You Won’t Believe This Boudoir Session Didn’t Take Place in Italy

You don’t need a passport to achieve the romance of Tuscany in your bridal boudoir session – this inspiration shoot was actually captured in San Francisco! Yourdreamphoto kept the images simple and the color palette neutral, juxtaposing the beauty of the Bride-to-be against the timeless architecture of the unexpected location – the Legion of Honor – and capturing that effortlessly romantic Italian vibe. This beautiful shoot proves that by thinking outside the box for your pre-wedding boudoir session location, you too can recreate that European elegance.

From YourdreamphotoThe session was inspired by the aesthetic of old Tuscany – its unique architecture, shapes, and timeless vibe. The goal was to convey the spirit of Italy through classic and simple imagery while accenting the beauty of our gorgeous model. the main color palette was red, white, and a bit of green. A veil from Jin Wang, a uniquely shaped topaz ring from Anthropologie, and a golden tiara from BHLDN made the look of this styled bridal boudoir session complete.

Historic Estate Wedding With Secret Garden Style

If you’ve ever dreamed of a secret garden-style wedding, allow me to introduce this summertime Virginia fête that’s storybook romance brought to life. Captured by Jodi & Kurt Photography, it’s the love story of Hannah and Dyer who tied the knot on the bride’s family estate that’s steeped in history and beauty. We invite you to get lost in the pretty and head over to the gallery for a full glimpse into this truly timeless day.

From Jodi & Kurt PhotographyLong-time residents of the picturesque Middleburg, Virginia community, Hannah and Dyer wanted their home-based nuptials to capture the elegance and grandeur of the Reuter family’s historic estate.

Established as Glenstone in the early 1920s, the rolling pastures of this quintessential hunt country property have been the foundation of the Reuter family since the late 1790s. At the very heart of the farm’s 1200 acres stands an incredible 250-foot tulip poplar tree that is believed to be over 300 years old. It was under this magnificent tree so deeply rooted in both the Reuter’s land and their hearts that Hannah and Dyer exchanged vows.

Prior to the ceremony, guests were greeted with Champagne in Glenstone’s formal Boxwood Garden; the first of several unique outdoor spaces used throughout Hannah and Dyer’s celebration. Following an intimate first look in the estate’s Secret Garden, the couple joined their 300 guests beneath the imposing poplar.

Immediately following their joyous ceremony, guests made their way to the Eastern Garden, which was built to celebrate Hannah’s grandparent’s 65th wedding anniversary. Over cocktails and conversation, guests feasted on seasonal hors d’oeuvres prepared by Middleburg’s famed Red Fox Inn, which has been owned and operated by the Reuter family for three generations.

Dinner and dancing ensued under a lantern-lit tent on the South Lawn, featuring an abundance of flora from the estate’s grounds.

From the photographer… The olive branch, a symbol of peace and victory, was the theme woven throughout this beautiful destination wedding in Tuscany, Italy. The olive branch makes an appearance on the bride’s gorgeous Calla Blanche gown, the floral details and even the wedding invitation. The significance goes beyond pretty and touches on a deeply personal note for the bride and groom as they face the groom’s diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Take a look at the collection of images to get a glimpse of this touching celebration of love including their two children and closest family and friends.

From the Bride… In the year 2000 when I was 16 years old I was asked by a friend to come to a hockey game to meet a cute boy that she had a crush on. That cute boy turned out to be my now husband Cam. We dated all throughout our senior year until graduation. After grad Cam planned on pursuing a career in Alberta which was a whole province away and leaving my friends and family for a very very cold place was something I wasn’t ready for so I stayed behind. We went our separate ways but always knew we’d end up back together somehow. In the summer of 2007 we met up again at a country music festival and danced all night together while Reba McEntire sang up on stage. Cam still lived in Alberta and I was still in BC but we were determined to make it work this time. Cam often travelled 16 hours straight to come see me on his days off, and I flew to Alberta every chance I had so we could be together. We bought our first home in 2008 and welcomed our children, a boy and a girl, in 2009 and 2010. On Thanksgiving of 2009 Cam was given the unfortunate diagnosis of having Multiple Sclerosis. His symptoms were pretty mild until the summer of 2016 when he had a very significant attack. It was then that we decided it was time to have the destination wedding we’ve always wanted in Italy before it was no longer possible due to his disease. On May 16, 2017 we exchanged vows in Tuscany surrounded by our children and closest friends and family and it couldn’t have been more perfect. It may have taken 17 years for us to finally tie the knot but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

Bachelorette Desiree Hartsock Explains How to Deal with Dress Regret

You said yes to the dress, had your measurements taken, put down your deposit…and, as you were walking out of the boutique, you suddenly wish you hadn’t. If this is you, don’t panic! I’ve worked with many brides who second guessed their choice and I understand how stressful it is. Purchasing your wedding gown is such a big, emotional decision and it can often come with some big, emotional reactions. However, once you start working to rectify the situation, you’ll feel better.

Here’s your way forward from dress regret to dress bliss!

Lindsay Madden Photography

Revisit Your Gown

First of all, call your boutique and ask them about your options. Since the majority of wedding gowns are made-to-order, your contract might stipulate that there are no exchanges or refunds. However, if you call right away, your boutique might allow you to select a different dress. If your boutique cannot offer an exchange, stay calm—schedule a time to revisit your gown when the store is quiet (weekday mornings often work well for this). Try it on again and see how you feel in it. Recall what you loved about it and why. With a clear mind and some quiet time with the dress, you might fall for it all over again!

Ask About Styling

Styling can be transformative! Are you thinking that the skirt of your wedding gown is too full? An alterations specialist may be able to remove layers of crinoline from the inside, slimming out the silhouette. Feel like you missed the chance to wear a puffy gown? Inquire about detachable tulle skirts that you can wear over your sheath or even mermaid dress. Is the gown sweet while you are a little more rock ’n roll? Go for a gunmetal belt or fringe necklace. With the right tweaks, you may just love your gown even more than the first time.

Retrospect Images

Moving On

If you simply cannot live with your dress, you might want to begin your search again. It’s a good idea to look at new options in the same salon so you can compare them side-by-side with your first gown. Think hard about what you want in a new style and ask for an experienced stylist to help you hone your selections. As for your first wedding gown, you can try to resell it on a ‘previously loved’ wedding dress sale site or even donate it so a less-fortunate bride can have a gorgeous gown.

Tamara Gruner Photography

At the end of the day, don’t feel bad about picking the wrong dress or having to purchase another one. So many brides become “two dress” brides and that’s totally okay. The journey to your wedding day is full of surprises and you learn so much about yourself. Remember that the important thing is that you’re mrrying the man of your dreams—no matter what you’re wearing!

xoxo, Desiree

The Bride Wore a Pretty Floral Comb in Lieu of a Bouquet

Nothing — and I mean nothing — about Laura and Brian’s wedding was cookie cutter basic. Instead, they wanted their big day to be bright, happy and full of garden party whimsy. They reinvented the formalities to fit their personal style (hello, statement floral comb!) and treated their guests to a celebration that felt authentically them. Go see the fun for yourself via the incredible captures by Lynette Boyle.

From Lynette Boyle… Laura and Brian are a great example of how when it comes to your wedding, you can and should make your own rules. If you want to follow some of the traditions, that’s cool… And if you want to kick some of them to the curb, that’s cool too. When we first sat down to chat about their wedding plans and what things were most important to them, I could tell how important it was for them to enjoy the day and be present. They didn’t want to deal with not seeing each other the morning of their wedding, formal dances, or a full wedding party. Laura chose to not carry a bouquet and opted for a floral comb instead and Brian chose to skip a boutonnière altogether (though he did insist on wearing a tux).

Madrona Manor is such a beautiful space, from the Victorian mansion to the expansive gardens, the couple wanted Madrona and its gardens to be the inspiration. When Laura sat down with Natalie of Mack Floral Design, she told her that she wanted color…no specific color in particular just lots of beautiful color. Natalie brought in seasonal flowers like peonies, ranunculus, tulips, and roses in an array of pink, red, orange, and yellow – all the colors you would expect to see during peak spring in California. Brian built their beautiful ceremony arch which Natalie adorned with lush florals and greenery.

Macarons served as escort cards, and why have one cake when you can have seven specialty cakes and more macarons?! Laura’s sister served (informally) as the matron of honor, and during her speech, read a hilarious poem she wrote in her youth about Laura. Of all the little details though, I think my favorite was the father of the bride’s tie. It had a repeated photo of Laura as a little girl, dressed up like Wonder Woman.

I truly loved how these two did the things they wanted and didn’t worry about the formalities that didn’t matter to them. They were so happy to just be with their families and closest friends to eat, laugh, and celebrate.

Classic Summer Wedding on Martha’s Vineyard

Planning a wedding on Martha’s Vineyard is no easy fete. Speaking from experience during my own venue search—things book up quickly! That is, unless you’re parents have a home on the island like this stunning Bride, done up by Stacie Ford Weddings. Their classic church ceremony followed by a tented reception is pulling at my seaside-loving heartstrings. Craving a coastal affair packed with elegance? Spend some time with this fete planned by Lyndsey Hamilton Events and captured by K Robinson Photography.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/215126064 600 338]

From the Bride… Matt and I grew up in the same small town just north of the Manhattan. We unofficially met when we worked down the street from each other, he at his family’s pizzeria, me at the town bakery. He’d come in on Saturday for glazed donuts. We officially met in high school when he starting hanging around with my group of friends- and we became lab partners in physics and we’ve been partners ever since.

It took 10 years for matt to propose and a second for me to say yes! In July of 2015 we got engaged on Edgartown harbor in Martha’s Vineyard and decided there was no better place for us to say I do! We were married in St Elizabeth’s in downtown Edgartown by Matt’s cousin Michael White, who also married Matt’s parents 31 years earlier.

The reception was held at my parents property on the Edgartown great pond. Lyndsey Hamilton Events planned and designed a fairytale wedding. We started with cocktails, passed hors dourves, and a raw bar, in my backyard over looking the Edgartown great pond. During cocktail hour and dinner we enjoyed the beautiful musical styles of the lovely Parkington sisters- including an hour of old Irish songs as a nod to our heritage.

Matt, a chef in downtown manhattan, worked with Jaime Hamlin catering to curate a delicious menu; to start a plate of local cheeses and honey, then the main event of a whole roast pig, roast chickens, and grilled sword fish- complemented with a side of fresh succotash, and the biggest culinary hit of the whole night; cornbread. We made our way from the Sperry dinner tent to the clear top tent with a clear dance floor covering the pool. We used big sky tents for all our rentals. After all the important dances and the iconic moment, of my best friend jumping on stage to sing with the wedding band Sultans of Swing with Jerry Bennett, we cut our delicious carrot wedding cake made by Cakes by Val. The cops shut us down at 1045pm but that didn’t stop us from we heading over to the barn for my favorite part of the whole evening; the late night food truck from The Artcliff diner. We danced all night under the stars and ended the day sitting cuddled by the fire pit.

One of the Prettiest Spots to Say I Do in Florida

After perusing this collection of wedding imagery from Joseph Rogero, pews and palms might just be my new favorite combo. Doesn’t this scene just make you want to jump through the screen? I wouldn’t mind being a guest in this serene space watching two love birds pledge their vows. Thankfully, we can all be virtual guests in the full gallery!

From Joseph RogeroJason and Emily set out to plan a beautiful outdoor wedding on Amelia Island. The two claim love at first sight. Jason was invited to eat New Years dinner at a local supper club in Atalanta and Emily just so happened to be working that night. The rest is history. Personal touches and attention to detail are things these two know about. Jason is a personal/private Chef (Dine with Jason) and Emily founded her own energy company (Emrgy). These two love the warm costal beauty of the Island and hosted an organic gathering along costal inlet of the incredibly charming delta. Guests had a sense of sanctuary as they were greeted with pews outside under the ancient oaks of Amelia, then enjoyed the setting sun while partaking in low country traditions such as old fashions and oysters during cocktail hour along Walkers Landing veranda. With the grooms background in culinary arts, guest enjoyed not so traditional wedding plates that were nothing short of amazing. Courses included soft egg and asparagus salad with goat cheese, smoked morels with aji pepper vinaigrette. Stuffed Chicken roulade with carrot puree, fava beans and peas, carbonated blueberries. Pan seared cobia with ramp chimichurri, local sea beans, shrimp chip, Congaree and Penn broken rice with mushrooms. Of course all food had wine pairings with each course as well. The always delightful Atlanta Showstoppers and their 12 piece band played the night away.

Romantic

From the bride, Antonella… There are moments that you dream for a lifetime, which you’d like to be perfect, to hold in your heart. Thinking about my wedding I realize that my wishes came true! I shall never forget the emotion of walking down the aisle, the look on my husband’s face, the deep scent of the spring flowers, the happiness in everybody’s eyes and hearts… Florence and the surrounding hills have been the ideal frame for our wedding, a place so magical and elegant like no one else. We fell in love at the first sight with the villa, its garden end its little church. Pictures speak better than words, for us it was like living in a fairy tale.

Friends have always told me that they lived their wedding day with a bit of anxiety and apprehension, and I can’t deny I’ve felt the same feelings as I approach the event. However, I can say that all concerns about dress, shoes, weather, have disappeared already since my arrival in the villa. Probably because Tuscany has always represented for me and Sossio the place of tranquility, relaxation, the oasis in which to take refuge from the stressing life of the city. Or probably because the beauty of the place makes you forget about everything that is not important and helps you abandon yourself to your feelings.

About “the day”, I’m already nostalgic for the awakening in my fantastic suite, for the preparation, for the excitement to know I was going to marry the man I love. Some people say they don’t remember everything of their wedding day, or they didn’t enjoy it at all because of the tough work to make the event go fine. I can say that every single detail will remain intact in my mind, and if I could I’d marry again in the same place, with the same atmosphere. Even just to relive that moment at the sunset, looking down on Florence, when we both understood that day was the most important day of our life.

But you know, it’s not a special wedding without special people! And I don’t just mean our families and friends. I’m talking about our wedding planner, Maria, who was superlative in arranging everything. I never imagined to find someone so able to understand my needs and to put into practice what I had in my mind. I’m talking about Elias who made us feel free and never embarrassed, making a spectacular photo shoot. What else can I say? Florence, the birthplace of Renaissance, this time has been the birthplace of our love and dreams. And if you consider the work of Maria and Elias, from Greece, the cradle of European civilization… Could it be more perfect?

Putting the “Health” in a Healthy Marriage

In traditional wedding vows, couples are asked to take each other “in sickness and in health.” Even if your ceremony doesn’t include those words, getting married binds you to the physical and mental well-being of your spouse. With that in mind, now is the time to learn more about each other’s health and discover ways to maximize the quality of your life together.

Jeremiah and Rachel Photography

Health Knowledge is Power

The best way to start is by gathering and discussing your personal medical history, as well as the history of your parents, siblings and extended family. Ask relatives about their health conditions and at what age they were diagnosed. You and your spouse should be well aware of possible future illnesses and what conditions you may pass down if you choose to have children.

Once each of you has compiled your medical history, see a doctor. Though you may like diagnosing yourself using medical websites (who doesn’t?), it’s no substitute for establishing a relationship with a reputable physician you trust. Ask your doctor about recommended screenings and lifestyle changes, and make sure to share the results of your appointment with your partner.

A critical part of health knowledge is having the ability to respond in emergency situations. For instance, you may know your partner is allergic to peanuts, but do you know how to give them a potentially life-saving injection? If your partner was rushed to the hospital, could you tell the doctors what medications he or she takes? I recommend putting that info in your phone so you always have it with you.

Diana M. Lott Photography

Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Although emergencies can occur, your health is more likely to be impacted by daily diet and exercise habits. According to doctors at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic, poor lifestyle choices contribute to diseases such as obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Spouses should support each other in making improvements where possible. Keep healthy foods in your home and experiment with new recipes that use nutrient-rich ingredients. You might exercise independently based on schedules and preferences, but try to find physical activities you can share (in addition to that one) so you can be active as well as spend time together.

Jordan Brittley

The Importance of Mental Health

As you work to improve your physical health, make sure to check in with each other about mental health issues. Conditions such as anxiety and depression can have a detrimental impact on health and on relationship satisfaction. Unfortunately, many people try to hide or downplay their symptoms. If you have concerns about your own or your partner’s mental health, discuss the subject and be proactive about seeking professional help.

Finally, if you are truly committed to having the best health possible, work on having the best marriage possible. Stressful marriages have been found to negatively impact blood pressure, heart disease and even the number of colds you catch. So instead of fighting with each other, fight for a marriage with intimacy and connection to give yourselves the best chance for a long and healthy life together.

From the Bride… Working within the wedding industry, I knew right away what I had envisioned for our Big Day. I wanted to try to stay clear of the old traditional wedding routine and do things in a way that felt more like a big celebration. We had all of our guests and bridesmaids wear shades of white and we had our best friend marry us which was by far our favorite memory of the day. I wanted to create a lot of the elements throughout our wedding day by hand such as the wooden menus, blue hand dyed dinner napkins, and the custom ceremony wand stamp. We had so much fun planning each and every detail together leading up to our wedding, which made our day even more enjoyable. We had an all star cast of vendors who made our wedding possible, each and every one of them helped bring our modern-boho theme to life!!

This Is the Ultimate Beach Wedding Inspiration

A little bit dreamy and a whole lot beautiful, this destination wedding inspiration session Crosby + Jon Design at the Banyan Tree Mayakoba is the ultimate in beach weddings. The lavender, aubergine, and mauve color palette effortlessly complemented the natural surroundings, and Tec Petaja worked his magic to capture the whole thing brilliantly.

From Crosby + Jon DesignWhen we first visited Banyan Tree Mayakoba, it felt like a dream. So a year later, when we were given the opportunity to create this special shoot for the property, it truly felt like a dream come true. Our attraction to Banyan Tree is how the property balances nature with luxury in the most effortless way; it is the ideal place for a destination wedding.

Inspired by the property’s zen-like quality, we embarked on the design journey by focusing on the natural setting of the Riviera Maya. The color palette was derived from the soft white sands, pastel skies, and lush mangroves. We knew it was essential to collaborate with a photographer that would understand the aesthetic, and the obvious choice was Tec Petaja. With his limitless talents, he brought his worldly and artistic approach, and each photo seems to capture a dream-state. Tec Pataja seemed to command the sea and sky, blending the colors that can only be created by nature, and light so rare that it somehow seems exclusive to Banyan Tree Mayakoba. Indeed, our destination wedding dreams were realized.

As our Bride, Felicitas Oyhenart, made her way to the ceremony in a traditional Ixchel boat, she wore a taupe tulle gown from Tara Latour, the perfect mix of femininity and texture as she drifted through the romantic waterways to meet her Groom, Joel Cecottimade. Undone sand paths led her to the beach ceremony, where the sky was awash in lavender. For the ceremony, we wove white tulle on a simple teak canopy, with unconventional mixed tufted seating from Archive Mexico. Moni Junco brought her floral prowess to the day, providing a bridal bouquet as lovely as the Riviera Maya dawn with a mix of lavender, blush, and mauve. She added flowing arrangements to mirror each side of the aisle entrance.

For the reception, overhead café lights created a frame for dinner on the sand. We placed a handful of round weathered wood tables on the beach and added a mix of cane-back and bistro chairs. The tabletop, all from Archive Mexico, included vintage goblets of silver and grey, glazed stoneware, and modern rose-gold flatware. Centerpieces of aubergine florals were flowing from etched copper bowls and dainty lavender bottles. A found piece of lavender fan coral started as table decor but became our favorite alternative to the Bride’s bouquet.

Stick with a stone you love, like our fave, the Nexus Diamond. It’s a diamond alternative that is super beautiful, plus we’re sort of obsessed with the gorgeous designs you can wear it in. And since they cost a lot less than mined diamonds, you can go bigger with your engagement ring or jewelry. (We love that.)

TWO: FIND PIECES YOU’LL BE PROUD TO WEAR

Saying “yes” to conflict-free jewelry is never a bad idea, and if your heart soars at the thought of wearing a patented diamond alternative, we say go for it. Not only will you be supporting a cause that is near and dear to your heart on your Big Day, you can proudly show off that bling for decades to come. Worried about losing the sparkle and shine that a diamond offers? Don’t be. Our friends at Diamond Nexus have you completely covered with a stone that acts and wears just like a diamond does, and even grades the same as a flawless diamond from AIG.

Shown Above: 1. Summer Breeze Bracelet 2. Cool Nights Pendant

THREE: CHOOSE JEWELRY THAT WILL STAND THE TEST OF TIME

Choosing a style that is timeless is one thing, choosing jewels that will actually last is another. Because if you truly want to wear those fab earrings at your annual New Year’s Eve bash, stay away from stones that will chip, discolor or scratch. We love Nexus Stones, because they are guaranteed not to… and they’ll even replace them if they do. Yep, investing in pieces that are high-quality and crafted by hand is key, especially if you can have them replaced if something happens to them.

Promotion

Our advice? Don’t reserve your fine jewelry for special occasions… rock that bling any chance you get. And most def start your search with Diamond Nexus’ beautiful line of jewelry and engagement rings for gorgeous diamond alternatives and high-quality jewelry you can actually afford. Curate a Thoughtful + Practical Wedding Welcome Bag

Your out-of-town guests have literally gone the extra mile to attend your wedding. They’ve doled out extra funds for travel – and probably budgeted a little more for accommodations. All because they love you that much.

Here’s how to put together a bag that says “Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here!”

Jose Villa Photography

Pick a Bag
…or a box, or a basket. Whatever you choose will the base for your gift – and a valuable first impression for your guests. A simple canvas bag is always a great option. It’s a cute carryall for your items, and, the best part, your guests will be able to reuse it when they get home! Customize the bag with a fun slogan or a design with the wedding location. If your location is a beach or a winery, you could get creative with a pail or a small wooden crate.

Write a Note and Itinerary
Tell guests how grateful you are for their love and support on your wedding weekend with a personal letter. (Bonus points for handwritten cards.) Play tour guide! Recommend cute local coffee shops, your favorite lunch spots, and popular tourist attractions. Be a gracious host for guests who left their invitation at home (or aren’t up-to-speed with your wedding website) by including an itinerary for the weekend. Remind them where they need to be and when they need to be there. Ask an artist friend or a graphic designer to whip up a pretty design in your wedding colors for a pop of art in your bag.

Melissa Jill Photography

Shop Local
Give out-of-town guests a taste of the area with snacks from local vendors. Mix sweet and savory options – like potato chips at a Cape Cod wedding or peaches in Georgia. It’s a fun way to introduce them to the city (and keep them from spending a fortune at the mini bar)!

Offer Drinks
Hospitality usually starts with “Can I get you something to drink?” Whether they’re coming in from a long night celebrating, or a long day sightseeing, your guests will want water in their rooms. Save them from buying overpriced hotel bottles by including some in your bag.

Take your hosting game to another level by providing a location-inspired cocktail in your welcome gift. Think: a mini bottle of Jack Daniels with a Coke for a Tennessee wedding. Are you getting married on or near a vineyard? This is the perfect opportunity to include a bottle of their house wine. Your guests will toast you as they’re getting ready for your wedding or rehearsal dinner.

Add a Personal Detail
Think of something that’s so “you” and so “your fiancé.” It could be a grown-up coloring book you love with colored pencils, your favorite lip balm and plastic sunnies for the beach, or his favorite brand of golf ball and a tee for the country club. These little things will make guests feel more included and connected to you both on a personal level.

Evita, who co-owns Santorini Glam Weddings, shared one of her favorite examples. “The father of one of our brides produces his own olive oil in Greece. We arranged for him to send us a container of olive oil. Then we filled individual bottles with his olive oil and local herbs. Not only did it cost a quarter of the price, but it was also something special of the couple!”

Cure Their Hangover
Plan ahead for party animals! Add travel packets of pain relievers, so friends don’t regret that last glass of wine. This is a good time to remember items your guests might forget (and hotel rooms don’t provide) – like mints, sunscreen, or bug spray for outdoor weddings. The idea of this welcome gift is to help them feel more comfortable while away from home.

Plan Ahead
Odds are you can’t be there to hand out bags in person. But you should plan now for who can. Some hotels will work with you to hand out bags as guests check in or place them in their rooms in advance. Depending on the hotel, this could be complimentary – or cost up to $7 per bag. So it’s a good idea to ask ahead! If the service gets pricey, you might want to assign shifts to family or members of the wedding party.

Elise Hall Photography

A few final tips: Buying items in bulk will help cut gift costs. This will be especially helpful for destination weddings, where most guests will be traveling. Also, keep flights in mind. It’s more popular than ever to pack a carry-on bag for the weekend. So that cute, but bulky, pool float might get left behind if it won’t fit.

No doubt your wedding welcome bag will be amazing! And your guests will be beyond excited to celebrate with you. Remember, no matter where in world you get married, a personal gesture is always welcome.

Combining the Ease of a Beach Affair with the Elegance of the Big City

Don’t be fooled by this wedding’s beach locale. Despite a toes-in-the-sand location, it is all elegance and glamour straight out of a big city affair. And when you hear that the planked floors and sailcloth tented venue were built just for this celebration, it all makes sense. Designed by Cassandra & Company along with lush blooms by Shawna Yamamoto and the prettiest blue and white tabletop decor by Casa de Perrin, this is a Santa Monica beach affair to remember. Pore over all the gorgeous details captured by Jana Williams right here plus a film by New Classic Films below.

From the Photographer… Los Angeles native Laura Crane and born and raised New Yorker Brian Joseph, came together and simply (and almost instantly) became inseparable. They both knew they were in love after traveling to Australia after only two and a half months of dating. A mere six months later Brian, a stock-market wiz, placed his most important bet on Laura and proposed on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Since many guests would be traveling from NYC, the couple wanted the wedding to feel very “California” and a personal reflection of their life. They decided on a beach wedding at a private club in Santa Monica that’s a short distance from their house, and on a beach where they jog and take in the sunset.

Over the months of planning, Laura and her mother Mary, a fabulous interior designer with an unflappable sense of style, combined seamlessly with Laura’s consummate voice of reason and focus on thoughtful details. The tone of the wedding was set with a custom Save the Date, depicting the couple kissing in the bride’s father’s vintage car parked on Pacific Coast Highway. It was all about creating the juxtaposition of the effortless beach soiree and the elegant, big-city bash.

The venue was custom-built for the event with wide-plank hardwood floors laid on the beach, a billowy sunshade raised over the ceremony area, and two sailcloth tents (one for the cocktail hour and one for the reception) installed right on the edge of the Santa Monica boardwalk. The color pallete of ocean blues, aquas and navy came to life with touches of lavender interspersed. Knowing that the family wanted something stunning but tasteful and with a twist, meant splurging on the Casa de Perrin tabletop elements such as the gold Anna Weatherly chargers and mixed metal flatware, hanging a trio of wreaths made of greenery and flowers over the dance floor, and tying a hand-picked white rose to each lavender linen napkin.

Thoughtful details including a lush wreath with an event timeline, periwinkle macaroons tied with a lavender ribbon at each place setting, an array of options for dessert including two well stocked s’mores fire pits put everyone in the mood to celebrate, and finally a late-night treat of macaroni and cheese balls were passed as the band played their final set. As the evening wrapped up each couple was given a jar of chocolate sauce made from scratch by Laura and Mary, a recipe that has been in Mary’s family for over 60 years. Party-goers then moved up to the club penthouse for the after-party, where they snacked on sliders and mini corn dogs on a balcony with a view of the lights of the Santa Monica pier. The morning after the wedding, Brian and Laura opened up their Brentwood home and hosted over 100 of the wedding guests for a casual farewell brunch.

This Couple Survived a Home Renovation During Wedding Planning

I first need to give this couple a round of applause for their impeccably classic style—gorgeous aren’t they? And second, they deserve mad props for planning such a stunning day, with the help of Events by La Fete, WHILE renovating their home. Say what?! I can somewhat relate as my hubs and I purchased a new home the same month of our wedding. But to handle a renovation during the planning process is wild. And apparently their Big Day didn’t suffer at all—just one look at the imagery from Anna Routh and you’ll see what I mean.

From the Bride… Dixon and I met in Raleigh at Campbell Law School in 2011, and were pretty much inseparable ever since. We both practice law in Raleigh and work two floors apart in our office building downtown. We also live in Raleigh. As if wedding planning isn’t enough, Hurricane Matthew threw us a curveball in early October when a tree fell through our new house (we moved in about 11 months prior). This required 4 months of renovation, during which time we lived in an apartment with our new kitten, Jillian. We feel confident that we can survive the challenges of marriage if we can survive an extensive home renovation and wedding planning simultaneously.

I always dreamed of getting married in the Duke Chapel, and it was really a no brainer when it came time to choose our ceremony venue. I come from a long line (four generations) of Dukies. My parents were married in the Duke Chapel, and I was baptized in the Duke Chapel. Dixon has graciously welcomed Duke into his heart and embraced my love for the University, so he didn’t object to the Chapel as our venue (smart man!). Actually getting married in the Chapel was far better than I ever dreamt it could be. The magnitude of the building itself is enough to take your breath away, not to mention the soul shaking organ. Although most brides are probably most excited for the reception, I was most excited for the ceremony. Needless to say, it exceeded all expectations. Another special aspect to our ceremony was the choice of our officiant, Dr. David Burhans of Richmond, Virginia. He married Dixon’s parents at the University of Richmond Chapel in 1981, and has been very dear to Dixon’s family ever since.

The Washington Duke Inn as our reception venue was also a no brainer, and we really never considered anywhere else. My family, friends, and I regularly frequented the WDI while I was a student at Duke, and it has always felt like home to all of us. The feeling was no different seven years post-graduation, and the hospitality and elegance were exactly what we were looking for in a reception venue. The majority of our friends and family were able to stay at the WDI, which was great since convenience and comfort for our guests was a top priority. The Bull Durham Bar was a big hit for March Madness basketball updates and “after-party” drinks. Friday night’s rehearsal dinner and welcome party at The Rickhouse provided the perfect contrast to Saturday night’s formal elegance. We wanted a venue that was very “Durham” and The Rickhouse was just that with reclaimed wood and exposed brick from old tobacco warehouses in Durham. The venue overlooks the original Durham Bulls stadium, which was a nod to both of our families’ love for baseball. Dixon played through high school, the FOB played at Duke, and the FOG played at UVA. The décor included old family baseball photos, decorated baseballs, cracker jacks, Dixon’s old baseball glove, and a fantastic groom’s cake featuring red baseball threads from Edible Art. Our guests got the full effect, as they were able to catch the end of a live game from the patio. It was the perfect way to kick off the weekend.

From the beginning, we knew we wanted our wedding to be a classic, clutter-free, sophisticated black tie affair. We incorporated cherry blossom trees, candles, orchids, and white hydrangeas for a romantic, elegant, and somewhat unexpected twist. The overall goal was to be able to look back at our wedding photos 10-20 years later and not ask “what were we thinking?” To carry out this vision, our save the date and invitation design featured a navy, gold, and ivory palette, classic engraved script, calligraphy, and a gold beveled edge. Playing off of this color palette, we opted for navy tuxes as a modern twist to a classic staple. Bridesmaids wore floor length light gray dresses, which provided a stunning contrast to the navy, as did the flower girls’ ivory dresses and light gray sashes. Although not intentional (truly!), the wedding party attire complimented the color scheme of the Chapel’s stone exterior in the most perfect way. I chose a sophisticated gown by Austin Scarlett with clean lines and no frills. The Monique Lhuillier sash, Vera Wang veil, and lace Manolo Blahnik pumps provided just enough glitz without compromising the gown’s simplistic beauty.

Katie Dunn’s amazing room layout allowed us to creatively fit a lot of people into the ballroom, while also modernizing an otherwise traditional setting. The table layout provided the perfect framework to showcase Kelly Odom’s cherry blossom masterpieces. Another highlight was the escort card table in the gallery outside of the ballroom. Kelly was able to transform an oversized wooden table with white hydrangeas, acrylic risers, and massive glass candleholders. It was a head turning platform that perfectly showcased the classic beauty of navy calligraphy and traditional white escort cards. We modernized a classic five tier ivory wedding cake with an acrylic base, white hydrangeas, and romantic candlelight to bring the whole look together. The first time I talked to Katie, I told her we wanted a formal, but FUN reception/party. With her guidance, we created just that. There was constant energy throughout the night and the band never took a break, playing a variety of genres to please all ages. Their energy was contagious. The dance floor was packed, shoes were off, and drinks were flowing. It was just as we had hoped. We wanted to incorporate family heirlooms as a special touch. I wore my grandmother’s ring on my right hand and pinned a cameo to my bridal bouquet that was used by three generations of women before me.

We will never forget the moment our eyes met as I was walking down the aisle. We purposefully chose not to do a first look to make that moment as powerful as possible – it worked! We experienced a rain shower after the ceremony while finishing up photos. Dixon and I managed to stay dry, as did most of our guests, but it made the tail end of our photography shoot slightly hectic. However, the double rainbow that followed made any weather-related chaos completely worth it! Other favorite memories — Our “sneak peek” of the reception décor before the guests entered the ballroom. It was amazing to see all of our hard work and visions come to life. The ridiculous dance party and amazing band were also absolutely unforgettable. Listening to our loved ones speak so kindly of our relationship and marriage during speeches throughout the weekend was heartwarming.

An Enchanting Wedding at the Island of Gods

Bali is one of my favorite destinations – the pristine sandy shores, the rolling waves in the enticingly blue water, the sunny skies, the green rice fields, and the warm hospitality from everyone I met. So it’s no surprise this enchanting “Island of Gods” was the perfect choice for this Australian couple, who wanted to pay homage to their Indonesian heritage on their wedding day. The gorgeous photos by Axioo speak for themselves, so get scrolling, and if you find yourself packing your bags and booking a ticket to paradise after viewing the full gallery (which also contains their e-session), consider yourself warned.

From AxiooIt’s hard to underpin the secret of a successful wedding. But if one has to choose, it all boils down to one singular factor – the couple themselves. While all credits due must be extended to the vendors or the wedding planner, oftentimes it’s the couple who sets the wheels in motion for the making of an extraordinary wedding. The series of stills you’re just saw is the work of Axioo Bali through the art of film photography. So enjoy that uber romantic and surreal feel, while the groom depicted his own tale of what made his wedding, a superbly successful one.

From the Groom… Bali is an homage to our Indonesian roots despite our well-settled living in Sydney. It holds a special significance to us and the close proximity to our current home also weighed into the decision to have the wedding in Bali greatly. Still, the challenge of preparing a wedding from overseas was immense. It was only through the help of our friends back home and their experience that we managed to pull it off splendidly.

Our strategy was to rely mostly on first hand recommendations and carefully select the vendors who had provided their services to our friends, in one way or another. We trusted that these names were professionals who came highly regarded, and true to form, they delivered and more. The result truly spoke for itself!

The last hurdle of the day was the weather, but Bali is known for having year-round sunny skies. I wasn’t entirely worried about the drizzle that morning, and once it cleared up, it was smooth sailing.

Stephanie and I received the best of service from each vendor, from the venue to our trusted photography service, Axioo Bali. To us, the essence of a Bali wedding is about letting your hair down and having a good time. Thus we prioritized a wedding designed for eating, dancing, and interacting with friends and family. Our communion was a matter of enjoyable and relaxed celebration with our loved ones. And for everything that went so well, we remain eternally grateful to everyone involved, for their time, gifts, and well wishes. It was a wonderful day that was well-worth the hard work, and if given the option, I’d gladly do it the same way all over again.

Our Favorite New Idea: The Getting Ready Brunch

Take two of your favorite pastimes, say: getting ready with the girls and brunch with besties, put them together and voila—you’ve got the sweetest way to prep for your wedding day! Kaitlin of The Every Hostess and Amy Caroline Photography are providing the gorgeous inspiration for us today—from the table set with colorful blooms by Plum Sage Flowers to cutest bit-sized pancakes, a whole lot of pin-able pretty awaits.

From Kaitlin of The Every Hostess… The morning of your wedding day is just as important as the rest of the day. This is the time to wind down a bit, get rid of those wedding jitters and relax with your bridesmaids while you get ready for the big day! As I prepare for my wedding day this summer I have been thinking a lot about how I want these moments to go. I love the idea of a special brunch just for the bride and her bridesmaids to sit down to in their getting ready robes!

Equip with mini brunch bites from Three Tomatoes Catering such as avocado toast, pancakes and a delicious morning cheese board, this brunch is the perfect setting for the morning of your wedding day. For the table setting keep things simple with a soft color pallet of pinks and purples gave the table a girlish feel! I adore these florals by Plum Sage Flowers who perfectly incorporated this color pallet into their design. This brunch is the perfect opportunity to give your bridesmaids a gift for being apart of your special day. I love the idea of a box filled with goodies to spoil your girls from Kismet Crafter. Relaxing bath salts, sandals for dancing later, a water bottle to stay hydrated and a note telling them how much you appreciate them are all perfect items to incorporate.

Focus on being in the moment during this time and enjoy with your best friends! I highly encourage popping a bottle of champagne and a simple mimosa bar!
