Go Wedding Dress Shopping With a Fashion Blogger!

Hi SMP brides! Today I’m really excited to bring you inside my journey of finding “the one.” Not my fiancé, my dress, of course. Dress shopping for me was a bit painful and to be honest, it took me 7 months to find a dress and experience the connection that all brides talk about. You are probably wondering what in the world took me so long, or perhaps you’ve experienced a similar situation. The process of finding a dress is not always all smiles and happy tears. In fact for me, it was quite the opposite!

Prior to my first appointment I connected with a few married friends on what to expect and I did a tiny bit of designer research. Looking back, I was really clueless. I didn’t consider what styles would work best for my body type and I was very against certain silhouettes. Bad bride! How can you rule out a dress style if you’ve never tried it on before? It was about this time last year when my mother, sister, and I took our first trip into New York to dress shop. Funny fact? I envisioned leaving my first appointment with a signed contract for a dress. Turns out the process was not going to be that easy for me. I visited every major designer and wedding boutique in NYC. Too many to count. My mom and I traveled in and out of the city weekend after weekend. Nothing. We left with nothing! Actually let me rewind…I did say “yes” to a few dresses, but I quickly realized within hours the decision I made was wrong, wrong, wrong.

I took a few weeks off from the dress hunt to clear my mind. At this point, I was very certain about the gown I wanted. Now the battle would be finding a designer to help create it. This was the problem all along, too many bridal shops and designers were so quick to say “no” to customizations. Like most brides, I spent endless hours on Pinterest and other wedding sites. I discovered one of Mark Zunino’s gowns on social media and completely fell in love with it before I even tried it on. After doing some investigation, I reached out to his team to see if they would be willing to work with my budget and timeline. I heard back within 5 hours of the request. Mark’s team was extremely helpful and they even got on a conference call to walk me through the design process. I finalized my contract the next day and sent photo inspiration for my dream dress. There is so much more to this story, but unfortunately, I have to leave some details out so that my dress remains a surprise for my fiancé.

At my first fitting I tried on the foundation of my dress, which is essentially the corset. It acts as the main frame for the rest of the design. So many thoughts were running through my head when I slipped into the corset. I envisioned what it would feel like to put my final dress on the day of my wedding. I thought of Rob’s face when he would see me for the first time and nearly melted. Thankfully, Mark was distracting me by asking a ton of questions. This was my first time meeting Mark, and I have to admit I was a little nervous. Mark works with several celebrities and has designed pieces for some of the biggest names in Hollywood (Sofia Vergara). I highly respect him as a designer and to be able to work with him one-on-one for my wedding dress is an absolute dream come true.

After I tried on the corset we discussed the rest of the design and played around with various silhouettes. Mark even advised on what would look best for my body type. I can’t wait to show you guys the final design after my wedding. It’s so special to me. I promise to share the full story with you…no cliff-hangers this time ;). Best of luck to all of you brides to be out there who are currently on the dress hunt!

Tips on how to find your dream dress

Get inspired.

Compile photos of your favorite wedding gowns. Use it as guidance, but don’t get overly bogged down with details by trying to replicate the exact look you’ve seen on Pinterest.

Sleep on it.

Do not feel pressured to sign a contract because “time is running out.” This is a sales tactic! Make sure you go home and sleep on it.

Do not ask for opinions.

This was my biggest mistake. I was so overwhelmed and confused by others’ opinions, I forgot to stop and consider my own feelings! Trust your gut, and if that isn’t good enough for you then have 1-2 family members or friends weigh in at max.

Stop looking.

If you’re feeling unsure and overwhelmed this is a sign that you need to take some time off from the dress search. This should be a fun process. You can revisit when your mind feels clear again.

Utilize photo collage apps.

If you’re stuck between two styles create a picture collage or a side-by-side comparison of you wearing both dresses. This was advice given to me by my best friend, and it helped me make my final decision.

Follow the signs.

And finally, a few signs that indicate you’ve found your dress: the tears start flowing, your heart starts racing, you feel like a bride, you can’t stop smiling, it’s all you can think or talk about…it’s an emotional connection. It’s the dress of your dreams!!

From The Bride…We always knew we’d get married by the ocean. Being that we both grew up in Los Angeles, we knew we wanted to highlight the West Coast’s splendor. Some of the key interests that brought us together were our love for all things LA, fashion, and history. Bacara was our perfect venue since it exemplified the amazing beauty SoCal has to offer with breathtaking views of the Pacific, its rich Spanish and coastal history, and serene elegance. We wanted to shine just as much as our venue, so part of the fun of the wedding process was our style picks for the Big Day! The wedding dress was a custom Lazaro paired alongside a brilliant blue tux from Theory. We both are passionate about shoes, so we thought it would be a romantic touch to classically match in Christian Louboutins. Our wedding party elegantly reflected the colors we used throughout our wedding process, making sure to tie in everything from our invitations, flowers, and overall decor. It was only natural for us to want to share our fashion passion with our guests, so we decided to get our logo emblazoned on cool black sunglasses as wedding favors! We all enjoyed the sunny Santa Barbara coast in style!

We envisioned a balance of both classically elegant and modern elements throughout our wedding. Our florals reflected the sophisticated softer side of garden roses paired with the more contemporary, playful anemone and blue thistle all fused with grayish greens like eucalyptus and dusty miller. We used our logo, a stylized script A and I representing our initials, throughout our website, invitations, signage, menus and our wedding favors. The predominant colors we adhered to were a classic, bright white and a darker, slate blue. Our vendors really captured our vision of integrating classic and modern elements to produce the perfect amalgamation of our styles.

From Cheeky DetailsBarbara and Trevor are such a beautiful couple, inside and out. Their genuine love for each other really does shine through from the first time you meet them. With five months of planning time, Barbara and Trevor contracted us after they booked their venue which coincidentally is one of our favorites on the island. They chose Hempstead House (Sands Point Preserve), a historic gold coast mansion built in 1912, because it fulfilled their desire to have a setting that was timeless; a blank slate where they could showcase who they were through all of the details of the day.

They said “I do” during a completely romantic ceremony overlooking the water amidst a clear blue sky. Their outdoor cocktail hour immediately followed where guests enjoyed a formal yet relaxed atmosphere just as the sun was setting. After which, guests were directed to find their escort card (which sat on a bed of flowers) and make their way into the mansion by following a beautiful path of white rose petals and candles.

The design concept was really important to Barbara. She knew that she wanted a very romantic French vintage vibe from the beginning and was a wedding planner’s dream come true when it came to all of the details. Since we literally had to bring every single aspect of the wedding into this venue, we were able to really make this huge mansion feel like their home for the night. Guests sat at a mix of rectangular tables, some exposed wood with draped lace runners and some covered with a variation of soft grey, blush and cream linens with just a pop of sequin. An abundance of candlelight flickered on the tables and through all of the rooms of the mansion. Vintage place settings, hand torn menus draped with silk ribbon and embroidered numbers all made an appearance on the tables as well.

The flowers were a mix of large flowing arrangements and smaller trinket pieces all in the muted palette that complemented the wedding. We brought in vintage furniture to the empty rooms of the mansion so that guests could stroll through and enjoy throughout the night. Two of our favorites were Barbara’s grandmother’s dresser (that her mother took pictures in front of on her own wedding day) that we used as part of our dessert lounge as well as her dining room table that Barbara and Trevor sat at that night. Barbara is very close with her grandmother so it made it even more special. Since one of B + T’s favorite things to do is enjoy the mornings together over coffee (also how Trev popped the question), we incorporated that into their favors and sent guests home with fresh beans from their favorite coffee spot.

From The Bride… Trevor and I met through mutual college friends 6 years ago. We then ran into each other in Boston and stayed in touch ever since. We connected instantly and formed an incredible friendship. Turns out after a year of friend ship we finally both admitted how we really felt, neither of us thought we were each others type so we never expressed how we felt! Trevor brought out this giddy high school crush feeling that was so refreshing! Since that day our relationship has been such an amazing adventure. We feel so lucky to have found each other.

Our wedding day was such an amazing reflection of us and to this day was one of the most magical days of our lives. We held in in an empty Guggenheim Estate and got to be apart of every decision for the aesthetic and decor. We wanted our guests to feel like they were attending an event in our own home. Even with over 100 guests it still felt personal and like “us.”

We mixed rented vintage furniture with pieces that had meaning to us. The table Trevor and I sat at was my Grandmother’s dining table and the dresser/mirror that our desserts were set up on was the vanity in my mothers old bedroom. It was the same mirror she got ready for her wedding day in front of. The day was incredibly magical, I transported to another world, a beautiful, ethereal, place I might have dreamt about as a chid. I’ll never forget the way it felt walking toward Trevor for our first look, and the look on his face!

We had Fitzgerald love quotes written on mirrors and on our ceremony program to evoke the time the mansion was built. The menus had hand torn edges, we used hand embroidered table numbers and vintage handkerchiefs were handed out for the ceremony. Long tables filled with candlelight to give a more of a personal feel. The best part of it all was being able to express our love for each other while being surrounded with our closest friends and family!

Blogger Bride: Sorella Muse’s Ultimate Date Night + Engagement Session Tips

Hi SMP brides, I’m so thrilled to share my engagement photos today, as well as some tips for you own engagement shoot! As a wedding photographer myself, I knew a little bit more about what to expect from our engagement session, but I was still nervous and excited for it. Spring weather had finally arrived and my lovely friend Kristina agreed to drive up from Orange County, because we thought it would be meaningful to do the shoot in the Bay Area where we got engaged and where we now live.

The weather forecast for the day of our shoot was clouds and rains, so we were feeling pretty anxious it might not happen at all. On the morning before our shoot, we looked outside and saw that it was bright despite being the sky being entirely gray. We took a chance that it wouldn’t start raining yet and hopped in the car at 11 am. I usually schedule engagement sessions within 1-2 hours of sunset, so already this was going very differently than planned! I had to totally re-set my expectations from that golden glow-y light, and at first I was feeling a little cheated by the weather. But once we were at the beach I felt so calm, and we ended up loving the muted and moody light, especially with the foggy coastal setting. For us, it was a great reminder that things work out if you just go with the flow.

As a digital photographer up until now, I recently bought a Pentax medium format film camera. I used to shoot film in college, and it has completely reignited my passion for photography. So I was thrilled that Kristina would be shooting our engagement session primarily on film.

Since we are getting married in Italy, I wanted our engagement session locations to have a totally different look and feel from the Tuscan countryside, so we chose a mix of the beach and the city. Daniel and I once made an itinerary for an afternoon in the city and we were on our way to a museum, but we got so caught up in talking when I suddenly noticed we were on the Golden Gate Bridge! We laughed, and decided we would go to the beach in Marin and read all afternoon. This is one of the things I love most about our relationship, we make a plan and then throw it out the window when a new adventure presents itself.

City Lights Bookstore was a must on our list of places to visit during our shoot. Daniel once told me he wanted to visit all the greatest bookstores in the world together, and City Lights was the first one we crossed off our list. And I had seen a photo of the exterior of Wayfare Tavern and was completely smitten. It looked like just the sort of place that Daniel and I would stop for a glass of wine after a day of adventuring.

Planning your enagement session? Read below because I’m sharing a few tips that’ll help make you feel a little more prepared to step in front of the camera! I’m so happy to be sharing my wedding planning journey, from inspiration to planning tips, and all that goes into throwing an intimate destination wedding (which reminds me I really need to start looking for a caterer…)

5 Engagement Session Tips

Choosing your locations

I encourage my couples to choose engagement session locations that are emotionally significant to them or that reflect what they might do on a perfect weekend together. You should feel comfortable and relaxed at the location you choose. You certainly don’t need to go to a wide open field to take romantic engagement photos. I love when couples choose to take photos in their neighborhood, at one of their favorite cafes, or the site of an important date or the proposal. Just check with your photographer to ensure there is enough beautiful natural light.

Think like a stylist

If you spend some time thinking about how your outfits fit with the environment of your location, the images will be stronger. I wanted to get a little more dressed up, because I think the engagement photos are a way to mark this special time of our lives! I also knew that our engagement photos would go on our wedding website, so I wanted our outfits to fit the tone of the wedding, fancy but not fussy, formal but fun. I worked with my friend Rebekah of A and B Creative to choose dresses, which was such a fun shopping experience! We looked at pictures of the coast and pictures of San Francisco city streets to think about the colors and styles that would work best.

Prepare your partner

Most guys I know are like “what’s an engagement session?” and most women I know read Style Me Pretty long before they even get engaged! So it makes sense that you need to prepare your groom before the shoot so he knows what to expect. Show your groom some engagement sessions your photographer has shot in the past. Whenever I was looking at an engagement shoot that I really liked on SMP, I would show my fiancé Daniel, so he got a sense of the poses and the kinds of photos we might take. I just told him that he had free reign to wrap me up in big hugs, hold my hand, and kiss me on the forehead, and suddenly he didn’t mind the idea of being photographed quite as much.

Bring thoughtful props

Props or activities can help tell a story, but be warned, props can look real cheesy real fast. I’m averse to anything that looks too Pinterest-y when it comes to engagement photos. I knew for sure, no chalkboards with our wedding date and no balloons. Since we were going to City Lights Bookstore, I thought that it would be sweet if I brought the book Daniel bought for me there. Inside he had written to me “Your eyes are even more beautiful when lost in thought”. When I read that note I knew immediately that he loved me, even though we hadn’t said it yet. And we brought the leather journal with our initials that Daniel gave me when he proposed. Coffee, ice cream, a picnic spread, and cocktails can make for fun editorial detail shots. It can also be sweet to snuggle up in your favorite blanket, or incorporate details from your surroundings, like a rowboat at a lake or a cute basket on a strawberry picking expedition.

Trust your photographer

Often when couples show up to their engagement shoot, the first thing one of them will say is that they are not photogenic. Don’t worry! Helping you to feel comfortable in front of the camera is your photographer’s job. Yes, it can feel awkward at times, but trust that your photographer will find naturalness within the posing. Pretend you’re on a date, relax and interact with each other, and just enjoy being close and snuggling up together, because then the photos will reflect the authenticity and depth of your love.

Modern, Clean + Masculine Same-Sex Wedding for International Duo

For Chris and Chris (this handsome duo), the top priority for their wedding was to find “the perfect place to unite our transatlantic backgrounds, whist doing justice to our love of all things glamorous and fabulous.” The London West Hollywood was the perfect fit — not only are the Grooms currently based in London, but it blended the British class with all the glitz and glamour of LA. See how it all came together, thanks to gorgeous photos from Birds Of A Feather in The Vault!

From The Groom…After dating for eight years, Chris and I decided to tie the knot. We’re an international couple, with one Chris being American and the other Chris British, so we needed the perfect place to unite our transatlantic backgrounds, whist doing justice to our love of all things glamorous and fabulous. Based upon our love of the city and the weather, we knew Los Angeles would be our destination, and, once we walked into The London West Hollywood, we immediately realized that we had found our venue. It was such a perfect fit: not only are we currently based in London, UK – so it allowed us to tie “London” into our destination wedding – the venue blends the best of British class with all the glitz, glamour, and fabulousness that America can offer. We utilized the open rooftop spaces of the hotel, and had the area complemented with white flowers and lots of candles for a modern, clean and masculine look. The cake was a deconstructed three-tier creation, decorated with white orchids and roses, which tied into our masculine and modern theme. The wedding guest list comprised of forty of our closest friends and family, all of who travelled from across the UK and USA to West Hollywood to join us for our special day. During the cocktail and canapé hour, the scenery of the LA skyline at dusk was accompanied by a string quartet playing famous film anthems, and during dinner the DJ began to play, continuing well into the night.

The event was black-tie, intimate, and glamorous. There was such electricity in the air that night, a feeling we will never forget. Being a destination wedding, everyone had travelled so far to celebrate with us – and, as the night went on, the backdrop of the sun setting over Los Angeles made for a truly breathtaking experience. Everyone in attendance knew us very well as a couple and, with the recent passing of marriage equality laws both in the USA and the UK, there was an overwhelming amount of emotion being poured towards us, as we finally had the opportunity to legally declare our love for each other. Having already spent over one-quarter of our lives together, now being able to be legally married means the world to us.

Under the sunny skies of California, we officially became Chris-squared – and against the panoramic views of Los Angeles after sunset, we danced the night away!

Toronto Wedding Full of the Prettiest Spring Blossoms

Erin and Nicholas’ Toronto nuptials are everything that a spring wedding should be: fresh flowers in the bright hues, gorgeous touches throughout and a portrait session in the most beautiful gardens full of budding blooms. From all the pretty details to the Bride and Groom’s radiating love, this wedding is full of endless inspiration! Head to The Vault to see it all from Whitney Heard Photography!

From Whitney Heard PhotographyErin and Nicholas’s wedding was full of spring colours and soft light. The couple got ready at Erin’s mother’s stunning condo in Toronto. The bride had her girls with her to help get ready, which always kept a smile on her face. Each hairstyle was meticulously designed by Duyen Huynh, and wove in touches of florals to each girl’s hair. Erin wore a simple yet elegant ivory crown to compliment her loose up-do. Erin’s natural look was perfected by Cheryl Gushue, a top makeup artist in Toronto. Wearing jewel-embellished shoes, and with flowers in hand, the girls then went to James Gardens eagerly anticipating the first look.

James Garden is full of stunning flowers, willow trees, and glowing light. Nicholas sees Erin for the first time in private, with a short portrait session to follow. You can see how much they love one another by how comfortable they are in front of the camera together. The bridesmaids photos were taken next, followed by the groomsmen. Once the photographs were complete, the group got in their limo to start off to St. George’s Golf and Country Club.

The ceremony was short and sweet, with two tall trees, and large picture windows decorating the space. Cocktail hour started with a glass of champagne to celebrate the happy couple. As the guests mingled and chatted, the bridal party went back outside for a few more images, with the stunning St.George’s Golf Course as their backdrop! Throughout the day, both Erin and Nicholas were such a pleasure to work with, and the entire family was a joy to photograph!

Between the navy blue bridal party wardrobe, and the bright floral arrangements, this wedding holds so much inspiration for the playful spring bride.

Rustic Dutch Wedding Inspiration

I swear in a previous life I was Dutch, at least after looking at this gallery I’m sure going to start claiming to be. Reason being? The Dutch just get me. With an inspo filled with pretty blue pottery and lush bouquets bursting with tulips, it’s obvious I was mistakenly not born in the Netherlands. I mean, wouldn’t you agree? See it all captured by CHYMO & MORE Photography in The Vault!

From CHYMO & MORE Photography Drawing inspiration from the traditional Dutch venues for a styled wedding editorial, Daniella from Naturae Design and photographer Chymo from CHYMO & MORE Photography found a traditional Dutch windmill from the 18th century in the middle of the old city center of Utrecht.
This styled shoot is filled with Dutch elements and soft pastel colors: a mix of serenity blue, soft grey, champagne and blush.

Floral designer & stylist Natalia from bloemenmeisjes.com was inspired by the meaning and the roots of Dutch traditions and habits and carefully chose the flowers and the tableware accordingly. The idea of using the wheat flour and cheese came up to her while she was looking at the paintings of the Dutch Renaissance masters, which pictured still life.

Tulips have been grown in the Netherlands since the Renascence and is truly a beauty with many varieties. These flowers are an integrated part of this shoot in color and the meaning.

Delft Blue porcelain is a fine example of the handcraft of the 17th century. It goes very well with the elegant and playful patterned dishes. The simplicity of the cutlery is balanced with the rustic look of the table. The tiny silver tea-strainer gives the picture a touch of shine and more authentic look.

The Cake designer Alma from Alma’s Bakery worked together with Natalia to decorate the cake with the real flowers. She baked the cookies and meringues that would complement the styling and color palette. They choose a serenity blue base for the cake and added some blush color flowers and eucalyptus leaves.

Photographer Chymo from CHYMO & MORE Photography approached the photos in a way that is soft and calm, with an eye for natural elegance, artistic details, and an appreciation for the gentle touch of winter sun.

Daniella from Naturae Design created 5 headpieces for this shoot. A piece with fresh water pearls dipped in gold inspired by the painting “The girl with the pearl earring” by Vermeer. A comb with golden maple leaves together with a belt made with maple leaves.
She choose the gold tones that would go well with the serenity blue color of the dress and the golden blond hair of the model Caroline and one headpiece made from little dusty blue Labradorite crystals attached to the hair with the bobby-pins.

Calligrapher Joyce from KIJKkalligrafie went along with the romantic color scheme by using a delicate ripped cotton paper, matte blue envelopes and a matte copper addressing.

Beautiful Blues Winter Wedding Inspiration

Whisk me away to the mountains of Austria! This magical land must hold some sort of superpower because I don’t think I’ve ever seen such beauty. Manuela Kalupar captured it all, thanks to the talents of A Very Beloved Wedding who created the scene before us, inspired by the bridal tradition of including “something blue” on your special day. And what a special day this was – see it all in our Vault here!

From A Very Beloved Wedding… This couple’s shoot is inspired by the wedding tradition of “something blue”, which stands for purity, love and fidelity. We find purity in the white snow, love between the couple and the reason for getting married and trust, fidelity in the color blue and in the longevity of a traditional place like Tirol in Austria.

We have different blues, gold and white with some other color details in the flowers. We presented three different types of wedding gowns: the classic white like snow, the dark blue like a romantic sky at night and a golden typical Austrian gown called “Dirndl.” The flower crown (headpieces) provide different color touches as well. The stationery is fine letterpress and the paper has the same structure as wood, an element we find all around this location.

A Cabo Wedding Designed for the Modern Bride

With family spread across 17 different countries, this couple knew a destination wedding was a perfect way to organize the chaos. They chose the beaches of Cabo San Lucas and set out to plan their sleek and chic nuptials with a sexy Baja vibe. From the hair and makeup by Suzanne Morel to entire floral and event design perfected by Elena Damy, there’s so much inspiration to steal and thanks to Ashley Bosnick we’ve got it all inside The Vault!

From The Bride…“Why Mexico?” everyone asked. “Why not?!” I said with a big smile. Douglas is Swedish, I’m from Chicago and we have family and friends spread over 17 countries. We loved the idea of all our friends and family being in the same country (let alone the same hotel) for five days to celebrate with us. And the added bonus of sun and sand for the albeit beautiful but rather pale Swedes made for an easy decision.

We began the festivities on Wednesday evening with a fabulous salsa beach party and ended with a barely able to stand Sunday brunch. It was important to us that everyone have the holiday of a lifetime, endless margaritas, late night tacos, sketchy “high-school spring-break” clubbing, and epic salsa dancing from my mother made the weekend just that – absolutely unforgettable.

Our wedding had a neutral palette with a European vibe and was held at The Resort at Pedregal with the reception held at a private villa in the cliffs of Pedregal. The day was everything we could have hoped for – surrounded by family and friends in a gorgeous place to exchange our vows and celebrate our marriage.

From Elena Damy Destination Weddings… As you can see from the breathtaking photos from Ashley Bosnick, Nina and Douglas’ wedding was the perfect blend of European elegance and modern Mexico. The bride and groom worked closely with our wedding planner, Claudia Morales, to carefully plan each aspect of the wedding weekend.

When it came time to create the event design, Elena Damy, our Creative Director and Lead Floral Designer, was inspired by the couple’s worldly, sophisticated style and playful, down-to-earth charm. Without a doubt, it was easy to bring their graceful tone into the already warm, rustic refinement of Pedregal. For the ceremony, Elena designed a natural wooden structure with an abstract display of cream and white flowers blended with twirling vines and greens. Lining the aisle were tall contemporary glass hurricanes, each holding a single open rose.

The bride’s bouquet mirrored the ceremony flowers, with open garden roses mixed with organic greens loosely cascading for a natural Baja feel. For the reception at Casa Turquesa, Elena layered classic table settings with neutral linens, natural woods, weathered metallic candles, and low, lush flowers for an intimate, family dinner. Subtle wooden Bride and Groom signs were hung on the back of the bride and groom’s chairs, and loosely strung flowers, crystal drops and organic vines hung from the chandeliers overhead.

Nina changed into another gorgeous wedding gown for their cake cutting and dancing into the wee hours! Bright, rich reds and sexy dance tunes put the finishing touches on Nina and Douglas’ amazing wedding weekend!

8 Steps to a Stunning Home Makeover on a Budget

Crazy gorgeous home tours are amazing and all but what really gets our engines purring is hearing the details on how to score the beautiful looks tucked inside. And if those details are budget -friendly? Well that’s pretty much a slam dunk. Helena of Brooklyn Blonde has a seriously stylish space, made even better with the help of Homepolish and HomeGoods. Using a mix of already owned and new items, this Brooklyn abode got a style refresh and it’s just in time for her sweet little bebe on the way.

Personalizing Your Space on a Budget

Rethink your layout to make older pieces feel like new.

For Helena’s living room, a more open layout was key to space feel finished and complete for her husband and baby on the way! She actually wanted to get rid of the couch in this photo originally, but by moving it to the other side of the room and adding some colorful pillows and throws from HomeGoods, the whole room feels completely fresh and airy without the investment of a new furniture piece.

Get creative with art placement

We had the idea to move Helena’s antique mirrors (a collection of flea market finds and family heirlooms) from the wall near the door and instead distribute them across the corner under her staircase. Spreading them across the whole corner vs. keeping them all on one wall makes the desk corner feel like its own little office section.

Gold is always in style

With an ability to double as an accent hue or neutral, gold is one of the most desired hues for ornamenting a space. Helena wanted to keep her home décor relatively monochromatic – similar to her fashion style – as you’ll see, we used a lot of gold as accents, which automatically look luxe and expensive! These marble and gold side tables were only $99 from Homegoods, a fraction of what a designer piece would cost!

Use mirrors to maximize

Mirrors are my go-to piece in order to make a space look larger and feel more upscale. We even hung mirrors behind Helena’s existing bookshelves – they help add so much dimension, and you don’t even notice they are there when you first look!

Be smart about where you splurge

In the dining room, Helena knew she wanted a large farm table so invested in custom a custom piece made from scaffolding from a New York City building. (She and her husband are born and bred New Yorkers, so love this tie to their roots!) This was definitely somewhere where they ‘splurged’ in their home, so we balanced it out with quality, yet affordable dishware from HomeGoods – plates started at $3.99.

Work with what you have

Tiny tweaks can go a long way to make pieces you already have feel like new. Helena owned these mirrored bedroom nightstands for years and was so ready to get rid of them, but instead we swapped out the handles with new edged drawer pulls (from HomeGoods) – and it made a world of difference! Also, Helena’s husband has a green thumb so they have tons of plants all over the house. This cactus actually belonged to her husband’s grandfather. To show off her plants with an updated look, we swapped out the pots with pretty ceramic ones for a fresh take, and flipped over this wire trash can for an impromptu plant stand, which we picked up at HomeGoods for under $10!

Lighting makes all the difference

As a designer, I feel that lighting can transform any room. In the bedroom, we swapped out the lamps on Helena’s side tables with these geometric marble fixtures from HomeGoods. Then, Helena’s husband Keith jumped in and helped us out by replacing the old light fixture – which dated back to the late 1920’s when the house was originally built – with this new, modern piece. We quickly discovered that the ceiling area around the fixture was old and crumbling, so for a quick fix we bought a medallion at Helena’s local hardware store for super cheap – instantly adding a layer of glam to the whole space.

The nursery should be your style, too!

The number one thing to think about when decorating a nursery is that it’s an extension of your home – so approach it that way! Helena and her husband have a sleek, clean aesthetic and so I wanted to make sure that this room stayed true to them. They’re going to be spending a LOT of time in this room in the coming months, so I wanted it to feel like a sanctuary that reflects their personalities. Storage was key in this room, as you can see from these hanging baskets to display books and cute stuffed animals, and oversized trunks to store away the bigger, bolder-looking toys. It keeps the room looking clean and sleek – and also helps that Helena won’t be tripping over toys all the time!

From Carolina Rivera PhotographyColleen and Bill’s wedding was set with the beautiful landscape of New Jersey’s luscious greens, at Willowwood Arboretum in Chester, NJ. That’s one of the things I love about New Jersey, is the variety and depth of locations, that can go from rural, to city, to beach, to mountain, but back to this wedding! – Set amongst the tall grasses, the beautiful flowers and trees in season, so many places to stimulate the senses, and an all outdoor wedding in the summer is just perfect. The in-season food, the subtle decorations to compliment the already existing natural ones, the farm to table look to go with nature, and the crazy live band was a perfect combination for an amazing night. The bride and the groom were also both crossfitters, so their hashtag #starcrossfitlovers was appropriately named for these two, who dropped down in the middle of the dance floor to do push ups together.

13 Bedrooms That Will Make You Want to Redecorate

A Bridal Designer Shares Tips Every Rustic Bride Needs to Read

Whether you’re planning a glamorous New Year’s Eve black-tie bash or a laid-back beach affair, it’s the details that will bring your wedding vision come to life. And if you’ve always dreamt of a rustic day, you’re in luck, because today, bridal designer Sarah Janks is sharing all the must-haves for the perfect rustic wedding. Read on for her tips, and then head to The Vault for even more inspiration!

THE DRESS

The wedding dress will always be one of the hottest topics of the day.  Because it’s kept under wraps, everyone wants to see what the bride is wearing. Embrace your natural style and work with what you have. Your dress choice will be influenced by the venue, indoors or outdoor options and weather.  So, once you have the venue and destination locked in, it makes choosing a dress that much easier.

If your rustic wedding takes place out in the sunlight, choose a dress choice that photographs well in the natural light. Remember that different fabrics reflect light differently — heavy silks and crepes are fluid and move with the body, giving a svelte, sophisticated overall effect. Whereas, floatier choices such as silk georgette and chiffons lend a more ethereal feel to the look. Add a single tier veil for a magical effect or keep it natural with flowers in your hair.

When you put on your gown, you should feel like a million dollars and head out with confidence, focusing on the days celebrations, knowing you look fabulous.

THE VENUE

There’s a wonderful Italian word – sprezzatura – which means style and elegance executed with a certain nonchalance. That is really the rustic feeling for me– seamless, effortless grace and beauty, complemented by a beautiful natural venue and décor.

Every bride has a unique idea of how their wedding should come together and different venues can satisfy these out of the box ideas while still incorporating rustic elements such as:

  • Resorts with a rustic twang
  • Floral gardens with natural beauty
  • A country lodge
  • Vineyard/ Winery
  • The backyard of a sentimental place

THE DECOR

I love white flowers in a rustic setting! It’s similar to the single tier veil – a nod to tradition, but a modern take thereon. Here are some of my favorite rustic décor ideas to incorporate into your own wedding:

  • Use flowers in unconventional ways: weave florals or crystal adornment into the hair rather than a typical flower crown and create a whimsical feel with a flower canopy draped over your aisle/reception. Keep lighting soft and natural
  • Reinvent the Mason Jar: use it as a wishing well and give each guest a piece of paper, have them write a tip for marriage or a well-wish and place it in one of the jars. Or, use the jars as photo frames: Pictures of you and your soon-to-be hubby in each, These could be engagement photos or candids from over the years!

CALLING THE SHOTS

Outdoors or indoors, photos are of the utmost importance- especially with a beautiful rustic atmosphere. Choose your photographer wisely – look through their portfolio and find someone who has the look you’re after and you feel comfortable working with. Map out your day in advance and create a shot list for the photographer. This can include pictures and creative angles with your gals while getting ready to special moments during the reception like the father-daughter dance. My favorite moments are often the candids though– shots taken of the bride and groom or guests that are unaware a photo is being taken. The emotion is so genuine! With that said not all pictures need to be posed. Let your photographer leave your side and don’t panic, candids many times speak louder than staged photos.
