Cape Cod Wedding at Wychmere Beach Club from First Mate Photo Co.

Growing up, I didn’t dream of a wedding with ballrooms and big gowns – I dreamt of a wedding that looked exactly like this one. Where the salt air never stops touching your nose, and where beach and chic happily introduce themselves to each other. So when I stumbled on this beauty captured to complete perfection by  First Mate Photo Co, I couldn’t help but be in love with every moment. And you can see why right here.

From the Bride… Planning a wedding on Cape Cod was a year’s worth of hard work, countless weekend trips, and DIY projects. The day came together beautifully thanks to our fantastic vendors and the help of our loving parents, families and friends. When Mike and I were in high school, I took him to the Cape one summer because I wanted him to know the great place I considered my second home. When it came time to pick a venue, we had considered several places on the Cape but Wychmere Harbor stuck out amongst the rest. It was a peaceful setting, the reception room was literally built on a dock and I felt that it encompassed the New England feel I wanted all of our guests to experience. We were not focused on a specific theme but rather the spring season and all of the natural beauty that comes with it.

The wedding day was incredible. We had family members that traveled across the country and from Europe to celebrate with us. The church ceremony, service, food and decor were all great. The most amazing feeling we took from the day was the emphasis in both the ceremony and reception for all of our guests to feel like one family. We have so much to be thankful for. Looking back at the photos gives an appreciation of the simplicity of the day from the peonies, to a barefoot walk on beach. It was a weekend we will never forget and we are so very blessed to have each other to spend our lives with.

DIY Destination Wedding at the R.J. Reynolds Mansion from Virgil Bunao

Virgil Bunao can do no wrong in my book. The second I see his name alongside a wedding, I get more excited than I care to admit. And it’s because of weddings like this one. Weddings that started with the sweetest of love stories, and then topped off with a fête filled with heart all captured so beautifully I could cry. It’s image after image of pure lovely, and it’s all waiting for you right here.

From the Bride… We met on a spring day in 2008 thanks to Duncan, a dog who decided to have an adventure and escape his yard. He went to the park where he found Allie and her dog Bowman. Allie called the number on his tag, Bernard picked up his dog and later that night asked for a date. Not straying far from the theme of adventure, 2 years later Bernard proposed at the summit of Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park.

We share a love for the coast and exploring unique, obscure islands. Allie is a graduate of Clemson and since college she has always wanted an intimate southern wedding. Sapelo, a barrier island in the Emerald Isles, with it’s pristine beaches, towering oak trees, Spanish moss and 19th century R.J. Reynolds mansion was the perfect place to host our wedding. Because our families and friends were coming from all over the U.S, and Bernard’s immediate family from Belgium, we envisioned a place where we could celebrate and be together for an entire weekend. The island proved to have some logistical challenges. It is accessible by ferry only twice a day and is undeveloped with no stores or hotels, however this was a draw for us – we had the place to ourselves! Our families filled the mansion to capacity while the rest of our guests stayed in nearby Hogg Hammock – one of the last remaining Geechee communities in the U.S.
Our wedding took place on April 22nd – Earth Day.

We wanted a DIY wedding that reflected our love for the outdoors, each other and family. Together we crafted almost everything for the big day: summer evenings were spent making blueberry lemon and peach lavender jams, our fingers were stained for days after making welcome bags, hours were spent picking out our font for stationery and even more hours photo-shopping and printing! Props to the groom who even sewed all the table runners and napkins from a piece of linen fabric we liked. Allie’s mom took the role of wedding planner, complete with color-coded folders and her trusty binder. The woman knows how to antique! She tirelessly searched for the gorgeous milk glass and depression glass dishes that decked out our desert bar. Having a DIY wedding made the planning and decision making enjoyable – it was a crash course on a lifetime of compromise and communication.

We wanted the style and feel of our wedding to be simple and natural with a southern twist. The Mansion was the perfect backdrop – the grounds are gorgeous featuring a lagoon pool, old oaks draped with Spanish moss and a patio ornamented with period tiles. The design, architecture and history created the ambiance – all we had to do was add the personalized details. One of the favorites was our take on the “guest book” that Bernard painted using watercolors. We wanted to dress up the mansion’s living room since it was attached to the patio where our reception took place. Three generations of family wedding photos, topiaries and moss-covered monograms added the personal touch we were looking for.

We decided to say our vows in the morning, in front of the pool, under the moss covered oaks and couldn’t have had better luck when it came to avoiding an imminent storm. Guests were seated to an instrumental version of Ella Fitzgerald’s “Dream A Little Dream of Me”. Allie walked down the aisle to her brother singing and playing guitar to Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” for which he had modified the lyrics for the occasion. The intimate ceremony was officiated by Allie’s campus minister and long time friend, Tim Willis. The reception included fried chicken and other traditional southern sides such as green beans, squash casserole and corn bread. Bellini’s were served for the toasts in honor of Georgia’s peaches and the family’s Italian heritage. Sweet tea was sipped from mason jars. The dessert table included cookies and chocolates hand delivered from Belgium by the Bernard’s parents as well as several cakes, candies and peach cobbler. Guests spent the afternoon playing games on the lawn, hiking the nature trail or combing nearby Nanny Goat Beach for sand dollars. The celebration was capped with a birthday hoedown for the bride in the Mansion’s third floor Circus Room, lasting late into the night.

Our inspiration and goal was all about the intent of creating an intimate island escape weekend for everyone. We wanted to keep it unique to us but at the same time create something everyone could enjoy. In an attempt to stay unique and true to us we made a promise to each other that any idea we found, we would put our own spin on it. One of our favorites was the idea of a directional sign. We wanted to recognize how far everyone traveled to be with us on our wedding day so we made a post that had every state guests traveled from, including the distance in miles from Sapelo Island. We got a lot of compliments on how special it was that we made everything ourselves, and even more “thank-you’s” for such a fun, laid back weekend. That was the best gift we could have received!

Looking back on the weekend, it’s hard to choose a favorite moment. For Allie, walking down the aisle was pretty amazing. She remembers the amount of love and happiness she felt walking toward Bernard while seeing everyone who was there to support and celebrate their new life together. We really enjoyed the toasts as well – it was touching to hear how much thought and love went into the wishes that our guests had for us. Finally, our rehearsal dinner was a great time-we invited everyone who was already on the island for the wedding to the Nanny Goat Beach pavilion and had a traditional low country boil under the stars. Upon returning to the mansion we danced, bowled and played pool in the pirate-themed basement.

Vancouver Wedding Inspiration from Kunioo + Sunflower Florist

They say rain on your wedding day is good luck, and whether that is true or just something a smart planner made up for the bride with tears in her eyes, we adore rain. It makes for pictures like the very last one here (stunning Kunioo, really). Sunflower Florist gathered up some beautiful blooms and a few good friends and put together a some absolutely gorgeous rainy wedding inspiration!

From the planner… Planning an outdoor wedding in Vancouver, BC without a Plan B is always a risky affair due to the rainforest climate we live in. This style shoot was the perfect example of this. Due to unpredictable weather forecasts we decided to opt for our alternative location and in the end it all turned out even more stunning than we had ever imagined.

This shoot was a collaboration of talented Vancouver vendors to create a simple yet playful approach to an indoor garden setting using a soft but bright colour palette of yellow and lavender and to showcase the chemistry between the couple. Our alternative location: The Secret Garden green house was the perfect setting to reflect the garden theme we were envisioning. Our lemonade stand, that was custom made for this shoot, was the focal point in which every detail originated from.

To create a more causal setting, we decided on a floor length ivory linen with placemats and three floral arrangements complimented with lemons and surrounding tea lights along with a lemonade signature cocktail and striped lavender straws. The calligraphy on the stationery brought in a sense of romance that tied in beautifully with the corset flowing dress the bride wore complemented by stunning sparkles.

Our models, Katie and Ian are newly engaged and were a pleasure to work with. We could not be happier for them and look forward to their upcoming wedding! With their love and playful personalities we were able to capture many gorgeous moments.

This was a fun day full of laughs, fun, romance and delicious sweets; I am so happy with the end result.

A Day at the Getty from Katie Parra Photography

I’m no stranger to art galleries and museums as I’ve had the pleasure of frequenting a handful in my lifetime. But the Getty is one that I’ve yet to visit and, as a result, it completely and totally eludes me. With so much to take in, I’m sure it’s not uncommon to feel overwhelmed upon arrival. Lucky for us, Getty-frequenter extraordinaire and talented photographer, miss Katie Parra, has agreed to share her wisdom on how to tackle this utterly unbelievable space. For more inspiration, head on over to the gallery!

From Katie Parra…

COST. During my college years in Santa Barbara, CA I used to drive down to Los Angeles on the weekends and spend an entire day at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Situated on a hill on the north end of the 405 the Getty has expansive views of LA and the ocean (on a clear non-foggy day that is). The best part of the museum is that it’s free! You pay anywhere from $10-15 dollars for parking depending on the day – but that’s it. For any struggling college student that’s a bargain!

WHERE TO START. I’ve put together what I believe to be the perfect Getty itinerary. So follow me step by step as I guide you through the magical world of J. Paul Getty. You start off by boarding charming white trams that carry you up the steep hill into which the Getty is built. The Getty has several subterranean levels and only extends two stories above the grade of the natural landscape. Here is a link that talks about how the Getty was built and information about its architect Richard Meier. When you exit the tram you are confronted with the most amazing off white, Italian travertine-textured stone building. The museum itself is a work of art. It can be a bit overwhelming at first but there are friendly volunteers stationed all over the grounds to help you find your way.

THE MUSEUM. The Getty houses European paintings, drawings, sculpture, illuminated manuscripts, decorative arts, and European and American photographs. After you climb the beautiful travertine steps you will first enter the museum entrance hall. There you will find free maps as well as the museum store and coat/bag check area. Check your coat, grab your map and then follow the sound of the beautiful, serene fountain that awaits you in the main courtyard. If you have a smart phone or iPad you can follow the self-guided tours of each exhibit available on the Getty website.

THE NORTH & EAST PAVILIONS. The first building we are going to is the North Pavilion. This pavilion houses paintings, sculptures, decorative arts and illuminate manuscripts made before the 1700’s. Start on the first level and work your way up to the second. The manuscripts are my favorite part of this pavilion. Then follow the second story bridge to the East Pavilion. This pavilion houses paintings, sculptures and decorative arts from the 1600’s to the 1800’s. The paintings are incredible but I find myself endlessly lingering at all of the sculptures. Once you’ve exited on the plaza level you will be greeted by another amazing fountain that combines both architectural and landscape elements. There are colorful potted plants and walls of ivy that lure you to the back deck where you will find panoramic views of the city and of the Pacific Ocean.

THE SOUTH PROMONTORY & PAVILION. Before entering the South Pavilion, take a few minutes to explore the South Promontory which features a re-creation of a desert landscape and cactus garden. By introducing drought-tolerant plants and efficient irrigation the Getty has cut their water use by more than 30 percent. Beautiful and environmentally friendly! From the cactus garden enter the South Pavilion on the plaza level. Working your way up to the second level you will see paintings and decorative arts from the 1600-1800’s. This pavilion is my favorite! The furniture and still life paintings are a particular highlight for me. I sometimes find myself making a beeline straight for this pavilion and spending my whole day drooling over all of the opulent furnishings. It is so much fun!

SKYLIGHTS. Another great aspect of the Getty that you will notice is that on the second level of all the pavilions is natural daylight streaming through computer controlled skylights. They have a cooling and warming system using artificial lights. These skylights maximize the natural light in each room and cut down on the amount of electricity used to light rooms….ingenious and efficient!

THE WEST PAVILION. The West Pavilion is accessible from a second story bridge from the South Pavilion. The West Pavilion houses paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings and photographs that were made after the 1800’s. Here you will find Monet’s, Van Gogh’s as well as a current photography exhibition called “In Focus: Ed Ruscha”.

EATING. Whew…are you exhausted yet? You just saw a whole lot of inspiring and jaw dropping art collected over the centuries. I think it’s time to get some lunch! There are several options for dining at the Getty but I highly recommend packing a picnic lunch and eating alfresco. You can enjoy the Garden Terrace or bring a blanket and find a nice spot in the garden. On my last trip we packed a light picnic of fresh fruit, a blackberry tart and scone, dried fruit, walnuts, dates and the most amazing lavender shortbread bars – all from Sweet Salt Food Shop in Toluca Lake. We bought a chilled bottle of California white wine from the cafe as well. One thing for sure though – where ever you choose to sit and eat you will have one amazing view!

GARDENS. After lunch stroll through the winding pathways of the central garden created by artist Robert Irwin. The bougainvillea arbors are stunning and quintessential Californian. There is a stream that starts at the north end of the garden, winds down a beautifully shaded path, and ends with a cascading waterfall that flows into the circular garden pool. In the pool there is a spectacular maze of over 400 azalea plants. There are over 500 varieties of plant material used in the landscaping of the central garden some of which change with the seasons.

To the west of the central garden there is a sculpture garden on the Lower Terrace. Umbrellas are provided at no charge for rainy days or just to stay protected from the sun. One of my favorite images in my home is a black and white, panoramic photograph of people exploring the central garden on a rainy foggy day and everyone is carrying black umbrellas. Even in bad weather the Getty is a magical place to be.

EXHIBITIONS PAVILION. Follow the winding path along the stream up to the north end of the central garden. There you will find the entrance to our last stop on this tour, the Exhibitions Pavilion. You can climb the stairs or take the elevator to the upper level where there is a constantly changing exhibition space.

CONSERVATION. Conservation is an integral part of the Getty’s goal to “exhibit and interpret the collections and preserve them for the enjoyment and education of future generations”. They have an impressive Research Institute on the grounds which include a lecture hall, laboratory for twenty five conservators and four conservation departments.

For any artist the Getty is a place to recharge and get inspired. From the amazing art inside to the incredible architecture, fountains and gardens outside. I never feel like I plan enough time. Someday I might just pitch a tent in the circular garden and refuse to leave! Plan on a whole day if possible but I’d recommend a minimum of four hours to ensure a proper visit. In 2006 the Getty museum expanded and opened the Getty Villa in Malibu which houses an extensive collection of Roman, Greek and Etruscan antiquities. The Villa is at the top of my “must see” list for my next visit to LA. I encourage anyone planning a trip to Southern California to stop by the Getty. It truly is a magical and inspiring place!

Pippin Hill Wedding From Easton Events + Jen Fariello Photography

Pippin Hill is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite venues. It’s the perfect balance of Southern elegance and rustic charm, making for a beauty-filled backdrop like you wouldn’t believe. And the latest object of my Pippin Hill obsession? This utterly gorgeous Easton Events’ wedding with to die for florals by Southern Blooms, all captured by the one and only Jen Fariello Photography. It’s a little slice of wedding heaven, and there’s much more to be swooned sitting right here.

From the Bride, Loren… Jake is a resident at UAB in Birmingham, and I am an attorney. We met while I was in law school and he was in medical school in the grove at Ole Miss at football game. Jake’s childhood best friend Camille and one my best friends in law school (and also a bridesmaid) introduced us! We had so many mutual friends but had never met & we clicked right away! Jake proposed two years later at my house in Oxford, MS. He told me to go grab shrimp so that we could make one of our fav dishes, shrimp risotto. I was supposed to call him before I left but I actually forgot to call him so he waited outside my house for 2 hours waiting for me to leave….however, he missed me leaving so I ruined the proposal surprise!! After he proposed, he told me to hurry up and get dressed because both of our parents were on their way into town. It was perfect–I told him before we got engaged that I didn’t want a big fuss and just wanted to celebrate with our families, which is what we did over several nice bottles of wine!

I went to school at UVA and have so many great memories from Charlottesville. My dad also went there so it is a special place. I attended a friend’s wedding at Keswick before I met Jake and knew that when it was my time, I would get married in cville too. After meeting and falling in love with Jake, we went up to Charlottesville for a visit and he fell in love with the place too. There is just something special in the Charlottesville air. Once we got engaged, I immediately called a college friend, Augusta Cole of Easton Events, because I knew I wanted her to do my wedding. She recommended Pippin Hill. We booked it sight unseen because the ambiance and scenery was perfect. Plus, Jake and I are wine lovers so what better place to get married than at a vineyard.

Our inspiration was a tailored european garden or english garden. We chose a palate of the palest pink, gray, and dark green. We used beautiful full bloom pale pink and white florals mixed with the dark greens of boxwood and ivy as well a beautiful stone gray color for the printed suite and containers. Our wedding was intended to be classically elegant with a touch of whimsy – I would say the lacey calligraphy, printed details, cocktail table linens, and loose, romantic florals expressed that touch of whimsy…We tried to incorporate a lot of southern traditions in our wedding-I am from Memphis and Jake is from Jackson, MS. We did a cake pull before Jake and I cut the cake where each bridesmaid pulled out a charm from our cake–each charm had a special meaning and the meaning was placed on a card so that each bridesmaid could keep it.

I carried my deceased grandparents wedding rings down the aisle with me tied to my bouquet as well as my living grandmother’s handkerchief, my something old. My something blue was Song of Solomon 3:4 stitched into my dress in blue. We had two specialty cocktails…mine was the champagne with lavender to compliment the lavender that was tossed by our friends and family after we left the church. Jake’s was the Sazerac, his favorite drink. We also handed out “late night” grab-n-go snacks, croque monsieurs, as people boarded the buses to head home.

Jake’s grooms cake was a chocolate cake in the shape of a case of wine, with all of our favorite bottles. It looked so real that some tried to pick up the bottles to take it with them! Our band played all of our favorite songs and lead the crowd in the Good Ole Song as well as Ole Miss’ Hotty Toddy cheer. They also played Walking in Memphis, my dads request, which was a Memphis crowd favorite! Some of my favorite touches before the big day was our wedding invitations. We had my family crest on the top of it, beautiful calligraphy, and different colored paper for the return address envelope and card, along with vintage stamps. Some of my favorite photos are from our sparkler departure, as well as the ones in front of our vintage car! All of the photographs captured what a beautiful night it was, all thanks to a great photographer & burying the bourbon!

Florida Keys Wedding from Clau Photography

The Florida Keys are a magical place; a sort of “time stands still” paradise made for marrying.  It’s the kind of paradise where laid-back elegance and breathtaking backdrops reign supreme… and where darling duos such as these two sweeties tie the knot surrounded by lush blooms from Vivian Colls, a whole lot of happiness and light, airy hues.  See it all captured by Clau Photography right here.

From the Bride… Since our wedding was going to take place in the Florida Keys I wanted to make sure to use bright summer colors and materials that would be light and airy so that people wouldn’t get hot. Also there is a Polish tradition to have the bridesmaids wear dresses in a color that is close to white so that bad spirits get confused and distracted from the bride! The decoration was inspired by Pinterest and Etsy and I fell I love with the rustic burlap, lace plus a laid back beach theme, so I combined them. For flowers, we went for a natural Miami look: Creme de la creme roses, white mini calla lilies, white hydrangeas, blush chablis spray roses, Dusty Miller, silver dollar eucalyptus and cream hypericum berries.

From Clean Plate PicturesMargot and Brian’s wedding was an excellent way to start the year. They had a really sweet and relaxed day, with close friends officiating the ceremony. So stylish yet simple. There were fun details like fake tattoos, a candy bar and delicious doughnuts for dessert. The only thing that was missing was their adorable pup Stevie (who we met at their engagement shoot last year.) These two are so lovely and we wish them all the luck in the world.

SMP Texas Welcomes Our Advertisers + A DISCOUNT!

You know what I love about Texas Hill Country?  Well, other than the whole “beyond beautiful, perfect for marrying” thing?  The venues.  The drop-dead gorgeous, rustic meets elegant venues that really turn your Big Day into a show-stopping way to celebrate.  Venues like the amazing Thurman’s Mansion and the stunning Pecan Grove, two seriously awesome locales from the talented teams at The Salt Lick BBQ and Texas Wine Country Catering & Events.  A pair of venues that mix lush vineyards with breathtaking views (Thurman’s Mansion) and rustic goodness with downright glamorous details (Pecan Grove).  Just take a look below…

Thurman’s Mansion is a “Classic Texas meets Vineyard Chic” locale with breathtaking views of the Texas Hill Country.  Overlooking lush vineyards, the venue was built from limestone quarried from the surrounding lands and modeled to look like a southern, plantation-style home.  Choose to hold your ceremony outdoors with options in front of the vineyards or accommodate up to 180 guests indoors.

Pecan Grove is the perfect “Rustic Barn Glam” venue surrounded by majestic Pecan Trees.  Situated along a bank of Onion Creek, hold your outdoor ceremony in front of a waterfall or inside in a glass-enclosed space with air conditioning that still “feels” like it’s outside under the trees. Pecan Grove can accommodate up to 350 guests indoors.

Both venues are owned by the legendary Salt Lick BBQ. Salt Lick BBQ is famous for its mouthwatering BBQ & signature family-style all-you-can-eat BBQ dinner, while Texas Wine Country Catering focuses on farm-to-table, local ingredients & seasonal, fresh menus.

Book now and receive $495 off the venue rental fee at Thurman’s Mansion or Pecan Grove for Friday and Saturdays during the months of January + February and July + August of 2014.

Bohemian Inspiration from Jessamyn Harris + Daisy Rose Floral Design

You know what’s amazing?  A bohemian meets romantic photo shoot set against the breathtaking backdrop that is Sonoma, California; one that is dripping with gorgeous details from Daisy Rose Floral Design and captured ever-so-perfectly by Jessamyn Harris.  That’s what.  And when you combine all of that pretty with some cute farm animals, a literal cheese cake from The Epicurean Connection and bouquets that will take your breath away, it’s more than amazing.  It’s epically awesome.  Click here for soooo much more.

From Jessamyn HarrisDaisy Rose (such a wonderful name for a florist!) and I wanted to put together an inspiration shoot that felt styled but unfussy, to celebrate the beauty of Sonoma County in its wild, springtime glory. We agreed on the beautiful painting “Lady of Shalott” as a (very) loose inspiration. The painting is beautiful in that it emanates a verdant, moody romanticism, and the palette is somehow colorful and rich, yet austere. The Lady, dressed in bridal white, floats downstream towards Camelot, which has enchanted her, and while no one could claim the story as a happy one, we loved the wildness of the fairytale scene, and wanted to see what that would turn up when filtered through a more cheery sensibility for a wedding inspiration!

Daisy created beautiful floral headpieces, bouquets, and table arrangements bursting with dreamy colors. The location, on a stunning, expansive property in Sonoma called Sky Farm, was miles from any cell phone reception, and modern life felt very distant as we rambled around creeks, up hills, through meadows of wildflowers, and down dim pathways. Although we kept the palette and dream-like quality of the painting in mind, we made sure it reflected our team’s Sonoma/San Francisco style. So the dresses had a bohemian charm to them, without shouting “bridal!”, and we added touches of sparkling sophisticated sashes and locally made jewelry to fancy it up a bit – plus chickens, dogs, a caravan wagon, a boat, and Sound of Music like hills to keep it grounded. (This is Sonoma, after all!)

The table was styled simply, with painterly light, antique and shining silver, and fruit and a cheese cake. I also used this shoot to test out my new Mamiya 645 AFD film camera, and it felt so great to be back to shooting Fuji color negative film, one of my very first photography loves!

Vow Renewal Party from Orange Turtle Photography

Earlier in the week we delved into some of our unique fashion trends we’ve spotted tucked inside the weddings of SMP and I’m thinking this gorgeous Mrs. and her floral Badgley Mischka dress need to be added to that list. What better time to go bold and rock a print then for a vowel renewal to your one and only? But aside from the beautiful details DIY’d by the Bride or the layer of yummy florals by Marion Curson Floral Design, is a lovely and real story of marriage and its ups and downs. Read the Bride’s story for more and prepare to get lost in this beautiful day captured by Orange Turtle Photography. See more right here!

Aren’t these two the sweetest? And you haven’t even pushed play on their film by HWu Studios. It’s so worthy of a watch (or three). Have a look…

From the Bride…Five years may seem like a short time to renew our vows, but for us, there was so much to celebrate.  We almost didn’t make it.  We hit a breaking point in the third year of our marriage, when things got so bad that we seriously considered separation.  As a last resort, we tried couples therapy.  Through some breakthrough moments where God really met us, a lot of hard work, and the support of our loved ones, we came such a long way that it only seemed natural to celebrate this milestone.

The day was as much about our journey as it was about honoring our friends and thanking them for the ways they supported us.  We held our intimate gathering up in the Malibu mountains at Rancho del Cielo, a small cottage where the owners still reside.  It had an intimate backyard feel yet was elegant with its breathtaking views of the coast.

The inspiration and subtle theme for our event was around good stories.  In the best stories, there always comes a point when you don’t know if the protagonist is going to make it, and the journey of how they do is what makes the story.  We felt like that has been a picture of our marriage.  The subtle theme lent itself well to the overall look and feel we were going for – rustic, literary, and rich in love and depth.  We brought it to life in the details: the design of our paper goods was reminiscent of a book page; actual pages from classic novels were incorporated into our signage; and our centerpieces featured classics or books on relationships.  As the goal was to honor and thank our guests, we also wrote individual thank-you notes and handmade each favor.  The men received cufflinks featuring handpicked quotes we knew they would appreciate, and the women received a personalized necklace.

Everything about the day was perfect.  We felt so blessed to be surrounded by a community who loved and supported us through the toughest of times.  In a way, the day was so much sweeter than our wedding day, because even though we know how hard marriage can be, we were still choosing to say yes.

A Manhattan Rooftop Engagement Party from Clare Langan

With a focus on a simple, yet well-curated menu, this casual rooftop engagement party is one for the books. Set against the Manhattan skyline, I truly couldn’t imagine a more worthy backdrop for a celebration of this kind. Blackberry gin cocktails to toast with, a warm-weather feast to fill bellies, and two people, very much in love set the stage for what is sure to be a picturesque evening. Designed by Clare Langan and photographed by Pill Photography, there’s plenty more inspiration right here in the gallery.

From Clare… Food was the focus at this styled engagement party shoot. The couple loves to cook together, craft homemade cocktails and entertain friends at home. An intimate rooftop gathering was just the thing to make the big city seem smaller.

As a chef and food stylist, I believe food should look as good as it tastes. The inspiration for the evening was the lush fruits of summer: deep, rich blackberries, juicy peaches, nectarines and apricots. Vintage peach and blackberry stamps greeted guests on our kraft and cream calligraphy paper goods. The sweetness carried over into the floral design, with branches of young blueberries, blush hyacinths, hydrangea and Moulin Rouge astrantia.

A mix of vintage and modern pieces allowed each dish to shine. We loved the antique ‘berry bowls’ from Little Vintage Rentals. Each guest was gifted a bottle of Lemon Simple Syrup, delicious in cocktails or iced tea, to enjoy all summer long.

The Menu:
Blackberry gin and tonic
Charred summer vegetable flatbreads
Arugula with grilled peaches, Parma ham & toasted pistachios (see recipe)
Organic chicken-citrus skewers
Heirloom tomatoes & fresh mozzarella with balsamic reduction
Berry mascarpone tart
Lemon & almond meringue cookies

Wisconsin Camp Engagement Session from Emily Steffen Photography

Oh my. This is the kind of engagement shoot that is made of laughter and love, and features so many smiles, you just can’t help but smile right along. The couple at center is my favorite kind – young at heart, so in love, and beautiful as all get out. Captured by Emily Steffen, the gallery will bring you back to your camp days, in the very best way.

From the photographer… Laurie and Jon wanted outdoors, fun, simple and full of whimsy, and Camp Wandawega was THE MOST PERFECT SPOT for them to share some memories of their summer engagement! It’s a Vintage-Camp-meets-Lands-End-meets-Moonrise-Kingdon (the movie) and it’s AMAZING! Laurie is a crazy talented photographer and Jon is an equally talented musician. It was like stepping back to the years of summer camp while we shot the whole afternoon….swinging in the big oak tree, running through the paths and jumping in the lake fully clothed! YAY for Laurie and Jon getting married!

Grandma’s Waffles

In the spirit of our ongoing contest, I thought it would be fun to share one of my, personal, favourite recipes right from my own grandmothers pantry. Now, this is a bit of a special treat as my grandma is borderline famous for her waffles (isn’t that such a grandmotherly thing to be famous for?) To the point that my friends legitimately refer to her as “Grandma Waffles” . They’re light as air on the inside, and crispy on the out. In one word: perfection.

And when the timing is right, she cooks down wild blueberries, picked straight from the forest that lines our cottage, to pour on top. It’s basically my version of heaven.

Grandmas WafflesMy grandmother's world famous waffle recipe. It can't be beat.

Punta de Mita Wedding from The Dazzling Details

Weddings that involve toes in the sand and South of the Border sunshine are some of my absolute favorites. Because who doesn’t love a vacay/ wedding fiesta? I’m thinking no one. And this installment is particularly heavy on the awesome. It’s ghost chairs on the beach and a million and one fun design ideas crafted by The Dazzling Details and photographed by Jen Philips. Have a look here for so much more!

Colors

From the Bride…While on vacation in Punta De Mita, Brian and I made a visit to Casa Tres Soles and immediately knew that our dream wedding would be at this sensational Villa. Once we had the venue in place I came across The Dazzling Details and was positive that they would create a stylish, romantic and unforgettable day for us.  More than anything I wanted our wedding to be a reflection of not only our love for each other but our love for our guests as well… So many people were traveling such a great distance and I wanted everyone to have the time of their lives.

On the morning of our wedding we woke up at Casa Tres Soles and could hardly contain ourselves…. Brian and his friends jumped into the ocean for a morning surf, and my seven best friends and I started to get ready. From our Villa suite I could spy on the progress of the wedding design… each time I took a peek, I was ecstatic with the transformation. I don’t know how The Dazzling Details did it, but they made this picturesque property even more breathtaking.

Guests were greeted with margaritas and mingled under the palapa to the tunes of Frank Sinatra played in the background.  Once escorted down to the beach, our friends and family kicked of their shoes to get comfortable for the ceremony.  After we said our “I dos” we headed back up to the lawn, and as a surprise for Brian (we got married on his Birthday) I had a “Birthday Burro” waiting to give him a little ride! The Burro, Andale Pancho, was a huge hit and our guests all took turns being photographed with him. Guests enjoyed spectacular views of the ocean as they dined on the most amazing food I have ever had at a wedding. The house chef prepared Ahi Salad, Steak and Shrimp and what I was told over and over again was “The best Chile Relleno of all time.”

Throughout the ceremony and dinner there was a gorgeous detail around every corner from the ceremony chandelier to the table settings with succulents and chevron name cards.  The wedding was more than I could have dreamed of.  When my new husband and I took to the floor for our first dance I was BLOWN AWAY by the marquee “Dance” sign that hung in the palapa.  The vibe was definitely set for a party full of dancing (and swimming) that would carry on until the early morning!

Surrounded by our family, friends and an abundance of love and happiness, we were both in awe of the way that our wedding was so “US.” I couldn’t have been more pleased with everything The Dazzling Details did and more thankful to Jen Philips for capturing every moment (including ones I missed and am still discovering!) so that we can always remember what a beautiful weekend we were so privileged to have.
