SMP’s Blogger Bride: Devon Says “I Do”

Hey there, pretty brides! Devon Rachel here for another post in my Devon Says I Do series! In case you’re wondering what the heck I’m talking about, check out my first post here on SMP. What brings me to the Hollywood hills in 5-inch heels, balloons in hand, all while sipping (poppin’ bottles!) champagne? I’m celebrating, darlings! We have nailed down one of the hardest parts of this process: we set the date! Sounds like a perfect occasion to trot around in a cute outfit if you ask me.

As you all know, picking a date can be such a struggle. In our case, struggle was an understatement. We’re having the wedding in Dallas and I live in Los Angeles—which makes it a destination wedding (without the beach). I feel like the weight of the world is (half way) off my shoulders. If they can’t make the wedding for a sister’s graduation, family vacation, or whatever, we have to deal with it. There comes a point where you have to just stop worrying about everyone’s schedules and pick a darn date. If they can be there, great; if not, that’s why you have a videographer.

With that ginormous task accomplished, I’ve got some exciting decisions and planning next. I know what you’re thinking: “AH! Photographer!”. Lucky for me, you’re witnessing the fabulousity of my actual wedding photographer. Check and check.

I’m so looking forward to asking my bridesmaids—coming up with a cute way to do that will be fun! I am a little nervous about the engagement shoot, believe it or not. Although I’m a stylist, it’s hard for me because I’m not just styling any old shoot. I’ve also got to worry about my sweet fiancé who, like most men, enjoys being AWAY from the camera. Whew!

With all of these decisions and tasks to complete, I have to say I’m sitting here thanking the good Lord for Pinterest and Style Me Pretty. You can check out my Pinterest for my inspirations along the way and stay tuned for next week’s Devon Says I Do!

Pumpkin Spice Pancakes

I’m come to terms with the fact that Fall is the season for us to pumpkin everything in sight.  Tis the season when pumpkin becomes a verb.  In the spirit of Fall I’ve made us pumpkin spice pancakes for breakfast.  They’re wonderfully fluffy, spiced, and perfect when dripping with pure maple syrup.  They’re the answer to every weekend from now until New Year’s Eve.  For more great recipes, visit joythebaker.com.

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

Franciscan Gardens Wedding from Perpixel Photography

This wedding has so many different layers of pretty.  Like a trifecta of wedding goodness, starting with some of the sweetest DIY details you have ever seen.  Think fab paper goods, a sweet as can be cake topper and a fun-filled photo booth, all crafted by the adorable bride and groom plus awesome friends and family.  Add in some vendor magic from the likes of The Party Studio and Perpixel Photography and we have ourselves one seriously amazing gallery.  Join me there for all of the pretty.

From the Bride… Our wedding was intimate and laid back and a lot of fun. We wanted the day to be a big celebration and our main goal was to make sure all of our guests had a great time. What made the day extra special was having all this help from family and friends. We were planning a CA wedding from NY, so this wedding would not have been possible without all the help from our families and friends. From the handmade cake topper (made by my younger sister, Becky) to the special songs during the ceremony (we have some talented friends!) to some items in the dessert table (made by my cousin, Chris), you could see evidence of the love poured out by those who helped all throughout the wedding.

We DIY-ed the photobooth (using spark booth software and webcam), wedding invites (and other printed items) and the cake topper.

Chicago Engagement from Kristin La Voie Photography

Engagement sessions like this?  They make me so incredibly happy.  Because when fun-filled, stylish shoots team up with the perfect duo and a place like Chicago, it’s a literal love fest of pretty.  One that captures all of that soon to be married bliss, as well as one of the world’s most awesome cities.  See it all captured by Kristin La Voie right here in the full gallery.

From Kristin La Voie If you love Chicago, then you’ll LOVE this session and this beautiful couple! Hye-Sun & Rafael are the sweetest pair and were dressed impeccably for a fantastic evening session around Chicago. The Art Institute Gardens are quiet before sunset, so we opted to start there first for some intimate shots around the fountains and crab apple trees. They couldn’t stop smiling and laughing! Millennium Park’s Lurie Gardens served as a casual pit stop for some dancing in the lush flowers and fields hidden in the middle of the bustling city. Buckingham Fountain was surprisingly quiet and as the sun set, the light sparkled right off the cascading water for a perfect backdrop. I can’t help but smile looking at these two!

Kleinburg Station Wedding at The Doctors House by MoxiePix Photos by Dana

When a wedding happens to be overflowing with love, sentiment and peonies, I know we’ve hit the SMP jackpot. It’s the perfect trifecta of fabulous, and this wedding captured by Moxie Pix Photos by Dana couldn’t be a better (or prettier) example. It doesn’t hurt that the Bride just happens to be an event planner, so you know that trifecta will play out in the prettiest of ways – see it all unfold right here.

From MoxiePix Photos by DanaI am so excited to share this DIY wedding with you! The vibrant colour palette of multiple shades of pink instills a feeling of energy and happiness like no other. Believe it or not, the couple’s wee dachshund, Frank is the inspiration behind this blissful DIY wedding!

The bride, an event planner and avid SMP follower, planned every detail of their magical wedding with style, some examples include but are not limited to a set of eight glass magnet favours that represented something about the bride and groom, the flower girls’ dresses and hair clips, the seating chart, menus and an eye spy card game for the tables. Plus– the groom designed the most unique and stunning engagement ring I have ever seen!

From the Bride… After losing my best friend Carolyn in a car accident and feeling all alone in this tragic loss, I met Jason a month later in the elevator of our building. He said hi, and we continued to walk and talk on the way to work in the same direction. He had lost his father to cancer years before, so although they were different circumstances, he understood how I was feeling and became my rock during the hardest time of my life. We were inseparable every day after that.

Three years later, Jason took me to New York (my favourite place in the world) for my birthday. He proposed to me in Central Park at my favourite bridge where a turtle was our only witness. He hugged me from behind and asked “would you marry me”. I responded with “well ya” not realizing that was the actual proposal until he put the ring in front of my face. I couldn’t stop saying wow. Twenty wow’s later, he asked me if I had anything else to say besides wow, and I responded with “well you said would you, not will you”. As funny as it sounds now, that moment was perfect to me. Nothing over the top, very intimate, and in the best spot in New York!

We wanted a fun-filled summer wedding for our closest friends and family. Being an event planner, I was thrilled to finally plan the wedding I envisioned. Blissful would be the word to describe the day. We drew inspiration from our dachshund, Frank (who had to be included in everything somehow) and multiple shades of pink. Jason and I have so much affection towards each other. He’s the most caring individual I have ever met and we both knew hints of pink would represent the love between us.

I was so excited the day of our wedding. I just wanted to see Jason! Looking back now, one of my favourite moments was when we finally got to kiss each other. It was extremely hot that day so of course Jason’s face was a little wet. Not realizing what I did, after the kiss I said ‘ewww gross’ (thankfully only Jason heard me) and I wiped his face with my hands. Everyone in the chapel burst into laughter. You can’t plan these moments! It will forever remind me of how much fun we had.

When I walked down the aisle with my father, wrapped in my bouquet was a locket with Carolyn’s photo, one of Carolyn’s rings and my grandmothers wedding ring. I’m a sentimental person, so having Carolyn so close to me meant everything. She was with me every step of the way. I wanted to do something for Jason as well, so pinned to his wedding gift of Tiffany & Co. New York cufflinks (had to include my name and our engagement into our wedding), was the same silver locket with a photo of his father on his wedding day. During the son and mother dance, Jason opened up his Jacket and showed his mother the pinned locket with the photo. She began to cry and I knew that moment meant everything to both Jason and his mother.

I am a very hands-on event planner, so there were so many aspects of our wedding that were DIY projects; including a set of eight glass magnet favours that represented something about the bride and groom. Other DIY projects included the flower girl dresses and hair clips, the seating chart, menus and an eye spy card game for the tables.

The venue itself was absolutely perfect. There was something so special about The Doctors House. The candlelit chapel was romantic and the surrounding gardens were gorgeous. We had so much fun at the reception – especially at the dance. The highlight of our dance was when our DJ played ‘Fresh Prince of Bell Air’ and everyone went nuts singing!

Our wedding day was a dream come true. We couldn’t have had a better day surrounded by those we love and mean the world to us. We are so thankful for our photographer Dana, for capturing so many love-filled moments and especially the detailed shots of Frank and my grandfather’s loveseat bench. Thank you!!

Tuscany Wedding Inspiration Shoot from Emm and Clau

I have such a soft spot in my heart for inspiration shoots. They fill our screens with picture after picture of pretty, and allow us all to dream a little bigger. So this beauty from Emm and Clau is right up my alley. It’s filled with gorgeous florals from Stiatti Fiori, designed by Varese Wedding and all takes place at the stunning Villa Dianella – making this gallery one inspiring place to be today. See it all here.

From Emm and ClauIn April we had the pleasure to shot an American destination wedding in Tuscany and because we wanted to do some traveling also and had some spare time for shootings, we decided we wanted to photograph an Italian styled shoot. So we got in touch with Varese Wedding and started planning everything.

We wanted this project to be something very chic yet simple, in pastel colors. We loved the venue, the stylish wedding table, the delicious candy bar and our lovely Italian bride for the day. But to finish it all with something unexpected, we incorporated a crazy sweet maid of honor to spice the story. We are so thankful for the whole team that did such an amazing job, and were so nice and supportive. We hope you enjoy the photos and get inspired!

Romantic Austin Wedding at Wild Onion Ranch from Kristi Wright

Beautiful teal hues and pops of vibrant florals from Rosehip Flora aren’t the only details you’ll love about this wedding.  No, you’ll also fall head over heels for the stunning locale (Wild Onion Ranch), the adorable bride and groom and the downright amazing stylings of Bird Dog Wedding.  And when you’re done picking your jaw up off the floor, you can join me in the full gallery captured by Kristi Wright, because it’s chock-full of pretty.

From the bride… Josh and I wanted our wedding day to be relaxed and carefree. Our goal was to find a beautiful outdoor setting with a laid back feel, then add some tasty Mexican food and great music. We are both from Texas and couldn’t imagine a more fitting place than a ranch outside Austin to tie the knot! We were so excited to get married but also wanted our wedding day to be a celebration of our friends and family. I just wish we could do it all over again!

My favorite memory of the day is probably my first dance with Josh. We chose a song that meant a lot to both of us and The Nightowls played it ridiculously well. It was the first time my brain stopped for a moment and I could look my husband in the eyes and swoon. We were finally married!

Another favorite memory was the best man and maid of honor speeches. I will never forget either of them; they were amazing and so heartfelt. Still gives me the goose bumps thinking about them!

My advice for brides would be not to get caught up in the little things. Pick a few things to focus on and the rest will work out. Also, don’t be afraid to hire someone to help!

Garden Wedding at the Brumby Hall and Gardens from Brita Photography

Brita Photography always sends us weddings that are not only as pretty as they come, but also as sweet as they come – and this little colorful beauty is the perfect example. Filled with equal parts heart and adorable details, there isn’t an image in this gallery that won’t make you smile from ear to ear. See them all here.

From Brita Photography…Jeff and Lauren share this sweetness together that just brings a smile to your face and warms your heart. The way they look at each other, it’s like they can read each other’s minds without saying anything at all. My favorite part of their day was when Lauren walked up to see her future husband for the first time. She ascended the brick steps and made her way between the garden hedges; she lightly touched Jeff’s shoulder and they shared the biggest hug. It was so romantic and sweet. Lauren is a designer herself and made all the wedding stationery from their invitations to their programs. The table centerpieces had gorgeous terrariums filled with succulents and soft flowers. Her bridal bouquet had succulents, too! It was perfect.

Jeff and Lauren were absolutely made for each other and it was such a privilege to be invited into their special day to capture them as they are together, with all their closest friends and family.

After their ceremony in the Perennial Garden, Jeff and Lauren had their first dance under a gazebo, strung with golden lights. It was the perfect start to celebrate the night away as Mr. and Mrs.!!

Danvers Wedding at Glen Magna Farms from Arielle Doneson Photography

This is one of those weddings that just sort of soothes your soul.  One of those weddings where crazy gorgeous blooms from Spruce Floral and fabulous vintage stylings join forces with a Glen Magna Farms setting that can only be described as amazing.  It’s also one of those weddings that simply screams HAPPY.  With a bride and groom who are so in love and so full of joy, it’s an entirely new level of wonderful.  See every last love-filled moment captured by Arielle Doneson right here in the full gallery.

From the Bride… I’d had plenty of time to envision our wedding as Tom and I had been dating for a decade before he proposed (on our 10th anniversary)! We met as freshmen in college and have been together ever since, studying abroad together in Spain and moving from Boston to New York a few years ago. We knew from the beginning we wanted our wedding to be natural and easy, very personal, very “us.”

Although we now live in Brooklyn, we always knew we would get married in the Boston area since that was where we met and spent a good seven years of our relationship. A bridesmaid of mine sent me some venues to look at, one of which was Glen Magna Farm, a beautiful old mansion with gardens all around it, just outside of Boston. I knew I wanted the feel to be a little rustic while still being elegant and romantic, incorporating vintage details throughout.

I knew I wanted the girls to be ethereal and bohemian in long chiffon dresses. They wore varying muted tones of lavender, taupe and gray and my sister, as my maid of honor, was in moss green. The ceremony was under a pergola of old stone columns and wisteria and the girls looked incredible with all the vibrant green around them. Their jewelry was mostly vintage, all of which I found in Brooklyn flea markets over the summer. The boys looked so cute in their skinny suspenders and succulent boutonnieres and Tom was very handsome and dapper in his custom three piece suit!

I really wanted to incorporate as many fun and personal details as I could. There was an underlying travel theme which stemmed from an idea I’d had years ago to use names of places we’d traveled and/or lived together as the table numbers. I found old maps online, printed them on linen paper and placed them in vintage frames I found on Etsy and eBay. There were no escort cards; instead we used a world map where guests had to find their name and were then directed to their “destination.” Our “guest book” was an old globe we found at a flea market on the Cape.

Our florist understood our vision from the get-go. We decided to use several small textural arrangements, which she put in all different kinds of vintage glass vessels. She also had the idea to incorporate lanterns, larger on some tables, smaller on others. No two tables were the same. We used the girls’ beautiful wildflower bouquets as the arrangements lining the long head table, placed atop burlap runners. There were lavender sprigs and bunches everywhere.

As the favors, we had trees planted in the name of each guest to re-populate the Atlantic forest of Brazil, a place close to Tom’s heart as he lived there for several years with his family. We wrapped little ferns in twine and placed them on the bread and butter plates with attached tags explaining what they were to our guests.

We wanted our signature cocktails to really be signature, so we did a Maracuja Caipirinha for Tom, a nod to his time in Brazil and his love for their cocktails. Mine was an Iced Green Tea, which was a delicious fusion of green tea, vodka, honey and lemon with a large sprig of mint, because as anyone who knows me knows, I am never without a huge iced green tea in the summer. They were named “The Peep” and “The Caitie B” respectively, for nicknames that started small and have stuck with us over the years.

Photographs were of course hugely important, especially since we decided not to have a videographer, but to have our guests pass around a handheld video camera instead in order to get some different perspectives. Arielle was totally into our whole concept, super excited about the details and captured it all beautifully. We couldn’t have been happier with her!

Our friends and family helped more than they’ll ever know, from my mom hemming lace tablecloths and painstakingly wrapping those little ferns with my sister and mother-in-law in the backyard, to my aunt printing a million custom labels and dipping chocolate pretzels for our hotel goody bags, from Tom’s sister helping stuff invitation envelopes and scouring flea markets with me to my girls frosting homemade cupcakes the morning of the wedding, this really was a labor of love. And it wasn’t just the girls – my dad went on more than one hunt for the perfect decanters and when it was discovered the night before the wedding that the best man had been sent the wrong suit, the groomsmen came together to get the right one the day of- tailored to fit just in time!

All in all, the night was natural and easy, which was exactly what we wanted it to be. It couldn’t have been more “us.”

6 Floral Tips for Smaller Budget Weddings from Rose of Sharon

Can we talk about the flowers in this wedding for a sec? They’re show stoppers. A beautifully cascading bride’s bouquet, rich purples complemented by the prettiest sage greens and vases filled with sweet petals that don’t tower over the table, but rather, invite you in. It’s the handy work of the lovely Althea at Rose of Sharon, who’s sharing her tips on how you can achieve this look with a smaller budget! See the rest of this beautiful day captured by The Photo Love, right here in the gallery!

1. Keep the size of the guest list down. With every additional person, you have to buy more food, linens, and flowers. Also, keep the size of the bridal party down. Flowers for large parties add up fast!

2. Be specific about colors, not flowers. Tell your florist a few flowers that you like and a few that you don’t like. Show them photos of the style you like. Let the florist choose the rest.

3. Double duty. Some items can be re-purposed. Altar arrangements can be moved to the buffet. Aisle markers can be used as accents at the reception. Rehearsal dinner flowers can be used at the reception (if proper care is taken).

4. Don’t rule out the standards. Carnations have a wonderful texture. Alstroemeria lilies come in a wide variety of colors. Daisies are fun. Paired with a few more expensive blooms, these classics work great.

5. Decide what’s most important and splurge there. If your bouquet is the most important, use the more expensive blooms, like calla lilies and orchids here and go for less expensive blooms in the bridesmaids’ bouquets. If the reception is where your focus is, have a focal piece for the room and coordinate the rest of the designs without matching exactly.

6. DIY. This is only recommended if you have experience with flowers, practice ahead of time and plan your day well. Flowers always take longer than expected and all the supplies you need can easily eat away any savings you may have. Oh, and go with something simple like hydrangeas. I also recommend a hybrid DIY-do your own centerpieces but purchase the more technical pieces from an experienced florist.

From the Bride… I went for a fairly classic look. Simple and tasteful, and with a mix of masculine and feminine. Our main color was a warm eggplant purple with accents of grey and black. To continue the theme of his & hers, the venue had masculine wrought iron candelabras as well as feminine chandeliers. I loved the mix of black lanterns with delicate flower clusters on the tables. For flowers, I went for a natural but not rustic look with a mix of interesting and unusual blooms. For my cake I went with a very feminine ruffled cake with fondant flowers and for his cake he went with a Turtle Cake with tons of caramel and pecans. Shawn’s absolute favorite beer is Yuengling, which is only available east of Memphis. A friend made a special trip just to it for us to serve at the reception. Shawn’s nickname is “Taterhead” and one of the touches that truly that was special to us was our vintage “Mr. and Mrs. Taterhead” cake topper on the groom’s cake. We did not hire a wedding coordinator and did the planning ourselves. We also went with a full service wedding venue, had lanterns as centerpieces to reduce the amount of flowers needed, and served heavy hors d’oeuvres instead of a full meal. We skipped some of the formalities such as wedding favors and printed programs. Overall the wedding was great and went so well. My favorite memory was walking down the aisle and seeing each other for the first time but we also both loved being able to talk with our out of state friends and family that we don’t see often. We did have a little issue with a flower falling off the cake (several times) but luckily Jeff from Avondale skillfully reset it for pictures and cake cutting. The other funny thing was we were rushing to make our exit before the sparklers went out, but unfortunately, they were still lighting them at the end of the line. The guys lighting them ended up in the center of all of our exit pictures! My mom told me beforehand that your wedding will never be 100% perfect and to just expect it….so that helped me just laugh and enjoy the day.

From Rose of SharonRachel came to me with the request that her flowers ‘not look like everyone elses’, that it be ‘natural, not rustic,’ that there be lots of texture, and that we use eggplant purple and sage green. With this, we were able to use flowers that most brides are afraid to try: Pieres Japonica, ‘Picasa’ Calla Lilies, Anemones, Succulents, Helleborus, Orchids, Clematis, and antique Hydrangeas. We accented this with deep plum miniature Carnations, Seeded Eucalyptus and Italian Ruscus. Rachel and Shawn’s flexibility with the types of flowers used gave us the opportunity to be creative–our favorite kind of bride and groom!

Nashville Wedding from Michelle Lange Photography

We always tell brides that your wedding photographer should feel like a friend. But Michelle Lange? She took it one step further. Because when this photographer turned matchmaker set up these sweeties on a chance blind date, she proved nothing is out of her realm of awesome. Cedarwood Weddings planned the day to a T, with Designs in Paper behind every paper pretty. So go ahead and lose yourself in this Nashville destination soiree with a trip to the full gallery right here.

From the Bride… When Matt proposed to me at the most beautiful castle (called Casa Loma) in Toronto, Canada, I did not think anything could top how romantic and beautiful that moment was for the both of us. Well, I was wrong! Our wedding day at the Historic Cedarwood home in Nashville, TN was a day we will never forget.

Matt and I met on a blind date in New York City back in May of 2009. A mutual friend, Michelle Lange, set us up; who lucky for us offered to be our wedding photographer 4 years later! Matt is from upstate NY and I am from St. Louis, MO, so when we started to talk about where we would like to be married we knew right away that we wanted to do a destination wedding. We had always loved the city of Nashville and with Matt’s music background, we began our search for the perfect wedding venue. I had done lots of online research and narrowed down a few places to visit. The Historic Cedarwood home had caught my attention as I stalked their blog pictures the days leading up to our first visit. As soon as Matt and I pulled into the parking lot and saw the beautiful white antebellum home and its amazing property, we immediately said “this is it!” It was love at first sight for us on that blind date and that initial visit to what would end up being our wedding venue!

We immediately picked a date and sent out our save the dates. As this hockey life is ever changing and with a lockout looming, we made the decision to move overseas to Zurich, Switzerland for the 2012/2013-hockey season. Planning a wedding from overseas is not an easy task, but fortunately the ladies at Historic Cedarwood were so accommodating and made our dream wedding come to life! They had me set up a Pinterest board that they followed to get a feel for our style and kept in touch with us via email and Skype throughout the year. They truly are amazing at what they do!

The day before our wedding we had to decide if we wanted to tent where our guests would be dining due to a chance of rain. I had not worried about rain up until a few days before and was disappointed that we had to make the decision to tent it. My emotions were way off because the tent ended up making our reception that much more intimate and romantic. It also didn’t end up raining and turned out to be the most beautiful 80-degree weather Nashville had seen in weeks!

My most favorite moment of that day was when Matt and I pulled up in a trolley and walked into our fairytale. Everything had been planned exactly how we wanted! We also had planned a surprise for our guests and performed a song by the Pistol Annie’s called “I Hope You’re The End of My Story”. I will never forget the feeling of singing with my new husband in front of all of our family and friends. Looking back on our day, I would not change one thing about it. It was absolutely the most perfect day and one that we will cherish for the rest of our lives!

Pumpkin Pie from Waiting on Martha

We should be ashamed of ourselves! Last week we featured Waiting On Martha‘s incredible Southern inspired Thanksgiving spread, and while a pumpkin pie obviously made an appearance, there was nary a recipe in sight. So we, of course, had to revisit and share this incredible dish. Crisis averted! And feel free to thank us later!

Homemade Pumpkin PieA classic fall recipe

total time
4 Hour/s 20 Minute/s
Serves 10Ingredients
  • FOR THE FILLING:
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 can (15 ounces) Libby's 100 percent pure pumpkin
  • 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
  • Whipped cream, for serving (optional)
  • FOR THE CRUST:
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 2 sticks chilled unsalted butter, cut into pieces
  • If you're going to make cut outs double this recipe to create two crusts
Instructions
  1. Mix 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon each salt and sugar in a medium-size bowl. Cut 2 sticks chilled unsalted butter into pieces. With a pastry blender, cut in butter, working until mixture resembles coarse meal.
  2. Add 4 tablespoons ice water; work with hands until dough comes together. If dough is still crumbly, add more ice water a tablespoon at a time (up to 4 more tablespoons). Do not overwork.
  3. Divide dough in half, and flatten halves into disks. Wrap disks separately in plastic; refrigerate at least 1 hour.
  4. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. To form the pie shell, roll the dough on a floured surface into a 14-inch round. Carefully place unroll over a 9-inch pie plate and fit gently into bottom and side of plate. Use kitchen shears to trim dough to a 1-inch overhang; fold under, and seal to form a rim. Prick the bottom of dough with a fork and set aside.
  5. In a small bowl, mix together, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin pie spice, salt, ginger, and cloves. Beat eggs together in a large bowl. Add sugar mixture and pumpkin; stir to combine. Stir in evaporated milk until well combined.
  6. Pour mixture into pie shell and bake for 20 minutes at 425. Reduce temperature to 350 degrees; bake until filling is set, 30 to 40 minutes. To tell the filling is set it will not jiggle at all in the middle and will likely begin to crack just a tad around the edges. **If at any point your pie crust begins to get too brown, which is very possible, cover with tin foil or pie shields and continue to bake**
  7. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool 2 hours. Serve with whipped cream, if desired, or transfer to a refrigerator until ready to serve.
  8. FOR CRUST CUT OUTS:
  9. Roll out additional crust and use cookie cuters to create shapes. I got mine fall cookie cuters at Williams and Sonoma. Lay cut outs on a cookie sheet and bake at 400 degrees for 5-10 minutes. Watch them as they will burn fast.
  10. Remove from the oven and add to completed pie for a festive look!

PS – there’s still time to enter our ginormous Thanksgiving inspired giveaway! Hurry, hurry!

Gramercy Park Hotel Wedding from Rachel Cho Floral Design

When it comes to throwing a fabulous wedding, The Gramercy Park Hotel really knows where it’s at. From traditional soirees to modern parties and everything in between, this historical hotel is basically the world’s best place to host a wedding.  Case in point?  This darling day captured by Kelly Kollar, a master class in impeccable design and romantic stylings, with enough gorgeous blooms from Rachel Cho Floral Design to send your heart into overdrive.  Click here for so much more.

From the Bride… Our wedding ceremony and reception were held on the rooftop terrace of the Gramercy Park Hotel, a venue that provided the perfect marriage of our vision for a romantic and elegant garden celebration with a classic New York event.

We wanted the day to feel intimate and inclusive for our guests by integrating family and friends into the details of our day. I carried my paternal grandmother’s beaded clutch inside of which I pinned my maternal grandmother’s pin and wove a strand of pearls belonging to my husband’s godmother. I wore an art-deco diamond bracelet that belonged to my great grandmother, and a pair of pearl earrings given to me by my husband. We exchanged hand-written vows under a huppah my husband built from scratch with my grandfather — a trained carpenter whose tallis served as the canopy, during a ceremony officiated by one of our dearest friends.

A brunch-themed cocktail hour included egg and cheese crostini, french toast bites, and mimosas, bellinis and Bloody Marys. In lieu of table numbers, we assigned each table a New York City landmark, illustrated and calligraphed by Paperfinger, who also designed our invitations. We set locations based on the guests seated at each table — for example, we sat at the Museum of Natural History table, the New York landmark where we got engaged, and in a winking nod to our sense of humor, we sat the groom’s high school friends, all native New Yorkers, at the Times Square table.

The lush, green rooftop lent an outdoor feeling to the event without the worry of the weather cooperating, and the bold hues and world-class modern art inside the hotel set a vibrant backdrop for our cocktail hour. We chose lush, heavily petaled flowers for our centerpieces, accentuated by creeping greens to reflect the ivy-wrapped trellises of the rooftop. Our goal in choosing these flowers, as well as the blooms for the bridal bouquet, cake and boutonniere, was to create a romantic nod to a carefully curated garden that wasn’t fully tamed. These were paired with tea lights and white linens for a clean contrast with the trees, lanterns and twinkling string lights throughout the venue.

Our goal was to have a wedding with understated elegance that felt timeless, and we are absolutely thrilled that our vision was executed flawlessly by our wonderful vendors.

Miami Spanish Monastery Wedding from Dillon Photo

The Ancient Spanish Monastery set the most stunning scene for this beautiful Miami wedding, and it’s a scene that will make your heart leap and your eyes thank you for stopping by SMP Florida today. It plays out like a fairytale and is all captured beautifully by Dillon Photo – leaving us with a gallery so gorgeous I could cry. See it all here.

From Dillon PhotoXintian and Daniel were married in a beautiful courtyard ceremony at the Ancient Spanish Monastery in North Miami Beach, FL. The couple met while they were both studying abroad in Germany and fell in love while traveling throughout Europe together.

In planning their wedding, Xintian and Daniel decided to have two ceremonies. The first would be in China for Xintian’s family, and the second in Florida where Daniel and his family live. Xintian wanted the overall look and feel of the day to be light and airy with hints of dusty pink and pale orange–a look I think she definitely pulled off with the beautiful flowers and lovely details.

After the ceremony, the couple and their guests headed over to Europa Restaurant in Hollywood, Florida for dinner, dancing, and fun. Guests enjoyed authentic European fare, as well as some of Xintian’s favorite sweets from China and a stunning pink ombre lace wedding cake.

Beverly Hills Hotel Wedding from Michael Segal Photography + Celebrations of Joy

When Tim Burton, Nashville and Old Hollywood combine, this is what happens.  A crazy cool Beverly Hills Hotel wedding styled to absolute perfection by Celebrations of Joy and boasting some of the coolest details you will ever see.  Think lush pink blooms, a candlelight reception and a black and champagne Vera Wang that will, put simply, take your breath away.  It’s what we’re calling a non-stop day of pretty and you can see every last beautiful moment captured by Michael Segal right here in the full gallery.

From Celebrations of Joy… When we met Kelly and Brandon for the first time, we knew they had not only an amazing relationship, but a fun and creative flair that had to be featured at their wedding. And when they told us that they wanted their wedding to be Old Hollywood meets Nashville with a touch of Tim Burton we knew the results would be amazing.

Working with the color and style of the dress, which was a total surprise to the groom, we brought in Maggie Jensen Floral Design to create three very different table arrangements. One combined Tim Burton-like black Manzanita branches with Metalina roses and twinkle lights, another dripped with off angled Mozart Callas Lilies and a third was filled with classic roses in champagne and dusty rose hues. To continue with the Burton influence, a black and white striped wedding cake was created by Joanie & Leigh Cakes, and as the couple was obsessed with their dog, Ziggy Starpup, a French Bulldog bride and groom graced the top of the wedding cake.

Inspired by the menu at the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel, we designed and hand made custom menu cards with black and white photos of the couple with the hotel logo on the front and the menu on the back. The tables were named after entertainment icons: musicians, directors and authors that influenced the couple and each escort card had not only a photo but also a description of why they chose each icon.

To celebrate Kellys college years in Nashville, we worked with Brad Vetter, a show print designer originally from Nashville, to design a letterpress invitation reminiscent of a concert poster, and displayed the full size concert poster as guests entered the ballroom.

From the Bride… We wanted to create a unique and creative wedding that showcased our personalities. Choosing The Beverly Hills Hotel as the wedding location pretty much took care of the former, and everything else seemed to fall into place as soon as I laid eyes on my black Vera Wang gown. The inlet of the gown added champagne and pink hues to our original black and white color palette.

After dinner, I changed into a one of a kind party dress designed by Jenny Reyes from her Geronimo line.

One of the most important aspects of the wedding was that Brandon and I wanted it to be fun above anything else. We both work in music, and our DJ, Tony Liebetrau, combined our alternative tastes with pop hits and oldies. Our photographer, Michael Segal, opened a photo studio that our guests flocked to in droves. We put cigars on the patio and passed out glow sticks a little before midnight. But what might just be my favorite touch was the late night snack. We opened a waffle bar with normal waffles, chicken waffles, bacon chive waffles, French fries, and mini vanilla and chocolate milkshakes!

Brandon and I met while both working in the Music Department at Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles, CA during the summer of 2008. I asked him to take me to shows via a Post-It note that I left on his desk. What began as a few informal dates between concerts and occasional Saturday trips to Malibu quickly developed into a lasting connection that would keep us spending our long weekends and vacations visiting one another while I finished my senior year at Vanderbilt University. Shortly after my graduation, I returned to Los Angeles to continue working as a full time employee at CAA. It was then that our connection and fondness evolved and we began to fall in love. In 2010, Brandon proposed with his Grandmothers engagement ring, and of course, a few Post-It notes. This wedding was the best day of our lives, and it exceeded all my expectations in every single sense!

Behind the Blog: Best Friends For Frosting

Not only is Miss Melissa Johnson one of the sweetest girls around blogland, she’s also so full of inspiration, of experience and creativity it’s hard to wrap my mind around it all. After peeking through her blog, Best Friends for Frosting, I have no doubt that you’ll see exactly why this girl right here is making waves. Captured by the talented Rachel Valley, there’s more in the gallery!

SMP: Some words you live by?
For success in anything in life, you must bring your whole self to the table. If your dream job does not exist, create it!

SMP: Any guilty pleasures?
Eating ice cream or candy in bed while watching Hallmark movies. Chick Flicks. Kate Spade. An expensive pair of boots. Karaoke apps on my iPhone. Very expensive desserts. Simply going out for an extra long dinner to catch up with a girlfriend.

SMP: What did you think your dream job was before your dream job found you?
In high school I wanted to be a psychologist, but then I realized that I was more fascinated by that idea rather than passionate about it. After high school I was certain I wanted to own my own bakery. I worked at 3 different bakeries just to get experience to open my own. Let’s just say it’s not as glamorous as it looks!

SMP: What’s your favorite quote that describes your creative process?
“For success in anything in life, you must bring your whole self to the table.” I am a huge fan of blending passion and personality. I think it’s a huge part of branding, especially when you’re blogging or Youtubing it up. There is only one version of you, and no person can be replicated. Shine from the inside. You will always be your own best asset that will set you apart from the others.

SMP: If you had the opportunity to get a message across to a large group of people, what would your message be?
If your dream job does not exist, go create it! Look within yourself and unlock your own inner-potential, whether you’d love to sell a product, start a blog, or even start a YouTube Channel. Love what you do and do what you love. It will make you a better person. The fun part about infusing your job with passion is that it usually never feels like “work” and people will feel that positive energy.

SMP: If you could do it all over again, would you change anything?
Everything has been such a valuable learning process for me. When I first started blogging, I was obsessed with getting good press coverage, so I would scout out other publications with large followings and pitch grand ideas. Generally the ideas would get approved, and before I knew it, I was consistently producing all of my best work solely for other publications rather than my own blog. Honest to goodness, I would end up creating and collaborating on gorgeous spreads that a lot of heart and soul went into. I then realized that I was displaying my mediocre work on my own blog, but my best work- some that went viral- would be on other people’s blogs. Starting this year, I’ve learned to weigh my opportunities and only create limited original content for other publications that truly meet my aesthetic. I now take the time to make sure I feature a majority of my best work on Best Friends For Frosting in order to showcase my creative ideas and to better connect with readers.

SMP: What is one piece of advice you would give to a blogger just starting out?
Make sure that whatever you do bounces back to yourself and your brand authentically. Do what YOU love. Take time to find your own unique voice. I know, it’s a hair awkward at first but you will get there. Also, collaborate, collaborate, COLLABORATE! Whether it’s local or online. I think hitting the pavement and collaborating with local creatives and go-getters has been one of the most valuable parts of my creative process. When you have a handful of talented people who share your style in one room, magical things are bound to happen.

SMP: What is your favorite item in your home?
We celebrated Best Friends For Frosting’s re-launch party at West Elm this summer, and I also styled a brunch table incorporating their products-including their famous flamingo print. Hundreds of people attended the event. Our Editor flew in from Washington, and one of our contributors even traveled from Canada. Pinch me! That night, I promised myself I could splurge on one sentimental item that I will hold on to forever. Of course I went for the flamingo print. It’s not only cute, but it’s also a visual reminder that hard work pays off.

SMP: What’s your best tip for balancing work and personal life?
Have set office hours and be sure to always respect those boundaries. If you work from home, make sure your office does not feel like you’re at home. If your office has laundry hanging out or meets the same aesthetic as your home, you’re going to feel like you’re at home. I think a very minimalistic office can really help set the tone for focus. Basically, make sure your office feels like an office and not another room of your home. It does wonders for productivity.

SMP: What was the tipping point in your business that made you feel like your blog was going to thrive?
A huge tipping point was feeling the support of the community – whether it be a blog we featured an exclusive interview with, receiving submissions, getting press, or collaborating hands on with others. Best Friends For Frosting has built a thriving community and I am so grateful for that. A recent big, exciting tipping point was that I was selected by Delta Faucets to be their brand ambassador. They had me do 20 back to back live television and radio segments from a production studio in Hollywood. And I just got word that my entertaining tips will be shared in 50 national publications this winter!

SMP: What is the hardest lesson in business you’ve ever learned?
Before I launched Best Friends For Frosting, I helped my husband launch an art / music / fashion website. We actually ended up spending more than $10,000 on unnecessary legal fees to start up our “corporation.” It was an expensive, valuable lesson that we definitely learned from.

SMP: Stranded on a desert island question… what’s the one cocktail you would take with you?
I’ve never met a Cherry Shirley Temple I didn’t like.

SMP: What color do you think will stand the test of trend time?
Gold will never phase out. It’s classy, yet it’s such a traditional color. And you can spice it up with a splash of color too!

SMP: One thing every style savvy homeowner should have?
A dining room table- but you have to love it! I grew up with a family that made sure we connected and had at least one good meal each day sitting around the dining room table. Some of the best conversations and best news was shared at that table. This furniture piece can potentially hold a lot of sentimental value and hopefully be passed down through family.

SMP: If you could buy yourself a single gift of any cost, what would it be?
My dream home! If I said fully furnished, would that count as a second gift? If not, let’s go ahead and kill two birds with one stone while we’re at it!

Missouri Wedding Inspiration from Todd Studios Photography + White Traditions Bridal House

I’ve seen a lot of weddings in my day. It comes with the territory of being a wedding blogger. I’ve seen it all, and fallen in love over and over again. But this is the first time I’m seeing a table suspended from the trees and it’s seriously the coolest. White Traditions Bridal House pulled together an inspiration shoot, captured by Todd Studios Photography, centered around the simple, boho bride, and the resulting decor just goes to show how a beautiful gown can fit into a beautiful wedding fabulously.

Bohemian

From White Traditions Bridal House… Hidden away…this gorgeous Bohemian inspired shoot was done in the heart of Missouri at a beautiful lakeside community called Innsbrook Resort. This lakeside community and gorgeous afternoon sunset provided the perfect backdrop as the August sun cast its warmest hues onto the lush outdoor haven.

Created by Worn Vintage Rentals, the table scene was constructed to keep natural elements present by combining the bohemian-chic style with the rustic woodland look – creating a look of romance like no other! Worn Vintage used a vintage door and rope, and suspended it from a tree branch to create a very creative table for the bride. Finished with natural elements from a fallen tree and amber glassware, the table popped with color while still creating an etherial feel. Antique china and repurposed iron wheels brought rustic elements to the table. The floral was done in ivory and bolds, which proved to be perfect opposites to the nature that surrounded the table. Texture was created by meshing all of the looks together into one tabletop.

The bride’s attire was chosen to be simplistic, yet unique, capturing the very essence of the bohemian culture: not too much fuss involved, simply relaxed beauty. Each of the two gowns (by Eden Bridals and Watters) embodied understated elegance while projecting ease and confidence. The brides hair was left down and wavy, which kept the look simple. Accessories were chosen to add unconventional twists to the simple styles of the dresses. The flower girl wore ivory and blush, and was styled with dramatic hairpieces to emulate the bride’s style.

Stationery, provided by Todd Studios Photography, was inspired by the outdoor beauty, and adorned in a modern fall palette. Textured paper and painterly florals alluded to the style of the day and paid homage to the serene surroundings. The playful bohemian-style was reinforced with casual script and filigree style.
