British Columbia Wedding by Jamie Delaine

This Canadian wedding by Jamie Delaine is the epitome of charming.   Maybe it’s the strawberry hues or the sweet bridesmaids’ dresses or the cute lovebird motif but I can’t help feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.  And, of course, DIY details tucked in each and every corner always puts a smile on my face!  More can be found in the full gallery!

Every detail of Rebecca + Adam’s day was perfectly planned.  Rebecca had stunning taste and it made my job so easy.  They had the best-lookin’ bridal party I’ve ever seen. I absolutely loved the bridesmaids’ J Crew dresses (been dying to shoot a wedding with J Crew dresses!) and the groomsmen’s tan suits.  Rebecca designed all of the florals herself.  The reception took place at the amazing Fraser River Lodge in Agassiz, BC.  I couldn’t get over how stunning everything was.  There must have been over two hundred mason jars throughout the lodge, with a single tealight in the bottom of each one.  So simple, so elegant.  The centerpieces and all the details were nothing short of perfect. Rebecca + Adam shared their first dance on the balcony of the Fraser River Lodge, overlooking snow-capped mountains.  The band was phenomenal, playing awesome music from the 60s like “you can’t hurry love” while guests danced under strawberry-coloured lanterns.

New Year’s Eve Wedding At Lake Louise ~ Orange Girl Photographs

New Year’s Eve, Ice Castles and Prince Charming! Just seems to go hand in hand!! Today’s beautiful bride fell in love with The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise when she was a little girl and dreamed of someday having her own fairytale nuptials there. Years later … voilá! A picture perfect celebration ~ from Kirstie Tweed of Orange Girl Photographs and Lynn Fletcher Weddings

From KirstieJulia and Matt chose to get married in a winter wonderland at Chateau Lake Louise in Canada. Their New Year’s Eve wedding week-end started with an outdoor ice bar. Despite freezing temperatures of -25 degrees celcius the ice bar was packed for the entire 3 hours. Julia and Matt braved the cold temperatures to take advantage of the huge ice castle out on the lake for photographs. Guests were treated to martini ice luges during dinner with an ice hockey skate for the boys and a high heel for the ladies. My favourite moment of the evening was during the couple’s first dance when it started to snow!

From Lynn Fletcher (their wedding designer) … Julia and her family took many Christmas trips to Lake Louise as she was growing up. When Julia was around 10 years old she saw a wedding being set up in the Victoria Ballroom at The Chateau Lake Louise with her Dad and Julia told her Dad then that when she got married she wanted it to be in that very room. Nothing made Julia’s dad Grant more proud than to be able to give his eldest daughter the wedding of her dreams just as she had predicted it years before. Julia and Matt chose to get married on December 31st as it was that date 3 years ago that Matt asked Julia out on their first official date.

I asked Julia and Matt what their favourite part of the wedding was ( I talked to them separately)…they BOTH said the walk down the aisle and the ceremony itself. Julia was surprised with her answer as she thought she would focus more on the decor and the pretty things she so carefully planned with me. Matt said that he took my advice to lock his eyes on Julia at the end of the aisle and not look away. It really helped him feel the depth of emotion and the magnitude of the moment. I was overjoyed with the answer as that is what I want to hear from every couple. After all, THAT is the reason they spend so much time, energy, and money on their day: to feel that feeling that they will never forget as long as they both shall live!

There are SO many more amazing shots from this epic celebration in the SMP Photo Gallery as well as on Kirstie’s blog and Lynn’s blog:

Rhode Island Wedding by Melissa Robotti Photography

I just want to wrap myself up in the ethereal feel of this Rhode Island wedding by Melissa Robotti Photography. The beiges, creamy whites, and soft pinks just speak to the elegant and chic part of my soul (and of course that is a good part).  It’s all that is wonderful about a classic Newport wedding, yet modern at the same time – which in my eyes makes it perfect. While I am going on and on about how much I love this wedding, you should check out the full gallery for even more images to fawn over.

While Ari and I love the excitement and exhilaration of living in NYC, we have visited and fallen in love with Newport, RI every year since we began dating 4 years ago.  The beauty and serenity of this historical sailing town just captured our hearts from the start.  Knowing that this was a special place to both of us, we decided to take a spontaneous visit on a hunt to find a perfect venue for our special day. When we arrived at Belle Mer, it felt like we stepped into a mélange of chic NYC elegance and serene Newport charm with stunning views overlooking both the Harbor and Narragansett Bay.  More importantly, it was large enough to host all of our family and friends who always love a good party!

The inspiration was a blend of vintage elegance and modern, romantic touches so as to surround ourselves and our guests in a warm, ethereal setting. Neutral colors of light beiges and creamy whites with highlights of soft pink helped to create the overall feel. There were amble amounts of candlelight– lanterns that flickered with subtle light during the ceremony, hundreds of tea lights throughout the room, and tall white pillar candles enhancing the beauty of the long staircase and cozy fireplace.  Creamy white and beige roses and fluffy hydrangeas centered the tables and highlighted the ceremony.  One of my favorite elements was an idea that our lovely event coordinator, Venessa put together at the last minute for us! With the cool ocean breeze that was chilling the air that day, we offered our guests hot cider and donuts as they arrived for the ceremony.  It was a wonderful addition to a chilly Fall day!

It was important to us to make certain elements of our day very personal: two of my brothers played their guitars and used their amazing voices to perform acoustics with specially selected songs during the reception, the mother of the groom wrote out beautiful gold calligraphy on all of the place cards, white cakes from our favorite NYC bake shop were brought in and our favorite candies were offered at a candy bar throughout the evening.  My late grandmother also had a meaningful presence in my special day.  I wore her favorite broach on my vintage fur shawl and the pearls from the veil she wore on her wedding day adorned my veil– all as a thoughtful gift from my mother. In lieu of favors, we made a donation to the American Cancer Society to honor of my beloved grandmother and all of our friends and family that have been affected by the disease.

The hours flew by before our eyes with our guests glued to the dance floor, to heartfelt and witty speeches, and an all around fantastic evening.  Our wedding was a story of the love we have for each other and being surrounded by our friends and family made it complete. It was truly unforgettable! Thank you to all of our vendors for making it so perfect!  Special thank you to Melissa Robotti and Kristen Teig of Melissa Robotti Photography for capturing the wonderful emotions and telling the story of the best day of our lives through photographs!

Vintage North Carolina Wedding Full of DIY

We are going to wrap this pretty parade up today with an adorable wedding shot by Ross Clodfelter of F5 Photography. In the bride’s words, it is a Vintage meets DIY meets Budget Friendly and in our words… it’s total PERFECTION. And the venue is beyond cool. It’s an old government building in Winston-Salem with a speakeasy vibe. Now that is a venue we can get behind. Don’t forget to stop by the gallery for more DIY details and all around awesomeness from North Carolina.

see the full wedding here!

We planned our wedding to be an experience for our guests infused with our own personalities. We wanted to create an event that was fun and memorable, but we also wanted the guests to feel like they were experiencing an evening that was uniquely us. And we didn’t want to spend ridiculous amounts of money to do it. Everything was very vintage and eclectic, the unifying element being our own personal tastes. I’m a Graphic Designer and Kent builds stained glass windows. We’re both artsy-craftsy people and we knew we wanted to incorporate as many DIY projects as we could into the day.

Our ceremony was held at a small park in the historical district that we both love. The park saved us money in a couple of ways. Grace Court Park doesn’t charge, but we made a small donation for upkeep. The park’s landscaping was beautiful on it’s own, so we didn’t need to purchase floral arrangements or any other décor. We had to rent chairs, but that was the only notable ceremony expense. The park also proved convenient because it’s located across the street from my regular salon. We were able to use the salon building – a beautiful old house – as a staging area just before and after the ceremony. (We all got dressed at the reception venue.)

We’re more practical than superstitious, and decided we would see each other before the wedding for photos. I’m glad we did. Although we’re both normally very independent, I had an uncharacteristic need to be with my fiancé. Kent felt the same way. (Not that it’s strange to want to be with your husband on your wedding day.) My brother’s wife got ordained and performed the ceremony. My sister-in-law has known me since I was a kid. There isn’t anyone I’d rather have married us. Sentiment aside, it saved money for her to marry us instead of a traditional minister. We wanted a handfasting and we wanted a ceremony that was meaningful for us, but not specifically religious. My sister-in-law crafted a beautiful ceremony from various sources (predominately Celtic, but also exerts from Gibran and Emily Dickenson and others). My nephew was ring-bearer, and my niece, a decided tomboy, was ribbon-bearer (carried the handfasting ribbons).

Our reception venue was the basement of an old government building (circa 1914) in our hometown of Winston-Salem. The space had an incredible underground speakeasy vibe. The basement was maze-like with a lot of different rooms. One side of the building had a set of rooms where we got ready. Guests entered the reception from the other side into a lounge area with a bar for cocktails. There was a corridor in which the photo booth and pool table were. The corridor connected the lounge to the main room. Dinner and dancing were in the main room, which was all brick and had jail cells with wooden doors along one wall.

Wisconsin Wedding by Heather Cook Elliott Photography

It’s easy to see why Heather of Heather Cook Elliott Photography was ready to trade her city condo for a country home after shooting this darling Wisconsin wedding. It could not be more charming! All the details were subtle yet substantial, and they had this country girl at heart all giddy from the minute I was able to take a peak at the drop-dead gorgeous images. It’s lakeside, it’s lovely and there is even more in the gallery.

From the lovely Heather Cook Elliot…Michele & Drew have followed their love across the country and back. When they first contacted me they were living in California and in many ways their wedding had a fresh California feel about it. Light suits, airy dresses, California jams and a reception on the edge of the water. They had dreams of marrying one another on Catalina island but ultimately, home and family and life deposited them close to Michele’s family home in Wisconsin’s lake country. So the water’s edge reception was on Lake Nagawicka and I helped them get some Wisconsin scenery into their photographs (who doesn’t love barns, anyway?) I met with Michele and her family-filled bridal party at that family home and experienced an immediate immersion into her life growing up. I came back to my city condo that night and said to my husband today’s wedding made me want to be part of a really big family, have 4 girls and move out to a lake!

Andrew prepared for the day at Delafield Hotel surrounded by a smaller but no less engaging family. When I met him there I could tell he was nervous, but once Michele walked down the aisle with her tearful father it was as if his nervous energy had been spirited away. For the rest of the day I could see him completely immersed in her presence, almost memorizing each moment together. The ceremony was flawless and emotional and held in a stone giant of a chapel that somehow manages to feel cozy and airy at the same time. After the ceremony we explored a local preserve and Michele and Andrew spent some time relaxing into the idea that they were now married.

The reception was held at classic Wisconsin supper club on the edge of the water. A tiny rain shower passed over the lake during dinner and left just as quickly as it had come. With the grass still wet Michele and Andrew took a quiet walk alone along the piers just before sunset; I imagine they talked about the sweet toasts and how lucky they are to have all these amazing people in their lives. Then, as the sun moved closer to the horizon the clouds gave way to one of the most brilliant sunsets I’ve ever seen. Tiki torches threw romantic beachy light onto guests taking their photographs in front of the sinking sun and the horns of the band grew in sound. Andrew is a good dancer and it was obvious good music was high on their priority list. The guests responded and a hilarious limbo caught everyone up in the fun. The night closed with a warming bonfire and the two of them dancing alone to an Al Green song. Just the two of them.

Washington State Wedding by Steven Moore Designs + Michele M. Waite

I imagine the guests at this Washington State wedding, photographed by the always amazing Michele M. Waite, felt like royalty amidst the elegant design of Steven Moore Designs.  I adore the tulle covered tables that make it seem like your dining on clouds!  The luxurious and classic theme continues throughout but Steven Moore kept things unpredictable with little twists like the pops of zebra print (which I love).  As always, the full gallery has even more inspiration to devour!

The best way to describe the style of this bride was simple, classic, understated elegance contrasted with minimal, surprising and unexpected pops of pattern and bling.  She was a bride who had distinctive taste and knew what she did and did not like.  She knew she wanted it lovely, sophisticated, detailed and high quality, but she also knew she didn’t want a lot of flowers, matchy-matchy details, abundant color nor any kind of unnecessary fluff.  My job as her designer was to take the boundaries she set, define her particular style and then come up with a concept that was highly styled and tailored yet as clean and simple as possible. below are the results.

Elena only liked a few kinds of flowers . . . peonies, ranunculus and gardenias.  the problem was, it was late August and both peonies and ranunculus were out of season.  it was basically a miracle when my flower wholesaler called me and told me she had located a small farm in Europe that somehow had a small crop of these flowers left.  My response: “I’ll take the whole farm.”  I had just enough to squeeze out the bride’s bouquets and a handful of centerpieces.

Elena wanted her wedding welcoming to children, and so she invited several of the kids closest to her to be part of her day.  I suggested putting them, along with all of the bridesmaids, in ivory dresses so the color of their dresses would not take away from the bride’s dress.  Everyone in ivory kept the look clean, simple and unexpected.

Although it was challenging to create a wedding that was both incredibly simple yet highly detailed, the results made it worth the hours and hours spent at the drawing board.  Because we decided to go light on the flowers, we needed to make sure every other detail played a more prominent role.  we created all of the tablecloths using thousands of yards of tulle that we cut, sewed and then layered and layered them on square tables to create a dark to light colored effect. we painted branches gold and glued little articles of bling to make them sparkle a bit more.  The centerpieces were simple and clean. minimal flowers in crystal vases, blocks of color piled high with pillar candles, crystal candle sticks with taper candles and very minimal accents of zebra print.  I created a lounge with custom pillows, popped the area with gold drapes, large mirrors, vintage tables and a zebra rug.  The cake echoed the tent’s decor with elements of sparkle and crystal paired with a zebra print pattern.

When they finally got engaged after 8 years of dating, Sarah and Matt decided that they wanted to celebrate their marriage with all their friends and family on the island of Maui. About five months into the wedding planning, it became clear how financially difficult it was going to be for their friends and family to make the trip out to Maui for their wedding. So they decided to scratch all their plans for a tropical destination wedding and go back to the drawing board.  When they found the Flying Caballos Ranch in San Luis Obispo, everything started to make sense and the wedding started falling into place.  San Luis Obispo is where Sarah and Matt met, fell in love, graduated from college, and lived for 5 years of their life together. Working on a really tight budget, they enlisted the help of their friends and family to make this wedding happen.

They decided to go with an eclectic, vintage, down-home theme and vibe for the wedding.  Sarah, dressed in her favorite color and she and Matt walked down the aisle together and were married by one of their best friends who got ordained to perform the ceremony. Matt’s best man designed and built the doorway they walked through to the ceremony (which featured metal cut-outs of their two Boxers), the alter they were married on, and the photo booth wall that was covered with wedding photos of their family and wedding party. The tables were labeled by street names that Sarah and Matt have lived at together and growing up. The table scape featured burlap runners made by Matt’s mom, an array of different china and silverware that they bought from thrift stores and swap meets, mason water jars, planted succulents holding the place cards, and array of beautiful yellow and red flowers. Instead of a cake, friends of Sarah & Matt contributed their dessert specialty to the Friends and Family Dessert Table, which was a huge hit! After their first dance to Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters” sung by on of their good friends, the band (also friends) started playing the “Ring of Fire” just as the bonfire started roaring.

The rest of the night was spent dancing the night away under the stars and celebrating with their closest friends and family. This wedding would not have been possible if it wasn’t for all of Sarah and Matt’s amazing friends and family who did whatever they could to make this day perfect for the bride and groom.

Temecula, California Wedding by Keri Doolittle Photography

It’s no secret we adore a good vineyard wedding – there is just so much to love about the intimate feel of a winery, not to mention the obvious appeal of delicious vino (I’m a big fan). But what makes me want to do cartwheels about this particular vineyard wedding by Keri Doolittle Photography is the couple’s modern approach the design of their day. The icing on the cake? The stunning florals from Pixies Petals that just seem to pop through the stunning photographs, and there is even more to toast to in the full gallery.

Rob and I were married at Wilson Creek Winery in Temecula, Ca. We wanted to have a smaller intimate wedding at an outside location. Throughout the six years we dated, we grew to love wine together and on a wine tasting trip we fell in love with the famous almond champagne at Wilson Creek Winery. Rob even took me to the Wilson Creek Winery restaurant, Creek Side Grill, the night we got engaged. It’s beautiful grounds, savory wines and delicious food made it a perfect venue for our special day.

Our theme for the wedding was a classic modern look. Because it was a fall wedding we didn’t want anything too bright or pastel so we chose a deep magenta as the main color and used black and silver as accents to make it pop. As a planner by trade I was very specific about how I wanted everything to look so our favors, chair numbers, name cards, menus, programs, etc. were all DIY. We even had a friend graphic designer create our own unique “logo” to use on our invitations and throughout our materials. The flowers were what tied everything together and, other than our photos, were my favorite thing about the wedding.

For the ceremony we had originally planned to do it on one of their outside stages with the fields of vines behind us, but even in Southern California you have to have a plan B for rain, which we didn’t. Luckily, the winery has a beautiful spiral staircase coming down from the bridal suite and we turned their foyer into our new ceremony location. Some of our guests were able to watch from above and it felt great to have everyone’s love and support surrounding us from all angles.  Our cocktail hour took place in the Cask Room which lead right into the Barrel room where we had a candle lit family style reception. The day turned out to be absolutely perfect and I truly could not have asked for anything more.

From Fab.you.lous Events…  Amma and Drew are both very creative people with great style and eyes for design which was evident in their choice of ceremony and reception venues. They chose the Bigelow Chapel for it’s obvious beauty and incredible architectural design as well as the famed Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, Minnesota for their reception. They wanted the feel to reflect them: casual, artistic, all the while incorporating their Ghanaian ancestry. They both loved the color palette of a bright yellow and leafy greens against varying shades of gray and crisp, clean whites. The structure of the satin folds at the bust and the soft ruching at the waist of Amma’s dress created a beautiful silhouette that complimented every aspect of the detail she had chosen in the architecture of the venues. Her yellow shoes were the perfect pop to accessories Already a beautiful person, she was obviously a stunning bride. The guys wore light grey suits with yellow ties and coordinating grey Chuck Taylors. Drew wore a boutonniere of freesia and bear grass. The ladies wore pewter bridesmaid dresses in the style of their choosing and carried bouquets of freesia, pincushion protea, billy balls, and tea leaves. Amma’s mother wore a traditional Ghanaian gown and both Amma and Drew’s fathers wore traditional handmade outfits from colorful kente cloth. Later, Amma and Drew would both change into their own custom made outfits to enjoy the rest of their reception in style.

There are really no words to describe the feeling that filled the air in the chapel as Amma’s brother played traditional Ghanaian music for the processional. When Amma and her father turned the corner to walk down the aisle there was a palpable excitement fueled by the acoustics of the drumming as everyone stood to honor the bride and her father. During the ceremony a family friend performed a traditional African libation ceremony of saying prayers then pouring water into a bowl and calling the names of relatives that had preceded them in death. This tradition is a way to summon the spirits of those that could not be with the couple at their wedding. They also performed a sand mixing ceremony. At the end, after a highly anticipated newlywed kiss, everyone applauded as they jumped a very modern version of a broom. One thing Amma really wished for was a vintage car to make their getaway. Drew told her throughout the planning process that it was too expensive and unnecessary. Drew emailed me letting me know of his plans to surprise Amma with the Rolls Royce and as you can see by the pictures, she was shocked and so happy. I’m not sure who was happier: Drew for pulling off a surprise that moved Amma to tears, or Amma for having such a thoughtful husband and a great way to escape as newlyweds.

The decor for the reception was simple, fresh, and let the color do all the talking in an already unique space. For half the centerpieces we put lemons in tall vases to help make the color pop against the crisp white linens and had sprays of yellow oncidium orchids to draw the attention upward. For the other half of the centerpieces, we wrapped banana leaves in the bottom of vases and placed the bridesmaid bouquets at the center of the tables. At each guests seat, they were greeted by handmade soaps wrapped in handmade papers with different colors and designs. We sprinkled freesia on some of the food tables to add pops of color as well as used pincushion protea on the guestbook table, escort card table, and head table. The guests dined on an Asian inspired buffet of spring rolls, noodle dishes, pot stickers, meats, and salads and enjoyed the scenery of the art museum. Some of the most memorable moments of the evening were the toasts given by the bride’s parents. At one point Amma’s mother, who had forgotten her reading glasses, began struggling to read her toast. Amma’s dad kindly lent her his own glasses and the room burst into laughter. There were many tears as family and friends recalled memories of their time with each of them individually and Amma and Drew glowed when spoken of as a couple. The first dances were followed by the major surprise of the evening: an african dance troupe. The group performed the highest energy dancing and drumming that kicked the rest of the reception off with excitement and left their guests with something to remember as everyone was invited on the floor to dance with the drums and rattles.

Weddings by JDK ~ A Surprise Pennsylvania Wedding

The logistics of planning a wedding are ~ to say the least ~ daunting. Who, what, when, where. All the input from loving and well-meaning family and friends. At times, it seems that the best thing to do would be to throw your hands in the air and elope! But this couple, did one better. They turned their engagement party into a surprise wedding. Their talented team of vendors all pitched in and made it into the happiest occasion possible!

Cydney & Matt’s Surprise Wedding

What made us want a surprise wedding?? Well, Matt and I both have huge families. Both of our sets of parents are divorced. His are both remarried and I am very close with my biological father’s side of the family. When we got engaged, (and even before that) there was a lot of input from everyone as to how we should go about things. And we were pretty torn about it. We both love St. Thomas and visit annually so we were hoping to get married there on the beach. But we knew that not everyone in our families would be able to make it. We went back and forth with the idea until it became evident that we were not going to be able to go to St. Thomas for the wedding.

Back in May, my mother had decided that she wanted to throw me and Matt an engagement party and together with my father, we decided on June 27th, 2010. My dad suggested that date because my grandparents were having a garden tour through the Hershey Garden Club that Saturday so everything would be in pristine condition for the engagement party. Not to mention that the following day would be my Grandparents 52nd anniversary. We went ahead with planning for the engagement party.

Memorial Day weekend, Matt and I were at my dad’s house and he asked how wedding plans were going. I shrugged and mentioned how I had heard about this one celebrity doing a surprise wedding and how cool it was but I didn’t think we would be able to pull it off. There were too many logistics to work out. My dad pointed out that all of the people from out of town were already going to be at the engagement party so why don’t we just turn it into a wedding? Everything was already planned… Why not?! So Matt and I left my dad’s house talking about how cool it would be, how it would totally surprise all of our guests and how people would be talking about it forever! So I now had 27 days to turn an engagement party into a wedding!

Within three days, I had made calls to all of the vendors: Diana Buck at Weddings by JDK who was going to help me with the catering, bouquet, cake and of course, the surprise, Dave Williams at CinemaCake to do the videography and Elaine Gates of Elaine Gates Photography to do the wedding photos. At the recommendation of Diana, I made a call to Reverend Sharon Marquart and asked her to officiate. I don’t know if it was the fact that it was a Sunday or if it was destiny but everyone that I called to help with my surprise was available!

The next step was to go to David’s Bridal and try on a few dresses. I had seen my Galina strapless taffeta gown on their website, but had sort of written it off thinking it wouldn’t look very flattering on me. My salesperson put it on me and it was a done deal. I had wanted something short and white and simple and I found in after trying on three dresses. I found the shoes before the dress was even a thought. I had seen them on Zappos.com, and knew they were perfect because they were hot pink (my favorite color). When I clicked on them and saw that they were a brand called “Romantic Soles” and had adorable red hearts on the bottom of the soles I was sold. They could not have been more perfect for me or for our day! I already knew that I wanted the wedding colors to be tiffany blue and hot pink and the shoes fit right in.

Hair and makeup were done by Downstreet Salon of Hershey. Jessica Larsh did my hair and has been a close family friend for years. She did an amazing job and even opened up the salon on a Sunday for me. My makeup was done by Olivia Olsen who is also from Downstreet Salon. She did a great job, my makeup lasted all day!

The cake was from Dingeldin’s in New Cumberland. I left a lot up to Diana at Weddings by JDK on this one. I told her I wanted butter-cream frosting, white cake, and white icing. She suggested the strawberry filling and I’m glad she did because it was amazing! Everyone commented for weeks on how good the cake was.

Grant and I have been dating…FOR 10 Years!  Our ‘match’ was a surprise set-up by a mutual friend.  It still took 9 months for us to start dating after that initial meeting, but 10 years later we are married.  We live in Toronto, Ontario, and in October 2009, we were visiting family in Nova Scotia.  We were strolling our favourite beach on Halloween day, and it was a sunny, cold, and windy typical Nova Scotia fall day, when Grant bent down on scooped a black rock and a handful of white sand from the beach, and asked me to marry him. I said YES immediately and we both sort of stumbled around in disbelief for the rest of the day.

We both knew we wanted a short engagement, and we wanted to get married near the ocean in Nova Scotia.  We set the date for June 26th.  Over the next two visits to the East Coast, we found a perfect property with 3 acres, direct ocean front for the wedding and reception site.  The property was located in a small village on the South Shore of the province, and had a small barn on site, and with a tent attached to it, we knew right away that it would be the perfect setting for our intimate gathering.   As we were planning a ‘destination’ wedding, we wanted our guests to be treated to the full East Coast experience, so we planned 3 days of activities, complete with a welcome atlantic Surf afternoon, a Friday night BBQ, the wedding on Saturday, and a mid-day farewell Tea on Sunday.

Grant is passionate about motorcycling, and I about surfing.  We combined the two passions and planned a surf day to welcome our guests, and rented all the local surf shop’s boards and wetsuits for the afternoon.  My wedding present from Grant was a custom designed surf board with the words “i promise” painted on the back of the board, with a drawing of my favourite flower, magnolias.  He visited the board shaper and signed the words himself.  I usually surf on the Great Lakes, so surfing in the Atlantic is always a treat.  Grant secretly asked my Dad to make a roof rack for the top of our truck to transport the gift from Ontario to the East Coast.  My wedding present to Grant was a custom designed wool blanket, made by a good friend, Julie Moschenross, with a map of the Great Lakes on one side and a map of Kingsburg on the other.

We sourced as much local material as possible for the wedding, including mostly local flowers (from family gardens), local lobster, oysters, famous Lunenburg sausage and a late night clam chowder.  We asked a local fiddler and her band to play for us and create a true East Coast ‘kitchen party’.

Grant designed our wedding invitations and created a ‘2 wave’ logo that was also painted onto my surf board, and to soften the drawing of the Atlantic black waves, we added some pink to our colour scheme.  My mom and sister hand-dyed over 4,000 coffee filters, dried them, sewed them together and flat packed them for travel, then re-poofed them on site, ready for hanging.

The wedding day was cool, with overcast skies, that eventually gave way to let the sun shine in 15 min after our ‘I DO’s’.  The fiddle music and food was perfect and we had heaters in the tent to keep us warm.  We danced and celebrated until the early morning, and had a guest appearance from a local Piper!  My most memorable time of the day was the time spent before the wedding in our 2 hour photo shoot with Grant, my sister and the his Best Man.  It was a wonderful ‘quiet’ time to relax before the wedding and capture the beautiful setting and wonderful ocean smells.

Keith and Janine are two fun-loving teachers from Los Gatos and Palo Alto, CA, who met on Match.com and clicked instantly over their witty sense of humors, sexy charm, and love for life. Their fresh, bright summer wedding was held at Clos La Chance, a gorgeous winery tucked back into the San Jose countryside surrounded by the golden hills of Northern California wine country, and with the help of Kren Rasmussen of Bloomsters, Joanna Biondi at Cafe Primavera, and Little Black Book Member Bonnie Harper of One World Designs, they were able to incorporate their upbeat personalities and meaningful details into the decor of the day. In fact, Bonnie Harper’s jewelry design played a significant role in the wedding day. Between Bonnie and Janine, they custom designed a number of jewelry pieces to complete Janine’s wedding day look, and they even blended one of her grandmother’s strands of pearls into her custom necklace, a detail that held special meaning to the family since her grandmother had just recently passed away.

New York City Rooftop Wedding by KT Merry Photography

New York City plays host to some of the most drop-dead gorgeous weddings we come across and when those weddings are held on the rooftop of the Gramercy Park Hotel, lets just say it is a full on swoonfest up in here. There is something about a gorgeous New York City wedding that makes everyone’s heart do a little flip. Perhaps it’s the timeless feel of the city, the excitement that floats through the New York air, or the facts that it is the fashion capital and simply romantic. Pola and Oliver, both originally from Germany, fell for New York’s charm many years ago.

Their ceremony took place at the architecturally grand St. Paul’s chapel of Columbia University and featured a gospel choir that sang from the chapel’s balcony. After an exit with cheering family and friends the couple chose a NYC Taxi Cab to drive them from their ceremony to the Gramercy Park Hotel, which can only be described as True Blood meets European flair. The exclusive venue played host to their rooftop terrace reception and cocktail hour 16 floors above the city boosting amazing views. The cocktail hour was chic romantic with the amazing Bon Musique singing in French under hundreds of light bulbs. Pola and Oliver shared an intimate dinner with their guests and enjoyed speeches in English and German before dancing the night away under the stars and enjoying cupcakes from Crumbs Bake Shop. The entire affair was elegant and so perfectly New York.

From Justin of Justin DeMutiis Photography...With a “found again” love for film, I set out on a mission to shoot beautiful things. I chose one of my favorite locations; Selby Gardens, located in Sarasota Florida. This gorgeous venue lends itself to it’s beautiful gardens which was the primary reason for a “French Garden” inspired shoot. Along with a few members of my team, we set out to find items that would make my vision come to life. I decided the shoot needed to be in the winter; therefor, a warm and cosy theme fit the bill. Nothing says warm and cosy like tea and honey. It was a no brainer, an outdoor tea party featuring beautifully packed honey jars as wedding favors was the only way to go.

With a growing trend in French inspired DIY weddings we needed to do something to set my work apart from the others. I am passionate about the environment and strive to incorporate recycled, and reused items in my business as much as possible. If we were going to feature “honey” favors, the environmental message had to be “Save the Bees”.A custom designed, engraved sign adorned with our message in french (“Sauver les Abeilles”) was hung in the gazebo. To further encourage the message, lavender seed packets along with a message from the bride and groom were placed in handmade envelopes and doubled as place settings. A matching handmade guestbook added to the decor.

Beautiful bouquets of lavender, sweet pea, and peonies, (just to mention a few) adorned the table in makeshift jars-turned vases along with tea cups acquired from a quaint little antique store located near my hometown in Brooksville, Florida.I felt this shoot incorporated so many things I love: film photography, outdoor weddings, nature, saving the environment, and all things vintage or handmade. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Colorado Wedding by Brinton Studios

Good morning!  Some of you may be waking up to fresh snow on the ground but we have loads of lovely wedding inspiration to brighten up your day!   I’m surprised our first wedding didn’t melt the Colorado snow with all the warmth and love that is obvious from the photography by Brinton Studios.  I love the romantic berry tones paired with the woodsy elements all of which complete this cozy, rustic, winter wonderland.  This DIY bride, after teaching herself how to sew napkins, make jam and paint parasols, definitely learned how much work is involved in a handmade wedding but also how rewarding it can all be.  There are more romantic, rustic details in the full wedding gallery!

Click here for more inspiration in the full wedding gallery!

My wedding could only be described as one word – magical.  My fiance and I live in south Texas, where winters hardly ever bring snow, but we are both originally from up north.  We both love the mountains and decided that a destination wedding in Colorado would be perfect for us.  During a scouting trip, we found Devil’s Thumb Ranch.  Not only was it breathtakingly beautiful, it also provided for the perfect intimate wedding.

After finding the perfect location, I started to research vendors in the area who could make my dream wedding come to life.  As a long distance bride, I knew I would be headed for an uphill battle.  I spent countless hours reading online reviews, interviewing prospective vendors, and finally deciding on a team could create the perfect day.  I knew that I was limited on how much I could bring in because of travel, but I wanted to add special touches throughout the wedding and reception.  I started reading wedding blogs.  Inspiration was everywhere!  But then the realization came, that all those little details that I loved so much added up to large sums.  I found creative ways to incorporate details into our wedding.  I taught myself how to paint parasols, make jam, sew napkins, and make an endless amount of paper products, including all signage and our programs.

I think the attention to detail made our wedding so special.  When are guests arrived they were greeted with out of town bags that were filled with items to help make their stay a little more comfortable.  Our escort cards were slices of birch wood, placed in a vintage crate filled with moss.  When my original idea for place cards failed, I turned my homemade napkins into the place cards at the last minute.  We rolled them and tied off with twine and a name tag.  My family has made homemade jam for as long as I can remember, but I had never made it myself.  When I decided to hand out jars of jam for wedding favors, I didn’t know how much work it was going to be. I went to an organic farm during the spring and picked the strawberries when
there were in season.  I dyed the tags with coffee to give them a vintage look and topped of each one with a fabric swatch.  The table squares at the reception were a last minute touch that my mom whipped up the week before. I didn’t want to overwhelm the space with too many details so I went with a romantic palette of pinks, burgundy, and green for flowers and decor.  The result ended up being a beautifully rustic, mountain wedding.

The days leading up to our wedding were warm (at least for Winter Park) and clear, but it started snowing right after our rehearsal dinner.  Although a little problematic for those making the trip, it created a “Winter Wonderland.”  Our dream was to have a snowy wedding and we got every bit of it.  The lesson that story is be careful what you wish for!

Southern California Wedding by Tec Petaja

And if you haven’t got your fill of whimsy for the day then you are in for a treat!  We also have a crazy beautiful film by Cana Video Production that captures this oh-so perfect Southern California wedding in all its glory!

From the beginning I just wanted the wedding to be a representation of Noah and I. All of the things we love and the people we love in one amazing celebration. Leo Carrillo Ranch absolutely inspired a lot of the choices, colors, decorations etc. we eventually made. The natural beauty of the ranch, the peacocks, the open and organic feel to all of it was so perfect. I guess you could say our theme was vintage-country-mismatched-colorful-chic. That’s a lot of theme, I know. Wedding colors just weren’t something we were able to settle on so we went with tones, bright tones.  Throughout the planning process, I was so nervous that all of the different colors would be too much, but on the big day I was so so excited about the outcome! Combining colorful tones with the simple beauty of the ranch, the old cream and turquoise colored buildings and hints of ivory and white turned out to be exactly what I had pictured all along.

Our wedding was also a huge collection of DIY projects and efforts. For instance, I collected 200+ pieces of mismatched china in both dinner and dessert plate sizes as well as 200+ floral vessels and 200+ pieces of mismatched flatware. I also collected probably 40+ old silver platters to use for the dessert and catering areas. I went almost once a week to the local thrift store. It was a serious labor of love. Some of our projects included a colorful ribbon bunting that hung down the center of the aisle and around the bar area. Guests were guided down the path to the ceremony and reception by hanging lace, hay-bails and home-made planters constructed from old buckets and watering pails. There was handmade arrow-signage created from re-claimed wood all over the reception area and guests were finally led to their seats from assignment cards typed on shipping tags that hung from old nails which were nailed into an old door and window frame I found at a swap meet. Our invites were screen-printed on vintage hankies found on ebay and our RSVP cards were handwritten on vintage postcards.  I spent an entire day putting together our program fans with family using scalloped scissors, tongue depressors and a hot glue gun. Our favors were homemade jams in tiny quilted jars and friends and family were also given small muslin bags filled with lavender to toss at us as we came down the aisle or when we left in our 1930s getaway car.

The day I got to marry Noah was everything I had hoped and more. It wasn’t just the beautiful setting or seeing everything come together exactly as I had pictured, it was the love and people that surrounded us that I will never forget.  Our friends and family absolutely made our wedding everything that it turned out to be. On our wedding day and in the months following people mentioned to us all of the time how much they loved our wedding, how it was beautiful and “so us” and fun and so on, but the best thing that people told us and continue to tell us is that the love they could see between us and all of the people there was so extremely evident. That love, I feel, is what made our wedding day.
