This Intimate Wedding Will Tug Right At Your Heartsrings

Sometimes, the best things come in small packages. Case in point? This intimate Phoenix wedding. From the handwritten notes for each guest to the wine ceremony featuring a bottle bought by the Bride’s parents when she was born to use on her wedding day,  this wedding is all kinds of special. And it only gets better from there. Get all the feels, thanks to Michael + Anna Costa Photography, in The Vault!

From The Bride…Tony and I met when we were least expecting it. I was living in Phoenix at the time, and Tony in LA. One summer weekend a friend and I decided to take a road trip to LA for a college friend’s 30th birthday. I hadn’t seen our friend in ten years, so I was really excited to reconnect. She invited her new boyfriend to her birthday party, along with his two roommates. One of those roommates was Tony.

If you told me that day I was going to marry Tony, I wouldn’t have believed you. He made up a story about being a racecar driver, which I did not find amusing. But by the end of the night he dropped the racecar driver act, and I got to know a very complex, intelligent, and caring man. I was smitten. We all stayed the night at the party, and when I woke up the next day Tony had already left. Naturally, rather than asking anyone for Tony’s number, I social media stalked him.

After I found him I decided to take the risk and reach out. We met up in San Diego a couple months later for our first date and started a long distance relationship after that, which was made possible thanks to our Southwest Airlines credit cards. Our reward miles carried us back and forth for a while until I was ready to take the plunge and move to LA. Once in LA, Tony and I spent a lot of time double-dating with my college friend and Tony’s roommate. And we proudly stood by their side as they married each other a year later.

We were going for a hike down to the beach after work, so I put on my gym clothes- not cute lululemon gym clothes either. I didn’t bother re-applying my morning’s smudged makeup or brushing my hair- why would I??

I’m a planner, so I was talking to Tony about what we were going to have for dinner that night- a frozen pizza and roasted vegetables. I couldn’t figure out why he didn’t seem as excited about this as me. I had no idea he was nervously checking his pocket every two seconds making sure the ring was still there. We watched the sunset together and he was noticeably irritated by another couple that was walking close by. I joked with him that it wasn’t our private beach, and to stop being so cranky. After the couple had passed and we were all alone, Tony got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was holding the most beautiful ring I had ever seen and trying to comprehend what was happening. Before I said “YES!” I must have said, “Is this really happening?” twenty times. We celebrated afterwards at a resort on the ocean cliffs with champagne and an amazing dinner that put my frozen pizza to shame. It was the best night of my life, knowing that I was going to get to be his partner forever.

I worked for a catering company in college, so I’ve been behind the scenes in more weddings than I can count. In my experience, the best weddings were small, intimate, and laid-back. I wanted every detail to be unique to us as a couple, and to stay true to the boho-vintage-romantic style that we were going for. This meant a small wedding with just family and close friends in a beautiful, unique setting that was both relaxed and elegant. Oh, and all on a tight budget.

Tony and I had moved to Denver since getting engaged, but all of our family and friends were spread across Arizona and California. I did a Google images search for romantic wedding venues, and much to my surprise I found everything I was looking for at a rustic venue in Phoenix. To save money and more easily secure vendors, we chose to get married on a Thursday.

Planning the wedding from Denver was not easy. I shipped all of the decorations and things for the ceremony and reception to my mom in Tucson, who rented a van and lugged it all up to the venue the day before the wedding. We couldn’t have done it without her!

I think we made it pretty difficult on ourselves by not going with anything ‘out of the box,’ but we really wanted to tailor things to our style. What I’m most proud of is Tony’s fully-custom ensemble. We put together his outfit piece by piece with a very specific look in mind. And we had fun with it too. We went to the custom clothier together and designed the suit and shirt, and even met with a tie maker to create his bowtie (we went to four fabric stores!). It seems crazy, but looking back on the pictures we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. If you have a really specific vision for something, you don’t need to limit yourself to what you see online. It might be a lot of work, but you can get creative!

I felt strangely calm when the day came. You really do feel surrounded by love, like you have an army of people around you ready to take down anything in your way. My Grandmother gave me her mother’s white and blue handkerchief as my something borrowed, old, and blue. I also wore my Great-grandmother’s ring and used her broach in my bouquet. It felt comforting knowing a part of her was with me that day.

Having a small wedding allowed us to do a lot of things that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. We wrote notes to all of our guests, telling them how much we loved them and what it meant to have them there with us. We sealed them in matching little envelopes and stamped their names and table numbers on the front and clipped them to twine strung in a big tree at the entrance, doubling as seating assignments. Our guests loved that special little touch.

My favorite part of our wedding was the ceremony. Instead of trying to rush through it to get to a party at the end, I made a point to slow down and enjoy each moment of becoming husband and wife. My mom and dad walked me down the aisle to “It’s Over” by one of our favorite bands, Civil Twilight. Weeks earlier, we met the band at one of their shows and told them we were using their song in our wedding. The lead singer was so excited. He explained the meaning of the song as surrendering yourself to someone who you love so much that every time you look at them, it’s over, you’re powerless.

Our brother-in-law officiated our wedding and added the perfect mix of humor and touching emotion. We decided to do a wine ceremony, which was a lot of fun. We used a bottle of wine that my parents bought when I was born and saved for my wedding day. Our family and wedding party poured the wine we would drink into a ceramic chalice that my parents drank out of on their wedding day.

We sealed a bottle of wine and little love letters our guests wrote us into a wooden box that Tony made, and promised to open everything on our anniversary in five years. We took turns reciting the vows we wrote to each other, and I remember everything else fading into the background. It was beautiful.

The reception was full of surprises. Tony’s brother gave a very sweet speech that all of the sudden turned into a singing performance by he and his sisters. And then my friends got up and did the exact same thing! They had also written a hilariously clever song and performed it for us, not knowing about Tony’s brother’s plans. We laughed so hard we couldn’t feel our faces!

My advice to other brides comes from my Grandmother, who eloped when she married my Grandfather; they’ll be celebrating their 59th anniversary this month. You don’t need a big, fancy, expensive wedding to have a successful marriage. What’s important is to do what’s right for the two of you-whatever that is. Know that everyone will have an opinion about everything, but this day is for you and your future husband, and that’s what matters.

A Beautiful Florence Affair Bursting with Vibrant Red and Pink Hues

Choosing a Big Day locale isn’t always easy, but for this darling duo with a love of Italian food and a dream of touring Italy, the choice was simple: Florence.  They whisked off to the land of romance and fine wine with their closest friends and family, all with the help of a talented team of vendors like Devoted To You, Tuscany Flowers and Chris+Lynn Photographers.  The results? Absolute magic with some of the most beautiful details you will ever lay your eyes upon.  Soak them all in in THE VAULT.

From Chris + Lynn Photographers… Robin & Gary knew that they wanted a small wedding with their closest family and friends. Robin had always wanted to go to Italy, and Gary had never been to Europe. After deciding to do something different, they planned to have a gorgeous wedding surrounded by gorgeous views of Florence. 40 guests traveled from various places to witness their beautiful wedding and celebrate with them. Robin wore a stunning Vera Wang wedding dress, and their decor was absolutely breathtaking with vibrant colors such as persimmon, strawberry, and papaya.

From the Bride… Gary and I started looking for a wedding venue in our hometown of Toronto but couldn’t find anything that was right for us. We decided we wanted to do something different and also small and intimate with our friends and family. We knew we wanted to have a romantic honeymoon in Europe afterwards… having a destination wedding there first seemed like the perfect solution.

We decided on Europe because Gary had never been there and we envisioned traveling together by train after the wedding. Our next decision was which country…our love of Italian food made Italy the winner! After reviewing many locations, we decided on Villa Vedetta for the amazing view of Florence – it is incredible! We wanted an outdoor wedding and it had a wonderful setting for a garden ceremony, cocktails by the pool, and dinner on a terrace facing a spectacular view of the city. The staff there also had a high level of service, was fluent in English and showed great attention to detail. It was the perfect choice!

Our wedding planner Carmen helped us through the entire process of planning our destination wedding by coordinating vendors and working with local counterparts to coordinate additional tour-related activities for our guests.

We wanted all our guests to really experience Florence so we planned a lot of activities. One day we brought everyone to a vineyard in Tuscany for a tour, wine tasting, and lunch. Another day we went to Sienna to explore the town and cathedral and to San Gimignano for local shopping. Yet another day we organized a guided walking tour of Florence. Throughout all these activities all our guests took photographs. We surprised each guest with polaroid cameras as a welcome gift when they first arrived at our hotel. We invited them to use these cameras for the duration of our trip and share the photos with us. And we made a contest as well with different categories. This was one of my favorites ideas because photography is so important to us and this activity brought us all together throughout the wedding week events. At the wedding, all the polaroids were displayed on ribbons in the reception hall; it was nice for everyone to see the trip through all the guests’ photos.

Some of my favorite memories from our destination wedding were the anticipation of getting ready and spending time with my maid of honor; taking photos on the streets of Florence, exploring the countryside of Tuscany in a vintage convertible, and our post-wedding portrait session with our photographers at the Abbey of San Galgano. It was a great adventure!

From Devoted To You… Planning this wedding for Robin and Gary has been a personal labor of love for me. From the moment we met, we clicked right away. It is always a bonus working with a bride who has so much in common with you and share the same interests. The countless hours we spent working together did not feel like work at all. We explored many cities and venue options in Europe and finally landed on Villa Le Vedetta, which has the best view of Florence and such a beautiful garden for ceremony. It was only 1.5 km away from the wedding venue of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, and we were there just a week before their wedding, so being able to avoid the paparazzi crowd was a fortunate bonus. It was a lot of fun and adventure traveling with Robin and Gary since they haven’t been to Florence. In addition to planning the group activities for the guests and making sure they had a great time, I had planned the week full of activities. I made sure everyone had time to experience Florence the way it was meant to be experienced. But equally importantly, I wanted the photographers and videographers who were with them to be able to maximize all the photo and video opportunities. I think one of the essential aspects of destination weddings is to be able to take advantage of the beautiful and unique sceneries as backdrops and take as many photos as you can.

We coordinated all the airport and train station pick-ups for the guests and kicked off the wedding weekend with a warm welcome dinner. The following day, we arranged a tour to the country side of Tuscany where we had wine tasting and lunch at a castle, followed by walking tour in the medieval town in Sienna and San Gimignano while Robin and Gary snuck away from the tour and rented a vintage car to drive around the countryside with Chris + Lynn and StillMotion following them. On the wedding day, guests were invited to a walking tour in Florence while Robin and Gary prepared for their big day. The dinner view at the terrace of Villa Le Vedetta was so surreal with Duomo in the background. Everyone had a great time and wished that the night would not end.

On the last day, we planned a farewell breakfast for all the guests to say goodbye to the bride and groom before they departed to the next stop in their trip.

A Classic Charleston Wedding Straight Out of a Magazine

Like any good Southern wedding, this Charleston day is full of charm, grace, and a whole lot of pretty. With the Bride in a beautifully beaded Badgley Mischka gown and the Groom looking dapper in a classic black tuxedo, the pair looked right at home at their gorgeous William Aiken House venue. From Dana Cubbage WeddingsTaylor + Joe’s wedding day was the PERFECT way to kick off the official start of the 2016 wedding season! I absolutely love shooting at the William Aiken House in downtown Charleston and Mother Nature was pretty much showing off for us, giving us nothing but blue skies and sunshine on their big day. Taylor looked absolutely stunning in her elegant Badgley Mischka gown with intricate beaded back. It was a showstopper, for sure! Joe looked so classic + dapper in his black tuxedo. These two looked like they could’ve stepped right out of a bridal magazine! I’m serious! They are such an amazing couple, both inside + out. I just LOVED spending the day with them!

After their First Look, we were joined by their bridal party for photos and it was plain to see just how loved and supported Taylor and Joe are. It was so much fun, watching them celebrate with their friends + family throughout the day. This is why I LOVE what I do! Taylor surprised Joe by having their wedding hashtag #jt2016experience posted on the marquee outside of the American Theatre, which is right next door to the William Aiken House. So, of course, we had to stop traffic and take some photos of them in the middle of King Street in front of their sign!

Their ceremony was held outside beneath the pergola and it was equal parts beautiful, unique, and memorable. I love how they mixed it up by having the bridesmaids + groomsmen line both sides of the altar, instead of the traditional arrangement of girls on the left/guys on the right. It was really fun and unique. I love it when clients do things “their way” instead of adhering to old, silly traditions. Guests enjoyed cocktail hour on the lawn before heading inside for a seated dinner. After dinner, everyone headed back outside to the dance floor to watch Taylor + Joe’s First Dance together… and then the dancefloor was packed the rest of the night! It was a beautiful way to kick off the start of a very busy wedding season and I can’t imagine spending it with anyone else.

The Cutest Ever Tropical Calligraphy Party + Free Desktop Download!

This pretty little party right here combines two of my very favorite things: calligraphy and all things tropical. Lovely lettered palms and plenty of gold ink make their appearance in true Laura Hooper Calligraphy fashion at her Hawaii workshop designed by Opihi Love—and it’s all the inspiration I need to hone my own lettering skills. Don’t miss the fun (and free!) desktop wallpaper downloads below!

After two years of workshops around the US & Canada, Laura Hooper Calligraphy was able to take her beginner calligraphy workshop to the island of Maui thanks to the team at Opihi Love Wedding & Event Design. With the help of several of the island’s top vendors, the team landed at Hali’imaile Distilling Company, a vodka distillery that is nestled the middle of the sugar cane fields. The barrel room was open air and was brilliantly styled with black and white and palm fronds. Each place setting had bouquets of island flowers as well as the kits provided by Laura. The team created a lovely event with details inspired by the island culture, and it’s one you don’t want to miss!

Laura Hooper Calligraphy is currently offering pointed-pen calligraphy workshops around the US & Canada! The workshop covers the tools & basics of calligraphy to get you started and then delves into a full alphabet.

Can’t make it to a class? Laura also offers a video tutorial that can be purchased along with a starter kit to learn calligraphy in the comfort of your own home or you can find her teaching in the Modern Calligraphy Summit alongside 8 other calligraphy industry professionals!

The Perfect Accessory for This Southern Bride? A Family Heirloom Veil.

This wedding is “Southern classic” in every single way. Beginning with an heirloom veil worn by the bride (her grandfather first bought it for his daughter even before she was engaged!) and ending with a moonshine bar set-up at the reception, the entire affair was a celebration of this couple’s Southern roots. Pop over to The Vault for images by Anna Routh and don’t you dare miss the film below from Blueberry Creative.

From Anna Routh Photography…. Alden and Kevin’s classic Charlotte wedding was one of the most spectacular events I’ve ever had the pleasure of photographing. Alden’s style is spot on, so it’s no surprise her gown was a complete stunner with that amazing back detail. She pulled her look together with an antique veil (a family heirloom), shoes with just the right amount of bling and simple jewels. She was truly the picture of elegance.

Alden and Kevin’s family is incredibly important to then, so keeping the wedding party to family and including very special items from their parents’ marriages was an important decision for them. Alden and Kevin each walked down the aisle with small books that were presented to Alden’s parents on their wedding day in their hands, keeping the love of their families close at all times.

The reception that followed at the modern Mint Museum UPTOWN in Charlotte was nothing short of epic. Utilizing three areas of the museum, Alden’s goal (with the help of her creative and ambitious father’s vision) was to bring a ‘Southern’ scene to life. To say she accomplished that is an understatement. From the giant Magnolia brought in for cocktail hour, to the projections of moving magnolias on the walls and life size photos of iconic southern imagery, to the dining room dripping with neutral florals, and even down to the moonshine bar – it doesn’t get much more southern than that.

Alden and Kevin’s wedding was an absolute blast, and I’m so honored to have been a part of it. Congratulations, you two!

Think You’ve Seen An Elegant Beach Wedding? Think Again

The Hamptons. The name alone evokes luxury and elegance. And this East Hampton wedding from Brklyn View Photography embodies that classic Hamptons style. From the Bride’s monogrammed Jack Rodgers sandals to the handmade driftwood arbor adorned with soft, romantic flowers, this fall day is the beachy elegant wedding of our dreams. See it all now in The Vault!

From The Bride…When it came to planning our wedding we knew we wanted it to be a fun and intimate event that reflected our style as a couple. We grew up at the beach and wanted to incorporate the beachy elegance of The Hamptons into our wedding. After visiting East Hampton Point we knew their waterfront location was the perfect fit. We were married overlooking the water, surrounded by close friends and family, by the same judge that had married Brenden’s parents, and there was not a dry eye in the room by the end of the ceremony.

Little details were carefully planned to personalize the day. A custom laurel wreath monogram was created for our invitations and a vintage map of East Hampton was used for the envelope liner. For my something blue, I wore a vintage brooch on my bouquet that my Mother had worn on her wedding dress. We also created two signature cocktails, Little Plains Beach, the location where Brenden proposed, and Navy Beach, one of our favorite spots in Montauk.

The floral design was one of my favorite parts of wedding planning. We incorporated mercury glass vases and votives into the table design, along with pops of blush flowers to add a soft romantic feel. A handmade driftwood arbor filled with flowers created the perfect backdrop for our ceremony and fit in perfectly with the scenery.

I have been planning my wedding ever since I was a little girl and the day was everything I could have ever dreamed of and more. We were so lucky to have the help of our amazing families and vendors to make the day so perfect.

A Romantic Wedding at a Santa Monica Restaurant

This stunner of a wedding has “chic” written all over it.  Think a crazy cool Santa Monica setting (hello, Tiato) meets beautiful blooms from A Touch Of Lavender meets a bride and groom who are adorable in every.way.possible.  In other words?  This wedding is sooo awesome.  Head to THE VAULT for every gorgeous image captured brilliantly by Alex Warschauer.  You’re going to love every last one.

From Alex Warschauer… Shannon & Jonathan hired me for a wedding that was to take place at a gorgeous Santa Monica restaurant called Tiato. I met Shannon the morning of in her suite at The Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica. Upon arrival Shannon was just about to give out presents to her bridesmaids and family. Some of the gifts included floral manicure kits, cotton bathrobes, and even a Tony Danza shirt. While the girls got ready I was in the bedroom photographing the dress and accessories Shannon was going to wear. As I do with mot of my weddings, I wanted to get a shot of the wedding bands on one of the save-the-date’s. Shannon chose a beautiful cardstock with watercolor floral details and gold foiling. Besides for the wedding dress, which was stunning to photograph, I was blown away by the hanger it was on. I normally use my own custom hanger for the dress photos but this particular hanger was something straight out of a fairytale. After makeup and getting into the dress, Shannon made some quick adjustments to her outfit and was then headed outside to see her groom for the first look.

Jonathan was waiting for us across the street just off of the jogging path that over looks the beach. Everyone got into their positions; it was go-time for the first look. Without a whisper of a word, Shannon gave Jonathan two delicate taps on his shoulder. From the moment that Jonathan turned around and saw his bride for the first time his smile went from ear to ear. We took some quick shots on the deck and then we were headed out to Tiato for the ceremony.

Tiato has a great layout and an even better look. The ceremony took place at their intimate outdoor courtyard that boasts both rustic and woodland styling. Encompassing the guests and dining area were separate sections of herb and citrus gardens, succulents, and tea lights. The ceremony was very intimate with both couples reading hand written vows to one another. Once the ceremony concluded we headed outside with the bridal party for photos. We dodged cars for a bit standing in the middle of the street taking some gorgeous dusk shots. I took Shannon and Jonathan around the block for some industrial inspired photos and then it was back to the venue for cocktail hour and family photos. The reception took place outdoors and had a romantic ambiance about it. Everyone’s name card was attached to a potted baby succulent and the tables were tastefully decorated with white roses and babies breath. After speeches and dinner we headed inside for dancing and the cake cutting. Guests continued to dance well into the night while others could be found at the photo booth, outside roasting marshmallows over the fire pit, or at my favorite spot, the bar.

This Modern Wedding Proves Wine Caves are The New Venue Trend

Living in Boston, I’m a huge sucker for autumn in New England but this wedding photographed by Sylvie Gil made me realize how equally perfect that time of year is on the opposite coast. Set at Northern California’s Calistoga Ranch, the team at Bustle Events designed a wedding that fully embraced the season, including a ceremony in the coziest wine cave you’ve ever seen. Click here for so much more.

From The Bride… Like most brides, I think simply being surrounded by those I love and care about made the entire day feel special. I think our wedding was unique because everything I chose was original and a genuine reflection of us. I didn’t want to do anything cheesy that had been done a million times before.

Instead, I allowed our stunning venue – Calistoga Ranch, which is nestled in Northern California’s wine country – to set the scene for an enchanted evening. Since it is so gorgeous in its simplicity, I chose understated decorations that complemented the space rather than distract from its beauty.

We were married in a candlelit wine cave which was a new experience for most of my guests. After the ceremony, everyone was bussed to the vineyard on the property where we had dinner. When dinner was over, guests were bussed back up to the wine cave, which had been transformed into our reception area.

We absolutely succeeded in creating an intimate evening that felt like a good old-fashioned party – dinner and dancing among friends and family – rather than a stuffy wedding.

My best advice for someone planning a wedding is to stop always thinking you can do better. It’s easy to get caught up in, “maybe that venue is better,” or “maybe that bakery is better,” or “maybe that band is better.” Know what you’re looking for, trust your intuition and make decisions. Don’t let yourself get bogged down in the details. Otherwise, your search could be endless.

Another golden piece of advice I was given and would absolutely pass on is to budget for a videographer. My wedding planner told me this, and boy am I glad she did. Oftentimes, brides budget for flowers, music and photos. A videographer becomes a “nice to have,” not a “need to have.” We went with Grover Films.

Our wedding day was so surreal and overwhelming that I think most brides would agree that when you’re in the moment, it’s easy to miss a lot of the details of your wedding. Sean and I were so relieved to have a video to watch long after it was all over. It was incredible to see everything again – to go back in time and relive those moments – and it’s a different experience than simply looking at photos.

Trust your wedding planner. Read reviews on Yelp. And finally, prioritize what’s important to you. For me, it was delicious food, a stunning venue, superb lighting and good music. Everything else was fluff.

The Dresses from Pronovias’ 2017 Collections Are Too Pretty to Miss!

We’re no Shakespeare, but when it comes to Pronovias wedding dresses, we could wax poetic all day long. Our latest muse? The 2017 Atelier Pronovias Collection and Pronovias Collection. Creative Director Hervé Moreau has done it again, infusing Pronovias‘ signature modern elegance and chic sexiness with airy and exquisite details. Pop the bubbly — you’re about to majorly fall in love!

Pronovias’ Atelier Collection for 2017 is what your bridal dreams are made of. With an emphasis on the most luxurious fabrics — from the brand’s signature lace to the new stretch chiffon — each and every design was created to highlight the Bride’s figure.

Empire waist dresses in fabrics like crepe cut on the bias give a flowing sculptural effect while the layering of lace on voluminous tulle give that floating-on-a-cloud effect. And of course, there’s Pronovias Atelier’s hallmark mermaid silhouettes refreshed with detachable trains so you can be bridal at the ceremony and sexy for the reception!

All that glitters is gold with Pronovias’ 2017 Collection. With embellishment and a touch of glimmer at the shoulders, waist, bust and back, the Pronovias Collection gowns guarantee all eyes will be on you as you float down the aisle. Want even more of a wow factor? Don’t worry, the subtle nuances of color, like the layers of tulle in pastel hues, and the stunning backs finished with lovely lace, flowing crepe and effervescent gauze will make you look like a goddess from every angle.

There’s nothing stopping you from finding a gown as elegant and beautiful as you and your wedding. Soak in all the gorgeous gowns at Pronovias now… and don’t be surprised when you want to wear them all!

p.s. See all the dresses come down the runway with our Livestream Friday at 2:30 EDT!
