Mexican Wedding Inspiration Shoot by Erin Kate Photography

This breathtaking photo shoot by Erin Kate Photography should bring inspiration to many of you lovely brides whether you are planning a destination wedding in Mexico, an elegant winter celebration or an organic union brimming with old-world romance.  I adore the seating chart banner exquisitely created with kraft paper and white ink, the paper seating flags tucked into sweet pots of figs and the natural florals wrapped in burlap and lace.  Be completely inspired in the full gallery!

From Erin Kate PhotographySmall pieces of Mexican art are used throughout this inspiration shoot. I wanted to keep the feel elegant and organic. Texture adds interest and is found in the form of lace, ribbon, twine, metal, and linen. The bride’s bouquet includes wild grasses, lavender, straw flowers, aspen leaves, eucalyptus berries, and lambs ear and is wrapped in linen and tied with a ribbon. The groom’s boutonniere is a cluster of straw flowers, grasses, eucalyptus berries on lambs ear and tied with twine and lace.

The couples rings are hung on twine and placed on a moss pillow in a metal heart box. The bride wears a beautiful lace blouse by Catherine Malandrino, a simple linen skirt, and distressed cowboy boots. A lace handkerchief was borrowed from the bride’s grandmother.

A sweet blond hen didn’t want to miss out on the celebration. Guests find their table assignments from a handwritten paper sign and are welcomed at their seat by a small bowl of figs. The wedding cake is wrapped at it’s base with lace ribbon and is adorned by a paper heart banner and a Dia de los Muertos bride and groom. A wooden angel watches over the happy couple and a candle alter is adorned with soft flowers. The bride and groom thank their guests for celebrating their wedding day with a simple “Muchas Gracias”!

El Cortez Wedding from Isari Floral Studio + Schnack Studios + Crown Weddings

The bride took one look at the 24 carat gold ceiling of El Cortez and knew it was the perfect place for her Old Hollywood wedding. Forget that Ginger Rogers and Clark Gable had once danced the night away in the same room – this fabulous couple comfortably took center stage, and rightly so.  They chose a superb team to help their wedding dreams come true – Isari Floral Studio for the fabulous floral design, Brightly Designed to announce the big day, Crown Weddings to pull everything together flawlessly, and Schnack Studios to capture it all. Plus SO many other fabulous vendors. Click here to see the affair in it’s entirety in the gallery!

Joe proposed while on vacation in Turks and Caicos. Our first night on the island, Joe insisted that we take a stroll on the beach before dinner. I was extremely hesitant (it was dark out!) and hungry (everyone knows how stubborn I get when hungry), but reluctantly I agreed. He suggested we take a picture with his brand new camera, so he walked over to a beach lounger to set up the automatic shot. As he walked back towards me, I noticed the red light wasn’t blinking – which meant it wasn’t actually taking a timed picture. Little did I know, he was recording the whole thing! Just as I was about to yell at him for setting it up wrong, he got down on one knee and recited all of the reasons he loved me, and then (of course) asked me to marry him.

Part of our inspiration for the wedding comes from the origin of the diamond he proposed with. The diamond is a family heirloom from his great-grandmother’s 1920s art deco-inspired cocktail ring. So as we started the whole planning process, we were focusing on a classic, old-hollywood vibe. The first and only venue that we visited was the historical Don Room at El Cortez. Located in Downtown San Diego, El Cortez has hosted some of the finest old-hollywood stars including Clark Gable and Ginger Rogers. Once we took at look at the 24-karat gold ceiling, we were hooked!

After we chose the venue, I couldn’t believe how fast things started to unfold! I knew from the minute Joe proposed, that I would need some wedding planning help, so I turned to Style Me Pretty’s Little Black Book and found Susanne Duffy from Crown Weddings! She was excellent and helped make my dreams turn into a reality. And more importantly – the actual day of the wedding felt flawless. After hearing some of my poorly thought-out decorative ideas, she pointed me in the direction of Tam Ashworth at Isari Flower Stuidio. Tam was able to read me like a book and extract what I was envisioning for my big day like a mind-reader.

Our top three priorities for the wedding were photography, food and music. And we could not have ended up with better vendors for each of these. John Schnack, our photographer, captured our day exquisitely and gave us some of the most beautiful memories to look back on. Barry Layne from Coast Catering designed a mouth-watering menu for us including New Zealand lamb, macadamia nut-crusted sea bass and a dessert bar filled with Baileys shooters and peanut butter chocolate bombs. The band, NDEMAND, was the biggest hit of all! Our friends and family (young and old) were able to rock out on the dance floor. I swear it felt like we were at a private concert.

Vermont Wedding by Dreamlove Wedding Photography

Gorgeous. Simply, perfectly gorgeous. And really, that doesn’t even begin to describe my feelings on this fall fête captured by Dreamlove Wedding Photography in the picture perfect town of Woodstock, Vermont. There aren’t words for how much I love every bit of this wedding. It embraces all that is lovely about a Vermont wedding done so with loads of that understated style I just can’t get enough of. From the covered bridges to the vintage stoles to the bride’s mittens (so adorable), it’s the definition of vintage chic perfection. Click here for even more to swoon over!

From Dreamlove Wedding PhotographyThanks for taking the time to look over this vintage-travel-inspired Vermont winter wedding. Shay incorporated all sorts of unique DIY details into her day, but she also incorporated some very old family traditions. She wore her great great grandmother’s gold bracelet, from 1847, and wrapped her gorgeous bouquet up with a vintage brooch from her grandmother. Shay also treated her bridesmaids like royalty! She gave them gorgeous silk robes and gave them each a vintage fur stole to keep warm during her brisk November wedding! Shay herself wore a vintage fur shoulder wrap and an adorable set of mittens! Seth proposed to Shay at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, so she also incorporated lots of French details into the decor. She decorated the chapel with live moss and twigs, and used vintage postcards for at the table names. Shay herself designed the seating cards as vintage-style luggage tags. To top off the evening, guests set wish lanterns into the night sky… it was so beautiful!

From The Bride…Seth proposed in Paris, at the Eiffel Tower, on my birthday. With such an amazing proposal, you’d think he’d planned it for months, but he decided to propose the week before while we were vacationing in Ireland with his family! He bought a simple band with a gold Celtic knot from a local goldsmith in Dingle, Ireland and of course, I said yes!

We decided on a fall wedding, my favorite season. November always brings warm feelings of family and friends, long walks in the crisp air and cozy afternoons warming by the fire. It seemed like the perfect time for a romantic, vintage wedding!  Even though we live in Colorado, both of our families are on the east coast so we decided on a “destination wedding” in Woodstock, Vermont – the quintessential quaint New England town, picture perfect, down to its covered bridges. Everything was within walking distance of the incredible Woodstock Inn, and their grand fireplace quickly became the spot to stop and chat with family and friends.

We wanted our wedding to be elegant but rustic, vintage and romantic. It was so important to us to have the wedding truly be about our union and creating an evening for our closest family members and friends to celebrate. So, we created our own ceremony, wrote our own vows and had Seth’s brother officiate it for us. We had our guests bless our rings and after our unity candle, offer each other a sign of peace to bring the families together. The reception was held afterwards at The Woodstock Inn, decorated with old family photos, vintage elements and everything was accented with moss and candles. We ended the night sending up wish lanterns and watching them disappear into the starry night.

Everything came together so fabulously with so much help from our fabulous family members and vendors. Anthologie Press did an unbelievable job creating our print materials and I can’t thank my parents enough for the endless crafting they did to bring this together. Dreamlove Photography documented our day more amazingly than I could have ever imagined and were such a breeze to work with.  It was a day we will never forget!

My advice to brides planning now… squeeze your fiancé and breathe. The day really will be worth it!

NYC Engagement Session by Allan Zepeda

Allan Zepeda kicks MAJOR photography booty and the proof is in this gorgeous engagement shot at Skylight West  in New York. Light, airy, WILDY GORGEOUS – these are just a few descriptive words that come to mind but above all else, it’s a beautiful moment in time between a soon to be family. One that has us poring over every millisecond of its gorgeousness. Care to join in the pretty party? See it all here!

From the Bride-To-Be…We met in Jurmala, Latvia at a music festival called New Wave. (Something similar to Eurovision maybe). We were not performing, we were guests. My best friend introduced us to each other. We spent 4 days in Jurmala, then we didn’t see each other for a year. Ilya says it was love at first sight for him. The following year we met there again and then started dating. Had a long distance relationship for a while (I lived in Moscow, Ilya in NY). Then we moved to London together. When I graduated from fashion school in London we decided to move to NY to work and move in together. That was 2 years ago.

On November 6th 2010 he proposed. This was the day of both of our parents anniversary. It was unexpected, very romantic and at  home…The hurricane in the Carribean ruined his plans to propose on Turks and Caicos so we had an amazing weekend after the proposal. It was like a mini honeymoon.

The wedding is in Venice, Italy. Venice was my idea. It’s a destination wedding. We don’t have relatives there or anything. We just spent a lot of vacations there since we were kids and know the country well and love it too. Italians have good taste for beautiful things, food and wine. And know how to party and enjoy life! It’s going to be totally crazy, 350 guests for 3 days. We are building a huge tent on the island of San Clemente. There will be fireworks, artists and our best friends from all over the world! And family of course. Our parents love us a lot and are very excited for us and helpful too.

As for the photo shoot, we hired Allan Zepeda from NYC and for our engagement and wedding photos. We love his style and knew it was a perfect fit for our love and passion. He was so easy to work with. We wanted a studio space so he proposed the idea to have our engagement photos at Skylight West.

Skylight West perfectly fuses the industrial with the glamorous to create a wedding venue that is quintessentially NYC. With views of sunset on the Hudson, the Empire State Building, and a finely finished loft interior, Skylight West customizes each wedding to reflect the inherent aspects of both the couple and the city.

Plum Pretty Sugar Loungerie Twelve Days of Christmas Film by Elysium Productions

This festive Twelve Days of Christmas film by Elysium Productions is pretty much the cutest Christmas video we’ve come across and it features our favorite frocks from our good friends at Plum Pretty Sugar Loungerie. Just imagine, getting one of these pretty little numbers each day for twelve days! How fabulous would that be? The New York Botanical Garden Wedding by Erin Hearts Court

If I could crawl into a wedding and live there for the rest of the day today, this gorgeous floral-filled fête at the The New York Botanical Garden captured by Erin Hearts Court would be my first pick. Folks, I just don’t think it gets any lovelier than this. Overflowing with images of the gorgeous florals by Bowman Dahl that make my heart leap and a couple so cute I want to pinch their cheeks, the gallery is THE place to be this afternoon!

From the Bride…Kerry and I wanted our wedding to be timeless and romantic with a naturally beautiful backdrop. As a child, my family took frequent trips to the New York Botanical Garden. It is full of great memories, many of which include my grandparents who passed away some years ago. On almost every trip we made there we would have lunch at the Stone Mill, outside next to the rushing stream. As luck would have it, we discovered that the Stone Mill had just finished renovations and was now a private event venue. It was of course the perfect choice.

When I found my dress the theme of the wedding really fell into place. It was classic with vintage flare and the skirt was a lovely concoction of silk organza cut in strips reminiscent of feathers. I paired it with a feather headpiece by Erica Koesler. We placed sterling silver pheasant sculptures and birds nests on the tables and used feathered calligraphy to embellish our invitations, menus and programs. Kerry sported a pair of winged cuff links.

Two of my bridesmaids were in their third trimester of pregnancy on the day of the wedding, so we went with Two Birds dresses for their flexibility and to avoid last minute tailoring.

We chose peonies as the dominant flower for their beauty, practicality, and symbolism. They embody romance and prosperity and are considered an omen of good fortune and a happy marriage. Their lush layered blooms seemed to compliment the delicate feather motif. Bowman Dahl did a beautiful job with the arrangements, using exotic varieties of peonies, berries, orchids, and sweetpeas in mercury glass footed bowls.

On that perfect June day with our nearest and dearest, we were married under a beautiful arbor (made by Kerry’s good friend Sebastian Vikkelsoe) draped with fruit laden passionflower vines. Our officiant Susanna Macomb conducted an incredibly personal and intimate ceremony, and as one of my friends said, “There wasn’t a dry eye in the house.”

Chelsea Piers Wedding from Exquisite Affairs Productions + Joseph Lin

This adorable couple met in an elementary social studies class, and even though it wasn’t love at first site, they gave into the inevitable chemistry a few years later on a Staten Island ferry ride home. And we are so glad they did! They are cute as can be – and with the help of Exquisite Affairs Productions, they created a wedding so perfectly personal, I feel like I’ve known them forever. Joseph Lin Wedding Photography packed an entire gallery full with fantastic images – and Michael Justin Films sent over a highlight film from the day. How lucky are we?

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/31083138 601 338]

After dating for eight years, a proposal was expected in the near future, especially when we decided to take a trip out of town on the Fourth of July holiday.  However, Gordon always has awful luck in planning any event (a “Charlie Brown” factor), and he was true to form for the proposal.  We had taken a trip to Hershey Park, where we would be making customized chocolates.  It could have been very romantic, except for the fact that we were sandwiched in between screaming kids and large tourist groups.  I learned later on that Gordon thankfully passed on this window to propose.  We then set out for the park at night to catch the fireworks…only our timing was off, and the fireworks show was more like a dud.  We skulked back to the hotel, where Gordon ordered room service.  I thought this must be it!  I lifted up the metal tray eagerly, only to find chicken fingers.  I could feel myself getting woozy.  We settled in for bed, and I shut my eyes tight, ready to call it a day.  At the last possible moment, when I thought it was never going to happen, Gordon woke me up with an open ring box in my face.  He had pulled through after all!

We wanted to eschew the traditional wedding trappings: no draped chairs, hotel banquet halls, or over-styled floral arrangements.  When we saw the Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers, it just felt right – a modern setting situated on the New York City coastline.  This was something that spoke to all of the Staten Island ferry rides we had taken as a couple.

We wanted the wedding to look really clean and simple, hence gray and yellow seemed like a natural choice.  In terms of style, we wanted a touch of kitsch to personalize the event.  Vintage robots played off our color schemes and our personalities as a couple.  At the end of the day, we find ways to make each other laugh, remind ourselves to seek the playful side of life and have fun together, simply put.

We both come from different cultural backgrounds, and we wanted to incorporate those elements into our wedding.  As part of our ceremony, we included the Filipino tradition of a cord and veil, as a symbol of the union of marriage and sign of mutual support of each other, binding us in a lifelong commitment to be one in mind and heart.  To bring in Gordon’s Chinese background, we held a small tea ceremony during the reception, as a way to show respect and appreciation to our family.

Our most vivid memories from the wedding day were seeing all the people we love in one room, enjoying themselves and letting loose, getting really creative with props at the photobooth or wilding out to music on the dance floor.  We also enjoyed a quiet moment together while heading to the reception in a vintage cab, which took our breath away.

Our photographer, Joe Lin, videographer, Michael Porco, and our wonderful planner, Christine Viola and Exquisite Affairs Production, made every minute memorable, truly amazing, and unforgettable.  We were never a couple that visualized our exact wedding from detail to detail but all of our vendors painted our story exactly as we would never imagine it could have been portrayed.

Christmas DIY Potluck by Salt Harbor Designs + Millie Holloman Photography

Two of our all-time favorite vendors – Salt Harbor Designs + Millie Holloman Photography – joined forces to get us all in the holiday spirit!  Their fun and festive Christmas DIY potluck is not only an amazing an idea for bringing a little crafting cheer to your friends and family and getting your home holiday-ready but it would also be such a sweet party for you and your bridesmaids to knock out all those wedding DIY projects too, don’t you think?  I absolutely adore the moss and paper trees that they easily whipped up and can’t wait to get my craft on now!  Scroll through to see all their holiday handiwork and learn some incredible DIY projects that you can do at home!  Then head on over to the full gallery to see the entire gleeful gathering!

Moss Trees:
1. Put Styrofoam in the base of a pot and cover the foam with moss.
2. Wrap a cone with sheet moss using floral pins or floral wire bent into pins.
3.Push a short branch into the base of the cone to form the trunk (curly willow branches work great for trees with character). Glue it into place to make sure it is secure and let cool.
4. Push the other end of the branch into the pot. Glue into place.
* Styrofoam can also be covered with materials such as twine, music, book pages, burlap, cinnamon sticks, etc.

Table runner: We created a table runner out of old book pages, first laying down a sheet of brown paper and taping the pages to it. This not only protected the tablecloth from wax from the taper candles, but also provided great protection once it was craft time.

Book Wreaths:
1. Tear pages from an old book and fold the pages into small fans (do not crease paper, just bend).
2. Staple the fan near the bottom. Make enough to cover the outside and inside of the wreath.
3. Glue the fans to the inside ring of the wreath, overlapping enough that you do not see the wreath form.
4. Glue fans to the outside ring of the wreath (also overlapping).
5.To finish the wreath between the inner and outer rings, you will need fans that are ½-1” shorter than the others. Cut down pages, and repeat the folding, stapling, and gluing process.
6. Fill in the rest of the wreath until you cannot see the form.

From Salt Harbor DesignsI am asked all the time what my house looks like, and I always have to laugh. It would certainly not be what people imagine! At Salt Harbor we design so many things for our clients and their events that oftentimes we are just too tired to focus on our own homes. Crafts and creative projects are an every day occurrence for us, so doing them at home is not quite as enjoyable as it might be for some. This Christmas I thought it would be fun if we held a Christmas party with our staff and their families to design things for our own homes. We invited friends, moms, and of course, the girls at Millie Holloman Photography (who share our office space). Between the staff at Salt Harbor and Millie Holloman Photography, everything always tends to get bigger than we planned, and this was no different. The idea turned into a pot-luck dinner and crafting photoshoot. We transformed a section of our office space into a craft room, complete with supplies, stations, and blackboard instructions. We had more fun than we could have ever imagined, and I dare say, we created a Christmas tradition that will be expected every year!

We sent out invitations encourgaing our guests to bring their cutest aprons and any crafting supplies they could gather. They hit the stores in the days before the party and bought up all of the styrofoam they could find. We also tasked specific guests with requests such as brining greenery, holly, pin cones, and moss. Each guest brought a appetizer, entree or dessert. Everyone arrived arms loaded with more supplies, food and wine than we could have ever anticipated or consume. A week later everyone is still buzzing over all the festivities and their new decorations!

Tip: We purchased a bunch of old books for 50 cents at a local book store. Many of them were old romance novels, which gave a number of the girls the giggles. You would have thought we were school children!

On the book page trees: Book page trees are all the rage this year and can be found in many stores for as much as $50. Our version ran us less than $5 and you would never know they did not come from a trendy store!

From the cute as can be little ones to the gorgeous bride, the gallery is full of so much eye candy you need an entire day to take it all in!

From the Bride…Stephen and I grew up in different states of Australia, about 3 hours apart. Despite Stephen living in my home town Sydney for a couple of years we didn’t actually meet until both on holiday in Thailand in 2007. We immediately hit it off and returned home to Australia knowing we had met someone really special. Soon after that initial meeting, Stephen got offered a job in Perth and despite only knowing each other for 5 months we took a huge leap of faith and decided to move to Perth together.

Many years and many new friends later, we made the tough decision to move back to Sydney to be closer to our families. Before we left Perth though we had a trip organized with Stephen’s family to Malaysia. It was here that Stephen romantically whisked me away, packed picnic lunch and bottle of Dom Pérignon in tow. He hired a long boat, a private island and on bended knee asked if I would be his wife. I said yes of course!

When it came to planning the wedding, we wanted the wedding to reflect who we both are as individuals and as a couple. We also wanted to incorporate the fact that many places have been home to us. As soon as we saw Gunners Barracks we knew this was it. It was old world (a bit like us), it had the army theme (which is just sooo Steve) and it was in the most beautiful location. It was the first place we saw and we snapped it up. When it came to creating a theme for the wedding, we knew we wanted it to be romantic, elegant and with a lot of personal DIY touches. My sister and I trawled through many blogs, our favorite being SMP, looking for inspiration for little DIY projects.

We designed all our own stationery, incorporating the chandelier from the reception, and a black and white theme. The escort cards were postcards, one side welcomed our guests to the wedding and directed them to their destination table, the other side was a montage of the awesome Tealily Photography engagement shots we had done. We also had a destination sign as you entered the reception (made by my older brother), which included the names of all the tables, which were destinations special to Stephen and I. We handmade signs for each table, the cookie buffet, guest book table etc. We also designed postcards with message prompts, in lieu of a guest book, which on the night guests filled out and popped into our letterbox.

Each place setting was a polaroid picture of each person’s name with a little “eat drink and be married” tag pegged to the “Zine”. The “Zine” (which means mini magazine) was a little scrapbooked booklet which included the menu, a little spiele about how we met, who the bridal party were, what was special about the places we had picked as our tables and some marriage advice from our parents. It also included a page with the pictures of our parents on their wedding day. We also had heaps of polaroids left over from the place settings and at the last minute we decided to do a DIY photobooth which was a great hit, and the polaroids turned out awesome.

The actual day was perfect. I was freaking out the day before as it poured non stop with crazy sideways rain. Even as we were going to bed the night before they were forecasting the weather to be the wettest August day on record, with wind warnings issued. I think it’s pretty safe to say I was pretty devastated, but I knew there was nothing I could do. When I woke up, the sun was trying to shine, and as the day went on the sun came out and continued to shine! By the time I arrived at the church you wouldn’t have even know that it had been raining. We were so lucky and it was perfect. Everything went off without a hitch, the food and service was absolutely amazing, and Steve and I had the greatest time. We are so lucky to have had so much help from our family and such an amazing team of vendors who made our wedding so special.

The Murphy Auditorium Wedding by Mattson Pictures

The library is by far my favorite place in the world to be, so it warms my heart when I see a fabulous soiree boasting a sweet literature theme.  And this stunning Chicago affair captured by Mattson Pictures is all about the library love (and then some) with a bundle of charming book-themed details, including novels as centerpieces and some darling vintage book photo frames to showcase family weddings.  LOVE that.  Plus, the escort card table was crafted using antique card catalogs and that’s always a good thing.  Thankfully, the gallery is literally overflowing with amazing moments, because you don’t want to miss a minute of lovely.  Join me there for more!

From the Bride… Phil and I met during law school at DePaul in Chicago so when we became engaged, we knew immediately that we wanted to celebrate our wedding in the same city where we laugh, love and live together. We have attended St. Michael’s Parish in Old Town as a couple for the past five years and it is home to us. Originally built in 1852, St. Michael’s is an awe-inspiring Catholic Church with beautiful old-world architecture, a magnificent clock tower that captures the essence of the historical area, and a sense of warmth and community that makes everyone feel welcome. Finding a reception location was a bit more difficult because there are so many unique venues in Chicago that it is hard to choose! We found the Murphy Auditorium unexpectedly after I saw a photo of the venue in a Chicago Bridal Magazine. When we walked into the Murphy for the first time, we fell in love with the ornate details, stained-glass windows, and the feel of old-world European architecture.

The overall theme first began with my wedding dress. I found a beautiful silk Christos by Amsale gown with a rich champagne tone that really complimented the classic, old-world Chicago look that we wanted to create. We wanted to incorporate books into our day since we spent lots of time together in the library during law school and Phil’s mother is the Director of a library in their hometown so literature is near and dear to us. Over the next eighteen months, I collected and crafted items with the help of my amazing friends and family to pull together our theme. My favorite projects were creating escort card boxes out of my mother-in-law’s antique library catalog, and creating photo frames out of old books to showcase photos of our family members on their wedding day.

We feel so fortunate that we had the opportunity to work with amazing vendors, like our photographers Karen and Doug Mattson, who are creative and unique in their work, who made us feel like a priority, and who we got along with very well from the start. We were also very lucky to have our day of coordinator, Tiffany Munster, because she orchestrated the event and made it seamless- if anything went awry, I still do not know about it!

My favorite moment of the day was standing on the altar at St. Michael’s, reciting my personal vows to Phil. I had written my vows weeks in advance and said them over and over to myself but standing up there, and for the first time, saying my vows aloud to Phil, I felt a deep sense of overwhelming joy and love for him. Everything about our day was absolutely perfect and we were so blessed to be surrounded by so many people who love and care about us! Our day was truly a reflection of us as a couple and what we love.

Miller Lash House Wedding by Joee Wong Photography

I am just eating this wedding by Joee Wong Photography up with a spoon. It’s beyond adorable and such a fun reflection of the couple’s personality. With a subtle school theme executed to perfection – their guests were greeted with creative details around each and every corner. From the bride carrying a book down the aisle instead of a bouquet to report card thank you cards, it’s all as adorable as they come! Click here for more!

From the Bride…For most people, having gone through years of schooling, fall will always be the real New Year. And so it was fitting that on October 1, 2010, Greg and I started a new beginning together, at a heritage house on the university campus where we’d shared our first kiss exactly twelve years prior. We’d always known there was a heritage house on the school grounds, but we’d never been inside. As soon as we toured the Miller Lash House, with its simple but elegant Arts and Crafts architecture, we knew it would be perfect for our small wedding. Once the venue was booked we had our inspiration: school! We wanted the wedding to feel intimate, unique, and fun. Most of all, we wanted to celebrate our friends and family. We’d been together so long anyway that it already felt like we were married, but there was something special about celebrating our relationship with our loved ones. That something special was them. And so every detail was designed to put people at ease, make them grin, and keep the party going.

We started with our Save the Dates and wedding website, which served as the invitation. With only 48 guests, most of whom were our age, we knew e-mail was the easiest way for them to communicate. (The eco-friendly aspect was a bonus!) Designing the website and logo helped us narrow down our wedding colors—bright blue and apple red. The blue came from a chalk animation on the website, and the apple evokes school like no other symbol. We felt the colors would provide cheerful accents among the dark wood of the venue, my bridal whites, and the groom’s soft grey. The groom even made a wedding-day purchase of bright red socks, which was the perfect touch.

Greg is a software engineer, and I am a children’s book agent and editor. Clearly, he is a numbers guy, and I am a letters girl. Since school is where you learn your numbers and letters, we knew designing with these elements would strengthen our school theme. We started with the logo’s nod to binary code and continued from there.

I’m not big on flowers, so I decided to carry a book down the aisle instead. Much more me! Stealing an idea from a Martha Stewart Weddings magazine, I’d punched out circles in the book’s pages, and so my “bouquet” also doubled as a ring holder. Our centerpieces were simple white bowls piled high with Red Delicious apples. Guests who took them home found lotto scratch cards (crossword or Scrabble, in keeping with our theme) underneath the apples.

As our guests arrived, they were instructed to fish out a pinback button from a bucket. Each button had a number on it, written out in letters, Roman numerals, Arabic numerals, or even binary. Later during the cocktail hour, guests had to find their matching number (e.g. “three” might be paired with “III”). It was a great icebreaker, and we loved hearing the stories afterward of our friends struggling to figure out their number and the conversations they ended up having once they met their match. Also set up for the cocktail hour was a school picture station with a white backdrop and a bucket of props, including a dunce cap, diplomas, mortar board cap, and prom corsages.

Our guestbook matched our ring book, but inside we’d pasted pockets with homemade library cards, on which our guests could write their well wishes. At the signing desk, two of our friends acted as our “librarians,” handing out the cards and stamping them with the wedding date when they were returned. Naturally, we used a chalkboard on which to write our seating chart, but for an extra bit of fun (or not, depending on how you feel about math!) guests had to solve a math equation to find out their table number. Inside, jam jars were marked with chalk to display the table numbers; the jars doubled as pencil holders.

At each table setting, each guest had their own little red cahier (for those not in the Canadian school system, this is what we called our exercise books, from the French word for notebook). These cahiers took the most work, but it was worth it! Inside were a crossword puzzle, bingo card, Sudoku puzzle, and Tic-Tac-Toe page. Whichever table solved their crossword first would get to eat first. Since each crossword consisted of clues about the other guests at your table, you had to get talkin’ with your tablemates if you wanted to eat! We played bingo for the kissing game. Instead of the word “bingo,” the word “kiss” was at the top of each bingo card. People had to donate money to get us to call out a bingo piece. Eventually, someone yelled out “Kiss!” when they got a winning combo, we obliged, and proceeds went to a charity that donates books to needy children. The Sudoku and Tic-Tac-Toe puzzles were bonus activity pages in case a guest got bored at any point. (What? At a wedding? Never!)

Marigolds & Onions helped us design a comfort-food menu to warm us up on an Ontario fall evening. They went above and beyond with the food and the details. I was momentarily confused when I saw the menu cards, wondering when I’d made them. Turns out M&O had designed them to match our design suite, secretly clipping our logo and font from our Save the Date e-mail!

The favors were lunch bags sealed with a sticker of our logo. Inside were two Filipino treats and two Dutch treats, so everyone could take home a taste of our parents’ homes. And finally, the thank-you cards were…what else? Report cards! Each one was personalized with such subjects as Advanced Eating. We had a very good class this year.

When we checked out wedding magazines and blogs to help us plan, we knew we didn’t want the themes and inspirations to overtake the wedding and overwhelm us. It’s easy to get carried away with a theme. But it helped to remember that everything should have a purpose. Every detail that reflected the school theme was something that was needed for the party, whether it was to direct guests or get them talking, and most important, it all reflected who we are as a couple. Everyone else seemed inspired, too, as our officiant talked about learning the formula for love and the dinner-hour speeches included graphs, pie charts, and a null hypothesis. Creating many elements of our wedding was so much fun and made us that much more excited for the actual day, when we could see it all come together. Judging from our guests’ feedback, it was the very definition of a celebration.

From the Bride…My DIY projects for the wedding were the invites and thank you cards, the table escort cards, the frames with the table names, and the biggest job was the magnets. I made those from beads and random jewelry pieces. They were made in honor of my mother-in-law, who loves to collect magnets whenever she travels. I thought they would be a nice gift for our guests to remember the Costa Rica wedding they attended. I wanted them to look a bit like brooches, and I thought they would be pretty on the table settings. I am OBSESSED with terrariums right now, so one of my favorite details of the wedding were the glass jars with the orchids in them. Tropical Occasions really made that happen for me! Aimee’s vision for the wedding was perfect for Mario and I…her inspiration was Cartagena. Very romantic, and true to us because the first time Mario took me to Colombia, we stayed in Cartagena. She suggested the Senor and Senora chair decorations, which I ordered from Etsy. I also mentioned that I love baby’s breath (which I was a little embarrassed to admit, because it always makes me think of cheesy 80’s wedding), but she made the flowers so fresh and modern.

Mario and I moved to Albuquerque at the same time, back in 2006. His job brought him here, and my pediatric residency did the same. We met about a year later through friends. They arranged for us to be dance partners in a salsa class. We’ve been together ever since. Although I always have to mention that we still can’t salsa dance. I knew pretty early on in our relationship that Mario would be a great husband. He took care of me during my pediatric residency in a way that no one ever has. I knew he loved me when he fixed my broken car window (after someone had broken it early one morning to take the CD player), drove it to the hospital so that I would have it to drive home after my shift, and then walked home. He always made sure I was OK. And the fact that he is hilarious and a beautiful singer is just icing on the cake.

I knew the engagement was coming up, because Mario is a planner and he asked me what type of ring I would like. That being said, he still wanted to surprise me, which he certainly did. I came home from work one Saturday, put on some grubby clothes and we watched TV until I fell asleep on the couch. When I woke up, he told me that he put together a slideshow on his new iPad. This is classic Mario…he is a computer nerd to the max. I didn’t suspect anything because he had just gotten the iPad and was trying out all the new features. He named the presentation “Oh, the places we will go”, and put together all of the places we’ve talked about visiting in the future. At the end of the slideshow, it was a picture of Albuquerque. He then started to talk about how it’s not just where we’ll go, but when we will start our adventure. He then had an “X” on the screen and he said something like “X marks the spot”, and when he touched the screen, the “X” traveled to the edge of the screen, where he pulled out the ring that he had been holding the whole time. He then got down on his knee and asked me to marry him.

That is one reason we chose Costa Rica…Mario came up with the idea and really felt that it would be symbolic of our commitment to travel. Also we really wanted an intimate, personal ceremony. There was family pressure to get married in Colombia and there was pressure to get married in the states. We had never been to C.R., but we had only heard great things and felt we couldn’t go wrong. (Boy, were we right!) We chose May 24th as our date because my grandparents (both deceased) got married on that date. They were married for 60+ years and had a huge family. We both wanted to honor our grandparents and family that day, so I carried my other grandmother’s rosary with the bouquet and Mario had his great grandmothers rosary (his GGM passed in January). We had “Tita”, his grandmother say one of the readings during the ceremony (on an iPad; Mario was very proud). Our friend, Teresa Vigil, married us. It was her first wedding and she was able to do it in Spanish and English. Perfect for our guests.

The song that Mario sang was a surprise to me. He sang the song from Juno…it’s a Barry Louis Polisar song…”All I want is You”. That was my favorite moment because I LOVE it when he sings and plays the guitar. The harmonica was new…I had never seen him play before! It was such a beautiful day, from start to finish. I hope I never forget that feeling when I saw the church with the open doors, and the flowers hanging down from the ceiling, and I could feel our family’s and friend’s love and positive energy. It was overwhelming (thus the crying that took place, glad I was able to pull it together for a little bit). Such a sweet moment. I ADORE the pictures Katie took because even though I could feel everyone’s presence, the only face I saw the whole time I was in the chapel was Mario.

From Cory Ryan PhotographyBeing invited to shoot a wedding for these two uber creative Pump Project artists was quite an honor. Upon arriving at Star Hill Ranch and seeing all of their amazing DIY details, I was over the moon! The couple’s favors were hand-made animal paintings that did double duty as table seating cards. The groom wore a leather Texas belt buckle and an old timey bow tie. He hand made boutonnieres for himself and the groomsmen (guys can be crafty too!) – made with a branch, succulent air plant and buttons in shades of opalescent pink and purple. These looked great paired with the vintage looking fuschia ties and the bridesmaids deep lavender purple dresses. The bride wore a lovely and classic strapless dress delicately ornamented with just a touch of sequenced flowers and leaves.

For the ceremony, Joelle constructed a hanging wall of multicolored yarn poms that were so original and provided a perfect photo backdrop. Brightly colored lanterns set the stage for venue. And in the romantic little white chapel, guests escaped the heat with ice cold A/C and decorated their own fans, got their programs, signed the thumbprint tree with ink, and sat catching up in comfort.

After the ceremony, guests moved to another one of the cool outcrop of amazing old-timey-Texas looking buildings on the estate of Star Hill Ranch. Kids were invited to have fun at the arts and crafts table, which every parent loved!! Appetizers were served buffet style, while the Whiskey Shivers sung their down home songs in perfect harmony. Influenced by everything from Johnny Cash to Jolie Holland, this high energy roaring string band has to be seen to be believed. After taking the couple around the property for some photos – who can resist and old broken down truck and tractor? The couple waltzed in the street al fresco. One of my favorite moments from the day is when the couple practiced their dance inside a room of stained glass. Perfect light and a perfect moment.

Later guests moved over to dining hall for dinner catered by Pink Avocado. Joelle constructed the singularly most amazing centerpieces I may have ever seen. Spray painted horses & dinosaurs in pastel candy colors were surrounded with table numbers and frames with nested birds atop and both real and fake pom flowers inter dispersed. Other super creative touches were stones with guest names written on them in silver at each table setting and a handmade cake complete with wooden personalized figurines on top and fondant version of their cat and dog on the second tier was amazingly cute!

Dinner closed with cleverly personalized toasts, including Jason’s sweet toast to Joelle about finally finding the perfect woman. Then guests were invited out to the dirt road for the first dance a la two step and more dancing and music played by the band.

The Foundry Park Inn Wedding by Ali Harper Photography

From the Bride…Ryan and I met in Athens nine years ago, as freshmen at the University of Georgia. We’ve been together for eight years, but not always actually together. After graduating, he lived in Boston while I lived in Atlanta. After three years of long-distance dating, we met in the middle–Indianapolis, where we live now. We considered six or seven different cities to get married in–everywhere from Chicago to Savannah to San Juan (we love to travel and have been fortunate to take many trips together). But something about Athens, going back to where it all began, just felt right.

I come from a big Italian family but didn’t want a big traditional Italian wedding. We both wanted a simple celebration that was close-knit and comfortable, with lots of good food and lots of dancing. And that’s exactly how it turned out! The Foundry was the perfect venue because it’s like a small village with everything you need in walking distance. Our ceremony was inside the historic foundry space, and our reception was outdoors on the pavilion and lawn. The weather couldn’t have been better–mid 70s and not a cloud in the sky in late September. It was like a perfect “Indian Summer” day, which is what we’d hoped for all along.

New Hampshire Wedding by Sweet Tea Photography

Welcome back to another fabulous week of wedding inspiration at Style Me Pretty Massachusetts!  We are heading north across the border today for a lovely New Hampshire wedding by Sweet Tea Photography.  This darling bride and groom made an effort to marry their own individual styles for their perfect wedding.  The result is simple elegance at its best.  It is formal but not too fussy, romantic, thoughtful and sweet all at the same time.  Just charming!  See it all in the full gallery!

Click here to see the entire gallery of images!

From Sweet Tea PhotographyOn September 2nd, 2011, Amy Powers and Nate Powers married at The Mountain View Grand Resort in Whitefield New Hampshire. The White Mountains made a lovely backdrop for their ceremony.  Amy & Nate met in high school but didn’t begin dating until after they reconnected at a New Years Party in 2007.

From the Bride…Initially I set two requirements for a wedding venue. First, there had to be accommodation within walking distance of the reception so guests would not have to be concerned about driving or waiting for a shuttle. Second, I wanted the reception space to have windows and not feel like a conference room. This narrowed the options significantly! Once the list was down to three, I ultimately chose the Mountain View Grand because of the beautiful location, the charming details only found in a historic building, and the excellent service.

In planning and designing my wedding, I stalked Martha Stewart Wedding, Vera Wang’s blog, and Style Me Pretty! I also interrogated my cousins, sister, and friends who have been married. Regarding look and feel, I am very feminine and I like pretty things, Nate is very functional and minimalist. I wanted formal, he wanted casual. In an effort to marry our tastes as well as ourselves, I kept channeling “simple elegance”. Nothing over the top or ornate, just simply elegant. A garden theme evolved through the process as well since the ceremony was going to be next to a garden, the reception was in the garden room, the flowers were garden roses, and the favors were honey. We stuck to basic ideas with lovely details. My biggest inspiration, however, was my dress, which was what ultimately set off the simple elegance train of thought. Groom aside, it was my favorite wedding detail. If I were to be a dress- that is what I would look like.

I chose to wear ballet flats rather than heels on my wedding day. My first thought was a pair of lovely heels. However, upon further consideration I knew I was going to want to switch to flats part way through the reception, and then I would be tripping over my dress! Not to mention, I wasn’t convinced I would be able to walk in heels on the grass, you never know how wet the ground will be etc. So on to plan B. I have always loved ballet, despite my complete lack of talent! Plus I love pink. I thought It would be pretty to have the little bits of pink peeking out, not to mention they were comfortable! I was able to dance all night.

My favorite part of the wedding day was when the groom and groomsmen gave an impromptu performance! They are all talented musicians.

I would tell future brides that: Organization, schedules, spreadsheets, checklists, will keep you calm. Just remember it is a joyous occasion, and allow the whole process to be fun! It doesn’t need to be stressful. Stay on top of it, do little bits every day. Allow people to help when you need it, and politely decline when you don’t. Remember you cannot make everyone happy. Someone will have their feelings get hurt, and someone will be mad at you about something. It’s inevitable, but you cannot let it ruin your process or your day. They’ll either get over it, or they won’t. And if they don’t, that’s on them.

Rise and shine LBBers! This Manhattan couple is so chic, they seriously could have just walked out of a glossy magazine. In fact, these gorgeous images from Captured Photography by Jenny exude such a glamour that we all feel like we should be putting on our fancy pants just to spend a little time with this gorgeous couple in the city that never sleeps. So when you’ve put on your sparkly stilettos, you can meet me and my fancy pants in the full image gallery for even more of this stunning engagement sesh!

Click here for more in the full image gallery!

Jonathan and I chose to have some of our engagement photographs done in Central Park, as it is a tranquil spot but you still see the sweeping skylines of New York City in the background. It is romantic and features some of the most amazing scenery in New York City with its natural woods, lakes and walking tracks. It is one of our favorite spots to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Times Square is a quintessential New York City location. We also chose this site as Times Square represents the energetic lifestyle we live on a day to day basis. Bright lights, tall buildings and tons of people encompass the world we live in.

My first look was a white silk Diane von Furstenberg dress. I wore a black Balenciaga dress in her second look with Christian Louboutin shoes. Jonathan wore a Charles Tyrwhitt button down with a charcoal Theory blazer and jeans.

The session was extremely fun! We really connected with Jenny, our photographer.  As the shoot progressed, we just became more and more comfortable with her. It was great to be able to relax and just have fun.

From the Bride… Being married, although I have only been married for just a short time, is the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to me. Our wedding day could not have been a more perfect start to our marriage. I am from a small town in Tennessee, my husband is from Kansas City, and we met in Dallas, Texas. I have always known I wanted a smaller destination wedding, and luckily my husband and I were on the same page. Picking a place to get married was easy for us. We both love the mountains, and we could not think of a more beautiful representation of God’s creation to be the setting for our wedding. We decided on an outdoor ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch. After the venue decision, all the other details fell right into place.

I feel our wedding was a true representation of both my husband and me. Everything was clean, simple, and traditional. It was hard for me to not be married in a church, so my first decision was to try to make our outdoor ceremony feel as spiritual as a church would. I decided to use a large cross, made out of Aspen bark, draped in beautiful soft all white flowers, and to be set at the end of the aisle. My vision for the cross and flowers played into every other detail of the wedding. The wedding day itself was full of anxiety and stress. We woke up to rain, cold temperatures, and even some hail. The ceremony location changed three times throughout the day. Miraculously, about an hour before our scheduled ceremony time, the clouds were moved away and the sun came shining down on us to have everything just as planned. The sunshine moved right in to the reception where our band put on a fabulous show!!!! Everyone danced the night away!

Overall, our wedding weekend was exactly what Neil and I had pictured. All of our guests traveled from far distances to see us commit our lives to one another. It was incredibly special to have all of our friends and family in one place. A big thanks to my talented and fabulous photographer Sharon. She captured every memory! Thank you to all of our loving and caring family and friends for making our wedding possible!

South Palm Beach Wedding by J Morgan Flowers

I’m a lover of all things beautiful blooms, so when I first laid my eyes on this darling South Palm Beach affair captured by the amazing Jessica Lorren Organic Photography, I could barely contain my glee.  Yes, this English garden-themed soiree is boasting some of the most gorgeous florals I have ever seen created by J Morgan Flowers… and from the vibrant bouquets to the lovely centerpieces, it’s almost too pretty to believe.  Plus, when you add to that a lovely traditional setting and an uber-sweet bride and groom, it all makes for one very pretty Monday.  So, say hello to this fabulous new week and join me in the gallery for more!

From J Morgan FlowersFrom the moment I first met the bride,  Anna, it was friendship at first sight. She exuded fun, laughter and love. As you can see from the photos its impossible not to find her smile contagious!!

Coming from the Ukraine in her teens she had always dreamed of an English garden wedding, full of colors, smells and playful just like her and her Groom, Brad. We created her English garden using peonies, garden roses, ranaculus, hydrangeas, hanging amarnthus, stock, hydrangeas and curly willow wisping throughout.

The chuppah for the traditional Jewish ceremony was created using curly willow draped in a mix of the chosen flowers.

Being the fun couple that they are they let their bridesmaids pick dresses in their favorite color. The flower girl traveled from the Ukraine and only spoke Russian…but nonetheless was the hit of the party and captured everyones heart.

Jessica Lorren was able to capture these moments perfectly and I am sure “The Klines” will always treasure this day!

Rochester Wedding by Tory Williams Photography

Welcome back to another gorgeous week here at SMP New York! We’re totally loving the organic luxe vibe that this pretty fete is putting out there. The burlap, mercury glass, lush florals, and dried lavender are all working together to create the most casually elegant day ever. Tory Williams Photography captured the day to perfection and trust me when I say that you have to check out the rest of the pretty in our new, fancy gallery!

Click here to see entire image gallery!

From the bride…Our inspiration for our wedding was “organic luxe.” We wanted to incorporate as many natural elements as possible; from burlap runners, gnarly branches, river rocks, sprigs of dried lavender as favors, potted orchid plants wrapped in moss, to the many cascading floral arrangements. Our venue captured the perfect amount of relaxed elegance – we wanted our guests to feel like they were at a really fun party, like a much grander version of the parties we love having in our home with family and friends!! People left asking if we could do it again the following weekend!
