The Reasoning Behind This Bride’s White Feather Will Make You Cry

No doubt that this wedding is beautiful, but even more so? It’s filled with meaning. Take the white feather tucked into Annie’s bouquet. Fair warning, you’ll want to grab a few tissues before reading through the sentiment behind it below, but suffice to say that Jacqui Cole Photography has captured it all and we’ve got it waiting for you in The Vault!

From Jacqui Cole PhotographyAnnie and Dave wed at the stunning Lake Forest Armour House. Their ceremony was amongst the greenery of the gardens and their reception in the historic ballroom. Hints of soft lilac and greenery were the focal colors which complemented the lush backdrop of the gardens perfectly. Annie wore a sleek Elizabeth Fillmore gown while carrying a simple, elegant arrangement of white roses. Tears of joy continued to flow throughout the day. When the rain started falling halfway through their garden ceremony Annie and Dave joined hands and announced for their guests to join them inside. A little rain couldn’t dampen their spirits!

From the Bride..Dave and I dated for about three years before we got engaged. We are obsessed with our German Shepherd, Brandy, so naturally Brandy was involved in the proposal. Dave asked me to go on a lake path walk one Saturday afternoon. Midway through our walk, I tried to get Brandy to pose for a selfie with us with the lake in the background, and Dave snuck around behind me and got down on one knee!

The first vendor I booked, even before I knew the venue, was our photographer, Jacqui Cole. She photographed my friend’s wedding, and I knew that I wanted Jacqui to photograph our wedding, too – not only is she incredibly talented, but she is also such a warm, sweet, and fun person to be around (which is pretty important since she is one of the few people around for some of your most special and intimate moments, like the First Look!). I asked Jacqui for a list of her favorite venues in and around Chicago, and Armour House was one of them. Dave and I visited it and immediately knew that we wanted to get married there!

One of my favorite parts of wedding planning was finding my wedding dress, and it was such a special moment to share with my mom, Maid of Honor, cousin, and aunt. The dress was by Elizabeth Fillmore, from Belle Vie. It was made of French lace, with a low back and ruched detailing…both simple and intricate at the same time. The dress matched the European, vintage, romantic feel of Armour House and its gardens. The dress was also super comfortable and easy to maneuver in (it felt like wearing a nightgown), and I loved the lack of fussiness about it.

I tried to stay with the theme of ease/simple elegance that drew me to my wedding dress. Armour House has so much natural beauty between its stunning gardens and the amazing architecture and details of the interior of the house, so we kept our flowers, by Lake Forest Flowers, and table linens, by BBJ Linens, understated to complement, not compete with, the venue. We also prioritized music for both the ceremony and reception, handpicking all of the selections of both Wellington Strings Quartet and Kate Porter of Toast & Jam DJs.

One of my favorite moments was when Jacqui, my photographer, found a large white feather in the grass during our First Look pictures on the grounds of our venue. She lost her dad a few years ago, and she knew that I had also lost my dad. She told me that her mom has always told her that whenever she sees a white feather, it means her dad is near to her. Jacqui shared this as she handed me the white feather, and I couldn’t believe it! It was one of the most magical moments of my life. Just moments before the ceremony, Eileen from Lake Forest Flowers helped me add the feather to my bouquet, and it was so meaningful to carry the feather with me as I walked down the aisle. Another favorite moment was when Dave and I walked down the grand staircase at Armour House for our introduction at the reception. It was an amazing feeling to look out and see all the smiling, loving faces of all of our favorite people! It was a feeling I’ll never forget.

My biggest tip to future brides is to have someone besides you be in charge of keeping track of time when you and the bridesmaids are getting ready before the ceremony. It did not occur to me to delegate this task, but I wish I had! You’ll be happy to have one less thing on your plate, trusting that someone else can make sure you leave wherever you’re getting ready at the right time. Another little tidbit to pass on – it really will be okay if it rains on your wedding day! It started raining just a few minutes into my outdoor ceremony, and we had to move our 150 guests inside to a new location. It actually made the ceremony feel more exciting and interactive, and I got to walk up and down the aisle twice!

There’s no denying that Ashley and Chad planned one picture perfect party. Because if there’s one thing we know, it’s a pretty wedding and this stunning affair has got just that written all over it. [iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/188912817 600 338]

From Allison Kuhn PhotographyAshley and Chad were married July 23, 2016 in the beautiful Pippin Hill Farm and Vineyard. Their incredible floral design by Petals and Twigs incorporated lush greens and whites. The overall feel of their day was romantic vineyard wedding and it was a semi-formal wedding that included blush, gold and grey colors to compliment the soft and gorgeous venue. Chad was coaching Ashley’s younger brother’s baseball team. When Ashley came home from college, she went to the team’s end-of-the-year party. Chad knew Ashley’s family for years prior to the two of them meeting. Chad proposed on and eight day trip to San Francisco and Napa Valley, so a vineyard wedding only seemed fit. They have dog named Pickles and they are a fun couple! Chad is incredibly positive, funny and always finds the silver lining in any situation. Chad is from Upstate New York and Ashley is from Minnesota, but they reside in Richmond, VA.

Bright + Beautiful Santorini Summer Wedding

Bright and beautiful, from the dress to the shoes, and we haven’t even gotten to those views! From start to finish this destination celebration was a home run and Anna Routh, with assistance by Graham Terhune, captured it all. Santorini Glam Weddings led the charge in planning this pretty party and we’re grateful to have all these pics to soak up – head to our Vault for them all!

From Anna RouthAlexis and Mike journeyed to Santorini for a stunning destination wedding in June. The two, who met in Atlanta and traveled to Portland to start a life together, are those people who are so comfortable in their skin, genuinely happy to be together and the most fun to be around. Alexis is 75% Greek, so when planning the wedding she knew her guests would likely have to travel to be a part of the day (she’s from Florida and they live in Portland), so why not give them an excuse to really get away to somewhere special?

Santorini couldn’t have been a more perfect setting – the beautiful blue sea, the stunning calderas, and the white and blue everywhere was like a photographer’s dream. Alexis’s style is flawless – her dress is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever photographed, sexy yet sweet, her Jimmy Choo shoes were the picture of elegance, and her hair and make up came together to create a picture of the most stunning Greek goddess. Her vision for the reception with fresh florals and even some pieces hand-painted by the bride, was brought to life with the help of the wonderful Santorini Glam Wedding.

The weekend spent with these two in Santorini was such a blast and the perfect reflection of their style and their love.

Chic Wine Country Wedding With Pops of Pink

A wedding day in Sonoma means good food, flowing wine, and stunning vineyard views as far as the eye can see. Dana and Charles gave their guests that quintessential wine country experience and the result was the ultimate celebration anchored in Greek Orthodox tradition. Don’t miss a moment from the lens of Jesse Leake inside The Vault.

From Rebecca Johnson of Kristi Amoroso Special Events… Dana and Charles were excited to plan a wedding in Sonoma as this is one of their favorite places to come, spend time and enjoy great wine and food, on the weekends and they were excited to welcome many of their guests from the East Coast where they both grew up.

Finding the perfect venue was very important to them. They were looking for something unique, private, and modern. The Glass House was ideal as it is surrounded by the vineyards that were so important to the bride and groom, but also offered the highest level of sophistication and elegance. The groom’s Greek heritage was felt in their hosting of the ceremony at the beautiful Nativity of Christ, Greek Orthodox Church.

After a traditional Greek ceremony, guests were transported by shuttles, drinks in hand, to the reception venue in Sonoma. Actively involved with the florist, the bride added some sentimental touches such as a non-traditional guest book where guests signed rocks and put in a glass vase, family photos at the cocktail reception, a well thought out and designed back bar with uniquely displayed items and even a wine tasting bar with wines made from the surrounding vineyards. The cocktail reception also featured a wonderful raw bar and the guest house had a cheese charcuterie room, both were devoured by the guests.

Dinner was set around the pool with the Jazz vibe band, Ever Music group, playing in the background. As night fell and the vineyard’s rows were illuminated, the guests partied late into the night, snacking on late night savory bites, desserts and cake while the DJ spun party tunes until the last guests departed this amazing wedding event, fulfilled.

How to Add a Personalized Touch to Your Dream Nursery

From a London print that gives a nod to his British roots to adventure wallpaper inspired by his parents travels and all the special moments in between, Hudson’s nursery is the perfect example of beautifully designed and totally personalized. Plus it mixes neutrals and really cool prints like a boss. Tour the full space crafted by mom and designer, Jennifer Swadling of Amy + Jen, along with sweet photographs by AMBphoto.

We had dreamed for so long of becoming parents that when it became a reality I already had an idea of the look and feel of the room I wanted for our babe. Our little one’s gender was always going to be a surprise which made the design process that much more fun!

Our home is a fixer upper and not the lovely kind with gorgeous doorways and exposed brick, we are talking putrid green tones and essentially a lot of work. In saying all this I am a self described procrastinator and with two months to go I told my husband we had loads of time to get everything together.

My pregnancy however took a downturn and I was hospitalized with severe preeclampsia at 32 weeks. Bed rest, amazing chats (and cries) with my fellow warrior soon to be mommy’s was super helpful in pushing me to press purchase on all my outstanding’s (crib included). Creating a room from a hospital bed makes you realize how very wonderful the people you work with are.

In the end we lowered windows, added wainscoting, wallpapered, and gave the room a lovely and fresh coat of Benjamin Moore’s Dove White & Simply White Paint.

My incredible vendors were wonderful in keeping up to speed with facetime chats, texts & emails and even without me physically there they took the time to understand what I wanted and made it happen.

There are so many things I love about Hudson’s room and each and every piece is intentional. The London Rifle Paper Co Print is a salute to his British Heritage, the Safari Wallpaper speaks to adventure and is an ode to how my husband and I met in Australia on our very own adventures.

We have lots of stuffed animals in the hopes that his love for them will match mine. His rocking chair is Canadian made just like him. His room is bright and beautiful and it is most definitely our favorite in the house. It makes me smile each and every time I walk in. (well maybe not during the night feeds)

Classic NYC Wedding… With A Whimsical Twist

How do you pull off a classic city wedding… but with a unique whimsical twist? You hire an incredible team led by Ang Weddings and Events. Add in Nine Cakes and Face Time Beauty Concierge assisting with the details and Brian Hatton and McKenzie Miller Films capturing it all, you’re guaranteed a stylish success. And that’s exactly what we have right here – head to our Vault to see it all!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/168268027 600 338]

From the Bride and Groom… We first met in springtime in New York City, and we hoped to capture that feeling of lush beauty and budding excitement! We wanted to celebrate in the style of a classic, elegant New York wedding, but also retain the elements of our unique style – a little whimsical and cartoony.

Our planner, Tzo Ai of Ang Weddings and Events, knew how to help us blend those elements perfectly. We visited several venues in the city for our ceremony and reception, but knew almost immediately that the Four Seasons Hotel – with its curving row of bright, round awning lights, pillared central space, and enormous grid windows with twinkling candles in every pane – would combine our love for a retro New York vibe with a more modern, contemporary sleekness. Our floral design was in shades of pale pink, ivory, white, and hints of chartreuse, using cherry blossoms and peonies as the backdrop, but together with Tzo Ai and our wonderfully talented florist Sarah from Blossom and Branch, we incorporated bright pops of saturated pinks and corals to add a bit of unexpected color and fun. On our wedding day, we completely fell in love with the tall, lush arrangements that evoked a garden-like feel… reminding us of our first dates in Central Park!

To add a bit more of our own humor to the wedding, we created specially designed invitations from Lion in the Sun, incorporating our very own cartoon “bear and lion” motif, which I (Emily, the bride) like to sketch to represent us. We loved the contrast of the classic heavy, ivory letterpress with gold flowing script… and the funny “bear and lion” cartoon and bright pink edging. Likewise, we equally loved creating both our beautifully elegant (and so delicious!) gold-and-white cake from Nine Cakes decorated with what seemed like a billion tiny hand-made petaled flowers, as well as our “bear and lion riding in a yellow cab” cartoon that I drew just for our wedding and we had printed directly onto our favorite Eleni’s iced cookies. To tie everything together, we thought music would be key! Our band, Blair Reinhard Band, was simply phenomenal, weaving Sinatra and Top 40’s music in together to create a fun, vibrant atmosphere. When I picked my wedding dress, I also hoped to find something that would capture old-school glamour but with a bit of fun, and I found it in the custom, intricately beaded bodice and full ballgown skirt with an asymmetric gather and wide, ribbon-like panel of silk gazar train. Like our wedding, it was exactly what I had hoped for – classic, but with a little magic thrown in!

The best advice we can give is to stay true to your own personal sense of fun and style! We loved all the little details and extra whimsical touches that made our wedding feel so special to us. We agree that the best practical advice is to find a planner who both organizes and inspires you; if you have busy jobs and careers, a great planner will make all the difference!

An Azur + Coral Destination Wedding on the French Riviera

Settle in dear readers, because this celebration has got style and sophistication for days. From the colorful pink peonies to the regal azure blue gowns, it’s the South of France like you’ve never seen it before and Greg Finck has snapped it all to share. A day effortlessly orchestrated by Wanderlust Wedding for Sparkle Shine Events, we’ve got every charming bit waiting to bewilder you in The Vault!

From the Bride… Being a wedding planner, I knew exactly how I wanted our wedding to be: intimate, meaningful and beautiful. In order to create the wedding of our dreams, I chose a faraway destination, the French Riviera. For the venue, I found a stunning, Art Deco villa turned five-star, boutique hotel sitting directly on the Mediterranean Sea that F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in while he wrote Tender is The Night. With a location that had a mesmerizing background and historical significance, I chose to add many unique details to make our wedding truly unforgettable.

For the theme, I chose to compliment the surrounding Mediterranean Sea by utilizing shades of blue. From the custom, acrylic drink stirrers that spelled out “oui,” watercolor menus that also functioned as place cards, custom watercolor crest, miniature satchels filled with dried lavender to toss during the ceremony recessional, the Scotch and cigar bar, late night bites of mini burgers and pommes frites, my Monique Lhuillier dress, and the French wording on our invitations, each of these details (plus many more) paid tribute to our personalities, our hometown of Houston, Texas, and the destination.

Floral Hair Combs Are the New Bridesmaid Must Have

The florals in this upstate NY wedding have grabbed ahold of my attention and not let go. But it’s not the bouquets – though the bridal bouquet is OMG worthy – but the unique and oh so pretty floral hair combs that all of the bridesmaids wore instead of carrying bouquets. Genius, right? Elena Wolfe – with assistance by Colleen Macmillan – captured every look and more. Head to our Vault for it all!

From Elena WolfeCali and Phil had a beautiful and lush summer wedding full of blush, ivory, and greens. The ceremony overlooked the Hudson River and guests were seated next to rows of white lanterns and blush rose blooms. The bridesmaids had custom flower hair pieces to complement their blush gowns and the groomsmen looked handsome in charcoal suits. Everyone danced into the night with a fun live band finishing with a cake adorned by fresh flower buds and draping ivy.

From Earthy Elegance FloralsOur inspiration was drawn from the elegant location with rustic hints. We wanted the flower decor to feel different and unique while maintaining a tasteful appearance. The bridal bouquet was made up of blush pink and white peonies, garden roses, white sea holly, eucalyptus and ivy cascading down the side. Instead of having my bridesmaids hold bouquets, I decided to do something different and have them all wear floral hair combs made up of blush pink and white garden roses, white sea holly, spray roses and eucalyptus leaves.

We pulled a lot of the inspiration from the location including the gardens. We wanted the ceremony and cocktail hour space to have a romantic feel with lanterns decorated with eucalyptus and spray roses. We filled the reception space with candles, and half of our barn-style harvest tables were decorated with rectangular wood boxes filled with cylinder white candles and an arrangement of flowers made up of blush pink and white garden roses, stock, hydrangeas, spray roses, wax, eucalyptus and green ivy hung off the sides of the box. The other half of our tables were decorated with eucalyptus, spray roses and green ivy floral runners and candles down the center of the harvest tables.

What is your process for designing a space?

This question is critical to ask of a designer at the beginning of the vetting process to ensure expectations are set before the project begins. You might already have an idea of how the design process works, but can easily find yourself frustrated after the work begins simply because your expectations are not aligned with those of the designer. Posing this question at the start of the project will not only help to determine if the designer has a work style that will meld with yours, but it will also ensure that there is a transparent process and communication strategy that will yield a smooth process throughout.

Do you infuse any of your personal style into your designs and how do you work around this if it differs from your clients wants or needs?

Designers are known for their unique, individual styles, which are conveyed throughout each of their projects. It may be something as simple as the art they choose or as encompassing as the overall aesthetic. Ask the designer about the process they would use to get a feel for your style and how they will apply that knowledge to create a design that works for you. It’s important that you have an open and honest dialogue with constant feedback throughout the process. But be open to suggestions. This helps to produce an end result that is meaningful to you; one that reflects your own personal style with a touch of the unexpected that a designer can provide.

Who is your ideal client and why?

Whether or not they want to admit it, every designer has an ideal client. Asking this question will help you gauge if you will be a good fit for the designer. Many designers say their favorite client is one with an unlimited budget that will give them carte blanche to do whatever they want to do! And while this may be the perfect answer for you, others might not be willing to hand over the reigns. Learn who they prefer to work with and why. Then after you have your answer, really ask yourself if you could be a good fit.

How will the timeline be determined and carried out?

This is important as it sets a level of expectation on the front end. When going over the timeline, keep in mind designers have multiple clients and each project takes time to execute properly. Understand the timeline, but stay flexible. Not only does it take time for a designer to pull everything together, but other parties are often involved – manufacturers, electricians, plumbers, etc. – each with their own timeframes. As with everything in the design process, having an open line of communication and setting clear expectations ahead of time are critical to ensuring a smooth process.

Do you have a specific contract that details the terms of your payment for services rendered and each phase of my project?

All projects need to have a formal contract to govern the work and expectations of both parties during their time working together. Ask for a sample contract and payment schedule and protect yourself from the get-go. The designer will be spending your money for a project, so it is important to have this outlined in a legal contract. Additionally, the designer needs to ensure that they will be paid for time and work, too.

Do you have references I can contact?

References are a great way to learn about a designer while understanding their process and what they can deliver for your project. The best way to do this is to talk to a current or former client who has already gone through the process, so ask for a list of clients that are willing to be contacted. Most designers are happy to share references for their clients.

An Engineer Designed One Epic Proposal with 360 Lightbulbs

When Whitney’s engineer boyfriend Zach planned a “Will you marry me?” moment, he knew an ordinary proposal wouldn’t do. Instead, he worked to design a sign of 10-foot steel letters lit up with 360 lightbulbs. The install took 36 hours of work, but for Zach every second was worth the “yes” from Whitney. Jose Villa captured the result that’s officially brought us all to tears.

From the Bride-to-be, Whitney… Zach is an engineer and a creative mastermind. He told me that he knew he wanted to do something with lights to propose. His first idea was the hang 10ft letters off the side of the cliff, inside this cove on the coast. However, after many prototypes, the engineering wasn’t working, so he went on to version two: The Sign.

“Zach walked 60,000 steps in those

36 hours putting the sign together,

and installed all 360 lightbulbs by hand.”

He designed the entire sign (the exact size and font of the steels letters, the structure that held the letters, and all of the electrical engineering) on his own. At first he hoped to weld the letters himself, but as time was running out, he outsourced the welding to a local shop a few miles south. After the letters were complete, he took 36 hours to completely build and install the wires and electrical circuiting to actually get this sign to light up.Zach walked 60,000 steps in those 36 hours putting the sign together, and installed all 360 lightbulbs by hand.

The proposal happened on a Wednesday, so from the beginning, he totally threw me off. He told me he needed to go down to his parents’ house on Tuesday to meet with them about a few things, and that I should come down on Wednesday night for dinner. As I was driving down after work, he asked if I could stop and grab dinner (little did I know he was delaying me!), then as I got closer, he told me that he would meet me at the top of the driveway.

I got in the car and as we were driving down the road, he convinced me to go down to the beach even at 7:30pm. We casually walked about 500 steps, and then just as we turned the bend, BOOM, the sign! I froze. I literally didn’t think it was for me! Then, he got down on one knee and asked the big question.

Bonus: More Unique Proposal Ideas!

How To Be the Best At-Home Barista

For most of us, starting the day means having that oh-so-necessary cup of coffee in hand, stat. Wouldn’t it be nice if our local barista was in the kitchen waiting with said cup of jo? Well, that’s totally impossible (unless you’re dating or married to one), but the next best thing? Becoming the ultimate at-home barista. With the help of OXO, you can easily learn how to make the best-ever cup of coffee with these bean to brew steps.

Bean Selection

First things first, find your perfect bean. For the ultimate cup of coffee (and to be the ultimate at-home barista), you’re going to be grinding your own beans. But you might be wondering, where do I start? Think of beans to coffee like grapes to wine. Everything from the region and variety to the season and roast duration all play a part in the final flavor of your brew. Educate yourself on each of these factors and you’ll be equipped with the knowledge you need to select the beans that suit your palette.

Freshness Factor

Once you’ve made your bean selection—keep them fresh and happy. The journey to a flavorful cup of coffee includes bean storage and fighting their worst enemies: air, moisture, heat, and light. That’s where an OXO’s Coffee POP Container comes in handy. A unique one-touch push-button guarantees an airtight seal and ultimate freshness, while it’s UV-blocking technology battles light. Not to mention, they’re also stackable for those of us who have a little obsession with pantry organization.

The Grind

Now that you’ve got a way to keep your beans fresh until you’re ready, it’s time to learn the grind. Why not just buy your beans ground already? If you really want to be a kick-butt at-home barista, get your own grind on, folks. Coffee beans contain oils that, when ground release an aroma and can interact with moisture in the environment. Basically, the longer coffee grounds sit around, the less flavorful your cup of jo becomes.

Investing in a grinder like OXO’s Conical Burr Grinder brings you one step closer to the perfect brew every time. Its built-in scale allows it to grind by weight instead of time and gives you the ability to custom measure grounds to create your own coffee ratio, or to use precise, pre-set grams-to-cup ratios. So, whether your perfect cup means give me all the jitters OR I just need a little jumpstart to get going, this is your grinder.

A Tasty Temperature

Now that you’ve mastered the art of keeping your beans fresh and finding your perfect grind, it’s time to get your brew down to a science. It means combining brew time, water temperature and water volume in just the right way. Taking the guess work out of the process is easy with the OXO Barista Brain 9-Cup Coffee Maker, which brews at the optimal temperature for coffee as certified by the Specialty Coffee Association of America. The intelligent Barista Brain microprocessor monitors time, water volume and temperature from start to finish, giving you the precision of expertly hand-crafted coffee. In other words, you’ll feel like you just placed an order at your favorite local coffee shop.

Voila! You’re now armed with the steps to becoming the best at-home barista. Get ready for happier mornings, wowed guests and a coffee experience like no other.

Charming Vintage-Inspired Wedding In Chicago

When you meet “the one” while on a business trip, pretty amazing things happen. Just take Leslie and Euan who found one another when they were least expecting it, and later planned the wedding of their dreams. Incredible vendors like LOLA Event Productions, Brian Dorsey Studios, Toast and Jam, Nika Vaugha, and Robinson Press brought the day to life and it’s all waiting right here.

Leslie and Euan met in a way they were least expecting – through work! Leslie traveled to Canada for a business trip and unexpectedly met her husband-to-be.

After a quick introductory coffee, they both knew they wanted to see each other again. Their managers knew it too – calling them out when they were both blushing after being asked what they were doing that night. After a whirlwind few days together, they embarked on a long-distance relationship that was built to last.

When it came time to propose, Euan sweated through a day of mishaps before finally popping the question. The couple had traveled to Charleston for a weekend getaway, and Euan had it all planned out. Little did he know Leslie would spill an entire iced coffee all over her nicest shirt, almost discover the ring in his shorts pocket, and then announce how cute it was that her coworker got engaged at the very spot he planned to do it. Being an improviser, he brought her to a bench overlooking the water and pulled the ring out of his pocket at the perfect moment. “I was so surprised! I was almost confused because it happened so fast!” Leslie says. And of course she said yes.

Leslie and Euan both work in events, so they dove into planning without batting an eye. Overall, they knew they wanted it to feel intimate, personal and welcoming. This led them to choose the Ravenswood Event Center for their celebration – the space provided the perfect amount of intimacy and flair. They decorated the venue in a classic style with details brought in from the places that mean the most to them: Scotland, Toronto, New York, London and Chicago. They used vintage postcards as their table numbers, and hand wrote each guest a note thanking them for coming to their big day.

Their advice for couples planning a wedding? Choose the things that really matter to you and get them right, then don’t sweat the rest. It will all come together! Also, remember to slow down and enjoy your day as much as possible – it’s not often you have everyone you love in one place so take advantage of it!
