See Why We Love This Completely Non-Traditional NYC Wedding

When the floral designer behind Maiden Kind became a bride, she and her love knew a city celebration was in order. But rather than elope, they chose the next best thing – a wedding inspired by an intimate dinner party. They scaled down the guest list, reined in the details and focused on the love, plain and simple. D’Arcy Benincosa captured each and every moment you’ll adore, epic first look included.

From The Bride…When Nick and I got engaged, we knew immediately that we wanted our wedding to air on the smaller side. Intimacy felt really important to us and we wanted to be able to really focus on one another. We also knew that a New York City location was a must, since we met in our East Village apartment building and consider NYC our home. We began planning a 75 person wedding which we thought was small wedding. But we found ourselves quickly loosing sight of what was important to us- each other. It became too much about the details and making everything perfect. Now don’t get me wrong, I love a big wedding and all of its details- I’m a wedding florist after all! But when it came down to planning my own wedding, I realized it just wasn’t for me. After considering eloping, we came to the conclusion that it was absolutely essential to be surrounded and witnessed by our immediate families. An intimate dinner party was in order.

The Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg, Brooklyn had always been my dream venue. But with our original 75 people, their ballroom would have been too large. But in the end it worked perfectly! We rented one of their suites overlooking the Manhattan skyline for our ceremony and dinner. It was truly the best location and setup. The Wythe was incredible to work with and it really felt like a wedding…Just a tiny one! Plus their wine selection and menus were amazing.

Since we didn’t have a bridal party, we didn’t really think too much about color palette too much. We drew slightly from the environment, as we knew there would be the Wythe’s signature blue and white toile wallpaper, hopefully a sunset over Manhattan and lots of brick!  We bought Nick’s suit first and wanted it to be something that he’d wear countless times. We chose a blue suit with very subtle pinstripe. I also felt that since our wedding was going to be intimate, I would want to be comfortable and non-fuss. I actually didn’t spend too much time on dress hunting. I went to J.Crew and then spotted my Rosa Clara in a magazine and went on a mission to find it.  It had the sophisticated, urban appeal that I was after and I didn’t have to worry about extra tricep presses since it had long sleeves! For jewelry I wore my mother’s gold locket that she actually wore on her wedding day. It houses a baby picture of me and my sister. So that felt really special. If I have a daughter someday, I hope she’s want to wear something of mine on her wedding day. I also carried my grandmother’s handkerchief with me. It was beautiful and absolutely essential.

My mom, mother-in-law and sister helped me do the florals and it was truly the most fun!! We didn’t have a palette in mind when we arrived at the flower market. But we ended up choosing colors that mirrored my Mociun engagement ring. Everyone always asks, “did you find it stressful to be the bride and the florist?!” It wasn’t stressful…But that’s probably because I wasn’t flowering for a full-sized wedding! If that were the case, I would have hired out!

One thing we did splurge on were photos. Photography is really important to both of us and we wanted someone to capture the emotional aspects of our day. D’Arcy Benincosa was a perfect match for us and we were so glad we flew her out from Utah for our day. She also shot our engagement photos, they are fabulous!

My favorite part of our wedding was the ring warming ceremony during our ceremony. We played a beautiful piece of music by Andrew Bird and our rings were passed amongst our family members. They each held our rings for a moment while they infused them with love and well wishes for our future. It was so moving, I highly recommend it if you’re thinking about a small wedding.

We didn’t offer traditional favors. But we did bring gifts for our parents. As a way to thank them for getting us to this point in our lives. Nick and I were both born in 1985 and I’ve travelled to The Loire Valley in France with my family, so we gifted them each of bottle of 1985 Chinon. They loved the thoughtful gesture…And the wine too.

We were on the fence about having a wedding cake,as we hadn’t seen anything that really spoke to us. We would have been satisfied with desserts from the Wythe. But I’m sure glad we opted for cake because it was one of the most fun things we planned! I honestly don’t remember exactly how this came about…but at the time I was “internet pals” with the incredible food blogger Molly Yeh – who is known for her cakes with marzipan cutouts. We got to chatting about her coaching me to bake my own wedding cake and it turned out that she was actually in town a few weeks before our wedding. So I chose her recipe for chocolate tahini cake with tahini buttercream frosting and I baked the layers before she arrived. Then we assembled and decorated it together in my Brooklyn kitchen. Well, she did most of the decorating while I tried to soak up as much cake knowledge as possible. I am obsessed with pigs, and if I was ever going to have a wedding cake it would have to feature two piggies in love (dream cake)! Plus, it added a really playful element to our evening!

You Need to See this Fresh Take on Pantone’s Color of the Year

We’ve seen lots of ideas for how to use Pantone’s colors of the year (serenity and rose quartz), in your wedding, but this may be the best idea yet: a serenity blue wedding dress. Pair it with a soft white flowers and organic inspired details for a wedding day as elegant as you are! Head to The Vault for lots of inspiration courtesy of Mallory Dawn Photography and Just a Kiss Weddings and Events!

From Mallory Dawn PhotographyThis romantic and soft wedding shoot was inspired by the clean crisp look of the Lombardi House in Los Angeles, California. We wanted to bring a warmth and softness to this venue yet keep the elegance flowing. We decided that in lieu of a traditional white wedding dress, we would bring color to the venue by having our bride wear a pastel tulle gown handmade in Naberezhnye Chelny, Russia. To compliment this stunning piece we had our groom wear a classic navy suit. With the Lombardi House as a blank canvas, our florals were imperative in adding to the tastefulness and overall timeless grace. We focused on a neutral color palette, sincere emotions, and accentuating natural beauty.

From Julia Park Photography And CinemaWe drew our inspiration from the historical Langdon Hall itself. It’s a beautiful Victorian Era Summer residence converted into a Country House Hotel and Spa . It’s such a unique place where old and new come together. They just opened a brand new wedding venue – “Firshade” room. We featured it in our shoot as well as my personal favourite – their Orchard Suite! Such a perfect place for a bride to get ready! That room has so much character and history: being there makes you feel like you escaped to Europe!

This Couple Said “I Do” On the Same Date They Met 22 Years Earlier

If the glow from this ceremony’s cackling fire doesn’t warm your heart, this Bride and Groom’s story and vision for their big day will: a small, immediate-family-only celebration in Kentucky. With a fireside ceremony, candles everywhere and a color palette of marsala, silver and gold, this gorgeous Bride and Groom became husband and wife on the same date they had met 22 years earlier. See all the heartwarming moments in The Vault courtesy of Conrhod Zonio Photography!

From The Bride…When Brad and I decided to marry we envisioned a small wedding, immediate family only, in our home state of Kentucky. Life and work had taken us away but home to us was still Kentucky with its beautiful horse farms, southern people and where all our families lived. We are so thankful we found GlenLary Estate. It is the most beautiful working horse farm with a southern plantation house and cabin that enabled all family to comfortably stay the night after the wedding and celebrate to our hearts content. Our planner, Alicia with Great Expectations, truly took care of everything and created exactly what I envisioned and more for a small intimate winter wedding with an abundance of flowers in marsala, silver and gold, candles and firelight. We couldn’t have been more delighted with every detail, especially the beautiful sitting room where the ceremony was held in front of the fireplace, and above all how kind and attentive everyone was to us and our families from the moment we arrived. We were able to truly celebrate together in the most gorgeous and relaxed setting. We wanted a full reception dinner and it was delicious. We had hoped for a little snow for our winter wedding and boy did Mother Nature deliver!!! Everything went as originally planned and we were able to say I Do on the day we met 22 years prior. Our families said it was the most beautiful, relaxed and intimate wedding they had ever attended. They loved being able to spend the day together getting ready, having the estate all to ourselves, truly enjoying the ceremony and dinner and each other.

This Welcome Dinner Takes It To The Next Level

There’s no denying it; as SMPers we get to be a part of some pretty fabulous things but at the tippy top of that list? Traveling to the beautiful countryside of Mexico and participating in Jose Villa’s Workshop last fall. With Easton Events, Mindy Rice, Studio by Fleur, Casa de Perrin and more coming together, we were left beyond inspired. In honor of the 2016 Workshop Announcement – and the last one at the legendary Hacienda – we’re looking back at all the beauty starting with this Welcome Dinner, thanks to Jose’s amazing images of it all. This week is off to one great start if we do say so ourselves…

From Mindy RiceWhen designing the Welcome Party at the hacienda, I took in the location as the main source of inspiration. Situated in the old grain room, the colors of the walls and floor reminded me of a more Colonial time in Mexico. A long, family style table fit the space beautifully as the natural light spilled in through the large iron doors. Lynn, Augusta (Easton Events) and I decide on blue as the evening color…. a rich dusty blue linen was designed with simple inverted pleats on each of the corners allowing the linen to hang with a weighty drape! The color was inspired by the aged blue paint you see in the small village of El Carmen. Flickering candles melted freely and vines were added to the brick crevices- all of these details added a sense of time to this already historic setting!

For floral, I used my collection of antique pewter troughs and ornate finials with pewter floral detailing. The fresh floral consisted of delicate blue hydrangea, Loquats, wild millet, guava branches, delphinium and blue forget-me-nots. A vine that grows freely on the hacienda was added, giving the table a softer, more organic look.

Our generous napkins with a hand crochet, lace edge, were dramatic as they spill off the table. Filligris, silver rings gathered each of the Jan Barboglio napkins giving the table a refined look.

Casa de Perrin supplied the beautiful dishes, flatware and glassware for the evening. The charger plate, hand glazed in soft white with a delicate scalloped edge, was stunning under the clean silhouette of the Heath dinner plate. The cutlery in pewter, was timeless and so pretty placed on the blue linen! Simple cut crystal glassware and salt pinches reflected off the various candles as guest dined.

Amber Moon designed the most darling fold out menus. Each letter pressed with an organic motif in a dusty grey/blue hue. A delicate hemp thread tied each closed… like a gift for each guest.

Consider this the CliffsNotes to Throwing a Killer Party

It’s all about pineapples and great cocktails and comfort food, among other things, and Liz Martin of Charleston Weekender is breaking it down. You are 9 easy steps away from pulling off a really killer party. The kind that friends talk about for years and the kind that will leave you in all out summertime bliss. It’s coming people, the warm weather get togethers that is, and this inspiration shot by Rachel Red Photography will have you party ready.

Any excuse is a great one for a party in my book! If you love to entertain, here are a few easy tips on how to put together a lovely soiree without all of the spending and stress. Elaborate recipes, fancy china, and grandmother’s silver won’t be necessary. Stick to these tips and you can treat your guests to an evening of “casual elegance”. No stuffiness allowed!

Keep everyone entertained and occupied.

I’m notoriously a last minute hostess, no matter how early in the day I begin prepping. Keeping your guests entertained makes you both feel more relaxed. Opt for a self-serve bar cart or a tray full of pre-poured beverages so you don’t have to abandon your last-minute meal prep as guests arrive. Then, keep everyone entertained with something fun; point them to the backyard for bocce, or have props displayed on a tray for a DIY smartphone photo booth while you put the finishing touches on dinner.

Make your guests feel cozy.

There is nothing that will send your guests home faster than having them feel uncomfortable. Even in the midst of summer, providing your guests with a wrap such as a Turkish towel on the back of their chair will have them feeling right at home. Make them feel like they can kick of their shoes while they are at it, with a basket of slippers by the front door. Repurpose your throw pillows as comfy accents for your outdoor furniture.

Stick with your forte, then ask for help with the rest.

No matter how much effort I put into cooking, it just isn’t going to wow anyone. I am ok with that, because I know my contribution to a fun party is providing a laid back atmosphere and fun decor. Save yourself the stress of doing it all on your own, and just focus on what you are good at. Enlist your friends who have a specialty and offer to return the favor for their next soiree. A friend who loves craft cocktails can make your beverages extra exciting, and you can provide your signature cupcakes for her next time.

Dazzle them with your decor.

As I mentioned, I’m no chef. Since I know my food isn’t going to win any awards, I like to surround my guests with decor that will elicit a smile. Start with a statement piece; an eccentric salad plate, such as the Owl from West Elm, immediately sets the tone for fun. Your “wow” could also be a graphic table runner, such as this handmade striped one from Ibu. Cocktail napkins or interesting glassware can create a laid back atmosphere as well. The One Hope glitter bottle of champagne is not only tasty; it also makes a great bar cart accessory AND benefits charities at the same time. And the verdict on fun straws? Yep, they are still “in”!

Plants or flowers are a must, & green goes with anything.

It isn’t a party without a centerpiece. Green truly livens any table, so consider creating a tablescape of your existing house plants or succulents. Did you know West Elm now carries succulents?! Stick with monochromatic vases, and plant cuttings will fit right in at the dinner table. Investing in living flora for your centerpiece will bring you enjoyment well beyond your get together. Ferns or orchids welcome!

Mix and match everything!

Pricey items pair perfectly with budget finds, like the navy dinner plates I used as chargers. They came from (gasp) WalMart, and have chipped far less often than the ones I originally registered for from a pricier store! Stools mixed with benches make for fun seating, and combining silver and gold in your cutlery and glassware will work just fine. Even your outfit can still wow your guests when you mix nice pieces with budget finds, such as pairing a lovely hostess gown from Society Social with fun earrings from H&M.

Personalize your party.

This is the age of the Evite, but taking the time to send hand written invitations or creating seating cards will add an extra dose of special to your soiree. It’s all in the presentation, so stick some place card flags into a small succulent for each guest or attach a little flag to their straw or wine stem.

Fabulous food doesn’t have to mean fancy!

Why not give everyone some comfort food to help them feel at home? Having a pizza party for grown-ups is always a good idea, or call in a local food truck to provide some festive dishes. Make it extra special with a DIY toppings station, and let your guests do the work of creating their perfect pizza pie. Thats amore!

Stuffiness is not allowed.

Whatever happens- be it very dry cornbread or burn holes in your porch (that really happened)- no one will notice as long as you provide them with genuine hospitality and make them feel welcome. A festive cocktail doesn’t hurt either. Cheers

She Wore Her Grandmother’s Wedding Dress

Can we just say how much we LOVE this idea! Instead of opting for the original engagement session, Rachel opted to do a Bridal session wearing not only her wedding gown, but also wearing her grandmothers (talk about sweet!). Filled with vintage inspired details, one gorgeous Bride-to-be, and fancy florals, Krista Turner Photography captured it all in The Vault!

From Krista Turner PhotographyI have a confession. As photographers, we place lots of emphasis on the importance of engagement shoots before the wedding day- get comfortable in front of the camera together, we tell couples. It’s vital to your wedding photos! But, I confess: when Rachel asked about foregoing the engagement shoot for a bridal session, I was thrilled at the chance to photograph something different.

And then, the icing on the cake: she wanted to wear not only her wedding dress, but her grandmother’s dress too- vintage and stunning and the same dress even her own mother wore thirty years ago- truly a family heirloom.. She also wanted to sneak in a few quick photos in the dress she’ll wear for her own wedding this fall, but Grandmother’s dress (and beautiful bride Rachel) were the stars of this show.

So we met in a private studio space in Atlanta, put on some Frank Sinatra, and pretended it was the 1940s again. Rachel’s grandmother’s dress was a stunning cream with the rounded shoulders, long sleeves, and a gorgeous train- perfectly fitting for a bride in the 40s. Rachel brought a few of her closest girlfriends and her mother, which made the afternoon feel especially meaningful. She even brought some old photographs of her grandmother in this beautiful dress; it was the sweetest way to involve her grandmother in her wedding day.

10 Pretty Things We Love About Occasions By Diana

With the motto “Never stop learning” and the mission to give brides a totally personal, 5-star experience, it’s no surprise Occasions by Diana is one of the best in the biz — not to mention one of our favorites! So today, we’re diving in to discover her insider secrets on proper pre-wedding beauty prep and the most important question to ask when hiring your big day beautician! Trust us, you’re going to want to write these down…

1. How did you get into wedding hair and makeup?

While previously working as a stylist in a salon I realized that the brides that would come in for styling weren’t necessarily getting the 5 star treatment I felt they deserved. I thought: it has to be easier, more precise, and definitely more special… and with that, my business was born. I eventually left the salon to fully focus on my brides along with some editorial work, and wouldn’t change it for the world.

2. What’s your personal motto, or a phrase that inspires you creatively?

Personally, my motto is “Never stop learning”. I am a believer that you must be open to the world around you at all times in order to be the best you. Whether it’s learning a new technique, about new cultural tradition, or something about yourself, being open to something new and different can be the next big step in your creative process.

3. Can you describe your aesthetic in three words?

Timeless, Classic, Glamorous.

4. What are three things you can’t live without?

Bobby Pins, Hairspray and Lipstick.

5. Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration from the 50’s and 60’s mostly. I adore the way women took so much pride in their appearance at that time. I love the simple, feminine yet strikingly confident appearance that a winged liner and red lip gives to a look. I also love the mixture of modern and vintage for a clean, classic styling that will surely remain timeless.

6. What’s your favorite social media platform?

Definitely Instagram, but I also love Pinterest. Both are able to inspire people to try something new, feel confident, and also find their personal style, which I think is amazing.

7. What is a hair and makeup detail that often gets overlooked, that you wish got more attention in the planning process?

I think that proper skin and hair preparation is often very overlooked during planning. It is really important to think about your hair and skin leading up to your big day as well as prep it properly for the day of application and styling. I love to set my brides in curlers (which also makes for cute photos) as well as have a yummy natural lip scrub and really luxurious moisturizer for them. Not only is a moment of relaxation before your busy and exhilarating day, it allows for a more glowy, healthy look that lasts all night.

8. What do you think is the most important question a client can ask, when deciding who to hire for their wedding hair and makeup?

A good stylist can bend and mold for their clients needs and desires, so a great question to ask is “What do you envision for my look?” Even if it doesn’t necessarily match what you were thinking, it can give you an insider view into their creative process, knowledge and ability to look at the big picture and your style together. Communication is definitely key for the beauty process. Talking about what you do and don’t like and looking at inspiration together is really important to build trust and be clear with one another.

9. What’s been your proudest professional accomplishment as a makeup artist?

My proudest professional accomplishment as a makeup artist would definitely be working as assistant to Deanna Hagan for Coca Cola’s new campaign- which you can see internationally on billboards, advertisements and all across the internet world. I learned so much on that project; I got to work with ridiculously talented creatives and do looks that are way different than my usual work. I feel so blessed to have been a part of it!

10. When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?

I love to spend time with my little family adventuring in different lands, driving cool classic cars, and laughing together till it hurts.

Can’t Keep Your Fiddle Leaf Fig Alive? Try These Tips!

Fiddle Leaf Figs are the it plant of the design world. And if you have a brown thumb like muah then this post is for you. Check out these seven simple tips and tricks from Melissa of Bisou Style for not killing that pop of green. And we’re throwing in a little inspiration for creating your own figgie moment too. Get ready to jump on the fiddle leaf fig bandwagon friends!

Word-Numbers_02 Keep your fig in plenty of indirect sunlight and rotate it to allow for even growth.

Word-Numbers_04 Let your tree dry out completely in between waterings. Make sure the top soil is dry to the touch before watering again. I usually give mine 1-2 cups of water per week depending on how dry it is—and don’t be afraid to dig your fingers in the soil to see how hydrated the roots actually are. Don’t let that top soil fool you! Water amount of course depends on your tree size, too.

Word-Numbers_06 Keep the leaves clean and free of dust. The cleaner your leaves are the more they can drink in the sun!

Word-Numbers_18 Trim any heavily browning or dead leaves from your tree. New baby leaves will grow in their place and fill out your tree nicely.

Word-Numbers_12 Fertilize your tree each month during spring and summer. Use a liquid fertilizer and dilute with half water.

Word-Numbers_15 Repot if your fig has outgrown it’s pot—or, remove top few inches of soil annually and refresh your plant with new soil.

Word-Numbers_23 During the warmer months, depending on your location and the size of your tree, you can bring it outdoors in a patio area as well for a pretty addition to an al fresco dinner!

This Couple’s Santa Barbara Wedding is the Ultimate Party

If there’s a couple that knows how to put on a party, it’s this gorgeous Bride and handsome Groom. As the Bride put it, “we wanted to create the party of our lives.” They did just that with their Santa Barbara wedding, which incorporated elements from the Bride’s childhood vacations in Mexico and a band that kept the party going all night. From The Bride…Andrew and I met in Santa Barbara at school our junior year at UCSB and our love grew from there. Funny thing is we lived in the same dorms freshman year and have many mutual friends but never crossed paths. Our mutual friend eventually introduced us junior year and the rest was history, I guess timing is everything. We fell in love and enjoyed friends, school, party’s and living Beach front in Santa Barbara. Andrew decided San Francisco would be where he desired to finish college with their amazing international business program. We did long distance for almost a year but as soon as I graduate I packed up my Honda Civic and moved to the wonderful city of San Francisco. We enjoyed everything the city had to offer…festivals, amazing food, night life and of course all the outdoor activities. This city will always hold a special place in our hearts because this is where Andrew proposed! We traveled the world together living in his mother’s hometown of Panama for 4 months. This was the most amazing time of our lives and it was amazing to feel the love and culture and how proud of Andrews Panamanian culture we are.

Andrew and I envisioned an outdoor wedding with live entertainment, surrounded by friends and family’s laughter. Andrew and I desired a beautiful classic Santa Barbara style wedding in the town where are love first started. Santa Barbara has a beautiful Spanish style feel to it which we love. I grew up with a beach house in Mexico and have always loved the style culture and beauty. We feel in love with the Santa Barbara museum as it hit everything on our list…naturally beautiful, Spanish style, outdoor, romantic and of course plenty of room to party. Our style is very relaxed and fun and we wanted to create the party of our lives, as we love to party like true kids that went to college at UCSB and lived in Isla Vista. We wanted to treat our guest to amazing live entertainment, delicious cocktails and tons of dancing. We wanted to incorporate tiles from my Mexico town for the menus and also used them as place cards. The guests got to take these home as coaster to remember that amazing day. My father spent countless hours perfecting these tiles which my favorite touch to our wedding decor. I have to give all get credit to Andrew for picking the most amazing band. They are local kids to Santa Barbara and have such an amazing energy that Andrew and I feel in love with. The reception felt like a concert as guest were chanting from the front row for an encore “one more song, one more song”!!!

The day off we have a few hiccups but my matron of honor did an amazing job of not making me aware there was a mud slide that day that closed the freeway…..so many guest were late or did not make it.

We enlisted our friend Hank to marry us, he got ordained! We felt it was important to have someone up there that knew our love so well and it was very special. We wrote our own vows and both procrastinated until the day of, but that made it all the more special as we were in the moment. We were nervous but of course this was my favorite part of the wedding, our vows spoke so true to our personalities…me wild…and him the mellow well spoken one.

I wore a Jenny Lee strapless dress. My mother in law is the most amazing seamstress! She saved the day and was sewing me into this the day of the wedding! I absolutely felt like the most beautiful bride. I felt this dress captured the Spanish theme and my simple style. I had the privilege of wearing my mothers necklace from her wedding and my mother In law pearls. The bridesmaids picked their own dresses because I wanted them to each feel beautiful and dress to their style. We actually didn’t see them together until we got dressed for the wedding. They turned out amazing together and I’m in love with the different styles together. Andrew and his boys looked like GQ models with their blue suits…he wasn’t sure about the vest but I absolutely loved that look.

Without our families none of this would have been possible. We have the most amazing parents! My amazing mom was my rock throughout this experience. She saw all stages of a bride panning a wedding and helped me facilitate the beauty of this day ever step of the way. We like to think of ourselves as wedding planners now but we will stick to our days jobs…it was tough!!!!

It’s true what they say, it’s was the most amazing day of our lives!
