A Destination Wedding at Alila Villas Uluwatu Rich with Balinese Culture

There’s nothing we love more than when a bride and groom choose to embrace the local culture of their wedding venue – it makes any wedding design all the more beautiful and special, don’t you agree?! This adorable couple tied the knot at Alila Villas Uluwatu with the help of Luxury Weddings Indonesia on a custom floating stage under a towering tropical arbor by Rose & Willow. The entire day is like a dream – see for yourself through these gorgeous images from Axioo Bali!

From Luxury Weddings Indonesia… Whilst hailing from Taiwan, Angela and Henry wanted their guests to be immersed in the local culture of the country they chose for their wedding, embracing the rich cultural heritage of Indonesia.

They reached out to Luxury Weddings Indonesia because of the company reputation with holding beautiful weddings at the stunning Alila Villas Uluwatu located on the southern cliffs of Bali. The decorator for the wedding, Rose and Willow, helped them to incorporate a lot of Indonesian cultural and traditional elements into the event; sourcing local foliage and flowers, lots of bamboo, rattan furniture and hanging lamps, Balinese umbrellas, hand-woven macrame and Tenun Ikat Jepara, – Javanese batik.

For the wedding ceremony we built a floating stage and ceremony area atop the resort’s central swimming pool, the aisle beginning at reception and continuing all the way to the end of the infinity pool on the cliff edge overlooking the ocean. The white aisle was decorated on either side by acrylic pedestals with glass vases of tropical leaves and baby’s breath. This lead to the altar and the palm leaf and monstera leaves wedding arch.

After the ceremony guests gathered for cocktails in the garden surrounded by big Balinese umbrellas with sofas underneath for them to chill and cover themselves from the heat of the setting sun. We included a photo corner with peacock styled rattan chairs so the guests could have the moment captured forever. For dinner we built 250 square meters of white wooden flooring covered by transparent tent on the lawn of Alila.

The tent was decorated with rattan lamps of various sizes, tropical greeneries and lot of fairy lights. We also hung rattan baskets sourced from a local Balinese market and adorned them with more freshly picked greenery. The guests were seated on wooden bentwood chairs of natural colors alongside tables adorned with centerpieces of intricate local rare white flowers and more greenery. As the sun went down all the lights and torches were lit up and created a beautiful ambience, a day and night in Bali to remember. Captured by Andreas Permadi from Axioo Bali Photography.

8 Tips for Your Groom to Survive Wedding Planning

While it’s most common for the bride to handle the bulk of wedding planning, grooms should certainly join the process and contribute to the wedding day. Not only does this make it more fair for the bride, it also ensures the groom is invested in the aesthetic and logistics of the day. Whether your groom is excited or not at all for wedding planning, here are 8 tips for your groom to survive wedding planning.

1. Ask What He Values

At the beginning of the wedding planning process, ask your groom what he cares about and when it comes to the wedding day. His answers will help you determine which tasks he’ll enjoy taking on throughout planning.

Kaella of Kaella Lynn Events says, “As a planner, I always review my clients priorities early on so I can cater the planning to them. It goes the same for you as a couple. Determine what is important to each of you, and take note of what is important to him, that might not be your priority. Those are the things he is excited about so get him involved. Also I always remind myself, that the engagement and wedding planning process should be fun. It’s important to remember that the process is as special as the big day. It’s easy to get stressed and lost in the planning, but try not to lose sight of that. The more you to enjoy this time together the more you will not only survive and have fun!”

2. Set Your Budget Together

Remember that the wedding day belongs to both of you, so each of your values should be represented not only in the wedding plans, but also in the budget. “Have an honest discussion about wedding budget before you begin your planning. There is nothing worse than falling in love with a fabulous vendor or venue, only to realize they are out of your budget.  Coming to an agreement on budget ahead of time will save everyone involved a lot of heartache.” says Kate Siegel of Kate Siegel Fine Events.

3. Know How He Operates

Does your groom get things done on his own without you reminding him? Lucky you! If that’s not the case, understand how your groom works best. Should you make a to-do list so he can enjoy crossing off tasks? Do it if that works! Would he work best with calendar alerts or another method? Try those! Find a solution for your groom that will ensure he accomplishes planning tasks without feeling pressured or frustrated. Everybody has different preferences when it comes to logistical planning, so it’s best to find planning methods that work best for your groom and you!

4. Pace Yourselves

The fabulous planners behind Amorology recommend not pushing your groom into planning around the clock. They suggest to the groom, “Pace yourself! Only feel you need to be involved in the things that are very important to you or of course that your bride to be wants your support in! We have found it is always a fun idea to set aside one night a week for wedding planning with your bride! Go to your favorite restaurant, or cook dinner at home while discussing the details and making decisions in a low-pressure way that doesn’t overtake your engagement!” Combining planning with a fun or casual activity is a surefire way to make it feel manageable for grooms who might not be used to working on wedding tasks as frequently as the bride.

5. Have Him Attend the Tastings

Hands-down, every time I ask my grooms what their favorite part of planning was, they tell me it was the catering, cocktail, and cake tastings. Honestly, that was totally my favorite part too! Make sure your groom is able to attend anything tasting-related not only because it’s delicious and fun, but also because his input will be helpful when selecting final menus.

6. Properly Prepare for Meetings

Whether the meeting is about chairs, flowers, or planning logistics, it’s not uncommon for it to last much longer than you anticipate. Jeannie Savage of Details Details recommends, “I think it’s important for grooms to never enter any meeting on an empty stomach.  Sometimes meetings are longer than an hour and it’s hard to anticipate a definite end time. So it’s also important for the bride to anticipate this too, make sure you are not hungry!”

7. Have Him Interact with Your Planner

When it comes to interacting with vendors, grooms should not be shy about communicating with your wedding planner. Heather Hoesch of LVL Events advises, “Be sure you talk about the parts that matter to you, often times grooms speak up in the final hour when it is too late and that can cause conflict and stress right before the wedding.” Additionally, she encourages grooms by adding, “Don’t be afraid to ask your planner questions directly! So often grooms use the bride as the buffer and that can cause unnecessary stress.”

8. Don’t Neglect Date Night

Remember not to lose yourselves in the planning process. Be sure to spend time together outside of wedding planning. Rachel Welland of Bliss Events adds, “Plan dates so you are sure take some breaks from wedding planning!  Take the time to reconnect, relax, and catch up on other topics besides your wedding.  Outdoor dates (e.g. hiking, picnics, outdoor activities/sports) can help you feel refreshed and clear your heads.  Then you will be ready to tackle wedding planning again.”

3 Ways To Make Your Wedding Planning Process Completely Stress-Free

From April Baytan DesignsWith so many options and endless inspiration, planning and designing your perfect wedding day is a challenging task for many couples. Too often, couples don’t know how to navigate the initial process, they get discouraged and start to reject their own personal taste and style, and fall into planning a wedding not curated to them—leading them to give in and more often than not try to replicate a beautiful wedding they’ve come across instead of creating their own authentic day. So how should one start? Along with stunning imagery from Mariel V Photo and a film from Hitmaker Films, we have some tips below for you today.

First – a quick look at how this gorgeous day came together in this sweet clip put together by Hitmaker Films.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/334097007 600 250]

1. Start with You.

You, your lifestyle, and your relationship are more than enough. Inspiration to create and design a beautiful wedding doesn’t have to go any further. Before you even hire any wedding vendors, the best thing to do is take some good quality time and reflect on yourselves and your relationship. Let your relationship and who you are as a couple be the desired inspiration to help guide you in designing your special day. What things do you enjoy? How would you describe yourselves and style as a couple? What wonderful memories do you have that you want to incorporate into your wedding somehow? Once you gather your thoughts and have a good grasp on the things that make your relationship unique and brings the both of you joy, you can then make the step towards finding a wedding planner or designer that’s right for you.

2. Choose a Planner or Designer that Compliments You

Yes, the actual planning of your perfect wedding can be difficult, especially if you haven’t planned one before. Wedding planners are such a great resource to help you execute your wedding vision, keep expenses within a reasonable budget, and ensure your event runs smoothly. But don’t just pick a planner or designer that you know will do a good job, pick someone who you actually like to be around. Planning a wedding with someone you actually enjoy and naturally click with is a lot less stressful than one who doesn’t understand you and planning a wedding with someone who’s easy to be around is actually a lot of fun! The more you feel like you can be yourself around your planner or designer, the more your planner or designer will get a better sense of who you are and what vendors would be best to partner with.

3. Trust Your Planner or Designer to Help Create Your Vendor Team

Once you have your planner and designer, you’re more than likely going to be shown their preferred vendor list – don’t dismiss these! No, you don’t have to use people off of your planner’s preferred vendor list if you absolutely don’t want to, but there are a lot of advantages to hiring vendors who are familiar with each other. When you select vendors who enjoy working together, you’re hiring a team of professionals who not only want to do a great job for you, but also for one another. Vendors who love working together will go the extra mile to help one another and also want to elevate each other’s work when possible. Not only does this benefit you and create beautiful content for your photographer, but it also helps with easy communication throughout the planning process as well as positive energy and smooth logistics on your actual wedding day.

Here’s an example of how Floral and Event Designer, April Baytan Designs, together with close friend and talented Photographer, Mariel V Photo, put together a beautiful wedding design by simply using a couple’s lifestyle as inspiration.

Our couple loved growing up in the very diverse and eclectic city of San Francisco and wanted their personal style and love for their beloved city to be the inspiration for their wedding design. Their modern yet sophisticated “city by the water” wedding takes place in San Francisco and draws direct inspiration from the city’s environment. A color palette filled with shades of blue and grey reminiscent of the city’s tall concrete and glass buildings, surrounding blue ocean, and often present fog served as the foundation for the rest of the design. Glass-like textures were used such as sleek ghost chairs from The Chiavari Guys and our bride’s earrings and fluid artistic gestures of gorgeous water-stroked details from paper goods by S Libbrecht Studios and cake by Paper Heart Patisserie.

To keep the couple’s modern day style at the very forefront, April Baytan Designs put together garden style floral pieces in a neutral palette of white and cream and paired them with other neutral details, such as a charcoal grey linen from La Tavola Linen, simple and classic tabletop items from Aracely Cafe and the most light and airy silk ribbon from Frou Frou Chic. Last but not least, for a stylish and grand statement, the couple’s modern and uber chic style was showcased with a show stopping blue tulle wedding gown and effortless second white option by Carol Hanna Bridal demonstrating endless amounts of texture and movement which went together perfectly with effortless hair and makeup by CSM Lash.

Industrial Chic Wedding Inspiration at Strongwater Events in Columbus, Ohio

I look at every wedding editorial we share like a mini lesson in wedding planning. After all, the pros are creating a pretty little Big Day blueprint just for you! Today’s blending of styles is the main focus and one you should heed. If you’re scouting venues with an industrial vibe, make sure to give your space a bit of soft contrast like Mari Foster did here; layering in florals from Evergreen Flower Co. and a flowing Willowby Watters dress. Lauren Lee created a collection of images that you can study in depth to pull inspo from for your own celebration—see them all here.

From Lauren Lee PhotoFor this wedding editorial, we had a lot of fun playing off of the natural and organic design aesthetic of the venue. Our minimalistic table-scape added a pop of color to the space as the twists and turns of the centerpiece created flowing movement. To complete the look, we fell in love with velvet table linens and a soft yet playful gown. The flowers and color scheme were inspired by the season. Spring flowers such as lilac and parrot tulips were an essential part of the design. We also incorporated Japanese ranunculus, delphinium, and sweet pea.

Stunning Arabian Wedding Inspiration in Muted Tones at Qasr Al Sultan

The most beautiful bride, blooming floral by Le Marche des Fluers in romantic muted hues and stunning details inspired by the unique heritage of Dubai – these are just a few things you can expect to see from today’s jaw-droppingly gorgeous style shoot from The Purple Chair. Maddy Christina captured the feminine aesthetic of the designs so flawlessly – trust us when we say you’re going to want to spend a little extra time admiring this one, friends!

From The Purple ChairThe Arabian shoot was born as a result of creatives from different regions who met in Dubai to create a location inspired shoot. The venue was the perfect backdrop for this shoot as it highlights the unique heritage of the city. Beautiful coral architecture and brass elements were abundant in the venue.

Pampass, mustard roses, buds, berries and a combination of garden roses were perfectly married in clay vases by Le Marche de Fleur. Muted tones were selected to compliment the mustard and beige accents of the venue. Robin from Feather Paper created a delicate hand crafted invitation suite incorporating the distinctive Arabian bee and Ghaff leaves to tie the suite with the shoot. The special accent in the menu shots were the spices which are a vital part of the day to day culture in the region.

The Purple Chair worked closely with Sara from 800 Tailor to create a modest jumpsuit paired with a cape and a lace hood highlighting the elegance of the bride and embracing her tradition in a romantic and humble manner. The video captured so immaculately by Morning Jacket Films provides viewers with a better look and feel of the feminine aesthetics, embroidery and detailing of this inspirational shoot.

It was a pleasure working with like minded and talented individuals who all came together to create this local inspired shoot and provide the industry with a closer look at the details and unique beauty that stems from this region.

Chic Tulum Mexico Destination Wedding at Mahayana Tulum

I’ve seen enough Mexico destination weddings over the years and I can say with complete confidence that Tulum takes the cake. Sure, that’s a very personal opinion—but I have no doubt that once you see today’s beach fete from Ether & Smith and Destination Weddings Tulum, you’ll be on team Tulum, too. Dig your toes in the sand right here in the full gallery.

From Ether & SmithVivian & Basile, and their closest friends and family, flew all the way from Vancouver to Tulum, Mexico, to celebrate their vows and party under the night sky. The bride had three dresses, a chic lace Pronovias dress, a red dress for the reception, and a effortless bow dress for the first dance. The bridesmaids wore a beautifully draped pink dress perfect for the beach setting. The groom wore a blue suit with a unique floral lining to match the tropical setting.

The ceremony had a statement round flower arch focusing on the beach backdrop, guests entered the ceremony area welcomed by refreshing coconut drinks before they took their seats on wooden pews. Cocktail followed on the beach with the most perfect sunset views and delicious and unique hors d’oeuvres and acai bowls. Upon entering the reception area just steps away under the palm trees, they were welcomed with guest favors.

Long tables were decorated with white and green arrangements with gold accents. Mix-matched chairs gave character and a slightly rustic feel meets the beach life – the perfect Tulum vibe. The night ended with open dancing under the stars, a lot of sand between toes, and an after-party that will always be remembered.

From the Bride… Basile and I were two strangers that met at a coffee shop about five years ago. He had just moved over from Montreal and it was his second day in town. He moved into the building that housed my favorite coffee shop, and we struck up a conversation about travel, music and recommendations on what to do in this city that was now his new home. This fortuitous exchange turned into many planned dates, and a spontaneous first kiss at the inner harbor solidified our strong feelings for each other.

Since then we have reached many milestones together; we purchased our first home, welcomed an Australian Shepherd into our family, and traveled to many destinations around the world. When we traveled to China to visit my family in 2017, he proposed to me in Shanghai. One of my most romantic memories is of a tiny garden just tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the Bund; Basile went down on one knee and I blubbered exclamations of surprise and tears before I remembered to proclaim my answer —a definite and resounding yes!

With our families being split up in Quebec, British Columbia and abroad, it made sense for us to seize the chance to plan a destination wedding. Basile gave me free reign to choose the location but I already knew exactly what I wanted. A few years ago my cousins (who are like sisters to me) traveled to Tulum, Mexico for a girls’ getaway and we had an exhilarating time exploring the cenotes, beach and town. One magical night while we were walking down the beach promenade we heard laughter and live music coming from an enchanting little restaurant that was closed for a private event. People were dancing with delight; their jubilation was infectious and we hovered around the entrance like moths drawn to a flame. We joked that the next one to get married amongst us three would have to get married there.

Cenzontle : Jardin Secreto was that beguiling restaurant, and I eventually ended up having my rehearsal dinner there. When I became engaged and we started to plan for the wedding I suggested Tulum and the rest was history. I reached out to Sofía from Destination Weddings Tulum and she graciously took care of all of my needs; planning the perfect wedding that we had always envisioned for us. They delivered us a precious wedding that was laid-back, chic, lively and full of love.

A Classic Wedding at Silverado Resort in Napa with a Modern Twist

If you don’t already know by now, classic green and white weddings are the key to our hearts here at SMP.  The minute we saw this gorgeous day planned by Whitney Werts & Company, we instantly fell in love with this timeless style all over again! Lucky for us, The Edges Wedding Photography was there to capture every magical moment unfold, including the sweetest hugs between the bride and her adorable flower girls (melting our hearts over here!) Louloudi Design created the most beautiful all-white bouquets that we just can’t get enough of. See it all below!

Check out this must-watch film of Laura & Raj’s special day from NST Pictures!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/285437116 600 338]

From The Edges Wedding PhotographyLaura & Raj’s destination wedding was in Napa last June. Their friends and family traveled from all over the world for 3 days of events: Hindu Ceremony, Welcome Party and the Wedding.

What we really appreciate about this wedding is how classic and timeless all the details were, but with a modern twist!

One of our absolute favorite details are the all white bridesmaid dresses. So chic! The day felt like a fresh take on a garden party with lots of lush florals and blue & navy details.

The reception space was a different take on the typical “ballroom wedding” – the blue pattern of the table linen really brought the room to life. And the pattern also perfectly matched the details in the invitation suite. We loved that Laura changed into a glittery jumpsuit at the end of the night for dancing!

Blush-Inspired Maravilla Gardens Wedding in Camarillo, California

Does anyone else feel like the mauve is the new blush? Give me a big ol’ yes in the comments if so! And I’m not mad about it, at all. This pretty little soiree from Dear Lovers and White Blossom Events is further proving my theory is true. Paired with soft rose, al fresco portraits and blooms galore by City Flower LA, it’s a feminine fete for the books—see it all here.

From the photographer (Dani Toscano)… I recently had the pleasure of capturing Michelle & Daniel’s stunning blush-infused wedding at Maravilla Gardens in Ventura, California. The venue itself is such an amazing setting, with endless amounts of colorful flowers, a pair of doves, a view of vegetable fields, and the perfect golden lighting for a garden wedding. Planned by Amy of White Blossom Events, the space came together beautifully with hints of mauve, blush, deep red, and white tones.

The bride wore two dresses, one for her ceremony and another for her reception. For her ceremony, she wore the Hayley Paige Chantelle gown that was strapless, with a lace bodice and layered with tulle. For her reception, she wore the BHLDN Hearst silver gown. The groom wore a classic blue tux, with a solid mauve-colored tie and white boutonniere.

The botanical nature of this venue was emphasized with the stunning floral pieces crafted by City Flower LA. My favorite touch was the circular floral wedding arch, featuring a variety of roses, hydrangeas, eucalyptus, and dahlias. All throughout the space, guests were met with flowers, lush greenery, and butterflies. What a truly magical day! We are deeply grateful to have been a part of such a lovely and fairy tale inspired wedding.

From the bride (Michelle)… Prior to my big day, my dream wedding inspiration constantly changed from colors to locations to themes. I’ve been inspired by so many ideas so it was fun and challenging to curate my summer wedding. During our planning process, I became really interested in a very simple yet elegant chic vibe with muted warm colors and hints of natural elements.

While sticking to our theme, I was driven by a more feminine color palette which included dusty mauve and soft rose. We searched for bridesmaids dresses and I ended up finding a beautiful shade called sienna pink! It was the perfect hue to use as a base color, with romantic and subtle features. I felt like it could really compliment the ranges of greens and other colors at Maravilla Gardens and be a beautiful transition color from late summer to fall.

I wanted our flowers to compliment our romantic mauve palette and organically blend in with the rest of our details. The floral arrangements were executed so beautifully and matched the aesthetic of our wedding so well! We adored the pretty pastel shades, mixed in with mint-hued dusty miller and blush and red roses. We really felt like our flowers softened up some of the elements of the venue.

I absolutely adored our cake topper and our table sets. It added a personal touch to our wedding decor which I truly appreciated. Our cake topper was custom made to feature our wedding hashtag “aSonginthePark” and was placed against a beautiful vine-infused background.

For our table sets, I really enjoyed creating elements and dabbling in DIY projects with my close friends! For our wedding favors, we ended up painting mini pots and planting each individual succulent with love. It felt really special to include friends in such an important part of my wedding and know they helped me create something beautiful and communal.

We had so many favorite moments! From the planning to walking down the aisle to our first kiss to announcing our official names, it was all so incredibly fun for us. We especially loved celebrating with everyone we care for. It would be too difficult and unfair to single out just one moment! I truly believe our special day was an infinite moment that I will cherish forever.

My wedding planner, Amy from White Blossom did an incredible job in executing my vision and bring it to fruition. From our infinity floral arch to the little details of decor, we loved seeing everything we envisioned come together so naturally. We also enjoyed our bar cart stocked with tequila shots with a wooden sign that read: “Take a shot and take a seat.” The attention to detail and craft showcased our personalities!

Other favorite details from our wedding include all of the beautifully placed frames from our engagement session, the photo booth, and live music with our talented trio band who played all of our favorite oldies! It was truly such a magical night and we’re so grateful for all of our vendors!

You mayyy recognize this beautiful, glowing bride from your TV screens and today we’re lucky enough to share her Big Day with y’all! The adorable couple wanted their wedding day to feel like an intimate dinner party at home (love that), and with the help of the perfect venue, Malibu Rocky Oaks, and the perfect planner, All You Need Is Love Events, it was exactly what they dreamed of. Prepare for your jaw to drop when you see their ceremony set up arranged by JL Designs & Events (not to mention the breathtaking views!) See it all captured by Jillian Rose Photography below!

Tell us a little about you and Mitchell and how you met, fell in love and got engaged!

From the Bride… We’ve known each other since 6th grade, and fell in “love” for the first time in 8th grade. We had every class together and went to the 8th grade formal together! Then we went to different high schools and colleges, so we didn’t speak to each other for almost a decade, when we ran into each other again by pure chance because his friends were a fan of a show that I was acting in (Mitchell had NO idea I was even in this show, or even acting at the time). We stayed in touch after that, and a couple years later we started dating. Fast forward 5 years, we took a trip to Paris which was the first trip we took together when we first started dating and the city where we “made it official”. He proposed in a beautiful hotel room with the most incredible view of the Eiffel Tower, just the two of us, no crowds, no cameras. He even pushed the coffee table aside so he can get down on one knee! It’s a moment we share together that we will never forget.

Tell us about the location and style you chose and why.

We kept explaining to people (and eventually to my planner Shannon Dexter) that I wanted my wedding to feel like an intimate dinner party at home, but really pretty! So from the beginning, We were really determined to find a private home/estate, somewhere we wouldn’t see or run into anyone that wasn’t part of the wedding. So when we came across Malibu Rocky Oaks, We were in pure heaven. The helipad really sold it for me, but we really loved how private it was. You go up that drive way through the gates and you feel like you’re somewhere very far away. And for some reason, even though the house (mansion) is so beautiful and grand, it still felt like a space that we can make very personable and warm. It was the first venue we looked that, and our mind was completely set from the moment we stepped inside. As for style, Mitchell is more of a colors guy, but I LOVE me some neutrals, so being the wonderful guy he is, Mitchell agreed to go with neutrals (and lots of greenery!) for all of our decor and flowers. The views and everything at Rocky Oaks is so spectacular, we just wanted the decor to be something that compliments the views, not something that takes away from it. The biggest challenge for me personally was really putting a specific word for the style I wanted. I just kept blabbing on about how I wanted it to “feel cozy, and warm, and intimate, and very “us”- but still elegant and nice, but not too glitzy!” Luckily, Shannon Dexter is a mind reader and took all that and created the perfect ambience for our wedding.

Tell us about your decor elements, especially anything special that stands out.

One of the most special parts of our wedding was how much of a team effort it was. Especially for the decor, my sister (and maid of honor, AND officiant) did all of the signage– AND she had a baby six weeks before the wedding! But somehow, she managed to make the most beautiful signs, invitations, menus, etc. One of my favorite elements was that we had wood cutouts of the guests’ name on their plate settings. I think that really gave it that personal, dinner party feel I was going for! The welcome sign was also something SO unique and beautiful– we had an acrylic sign, with white writing, and she designed wood cutout leaves to accent it. It’s so hard to describe in words, but it was so cool, and with the added floral arrangements by our insanely talented florist Carissa Jones (JL designs) it was just pure perfection. I’m keeping that sign and putting it somewhere in my house for sure.

What were your favorite special touches from the wedding? Did you include any family heirlooms or special traditions?

I think our favorite “special touch” from our wedding was our ceremony. Our Maid of Honor and Best Man officiated the wedding, which we loved because we wanted someone that was the closest to us to marry us, not some random Judge we found online. My mom walked me down the aisle, which is obviously not traditional but she’s the most important person to me in the world and the person who taught me to love as deeply as I do, so that was also something very special. But I think what was unique about our ceremony was that we had our bridesmaids and groomsmen a part of the ceremony. For the Declaration of Intent (the “I Do” part of the ceremony), we had each of my bridesmaids ask Mitchell a question and vise versa. It was really special to us to have all of the wedding party be a part of the ceremony because they are the ones that are going to be our support system in our marriage. And also our friends thought of some funny questions, which made for good laughs during the ceremony! I loved that our ceremony was what we wanted– not what ceremonies are supposed to be like, or what is tradition.

What is your favorite memory of the day?

Every guest at the wedding will probably say Amy enjoyed the dancing portion of our wedding the most! (our band was awesome). But for us as a couple, I think it was when we finally got to see each other at the ceremony. We didn’t do first look photos, so the ceremony was the first time we got to see each other (after a long day of getting ready!). Also, Mitchell cried when he saw me walk down the aisle, so that was really adorable :). But it really is hard to pick just one memory of the day, the whole day was so magical and fun because we had such an incredible team of vendors who were so talented, but most importantly, a joy to be around.

Minimalistic Bali Destination Wedding at Alila Villas Uluwatu

When you look back at your wedding images, you’ll barely remember the little details you stressed over during the planning process, or those tiny things that went wrong that felt so BIG in the moment. You’ll see images like this, that make you relive the anticipation of getting ready to meet your love or ones like this, where you can almost feel the golden hour sun on your shoulders. Thanks to Axioo Bali, this duo gets to do just that when they look back on their Big Day—and we get to join in, right here.

From the Bride… Finding my wedding mood board was not exactly difficult. I think somewhere along the ways, I have always envisioned a clean minimalistic look that oozes modern and elegant vibes at the same time. I adore soothing colors, fluid lines, and basic touches that spell sophistication at its finest.

I personally think it’s crucial for a bride to know what she wants out of her wedding. It made everything so much easier, so much fun too. By pinpointing your theme, it will effortlessly translate to everything else : the design of your dress and the bridesmaids’, the flower bouquets, the venue, all the details and what you expect from all vendors.

Choosing Bali as a wedding destination was also another easy decision to make. Other than personal reasons, it’s safe to say that it’s one of the most romantic places on earth. Everyone would want to be wedded here, wouldn’t you? This made Axioo Bali as the clear choice too! In a way, it’s like a package deal, the island and photography styling that fit my preference or none at all. And I truly couldn’t be more spoiled or happier.

An Emotional Wedding Day That Reminds Us All What a Wedding Is Truly About

As I opened today’s submission for the first time, I saw the image directly below—captured so beautifully by Phillip Van Nostrand—and I balled my fist up and hit my desk several times with tears rolling down my face. Pure emotion pouring out of me and exactly why this celebration of life and love will go down as one of the most beautiful weddings I’ve ever had the honor of editing. Jacqueline Events & Design tells the story below so graciously. Beyond the dress, the flowers, the details… this, my friends, is truly what weddings are all about.

From Wedding Planner, Jacqueline Events & Design… On October 5, 2018, at 11:00am, Devan Roughton and Haden Shibley became Mr. and Mrs. This is a wedding that will forever define my career. For what you don’t realize is that this wedding was actually scheduled to occur on February 23, 2019. The mother of the bride, Kayla, had lived with ovarian cancer for many years and was very strong when we started this process just one short month earlier. However, on September 27, I answered a call from Devan as she softly explained that her mom had taken a turn for the worse overnight and would be put on hospice at home immediately to live out her remaining days. While sweet Devan thought that her mom wouldn’t be able to enjoy her wedding day, I reassured her that all hope was not lost. I told her that we in fact could allow her to have her mom at her special day and I cast a vision for what became October 5. We had eight short days to pull together the most memorable wedding of my career. Only two vendors had been previously booked, venue and band, and both allowed us out of our contracts and we started from scratch.

When discussing goals and objectives of the client, it is simple – to get married and have the mother of the bride in attendance. To gather the closest friends and family members of the couple in a celebration of love and life. While many of our clients may focus on the more fleeting things of life, this client understood what their special day was really to be about. It truly was the wedding of the year for the Jacqueline Events team.

Devan Roughton was full of pose and grace throughout the entire process. Haden Shibley was the rock she needed and the support system for all decisions made. When discussing where they could get married in eight short days, there was truly only one option – the family home. Her mother was not able to travel and in an effort to accomplish the number one objective, we would have to make the home work. When the decision to move the wedding date abruptly came, I started with a site visit to spend time with my bride. My focus had to be about not compromising what she had dreamt about for her wedding day, while keeping in mind the ticking clock that we were up against. Each day of planning started with a text to Devan asking how her mom was doing. Always afraid that the answer may be that she passed last night. This was my relationship with my bride. It was beyond traditional, it was special and coveted.

Devan’s family owns an art gallery next to their family home and from the minute I walked in the door, I knew it was the perfect location for the 50 person ceremony. It was the history and future of their family. If walls could talk, they would share happy memories that were made of a family working together. We were able to give them another happy memory in the mist of sorrow. While the wedding was planned in eight short days, every detail was thoughtfully orchestrated for the perfect wedding. When working with ministers, we understand that there is a standard script that may be followed. Not this wedding! The minister, Nicholas Costello, wrote a custom ceremony and message just for the bride and groom. It was tailored to the family’s art heritage and how paintings reflect love and life. At the end of the ceremony, the mother of the bride chose to recess down the aisle. It was after this moment that she personally greeted every guest. This was a happy moment and one that was somber. This was the goodbye moment for many friends, it was their final opportunity to speak with Kayla. It literally took every ounce of strength that she could muster up to speak with everyone and take photos with the happy couple. Upon the conclusion of these activities, prior to the reception starting, Kayla left the party and went back to her room where she lived out her remaining days.

After the ceremony the celebration continued with cocktails on the patio and poolside. Brunch was served in the transformed living room. Read below and enjoy all of the special details and learn how the wedding was seamlessly produced.

This wedding will be one that I will always remember. It meant putting aside the perfect wedding timeline, putting aside what we know weddings to be, and giving the couple all that they needed. After living this special day with the couple, I feel as though we will forever be bonded. One week later, Kayla passed with the happy memories of her daughter’s wedding. It was something she talked about up until her passing. That is why we do what we do. That is why we listen, design, and plan the details. It is to make a lasting impression on a family. For this, I am very blessed. This is a wedding unlike any other that will ever occur – it is truly the wedding of the year.

VENUE: When discussing where Devan and Haden would get married in eight short days, we selected a location that was personal and sentimental. We selected their family home. The home consisted of an additional art gallery structure on the side of the property. This would become the ceremony location. The home itself served as the reception location. When designing the wedding, we aimed to compliment the space and not compete with it. The home was built with an Italian villa design and filled with valuable antiques. As you can imagine, the artwork was exquisite. Therefore, the white lush floral desired by the bride was a beautiful landscape for what was already existing. Every inch of the home was used for a different experience. The guests flowed from one space to the next with ease. Guest parking was overseen by a valet service and guests ascended up the stairs to the art gallery. Upon the completion of the ceremony, guests spilled out onto the patio and around the pool. This is where the first dances took place and the cake was cut. After cocktail hour was enjoyed by all, the doors were opened and guests filled what was once a living room. Transformed into an opulent brunch setting, guests remained in this space until a final farewell was given.

Many challenges were faced and overcome within these locations. First is the actual space available. While our sweet bride felt that no one would attend the wedding with this short of notice, everyone said yes. We had 100% attendance resulting in 50 people. However, an obvious space to seat them wasn’t available. We overcame this by looking at rooms in the house not as they were currently setup, but imagined what they could be. We transformed the art gallery into a ceremony through removing furniture and creating an altar out of the fireplace. For the brunch, we looked at the living room in a new light. Removing all living room furniture, we maximized the space with two long family style tables. This also allowed the party to feel intimate and made everyone feel special by being seated together. The second challenge we ran in to was the stairs. This was a twofold issue. First was navigation of load in. Catering was able to create ramps that were used to roll their food carts up into the home. The second issue was how we would move the mother of the bride into the art gallery for the ceremony from her bedroom. While she could walk with assistance, the trek was too far to make at once. We overcame this issue by carefully watching the timeline and starting her move early. She went to different rooms in phases and would gather her strength in between. It was truly exhausting for her, but worth it all when she saw her daughter walking down the aisle.

FOOD + BEVERAGE: The time of the ceremony and wedding was designed around the couple’s favorite meal, brunch. They love having brunch together and we felt it was the perfect meal to share with their family and closest friends. Bringing on Wolfgang Puck Catering to pull off this feat in one week was a simple choice. We knew that they could customize a menu to the liking of our client.

Catering details started as soon as the guests exited the ceremony. They were greeted by an assortment of hors d’oeuvres. Mini quiche lorraine bites, french toast sticks, smoked salmon pizza, and deviled quail eggs were enjoyed by all. In sentimental fashion, the wine served at the wedding was from the wine cellar in the family home. This paired with a mimosa and aperol spritz where passed on trays as they entered the cocktail patio. The aperol spritz delivered a punch of tangerine while the mimosa served up a soft yellow palette for the trays.

Once guests entered the home, the real feast began. A three-course brunch was customized for Devan and Haden in two short days. The first course was a caramelized fig and manchego salad served on a gold fleur plate that completed the preset chargers from Top Tier Event Rentals. Displayed on the table was an assortment of muffins and breakfast breads on white cake stands. It elevated the food from being displayed in a bowl and created dimension on the table design. The second course was the favorite of the couple and one that was not the easiest choice for large group service. All guests received an eggs benedict on a gold rimmed plate and sides were served family style in white bowls. The sides consisted of roasted potatoes, applewood smoked bacon, and fresh fruit. We loved the component of a plated main dish with passed family sides. It reiterated the formality yet closeness of the party. For the third course, guests enjoyed the cake that was previously cut by the couple. They couldn’t choose between three flavors, so we did them all. This was a celebration of love and life after all. Vanilla, snickerdoodle, and chocolate cake served on a white braided dessert plate capped the perfect meal.

PRINTED MATERIALS: While working with couples, we say that to be formal in tradition you should send a printed invitation in the mail. However, what if you don’t have the time? Guests at the wedding of Haden and Devan received something even more special, they each received personalized phone calls. These calls invited them to a day of celebration of love and life.

At the ceremony, the bride wanted to break tradition and not have programs. She felt since it was an intimate gathering of family and close friends there wasn’t a need for that formality. However, for their guest book, the couple chose a beautiful coffee book titled Earth From Above. It is something they now display in their home and enjoy the notes of sentiment left throughout the pages.

As guests entered into the brunch portion of the morning, the custom designed menus by 5by7 Designs also stated their place cards. On the top of each card was the name of the guest written in orchid colored cursive font. This allowed them to know where to be seated and what they would be served throughout the culinary experience.

DECOR: Seeing the beauty of the home, we desired for the décor to highlight and not compete. The bride wanted her favorite color purple to be represented along with her mom’s favorite flower which was an orchid.

For the ceremony design, we brought in gold chairs that accented the gold frames already found on the artwork displayed in the gallery. A lush floral runner was placed on the mantle with draping orchids. A beautiful work of art was on the mantle accented with the glamorous floral. It was truly a magnificent piece. To the right of the mantle we placed the crystal unity candle on a lucite pillar so that it did not demand attention and distract from the floral. The room was filled not only with chairs, but with beautiful piano music played by Luana Stoutmeyer. For us, design isn’t just floral, it is what the senses experience throughout an entire event. The sound filled the room with warmth and celebration.

When designing the cocktail hour, we wanted to be respectful of the furniture that was already in place and chosen by the mother of the bride. We added accent floral pieces to the patio furniture. A guest book table was adorned with a textured white linen that allowed guests to sign at their convenience. In addition, we placed the cake in cocktail hour. Since the guests would be seated and remain seated once entering the home, we wanted the cake to be adored during this time. For the cake table, it was covered with an orchid purple velvet linen that served as a foreshadow for what was to come. A crystal cake stand was selected for the glamor and height it allowed. When designing the cake, we incorporated a replica of the lace from the bride’s gown. This is a gown that will forever hold a special place in my heart because it is the day that I had to take off my traditional planning hat and play the role of friend and mom. When we realized the wedding was being moved, we knew the bride’s previously ordered gown would not arrive in time. After the site visit, I took the bride to a store that had the opportunity to overnight gowns to us. The bride fell in love with this silhouette and lace which she ended up loving more than her original gown. We bought it on the spot and it was in her hands the next day. It was a special memory and one that played a role in the design.

The design for the brunch portion of the wedding celebration was created with community in mind. The guests moved into what was typically the living room for brunch. All furniture was moved out and two long tables were designed to seat exactly 50. It was important to the couple that everyone know how special they were to them and they wanted that reflected in the seating arrangements. It was two family tables full of love. The layout was constructed of 24’ runs of tables. This maximized every inch of space available in this room. It was the largest room we had to work with and we made it an ideal setup. The room was adorned with large white floral pieces that contained draping orchids. A floral runner continued on the table intertwined with candlelight. All of this beauty was supported by a soft oatmeal velvet linen from Nuage. In selecting this linen, it was important to us not only that the color was perfect but that the texture was something the mother could rest her arms on if she was to join. It was soft to the touch of fingertips. The napkins accented the bride’s orchid purple color she desired in the design. Folded on the plates, the napkins sat underneath the custom designed menu cards. The menu cards served as a place card as well and coordinated with their orchid text. The accent metal was gold and could be found in the chairs and flatware. Gold highlighted some of the antiques and artwork already found in the space. It was a flawless compliment.

UNIQUE SUPPORT ELEMENTS: While the original wedding included the special elements of lighting, staging, and A/V components, this was different. When the wedding was moved to eight days away the couple turned their focus to what was truly important, the commitment they would make before God and their parents. Unique supporting elements for this design went beyond what could be viewed, to what was felt. It encompassed all senses. The sound filled the space with warmth and was customized with their favorite songs. The smell was that of orchids and draping floral. The taste was that of the couple’s favorite brunch foods. The touch was of soft velvet for the mom’s comfort. The sight was not only the amazing décor, but that of a young couple overjoyed with their special day. Although it was not the original plan.

ENTERTAINMENT: One of the obstacles was space. Keeping this in mind, we chose to select a solo pianist that would be able to move effortlessly from ceremony, to cocktail hour, and into the brunch reception. Luana Stoutmeyer was the obvious choice and she poured her entire heart into this wedding. In order to set the scene for how emotional of a day this was for all involved, Luana played the processional for the parents to walk in to. After seeing the mom struggle to make it down the aisle and her daughter walking in looking like an angel, she began to cry. There were many tears shed that day by all vendors involved. This is what makes this wedding so different from those we experience on a monthly basis. While the design is still stunning, it is about the heart that was poured into this wedding that truly makes it a wedding of the year.

Luana met with the couple the day before the wedding and played their first dance songs for them to hear. They were overjoyed and very excited for the next day, their wedding day. What they didn’t know is that Luana had gone the extra mile and hired a vocalist to perform for their first dances. As the couple became the center of attention and began dancing to The Promise, a vocalist filled the air. What made the moment even more magical was that while the mom couldn’t attend the first dances due to the exhaustion of the ceremony, she was in the room directly above the pool and was able to experience the moment through sound.

Modern Meets Colorful Korean Traditional Wedding Inspiration

There’s nothing more I love than seeing tradition infused into a wedding celebration—those are the moments that really give a wedding it’s heartbeat. But what might be the icing on the cake is seeing modern takes on tradition… “ways that make the old feel new and the new feel timeless,” as Nancy of So Happi Together describes of this editorial she produced with Sally Pinera. It’s an explosion of pastel punchy goodness, with layers of design elements from the incredibly talented vendor team below. Make sure to sift through every bit in the full collection of images (there are details galore!) and take a peek at the end of the post for 3 modern takes on Korean wedding traditions we spotted.

From So Happi TogetherMore and more, we have been approached by couples who want want our help in designing a wedding that celebrates their cultural traditions and heritage at their wedding. Our goal is to do so in a way that reflects a modern aesthetic and their current style. We have always worked with couples from different backgrounds and it is becoming more common to host multi-day weddings that allow interracial or inter-cultural couples to celebrate all the traditions that the joining of their families represents. We find this to be a beautiful and meaningful trend in the wedding industry and wanted to do our part to add to the inspiration that is available to brides who want to honor their culture in modern ways that make the old feel new and the new feel timeless.

Sally Pinera and I are frequent partners in crime and our work attracts a select niche of brides who are looking for intentional design that is captured in classic and romantic ways. We strive for an understated elegance that exudes luxury without feeling ostentatious or SUPERFLUOUS. Our brides value the luxury of the details over the look of the over-the-top and the over-done. Their wedding is as unique as their story and we strive to share this story through our design and imagery.

When producing inspiration shoots, I don’t have a couple or their story to base my design off of… so I find design elements that excite me and create a story around those details! The Oscar de la Renta china from Casa de Perrin played a large part in inspiring the color palette and design for our Modern Korean Photoshoot. I loved the intricate florals and knew that flowers would have to play a big role in our design. We wanted something interesting, textured and playful.

The idea of tradition can feel static, but we wanted to display how tradition can be reinterpreted and reimagined to reflect modern sensibilities. For this reason, our color palette was comprised of fresh tones that could be described as pastels with a punch! We wanted to play with the colors of silk hanboks and started with a foundation of orange and peach hues complemented with pink tones and accents or lilac, royal blue, yellow and gold. Different elements like jade, velvet, rice paper, mother of pearl, brass, silk and gold produced layers of design.

The hanboks themselves were provided by Meehee Hanbok and one of our favorite DESIGNS was her modern take on the male hanbok. When I saw this piece, I immediately knew that I wanted to soften up the look by pairing it with a traditional male hat adorned with overflowing floral pieces. We wanted the juxtaposition of this masculine look next to the more feminine, larger than life gowns, to show the wide breadth of design possible with traditional elements.

Bridal fashion stylist, Gabrielle Hurwitz, provided us with a Marchesa gown who’s pink velvet tie waistband and intricate beading paralleled with our invitation design and portrayed our fresh pastel palette. Feminine, pointed toed Bella Belle shoes and matching accessories elevated our couture bridal look. The Viktor and Rolf wedding gown she provided had a voluminous shape that, some may say, alludes to the shape of the traditional Korean hanbok. With its flare starting directly under the bust rather than at the waistline.

The floral mastermind, Siren Floral Co provided blood orange colored raining tree pods that played an integral part of our floral design. The loose and naturally falling look of both fresh and dried tree pods helped complete almost all of our vignettes. Her fresh coral colored florals that decorated the traditional male hat added a whimsical and organic aesthetic to the look.

Nossi bojagi is the one and only bojagi art brand in the US. She uses traditional Korean materials and fabrics to show the art of sustainable wrapping. We showcased the versatility of her wrapping by adding florals that bloomed out of one of her larger wrapped silk boxes.

Found Rentals’ wide range of amazing vintage furniture also brought a lot of inspiration to the different scenes we would create. The barren side tables acted as the perfect addition to our masculine hanbok and airy fabric and feminine hanbok looks. While the orange Imperial Settee added a regal touch to our various hanbok and wedding gown shots. Premiere Party Rents provided our general rentals. Theoni Collection’s Gramercy Brass White Chairs brought a contemporary contrast to the different peach tones and textures of our table scape.

To bring a contrast to the Oscar de la Renta Coraline China which would be the main focus of our table scape, we paired their charger and salad plate with beautiful Heath Ceramic Sunrise dinner and bread plates all provided by Casa de Perrin. Their mismatched vintage amber water goblets and crystal amber salt cellars added texture next to our modern white and gold GOA flatware and blush gold rimmed glassware. Lastly, we can’t forget about their tiny gold spoons, which we think adds the cutest final touch!

La Tavola Linen provided a velvet tamarind colored linen our main table setting and their beautiful colored velvet drapes acted as our surface and backdrop for several shots. The luxe texture of the velvet linen created not only a clean look for our table setting and multiple detail shots, but also, an organic and naturally flowing backdrop for a number of our other vignettes.

A very big part of traditional Korean celebrations is incorporating traditional Korean rice cakes. Rice Blossoms uses all natural fruit coloring in her bean paste frosting to hand pipe intricate floral designs onto her modern take of the traditional rice cake. We put a traditional twist on the trendy naked cake, by having her create a three-tiered traditional rice cake adorned with a half-crescent wreath of hand piped florals. She also provided rice cupcakes, bite sized rice cakes, and one of my favorites, songpyeuns; a sweet, chewy rice cake with sweet sesame filling, shaped and colored like different fruits and leaves. Specialty flower pressed cookies by Lori A Stern added a colorful and western twist to our traditional Korean rice cake treats.

With so many different pops of color, we wanted to make sure the cake complimented the palette with an understated elegance. A muted peach colored two tier cake by Sweetleemade was complimented by gorgeous hand dyed coral ombre silk ribbon from Silk and Willow for a touch of softness to the clean and modern look of the cake. For an extra layer of color, we placed layers of cake onto Casa de Perrin’s Blue Garden Vintage China and Heath Sunrise plates for our “Let Them Eat Cake!!” shot of our lovely model dreaming in a sea of florals and cake slices. And if you are wondering, yes, we did eat all of those extra slices of cake – no cake was harmed in the making of this production!

Red Letter Day brought to life a gilded foil invitation suite with classic calligraphy and lavender edge painted was complimented by delicate watercolor illustration. A pop of color in her orange envelopes lined with a white and royal blue pattern helped complete the suite. Her muted gold and royal blue scroll menus were the perfect pop of color for our table scape atop our velvet tamarind linen.

From the Bride…Scott and I met in our hometown West Chester, Pennsylvania, however, it wasn’t until after college that we really got to know one another. My best friend from high school was dating Scott’s older brother and introduced us. From the moment I met Scott there was something that sparked inside of me and I knew that one day I would marry him.

Before hearing more of Ariel and Scott’s story, let’s watch — and listen — as they exchange their emotion-packed vows captured by NST Pictures!

More from the Bride… Although we faced the challenge of long distance and living in two different cities during most of our relationship, we were determined to make it work and see each other every weekend. Much of our relationship was meeting the other person halfway which was one reason we picked our venue, Excelsior, located halfway between Philadelphia and Baltimore.

Scott and I envisioned a modern bohemian theme with as much greenery as possible! Once we saw the green wall at Excelsior we knew we had found our venue. Our wedding day could not have been more perfect (less the high 90s temperature) from the ceremony in front of the stunning green wall, to the cocktail hour in the catacombs and courtyard, formal dinner upstairs and dancing the night away with a wonderful band.

I had always dreamed of ending my wedding day walking side by side with my husband between all of our family and friends holding sparklers and our amazing vendors were able to pull it off to perfection!

Each of our vendors made us feel so special throughout the whole process. Scott and I feel very blessed to have had so many great people turn our visons into our dream wedding! The pictures speak for themselves…

A Rustic Countryside Wedding at Stonefields Estate with a Raw, Inspiring Story

Today we’re sharing a touching story of love and loss. A wedding day captured by Stephanie Mason Photography at Stonefields Estate that will pull at your heart strings, leave you inspired and most importantly – remind you to love unapologetically, hold your loved ones close and live every day to its fullest. The sheer strength of this stunning bride will shake you to your core. We feel so incredibly honored to be able to share her raw and emotional story with you all today, continue on to read her beautiful and brave words…

From Stephanie Mason PhotographyMikaela and Shane’s wedding day was right out of a fairytale. They were surrounded by family and friends by one of the most elegant rustic countryside venues in the city. Mikaela was the ultimate DIY bride making a lot of the decor herself. When her wedding day arrived she was eagerly putting her finishing touches together. She was calm, laid back and excited to meet her future husband at the end of the aisle. After slipping into her wedding dress, giving her children a big hug, she was ready to say her vows.

Mikaela and Shane’s children played a big role in the wedding. Their family and friends witness their two little ones walk down the aisle. Once the ceremony was done, you could see them playing freely on Stonefield’s Estate sprawling acreage. Mikaela even found out that they were expecting their third child that was expected to arrive the following Spring. Only months after Mikaela and Shane’s wedding day, Shane went on a trip and unfortunately suddenly passed away while away. It was a huge shock to all of her family and friends. She said her I do’s to live happy ever after for the rest of their lives but Mikaela didn’t think she would be robbed of time with her new spouse. Mikaela writes often to help her grieving process and says, “For better or for worse, till’ death do us part” is a vow we both took very seriously. Both coming from families who’s parents were married young and still together after 25+ years of marriage, we knew in our hearts that no matter what obstacles we faced our love and devotion to one another was going to last a lifetime.

Our wedding was beyond perfect just like our life together before getting married. In just 4 short years, my future husband took on the role of becoming my daughters step father, we bought a house together, got engaged, had a beautiful little boy together, went on a breathtaking European honeymoon adventure, got married and to top it off got pregnant again with a sweet little girl. Little did we both know, only 5 months after saying, “ I do” , our perfect life we created together was devastatingly flipped upside down. My loving husband, my soulmate and whom I thought was going to be my life partner tragically and suddenly passed away while on a weekend trip with some friends. The sudden and still very fresh loss my children and I have experienced has truly been the most heartbreaking, life altering experience I’ve had to face in my 24 years of life. I was robbed, stripped away of any chance at continuing to build a life together with Shane. When I lost him, I also lost a part of myself. Who I am will forever be split in two. It’s now, who I was before the accident and who I’m turning into after the accident. I’m forced to rediscover and redefine who I am without him.

Through all this pain, I still try my best to remain optimistic and hopeful. I know in my heart that my kids and I will be alright, that we will slowly heal together as a family and our life will still be filled with happiness and blessings. I am so thankful of the time I did have with my husband before he was called to heaven. I’m thankful for all the love, the adventures, the most joyous moments, and the laughs. In 4 years, we got to do so much together. It was truly a life well loved and lived. This is a sad ending to one life chapter but also the start of a new one. One that will be filled with so much love and healing in which my husbands light will always be present, helping guide us through it.”

It is a reminder that through all the planning and the stressful times wedding planning can sometimes bring on, that the most important part of your day is that you are marrying your best friend. It is a reminder to love unapologetically hard and live each day to its fullest. Mikaela is such a strong woman that has been inspiring our whole community through her writing and sharing her raw story. She reminds us without even really knowing it that we need to put the silly arguments and stresses aside and to appreciate the present. Hold your loved ones close and always tell them you love them. Cherish each day and be thankful for the opportunities and adventures that await you. Remember to live in the now and reflect on your blessings often.

A Rustic Fall Wedding at Hayfield Catskill Alive with Vibrant Color

It may be on the cusp of Summer, but it’s a crisp Fall day in our minds thanks to this gorgeous wedding captured by Elena Wolfe Photography. The beautiful bride and her handsome hub chose a bright color scheme rich with orange, pink and burgundy hues complimenting the Fall foliage surrounding their venue, Hayfield Catskill, in upstate New York. The lucky bridesmaids were able to choose their very own dream dress for the special day, allowing their unique personalities to shine through! Oh, and prepare to be wow-ed by the colorful arrangements from Heart and Soil Flowers. Keep on reading to step inside this charming day, planned to perfection by Modern Kicks.

From the Bride… We got engaged in Camden, Maine over July 4 weekend when we were there on a family trip. I always wanted an emerald engagement ring however my husband would not let me be part of any ring design. All I was able to share was what stone I wanted and my ring size and he insisted on doing everything else, which meant I knew nothing about the ring until the moment he pulled it out and proposed. The emerald stone had been set in a man’s ring that belonged to my husband’s late grandfather. Before we got engaged, when my husband told his grandmother he wanted to propose and I wanted an emerald, she got the ring and gave it to him and he had the stone reset in a new design. It is truly one of my most treasured possessions and incredibly special to have a part of his grandparents with us all the time.

When we got engaged we already knew we wanted a fall wedding with the backdrop of the outdoors and the foliage at its peak. Hayfield truly embodied everything we were looking for and the barns and the beautiful surroundings laid the foundation for the aesthetic direction we went in – especially the colorful leaves which inspired the colors that were featured in the floral arrangements by Heart and Soil Flowers, the bridal bouquet and the color palette I gave my bridesmaids so they could choose their dresses. Overall we wanted our wedding to be a fun celebration where our guests could enjoy themselves, enjoy the natural beauty of the Catskills and have a memorable time.

My dress was one of my most favorite parts of the wedding. Going dress shopping I really had no idea what I wanted and therefore I tried lots and lots of different shapes, fabrics, cuts, etc. This Halfpenny London top and skirt combination really embodied our wedding for me, a beautiful shape – the satin top bringing a classic touch and the fringe skirt adding playfulness and ease which felt appropriate given the barn and outdoor setting. It was important to me that each bridesmaid be able to choose their dress – color, style, everything – as I wanted everyone to be comfortable and feel their best.

I love the mismatch look and encouraged each of them to choose dresses with embellishments, prints, different textures and fabrics, etc. I loved each dress they chose, I loved how they really fit each bridesmaid’s personality and the way they looked all together at the wedding was exactly what I envisioned. We wrote the table assignments on vintage window frames we rented from Hudson Valley Vintage Rentals. The look and feel of that display fit perfectly with the rustic beauty of the barns and gave a nice, no frill touch to the seating.

My sister in law designed the wedding invitations and we worked very closely with her on all elements of the aesthetic direction. She then painted the leaves in watercolor before scanning them digitally to create the invitations. Those motifs were utilized throughout the invitation suite as well as the programs, menu, table settings, etc. At the wedding. We had a short non-denominational ceremony officiated by a dear friend of ours which made the experience incredibly special. Having someone so close to us, who knows us both really well and therefore was able to bring a very personal touch to the celebration and then be the one to pronounce us husband and wife was one of our favorite moments.

How to Integrate A Pop of Color into Your Wedding Day

One thing I know to be true in my years of curating wedding features… pink and pups are two things you babes love. Without fail, our Instagram account blows up when we put little sweeties like this in the spotlight. But once you are able to come down from the cuteness high—I urge you to soak in this full editorial from Ashley RaeAshley Baumgartner and Bloom + Blueprint, doused in pink—because it’s the perfect blueprint on how to add a “pop of color” into your Big Day design.

“Mere color, unspoiled by meaning, and unallied with definite form, can speak to the soul in a thousand different ways”. ~Oscar Wilde

Hidden between the lush greens and desert tones of the Royal Palms Resort laid a one-of-a-kind wedding experience. The perfect mix of soft and vivid tones. A high end colorful yet classic experience for the bride, Brittany, to tie the knot with her beau, AJ. Designed by Ashley Rae Photography for our 1:1 mentorship, this styled wedding editorial featured a feminine, ombre effect to appeal to even the most elegant bride. The team wanted to create a design that took classic feminine elements and integrated a pop of color, to show brides that they can add color to their perfect wedding day. More than just an accent of blush here and there.

Bloom and Blueprint created a stunning floral display for the bride and groom’s ceremony and reception backdrop, not to mention the perfect ombre tabletop centerpiece sure to make any bride swoon. The lovely, classic table was adorned with white cross back chairs from Bright Event Rentals that needed a pop of color as well. Chiffon draped off the guests’ seating arrangement, adorned with with an ombre pallet of floating florals. Ombre florals also adorned a beautiful cake by Maeflour Cakes and their champagne flutes.

The bride wore a stunningly classic gown from Schaefer’s Bridal and opted for Hollywood glam, classic-chic look by Kensington Makeup. Combined with her groom’s classic look from The Black Tux and a glam pair of pink Christian Louboutin heels, the two were ready to tie the knot, and cuddle several adorable French Bulldog puppies from Frenchies and Flowers. The puppies, Gigi, Theo and Bri were adorned with blooms from Bloom and Blueprint as they escorted the bride and groom throughout their wedding day. Because the perfect day wouldn’t be complete without puppies!
