Illinois Farm Wedding from Photography by Katy Carlson

People always ask me what really makes a wedding shine on SMP. My answer is always soul. When a wedding has so much heart you can feel it through the computer screen, that’s when I know it will resonate with everyone that passes by the pages of SMP today. This wedding from Photography by Katy Carlson has soul and then some, and it only takes one look at this gallery to see precisely what I’m talking about. See it all here.

From KatyKayla and Ethan’s wedding was inspired by Bilbo Baggin’s going away party from the “The Fellowship of the Ring”, except without the silly costumes. The venue could not have been more perfect with a miniature forested area for the ceremony, a grassy area for dancing and a tent for feasting. Upon arriving the guests were asked to light and hang a mason jar in the trees but the details didn’t stop there. Kids and grown-ups alike left their touch on a painting canvas and a canopy-tent decorated like a living room beckoned you to leave a note of advice to the Bride and Groom.

While some details were meticulously planned, others were left to unfold naturally such as the toasts and the open mic dancing. These spontaneous moments were what truly made the memories that night as they showcased what everyone who loved the couple was able to bring to the table. Following sparklers, the grooms dad even gathered everyone around to tell one of his kids’ favorite “scary stories” while guests cozied on the benches with blankets that had been laid out. This truly blissful day was one that everyone, both young and old, will be remembering for years to come.

From the Groom… Remembering the wedding is a lot like those moments after sleep where you find yourself trying as hard as you can to hold onto the slipping details of a good dream. I remember the feeling of the small of Kayla’s back when we kissed- delicate and a reminder, as well as a motivator for the sense of pride and protection I still feel. I remember the look of pride in my Father’s eyes, and loves in my new Mother-in-law’s. The lanterns reminded me of something out of Peter Pan, colored glowing mason jars suspended from trees like fireflies.

DIY Texas Wedding from Abi Q Photography

I love this Bride. Of course, I love her Groom too – but this Bride is the kind of girl who just sparkles without even trying. A girl who whips up an absolutely lovely affair as if it’s second nature. She is adorable and gorgeous and talented – and her wedding captured by Abi Q Photography reflects just that. See the entire day here.

From the Bride… My husband and I were high school sweethearts. I had a crush on him since I was 13, we started dating when I was 15 and dated for 6 years before we got married. He was my first boyfriend and my first kiss too!

All of the wedding decorations are homemade — I used to work at Anthropologie, so I got some of my girlfriends together and we made the hanging banner over the aisle with my friend Jen who already had the papier-mâché flowers from a past Anthro display window. My sister and maid of honor made all of the bouquets with wholesale flowers. Also for the bridesmaid dresses, I just gave them a color and told them to pick a dress that fit their body and style… I loved that touch of each of their personalities!

Playa del Carmen Destination Wedding from W&E Photographie

It seems almost crazy to say it, but I’ve never actually been to Mexico.  Sure, I’ve been close… I frequent San Diego often and have even spotted it’s beautiful beaches from a whale watching boat, but I’ve never actually stepped foot on those golden sands and soaked in those paradise-like rays of sun.  I know, I know. It’s something that needs to be rectified sooner rather than later, especially since I spend my days soaking in beautiful weddings like this breathtaking Playa del Carmen soiree; an affair so pretty, it makes you want to pack those bags and catch the first flight South.  See it all captured by W&E Photographie in the full gallery.

From the Bride… Alvin proposed to me in Playa del Carmen, Mexico during a vacation trip and we knew right from the start that we always wanted to have a destination wedding. We debated on where to have the wedding, because my extended family was in Argentina but decided that there was no better place to say “I do” than Mexico. We checked out a couple of resorts in Playa del Carmen but as soon as we drove up to Grand Velas, Alvin fell in love with the resort and knew that this was the place where we would share our wedding with family and friends.

As we planned our wedding a couple of key things that were important to each of us were having a Catholic wedding and incorporating Filipino traditions, delicious food, great photographers, and just having fun. As far as the decor of our wedding, I fell in love with a soft pastel look and not choosing colors. The flowers, bridesmaid dresses, and decor of the whole wedding was a mixture of colors with a soft palette. I loved that the girls were able to choose a dress and color that complimented their features. We also put our own personal stamp on the decor by DIY-ing the table numbers, table runners, escort cards, sweetheart table ribbon and added the paper garland (from Etsy) and wooden letters (a gift from a friend).

For our wedding day I wanted to make sure we incorporated loved ones in the ceremony and throughout the wedding day, especially Alvin’s mother. Alvin’s mother, Josefina, passed away from breast cancer in 2004. Josefina Aganon Mencias was a prestigious pediatric doctor from Dillon, South Carolina and to this day she is still honored and remembered by many folks. In the ceremony program there was a dedication to Josefina and my grandmothers who had passed away. There was also a special locket attached to my bouquet, and inside that locket was a picture of Alvin and his mother right before she was sick. I unfortunately never had the opportunity to meet such a wonderful woman. However, I knew this amazing person was special to Alvin and I wanted to honor her for raising such a great man.

DIY Inspired Wedding in Groton Massachusetts from Julie Surette Photography

New England barn weddings are special. They are cozy and charming, elegant and casual all in the same breath. This pretty at The Barn At Gibbet Hill is the perfect example of why such a soiree will never grown old. Every image from Julie Surette Photography makes me fall in love with barn weddings all over again, and you can see why right here.

Vintage

From the Bride… Norm and I happened upon our wedding venue by total accident! We were traveling around Massachusetts one Saturday, hopping from venue to venue when we passed by The Barn at Gibbet Hill. I was first to notice the actual Barn, Norm was focused on the restaurant (Gibbet Hill Grill) that sits a few feet away. As soon as we entered into the barn we were in love. The cathedral ceilings with exposed beams and hanging iron chandeliers took our breath away. This was where we were going to become husband and wife. Also, The Barns farm to fork method of service was a perfect match to our love of good eats.

The Barn was rustic, warm, relaxed and gave us a clear vision of how we wanted the day to look, feel, and flow. Not wanting to distract from our surroundings, much of the color palette was soft with a vintage/chic feel. The exception being my bridesmaid dresses which were a poppy red. The color red signifies good luck in Chinese culture and was an important piece to include. Red was also incorporated into the bouquets and boutonnieres for an extra pop of color.

Being a big fan of DIY projects, and admittedly being a bit OCD, most of the wedding was created in house. The centerpieces were the first DIY project to tackle. I am extremely lucky that my sister, and amazing MOH, loves to collect glass. Over the past few years she has collected an amazing assortment of vintage glass mason jars, vases, milk containers, bowls, and decanters that we used to create eclectic centerpieces. I placed burlap circles underneath and wrapped the glass in lace, burlap, ribbon, and cloth flower accents. Dried split peas were a last minute addition to give some color and texture.

Other DIY projects included the invitations, programs, card/gift box, guest book, donation cards, and ceremony decorations. There is something really special about putting in your own design on such an important day. Everything was much more meaningful knowing the love, sweat, and tears (only a few!) that had gone into making our day absolutely perfect.

The entire wedding, from ceremony to reception, was laid back, full of laughs, and filled with our most cherished family and friends. It was important for Norm and I to honor both of our families so our ceremony was officiated by an Episcopal priest (a nod to my religion) and was followed by a private Tea Ceremony with Norm’s family, something very special in the Chinese culture.

Watching our two families intertwine so seamlessly was an amazing experience, and one we will never forget. That night, we danced, drank, ate (and ate, and ate) and celebrated the start to our biggest adventure yet!

Madison Georgia Wedding from Simple Color Photography + No Regrets Events

I may not know this darling duo in “real life,” but there is one thing I can say with absolute certainty. This wedding is soooo them.  A little bit classic, a little bit fun-filled and a whole lot of sophisticated everything, it’s the kind of day that is chock-full of elegant moments and bundles upon bundles of personality.  So even though we may only be virtual besties (we sooo are), it’s not hard to see their smiling faces bursting from every second planned to perfection by No Regrets Events and captured by Simple Color Photography.  See them all in the full gallery.

From the Bride… When we started planning our wedding, we tried to decide how we wanted to feel on our wedding day. We agreed that we wanted to be relaxed, traditional, and authentically us. We wanted family to be a big part of the weekend and we wanted a chance to really spend time with our bridal party and out-of-town guests. We answered this desire by doing a semi-destination wedding. We rented out the Farmhouse Inn in Madison, Georgia (a frequent childhood retreat of my family) for the entire bridal party to stay at, and had a ball staying up late around a bonfire the night before and having breakfast together the morning of the wedding. Both of our venues really captured the character of Madison and the feeling we wanted for our day; the church was an 1840’s beauty that touched on my love of history and our deep faith, and the reception hall was a renovated schoolhouse (perfect for a teacher-bride!) with an airy, lovely space for our guests.

The day was steeped in family and tradition, and I wore a traditional Irish engagement ring that has been in my family for generations and has been worn by every bride on her wedding day, as well as a garter made by my lovely grandmother out of my great-grandmother’s lace gown, and carrying the same handkerchief that my mother carried on her wedding day. The love that is carried through our families was displayed in canvas photos of mine and Andy’s parents and grandparents on their wedding days, bringing with them the memory of decades of happiness. The grandparents who are no longer with us were present through candles lit in the church and ornamented with beautiful pendants with their photos.

We love to swing dance together, so we chose Big Band Atlanta to play at the reception, and loved swinging the night away with our guests. When it was time to depart the band played the Georgia Tech fight song (for Andy!) and the University of Georgia fight song (for me!) and our guests chose white-and-gold or red-and-black pom poms to cheer us on our way. It was such a fun way to get our guests involved and have so much fun with the traditional going-away.

We were delighted with how smoothly and beautifully everything went; we were so relaxed and happy on our big day, and we wouldn’t change a thing!

Kauai Wedding from Photography by Jay C Winter

If you were to ask me right now to pack up my bags and my boys, drive me to the airport, and send me anywhere I wanted, I would be on my way to Kauai. And more specifically, to this wedding from Photography by Jay C Winter. I’m not sure it gets more magical than the sweet purples set against that Hawaii sand, especially when you throw in that gorgeous Momental Designs stationery!

From the coordinator… David and Hanieh were Married on the bluffs at the beautiful Saint Regis Princeville Resort in Kauai. They wanted their wedding to be an enchanted, elegant, and romantic event with a bohemian touch. They began their wedding weekend with an incredible welcome party for their guests at Kaliki Kai Vista in Kauai with ocean views and delicious food.

With their love story leading the way, they threw a magical, old world-style wedding where they were married under a Kamani Tree as the sun set on the Hanalei Bay. The mood of the wedding day was set with florals and bridesmaid dresses of lavenders, purples, soft roses, and dreamy pinks. The aisle was lined with lavender rose petals and tall hurricane vases with candles lit in them. Sheet music was formed into paper cones and filled them with rose petals to be thrown as they walked back down the aisle together.

Their beautifully designed programs folded out into fans for their guest to stay cool in the Hawaii heat. 5000 loose orchids were hand strung onto long garlands and hung from the Kamani Tree under which they were married.

Their reception had all sorts of beautiful touches as well with tall and short flower arrangements on the tables and candies and chocolates shipped in from San Francisco. Their wedding favors were melt-in-your-mouth cookies, individually packaged. Dave and Hanieh also had a flash mob dance to “Dirty Bit” during their reception, where almost half of their guests participated!

How to Tie a Bow Tie (or ‘Tie Him Up’) from Annie Dean

Tying a bow tie is one of those things that might not be an every day occurrence, but I can assure you that it will likely come in handy at some point in your life. I mean, everyone should attend a gala every now and again (right?!) Luckily for the bow tie inept amongst us (ahem, myself), we have people like Annie Dean who can walk us through all of these adorable life skills.

step-1Drape the bow tie over his neck, under his collar, leaving one end of the bow tie slightly longer (‘A’) than the other (‘B’).

step-2Slip A under B.

step-3Pull B up and under A, forming a loose overhand knot. Tighten if necessary.

step-4Fold A on top of itself at its widest point to create the first half of the bow.

step-5Lay B on top of A, over the front of the first half of the bow.

step-6Loop B over and behind A, securing A in place, and pull through.

step-7Adjust bow as necessary.

North Carolina Wedding from Abby Jiu + Salt Harbor Designs

Southern weddings have this certain je ne sais quoi that I could stare at all live long day. It’s a good mash-up of classic beauty, romance and a penchant for monograms. Oh do they know their way around a good monogram and this particular affair is ripe with details baring those adorable initials as well as pretty in pink florals by Salt Harbor Designs and a whole boat load of great images snapped by Abby Jiu. Have a look here for even more!

From Abby JiuParlett had just moved to the DC area and her friend wanted to set her up.  She was at first reluctant to her friend’s idea of a blind date, but she agreed.  It was arranged that she would go as this guy’s date to an upcoming wedding.  Parlett started the day off with hesitancy, but the moment she answered the door to meet her date, she knew she had made a good decision.  She didn’t know anyone at the wedding that day, but Greg was super attentive and never let her side. She enjoyed being around his friends too! The couple later married in Wilmington, the hometown of where the bride.

Inspiration for the wedding: Their mutual friend, who works for Lilly Pulitzer, designed their wedding logo and from there Parlett found the inspiration for her Southern wedding.  Putting it on pillows that lined the tented cabanas.  And serving as inspiration for the invitations too.  Parlett and greg chose the venue, City Club, because the tiered garden and grand porch reminded her of the quintessential Southern home.

From the Bride, her favorite moment of the day – “Seeing Greg for the first time was also such a special moment. My dress had been in a bag in our living room for a month leading up to the wedding and I couldn’t wait for him to see me in it. It was one of the hardest things not to show him the dress. When I turned around to see him I remember thinking that he had never looked so handsome!”

From Melissa Wilson PhotographyPedicabs go hand-in-hand with weddings, special events, joyriding on the beach, or just a fun trip to the ball game downtown… and they’re officially my new favorite guilty pleasure. So it was incredible to feature them as the centerpiece in this styled session in Downtown Pensacola!

This was one of those shoots where you feel like lightning has struck… the best kind of lightning. When you know the idea is going to amount to something you’ve been dreaming of, even though you never knew what that dream looked like until you began photographing all the glorious details!

The idea happened one day on a whim. A single text message. And from that day until only one week later, our whimsy became more than we’d hoped for. Some of the best vendors in Pensacola and the surrounding area participated, and everyone brought their very BEST game!

Engaged in New York City from Mikkel Paige Photography

New York City engagements have to be some of my favorite. The city provides limitless backdrops for picture perfect, frame-worthy moments. And when that city and those backdrops are paired with the talented Mikkel Paige, magic happens. The kind of magic that will make you want to devour these images all day long, and you can do just that right here.

From Mikkel PaigeSean is a self-described shy guy and Gina is his smiley and soft-spoken fiancee. But on this day there was no hiding their evident love as they walked around the Meatpacking District and lower Chelsea to capture this special chapter in their lives: their engagement.

The bride and groom live right across the river from NYC, in Weehawken, New Jersey, and see some of the best views the area has to offer. Though while New Jersey and the shores of nearby beaches is a big part of who they are, Manhattan also has a big role in their lives.

Because their wedding is in October in Red Bank, New Jersey on the Navesink River, they wanted their engagement photos to capture a different season and location. Thus, they chose New York City at the height of a fully blossoming, vibrant spring. Their outfits were carefully selected and added to the colorful scenery surrounding them. From the Standard hotel, with its bright yellow outdoor seating, to the pink and greens that drenched the beauty of The High Line, they, along with their photographer Mikkel Paige, covered architecture, urban graffiti, and lush greenery – all within a few blocks radius!

From the groom, Sean… We were going back and forth on where to do our engagement photos and we kept coming back to New York City. This is a place that is special to both of us and offered so many unique locations. Ultimately we decided on the Meatpacking District for its easy access to The High Line and many different textures Mikkel had to work with.

We wanted to wear casual clothes rather than making it too formal and wanted it to coincide with the spring theme. I went with a pair of Nantucket red pants from and a blue button down, both from JCrew. (They also provided a little touch of home for me – I grew up on Cape Cod.) Gina went with a salmon skirt and denim top, also from JCrew.

The actual engagement session came with a lot of nerves and anxiety for us. Neither Gina or I are terribly into having our picture taken. Our anxious anticipation was quickly quashed! Mikkel did an awesome job at making us feel comfortable and being in front of the camera suddenly felt natural.

The day was a sunny, breezy spring Saturday; we couldn’t have asked for better weather. Upon Mikkel’s recommendation we started down at the Standard Hotel in the late afternoon hour to capture the golden hour and made use of their trendy outdoor furniture. We then made our way around the Meatpacking District on a very cool journey Mikkel had previously scouted to capture the different offerings in the area. We finished on The High Line just in time for an awesome sunset to go with an even better hug. (We wanted to mimic an awesome message we learned during the afternoon: Hug Life.)

The session was great, we couldn’t be happier with how the pictures came out. Mikkel did an unbelievable job in making us feel comfortable and bringing out the best in us (easy when you have a beautiful subject like Gina, not as easy to do with a subject like me). We are so glad our friends passed Mikkel on as a recommendation to us!

From the bride, Gina… We spend a lot of time in NYC and couldn’t think of a better place to do our engagement photos. The Meatpacking District and Chelsea areas have some of the best spots Manhattan has to offer – old school NY emulated by the cobble stone streets, fun modern architecture and of course, The High Line.

Sean and I were a bit nervous leading up to the day of the session. We weren’t sure what to expect and we both can get a bit camera shy. However, as soon as we got there and saw Mikkel, we loosened up after the first few shots and just had fun with it! Mikkel made it so easy to be ourselves and beautifully captured us simply enjoying ourselves and being naturally happy.

Overall it was an amazing day that was fun, playful and loving. It really captured who we are and it made us much more comfortable with being the center of attention for our photos on our wedding day.

ABOUT THE RING
From Sean… Gina’s ring was designed by Ken & Dana Design located in New York City. They did an awesome job of transforming the idea I had in my head into a physical reality. We were both blown away by their craftsmanship and the ease of the whole process; we are now clients for life and have referred a few of our friends their way.

From Gina… I’m in love with my ring, it’s exactly what I wanted. Sean nailed it! It’s a round cut diamond surrounded by a diamond filled halo. It’s delicate and timeless – I receive many compliments on it! Ken & Dana, the husband and wife team that designed it in their NYC loft location, are two of the nicest people.

Mexico Wedding from Jillian Mitchell

Destination weddings never fail to make me day-dream the rest of the day away. It’s that perfect combination of gorgeous settings mixing and mingling with my favorite thing ever – weddings. The result leaves this little blogger in la la land for far longer than I care to admit. And when the destination wedding just happens to be from Jillian Mitchell…you can find me hanging out in this gallery for the rest of the day.

From Jillian MitchellKira and Carl got married in Chacala a beautiful small beach town about two hours North of Puerto Vallarta. Her parents have had a house there for years so it seemed appropriate that they go the destination route. They got ready at her parents house and the reception was held at the Chacala Beach Club. It was very simple, not a lot of details, but just enough which along with the love of their family and friends who made the trip down made for a gorgeous day.

Palm Springs Wedding from Lacie Hansen Photography

Lacie Hansen has a way with the light. No doubt about it. So when you put her in Palm Spring with probably the coolest wedding ever, and what does she do? She delivers. BIG time. Throw in a pinch-me-perfect setting like Sand Acre (ahem — Marilyn and Joe’s old love nest), elegant design by Tamara Bolton, and two crazy stylish grooms…well, you’ve got a gold mine of  wedding goodness.

And be sure to save some time for NazFilms,Inc. amazing wedding day capture.

From Dale, one of the Grooms…How did we meet? Well, it depends on who you ask- Dan says at an event, but according to Dale, perhaps the more matter of fact one of the two, at a bar!  We met 13 years ago and ever since August 14, 1999, we knew there was a promise of something wonderful. Just like some couples, we exchanged I love you’s, shared loads of laughter, traveled to exotic locales, and even lived in multiple houses together. However, a big magical wedding was never something we dare to dream about. With the laws against us, we never even envisioned what the wedding would look like or where we would finally tie to knot, but we were truly happy with being a loving, committed couple. Having been committed to each other’s futures and dreams, it was as if we were a married couple since we moved in together, third year in!

Ultimately, it took almost losing each other to Dan’s leukemia to realize what are we waiting for? Some may even say that the cancer had a silver lining- it brought us closer than ever and prompted our big magical wedding. So why did we choose Palm Springs for our wedding? Well, prior to visiting Palm Springs, we thought it would be full of blue rinsed hair people, but we were pleasantly surprised with its accepting community and its passion for design and architecture, the which we love. Of course, having our vacation home in Palm Springs did persuade our decision- this is where we truly feel at ease with the beautiful blue skies and it’s HOT temperature.

When thinking about an overall theme for our day, we wanted Old Hollywood with a few casual, elegant touches. We chose Sand Acre, or also known as Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio’s old love nest, using the outdoor patio as our wedding venue to reflect our love for alfresco dining. If we were to describe the wedding in a few words, it would be simple, elegant, and indulgent, hence the 3 outfit changes! All in all, our wedding was not all about us, but about celebration of love, life, and happiness. We wanted to thank our family and close friends, who have been tremendously supportive through the last few years. It was truly a magical 3-day event with 80+ guests who flew from overseas- we would do it all over again any day.

Margaret Elizabeth’s Home Tour

Confession: I’ve had a girl crush on Margaret Elizabeth for longer than I’ll ever admit. With her fabulous jewelry collection, her incredible design sense and infectious go-getter attitude, I’m fairly certain that I’m not alone. So when she let us take a peek at her newly updated San Fransisco pad, I knew it was going to be good, but I didn’t realize it’d be absolutely beyond. So while I sit here and swoon, you should feel free to spend some time in the gallery. Our dear Josh Gruetzmacher was there to capture it all, and it’s all really, really good.

From Margaret… My husband and I have lived in our San Francisco apartment for the last three years. We fell in love with its high ceilings, abundant natural light, and classic San Franciscan architecture. We’ve had so much fun designing the space and making it our home!

The style of apartment is pretty eclectic- a mix of traditional and modern, with many pieces coming from adventures around San Francisco and abroad. We’ve gotten the majority of our furnishings from antique shops, the Alemeda Flea Market, and a few lucky finds on craigslist (our marble top side tables in our living room, for instance).

As a jewelry designer, my days are spent playing with color and texture, and that bleeds in to the design of our home. If I had it my way, I would redecorate on a monthly basis! Instead, I’m always reinventing little corners of the apartment by creating vignettes with different knick knacks.

My favorite pieces in our house are the ones that have a story- a set of crystal glasses from my grandmother, photos from our wedding, and pieces we’ve collected while traveling. It’s fun to walk into a room and instantly be reminded of a past trip or adventure. The carpet in our bedroom is from a recent trip to Morocco. I love that every time I look at it, I’m reminded of the time we spent there.

New York Wedding from Craig Paulson Photography

If there is one thing to take away from this wedding, you may want to look past the hand painted wedding logo, the fits-like-a-stunning-glove gown, the ridiculously beautiful flowers and go straight for this bride’s smile. Though, I highly recommend not forgoing all of that as it is amazing. But Craig Paulson Photography captured a smile that goes for miles and I am guessing, along with this wedding, it’s something you won’t forget about anytime soon.

From the gorgeous bride… At the beginning of last summer, Derek and I were driving to a friend’s party one Friday evening in Brooklyn when he took a detour and surprised me with a ring under the Brooklyn Bridge! The proposal ended in a loud applause by groups of passerbys who were watching. After our celebration in Brooklyn, we headed out that evening to the Hamptons where we were spending our 2nd summer together there. We immediately knew we didn’t want to wait too long to get married and we wanted a wedding outdoors near a beach in the warmth. We quickly looked all over eastern Long Island for the perfect (and available) place to get married and found a location in beautiful Shelter Island at Rams Head Inn – our wedding in just 3 months!

I was very fortunate to find a dress I loved at my first dress fitting and the best people to plan the wedding with – from my favorite florist Carol, the talented artist Happy Menocal who designed and hand painted our wedding logo as well as all of our table and place cards and program, awesome photographers David and Caleb, amazing makeup/hair artist Agata Helena from Brooklyn, a variety of great music from a string quartet to bongo drums and saxophone played with a DJ, Alexandra from Erganic Design who executed the big day flawlessly, and last but not least my father, a pastor, who traveled from Korea and officiated our wedding!

Derek and I share the love of traveling so we decided to name each of the tables with meaningful places that we had traveled to together over the course of our two years together (Manhattan included of course). Happy drew a painting for each place, and photos of us from each of these places were incorporated into the name card display. It was also important for us to include something Korean into the wedding so we decided to wear a Hanbok, a traditional Korean attire, during cocktail hour. My mother also wore one in pink, which is the traditional color for the mother of the bride. Orchids have always been my favorite flower so most of the floral arrangements revolved around some type of orchid. And instead of a traditional guest book, we had a photo booth where guests left fun photos of them for us with a note on them.

It was a glorious, sunny weekend with our friends and family who mean so much to us and we could not be happier with our celebration. The joyous day was filled with much laughter, excitement and most importantly, love.

From Clean Plate Pictures I knew that I wanted to collaborate on a styled shoot with Michelle, and from the very beginning we talked about infusing it with a glam, edgy, rock ‘n’ roll vibe. I suggested the Basilica Hudson; the space has such a cool, industrial look to it, and I knew it would provide the perfect backdrop for our shoot. I called in the super-talented Jackie Schneider for hair and makeup, and from there, we all began brainstorming. On my wish list: a marquee light! And photos along the train tracks, just outside of the venue, were a must.

From Michelle Ferrara HandmadeHaving seen a lot of the same trends in wedding style recently, I knew immediately that I wanted to do something different for this shoot. As much as I love a soft, lacy, perfectly pastel wedding, Erica and I both agreed that it would really be a blast to go in the complete opposite direction. Our visual starting point was actually the cover of David Bowie’s Aladdin Sane. (I mean, what’s cooler than that lightning bolt?) Our color palette: an ombre effect made up of vibrant shades of flame red, cherry, magenta, and purple….plus a whole lot of gold. The theme came to life though a wide array of handmade details, vivid florals, and some seriously cool wedding fashion. Lightning bolt drink stirs and a giant marquee light (Erica’s wish!) hearkened back to our original inspiration. Boldly textured arrangements of peonies, protea, cockscomb and poppy pods in gold mercury glass softened the look while remaining true to the overall aesthetic. We dressed our bride Elena in head-to-toe gold sequins and glitter, complete with studded shoes; Lawrence, our groom, looked amazing in a very slim-fitting, fashion-forward tux by Michael Andrews Bespoke. Michelle Apiar of Haute So Sweet created the (*delicious*) ombre cake pops and wedding cake. Row upon row of metallic fringe, plenty of glitter and sequins, and a wall of gold-tipped feathers — it all really popped against the incredible, distressed brick walls of the Basilica.

Heart Themed Wedding from Christine Choi Photography

This wedding is pure perfection.  And I am not kidding.  It’s the kind of day where every moment is better than the last and every detail just screams pretty; a bundle of awesome all wrapped up in some amazing images captured by Christine Choi Photography.  I’m talking beautiful blooms from The Plant Lady, a yummy cake from Patty’s Cakes and a Melissa Sweet masterpiece… just to name a few.  So grab that cup of coffee, cozy on up and kick off your week with a whole lot of pretty right here in the full gallery.

From Christine Choi Photography… Sophia did an amazing job of coordinating the wedding with a big help from her friend.  I love little details that she incorporated in the wedding.  The blue and yellow feathers in her bouquet and the bridesmaids’ flowers were fun and whimsical.  I also love the red heart umbrella that happened to match the card that David gave her.  Her red chinese gown also repeated the romantic red heart theme.

Pete and I met after a friends wedding in September 2011 in Sydney. We arrived to the post-wedding destination that evening and soon after arriving, I pointed out a cute guy at the bar to a girlfriend of mine and proceeded to head back to our group of friends. Soon after I was being led by my girlfriend to go and meet this handsome mystery man. Who knew that evening in the most unlikely circumstance, I would meet the man who would alter the course of my life forever. Twelve months and one week later, Pete took me down to our spot at McMahons Point on Sydney Harbour, tied a piece of ribbon around my finger and asked me to marry him. After many yeses from me, tears and laughter, my family came around the corner with champagne to celebrate. Little did I know Pete had organized for them to fly from interstate to share the momentous occasion with us.

When we envisioned our wedding, we wanted it to be completely us. Pete was living in Sydney and I was living in Brisbane, but we didn’t want to get married in either of those cities. We decided on my hometown of Toowoomba, to allow all our guests a weekend getaway in the country. I concepted the wedding style, with the help of my dear friend and business partner, who also has a styling business, Amini Concepts. The Hamptons-inspired preppy botanical style with white, green and natural tones was just perfect for our long lunch wedding reception.

All our guests had delivered to their various accommodations, a welcome bag that consisted of handmade wheat bags (done in the same material as the table runners at the reception; thank you Mum!), local soft drinks and local biscuits, along with tourist information. The festivities started on the Thursday evening with an intimate family dinner in the private dining room at Veraison. There was much work to be done setting up on the Friday. We own a furniture hire company and so were so fortunate to have our great team assisting with the set up. Two trucks full of beautiful items and hours later, we were done! On Friday afternoon Pete and I parted ways and that evening Pete’s side of the family and friends had dinner at one of the Irish pubs in town, while my side dined at another famous pub, The Spotted Cow.

As we chose not to have a wedding party, my dearest girlfriends and their respective partners were all staying with me at the iconic Vacy Hall Homestead in Toowoomba, we booked the twelve rooms out. After a room mix up however, I even had one of my dearest friends bunking in with me the night before the wedding; what fun!

The morning of the wedding was just unforgettable and so much fun, we all had breakfast together in the sun out on the back verandah and then everyone had their hair and make up done in my room, so there was a flurry of activity all morning long with the girls coming and going I just loved it!

Being in the wedding industry, I feel like we had such a carefree lead-up to the wedding. My only concern was that it would feel like work, but it rarely did. When it’s your own wedding it is just something so special and truly magical. If I could encourage any couples who are looking to get married, outsource what you don’t know and trust people who do this week in week out. (They know what they are doing and do it oh so well!) I just called the amazing suppliers we work with all the time and asked if they would be part of our wedding. Thankfully they all said yes and helped create a day that was truly Pete & me.

We chose our venue first and then wanted to choose the church where we would be married next as this was very important to us. The choice was made very easy for us as we happened to pull up to St. Lukes Anglican Church just as the priest opened the doors, we met and had an instant connection. On our wedding day, both our mothers wrote family prayers and read them during the service. It was such a special touch to have our Mums play a special role on the day. Both Mum and Dad walked me down the aisle and I will forever have the look on Petes face when he first saw me coming towards him etched in my memory. It was a short but heartfelt service overflowing with love and joy. We chose not to do any styling at the ceremony, but kept it traditional and simple.

The reception, however was another story, the styling was detailed and yet simple. Guests arrived to the grounds at Gabbinbar Homestead in the early afternoon and we had drinks and canapes on the lawn before heading into the conservatory for lunch. Cocktails on arrival were Pimms No 1 punch, my absolute all time favourite afternoon ladies drink. It was made famous at Wimbeldon, but I think its appropriate at any afternoon soiree. My favourite detail outside on the lawn was the personalised directions signpost that we made with the places that all our guests travelled from (both interstate and overseas) as well as the place where we first met, a bar on Sydneys lower North Shore, Minskys. I had also hand-sewn some hessian bunting with our initials on it, that Pete swiftly ripped up while we were having our photos taken so it would reflect our new initials.

We just loved the two separate sitting areas as you walked into the homestead, one styled as more of a gentlemans lounge and the other a more feminine room with a marshmallow roasting station. The port and whisky bar was a hit with the gents and were all hand selected. The botanical styling was accented by the foliage chandelier we constructed, the fig trees at the end of the conservatory, the name place tags hanging from the back of each guests chair, as well as the maidenhair ferns which made up the main element of the table styling. Green and white striped table runners were accented with rattan charger plates and sat on A-frame trestle tables with white Bentwood chairs. It looked beautiful in the day and as the sun started to go down and the candles started to glimmer, it really was exactly as I had envisaged.

One of the best parts of the reception were the speeches so heartfelt and genuine there were tears all round, coupled with much laughter. My eldest brother was our MC and he did the most fabulous job of it. The last formal part of the evening was the first dance where I whipped out the mic and surprised Pete by singing the first verse to him of Youre Just Too Good To Be True his face was priceless, such fun! Because we had a lunch but danced on into the night, we wanted to make sure that our guests didnt go hungry. There was a chef carving ham with condiments and rolls throughout the evening and the marshmallow roasting station by the fireplace was a hit (I guess it was my take on a lolly buffet). As guests were leaving we had slider burgers that were amazing. The staff at the venue even came out and delivered them to us as we got on the bus to head back into town!

We wouldnt change a thing about our wedding day it was simply the most wonderful joy-filled day where we made beautiful promises to each other and were blessed enough to share it with our family and friends who we love so dearly.

Canadian Prairies Engagement from Ariana Tennyson Photography

This engagement session from Arianna Tennyson makes me want to schedule a little session with my hubby ASAP. Because every single image sitting pretty in this post is picture perfect to say the least. It doesn’t hurt, of course, that this couple is just as cute as they come, making this gallery one gorgeous place to be today.

From ArianaThe Canadian prairies were a perfect backdrop for this summery styled engagement session. With a goal to capture photos similar in feel to a styled shoot, we chose elements and colours all complimenting each other to achieve a uniform mood. We accomplished this through classy outfits for him and her, simple and natural local floral elements; beautiful things grow here in Manitoba! And details like thrift-shop lanterns, a home-made quilt and a wheat field. Avery’s red lipstick, nails and hair all completely fit the theme as well. We have the best sunsets here on the prairies (because there is nothing in the way!) and we used this to our advantage to get stunning, sun-drenched photos.
