Cypress Grove Estate House Wedding by Kt Crabb Photography

There’s nothing quite like a fabulous soiree to put a smile on your face… and today’s stunning affair by Kt Crabb Photography will leave you grinning from ear to ear for the rest of your Wednesday.  Set on the lawn of the gorgeous Cypress Grove Estate House, this classic fête is overflowing with charming French-inspired details and vibrant pink hues.  Not to mention one very stunning bride in one very fabulous gown… with sleeves.  Swoon.  I think it’s definitely time for that morning coffee break.  Join me in the gallery for more!

From Kt Crabb Photography “She… they… they have just waited so long for this day to arrive. It’s finally here!” Carly’s mother said with a glimmer of a tear in her eye.  She sat watching her daughter fix the finishing touches to her dress. “Sigh, it’s here.” She said one more time. Carly and Paul have waited for this day for quite some time. They didn’t actually know each other until God orchestrated their meeting. “The timing was just perfect and when you know… you just know they’re the one.” Carly explained with a smile on her face during their engagement session.

The day prior, it poured. Absolute cats and dogs. Regardless of sunshine or not, this outdoor, classic French inspired wedding would still happen. They would still get married. As I met up with Carly and her bridesmaids that morning, the sun decided to show itself along with the brilliant blue sky. What a beautiful day it turned out to be.

Urban Southwestern Inspiration Session by Ang Weddings and Events + Blush Designs

We see so much incredible inspiration on a daily basis and I am always blown away by the talent and imagination that every vendor brings to the table.  The creative juices were definitely flowing for Ang Weddings and Events and Blush Designs during their urban photo shoot with a southwestern edge.  I love the structural succulent centerpieces and bouquets against an edgy, industrial backdrop.  Geometric paper goods brings a fresh and modern shimmer to the look and I especially love the bold bling for each guest to don for the event.  There are so many steal-worthy and unique details that you won’t want to miss.  See them all in the full gallery!

From Ang Weddings and EventsFortune Favors the Brave’s jewelry collection is inspired by a rugged Americana and Western sensibility mixed with a touch of 1970s-era glamour.  The jewelry represents a bold and modern reinterpretation of these classic themes, amped up with contemporary proportions for a wearable take on storied, ethereal metalworking techniques.  We found this modern tribute to the southwest as the inspiration for our bridal shoot.  We came across Agave Restaurant in NYC’s West Village- smooth adobe walls, cow skulls, with a bar beneath a wooden beam ceiling – and knew we had found the perfect urban southwestern venue.

In celebration of same-sex marriage becoming legal in the state of New York this year, we decided to use a bride and a bride for our shoot.  Abbey (an artist) and Perkins (a writer) are a real couple, which is so evident in the chemistry they had on camera.  Fortune Favors the Brave provided the jewelry and styled the two brides. Perkins wore an Equipment blouse, vintage blazer and skinny pants from Isabel Marant. Gabriella New York Bridal Salon provided two dresses for Abbey.  For the wedding, Abbey wore Amy Kuschel’s Valencia – a gorgeous dress with architectural layering, rose garden lace, and pleated netting.  A sheer V neckline provided a delicate frame to the bold jewelry she wore. For the after party, Abbey slipped into a short sexy beaded fringe dress by Allison Parris with snakeskin booties by Loeffler Randall.

Make Merry used the jewelry as inspiration for the paper goods, incorporating many of the geometric designs into the invitation, escort cards, place cards and menus.  A deep gold liner was used for the invitation envelope and a silver liner for the response envelope.  A bronze cord tied the escort cards to a tall cactus at the restaurant entrance.  The tables were named for succulents – Blue Aloe and Dessert Rose. Blush Designs created a modern southwestern centerpiece in Agave’s private dining room. Succulents and various cactus plants with pops of red nested in black sand created a low runner down the table. Blush Designs custom draped the table with a light grey chevron fabric with coordinating napkins. A dark brown leather cord tied the menu and napkin together.

Abbey held a modern and romantic bouquet of Chocolate Cosmos, black Calla Lilies, and Succulents. The delicate petals of the Chocolate Cosmos softened the hard geometry of the Succulents and Callas. Perkins wore a boutonniere of a mini black Calla Lily and Succulent.

The cake was simple and elegant, again using the jewelry design as inspiration for the geometric patterns on both tiers, with green sugar succulents as a bright accent. The signature drink was a Smokin’ Hot Margarita – Jalapeno infused tequila, triple sec, fresh lime juice and jalapenos.

The jewelry bar was set at Agave’s bar area, near the entrance of the restaurant. Guests were welcome to enjoy their drinks while adorning themselves with pieces from Fortune Favors the Brave’s collection. The jewelry was showcased on top of black sand in glass vessels, incorporating the jewelry into a landscape of succulents and cactus.

From the Bride… Our goal for our wedding was that we would honor God, our families and each other. We wanted the wedding to be relaxing and fun without being too formal. We loved the rustic, vintage feel and thought it complimented our vision for the wedding beautifully. Our favorite aspects of the wedding were the guest quilt, family heirlooms from jewelry to antique decor, and of course the photography!

San Dimas Engagement Session from Punam Bean Photographer

Engagement sessions are so exciting. It’s presumably one of the first times you and your newly betrothed step in front of a camera under the sole pretense of capturing your love. You can go so many different ways with it. You can be a bit braver than you would think to be with your wedding, or you can do something that celebrates the every day, your extraordinary, ordinary life. And I am such a fan of both, but today we have a sesh from Punam Bean Photography that has me convinced that the latter is the only way to go. Punam Bean was able to capture the pure essence of this couple beautifully. It’s one of my new favorite engagement sessions ever. Click here to see the rest of these two cuties jaunting around the woods!

These two met working on a movie set in the Bronx. Andy was the lead and Ashley was an extra. The scene was  a house party gone wrong where a fight breaks out and eventually gun shots are fired, not the most romantic place you’d think to find love.

From the groom … I remember Ashley sitting in the waiting room where all the extras were holding, I was smitten from the moment I laid eyes upon her. She was breathtaking. I remember trying to find an excuse to go and talk to her but I was so shy, and instead lived vicariously through the other boys who made their attempts.

At some point the director comes up to me and says, “Hey, in the next scene I need you to be flirting with a girl at this party, so go and pick out one of the extras.” I jumped, like a little boy, I jumped. It’s hard to explain love at first sight without sounding banal in describing feelings but, it was very much that, love at first sight. I quickly picked Ashley from the crowd and before you know it we were pulled tight together and whispering. At first there were nerves abound but, as we flirted, she let me know that she was just as nervous as I was and that put us at ease.

I came to find out that she was a very down to earth girl from Texas, and I being a California boy, we found it easy to talk about a longing for home. A day after the shoot, Ash and I walked all over the city together, we mused about everything. I think we walked 151 city blocks but no one was counting. At one point on our long walk Ash and I found an old bench in the middle of Central Park tucked away in a wooded area off the beaten path. She and I sat facing each other eye to eye and I told her, “I think I’m going to marry you one day.” I can’t explain the human heart. I can’t explain leaps and certainty. I just somehow knew she was ‘the one’ and no explanation was needed. We would go on to have a three month long distance relationship and eventually she made the move out to Los Angeles. Four years later, we are getting married.

Before I proposed to Ashley, I had composed an elaborate plan to fly back to New York and propose to her on that bench we found in Central Park. I found it fitting considering it had been a symbol of our romantic beginnings but, my impatience failed me. After I had found the ring I couldn’t contain the secret. One night, Ashley and I were in the kitchen making dinner, Italian wedding soup to be exact. We were having a laugh as usual. She looked divine. I was gushing with anticipation, especially after having asked her father’s permission for his daughter’s hand. My heart raced, it could have been the “Holiday Punch” but, I could no longer hold out. I grabbed her and I told her, “I’m going to ruin something and you can’t be mad at me. This isn’t what I had planned.” I got down on not one, but two knees and begged her to marry me. She said yes, and for the first time I really knew what real love was. I had known we we were in love but, at that point, our love was real.

Our wedding is going to be like the last day of summer camp meets an open bar. We’re getting married on the Yacht Eternity that journeys through Newport Harbor at sunset. It will be simple. It will be elegant. And there will be lots of dancing.

Spokane Wedding by Brooke Boling Photography

Oh, rustic glam.  Two words that I always love to hear together.  For this country boy and this sparkle-loving gal, that was the ideal vibe for their beautiful barn bash.  All the details they created from the chalkboard painted mason jars to the mercury glass centerpieces perfectly bring their theme to life and the results are exquisite.  Lucky for this couple, the bride’s cousin happens to be an incredible photographer, Brooke Boling Photography, and she captured all the lovely details.  See all the pretty in the full gallery!

From the Bride…Our wedding day was everything I could dream of, it was perfect. We had the most amazing family and friends who helped us make our dream day come true! Dan proposed to me in the end of February, and me being the crazy girl that I am decided we could plan a wedding by September! It definitely can be done and was all worth it but at times it was a bit stressful to say the least. To make things even more difficult, Dan and I live in Denver but wanted our wedding in our hometown, Spokane, WA. But mom to the rescue! My mom was able to tour venues for me, meet with Tana Rekofke, our caterer, gather vases, mason jars, and just about everything we had at the wedding was collected by her!

We decided to go with On River’s Edge, a barn north of Spokane because instantly when touring the site we all saw the vision, Rustic Elegance. Dan and I love the outdoors; he is a little country and I love everything sparkly, so it seemed like a match made in heaven. We had to bring just about everything in to make it unique and Dan even wired and hung the chandeliers himself. The wedding was very DIY, and we made the burlap table runners, Dan’s mom put the chalkboard contact paper on ALL of the mason jars, my aunts put together all of the centerpieces, other aunts made the mini-pies (because Dan loves pie), family friends made the signs, and everyone really came together to pull off this event. We could not have been more fortunate to have so many people that love us help with this special time.

My friend and bridesmaid, Andrea Leslie, happens to be a wedding planner and from the second she landed in Spokane, she was our go to girl! She helped set-up, ran the rehearsal, and made sure the day-of went smoothly, talk about a God-send! Another amazing detail was our amazing photographer, Brooke Boling from Nashville, who happens to be my cousin. She brought her second shooter, Kelli Trontel, and the two of them were able to capture all of our amazing moments that we will cherish for the rest of our lives. I felt so much love on our wedding day and it will be a day I will never forget, and although doing everything ourselves was a lot more work, I think it made it all the more special because literally everything there was done with love.

From Catherine NicoleEmily and Luis met through a church group a short five years after Luis moved to the States from Mexico. Luis transferred to the same college as Emily and their fate was sealed after a seven year courtship when he got down on one knee and proposed at a bar on the beach!

Despite Emily’s busy job as a CPA, she managed to plan a beautifully elegant wedding that balanced a fresh and clean color palate with traditional Mexican touches. Emily’s style came out through the details, as seen in the unique centerpieces and place cards that guests found on a framed bed of grass. Luis’ family traveled from Mexico to be there and a Mariachi band played at the beginning of the reception, a warm touch to celebrate the joining of two families.

From the Bride… Tacho and I met quite unexpectedly in August of 2006.  Born and raised in Indiana, I had been relocated the summer before to LA with my job as a Branch Manager for a supply chain solutions company.  I hardly expected to stay in California more than a couple years, yet on August 4th Tacho, an Engineer with Downey Fire, entered my place of work to conduct the annual fire inspection, and I met my future husband.

After the ring was permanently on place on my left hand, we got busy trying to decide where we wanted to get married.  Choosing a destination wedding was one of the easiest decisions we’ve made!  The decision fit us both perfectly for different reasons.

We are both excited to give our immediate family and closest friends the opportunity to celebrate with us for an entire week.  Tacho being the social butterfly and life of the party couldn’t be more happy to have an entire week to party with everyone.  I’m happy we were able to plan an intimate ceremony and afford a reception that all of our guests will enjoy and hopefully remember for a lifetime!  What better way to build lifelong memories than exploring the jungle in Costa Rica!

Connecticut Waterside Wedding from Maggie Conley Photography

Before I even read her story, I was so taken by this lovely bride’s smile. She was stunningly beautiful, and we could feel the love radiating off of her through Maggie Conley Photography‘s account of the day. And then I read she was one of the Jennie Fresa Beauty Library, and I knew she was genuinely a sweetheart. The whole Jennie Fresa team is. When my attention finally was brought to the phenomenal wedding, designed by Ryan Design, I was in awe. It was a gorgeous Connecticut beach affair with the most amazing florals courtesy of Hana Floral Design. I knew I couldn’t do this wedding justice, as hard as I tried, so I made sure to fill up a gallery for your viewing pleasure. That way you can get the whole effect and fall in love like we all did.

Paul and I were college sweethearts — we met at the University of Connecticut, and we both felt (although didn’t admit it to each other until years later) that it was love at first site. Fast-forward six and a half years, Paul proposed during a Christmastime trip to Newport, Rhode Island. We were about to head out to our favorite restaurant for dinner when Paul dropped to one knee, and asked me to marry him. I think you can guess what my response was!

We had always wanted a summer beach wedding. We wanted to say our vows to each other surrounded by our closest friends and family with waves crashing behind us and our toes buried in the sand. So, we decided on my hometown– a sleepy seaside town on the Connecticut shoreline.

As a makeup artist in the bridal industry, I am constantly inspired by beautiful weddings, and so I relied on the help of my magical team of wedding professionals to help me create my day. Kelly Sharkey and Emily Denny, my teammates from Jennie Fresa Beauty Library, provided hair and makeup for my bridesmaids.  The girls all raved about their makeup for days, and it was so special for me to have my team with me on my wedding.  I chose to do my own hair and makeup, to have a few moments to myself to reflect on the day.

As far as flowers went, I gave my florist, Yumiko, from Hana Floral Designs, full creative license, and essentially told her to “surprise me.” My Mom and I collected vintage vases, milk bottles, and pitchers from flea markets and antique stores for the table arrangements, which Yumiko and her team filled with succulents, gloriosa lillies, ranunculus, parrot tulips, and various other blooms in bright reds and oranges.  My bridal bouquet was stunning, and wrapped with vintage fabric, called ‘barkcloth’ which my Mom and I also found in our flea market adventures.

My photographer, Maggie, of Maggie Conley Photography, caught candid moments that I treasure. Every picture reflects personality and character, and working with her was a dream. Maggie is easy-going, understanding, and full of love. Her quiet presence allowed for personal moments to be captured without being interrupted, and at the same time, she managed to wrangle a wedding party of fifteen all together for photos after the ceremony! Quite a feat!

Our ceremony was personal and heartfelt– my Dad walked me down the aisle to “Somewhere over the Rainbow”, a song we have sung together over the years, and our officiant was one of his golf buddies. Paul’s mom, through ‘happy tears’, performed our ‘Blessing of the Rings’ ceremony.  One many favorite memories from the day was pausing, just at the start of the aisle with my Dad.  The music had started as our cue, but we stood still for a few beats just to take it all in.  It was a special moment for me and my Dad.

After the ceremony, guests only had to walk a few feet over the sand to our tented reception, which was a lightfilled, magical space created by Erik and Christen from Ryan Designs. Grapevine globes lit up with twinkle lights were suspended from the ceiling, candles flickered on every tabletop, a lounge area next to the dance floor provided respite for guests who still wanted ‘in’ on the action, and a deck with cocktail tables and tiki lanterns provided a quiet escape next to the water for my husband and I to steal a few kisses away from the crowd.  It was perfect.

Our DJ, Rich Gumpert from Powerstation Events, kept the dance floor packed! During dinner, we had an eclectic mix ranging from reggae, to bluesy standards, and in between courses, people couldn’t be kept from the dance floor! I still have guests telling me that certain songs they hear on the radio remind them of my wedding! Rich lent a microphone to a friend of ours who serenaded Paul and I after dinner, and then again at the end of the night when my college a cappella friends and I sang to close out the evening.  Not only did he keep the party going, (really! we couldn’t get people to leave!) he was amazing to work with.  From the moment we first met with him, not only did it feel like he was like a great friend, he was reliable, accommodating, and knows his music inside and out!

Dinner was much anticipated, provided by Francois Kwaku-Dongo and his team. I think I may be the only bride I know who had specifically set aside time to enjoy my entire plate of dinner!  After our initial tasting, Paul and I were raving to friends about dinner months before the wedding.  We loved everything he had prepared, and aside from a couple favorites that we chose, we also told Francois to “surprise us”, and we couldn’t have been happier.

Our beautiful cake, a divine vanilla mousseline, served with raspberry sorbet, was made by Wendy Laurent.  Yum!  Guests who still had extra room for their sweet tooth, were treated to 46 different choices from an old fashioned ice cream truck, driven by “Papa Joe”, the ice cream man my childhood friends and I all grew up with. Paul and I managed to sneak to the front of the line for toasted almond and strawberry shortcake bars! From the flowers, ambiance, music and food, to being surrounded by all the people who mean most to us, Paul and I couldn’t have asked for a more memorable, and fun evening to celebrate our new life together.

Manhattan Wedding by CLY Creation

It really doesn’t get any more timeless and elegant than this gorgeous black and white New York City soirée. This wedding is the perfect study in NYC, from the letterpress invites featuring the couple’s favorite skyline to the antique checker cab that whisked them away, to the votive candles that hung overhead as guests danced the night away. CLY Creation was on hand to capture all the classic elements that made this day the undeniable perfection that it is and lucky for us, there’s so much more in the gallery!

From the Bride…Matthew and I are both somewhat old souls, so we wanted a wedding that would be timeless, classic, and elegant. We had met and played out our love story in New York, and thus it was the natural place to be married.  In planning our wedding, we wanted to bring a New York City feel without going overboard with it. We were thinking a sophisticated black and white color scheme, black tie, lots of Sinatra. Our letterpressed invitations featured an illustration of the New York City skyline that had been drawn for us by Matthew’s sister. We wanted to keep the main invitation simple so we chose black script on white paper and incorporated the skyline drawing by printing it faintly on a vellum overlay.  We used the same skyline illustration on our out-of-town bags, which were filled with some of our favorite NYC things (like black and white cookies), as well as some classics (I “heart” NY T-shirts).

Our wedding day transportation was an antique Checker Cab, which was fitting since a taxi had played an important part in the story of how we first met. We were introduced by a mutual friend at a New Year’s Eve party in 2006 and hit it off instantly. Our goodbyes were cut short though when I spied a taxi across the street, which I ran to catch since finding an empty taxi in New York City on New Year’s Eve is a bit like winning the lottery.  Luckily, our friend gave Matthew my phone number and he called the next day. The rest was history.

We feel very fortunate to have been married at the Church of St. Francis Xavier in Chelsea, which holds a special place in our hearts since it is where we attended mass together weekly.  It is a wonderfully welcoming church with an impressive community service portfolio.  It also happens to be gorgeous, which was a big bonus!

Both Matthew and I love eating, so food played a big part in our wedding day. We took pictures at the Shake Shack, which is a NYC institution in Madison Square Park famous for its fantastic hamburgers and notorious for its long lines. Showing up in a wedding dress was a blast –everyone let us cut the line, and the employees gave us free food and a small bottle of Prosecco!  At the reception we went more upscale, with a sit down multi-course dinner and intermezzos butlered to guests on the dance floor. We lightened things up a bit at the end of the night with a gourmet chocolate bar with goodies for our guests to take home (the chocolate covered bacon was the biggest crowd pleaser!)

There were so many little details that went into the wedding – my grandmother’s rosary that I carried with my bouquet, the handkerchief wrapped around my bouquet that had been Matthew’s Christening bonnet as an infant, the DIY signs for our card table, the votive candles hung over the dance floor that twinkled over our heads all night.  We had a lot of fun with all of the planning and could not have asked for a more perfect day.

From the Groom…Dina’s from California and I’m from Canada, so I had the bright ideato take her ice-skating on our first date.  She survived, time passed, and we decided to get married.  (She said yes even though my proposal was a touch underwhelming.  I had slaved in the kitchen all-day preparing a romantic dinner, but when she got home from work she was in a rush to get some errands done.  I told her to slow down, because we were going to have a lovely dinner.  She asked why, so I told her,”Because we’re getting engaged tonight!”)

In fact, my California girl turned out to like cold weather so much, we opted for a February wedding.  As it happens, the NYAM is the perfect winter-time venue -something about libraries and books seems both grand and cozy.  It wasalso the perfect venue for us because I’m an academic, and I’ve spent lots of time in libraries.  Our families are also both full of academics and doctors, so the library of the Academy of Medicine felt right. Maybe even more importantly, Dina is a very elegant lady, and there’s nothing more elegant than a huge, wood paneled, book lined, reading room with tapestries, chandeliers, and huge windows overlooking Central Park.  Dina had the stroke of genius to design ourescort cards as mock due-date slips like the ones in the backs oflibrary books (her mother generously printed and cut every last one ofthem herself!).  The cards were a real crowd favorite, and put a personal touch on our library theme.  I also loved the fact that the library checkout counter was our bar!

From Dina, the Bride:  With my family on the other coast and Jacob’s up north, I knew we couldn’t plan the wedding without help.  Our burden was lightened when we found Sarah Pease of Brilliant Event Planning.   She used her creativity to give us ideas when we needed them and to build on our own ideas; her design was flawless.  She worked within our budget and our 4.5 month timeframe.  And on the day of, every thing went off without a hitch; there were no crises, no panics, nothing. And even if there were, we never would have known about them, because Sarah and her team took care of everything from the very beginning to the very, very end.  Among other things, she helped us find a venue that appealed to us and could handle all of the elements of our wedding in one place – the tisches (both bride’s and groom’s), thebedeken (veiling), the ceremony and, of course, the party – the NewYork Academy of Medicine.  Once we found the venue, things started falling into place.

My favorite part of the wedding was the ceremony itself.  Jacob is athorough traditionalist and I’m a traditionalist who thinks tradition was meant to be played with. So we ended up with a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony with a few twists.

If I was never able to look at another wedding after today, well, let’s face it, that would be a sad, sad day.  I might be able to live with it, however, if the last wedding I could view was this Long Beach celebration so artfully captured by JAC Photography.  I’m not sure what perfection looks like in your book but in mine it very closely resembles this.  Each detail is so lovely and so dreamy and so perfectly coordinated by Just Chic Events.  I could stare at these images for the rest of my days and be a happy camper.  See them all here!

From JAC PhotographyIvana and Arthur’s wedding took place outdoors at the Long Beach Museum of Art. The Pacific Ocean provided such a beautiful backdrop to this casual, intimate wedding. Ivana is Indonesian and had Indonesian touches throughout her wedding, from snacks, to batik fabrics, to her reception dress! The pale pinks and bright oranges were the perfect color palette for this wedding. Ivana painted all the signs herself, from the welcome sign to the Menu sign. She also provided a polaroid booth for guests to participate in her guest book! In lieu of wedding favors, the couple made a donation to a local children’s charity. One of the many highlights was an onsite live event painter! The couple had a getaway exit complete with sparklers!

From the Bride…My vision for the wedding day is inspired by two weddings. The first is a wedding in Bali that I had seen online from an ocean side wedding, filled with lanterns and string light, simplicity and fun. The second is a wedding in Santa Barbara which incorporated both the bride’s and groom’s cultures into the wedding and it was the first half outdoor/indoor wedding I had ever gone to in my whole life (Jakarta is 100 degrees Fahrenheit all year long so no one has outdoor wedding). Because of this, I decided that I wanted to have an outdoor wedding in California and we were lucky to have found Long Beach Museum of Art to host it.

We wanted to incorporate my Indonesian culture and Arthur’s American Taiwanese culture into our night. We did this by having Indonesian dessert bar and serving Indonesian coffee, having an Asian stir-fry station with the chef cooking with a big wok in front of the guests and lastly, me changing to an Indonesian traditional dress, designed by my Maid of Honor! Two of my bridesmaids’ dresses were custom made and designed by my Maid of Honor and I really love the three mismatched bridesmaid dresses. Our theme is casual elegance and we have buffet style dinner to get guests to mingle. I also printed out questions for guests to ask each other, for example “What is your dream job?” or “Would you rather meet your great great grandparents or your great great grandchildren?” This is inspired from my involvement with Toastmaster, a public speaking club.

I think one of the best parts about our wedding is that we wrote our own wedding vows, and the picture of Arthur’s laughing hard during the ceremony (Great pictures from JAC Photography yay..)… must have been from the opening of my vow: Dear Arthur, I will never forget the first time I saw you, I was thinking…what kind of guy wears a light brown suede jacket? Who would have known that this guy will one day become my husband. Most of the guests really enjoyed the humor on our wedding vows and we are so grateful to all the wedding vendors that have made this day happen.

Canadian Bushplane Heritage Museum Wedding from PALETTERA + Calla Evans

This Sault Ste. Marie wedding is beautiful. With a beautiful bride, and a beautiful groom. A beautiful stationery suite (from PALETTERA) and a beautiful color palette. And a beautiful beginning, which you are just going to have to read yourself. Every romantic, vintage, something blue detail was captured wonderfully by Calla Evans Photography, and I’ll say it once more. Beautiful. Click here to see more!

David and I met online and had our first date at a little Irish pub near my old apartment, right before he left for a short vacation to visit friends in LA. I thought the time apart might kill the momentum, but we talked the whole time he was away and by the time he returned and we were on our second date we both knew something special was happening.

On our third date I made a romantic dinner at his place, and then we went downstairs to watch a movie. There was a wild thunderstorm outside, and suddenly we heard slow creaking footsteps over our heads. We paused the movie, listening carefully, and I whispered “I think the front door is unlocked”. He sprinted up the stairs; I heard him yell and then two pairs of running feet. After a few seconds of silence I slowly crept upstairs, looked around, and walked toward the front door, which was wide open. There he was, alone, walking barefoot down the middle of the wet road, carrying my purse in his hand. He swears it wasn’t chivalry, but it made an impression. “Why on earth would you do that?” I asked, still a little shaken. “I thought he had my computer,” he answered, also a little startled by what he had just done. “Well,” we laughed, “it’ll be a good story to tell our grandchildren.”

A few weeks after that stormy night David asked me to go with him to his sister’s cottage on Georgian Bay for a few days. I was a bit nervous about heading into the woods with someone I hadn’t known very long, but a close friend reminded me of something my mother often says: don’t postpone happiness.

A little less than a year later, we returned to that cottage and as the sun set over the water, Dave asked me to marry him. After calling our friends and families to share the giddy news, we sat holding each other on the same beach where a year before, watching the Perseids meteor shower, I had wished on a falling star that that moment together might last a lifetime.

When we were first researching venues, it was Dave that suggested that he loved the idea of getting married in Sault Ste. Marie, the Northern Ontario town where I grew up and where my parents still live. Once we had made that choice, the rest of the decisions came easily. The Canadian Bushplane Heritage Museum was a place where we could have an outdoor ceremony on the water, which we wanted, and had a funky, nostalgic feeling, which we loved.

We picked Nick Drake’s song “Northern Sky” as our processional music, and the lyric “brighten my northern sky” emerged as a kind of theme. The museum made us picture a 1940s bon voyage party, or a Canadian picnic under the stars, and these ideas became an inspiration for what we wanted to create: an event with both an old-world formality and the playful ease of the outdoors.

I loved that my dress had a slight classic Hollywood look to it, and I asked Karyn Gingras at Lilliput Hats to create a vintage fascinator with a birdcage veil that would complement it. David had a tux created by Don Fabien Lee at Trend Custom Tailors that also had svelte mid-century lines and a classic feel.We picked blue and grey as our primary colours, with small touches of mauve. I asked my bridesmaids to pick out their own dresses in a palette of blue. It was partly a coincidence that they ended up as matching pairs.

My mother-in-law, Jo-Anne, discovered Palettera and brought me to meet Deborah. We really enjoyed looking through all the options, gathering ideas, and being shown beautiful papers and designs. It was also a chance for us to have time alone. On the way there we would chat and catch up. Afterward, we shopped for china together, or tried our hands at calligraphy. Heartbreakingly, we lost Jo-Anne a few months before the wedding to unexpected complications from surgery. It was, and is, a devastating loss. As difficult as it was, we knew in our hearts that she would have been adamant that we continue with our plans. I treasure all of our beautiful letterpressed stationery because it reminds me of that carefree, creative time with her.

In the end, almost every detail held some significance for us. My mother and her friends arranged the flower centerpieces. My “something old” was the necklace my grandparents had given me, pearl by pearl, as a child, which was strung together for my 16th birthday. For my “something borrowed” and “something blue”, I wore my mother-in-law’s sapphire engagement ring, lent to me by my sister-in-law who hadn’t once taken it off since her mother passed away. And the Sault itself…

Taking the formal family photos in my childhood home, the center of my emotional universe, was a very powerful moment in the day. Sault Ste. Marie is almost 700 km from where we live now, and we wish it were nearer. To have everyone we love from all corners of the world gathered in that place was very special.

From the Bride and Groom… We wanted the wedding to be a reflection of who we are as a couple: simple and easy going. So when we first saw the amazing waves and the black sand beach at Alila Villas Soori, we knew right away that it was the place where we wanted to celebrate our wedding with our closest friends and family. The ceremony was held at sunset where four of our closest friends spoke about us before the vows and rings exchange. The dinner reception was held next to an infinity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean where guests enjoyed authentic Balinese cuisine. We couldn’t have asked for a better location and a better team of people to work with throughout the entire wedding planning process. Many thanks to Alison Mayfield Photography for capturing our special moments.

From the Bride…Steve and I met in Brisbane at our friends’ home party. Steve proposed me along the Brisbane River just after we celebrated my 30th birthday at the hotel where we had an outside ceremony by the river. Since then, I have been inspired by Style Me Pretty (I am (and will be) enjoying being a SMP blogger after our wedding was over!).

After seeing many wonderful ideas, I realized that one of the most important things was to infuse my culture, Japanese tastes. I always love beautiful Japanese origami and Chiyogami papers (papers of different patterns and color layers). To reflect Japanese culture using origami papers, we started a 10-month BIG & FUN DIY project – fold 1000 colorful cranes and put them through strings. In Japan, it is said that holding 1000 cranes makes our wish come true (happy and long marriage). Thanks to my mum and friends, we could completely finish just few weeks before the wedding. With the help of our planner, they were hung at the pre-drinks space. Guests had a fun time taking photos with the poraloid camera for the guest book in front of our proudly made 1000 cranes. We also made Chiyogami paper cranes for each guest on their napkin. As bon bons, we prepared macaroons filling the wooden Sake Box that was tied with Japanese patterned ribbons sourced from Japan and a name tag on each one.

Because of various colors of cranes, we had softy-pastel colored spring flowers such as ranunculus, david austin, blushing bride and cherry blossoms. It was also important for us to incorporate with vintage chic style and personal touches. We were lucky enough to meet talented styling planners and vendors who introduced vintage vases, centerpieces, birdcages, tealight bowls, seating charts, welcome board and our “MUST ITEM” gorgeous chandelier. They were all incorporated in the reception restaurant. Big thanks to our photographer Karen, we could add a personal touch on table numbers of engagement portraits. Since we saw her photos, we could not think about other photographers. Her natural and delightful photos remind us a beautiful wedding and we enjoy seeing wedding photos every day!

We just had an extremely enjoyable time from the beginning of the wedding plan to the end of the wedding night. We could not be happier to celebrate this perfect day without families and friends coming from different destinations. Without lots of love, happiness, laugh, dance and great food, we could not have the perfect day what we exactly expected. The beautiful day just reflected two of us – wonderful memory forever.

From Melissa Hayes Photography Sometimes things just fall into place effortlessly. Our engagement session with Jen & Eric was just that… effortless.  When it came time for their wedding, I wasn’t surprised how well the day turned out… more specifically the candid session and group photos.  Though I have to confess, I did do some scouting for locations earlier in the week, but no matter how much you plan things may or may not turn out the way you envisioned.  As we made our way out for group photos, I told Jen & Eric of this spot that I had picked out… an old Chicago Firehouse.  To my surprise, I quickly learned that both Jen & Eric have family members that are firemen which made the location all the better.  Its definitely going into my book of favorite photos!

Muskoka, Ontario Wedding by Ikonica Images

If ever there were a wedding so deserving of complete gushing, it’s this sweet as can be day shot by Ikonica. Equal parts rustic and romantic, it has us dreaming of a lakeside retreat in the wilds of Ontario and all the fabulous details crafted by One Fine Day Event Planning & Design Inc. are to blame. Handmade signs, breathtaking lake views, late night s’mores– it’s all making an appearance. The Bride and Groom also pitched in for a great mix of DIY which lends to the intimate, homespun feel that we can’t seem to get enough of. See it all here!

From the Bride… Matt and I met during our first year of school at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. We are both originally from Ontario and after a few years in Vancouver, we decided to make the move back to Ontario to be closer to our families. We were engaged on June 23rd, 2010 and the wedding planning began!

The selection of the location for our wedding was one of the most important aspects of the planning process for us. We knew we wanted to have it in a place that was significant to the both of us and somewhere that we felt reflected us as individuals and as a couple. We decided to choose my family cottage as it is a place where we have shared many unforgettable times with friends and family. As many guests had travelled from far distances, we extended the wedding celebrations over the weekend and held a casual bonfire and BBQ on the Friday night before the wedding. We were lucky to have gorgeous weather and guests enjoyed summertime patio drinks and food including “Smore Love” brown paper bags which contained all the fixings for roasted smores. We really enjoyed this extra time we spent visiting with our guests and it facilitated guests meeting before the actual wedding day.

Matt and I both agreed that we wanted to create an event that was as much “like us” as possible and we wanted all of our guests to genuinely feel our gratitude towards having them there. We decided to DIY as much as we could which included hand making all of the invitations, the programs, the table seating cards, the place cards as well as painting wooden signs that were displayed throughout the cottage property. We made our invitations from scratch and the illustration on the cover was inspired by our cat named Ernie who we had adopted together. The picture of the three of “us” naturally developed into our wedding logo which we incorporated into various other elements such as personalized water bottle labels and stickers that appeared on the guests welcome gifts. Having a “wedding logo” was an amusing way to further personalize our wedding and tie everything together. In keeping with a cottage themed wedding, we made the table seating cards from small pieces of wood that we engraved with a wood burner we had purchased at an art store. Each guests name appeared on one side and the table number they were seated at on the flipside. We also hand painted small rocks with guest’s names that were placed at each place setting together with the menu we had designed and printed ourselves. The wooden signs we made from wood we found on the cottage property and then painted them with various words such as “Ceremony”, “Lake” and “Dancing”. We loved how the wooden signs turned out and felt it was a simple, inexpensive and fun way to add creativity to the event.

Guests were served a signature welcome drink as they arrived and gathered at the ceremony location while upbeat summer music played in the background. My arrival to the wedding ceremony was a bit unconventional and something that my dad and I had been planning since the minute I got engaged! My entire family is passionate about aviation (my dad, my brother and I are all licensed pilots) and with some thoughtful planning my family and I were able to fly-in to the ceremony by floatplane with my brother as the pilot! It was such an incredible experience to see all of our guests below as we flew over and I know it is something we will never forget. Overall, I think we were able to incorporate many aspects into our wedding day that reflected our passions and interests in life which we believe helped to create lasting memories that we (and hopefully our guests!) will never forget. After it was all over, we both reflected and agreed that if our guests had left our wedding with a smile on their face having felt as much sincerity and love as we did that day, then we had truly accomplished what we set out to do in the first place. I know I can safely say that we are still smiling.  Thanks to Melissa Samborski of One Fine Day Event Planning & Design Inc. for her professionalism, commitment and incredible attention to detail. Also, thank you to Gillian Williamson and her team from Ikonica for their amazing photography work and to Sinful Treats for creating the delicious cupcakes.
