5 Ways To Set Meaningful Goals (that you’ll stick to) in the New Year

Raise your hand if you actually stuck to your New Year resolutions in 2017? I didn’t, because I didn’t make resolutions. Instead, I set goals for myself and ones that I knew would be realistic. Sure, the words are sort of interchangeable, but rather than resolving to do alll the things, why not set a few attainable goals? Life coach, Yana German is joining us today with a handful of simple tips on how to do just that.

1. Make sure your goals depend solely on you and no one else. The only person you can rely on is yourself. Don’t let others influence your decisions. We are the happiest then we are satisfied with ourselves, so don’t let other be an excuse for your failure.

2. Set timeframes for achieving your goals. You don’t have to achieve something tomorrow but you definitely need to have a timeframe (i.e. 1-3 months, 3-6 months, 6- 12 months). Keep in mind that the importance of the goal may change and it may need to be adjusted.

3. Rate your goals and remember that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I often see people who get overwhelmed with everything they are trying to change in your life. Take one step at a time. Write down all of your goals and try to rate them easiest to hardest (i.e. easy to achieve, quick to achieve, will require more effort but do-able, will require more time but achievable). This will serve as your map to achieving your goals.

4. When you are writing down your goals make sure there is no distraction and time limit. Try and be in a quiet place where you can think and reflect. After you wrote down your goals give them 48 hours and look over them again to see if they resonate with you. Say your goals out loud and remember that words manifest themselves.

5. Make sure your goals are YOUR goals. Is your grandmother sick and you want her to get better? That’s an honorable wish but you have no control over it. Make sure your goals are attainable. Dreams and wishes and different from goals.

6 Resolutions all 2018 Brides Should Make For a Happy, Healthy Year!

Right before New Year’s Eve, we all set our resolutions for the coming year. But for brides-to-be getting married in the new year, that list of resolutions can be quite daunting. From setting realistic fitness goals to making changes that help your state of mind, here are some great resolutions for the 2018 bride.

SET REALISTIC GOALS
We all want to look our best on our wedding day, but sometimes when we push ourselves too hard, our goals can backfire. Instead, set a realistic goal that you know you can achieve. It will make it less intimidating and easier to accomplish. Michelle E. Fernie-Oley, Founder and Executive Planner of Michelle Elaine Weddings suggests doing “5 push ups every morning before you shower, and then keep building up from there until 10 push ups before a shower becomes your routine.” The same goes for your eating habits. “Read the labels on the foods you’re buying, cook at home more often, bring healthy snacks and lunches to work,” says Michelle. “Don’t deprive yourself, if you want the doughnut, have the doughnut, but “treat yourself” every so often, not every day!”

CREATE A ROUTINE
To help achieve your goals, create a routine in the new year that you know you can stick to. “Sign up for group fitness classes for a month, schedule them into your calendar and stay committed to completing them,” says Michelle. “Replace your happy hours with sweat sessions!” If you don’t have to time to head to the gym, Michelle suggests finding an at-home fitness program that you can do on your own time. “Stop making excuses and start making time for [working out],” she says.

STOP TRYING TO BE PERFECT
“Brides get crazy after the holidays to look perfect and then they end up not looking like themselves,” says Marisa Ronca, Principal Designer & Planner of Marisa Nicole Events. “Don’t go crazy doing all these things to yourself that you don’t normally do.” Instead, focus on yourself and what makes you happy.

LET PEOPLE HELP
Quite possibly the most important think you can do is relax and let others help you. You probably have a to-do list that never seems to end, and some days you can get quite overwhelmed by everything you have to do. Instead of stressing, enlist your loved ones to help cross things off that list. “People want to help with the wedding day, so ask them,” says Marisa.

DON’T COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS
Comparing yourself to others is never a good idea, and in the new year, try to ignore outside pressure. “Don’t get lost in what others are doing or achieving and don’t compare yourself to your friends or others getting married,” says Michelle. “Just focus on what’s the best for you!”

GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK
“Brides are way too hard on themselves and there’s so much pressure surrounding the wedding as well,” says Marisa. “Coming out of the holidays, brides just feel this pressure and they put that pressure on themselves—I think that brides need to give themselves a break.” And we know it may be hard, but limiting the time you spend on Pinterest, or the time you spend looking at other people’s weddings, can go a long way in your overall happiness. “I think because we see so much on Pinterest, brides think they have to do certain things and everything has to be perfect,” says Marisa. “Don’t just do a Pinterest detail because you saw it and think it’s cool, do it because it resembles your relationship and who you are.”

4 Ways to Avoid the Post-Honeymoon Blues

You just got home from your honeymoon and you’re ready to settle in.

But after the planning is done, the celebrations are over, and everything from your wedding season is wrapped up, you’re feeling a little drained and lonely. That’s natural. Here are a few simple ways to overcome the post-honeymoon blues.

Block out “me time”

Transitioning from an unmarried household to a married one has its challenges. There’s no rush when it comes to adjusting to your new life together. Take it easy. Remember, you two are still two different people. Though you’ll always be there for each other, you don’t always need to do everything side-by-side. Take time for yourself in whatever way you need. Bubble baths, exercise, personal projects, whatever it might be. Use that time to clear your head and rejuvenate your body. Your mind and body will thank you later.

Reach out to your bridesmaids

Ride your friendship high long after the reception! Just because the wedding celebrations are over doesn’t mean you don’t need your friends by your side. In fact, now’s the time to keep them closer than ever. They’ll be your support system for life beyond your partner. Keep in touch with lots of one-on-one with phone calls, friend dates, and video calls. Your friendships can keep you grounded while you nestle into your newlywed life.

Display and relive your memories

Don’t let the life of the party die with the party. Take time to go through your photos and videos from the wedding, reception, and honeymoon. Hang up and rewatch your favorites so those moments can live on. They’ll reignite the same joy you felt when they were taken. Show off the photos you love the most. Seeing them throughout your home or office can help keep those happy memories alive.

Plan your next couple’s trip

Sometimes the honeymoon can hold a lot of pressure. If things don’t go as expected (and even if they do), your first trip as a married couple can be both exhilarating and exhausting. Your love, your future, and your compatibility aren’t wrapped up in the honeymoon. If you want to keep creating intimate memories, sit down together and plan another trip. Anything from a weekend road trip to an overseas excursion can get you focused on the future and thinking about your next season of adventure together.

However you celebrate your honeymoon, find time to unwind when you arrive home. Take time for yourself and stay in touch with your besties. Most of all, find a way to celebrate the amazing wedding season you just went through because before you know it, you’ll whisk each other away on more amazing adventures.

A Glamorous Black Tie Wedding That Starts With a Sea of Candles

The marble alter at Vibiana is seriously the stuff that dreams are made of. It’s pure magic and we haven’t even gotten to the sea of candles tucked inside this black tie celebration. It’s bringing glamour and romance to downtown Los Angeles with design by Love & Splendor, florals by Kelly Oshiro and the prettiest of imagery by Erich McVey. From the Bride… When planning our wedding, David and I wanted to create a special night for every person in attendance. We had never been part of a black tie event before, so we chose that as our theme: we wanted to host a celebration where we could all get dressed to the nines and enjoy a formal, luxurious night in the city. Thankfully, The Vibiana in Downtown LA was the perfect venue for what we had in mind! As a cathedral in a former life, the grandness of the main hall was a perfect fit for both our traditional wedding ceremony and upscale reception. We are still in awe of how Angel of Love and Splendor and Kelly Oshiro used hundreds of candles to create a romantic and reverent altar that also served as a backdrop throughout the reception. Since David and I love to eat, another must-have for our wedding was amazing hors d’euvres and food. Vibiana’s Chef Neal Fraser and his excellent staff served a delicious meal in a manner that fit the evening’s elegant mood. (If only we had more time to eat our food, but hopefully our guests enjoyed them!). During the cocktail hour outside, our friends and family took turns taking pictures on a red carpet with a backdrop featuring gorgeous laser-cut wooden calligraphy. After the cake cutting, David and I performed a surprise dance routine choreographed by one of my close friends. After the two of us danced to MKTO’s “Classic”, we invited our parents up for a choreographed “Father-Daughter, Mother-Son” dance set to “This is Home” by Switchfoot. If you knew us and how we NEVER dance (even at weddings!), you’d understand how shocked our friends were. All in all, our wedding exceeded our highest expectations and was the perfect way to start our married life together. We are so thankful to Angel and our amazing dream team of vendors for bringing the weekend to life. We are also so grateful to Erich and Amy McVey for capturing photographic evidence that it wasn’t just a dream, and that it actually happened!

If cuddling up by the fireplace of a private log cabin or skiing the slopes of the Swiss Alps sounds more appealing than sweating in the Caribbean sun, this list is for you! These wintery honeymoon locations are the perfect balance of romantic, luxurious, and cozy for you and your snow-loving beau.

Zermatt, Switzerland
If you’re seeking a honeymoon filled with outdoor adventures, look no further than the ski-resort town of Zermatt nestled in the Swiss Alps at the bottom of the famous Matterhorn. Beyond hiking up the colossal peak, ice skating, skiing, and curling are among the more moderate winter activities available. With its misty weather, the city becomes increasingly romantic—the perfect place to explore as newlyweds. Take a ride on a gondola, visit Saint Mark’s Basilica, and eat lots and lots of Italian food because your wedding diet is over! For an intimate dinner approved by locals, check out CoVino. From Creative Films… Wow – what a way bring in a new year with this beautiful couple and their family and friends. I don’t want their amazing story to get lost in the glamour and stunning details of their day because it is one of the sweetest stories I have heard. They met in junior high and grew up together in the Greek Church. This day was FULL of meaningful moments of family and friends and sharing of history and tradition, from the locket with Marina’s grandparents photos that was brought from Greece to the wonderful dancing that filled the Intercontinental Ballroom all night long! This was the 5th wedding that we have shot for this large family and we are truly honored to be asked back to preserve this day for Marina and Conner.

The bar cart is the shining star of most New Year’s Eve festivities so make it a show-stopper with these easy tips for zhooshing up your drink station courtesy of Doreen Corrigan. With a few festive updates and some sparkling accoutrements, you’ll be poppin bottles in style as you count down to 2018. Cheers to the new year!

Tis’ the season! There’s so much to celebrate and be thankful for during the holidays. Planning on hosting but don’t have the big bucks to hire a bartendar? A bar cart is your best friend. Your guests will feel at home and appreciate making their cocktail just to their liking.

Who doesn’t love a party on wheels? Added bonus, you can set up in any room and easily transition as your party progresses. Not sure where to start? Here are a few helpful hints:

Fill a festive drink dispenser with a signature cocktail for your party goers.

Add in a touch of personalization with monogrammed napkins, fun straws, or unique glasses (pineapples for us).

Add a bowl of snacks or candy. My favorite is classic old fashioned Christmas candy. Love the pops of color, especially from the ribbon candy.

Accessorize the cart with a touch of unexpected. Try fresh florals, balloons filled with confetti, or a whimsical garland.

The Cutest Couple’s Engagement Shoot at the Iconic NYPL

“We don’t really have an earth shattering love story. It was more like an awkward encounter over the internet followed by a string of awkward encounters in person, and then eventually finding out that we liked being awkward together.” I knew immediately after reading their story, I wanted to be best friends with this couple and that their New York Public Library engagement session photographed by Andrew & Ada was about to steal my heart. One look at this gallery, and I was not disappointed.

From Andrew & Ada Fine Art Photography… It was serendipitous that Charlotte would find us and we would be traveling to NYC that summer. Being a photographer herself, Charlotte knew exactly what she wanted! She wanted to have a fine art look: very clean and modern, but incredibly romantic. We joined them amongst the columns and steps at the New York Public Library in Bryant Park and our day with them began.

Charlotte and David are both light-hearted and humble people that find moments to joke and laugh in between every occasion. We found ourselves laughing through the session with them as if we have known each other forever! Yet through all the dad-jokes and puns, they ultimately seek each other to hush and hold; to whisper kind words and share kisses on cheeks.

A New Jersey Wedding (With a Little Southern Flair) at an Historic Inn

From the bride:

Taylor and I met through Tinder and had our first date at a divey commuter bar in Penn Station. It may not have been the most glamorous start (and it was only 20 minutes long because I had to catch a train), but I knew right away that he was special.

Taylor is incredibly thoughtful, and he planned the most amazing proposal. We were just sitting around at home on a Friday night when Taylor casually suggested we go out to dinner in our neighborhood. When we arrived at the end of the subway platform, he got down on one knee and proposed. Moments later, the next subway car rolled up and I was shocked to see that it was filled with our friends and family! Taylor’s friend filmed the whole thing, and there was even a small camera in the ring box itself.

Being a planner, I wanted to visit wedding venues soon after the engagement. We selected the historic Molly Pitcher Inn as our venue because I had always thought of it as a beautiful, elegant place to celebrate a special occasion. Plus, it had a gorgeous promenade right on the river for our ceremony and cocktail hour (despite terrible weather forecasts leading up the wedding, the rain held off and we were able to be outside).

I always knew I wanted gray as one of our colors and Taylor suggested green as our other main wedding color; the gray and green really popped when we added touches of peach and metallic as accents. It also lent itself to lush, natural greenery for our florals. We knew that right away that we wanted round garlands as our table centerpieces, and decided to expand that idea into a large floral wreath that provided a gorgeous background for our ceremony.

Our main inspiration was sharing our love story – we wanted the day to feel personal, and for our guests to come away from the wedding knowing more about us. Some of our favorite personal touches included having close friends announce the reception entrances and special dances, walking down the aisle to a song composed and recorded by Taylor, our locally-sourced olive oil favors, and writing our own vows, which we heard for the first time during the ceremony.

I love to craft, so I made escort cards using white tiles, and created most of the paper elements and signage, including the menus, ceremony programs, table numbers, and more. We also brought some items straight from our home for the decor, such as our light up LA & T initials and the lightboard message sign.

One of the first things anyone learns when they meet Taylor is that he is proud to hail from Alabama; since the wedding was taking place in my hometown, we wanted to honor his Alabama roots by incorporating some Southern elements into the festivities. We kicked things off the night before the wedding with yummy BBQ food at our rehearsal dinner.

My adorable godson Logan was our ring bearer, and he looked like a little Southern gent in his saddle shoes and custom green seersucker suit. Speaking of seersucker, our bourbon-based signature cocktail was called “The Seersucker” and featured green and white striped straws with handcrafted metallic flags. Taylor’s mom baked cheese crisps (one of his favorite Alabama snacks) that each guest received in the welcome box, along with favorite candies from the bride and groom.

While I couldn’t wait to try our funfetti wedding cake, the treat that Taylor was most excited about leading up to the wedding was his groom’s cake, which was a huge chocolate chip cookie cake in the shape of Alabama! The cake featured different landmarks and towns that are meaningful to Taylor.

We kept the Southern theme going right through the end of the night, with “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Livin on a Prayer” (which I like to think of as the unofficial anthem of New Jersey!) closing down the dance floor.

Moving to the dinner reception, the guests were seated amongst wooden dining cabanas with sprawling colorful floral and candles. The velvet textures of linen, rustic wood dining tables, and vintage glassware kept the design eclectic and fun. The energy from the band, a fun Donut dessert display, and a beautiful California summer night, surely did not disappoint.

After attending more than 25 weddings, I assumed I knew everything there was about being a gracious guest during someone’s big day. However, after being invited to two destination weddings abroad, I realized the same rules don’t apply. Before you pack your bags, here’s what the experts say you need to know in order to avoid a faux pas.

Plan Your Own Fun.

While most couples will provide guests with a gathering or two (outside of the wedding), don’t expect the couple to provide all the entertainment and things to do, says Jen Taylor of Taylor’d Events Group. Do your own research and identify a few activities to fill the time. Jen says she usually has the couple offer a few suggests that guests can explore on their own.

If you say you’re going to attend any of the additional activities the couple has planned, be sure to show up. “Remember, the couple is paying for each event,” says Emily Sullivan of Emily Sullivan Events. “By not showing up, you’ve cost them money.” If you’re worried that you may not be up for all of those events, she says simply plan ahead and let them know you can’t make it. “It’s perfectly acceptable to do your own thing.”

Leave The Presents At Home.

If you’re gifting the couple with a physical object, Megan Velez of Destination Weddings Travel Group, is adamant about not bringing it along to the party. She recommends sending it before or after the wedding. “Neither you nor the couple want to lug a gift through customs and security,” she says. Instead, she suggests going the non-traditional route and gifting them with an experience they can use on their honeymoon (like a massage, candlelit dinner or fun excursion).

Pack The Right Wedding Attire.

Look to the wedding website and invitation for cues on the proper dress. “If the wedding is on the beach in Mexico during the day, beach casual is likely to be a safe bet,” says Megan. “An invite with classic black and white script font points to more formal attire.” When in doubt, ask the couple (a few weeks out, not in the week running up to the big day).

Enjoy Yourself but be Respectful.

You can treat the trip like a vacation but don’t go crazy, says Megan. “Just because you’re at a resort and a fun destination, doesn’t mean you can let loose and act like it’s the spring break trip you never had,” she says. “Be conscious of the fact that the trip is about celebrating the couple.” Along those lines, Megan does not recommend inviting friends or kids who aren’t invited to the wedding. “Things can get complicated quickly when traveling with guests who aren’t attending.”

Budget Accordingly.

Expect to pay your whole way through. Before RSVP’ing yes, Keith Phillips of Classic Photographers says “be sure you’re able to afford all costs.” Some couples may choose to cover all or some of the costs for specific guests, but it shouldn’t be assumed.

Pay Attention to the Details.

Destination weddings require more planning for the couple and guests says Tifany Wunschl of Gourmet Invitations. “It is very likely the couple has given you all of the information you need.” Make sure to read through everything. She adds “there is nothing more frustrating to a couple who has spent time listing all of the details for their wedding, to just have their guests ask them what airport they should fly into.” Go through everything very carefully and avoid contacting the couple. If you have questions while on-site, talk to the hotel staff which has most likely been prepped with information and can recommend local attractions.

And last, if you RSVP no and then find a cheap flight right before the wedding, avoid the urge to go. This adds additional stress to the couple.

From the Bride… Vince and I met as neighbors in the summer of 2016, and soon thereafter our friendship blossomed into the “big love” we’d both been looking for. By December, we were a couple, and a short seven weeks later, we were engaged! They say, “When you know, you know,” and I would have to agree! July 1 was the perfect date for our wedding (7-1-1-7 – that should be easy to remember). My (now) husband and I reside in Phoenix, AZ, so when it came to deciding where to have our summer wedding, the decision was easy! There is nothing more nostalgic than Fourth of July weekend in Northern Minnesota at a family cabin on the lake, surrounded by friends, family, and of course s’mores and fireworks!

We wanted our guests to make our wedding into a mini-vacation. Children were encouraged to come along and wedding festivities extended throughout the entire long-weekend. My family has cherished our Lake Wabedo cabin in Longville, MN, for FOUR GENERATIONS! Established in 1928 by my great grandfather, this remote cabin in the woods was the perfect location for our 110-person destination wedding. Guests traveled from 12 states and made the journey 3 hours north of Minneapolis to celebrate our special day. Planning a destination wedding in a city of fewer than 300 people is no easy feat! However, as an event planner by trade, I was up for the challenge, and I couldn’t have done it without our amazing event designer and florist, Kate Kuepers of Bloom Designs in Baxter, MN.

Baxter and John’s wedding was one of those weddings that everyone in the industry desires to be a part of. The bride and grooms’ love story is the classic southern girl marries her handsome marine. Their love for the low country and Carolina Panthers, along with some patriotic touches, made for a fairytale affair. DeBordieu, South Carolina is a second home for the brides’ family, and the small brick church where the ceremony took place is near and dear to their hearts. Baxter remembers sitting in the old boxed pews as a child.

The colors and design of the evening were inspired by the old brick house on the property where the reception tent was built. The team took cues from the almost pink-hued brick, which evolved into the ombre flower wall and fantastic floral installation centered in the tent. The beautiful florals, stylish linens, and soft seating vignettes created a homey atmosphere for guests to enjoy a feast of low country treats and a night of dancing. Baxter and John ended the night with a final personal touch by exiting among American flags and driving away in the bride’s family Rolls Royce.

Turning an Industrial Space Into a Lush Indoor Garden

Even a rainy exit couldn’t dampen this Texas celebration. The industrial backdrop of Brik Venue was turned into a lush indoor garden at the hands of Query Events. It is all out romance filled with candles, florals and a muted color palette. See this gorgeous day unfold (including that memorable and oh so cute exit) through the lens of Stephanie Brazzle.

From the beginning, Rachel’s pureness and joy guided us through the planning process. She was so thrilled to be able to share this moment with her family and friends that we relished in curating each detail. This couple made each decision with intention from the hand written personal vows to the family favorite signature drink. It was important to the bride, with a family full of boys, that the overall design not be too feminine. We created an indoor garden feel with a muted color palette and nothing too pink. Simply adding pops of mustard yellow and deep, almost black burgundy allowed for a sophisticated color story to really complement the industrial features of the venue. From the thoughtful ceremony performed by the Groom’s father to the rainy courtyard exit, each moment was personal and raw. Stephanie Brazzle Photography did a beyond amazing job capturing the feel of the day!

2018 Engagement Ring Trends We Can’t Wait To See

2017 brought us gorgeous rings, with everything from vintage style to classic diamonds decorating the hands of brides-to-be around the world. But, as the year comes to a close, we’re looking forward to the engagement ring trends we’ll be seeing in the new year. James Allen shared with us the trends we can expect in 2018.

ROSE GOLD
This trend first came about last year, and with rose gold dawning the fingers of favorite celebs (hello, Lauren Conrad!), it’s only fitting that the trend is not only sticking but gaining in popularity in 2018. The “pinkish metal has a timeless feel and gives off elegant, vintage vibes,” says James Allen. So it’s perfect for the classic bride that wants a little bit of pizzazz.

HALOS
When you have a diamond surrounded by more diamonds, you have a halo. While this trend has ebbed and flowed throughout the years, James Allen insists that it will be seen everywhere in the new year. “The shine that halos exude is irresistible to any sparkle lover, so there is no doubt that these will make the top trends,” they say. “The only thing better than a diamond is tons more diamonds surrounding it.”

PEAR
Pear-shaped rings are classic. In fact, as a recent bride, I can say that pear-shaped rings were found mostly on my mother’s friends than my own. But in 2018, brides will be taking a nod from past generations and asking for pear-shaped rocks. “Pear-shaped diamonds are here to stay in 2018,” says James Allen. “Social media influencers agree: YouTube star Tanya Barr upgraded her ring to a pear-shaped rock and Instagram star Amrezy recently got hitched with a pear-shaped beauty.”

CUSHION-CUT
It’s been a while since cushion cut has been on the trending list, but in 2018, they will come back in full force. “The cushion cut was popular in old-time Hollywood, and it’s back with a dazzling vengeance,” says James Allen. “Somewhere in between a round and princess, cushion cut diamonds combine classic simplicity and traditional feel.”

EMERALD CUT
If you stay up to date with famous names like the Kardashians or even the royal family, you are probably familiar with emerald cut diamonds. “From Kate Middleton to Kim K, celebs love to don emerald cut engagement rings,” they note. “Oval shaped diamonds trended in recent years, but emerald is now the most adored among the glitz and glam that is Hollywood.”

A Magically Golden NYC Engagement Shoot

Golden hour, a beautiful bouquet, lots of laughter, love and even a celeb sighting; the perfect ingredients for a stylish and successful engagement shoot if we do say so ourselves! With all of these elements in place, we dive into Emily Jane’s shoot right here and fall in love immediately, leaving us feeling inspired and pretty giddy. What more could we ask for!?

From Emily Jane Photography… Just to be around Jackie and Danny is a real treat. They are a team in every sense of the word. They met while in school in Michigan and both moved to NYC to start their careers after graduating.   I met up with Jackie and Danny in NYC at their cute apartment. As we drove around the city they both pointed out spots they loved to spend time together. One of their favorites was Central Park.   We started the shoot in Greenwich Village as golden hour approached. We walked through the charming neighborhood and even stopped to buy fresh flowers.   As we got closer to golden hour we took a cab into Central Park (we even saw Ben Affleck on the way!) The light this evening was just beautiful.   I love when the light hits the top of the buildings from inside Central Park. It’s a really beautiful sight. All of the sudden harsh, hot sun becomes this soft creamy light. It’s the perfect time to walk around to park and that’s what we did.

We’re OHB-SESSED With This Yarn Installation

Inspired by a DIY yarn project she made for a friends’ birthday a few years back, Vanna of Blue Sparrow Events envisioned a wedding day with a bold yarn installation, modern lines, and soft colors. The Prospect House offered the perfect blank backdrop, and The Flower Girl saw Vanna’s vision and brought it to life! Dive right in to this unique inspiration session, captured by Breanna McKendrick and Ian Van Alan.

From Blue Sparrow Events… Back in 2014, I DIY’ed one of the best birthday presents for one of my VERY best friends. The project was ALL over Pinterest at the time, and absolutely nothing new in the world of DIY, but it was new to me. I excitedly made a trip to Home Depot to gather supplies wearing a little floral summer dress. While walking back to the lumber department, I felt apprehensive and out of place in my surroundings. Soon enough, a nice male employee was quick to offer me some assistance. When I explained my small project, he assured me I didn’t need to pay for any wood and showed me the free scraps (that floral dress was paying off!). So I left Home Depot with my free scraps of wood, cut into 6×6” squares, and a box of small rose gold nails. My next stop was Hobby Lobby for thin yarn (you know, the kind we used to make braided friendship bracelets back in the 90s). When I got home, I printed out the state of Texas, taped it to the wood, and traced! I then hammered in the nails along the perimeter and used pink yarn (my bestie’s favorite color) to loop from nail to nail in a criss-cross fashion. I bet you remember this popular little project now.

Fast-forward three years later, and my small-scale, state of Texas yarn project (and birthday gift) inspired my next move for Blue Sparrow Events. When I started brainstorming the vision for this shoot, I knew it was going to be difficult to get others on board. When my sought-after venue, Prospect House, welcomed our modern-romantic vision with open arms, our next hurdle was to find a florist and designer who saw our vision, too! Kari, The Flower Girl, jumped for joy over the idea of doing something different. The built-in grommets at Prospect House worked to perfect the design. I let Kari and her team take it away in terms of pattern, and I gave only a little direction on color. The larger than life yarn-art installation guided the vision for the rest of the shoot. We combined light and bright shades with dark features and pops of faux fur which resulted in a ton of dimension. I love the look of layered rugs and a mixture of textures and fabrics. The faux-fur throw blanket and velvet couch added an elevated touch of luxury, while the cane-back chairs at the dinner table gave the modern shoot a touch of vintage elegance.

Get ready to feast your eyes on real-life Cinderella in her modern, 20th century “castle” paired with sharp lines, pretty pastels, and tons of soft textures. Our bridal model, Madeline, had the most beautiful porcelain skin and blonde hair. The blush colored dress, called Ophelia by Ivy and Aster, complemented her complexion perfectly! To keep trending with our need to be different, I requested the bridesmaids hold something more unique than a bouquet, so you’ll see the geometric gold structures filled with flowers and greenery.
