This Bride Interned with a Celebrity Wedding Planner

It warms our hearts and makes us giddy to share your soirees every day. This Bride? Definitely turned on all the good feels. Being the little girl that dreamt of her wedding, she went on to intern for a celebrity wedding planner in high school. From the Bride… Anyone that knows me even just a little bit knows that I am the epitome of a bride that has been planning her wedding since she was a little girl. So much so that I even interned for celebrity wedding planner David Tutera during my senior year of high school, which only further primed me for my time as a bride-to-be. From the very moment that Jerry and I got engaged in breathtaking Sedona, Arizona, I could NOT wait to start planning the wedding of my—now our—dreams. And while our engagement did not take place in New York, the remainder of our love story, and wedding, is quintessentially a New York one. Jerry and I met on a cold winter night in January 2013 at La Cava Wine Bar in Manhattan, and despite it being after 1:00 AM in Midtown East of all places (the last place I would have ever thought I’d find my husband), the rest, as they say, was history.

Jerry and I sat down and brainstormed words that we hoped our spring 2016 wedding would embody: romantic, elegant, classic, sophisticated, and timeless – and while I may be biased, I must say that our wedding was all of the above. On top of that, Jerry and I really wanted to make sure that two additional themes were woven into every detail of our day: springtime and New York. After one jam-packed weekend of visiting venues, Jerry and I knew we had found THE one: Bourne Mansion in Oakdale, New York. The over-the- top historic mansion and its grounds complimented our wedding vision perfectly and set the stage for all of the other details to come.

I knew I wanted to play up neutral tones, especially since the venue served as such a timeless and elegant backdrop for our day, and I thought that bright colors would take away from that. We ended up choosing a dreamy, romantic, and spring color palette of white, cream, blush, champagne, and lots of mixed metallics. With that, I wanted to make sure we incorporated a lot of fun texture since our overall color palette was more muted. An important display of our color palette came down to our bridesmaids’ dresses, and I knew very early on that I did not want my girls in identical gowns. My eight bridesmaids ended up in stunning array of Jenny Yoo dresses representing a total of four colors (champagne, blush, gold, and pewter), three different fabrics (chiffon, tulle, and liquid charmeuse) and seven unique styles.

From there, it was easy to incorporate our color palette into every remaining aspect of the wedding: white and blush flowers, cream and champagne textured linens, gold and silver mercury candles and picture frames, and the list goes on and on. My absolute favorite part of wedding planning—albeit it was also the most stressful for me—was incorporating unique details and elements into our day. While it was really important to us that our wedding be traditional, I also wanted to make sure there were elements our guests had not seen before. For this, I relied heavily on bridal magazines and blogs (hello Style Me Pretty!) and Pinterest for inspiration and then Etsy for execution.

The very first detail I always knew I wanted to include was a custom monogram for our day. For as long as I could remember, I have always been obsessed with monograms, and for the first time in my life, I was able to put my initials side-by- side with my husband’s, which to me, was a really romantic display of our lives coming together on that day. I worked with an incredibly talented graphic designer from the non-profit I worked at to bring my vision to life. From there, we used the monogram, which had our first initials (S & J) in cursive enclosed by a laurel wreath, anywhere and everywhere: all printed materials (invitations, welcome bag tags, ceremony programs, and menus), cocktail napkins, drink stirrers, and even decorative pillows that were placed throughout the mansion in various lounge areas. This tied our wedding together beautifully and enabled us to have a cohesive brand for the day.

Another of my favorite décor elements was all of the wooden laser cut signs we incorporated. For starters, I found an amazing Etsy vendor, NarWall, that created a custom seven foot sign (yup, huge!) with our last name that was hung from the balcony in the ballroom and served as a backdrop for our photos – we were sitting directly in front of it at a King’s Table with our entire bridal party and their dates. Jerry and I decided to abandon the traditional sweetheart table and instead had a 28-person table running down the middle of the ballroom, at which we sat at the head overlooking the entire reception. To further ensure this table was a focal point in the room, our florist, Bride & Blossom, did an incredible job creating a garland filled with Italian ruscus, seeded eucalyptus, and lemon leaf with cream and blush peonies and garden and spray roses sprinkled throughout. The garland, coupled with silver mercury cylinders and votives and dozens of candles, created an incredibly romantic and regal look.

Since we were getting married at the end of April and Bourne Mansion had a stunning outdoor space in the back, we wanted to make sure we utilized this during cocktail hour. To honor a favorite pastime of Jerry’s, we created a bocce court in the back, complete with a wooden sign that read “Bocce Ball” and using our monogrammed bocce ball set that was gifted to us for our engagement. Another of my favorite projects was creating our hotel welcome bags, which we wanted to ensure screamed New York. To achieve that, we included some of our favorite New York products: Brooklyn Brewery beer (where we had our first date!), Original New York Seltzer’s naturally flavored soda, North Fork Chips, KIND bars, and New York Mets swag (where my husband works). All of these were stuffed into tote bags designed by me that had a map of New York State on it with the words “From New York, With Love”.

Last but certainly not least, my something borrowed was a gorgeous opal ring that belonged to Jerry’s late mother and that I wore on my right hand the entire day, honoring her and the incredible man that she gave me.

The most special of moments had to be when my 15-year- old niece, Kaya, sang Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years” with our band during the reception. While we asked her to perform at our wedding, the song she chose and rehearsed for months was a complete surprise, and it was an incredibly emotional moment for us all.

Now for the unplanned, when Jerry and I entered the ballroom for our grand entrance, we were not only greeted by all of our loved ones, but also by ourselves: custom fathead cutouts of our faces were floating in the crowd, courtesy of our friends Abby and Sean. Jerry and I could not get over just how funny this was, and the entire night, the fatheads were being passed around the dance floor. Even nine months later, our guests still talk about just how funny and fun that was!

My advice… Whether you are engaged for over two years like we were or just a few months, try and enjoy the planning process, together. While it wasn’t always easy, my husband and I learned so much more about one another along the way, and it only strengthened our relationship and now marriage. At the end of it all, I could not have imagined a more perfect day and a more perfect man to marry, and we cannot thank the talented vendors enough that helped ensure our vision became a reality.

A Classic Navy + Greenery-Filled Wedding

Meghan and Sean’s love story began in high-school but fast forward 10 years and you’ll see their long-awaited wedding day that was nothing short of perfect. They prioritized involving their 5-year-old daughter in the celebration, and she even hand-painted their table numbers made with love. Photographed by Ashley Caroline, this is one gallery you don’t want to miss.

From Ashley Caroline PhotographyMeghan + Sean’s day was very special. Together, they have the sweetest 5-year-old daughter, Molly. It was evident throughout the day that she is not only the light in their lives but in so many close family and friends as well. Molly painted the table “numbers” and was so excited to show everyone her adorable artwork. It was a lovely personal touch. The day was beautiful from the bride + groom table full of candles to the greenery covering the tables and the portraits at golden hour. The bride’s J. Crew dress stunned everyone. It was a lovely day with the best trolley ride and I couldn’t wait to share it with you. My favorite moment was towards the end of the night when the groom serenaded the bride. He sang a song and played on his guitar and it was the sweetest moment.

From the Bride… Sean and I met freshman year of high school in keyboarding class, and although we would both later admit to an immediate mutual crush, we didn’t start dating until the summer before our senior year of college. We had run into each other at a dive bar one random, fateful night; I was there with my sister, who had recently gone through a breakup and Sean had gotten dragged out of bed by a friend in search of love. Sean was wearing gym shorts and black mid-calf socks under sandals – I thought no one had ever looked better. I’ll never forget how happy I was to see him, a happiness I have felt seeing him thousands of times since. Sean swears that he was the first one to text after that night, and I’m certain that the opposite is true, but we both agree that the summer that followed was one of the best of our lives. After 7 years of friendship and 3 of dating, we entered into our next and greatest adventure: parenting. Molly was born on a warm, sunny day in the middle of September. She has Sean’s eyes, my smile and both of our love for laughter and music.

Our wedding day was also on a warm, sunny day in September, 5 years later. Our wish was to have a day that was just bursting at the seams with love, and I am very happy to say that that wish was granted. We got married in the church where my Father grew up, a church where we said goodbye to my Grandpa earlier this year. Being there as a family again, celebrating a birth of sorts, was a beautiful, emotional experience. We took our pictures in Bayard Cutting Arboretum, where my brother’s wedding pictures were taken, and then headed over to the reception in our trolley. The party was held at The Snapper Inn on the south shore of Long Island, in an open air gazebo overlooking the water. I will never forget the feeling of the breeze drifting in and out as we ate dinner at our candlelit table and looked around at 200 of our favorite people, wishing we could hold onto these treasured moments as they passed by relentlessly. Although there were many moments I loved, it is easy to say that the highlight of the night was listening to Sean play “This Must be the Place” by Talking Heads. He sings and plays so beautifully and it was a true moment in time, seeing him share that talent with the people we love.

While we were on our honeymoon in Italy I said to Sean that the greatest gift we could have given to our friends and family on our wedding is to have a night where they can forget about work or obligations and just simply celebrate love. The greatest gift to us was looking around at these wonderful people, people who have been there for many milestones in our lives, and seeing the pure joy they felt in being there, being present, and frankly, tearing UP the dance floor. We don’t get to experience joy that way on a daily basis and it is such a beautiful reminder of how much we need love and need each other. It was a bit difficult coming back to reality after a night like that, but to steal a line from our wedding song, “I guess we’ll just begin again.”

Glam Meets Gatsby For This Romantic Mansion Wedding

I’m not surprised this Bride has a background in fashion – just take one look at that dress! But the glamour didn’t stop there – it continued throughout her Gatsby-inspired celebration – and Ciro Photography captured it all! Head to our Vault to see all the dress pics and more from this Long Island summer soirée!

From the Bride… Moses and I have known each other since high school, but our story really started after college. Superbowl ’93 and ’94 rivals brought us back together, after many conversations of who has the better team. Go Bills!

Before getting engaged, I never imagined what my dream wedding would be like. Moses and I both have a love for 1920’s Gatsby fashion, so we knew we wanted our wedding to have that feel. We did a lot searching online for the perfect venue and after many visits to other venues, we finally found the Bourne Mansion. The Bourne Mansion used to be the Singer (sewing) family’s mansion and since I went to school for fashion in New York City and we wanted our wedding to feel like a big Gatsby party, it was a perfect match.

Getting married in New York opened up our options to some amazing vendors. First, our band, the East Coast from OmniPop Talent Group. OmniPop Talent Group was so great to deal with, extremely communicative and made the process incredibly easy and the East Coast band made our wedding! We got so many compliments and praise about their performance. Secondly, our florist, Flowers By Brian, made our venue come to life. The arrangements were stunningly beautiful. Last but certainly not least, our photographer, Rich Ciro from Ciro Photography who captured our day so beautifully. As we were going through each picture we were brought back to the moment and got to relive the day! We couldn’t have asked for a better photographer. His attention to detail in refining every single picture is amazing. And not to mention the thoughtfulness and artwork that was brought to each picture.

Elegant Winter Wedding at the Bourne Mansion

I had an image of what winter weddings look like and this elegant celebration blew that idea out the window. Held at the stunning Bourne Mansion, the ceremony was outside with the florals and beauty of the bride’s dress showing off gorgeously against the crisp winter skies. Robert And Kathleen worked their magic and caught it all and these photos have me completely rethinking winter weddings from now on.

From Robert And Kathleen Photographers… When Jenna and Alex first met, it could have been the perfect time for the start of a romance. They were living in the same state, in the same city, on the same campus even, both students at Yale. They were going through a similar life experience, she was in her second year while he was a junior. Both of them trying to navigate the tricky terrain of college life while simultaneously laying a solid pathway to their future careers. They understood one another and knew how to make each other laugh. They would smile when they saw one another and, if things had been different, they could have sparked a relationship back then, connecting over coffee on campus or having a first date at one of the famous pizza places in New Haven. But in that point of their lives, while the logistics may have seemed perfect, the timing just wasn’t right.

Two years later, Jenna received an unexpected email. It was Alex, reaching out to reconnect. He wanted to see how she was doing and, though he didn’t say it, he was looking to see if there was the potential to now turn that friendship into something more. By all accounts, that should have been an inconvenient time to start a romance. They were living in two different states, in two different cities, nearly 100 miles apart. They were going through two different experiences. Jenna was finishing up school in Connecticut while he was embarking on his career in New York City. They could have been discouraged about the idea of a long distance relationship, with train rides and heartfelt conversations over the phone rather than face to face. But in that moment, at that point in their lives, the timing was perfect. They enjoyed the long phone conversations getting to know one another in this new light. They looked forward to the train rides because with each inch of track they traveled they were getting closer to one another. When Jenna graduated, she enrolled in medical school in New York. Finally, they were in the same city again. Now they were living a shared life experience, navigating the road of young adulthood side by side.

A few years later, Alex bought Jenna a ring. He had known that he wanted to marry her since shortly after they reconnected so many years before. Now it was just a matter of finding the perfect time to ask the question. He booked a room at the Palace Hotel, planning to ask Jenna in their gorgeous courtyard. Only when he arrived that day, he found that the courtyard was covered in scaffolding. But he didn’t let that discourage him. The timing might have seemed wrong, there may have been obstacles in his way, but that had never stopped them before and he wasn’t about to let it now. He arranged for a beautiful suite in the hotel and when Jenna arrived he dropped down to one knee and asked her to be his wife. Just as she had years before, Jenna said yes. Yes to the man who started out as her friend and turned into so much more. Yes to the life they had started to build together. Yes to the future that she began to dream of so many years before when she received that unexpected email from the guy who always knew how to make her smile.
