This is What a Year-And-a-Half of Wedding Planning Looks Like

When it comes to planning your wedding, Pinterest can be both a blessing and a curse. In the case of this gorgeous Bride though, it was definitely a blessing. From the night she got the rock until the day of “I Do,” this Bride was dreaming and planning the perfect wedding to her best friend. See all the glamorous pink details, captured by Maria Lamb Photography, in The Vault!

From The Bride…When Oday proposed to me December of 2013 that night I started pinning wedding dresses and everything to do with wedding stuff on Pinterest! I planned our wedding for a year-and-a-half and had time to think and dream and put together my dream wedding! The day of our wedding came and I couldn’t have been more of a nervous wreck. Our wedding venue was a gorgeous garden and we had about 230 people. While I was getting ready in the bridal suite I heard the quartet music beginning to play. My heart was just about to pop out of my chest! My dad kissed me and said “are you ready?” He grabbed my arm and when I turned the corner to walk down the aisle I was completely blown away by the beauty of everything—my groom, the altar, my maids, my guests, and the beautiful surroundings. After the ceremony when we saw the cocktail area and reception area sparkle with pops of blush and gold my heart was full. Me and my husband would sneak away here and there and just talk about how amazing we felt and couldn’t believe it was finally here! My wedding could not have been more magical if I actually dreamed of it in a dream and the best and most magical part was I married my best friend and soulmate that day.

From Heather Rowland PhotographyThis stunning lakeside wedding was the perfect mixture of intimate and elegant. The bride Khaki and her groom Grant made for a beautiful couple and truly set their wedding apart from so many others by emphasizing elements that represented their love, style, and taste. By remaining true to themselves the wedding was simply exquisite yet laid back and extremely personal to this precious couple.

The bride and her bridesmaids spent the morning drinking mimosas and getting dressed overlooking the beautiful Barton Creek resort. Her custom Anne Barge gown was on display and her mom’s vintage veil complimented it perfectly adding a sweet family touch to her bridal couture. Khaki’s invitation suite is by far a favorite of mine and I’d give anything to turn that gorgeous envelope liner into custom wallpaper in my home! It was a unique look that represented Khaki and her ethereal taste so well.

Later that evening the string quartet and chiavari chairs were set for the ceremony overlooking beautiful Lake Travis. As the sun was setting Khaki and Grant tied the knot surrounded by their loved ones on the most perfect September evening. The ceremony was followed by a chic cocktail hour where guests were greeted with a signature cocktails garnished with jalapeños, which made for a nice (and subliminal) Texas touch. Guests mingled on the lawn while the men gravitated towards the cigar bar where cigars were being hand-rolled by professionals on site. Custom matchboxes adorned with the couples name made for a perfect signature touch and take-home favor for guests to enjoy. Beautiful hors d’oeuvres were passed on custom monogrammed cocktail napkins until dinner was announced. Guests then ate family style along the Villa del Lago pavilion lawn and enjoyed southern comfort cuisine under the Texas stars and intimate string lighting.

“The Pictures” a local Austin favorite, set the pace for the evening by playing a wide variety of hit songs both past and present. Guests visited the dance floor all night long while Khaki and Grant relished in the moment in the midst of it all. The bride’s cake was understated and elegant with a bit of an art-deco theme coupled with vintage green crystal toasting glasses, which have been used by Khaki’s family in weddings past. The couple had a classic sparkler exit where they were whisked away by a unique vintage car. This wedding was truly one of my favorite events I’ve photographed to date. It felt so extremely personal and heartfelt while still remaining stylish and upscale.

This Flower-Filled Paris Wedding is an Absolute Fairytale

If this isn’t a fairytale wedding, I don’t know what is. First of all, it takes place at the Four Seasons Paris. Secondly, the Bride wore not one, but two of the most stunning wedding dresses from Galia Lahav and Reem Acra. Then there’s the ceremony flowers from Cristian Collin Esprit Fleurs and the reception flowers from Jeff Leatham and are they ever OMG-worthy. As if that all weren’t incredible enough, Le Secret D’Audrey was on-hand to capture every magical detail. Head to The Vault to fall in love with it all!

From Le Secret D’Audrey… Jeff and Sherry met in Paris so it was meant to be to get married in Paris this last fall in front of their friends and family. To be their photographers in Paris was a dream: each detail was perfectly at their image.

Their floral designers turned their ceremony and reception into a magical day to remember. Thanks to their planner Quintessentially Weddings, the 3 day event was an amazing experience for their guests.

From The Bride… Jeff and I met in Paris 2011 at a business convention. I still remember the day when we walked along Champs Elysees, taking in the scenery, shopping, chatting over a coffee. This is when we got to know each other and when our relationship grew. After his marriage proposal when it came time to decide the venue for our wedding, there was never a moment of doubt that we would choose Paris.

Our greatest moment was when we finally saw each other when I was walking down the aisle during the ceremony. I was holding my father’s arm, walking in, and Jeff was waiting at the end of the aisle. Two people from different cultural backgrounds, Jeff being from the States and myself being from Hong Kong, the moment and the feelings were indescribable.

For future brides, my advice would be to stop stressing about the details on the day of your wedding! Live in the moment and enjoy every second of your wedding. By the time you realize, the wedding will be a memory that you will cherish for a lifetime.

Lastly I would like to give a special thanks to Quintessentially Weddings for arranging everything perfectly, Audrey and Anthony for taking beautiful photos for us and Jeff Leatham and Cristian Collin Esprit Fleurs for the beautiful floral arrangements throughout our venues.

One Wedding. Twenty Children. And One Killer Shirley Temple Bar.

SMPers, consider your day officially made because we’re about to begin a day-long party with Judy Pak. She’s the photographer behind some of the most incredible weddings to hit our pages, and today she’s sharing three “I dos” set across the country. First up? The quaintest New England wedding you ever did see with 20 (yes 20!) darling flower girls and ring bearers. It’s all the reasons we love fall with a nautical, seaside twist and an awesome crew including Hana Floral DesignDaly Planning, and Ripcord who made it happen. Hop to The Vault, and sit tight for more Judy Pak up next.

From The Bride…My husband and I met while working as lawyers in Washington, D.C. We quickly hit it off based on our shared love of music, history, and traveling, and came to discover, strangely enough, that we grew up in neighboring towns along the shoreline in southern New England. We also realized that we crossed paths multiple times in our old stomping grounds.

The Connecticut and Rhode Island shoreline mean so much to both of us. It shaped the people we grew up to be, and in many ways defines who we are as a couple. As a result, when planning our wedding over the course of our year and a half engagement, we strove to craft a wedding weekend that highlighted the area, and was simultaneously a true reflection of us as a couple. We centered our wedding festivities around Little Narragansett Bay – the small body of water that is at the mouth of the Pawcatuck River, which forms the state line between Connecticut and Rhode Island. Positioned on either side of the Bay are the quaint seaside towns of Watch Hill, RI and Stonington, CT. We held our ceremony at beautiful seaside Watch Hill Chapel in homage to my husband’s Rhode Island roots and our reception just across the bay at Saltwater Farm Vineyard, a converted WWII-era airport hanger, near my own home town. Both venues are on either side of Little Narragansett Bay, and in fact, you can even see the top of the chapel from the balcony of the vineyard.

Our theme was seaside coastal elegance – a “wedding by the sea.” We worked with our amazing vendors to bring our vision to life, and to incorporate local, coastal, and seasonal elements. Ladyfingers Letterpress did an amazing job with their personalized invitation suite, which included hand drawn maps and illustrations of the area. They perfectly captured our theme, and laid the groundwork for the esthetic of our wedding.

We held our rehearsal dinner at The Cooked Goose, a warm and cozy restaurant that has long been one of our favorite brunch locations. It was a perfect space to make a large wedding party feel like an intimate family gathering, and the restaurant did an excellent job of crafting a menu that complemented our coastal theme.

We had a Catholic ceremony at the Watch Hill Chapel. The Judge I worked for, who is also a deacon, officiated, with the assistance of Rich’s father, who is an Episcopalian priest. My two cousins (one of whom is my godson) served as altar boys. The ceremony was unbelievably personal because were were surrounded by our families and loved ones, and all of them participated in the consecration of our marriage. We also had 20 children in our wedding, 8 bridesmaids, 7 groomsmen, and 3 ushers. Thanks to our phenomenal wedding coordinator, Daly Sanford of Daly Planning, all the children made it down the aisle flawlessly – even the 3 one year olds who were pulled in a wagon down the aisle.

My dress was a Monique Lhuillier “Azure”, which I fell in love with for being simultaneously timeless and modern. It was soft, romantic, and most importantly, fun to dance in! My bridesmaids wore champagne floor-length Monique Lhuillier bridesmaids dresses of different styles — some included touches of lace. We put our nine flower girls (ranging in age from 12 months to 10 years) in tulle ethereal long sleeve dresses from Nellystella. The flower girls wore baby’s breath flower wreath crowns — they looked like little pixies! Sam Slocum and her team did an amazing job with all of our hair and Shauntelle from Larissa Lake Makeup was incredible in doing everyone’s makeup,

Our groomsmen wore single breasted, peak lapel black tuxedos from The Black Tux — a traditional look with a modern cut. The eight junior ushers also wore black tuxes (mini-James Bonds!), and the three smallest ring bearers wore knee length pants with suspenders and bow ties, with knee socks. Rich is in the Navy and he wore is uniform–we also had a sword arch filled with our dear friends and family in the military.

We worked with our caterer, Thyme to Cook, to incorporate local and seasonal cuisine. We were even able to include produce from local farms where I grew up picking strawberries and getting our christmas tree each year, LoPresti Farm and Maple Lane Farm in Preston, Connecticut. We included locally caught seafood as well—including local bomster scallops and New England Clam Chowder. My favorite element during cocktail hour was our own Butternut Squash station, which included three unique takes on our favorite fall vegetable: Butternut and Apple soup shots, Butternut Squash Arancini, and Buttnerut Squash, Ricotta, and Sage Crostini. We served our main course family style to capture a fall harvest feel–this allowed everyone to try a bit of everything!

Our cocktail hour featured a tasting of Salt Water Farm’s fantastic selection of wines. Thyme to Cook also prepared three specialty cocktails, one named after our cat Emma (a traditional old fashioned), another after my father, the Jim n’ Tonic, (a cranberry gin and tonic), and the third after my husband’s family, the Captain Morgan, (hot apple cider with rum and a cinnamon stick). We even had a special Shirley Temple Bar for the 25 kids in attendance! We topped the evening off with hot apple cider and apple cider donuts from American’s oldest cider mill — the legendary B.F. Clyde’s in Old Mystic, CT.

Paper Tangent created all the signage for the wedding, and did a fantastic job incorporating our palette and bringing everything together. Our favorite was their cocktail sign–which featured a portrait of our cat!

Our biggest challenge was finding a photographer that could capture the feel and look we were going for. We struck gold when we found Judy Pak Photography. Her photography is soft, romantic, and timeless–we knew she would be able to highlight the beauty of the shoreline in a way that we would treasure forever. Her photos were nicely complemented by the work of our videographer, Dean Rocha, who perfectly captured the joy and beauty of our big day. Both Judy and Dean were a delight to work with!

Rich went to college for music composition, and I grew up playing piano, so we knew music would play important part of our day. Ripcord performed for our ceremony (trumpet and piano), our cocktail hour, and our reception. They even learned a song that Rich had written for me for the wedding! Ripcord was exceptional, and had all of the guests dancing all night — especially the kids.

We held our wedding in October and wanted to highlight fall by the sea without defaulting to the typical orange color scheme. Instead, with the help of Yumiko Fletcher of Hana Floral Design, we were able to craft a pallette that was seasonal and autumnal, but also soft and romantic. Our wedding colors included champagne, mauve, blush, with pops of deep wine, gold, and copper elements. We included lots of greenery in our flower arrangements, and garland on the long tables. She executed my vision flawlessly — and is a true artist and a pleasure work with.

We wanted to include a few small, personal details to tie together our theme and venue. Our tables were named for locations along the Connecticut and Rhode Island shore that held special meaning to the two of us growing up. We spray panted small white pumpkins with gold paint to create a varied ombre look and used them for escort cards. Michele Clark of Staten Island, NY did all the calligraphy for our wedding — and did an amazing job. Instead of using a traditional guest book, we had our guests sign a wine barrel, which we are using as a cocktail table in our new home. Finally, our favors were small jars of honey produced from my mother’s beehives.

The most important thing for us was to have a warm, fun wedding full of joy and surrounded by all the people we love. I can’t describe the magical feeling that overcame me during the ceremony, enveloped by the love of my family and friends, when walking down the aisle. Our wedding is something Rich and I will cherish for all of our days — and we could not have dreamed of a better day. It is true that the day goes by so quickly. However, thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make the day special, we will have memories to last a lifetime.

3 Easy Ways To Style A Lob

Raise your hand if you’re part of Team Long Bob. I joined the world’s most versatile haircut club a few years ago and aside from a low bun or down I haven’t found a good style playbook… until now. Brittany Messner of Life, Set Sail is throwing three insanely cute styles our way that will take that lob of yours from daytime, to night out and everywhere in between. Check it.

There is a reason the long bob is so popular, especially for us fine-haired girls! Getting a shoulder grazing cut means less dry time, but even better is that it helps provide more volume and fullness to those of us that aren’t so naturally blessed. What’s more is that is looks good on pretty much everyone, making it the worlds most versatile haircut.

So since this is one trend that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere soon, I wanted to show you my three favorite ways to wear the shorter style. I think it’s worth noting that I always start with the same base, textured curls (or beachy waves below). My hair is naturally curly anyway, so for me this look is what seems to suits me best, but you do you! Working with your own natural texture is going to save you a lot of time when it comes to styling your hair.

[dotted]

Beachy Waves

Prep damp hair with a primer, comb it through, and then work in some thickening mousse before round brushing your hair dry. It’s not necessary to use the round brush technique if your hair is naturally straight or wavy, but for us unruly curly girls, well, we just have to work a little harder!

Then use a one inch iron to create loose curls before shaking them out. Make sure to leave the tail end of your strands out of the iron for a less polished look. Use a texturing spray to finish. If you need some extra hold, feel free to use a little hairspray!

Hipster Bun

Using the beachy waves style as a starting point, section the top half of your hair from ear to ear, twist into a bun and pin. This style also looks great with a loop bun secured with a hair elastic, but maybe a little too sumo wrestler for my tastes.

Soften up the look by pulling out some loose strands around your ears and finish with a light-hold hairspray.

Romantic Chignon

First twist the hair on one side of your head toward the back, grabbing more sections of hair from underneath on each twist. Secure at the back of your head with a bobby pin then do the same to the other side. To finish, take all the hair still left loose in the back, twist it into a bun and pin.

Tip: if you tilt your head back when twisting the first sections you’ll get some nice volume in the back of your head, no need for backcombing! This is my absolute favorite updo and takes me about 2 minutes and 3-4 bobby pins to create.

P.S. Another style to add to your short hair lineup

We see a lot of pretty weddings here at Style Me Pretty, but this Ojai day will stop you in your tracks. It’s not just the beautiful Bride’s wedding dress and beauty from TEAM Hair & Makeup. It’s also the bold, bright color palette and those florals from Rockrose Floral Design. Don’t miss out on any of the pretty — head to The Vault for stunning photos from Michael + Anna Costa Photography!

From The Bride…Our goal for the wedding was to have a family party more than a traditional wedding. We wanted our families and close friends to have time to get to know each other and enjoy the beautiful Ojai Valley.

We chose Ojai Valley Inn for our wedding weekend because it could be a family vacation as well as an event for guests. We greeted our guests as they arrived at the Inn with cocktails on the putting green. We had putters, cocktails, snacks for travelers and personalized golf balls with our wedding date. The day of the wedding was also my uncle’s birthday. Although I was caught up getting beautiful with hair and makeup, the family had a birthday celebration poolside to mark the day. Our suite was busy with the ladies popping in and out to have hair and makeup done. It was casual and relaxed. Niki, my hairdresser made my nieces’ day by giving them gorgeous ringlets. They had never had their hair done before and felt so special to be part of the ceremony. By late afternoon, everyone was cleaned up and ready for the ceremony.

Claudia, our wedding coordinator, kept me hidden until my walk down the aisle. The string quartet started my wedding march, U2’s “All I want is you”. I came around the corner and was floored by the ceremony site. The flowers and lanterns overflowing from the tree, the ombre petals creating my aisle…it was a dream.

Nadine, our officiant, hosted a touching and personal ceremony. Our guests expressed how moved they were by her words. There were definitely tears from the most unexpected guests! When it came to say our vows, I was a bit overcome. I started to sweat and felt nauseated. Being a doctor, I knew exactly what was going on. I was mortified as passing out at my wedding wasn’t part of my vision. Realizing I had about 30 seconds before I was out, I leaned in to my future husband and let him know what was about to happen. He whispered, “Do you want me to pick you up and run you out of here?” I smiled. I sure picked a great guy. When my mom realized what was going on, she beamed. She later expressed, “She had no doubts when she saw how cool and attentively he handled the situation.” We ended up pulling up 2 chairs and completing our vows sitting down. Sure enough, once we said “I do”, I felt a lot better!

We followed the ceremony with yummy appetizers in a gorgeous courtyard. Our small guests got to run around and get their energy out before they were led to their own private party adjacent to our reception space. They were set up with their own 3 course dinner followed by treats and a movie snuggled up on cozy beanbags. I can’t tell you how appreciative the parents were that the kids’ personal “waiter” kept them under control and happy.

Once I had a chance to see our reception table and it took my breath away. Claudia, our wedding coordinator, and Rock Rose, our florist, took my vision and created a fanciful yet glamorous setting. Our intimate table felt like a grand family banquet. It was exactly what we hoped for. Just as the sun was setting, we toasted family and friends for sharing our day.
It was incredible.

From The Bride…From the moment we were engaged, Nick and I knew the priorities for our wedding were simple: we wanted to spoil our guests with a delicious meal, we wanted to hear our favorite music throughout our entire wedding, and we wanted our wedding to be meaningful and represent us as much as possible. We wanted a party! With lots of glam DIY. Our long engagement gave us time to think through every detail and incorporate traditions only if they made sense to us. With the help of some incredible vendors and our friends and family, we made it happen and couldn’t have been happier with our beautiful wedding in our favorite city in the world: San Francisco, California.

We knew a San Francisco wedding on an average budget would be tough to plan but were stubborn about finding a venue that would work in a city that means so much to both of us. My parents were married in San Francisco and would be celebrating their 32nd anniversary a few days after our wedding date. The Farallon Restaurant took some time to find but it ended up being perfect for our day. Delicious food: check, classic and whimsical decor AND private dining spaces: check! It also happened to be in the same building as the Kensington Park Hotel- a perfect spot in the iconic Union Square for us and our guests to stay on our wedding weekend.

We lucked out with Eileen, our photographer with OneLove Photography. She lives in San Francisco and you could just tell how much she loved being able to photograph us in our favorite city. She captured Nick and I, our wedding party, and our wedding details beautifully. I practically die of happiness every time I see the photo of Nick and I in Union Square in front of a cable car and traffic all around us. It was a tricky shot to get but worth it!

The moment I saw Christine Cater’s pinterest board and talked to her on the phone, I knew she was the florist I was looking for. My vision for the flowers changed a few times and Christine was so flexible and professional throughout the process. And her energy on the day of the wedding was fabulous- you know someone is awesome when your bridesmaids comment on how cool your florist is!

Our team of amazing (mostly female!) vendors doesn’t stop there. Our day of wedding coordinator (but really month-of), Elizabeth Mauricio with CoCo Creations was wonderful at handling my crazy long list of details while simultaneously looking calm and professional every time I saw her (I wish I knew her secret!). Getting ready was one of my favorite parts of the whole weekend thanks to our incredible team from StyleBee. We had a few last minute additions for hair/makeup and Chantelle still managed to get us all looking glam early- giving us more time for pictures! Speaking of looking glam, one of the best decisions we made was to let our wedding party pick out what to wear, with a couple color suggestions. I made a Rent the Runway list of long, gold dresses and each bridesmaid picked out her own gown and chose shoes and how to do her hair/makeup. I wanted everyone to feel like our wedding was a fun chance for them to feel 110% and I couldn’t be happier with how beautiful everyone looked for our wedding.

I think if I were to give a tip to newly engaged couples it would be to look at planning and preparing for your wedding as opportunities. At times it felt like all of the details of the wedding were weighing me down but looking back on it I realize that even the more tedious tasks made for some of my favorite memories. My parents helped me spray paint toy dinosaurs gold – a last minute addition that ended up being one of those details that all of our guests were raving about. In the weeks leading up to the wedding, every one of my bridesmaids helped make our DIY candle wedding favors and tassels for the massive balloons that brought some whimsy and our colors to our ceremony space and some added fun photo ops during the reception. Nick and I made all of the signage together and hand picked songs for our harpist to play during our cocktail hour (who doesn’t want to hear harp renditions of Taylor Swift?!). It’s a wonderful feeling to recognize how much the people you love are ready and willing to step in and help you at any moment – no matter the task. Bask in it!

From Ana Lui PhotographyWhen Ibiza wedding designer, Cristina Di Giovanna of Le Jour Du Oui, called me saying she wants to shoot an inspiration session with me and she mentioned hand made macrame, pastels and aztec patterns I knew this shoot will be amazing. Combining sunning natural beauty of Ibiza and sourcing local collaborators was so fun! We have spoken with local designers, bakers, met few real life couples and looked for heart shaped cactuses in the fields of IBIZA. And when we shared the mood board with Kristin from Flowers Ibiza she jumped up with excitement, from that moment we knew we have THE perfect team on board! Floral design, ceremony arch and bouquet came out exactly how we have imagined it. Lovely Sharon from Cup Cake Collection Ibiza made an amazing cake for us to play with, our stationary was shipped from Italy same day of the shoot. Stunning dress hand made by Ylva Kailash fitted Tiana perfectly. It was windy like hell and everything was flying around but we pulled it off and got super lucy with the most amazing, moody, pinkish sky and light ever! I am so grateful to everyone who made this happen. I absolutely love working with Cristina and it feels very special each time you discover there are so many creative and cool people around your area. It’s just a matter of getting together and getting inspired. All images are shot on film (Fuji400H) developed and scanned by amazing Laura @ Carmencita Film Lab!
