chose the greenhouse at the Horticulture Center because it was breathtaking, it overwhelmed the senses with its aromas and intense array of greens, and teh white industrial ironwork of the greenhouse looked spectacular. Our colors were mint green, coral, and yellow. We did a lot of the design details ourselves including making the menus, creating the wedding ceremony programs with poetry by ee cummings, WB Yeats, Kahlil Gibran, 150 handmade origami boxes with chocolates in them, stuffed burlap bags with Caladium bulbs paired with wildflower seeds, etc. I asked my bridesmaids too buy the vera lace yellow dress from Anthropologie, it was under $100 and I knew they could use it again. I also asked them to buy any pair of mint green heels and whatever jewelery I wanted. I bought a pair of Ivanka Trump mint green heels myself with Kate Spade mint green earrings. To continue with the woodland fairy theme, I wore a baby’s breath wreath and our flowers were mostly wildflower filler (solidago, thistle, etc). The greenhouse was so lush that we only needed floral accents. The centerpieces were either mason jars with flowers, a lantern, and candles OR a large center wreath with flowers spilling over the edge and three candles. The men wore gray suits, brown shoes, black suspenders, and yellow gold bowties.

Josh and I wrote our own vows, we had a friend marry us, and we had other friends read poetry during the ceremony. We talk about our partnership, our love for travel and adventure, but mostly our deep connection to each other.

Bali Garden Party-Inspired Wedding

When it came time to pick a wedding venue Georgie and Tim wanted something special. A place not only beautiful – trust me, the Amanusa Resort fits that bill – but also somewhere layered with meaning. In a nod to the Bride’s Indonesian roots and desire for a garden party vibe, they settled on a Bali-set wedding designed by Asmara Weddings and captured by Thomas Stewart. See the whole day here.

From The Bride…Georgie and Tim met at work, in an advertising agency in Sydney. As Tim was leaving the company he decided it was about time he asked Georgie out. She said yes and a year later they went traveling through Europe and South America for six months and moved to New York, where they got engaged. Georgie always wanted to go on safari for her honeymoon so Tim filled their apartment with inflatable zoo animals and asked her to go to Africa with him.

We wanted to get married in a place that would not just mean something to us on the day but in the future as well. Georgie’s mum is not only Indonesian, but her mum and dad have just moved to Bali. We wanted a garden party style venue and when we saw Amanusa, it was easy decision. Plus, it’s Bali.

Planning the wedding was interesting to say the least! We planned the whole thing from the States, with the exception of a 4 day trip to Bali. During this time, we also changed jobs and moved to the other side of the States 6 months before the wedding. When you are doing so much via email and Internet searches you really have to trust the people you are working with.

When they tell you the day goes fast, they are not lying. I think we were both quite taken aback on the day. To have so many loved ones there for you and to see this event you have been planning everyday, actually happening, even better than you imagined, it was almost too much. Someone described a wedding day to us as being like a soldier returning home from war. You can do no wrong. It’s your day to be a hero, so stop for a moment and take the whole thing in.

From Thomas Stewart…Georgie and Tim’s wedding was just epic. I’ve never seen a venue as incredible as Amanusa; at night, the reception looked like a scene straight out of a fairy tale. Despite the heat and crazy humidity, and even despite some random lighting problems during speeches, the day was a huge success. I loved Georgie’s incredible Jenny Packham gown which was super elegant; I also loved the venue styling. The Balinese love their styling!

New Zealand Elopement by Sunshine Wedding Films

You know you’re good when a Minnesota couple ready to elope decides to do so in New Zealand because of your wedding films. Ummm… no pressure or anything. Judging from the final product, it’s safe to say Sunshine Wedding Films totally nailed it, capturing the entire romantic run off beautifully. For a front row seat at the sweetest short film, sit back, relax and press play!

From Sunshine Wedding FilmsPaula and Mike are from Minnesota and told us that when planning to elope, they decided to come to New Zealand because of our films. There was a little bit of pressure involved! They enlisted the help of a local Queenstown heli-wedding planner who helped them with all the logistics, accommodation and vendors.

Paula and Mike stayed in a beautiful, small boutique lodge in the heart of Queenstown. Scott spent the day with them from getting ready, their helicopter flight and mountain-top ceremony followed by a short film shoot by the river when they landed. The morning with them is a quiet, calm time without many people where Scott can chat and really get to know them – forming a rapport that hopefully adds to their experience and enjoyment of the day. One which also translates to the film.

The scenery around Queenstown is simply breathtaking. They were planning to land on The Ledge, Cecil Peak which is a popular spot for weddings because of the amazing views back over the town. Due to weather the ended up landing a little lower down the mountain and although it was raining for the flight, the sky cleared for their ceremony and view revealed.

The reason this wedding and wedding film is a special one for us is largely because of the feedback we had from Paula.

From The Bride… The reaction at the reception was wonderful. Tears, and laughs and a lot of “can we see it again?” or “That was amazing!” So I’ll definitely be sharing it with everyone again. It’s funny, because it occurred to me how what you do is so very special. While everyone loved the photography, the immediate reaction to a still image from a wedding like ours is “What beautiful scenery!!” As it should be. But your work is what captures the emotional element to the day and is what leaves people really understanding the relationship between us. This may seem pretty obvious, or straightforward to you both, but to give you a little insight, my family is spread all over the United States and although we’re very close, they’ve had little opportunity to get to know Mike. We’ve been spending a lot of one-on-one time with family since the elopement, and them seeing what a great guy he is and how happy we are certainly calms any nerves, but seeing the video and ‘spending the day with us’ was really the icing on the cake.

From Ashley KelemenWhen planning a trip down South, I was able to team up with these incredible local vendors to pull together some true southern inspiration! I have always had a fascination with the culture and beautiful scenery in this part of the country, and dreamed of shooting some beautiful inspiration below the dripping spanish moss. Though the shoot was focused on bridal style, we had a lot of fun pulling together a little whiskey bar as an homage to the groom! The day of the shoot, we were hit with an unseasonable rainstorm, which added to the moodiness and drama of the scenery around us.

From Mary Me BridesWith this being Ashley’s very first time to Alabama we wanted to pull together a shoot that gave her the ultimate southern experience. Our inspiration came largely in part from the true southern charm that Alabama has to offer. Taking the classic southern aspects and adding a touch of elegance and a little wow factor we came up with the concept. We wanted to portray the natural beauty of Alabama while still bringing in the elegance we so love.

Ah, Pinterest. Rustic

From the beautiful Bride…When we chose Diablo Ranch as our venue, we wanted to make sure that while a working cattle ranch, that is was not a country wedding. We were all for ‘rustic’ and Pinterest delivered a multitude of ideas. So many ideas that for a while I had several weddings planned in my head. I finally honed in on a picture of an outdoor wedding that used copper colored linens and loved it. I added coral for an accent color and that was it. It allowed for simple lanterns for center pieces and small bottles for flowers. The beauty of this venue was that we didn’t need a lot of color or decor, it really spoke for itself with the scenery and ambiance of being on a mountain.

  • I do like to be crafty and wanted to do as much as we could on our own, not only to help save money, but to make it more personal, for us and our guests.
  • My sister-in-law helped me design the invitations, centered around a little oak tree, as we had the ceremony under a large oak tree. We kept them simple, with embossed printing and used kraft envelopes for a some contrast. We also designed post card save the dates. Going back to the spot where he proposed, which happened to have the venue in the very distant background of the mountain.
  • We found pictures of ourselves with every guest to make the escort cards.
  • We numbered the tables to reflect important dates in our lives.
  • We also asked all of our guests to send their wedding picture to us prior to our big day. We then designed the guest book for each couple to add the picture they sent, along with well wishes so we could share in their day when we looked back on ours.
  • Chalk dipped wine glasses were both the guests’ favors and their place setting at the table.
  • My mom made my garder by taking the lace from her wedding dress and fabric from her mothers wedding dress. She had the wedding dates embroidered on the garder and attached a piece of jewelry that my other grandmother had wanted me to have when she passed away earlier this year.
  • Small things like my parents cake topper from their wedding, 43 years ago, sat at the guest book table, along with a wedding blanket that my late grandmother crocheted for us.
  • We also displayed generations of family wedding pictures from both sides and pictures of friends and family that were no longer with us.
  • We love kids, but wanted our friends to have a night off, so we just had our 7 nieces and nephews at the wedding. We made sure they were well entertained with a chalk board table, bubbles, beach balls, velcro paddles, glow sticks, and personalized mason jars for their drink of choice.
  • The doors were a labor of love and pure pinterest inspiration that my mom tagged. We loved the idea of having something in the middle of the field. We were so fortunate to find these beautiful doors on craiglist and the owner was so excited when he found out what we were using them for.
  • When I found my dress I knew it was perfect for the venue and would add to the outdoor elegance I was looking for. It was linen with lace appliqué and was a beautiful fit. I wanted Rob’s suit to go in a casual direction as well and the beige color was a great match to the linen of my dress.

The DIY was a bit time consuming, but when the day finally arrived we got immense joy from people experiencing all the personal touches we added. I think we were both on a natural high the entire day, but really did soak it all in. Doing ‘first look’ photos took the nervousness away and allowed us to have our moment and then truly relax and enjoy the day. Our friends offered to make corn hole boards as their wedding gift, which sparked the idea to have a few games for our guests. We even played as we were getting ready to walk to the ceremony site. We came up with vows that were about us and asked a good friend to officiate. It made for an intimate ceremony that was truly about us. I can honestly say I don’t remember anyone else being there but the two of us and our friend. Ceremony done, we got to enjoy cocktail hour with our friends and family. The baskets of flip flops were gone before we knew it. We used my grandmother’s china and silver for our place settings. Another way for us to have someone there that was no longer with us. We danced and enjoyed our guests throughout the night. We did ask guests to include a song to dance to on their RSVP. It got people up and moving, as we intended. We ended with a late night fire pit and smores (hand packaged, of course).
