DIY Mini Bread Wreaths

If you’re feeling fancy this Thanksgiving, you should consider impressing your guests with these mini bread wreaths (hint: it’s much easier than you’d think!) The best part? You could make these tonight, freeze them for the next week and pop em in the oven day of. Move over dinner rolls, there’s a new player in town!

Mini Bread Wreaths
prep time
4 Hour/s
cook time
20 Minute/s
total time
4 Hour/s 20 Minute/s
Serves 10Ingredients
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ¼ cups bread flour
  • 4 tsp salt
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • Parchment paper
  • Kitchen shears
  • Pizza stone
Instructions
  1. Pour 2 ½ cups warm water in a large mixing bowl and add in yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add in all-purpose flour, bread flour, & salt. Mix well with a spoon until a wet and sticky dough is made. Cover bowl in plastic wrap and set aside until tripled in size, about 3 hours.
  3. Spread a thin layer of flour on a cutting board. Remove dough from the refrigerator and sprinkle with flour. Form into 10 small balls and wrap each with saran wrap and place back in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  4. Stretch each ball from the center to make a hole and form wreath shape. The hole should be about 1 ½” diameter. Place wreaths in groups of 3 or 4 on pieces of parchment paper and let rest, uncovered, for 15 minutes.
  5. Put a broiler pan on the lowest rack of the oven and a pizza stone on the top rack. Preheat oven to 475° F.
  6. Hold kitchen shears at a 45° angle and make deep cuts about 1” apart around the circumference of each wreath. Spread out the “leaves” to look like a wreath. Let rest, uncovered, for 15 minutes.
  7. Place the first group of wreaths (on parchment) on the pizza stone. Carefully pour 1 cup of water into the broiler pan to create steam, and immediately close the oven door. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until bread is golden brown.
  8. Remove from the stone and place on a rack to cool. Bake the remaining wreaths, adding a new cup of water to the broiler pan for each group.
  9. Tip: If you want to make ahead for Thanksgiving, just wrap tightly in foil once cooled, and freeze for up to one month. Reheat at 450°F for 20-25 minutes, wrapped in foil.

Houston Wedding from Nancy Aidee Photography & Keely Thorne Events

Two ceremonies means double the fashion, double the flowers, double the love. And it’s pretty amazing. I love this couple for introducing the idea to me, and I love Keely Thorne Events for coordinating the whole beautiful day. Captured by Nancy Aidee Photography, the wedding was worthy of two parties and then some.

From the beautiful bride… We chose our wedding to be in Houston because it is our home away from home. We are originally from Angola. Knowing that many of our guests would be traveling from different parts of the world including our own country of Angola, we wanted the party to be as if we were there. Parties in Angola are very versatile and incorporate music from several cultures. We also included many various foods from all over the world so there was something for everyone. Thus, we were sure everybody felt welcome and “at home.”

To us, the perfect wedding would be one that represented both my and Wilson’s personality and the things we like: classic yet luxurious and very romantic. For this reason, a “Marie Antoinette” theme was our inspiration. Our invitations were boxes that had a picture of a tulip in the background. It playfully also included the list of hotels and transportation services to facilitate our guests, given that it was a destination wedding. Tulips are a special flower to us and were used often in the wedding’s decor. Incorporated with many other types of flowers, there were different tulips throughout the decor including center pieces and aisle decoration.

In regards to the wedding favors, we wanted them to be durable and useful. Therefore, we gave out agendas that included descriptions of different states within the United States which could be interesting spots for vacation as well as Parker pens with our names engraved. To us, both of the elements of crystals and lace strongly represent class and luxury. I wanted diamonds to be represented everywhere not just for the luxurious feel but also as a representation of the amount of years that we aim to live happily throughout our marriage. Even the silverware used when cutting the cake had touches of diamonds and crystals. All of the tablecloths were made of special lace to represent class and tradition as seen in the aristocratic era which also represents our taste. The whole theme finally came together after the bridesmaid’s dresses were bought as they were very light and romantic looking. That’s when we decided that the venue needed to be filled with rich flowers with lots of petals and very soft in smell. The flowers definitely gave an important touch of romance which meant a lot to us.

The most special moment during the entire event was the first dance. It was simply magical. I was six months pregnant and the baby began to move strongly as we began to dance. Both myself and Wilson felt it throughout the whole dance which made us joke that the baby was dancing as well. It was a special moment for our little family. We danced to “Ela une todas as coisas” (translation: “She Unites Everything” by Jorge Vercilo. Another song which was played during our entrance to the venue which meant a lot to us as well was “Namora Comigo” by Mart’nalia.

We had both a civil and religious ceremony. I thought it would be important to change dresses to give each ceremony its own touch. It turned out to be the best idea because the civil ceremony dress was more modern and reflected that moment which was more official whereas the dress for the religious ceremony was much more traditional and romantic reflecting the spirituality of the moment. Wilson’s change of attire followed the same logic adding to the fact that he is very fashion-oriented and any excuse would be plausible to show off his fashion sense.

Easy Homemade Cranberry Sauce

Cranberry sauce, much like my beloved mashed potatoes, is one of those Thanksgiving staples that can completely make or break the meal. A good cranberry sauce is absolutely essential, but who has the time for elaborate over-the-top homemade versions? We know how easy it is to grab a can and run with it, but I swear we have something that’s ALMOST as simple and FAR more delicious. And you know what? You could make it today and it would still be good for Thanksgiving a week from now.

La Jolla Wedding from Amorology + Irish Grzanich

Anyone that knows me knows I’m a tried and true coffee drinker. Seriously, it’s basically my sport. But over past few months I’ve been testing the waters in tea world, and I must say, I like it a lot. So when the lovelies at Amorology sent this tea-inspired wedding my way, I had no choice but to grab a cup of chamomile and swoon away. (Tough job, right?) With lovely captures by Irish Grzanich, I pinky promise this is one pretty day you just mustn’t miss.

From Amorology… Jamie and Ryan are one of those sweeter than sweet couples that make you think you are living in a different era with their pure hearts. These beautiful actors first met during grad school at UC Irvine and their love continued despite temporarily living on opposite coastlines. While Jamie was in New York, Ryan would read books to her over video chat until she fell asleep. Such a memorable time in their relationship that we wanted to give a nod to their story book romance. Bookmarks served as favors for each guest and tea time inspired elements also found their way into the decor as a gesture to one of their favorite ways to pass the time together.

The Darlington House’s soft ambiance was a perfect fit for this occasion. As guests arrived they left their words of wisdom on tea cup shaped paper in a variation of peachy hues. The ceremony was then conducted by their dear friends. The couple’s nuptials were nothing short of amazing and had us holding back the tears!

After wiping a tear or two away, guests were greeted by our custom backdrop’s message to enjoy a spot of tea along with hanging tea cups. Attached to each cup were paper elements by Peanut Press Creative that resembled tea bags with the guests tea inspired table names. Atop the tables were assortments of garden roses, hydrangea, and dahlias created by Adrianne Smith Florals. They filled the reception with romance and a beautiful garden aroma.

We could not give guests tea without dessert! An assortment of warm pies and cake by Elizabethan Bakery were enjoyed by all. As the evening came to an end guests partied on the dance floor and melted as the bride danced with her groom and then her father.

We feel so blessed to know Jamie and Ryan and be a special part of their day! Thank you Irish Grzanich for capturing the memories of this day with your beautiful photography!

Sydney Breakfast Wedding from Jarred Tyers Photography

For those of us that are completely obsessed with breakfast (read: me), morning weddings followed by a yummy breakfast reception are kind of the best thing ever.  And when that morning wedding happens to be as beautiful as this little Sydney affair, even better.  Because this is a wedding that is seriously bursting with pretty, from the crazy amazing florals from Portobello Rose to the fab paper goods from Bow & Arrow Paper & Design Co. to the entire gallery of heartwarming (+ yummy) moments captured by Jarred Tyers Photography.  Join me there for all of the lovely.

And a little something special from Jarred Tyers Photography?  Yes, please.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/60978887 600 338]

From the Bride… We love going out for breakfast, so we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate our wedding day than a champagne breakfast with our friends and family overlooking Sydney Harbour!

Although it meant an early start (4am for me and my mum), the rain clouds cleared just in time for our 8am ceremony. Only 14 members of our immediate family attended the ceremony, which was held in the Herb Garden Pavilion of the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney’s CBD. I walked down the aisle to traditional music by a string duo – given the quiet of the morning I could hear the beautiful sound of the violin and cello as soon as I arrived at the gardens.

Following the ceremony, we all hopped aboard a little yellow water taxi for the 15 minute boat ride to our reception venue. As we arrived at the pier 110 of our friends and extended family greeted us from the verandah of the restaurant.

Andrew and I designed the theme and styling for the venue. I made over 70 metres of fabric bunting in pastel colours, which was hung throughout the room. On each table were three vintage silver teapots of various sizes purchased from second hand shops and garage sales. The tea pots were filled to the brim with colourful garden flowers, including lots of lavender to match my bouquet! Our seating chart was set out on a cork board and the guests found their seat by locating their name in scrabble tiles (we love to play scrabble). We spent hours sticking magnets on to the back of the scrabble tiles, so that guests could take their name home to stick on the fridge.

I created our wishing well by decorating the suitcase that my mum used in high school in the 70’s! Because we asked our guests to contribute to our honeymoon, I used pictures of our honeymoon destinations and made mini-bunting with the word “cards” to spice it up. Instead of a guest book, we asked our friends and family to sign a painting that we had made with our names and the date of our wedding. This was surrounded by wedding photos of our parents and grandparents.

Our cake was decorated in bunting to match the our theme and our cake toppers could not have looked any more like us – Andrew’s was even wearing the scarf of his favourite football team!

We ate a huge variety of fresh fruit and pastries from tiered platters and the “main course” was a choice between pancakes with berry compote and vanilla bean ice cream and bacon, eggs and sausages.

Glamorous Napa Valley Wedding from Weddings by Scott and Dana

The sheer detail and glam gorgeousness that you’re about to soak up is beyond. It may be the pretty pastel palette, the peacock themed invites by Bella Figura or quite possibly the layers on layers of blooms from Valley Flora, that steal your heart. The list goes on, but one thing is for sure—Weddings by Scott and Dana have provided the gallery for our viewing pleasure as long as we please!

From the Bride… Austin and I met through his father at a chiropractic philosophy evening. We were asked to pair up holding hands and looking each other in the eyes for 90 seconds as an exercise in feeling what real presence is like. This was the introduction that led us to develop our friendship and then our loving relationship. As chiropractors we have a deep connection through the way we serve people together and the way we trust in the universal intelligence of life itself. We wanted our wedding to reflect this so that everyone who joined us would magnify the energy of love and faith together.

We chose to get married in the gardens of the family home where I grew up, in the Napa Valley. They also live next to a vineyard that was at the peak just prior to harvest that I knew would make an awesome backdrop for some of our photographs. The theme for the wedding was 20’s Glamour. My colors were based on a spectrum of color inspired by a white peacock feather and touches of gold. Both were chosen for their spiritual significance and beauty. I liked that by choosing the theme we could involve fun touches of ostrich feathers, white peacock feathers, and shiny glitzy things to make the day and evening glow. Their was also a touch of regular peacock feathers as an honor to my “sister of honor” who lives part time in India where they have special significance.

I loved the use of the feathers in my bouquet and the feathery and metallic touches in the bride’s maid’s dresses. I found designer Sue Wong for the dresses and helped each girl to find theirs online using sites like bluefly and ebay in order to help them manage cost. I used a pinterest board in order to keep them all tuned in to what was being selected, so that we could coordinate. I even had a designer from etsy make custom white peacock fascinators for all of their hair, which they wore in their own unique ways. I adored seeing it all come together as they were a dazzling display of beauty and love for me to be surrounded by!

For our invitations I was honored to win a Grand Prize from Bella Figura through their “Do Good Bride” contest. It was such a joy to be able to send out these beautiful invitations as well as to include printed menus at the reception. I adored the feel of the cotton paper along with the gorgeous gold letterpress peacocks. I kept the gold peacock touch by having our cake designer paint gold peacock feathers onto the cake.

I found my dress at a boutique in Alameda called Janene’s Bridal that I decided on based on yelp reviews and wanting a place that would be relaxed while still being totally professional. My head piece I discovered at a little shop in Venice Beach and was imported from Donna Crain. I ordered an ostrich feather jacket for the after party on etsy. Each detail was a joyful find!

The year was quite intense leading up to the wedding with me working on a documentary film I am producing as well as with my mom going through cancer treatments. The wedding planning itself, along with our very special wedding planner Yong, became a special way for my mom and I to bond on plans around something meaningful to celebrate. This made it all the more special seeing her that night dressed up in a 20’s inspired dress, surrounded by celebrating, feather adorned friends and family. I think our theme created a fun and fancy environment that encouraged guests to leave their every day world for a night in order to enjoy the magical one we were creating. The atmosphere was healing for everyone!

For table numbers I wanted to involve our engagement photographs since they were perfectly in theme and I felt would add a personal flair to each table. I used a gold paint pen to add on the numbers and placed them in table card holders.

Austin and I created our own ceremony by going on vacation together for a full week. We brought together elements that were meaningful to us and exchanged vows that we wrote together. Having our ceremony run by a friend who we felt was a living representation of love and marriage made it come to life. It was a magical experience. I especially loved when the children were invited to come forward to offer us a blessing of “play and discovery”. Since his family is full of chiropractors (I am the 14th!) we also involved the chiropractors in the audience to stand to give us a “blessing of health and vitality” as well as all of the stunt families from my side to give us a “blessing of adaptation and agility.”

I loved sitting down to our head table and seeing the party through candle light, crystals, gold, and roses while watching people dancing to our amazing 11 piece band. Our first dance “Unforgettable” sums up the sentiment for our life-changing wedding. I am grateful to everyone who came together to make it so special! Photographers, florist, wedding planner, musicians, caterer, tent and furniture rentals, friends, and family!

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum Wedding by Ashley Biess Photography

Before I even get into how much I love this wedding (and oh, I love this wedding), I just have to say – I love this Bride. Like, adore her. Because anyone that dressed up as a Bride for Halloween at the wee age of five, is a girl after my own heart. So it’s no surprise the wedding she has been excited for since she was a little one turned out absolutely stunning, and thanks to the gorgeous images from Ashley Biess Photography, we get to share in all the giddiness right here.

From the Bride…Just like many others, I have been dreaming of this day since I was a little girl – literally – I was a bride for Halloween at 5 years old! So, when my now-husband proposed to me, I couldn’t wait to begin planning. Our inspiration behind the overall style of the wedding was a combination of vintage, shabby chic and rustic elements, focusing on pinks, creams, and whites as our colors. We wanted it to be casual, but pretty at the same time. We also incorporated a lot of DIY projects into this day, which I absolutely loved.

My favorite moment of the evening was standing at the front of the aisle with my (handsome) groom, surrounded by the people we love most in this world. Looking out at them truly made me feel so blessed! And of course, my second favorite moment had to be the mini hot dogs, French fries, and milkshakes brought out as late night snacks!

My advice to brides is to not doubt yourselves! There were so many times I would become incredibly frantic (sorry Mike!) because I was afraid my ideas we not going to come together as nicely as I planned in my head. On the day of our wedding, after walking into the venue, I couldn’t believe I ever questioned myself. Everything turned out more beautifully than I could have imagined and if I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t change a thing!

Serves 10Ingredients
  • 4 Chicken Apple Sausage Links, chopped
  • 1 Loaf of White Bread
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 1 celery stalk, diced
  • 5 medium sized shallots, diced
  • 1/2 tsp poultry seasoning
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine
  • 3 egg, beaten
  • 14 ounces chicken broth, divided
  • 2 TBS butter
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 400. Cut bread into 1/2" cubes and place them on 2 cookie sheets. Toast them for about 7 minutes. Alternatively, you can leave your bread uncovered overnight to dry it out. If making ahead, place in a ziplock bag and leave at room temperature.
  2. Melt one tbs butter in pan on high heat. Add sausage and cook for 2-3 minutes until just browned. Remove from heat. Add additional butter to pan. Add onion, celery and shallots. Cook for 5 minutes until they start to become translucent. Add poultry seasoning and stir. Add wine and reduce completely. Remove your veggie mixture from heat and combine with sausage. If making ahead, bring to room temperature and the cover and refrigerate overnight.
  3. Start stuffing. Add sausage + butter to pan. Brown and remove.
  4. Add in another pad of butter. Add celery and shallots. Cook for 5-7 minutes. Add 1/2 tsp poultry seasoning (optional) and 1/2 cup white wine. Cook until wine eveporates. Add veggie mixture to the sausage. Bring to room temperature then cover and store.
  5. When ready to cook, preheat your oven to 400. You can do this step while your turkey rests and your oven is already warm. Pour your bread into your veggie mixture and stir to combine. Add your eggs and 1 cup of your chicken broth. Stir well. Continue to add chicken broth and stir until your mixture is really moist but not wet.
  6. Pour your mixture into a buttered oven safe dish (preferably with a lid) and bake covered for 30 minutes. Remove cover and bake for an additional 15 minutes until nice and crisp on the top. If you're in a hurry, you can switch your oven to broil and just crisp up the top. Just make sure to watch it really closely as it might burn faster than you think!

Venice Proposal from Andrea Kuehnis

Venice, lovelies, is a magical city.  The kind of city that is brimming with good food, stunning architecture and fabulous culture every which way you turn.  It also happens to be a pretty amazing place to plan a surprise proposal.  The kind of proposal that takes place in a gondola with clear blue skies, the love of your life and the amazing Andrea Kuehnis in tow.  Click here for sooo much more.

From Andrea Kuehnis… You enter Venice and immediately, you get covered with the  blanket of Italian charm, food, Architecture, opera singers and history.

Shannon and Chris were attending a wedding of Chris’ high school friend in Italy, Lake Como, where I was also photographer. Chris contacted me before the event, and told me that he will go on a cruise with his girlfriend after the wedding. Before they went to the cruise ship, they would spend two days in Venice where he will propose to her. Wouldn’t it be great, to have this surprise on photo? Of course, a wedding proposal in one of the most romantic cities in the world, in a gondola? What a wonderful, wonderful surprise for her… and for me, a unique shooting.

We met in the morning and spent the whole day together in Venice for their “photo shoot” (so Shannon was told). Eating ice cream and the Promenade, walking over the tiny bridges and passing stores. Venice is wonderful for photography! You don’t want to stop exploring each and every little corner of it. Shannon got her proposal in a gondola – and she said yes! Going home to their hotel they celebrated with a glass of champagne to their new future together.

Venice, you might go there only once – but it will charm you forever!

From the Groom… When Shannon bought her childhood home from her parents, she discovered my title company and it’s real estate services came in handy. After my boss and her mother conspired, I asked Shannon out and we went to a Cleveland Indians baseball game, a golf tournament and several dinners later we began to date and knew that our sorted pasts had brought us together for some unknown reason.

Shannon loves cruises! She had been on 18 0r 19 cruises prior to us getting together. We took that particular cruise because it was a great way to see bits of Europe and the Mediterranean, without having to know the roads and travel in a bit of luxury. Shannon keeps me organized and on point.  I keep her relaxed and care free.

Texas Meets Tuscany Wedding from Keepsake Films

Y’all, I hope you’ll carve some time out of your day for this ah-mazing film. Keepsake Films, the fabulous folks who captured every beautiful moment, pretty much nailed it on the head when they highlight the gorgeous Bella Vita Ranch, the absolute heart-melting look on the groom’s face and most notably, the first dance. Seriously, these two own the dance floor. You bet I’m stashing this one away for future reference!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/75781202 600 338]

From Keepsake Films… It was such a joy to film Travis and LeeAnna’s wedding. While it was rustic and simple like most rural Texas weddings, the venue was on a level of sophistication that made you feel like you were in Napa or Tuscany! One thing that LeeAnna kept saying is that she didn’t want to rush through the day, and instead wanted to stop and enjoy the little moments. That was the key theme of their wedding film in the end- slowing down and enjoying the beautiful simplicity and genuine emotion of the day. LeeAnna and Travis got exactly what they were looking for on their wedding day—everything was calm, low-key, and so sweet.

This wedding was AMAZING because of:

1. The location at Bella Vita Ranch.
2. The look on Travis’ face as LeeAnna walks down the aisle.
3. Their first dance. I usually include a couple of clips but I had to include most of their dance because it was incredible.

And of course because of how truly nice LeeAnna and Travis were to work with! It makes my job easy when two people are so in love. Those were the moments that stuck out to me and made this film different than most! The details of their wedding were the perfect transition from summer to fall- the bridesmaids were in a light neutral while the house party attendants wore shades of coral. Their reception was sophisticated but not stuffy- everyone enjoyed sipping wine al fresco on the patio and dancing until midnight. People keep telling me this wedding looks like “a fairytale” and I would have to agree! LeeAnna and Travis shared such an amazing day with their friends and family.

Ontario Farm Wedding from Spread Love Events

This, my friends, is my dream wedding.  Seriously… I am NOT being hyperbolic.  This pretty little gem right here checks every box on my “dream wedding” list.  Fab location? Check. A fun-filled weekend? Check.  A whole lot of drop-dead gorgeous stylings from the masters at Spread Love Events? Check, check, check.  Add in the amazing planning skills of One Fine Day Events and one image after another of pretty captured by Rebecca Amber Photography and, well.  I’ve died and gone to wedding heaven, lovelies.  See it all right here in the full gallery.

From  Spread Love EventsWhen Natalie and Jeff hired Spread Love Events as their Event Stylists they had a clear vision in mind and we couldn’t wait to get started! They wanted the day to be a personal reflection of themselves and for friends and family to feel welcome and to use the day to not only celebrate the marriage of Natalie and Jeff, but for guests to recognize and celebrate the love in their own lives. Held on their private family farm in Ontario on Thanksgiving weekend, the atmosphere was intimate, elegant and inviting, with vintage details, farm-to-table cuisine, and sublte festive fall elements. Their day was the perfect combination of handmade details and luxury, full of love, joy, laughter and unforgetable moments.

From the Bride… We wanted a day that truly reflected who we were as a couple and made our closest friends and family feel welcome and comfortable. Jeff and I started out by finding ways that we could incorporate “us” into the day. Jeff is a builder, so we put his skills to use in making items for our wedding. We built our own containers for the flowers made from reclaimed wood that we found near our family’s summer home. Jeff built the bar using reclaimed barn board and up-cycled a stone countertop that one of his customers had decided not to use. In addition to these smaller projects, the barn was too small to hold all the guests we wanted to have, so he built an addition to the barn that added 750 square feet. We put so much of ourselves into the details of the day, and although it was a true labor of love, on our wedding day we truly felt that we had created exactly what we wanted: a beautiful venue surrounded by the people we really love.

There were so many moments during the planning process that were so special. One of the best for me was shopping for my dress at Gabriella Bridal in New York. We planned a mother-daughter weekend and were so fortunate to find the Jenny Packham dress of my dreams in our first trip. It was such a special time for my mom and I to share together.

The week leading up to the wedding was truly an all-out effort from our families, bridal party and vendors to make everything come together. My sister took on the role of site supervisor and directed rentals and set up crews like it was her job! Our mothers helped put all the little details together, like the s’mores packages, programs and filled candy jars. We also had a friend of ours bake mini cupcakes for us that were a hit with everyone.

The night of the rehearsal dinner we were able to take it all in and enjoy a casual evening with friends and family. We knew that no matter what happened the following day, we had put so much of ourselves into the day and were just so happy that after nearly five years together, we would be husband and wife.

On the day of our wedding I woke up and felt completely relaxed and ready to be a bride. Everything went so smoothly thanks to the help we had that it was honestly one of the most relaxing, yet exhilarating days either of us had ever experienced. When we did our first look out in the breezy field on the farm, it was as if we were seeing each other for the first time. I’ll never forget the smile on Jeff’s face and the feeling of pure joy that overcame us. From that time on, we had a lot of time to just hang out during the afternoon until the ceremony. There was no stress about timing or getting photos done. Everything just flowed as if it was totally natural. When my florist brought my bouquet to me, I started crying because it was the most beautiful collection of flowers I had ever seen. She understood exactly the look I wanted and went above and beyond what I expected.

When my dad and I walked down the aisle, I had one of my students who is a bagpiper, pipe us down the aisle to a traditional Scottish hymn. It was a surreal moment for my family and such a good way to honor our shared Scottish heritage. The ceremony was performed by one my colleagues, and included some beautiful readings and words of wisdom. After the ceremony, guests were served an apple cider bourbon cocktail in mason jars and hors d’oeuvres. Because we had done our photos earlier, after a few moments stolen away, Jeff and I were able to join our guests to celebrate.  After an incredible meal that included seasonal, fresh local ingredients, we got our guests up and outside where they greeted us to the dance floor with sparklers for our first dance to “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young. Everyone was ready to celebrate with us and we kicked off an amazing dance party that lasted to the wee hours. It was a day so perfectly made for the two of us, and we feel so blessed to have been able to create amazing memories that we will always cherish.

New Hampshire Campground Wedding from Kate Preftakes Photography

I am so obsessed with this wedding, I don’t even know what to say.  Seriously.  This New Hampshire beauty has me at such a loss for words, it’s crazy.  I guess that’s what happens when a team of fabulous vendors (think Exeter Flower ShopTangorra Wedding Planning  and Kate Preftakes Photography) join forces with a stunning bride and groom who seriously couldn’t be cuter (or happier).  Pure magic, lovelies.  Click here for more.

From Kate Preftakes Photography… Courtney and Jay were married on a gorgeous September day at Courtney’s grandparents’ campground. The couple lives in NYC but knew they wanted to have their wedding at this very special place where Courtney and her family have been spending summers since her childhood. This wedding had so many stylish and personal details. It was a marvelous mixture of antiques and modern beauty. I loved everything about this wedding. Courtney was not only gorgeous but calm and wonderful and kind. She and Jay are a perfect pair.

From the Bride… Growing up in CA we always spent the summer in NH at my grandparents’ house on Ayers Lake in NH. I enjoyed summers on the farm fishing, swimming, canoeing etc. When Jay and I started dating, I couldn’t wait to take him to NH. The first time he visited was Christmas years. We spent time with my dad, siblings and grandparents. Jay began to appreciate the tradition of the farm! We have so many special memories there at Ayers Lake. We love to explore my grandmother’s antiques in the barn, listen to her stories about growing up there and truly enjoy the fresh NH air. So when it came time to pick a place to get married we had no reservations! The farm is such a special place for us. We are getting married on the inlet where I used to fish with my grandfather, siblings and cousins. The birch Chuppa is from birch trees found on the property. Jay and his dad built it together this summer. Jay’s mom even planted the garden by the ceremony. We are incorporating so many family “touches” through the day. The cake topper was my grandparents’, Pat and Carolyn from 1950! Old milk jugs, crocks and boxes all came from out “digging” through the barn. We found such great treasures when searching through the barn. My grandmother said some items had not been touched for 100 years! It’s so fun to re-purpose the gems we found on the property.

Savannah Wedding from Jade and Matthew Take Pictures

Savannah is just pure magic. I’m convinced of that fact. And it only takes one little peek at all the pretty below to see precisely why I think weddings that take place in that southern city can do no wrong. With a lovely understated style and images from Jade and Matthew Take Pictures so pretty I could spend hours pouring through them – it goes without saying this gallery just made me fall in love with Savannah even more. See why here.

From the Bride…I fell in love with the gorgeous city of Savannah the same day Stephen and I met. He was stationed there with the 1/75 Ranger Battalion and I was on a last minute whirlwind weekend trip. I walked into the same bar he was at, tripped over a stage almost falling on my face while he was watching from across the room. I didn’t know it at the time, but we both fell head over heels that night. The whole thing is kind of serendipitous actually. Because as it turns out, Savannah almost perfectly parallels the qualities I love most about him–Warm, kind-hearted and charming with a dash of unexpected crazy fun! Because Savannah is where we met and fell in love it was the only place that seemed right to us begin our new chapter together.

Set in Virginia’s stunning farm land, it’s a day filled with whimsy and style, and so much pretty it could only be captured by miss Jodi Miller. Whimsical

From the Bride… We met through my cousin, Gerald, 8 years ago while we were both living in Charlottesville, Virginia. Gerald brought Connor along to my family’s 4th of July festivities, and we jokingly say that there were fireworks that day. We bonded that night over our love of cooking & crossword puzzles, and we spent the rest of the summer together. I headed off to my first year at the College of Charleston in August, while Connor stayed in Charlottesville to finish up his last year at UVA. When Connor decided to stay in Charlottesville for Law School, we somehow made it work thanks to Amtrak, I-95, & Skype. We visited each other almost every month for 4 years, spending Thanksgivings with his family and Christmases with mine, and were happy to finally graduate and settle down together in Charlotte, North Carolina.

I am quite a planner, so when we (finally!) got engaged at a Christmas Tree farm, and after our many happy phone calls to our family + friends, I e-mailed our photographer (Jodi Miller Photography) and venue (Panorama Farms) that night to see if they were available. Call me crazy, but after dating someone for 8 years, we knew a few very specific things we wanted right away. We also knew that having a wedding in Charlottesville over Memorial Weekend would be a popular time so we wanted to book our vendors as quickly as possible. Luckily we got our top picks! We could not have been happier with our “team”: Kyle at A. Dominick Events was my rock in keeping things organized, Gay and her team at A Pimento Catering created the tastiest and most beautiful food, Margaret at Panorama Farms made sure everything at the barn was set up properly, and Jenn with Sugar Magnolias created the most beautiful bouquets and arrangements.

My dress search was so much fun. I went with my sister, mother, and 3 aunts to a few bridal boutiques in Richmond around Christmas. I knew I wanted sleeves and pockets. The very first dress we saw when we walked in ended up being the one I got. I tried on about 30 that day, but fell in love with Watters’ “Escalante” for its very classic, elegant feel. I felt like a modern day Grace Kelly in it! I ended up purchasing it through a local bridal boutique, J Major’s in Charlotte; they were wonderful to work with! I made my birdcage veil, following different tutorials online. I also made the feather hair piece that detached from the veil so I could wear it in my hair through the reception. My earrings came from a friend’s boutique in Charlottesville, Darling, and my antique sapphire ring was a birthday gift from Connor a few years ago. I am so thankful for Claibourne of the Honeycomb Salon (one of my very first friends in Kindergarten!) for making us all look and feel gorgeous that day. She listened to what each of us wanted for our hair, and her makeup artist, Anna, made us look natural yet totally glam.

For our bridal party “look”, I didn’t want them to look too formal. I mean, it was a barn wedding after all! I told my girls to get any style dress in any shade of coral/pink. They all looked gorgeous, and I tied their look together with Kendra Scott’s Elle earrings in Turquoise. The boys wore their own khaki pants, white shirts, & navy blazers, while Connor wore a navy suit. I got the boys orange seersucker bow ties, and Connor a really colorful orange/pink one. I ordered Connor’s, the groomsmen’s, and my Dad’s bow ties from CCADesigns on Etsy. I got those monogrammed in town, which the boys loved. I also ordered matching peach bow ties from Divine Domestication on Etsy for our ring bearer and our “Best Dog” Bowser (our 11-pound Boston Terrier). They both looked beyond adorable!

Panorama Farms was the only venue we wanted, and when we saw it a month after we got engaged, we knew it would be the perfect place to say “I Do”. It is a blank canvas, and I was able to bring in a lot of different design elements that worked perfectly inside. Our ceremony took place on “The Hill”, with breathtaking views over the Blue Ridge mountains. We created a very cool fabric installation on the grapevine arch and the back of the ceremony chairs: I got various shades of peach and coral fabric from the scrap bin at the fabric store, and we cut them into strips along with some ivory ribbon and tied them together on burlap twine. The result was spectacular, especially when the wind was blowing. Another benefit to the barn is that we were able to string about 200 cafe lights under the rafters ourselves. Our families came out with us the day before our wedding to set it up, and the result was so worth the hard work.

Our ceremony was very important to us. A family friend officiated our ceremony, and we worked with him on customizing our ceremony wording, making it very personal. We acknowledged everyone who came near + far, our family members who have passed on with a moment of silence looking out over the mountains, and we had moving yet perfectly “us” readings: Connor’s sister read the Apache Blessing, and my cousin read A Lovely Love Story. We also wrote our own vows in secret. We kept the styles similar, so we wrote promises to each other. I can’t tell you how many of our guests said they teared up during our ceremony. I was definitely crying through most of it! One hilarious moment was when Connor and I had our first kiss. I had this bright, bold red lipstick on and our smooch left quite a mark on his mouth. Luckily my mother gave me an old handkerchief from my Granny, and I pulled it out of my (handy) pocket to wipe his red lips.

For our wedding, we wanted to have each city represented where our relationship grew. Our welcome bags included Cheerwine, Charleston Chews, and a Virginia is for Lovers sticker. Since food is such a big part of our lives, we worked hard to find a caterer that really listened to us and created a customized menu for us. We used A Pimento for both the rehearsal dinner and reception, where we featured southern staples like pulled pork & fixings, shrimp & grits, and fried green tomatoes. They were great to work with! They made sure we got to taste everything they prepared, and it was all so delicious. Perhaps the highlight of the evening (besides the flowing champagne) was our donut truck. We don’t really like wedding cake, so we went through cake alternatives until we found the perfect one: Carpe Donut food truck! They had the cutest red truck with colorful string lights, and they served hot coffee and organic apple cider donuts to our guests all night. They even made us a donut “cake” to cut into. Our guests rave about the donuts to this day!

Also, can we talk about how incredible our band was? We used the Bellevue Rhythmaires, a local bluegrass band, and they provided great feedback when it came down to deciding on our ceremony music. We chose a few fun songs: The boys walked in to “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis, my girls walked in to “Ho Hey” by the Lumineers, I walked down with my parents to “Here Comes The Sun” by the Beatles, and Connor & I recessed to “Wagon Wheel” by Old Crow Medicine Show. They led our guests in a 2nd line from the ceremony to the cocktail hour (about a 200 yard walk down the hill) to “I Will Wait” by Mumford & Sons. They also played a wonderful set through the cocktail hour, and our DJ (Davis Durrett of AAA Disc Jockeys) continued through the evening. Our last song was the epic 80’s ballad, “Don’t Stop Believin’ ” by Journey. After that, I did a quick wardrobe change into a fabulous sparkly gold sequin dress and we ran through a shower of sparklers to our limo with a bottle of champagne and donuts. It was perfect!

Connor and I are both pretty crafty, so we worked on many projects during our 17-month engagement:
• We made coasters made from our guests’ RSVP postcards with advice written on them that were set out on the cocktail tables under the barn. Our guests loved seeing all the different advice!
• I created a logo (the barn + our initials) with one of my bridesmaids who has a graphic design background, and we incorporated that into our invitations, koozies, and all of our signage.
• We printed and assembled the invitations at home, with the help of our neighbors and wine.
• The burlap runners were trimmed with fabric I purchased in India over Christmas.
• We purchased blank cornhole boards from a guy at our farmer’s market, and I primed and painted them freehand.
• For a guestbook alternative, I painted 3 canvases with Virginia, North Carolina, & South Carolina gold with a red heart over our favorite cities in each state. It made great art for our walls!
• We made the chalkboard sign with a layout of the barn, so our guests could find the bathroom or donut truck at any point throughout the night.
• I found a few things on the street in our neighborhood, like the window frames. I strung baby photos with burlap twine & gold spray painted clothespins, and we hung them on the door frame under the barn.
• I also found an old easel, painted it white and added chalkboard paint to both sides. This was used at our ceremony in lieu of programs.
• Connor’s dad made the wood slices we put under the tent.

Our wedding was literally the best day of our life. It was totally surreal to see how it all came together after almost 18 months of planning! We had the best time, and all of the hard work definitely paid off. We are quite enjoying our little married life together in Charlotte.

Perfect Easy Mashed Potatoes

Surprisingly, mashed potatoes are one of those things that can go very wrong, very quickly. Whether they’re too lumpy, too creamy, or far too dry, as a self proclaimed mashed potato nut, there’s not much else that ruins a good meal like sub-par taters. Over the last little while we’ve made it our mission to uncover the best of the best. And, honestly, this version is SO easy, SO stress free, and basically bordering on perfection. You can’t go wrong!

Perfect Mashed PotatoesA classic dish that's sure to be a crowd pleaser
prep time
20 Minute/s
cook time
20 Minute/s
total time
40 Minute/s
Serves 10Ingredients
  • 3 pounds potatoes (either russet or yukon gold), peeled and chopped into 1 inch cubes
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup butter, sliced into 1" pads
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tsp of salt + more to taste (start with 1 and add more as you see fit)
  • 1/2 tsp pepper + more to taste
Instructions
  1. Boil potatoes for about 20 minutes until just tender. Drain and return to pot. Add in your butter. Using a potato masher for a lumpy version or a ricer for a smooth variety, begin mashing your potatoes. This part is up to you and how creamy or chunky you like your potatoes! And if you're short on time, whip out that electric mixer, no shame in that!
  2. After potatoes are mostly mashed, add in your butter, sour cream, milk and 1 tsp + 1/2 tsp pepper. Blend to completely combine. Now taste, taste and taste again. Add salt 1/4 of a teaspoon at a time until you feel like it's just right. Add milk until you reach your desired consistency. A little extra milk is okay as you'll be reheating the next day and that extra moisture will evaporate.
  3. Bring to room temperature and store overnight. When reheating, the best approach is to heat in a double boiler, adding in a bit more milk or cream if needed.

Provence Wedding Inspiration from Lavender and Rose, Picture Perfect Photography + Feather and Stone

A Provence sunset, wild, beautiful flowers, a ridiculously good looking couple in beautiful attire… if this is striking a cord with you at all (and really, I’d be surprised if it wasn’t) you’re about to flip. Picture Perfect Photography captured this wedding inspiration, put together by Lavender and Rose, and I’m calling today the best day ever. Enjoy.

From the photographer… I would like to present you a styled wedding shoot which was part of Feather and Stone Field trip workshop in southern France last September. I met their wonderful talented photographers but I also admired and fell in love with the unique picturesque scenery of Provence’s landscapes.

The shooting took place in a beautiful venue called Hameau des Baux nestled between the hills next to Arles and surrounded by stretches of olive trees and rows of tall, tight cypresses. Kerry and Jennifer from Lavender & Rose Weddings styled wonderfully everything and Charlotte’s gown designed by Zahavit Tshuba added a touch of elegance and glamour.

Charlotte’s beauty, grace, her gorgeous smile and easy-going character made her the perfect model. On the other hand Gian Marco as one real Italian guy dazzled us all with his charm and sensitivity. They were both so emotional and in love and eager to kiss and hug each other that they barely paid attention to the photographers around taking pictures of them.

The sweet smell of lavender and wild flowers and the mistral wind blowing from the mountains over the hills made it look like a dream. The very special almost magical light of Provence’s sunsets made our film pictures look like drawings.

Classic New York City Wedding from Caroline Yoon Fine Art Photography

I swear, this wedding is an absolute dream. I haven’t stopped thinking about it since the moment it hit our inboxes, and I am beyond excited that today is the day I finally get to share it with all of you. Because, lovelies, this one is a stunner. With seriously perfect images from Caroline Yoon Fine Art Photography and style that will stand the test of time, this gallery is just beyond. See it all here.

From the Bride…Our wedding was simply an extension of our style as a couple. Some might call us “old fashioned” but we prefer to say “classic.” Neither of us grew up in NYC but it is the place where we both went to college, met and fell in love and made our first home together. We were married at our parish church, just a few avenues away from our apartment and the restaurant where we had our first date! Afterwards, we celebrated at a converted carriage house in the West Village that had been decorated in an eclectic, vintage style very similar to our apartment, albeit on a grander scale. We wanted our 80 guests to feel like they had been welcomed to our home for a dinner party as opposed to an impersonal banquet hall. We surprised everyone with a grilled cheese food truck waiting on the street after the reception. I had ordered grilled cheese on our first date so we thought it a fitting end to our wedding. At the end of the night, I held my new husband’s hand as we walked into the crowded lobby of the Waldorf. The entire room began clapping and cheering for us. It all still feels like the loveliest of dreams. By being true to ourselves, our wedding exuded a natural comfort. I have never felt more happy or loved than I did on that very special day.

Tampa Bay Wedding from Debra Eby Photography

This is one of those days where every perfect detail you’ve ever dreamt of comes together in one fabulous wedding.  Where a gorgeous Vera Wang stands hand in hand with lush florals from FH Weddings and a modern meets classic vibe planned by Elan Event Studio that is all kinds of amazing.  This, my friends, is what we’re calling a “serious lesson in pretty” and you can see every last moment captured by Debra Eby right here in the full gallery.

And a little something special from 829 Films?  Yes, please.

From Debra Eby Photography… Bridesmaids float in their blush Lazaro gowns doting on the bride in all her Vera Wang splendor. The VIP suite of the Grand Hyatt offers a light-filled space for laughter and tears as the girls prepare. Gifts, stories, and sentimental smiles are shared generously.

Holding to tradition, Ryan and Rachel’s first look is on the aisle as they wed. Emotion fills the sanctuary as friends and family stand. Rachel walks on air, as if in a dream, to her groom. The stained glass windows let in streams of sunlight on this perfect Florida day.

There is a quiet understanding in the love shared between Ryan and Rachel. They are full of flirtatious glances and stolen kisses. Ryan elicits beaming smiles of his bride. Rachel’s touch rouses a blush on her groom’s debonair face.

The sun sets over the bay, Ryan and Rachel begin the wedding celebration. The atmosphere is a cocktail party denoting suave elegance. A James Bond esque affair swimming with black, white, and golds. City lights twinkle as the bride and groom dance in each other’s arms.

The perfect beginning to a perfectly dreamy happily ever after.

Maui Wedding from Wendy Laurel

I’ve heard a lot of true love tales in my day, but this darling duo’s sweeter than sweet story?  It just about takes the cake.  Because this is a bride who knows a good catch when she sees it, and the result is a fairytale romance all culminating in one crazy gorgeous Maui wedding.  I’m talking a Ritz Carlton love fest, complete with pretty, pretty images from Wendy Laurel and a whole lot of happy.  See it all right here in the full gallery.

From Wendy Laurel… Drea and Brian have the cutest love story. The couple met during the Boston Marathon. Drea was there cheering on friends (she lived a few blocks away) when she saw Brian run by. Without thinking, she threw her keys at her friend and climbed over the fence (over the objections of a policeman) and started running with Brian. She ran with him in the last mile, until the finish chute when she had to run to the sidelines and climb out over another fence… over the objections of another policeman.

At the finish, Brian looked around for the cute girl who had run with him. There were a ton of people and he didn’t have any luck finding Drea. Drea, meanwhile, was searching for her friend with her keys and looking for Brian, too. They missed each other though. They both decided to head home, and on the way home, they found each other. Turns out they only lived a couple blocks away from each other, both right near the marathon finish. And the rest, as they say, is history.

They had a beautiful wedding at the Ritz Carlton Kapalua. From their ceremony on a bluff overlooking the ocean to their private restaurant reception, it was lovely.
