DC Military Wedding at Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium

Wedding planning can be stressful, but trying to do it when the groom is in Afghanistan seems like a whole other feat. As I went through this elegant affair, I not only was in awe of SoCo Events, but also of the adoration shown by this couple in every stunning photo by Justine Ungaro. As we honor our veterans today, I’m also recognizing the love shared with this celebration and soaking up every bit of it.

From SoCo Events… Classic and sparkle were the theme for this elegant DC wedding. The groom was doing a tour in Afghanistan when the wedding planning began and it was so important for the bride to include him in as much of the planning process as possible. When she saw the Andrew Mellon Auditorium in all its grandness, she just knew that Clay would love it. Tradition was important to the bride and groom, so the decor kept to a theme of classic ivory and gold, but with hints of sparkle to represent the bride’s love of all things shiny!

The Bride’s favorite wedding detail was champagne sequin tablecloths- they made the whole room sparkle! The Groom’s favorite wedding detail was the balcony that overlooked the entire venue where he and Regina had a few quiet moments together watching their wedding from above.

Their biggest surprise of the wedding was when the priest had asked them several questions via email regarding marriage, what they love about each other and why they want to be married and told them not to share our answers. During the ceremony the priest read exerts from each of their answers which was a huge surprise to both of them. It was as though they wrote their own vows but didn’t know it and didn’t have to say them themselves.

Some wedding favors and special décor details that standout were five white Jordan almonds wrapped in a tulle bag and tied with a ribbon and a tag explaining that the five almonds represent five wishes for the new couple: health, wealth, happiness, children and a long life.

Traditional Elegance with a Twist at the Anderson House

There is nothing I love more than when a couple takes a stunning traditional wedding and gives it a good ol’ stylish twist. It infuses the day with personality and gives us countless details to swoon over. This glam D.C. stunner planned to perfection by Atrendy Wedding and captured by Justine Ungaro is just such a fête. Oh and that ceremony setting? I can’t even. So good.

From The Bride…We have always enjoyed going above and beyond as hosts for any and all occasions. We are both entertainers and often find any excuse to gather friends and family at our apartment. Whether it is a dinner party, a birthday celebration, or a rooftop BBQ, we are always looking to throw a good soiree! So it was only fitting that we chose the Anderson House as the venue to celebrate our marriage! Ambassador Larz and Isabel Anderson built this Washington, DC mansion in the early 1900’s to distinguish themselves among the capital city’s most sought after hosts. The Anderson House became known as one of DC’s grandest locations for fashionable galas and events. This historical landmark, with its breathtaking beauty and grandeur, truly was the ideal setting for us to celebrate our love for one another surrounded by our closest friends and family.

Once we secured our venue we quickly sought out a wedding planner (Pam Barefoot) who shared our vision. We imagined our wedding happening towards the end of Summer or the beginning of Fall. So we settled on the eve of autumn, September 21, 2013 (the equinox). Not only was weather a big influence since September is one of the loveliest times of year in Washington, DC, but creating an event that felt representative of our personalities was also a key consideration. We wanted our guests to feel as if they were coming into a grand party at our home (for the day), the Anderson House. Both of us wanted a traditional wedding with a bit of uniqueness in some of the details. The Friends Meeting House, which is a Quaker Church, was the site for our ceremony. We had an interfaith Methodist/Jewish wedding, so it was a great setting to welcome all guests from all backgrounds. We opted for a lighter romantic ceremony and cocktail hour – filled with hints of blush and cream colors. And we hoped for a dramatic entrance to dinner, which took place around the reflecting pool in the back garden of the Anderson House. With the help of Pam, we created a fun atmosphere for dinner and dancing by incorporating some fun details in the color of navy, pink along with a Moroccan print.

Throughout the planning process Natalie was certain that the weather was going to be sunny and beautiful on our wedding day. She even researched the Farmer’s Almanac and learned that in the previous eight or nine years it had been consistently dry weather with temperatures in the upper 70s on September 21st. Through the first three weeks of September it seemed like Natalie’s prediction would be spot on, as the weather in DC could not have been better.

However, as luck would have it, Mother Nature took her course and it rained on our wedding day for nearly seven straight hours. The rain began to fall right before the start of our ceremony and continued throughout our entire dinner. Thanks to our amazing planner, Pam, we had reserved tents a few days before just to be on the safe side. As it turned out, our wedding could not have been lovelier! The unexpected torrential downpour made our guests feel even cozier under the gorgeously lit tents, and the overall ambiance of our special night was exactly how we had hoped it would be – intimate, romantic, and just plain fun!

From Abby Jiu PhotographyAfter Lauren attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York and cooking in restaurants, she quickly learned that food was one of her biggest passions. She even wrote her own menu to include her love of classic French food with newer food concepts. Table side choice, local cheeses and seasonal/local produce included in a 4 course plated meal for all. The meal was finished with an organic cake made from local ingredients, a circulating candy cart, Ben’s favorite childhood sweets (root beer floats and ice cream sandwiches) served on the dance floor, and hot cookies, apple cider, and hot chocolate as guests departed. No one was to leave hungry!

Aside from food Lauren found herself very inspired by tiny white flowers. After seeing a picture of tiny white arabicum for floral inspiration, and finding her dress with a bodice full of tiny white flowers, she was hooked! The arabicum flowers made there way into my invitation, all of the printed materials, welcome bag, floral decor, and even into the paper flower decor. Everything that was not based on her love of food, was based on the shape of the arabicum flower.

Classic Romance at the Hay Adams Hotel

When the story starts with a good proposal story, it’s safe to say the wedding that follows is going to be fabulous. And these two cuties have a seriously good proposal story, including a boat ride, some undercover video capturing by the Groom and a surprise visit by family and friends. The wedding was bound to be pretty. Add Roberts & Co. Events into the mix and we’re graced with the resulting gorgeous gallery from Sweet Tea Photography.

From the beautiful Bride…There is a bit of a discrepancy of the actual meeting. Phil claims he met me when all of our friends met up at a restaurant downtown before a party one summer, however, I do not remember this, and I am pretty sure I would remember meeting him! My story is that we met later the next winter at a party with a bunch of our friends. We were both dating other people so I figured it was “safe” to chat with him. We ended up hanging out the entire night, and I think I subconsciously knew that I would eventually date him. A few months later, the stars aligned and we met up again, out and about, and the rest is history!

After 4 years, Phil proposed to me! Phil and I went to his parent’s house last July. On Saturday morning we had planned to take the boat out to watch the log canoe races on the river (something we do every summer). When we were packing our things to get on the boat, I remember noticing how nice he looked. I think I even said something along the lines of “Wow! Don’t you look nice in your collared shirt!” His mom was there and laughed and Phil just said “Oh, I wanted a collar so my neck doesn’t get too much sun.” Phil definitely seemed on edge, but I was so oblivious to it at the time, it’s only obvious looking back. I had given Phil a GoPro camera for his birthday in March and he had set it up on the center console of the boat, he had been taking a lot of boat videos and I assumed that he wanted to capture the races so it didn’t seem odd to me. Phil asked me to sit up front, which I did find odd, so he said he wanted to have me in the video with the sailboats in the background, so I just shrugged it off and sat up front. When we got to a place we could watch the races, Phil asked me if I wanted a beer and I though to myself, “Seriously, it’s like 11:00am!” I kind of gave him a look and so I said ok. When he came to the front of the boat with my beer, he got down on one knee and proposed. I could tell he had a speech thought up in his head but he was so nervous, all he could say was “Will you marry me?” He then grabbed a bottle of champagne from the cooler and then we started calling family members. About 10 minutes later, our friends pulled up and surprised with even more champagne! Later that afternoon, we headed back to Phil’s parent’s house and as we pulled up to the doc, I noticed tables set up in the lawn and a very peculiar brunette lounging by the pool. As we docked the boat, my best friend Emily, who lives in South America, greeted us at the doc, along with Phil’s brother Andrew and his girlfriend, Gwen (who is also one of my best friends). I got some time to catch up with Emily and Gwen at the pool (and show off my new ring!) before we went upstairs to get ready for dinner. At this point, I knew there was some sort of dinner planned, with the tables in the lawn and the caterer in the kitchen but when I turned out of the kitchen, my dad was standing in the next room! Then my mom came from down the hallway! I was so surprised because when I had called them earlier to tell them the news, they seemed very surprised, but obviously they knew what was going on. As we went outside, our friends that had met up with us earlier were waiting for us as well! My mother in law had planned the most amazing meal, with some of my favorite things but the best was the strawberry shortcake (my all time favorite dessert) with a diamond ring placed on top! I know this is a super long story, but it was honestly the best day of my life (up until that time). Not only did Phil surprise me with the proposal, but having my best friend from Paraguay join us, and including my family and friends, meant so much to me!

Having an outdoor aspect was really important to me when choosing a venue. We were also very interested in having our reception in Washington, DC, since we live downtown. My family is from Alexandria, Virginia and his is from Chestertown, Maryland, so we were excited to show our friends and family our new home.I had always imagined an outdoor tented wedding. Finding a venue that could do that, in the DC area, that could also accommodate the number of guests we wanted was impossible. When we found the Hay-Adams, it almost made that a reality with the outdoor catwalk on the rooftop. The Hay-Adams rooftop has the most breathtaking view in Washington, but what really made us choose this venue were the people. The catering director was always so friendly and accommodating, they really wanted to make our wedding day spectacular!

Our wedding theme/colors/decor really centered around my favorite flower, hydrangeas. Specifically the ones that are light blue, white and maybe a little green (I know, very specific!) We wanted something summery, relaxed, but elegant. Our centerpieces were a combination of high and low hydrangea arrangements in glass vases, very simple and clean, so we did not take away from the view! We had brought in gold chairs and gold charges to bring in our accent color and the tablecloths were a champagne damask pattern. We made little jars with crab seasoning to be placed at everyone’s seat to bring in the Eastern Shore, I love the crab charm we found to attach to each jar! Phil is very proud of his local crab seasoning, he literally puts it on everything, even pasta! His parents have a farm house and the farmer who farms the land also has a crabbing business. We buy crabs from him in the summer and when Phil’s mother asked if we could buy a large amount of seasoning, they practically gave it to us! I thought it would be nice to share a part of the Eastern Shore with our guests. My mom and I ordered the jars from an online favor store, got the string from a craft store, made the tags and ordered the gold crab charms! I love how they turned out!

Since I knew we were going with light blue hydrangeas, I thought light blue would be a good color for the bridesmaids, since it looks good on basically every skin tone, hair color, etc. When we went to try on the dresses, they didn’t have the color in a sample, only a small swatch. I ordered larger swatches along with some other colors, but when I saw the light blue swatch, it was absolutely perfect! We really lucked out with such a perfect color and when the dressed came in, they were even better than what I had expected!

Phil and I have a friend who lives in our building who makes custom suits. He asked Phil if he could make the suits for our wedding and we, of course, said yes! We knew we wanted navy suits so when Phil and the guys went down to the shop to get measured, I thought I had chosen all the details (suit color, shirt color, button type, etc.). I guess we overlooked in the inside lining and one of Phil’s groomsmen found the Parana print. When they say it, they knew they had to have it. When the suits came in, Phil told me, not to get mad but our friend Matt chose the inside linings. I immediately needed to see it, and when I did, I at first was a little annoyed that this wasn’t run by me at all, but could only stay mad for a minute because it was so cool and so them! Phil and his friends love hunting and fishing, and as you know, have quite the personalities. The print was so perfectly them, I immediately fell in love with it! Apparently, the suits had been hanging in the showroom and our friend has sold a lot more of that Parana print!

I think my favorite detail from the wedding was the escort cards. I really wanted to bring the Eastern Shore of Maryland to our wedding so I hand-wrote everyone’s name and table number on oyster shells. When I first thought of the idea, it seemed pretty simple, but after finding all the shells, cleaning them, and then writing everyone’s name in cursive (which I hadn’t done since high school probably!) it was quite an endeavor. I think they came out better than I had imagined!

I do want to make sure that I mention how much I love our wedding invitation suite. I wanted something that was traditional but not the same thing you see everyday. The people we worked with (Digby and Rose), were amazing. They had me send a couple inspirational pictures, describe color schemes, etc and came up with the entire design, which was amazing. The color of the paper, the design of the different pieces and the floral detail was so beautiful! They also did our “Save The Dates” which we loved because they were so DC but in a really neat, artistic way!

Our cakes were done by Kendall’s cakes. When we got to choose flavors to taste, I had heard about the tupelo honey cake and when I suggested it, Phil gave me a funny look. Of course when we tried it, we both immediately fell in love. The design of the cake, I had found something similar on pinterest that I liked with the dots and the sugar flowers. They suggested to add the light blue line which I loved! The topper, I got from etsy and I think really tied our whole decor into the cake! The groom’s cake was another story! My mom and I knew we wanted to do one and I told Phil before the tasting that at one point during the tasting, he would need to leave the room and not ask any questions. He agreed, but when we got to the tasting and I suggested Phil go to the bathroom, my dad almost ruined it! He was like “Why does he need to go to the bathroom? Why are you telling him to go? Should I go too? What’s going on?” My mom gave him a look and Phil scooted. Once Phil was gone we had t explain the whole groom’s cake idea to my dad, who still didn’t really get it lol! I knew I wanted to like-like duck! Phil is an avid waterfowl hunter and it would be perfect! The cake designer basically read my mind! When Phil and I were waiting in the hallway to be introduced, I pointed out the cake and he asked me why I had brought a decoy in! I told him it was a cake! He was in shock and absolutely loved it! Later at the after party, everyone was passing around the head, which was made of rice crispy treats.

My favorite memory from the wedding was saying our wedding vows. I was surprised at how emotional I got. But then, my fondest memory is my first dance with Phil. He never dances with me at weddings and all I wanted was to dance with him at our wedding!

I would tell future engagement couples to not sweat the small stuff. It is so easy to get wrapped up in little details or little things, that in the end don’t really matter. Enjoy the time with the people who are making it happen, in our case, our family.

Their honeymoon was in St. Barths! Phil’s parent’s neighbors gave them their house for a week! Mallory works as a Special Education Evaluator and Phil as an Outreach Coordinator. Mallory and Phil live in downtown Washington, DC.

Urban Georgetown Loft Wedding at Powerhouse

From Vicki Grafton PhotographyKatie and Carter were married on May 10th. Their ceremony and reception can be described as having an urban loft feel with succulents and soft blues and greens. They had their first look across the street from their apartment on the grounds of the national cathedral and then traveled down to the heart of Georgetown for their outdoor ceremony. After the ceremony, guests were welcomed inside the historic Powerhouse which was originally constructed in 1917 by the D.C. Paper Manufacturing Company. With 30’ high ceilings, dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the C&O Canal, and a smokestack which rises through the building to a height of 150 feet, towering over the Georgetown skyline, it was a unique space for guests to mingle and explore and dance the night away.

From The Bride…Carter and I dated in high school and went to prom together, but decided to go our separate ways once it was time to go off to college. However, we always remained friends and stayed in touch over the years. While Carter moved back to Washington, D.C. (where we grew up), after college, I settled in New York. In December of 2010, we found ourselves back in D.C. over the holidays, catching up with a few friends from home over drinks, and we realized there might still be something there. Over the course of the next few months, we re-started our relationship from a distance, and in June of 2012 I moved back to D.C. to be with Carter. We were engaged on October 2, 2013.

Carter and I wanted to get married at home in D.C., and we were looking for a unique venue with a “party” atmosphere. Between the two of us, we had been to probably over 50 weddings, but it was still important to us to try to make our special day unique. The Powerhouse, the event space where our wedding took place, was the second venue we saw, but we knew immediately it was “the one.” The venue was relatively new as an event space, and right in the heart of Georgetown which we knew would be fun for out of town guests. I loved the exposed brick, the balcony over looking the dance floor, the huge smokestack running up one end of the interior and the overall industrial feel; the space could be dressed up any way we wanted it to be. There was also outdoor space right next to the venue, and right next to the C&O Canal, that we thought would be awesome for an outdoor ceremony.

After we found the space, we really relied on our wedding planner, Anne Kelley from Atrendy Wedding, for her thoughts as to how we could decorate (decorating does not come naturally!). We wanted the decor to be pretty simple, and I wanted it to reflect the spring season. We also kept our bridal party to just family members, so we did not have specific colors. We used cream colors, greys and green. Though we spent part of the day taking pictures in the rain, the clouds parted in time for our outdoor ceremony and everything came together beautifully!

Classic DC Art Museum Wedding

Or the National Museum of Women In the Arts, to be specific. It’s the unbelievable setting of this black, white and gold affair and thanks to Vicki Grafton the party is just getting started. From The Bride…Our story began, ironically, when Alfred’s friend approached me at a networking mixer. After learning that I went to undergrad in the city that Alfred was in town visiting from, his friend thought to introduce us. There was in instant connection between myself and Alfred and what followed was several years of long distance dating —I lived in Washington, DC and Alfred lived in North Carolina.

After weathering the storm of dating long distance, we really wanted our wedding to be special…to be the ultimate celebration of our love. We decided to keep our wedding party small so that we could focus on what was really important, becoming husband and wife!! I wasn’t the type of bride who had fantasized about what her wedding would be like so when it came time to plan all I knew was that I wanted the day to feel like us. I wanted a day that was beautiful and glamorous but still elegant and timeless. I didn’t have a theme for our wedding but I focused on a black/ivory/gold color palette because it embodied the understated beauty I envisioned for our day.

One of my favorite planning elements was our beautiful engraved wedding invitations. I put so much time into designing them and when it was finally time to mail them I was overwhelmed with all the other wedding planning. Alfred stepped in and helped me with everything from making envelope liners to picking out vintage stamps. It was quite the undertaking!! It was probably the only wedding task that we spent a large amount of time working on together and it transformed what could have been a tireless task into a treasured memory. Planning our ceremony was another special time in the planning process. I wanted to ensure every word spoken during the ceremony reflected the special bond that we share, so I wrote the entire ceremony which was officiated by my best friend from childhood. I labored over so many wedding decisions but this was one I never doubted for a minute. Surrounded by our family and friends, having my friend unite us in marriage, it was truly a magical experience.

After all the planning, the day really did go by in flash, I’m thankful for my family and friends that played a part and my wonderful vendors that helped bring my vision to life. Our wedding was a beautiful day, sometimes I close my eyes and mentally transport back to that day knowing the best part is that was just the beginning.

Georgetown Summer Day Wedding

With an al fresco affair, this bride was influenced by the natural beauty of Tudor Place grounds, and kept a color scheme of greens and neutrals. Adding to the organic feel, Ultra Violet Flowers designed simple, yet stunning arrangements. All together the wedding was light, airy and romantic; one that you know was just as beautiful to attend. Stop and swoon each shot by Sweet Tea Photography in the gallery right here.

Ted and I were set up by Ted’s mother and a friend of mine. We met for dinner at a restaurant on the Upper East Side right before the Christmas holidays. We were a little nervous, but we sensed something special in each other. A year after we met, Ted proposed over dinner at a restaurant on the Upper West Side.

I was looking for a casual elegant look. I wanted to combine my sense of elegance with Ted’s rustic sensibility. Green is my favorite color. Since the wedding was outdoors in a natural setting, I wanted the colors to correspond to the environment. My favorite detail was Ted’s pineapple boutonniere. I also loved the tree cookie gift prepared by Susan Gage. We were married under a tree and it was the theme of our wedding. I’d always admired Tudor Place ever since taking yoga classes on its grounds. I knew I wanted my wedding to be outdoors in an urban setting and Tudor Place fit the bill. It felt like home to us. The wedding was intimate and we were able to connect with everyone who traveled to be with us.

My favorite memory is walking down the lawn with my father during the ceremony and being surrounded by so many loving faces. And, of course, seeing Ted by the tree waiting for me! It was a truly moving feeling. My wedding truly exceeded our expectations. Everything went according to plan and even the weather cooperated. We couldn’t have been happier

My biggest challenge in planning the wedding was planning from New York, rather than locally in Washington, DC. My advice to future brides is to enjoy the process and don’t worry too much. Everything has a way of working out in the end.

From Matoli Keely Photography…Everything about this shoot, from the gold accented column dress, seaglass earrings, breathtaking florals, and coliseum like architecture of the monastery was just exquisite. As a photographer, location is extremely important, and most often the source of inspiration. From the moment I drove by the Franciscan Monastery in Washington DC, its architecture, sheer beauty, and the pure grandeur of this location in the middle of a metropolitan city such as DC, instantly caught me eye. Built in 1898 in the monastic style of the late Romanesque, this location was the perfect backdrop and inspiration for a Grecian styled shoot.

The beautiful model Rachel, droned a Mark & James “Rhodes Harbor Gown” by Badgley Mischka. The column structure of the dress, gold sequined insert and golden sash set the stage for the beauty of the shoot, which was accentuated by Kenneth Jay Lane gold leaf cuff bracelet and Alexis Bittar seaglass lattice teardrop earrings.

The hair and makeup artist Jordan Winn created long flowing soft curls with braids pinned perfectly in the back, creating a romantic textured look, full of body and movement, perfectly paired with a beautiful makeup look including a golden smokey eye and soft pink nude lip. Tying everything together were amazing florals by Violet Gardens Floral Designs, first with a gorgeous peach rose garden accented with wild flowers headpiece worthy of a goddess, and secondly a bouquet full of ambrosial charm with the perfect balance of white anemones and succulents!

Parisian Inspired Shoot in Washington DC

Every now and again I come across a shoot so pretty I want to crawl through the screen and live in it. Well, thanks to L Hewitt Photography just such a shoot is sitting pretty below. Beautifully planned by Wit Weddings with gorgeous florals from Mobtown Florals and stationery that stuns from Julie Song Ink, it goes without saying that I’ll be spending quite some time devouring this gallery today

From L Hewitt Photography...I have a GORGEOUS Paris/Washington styled shoot for you that I planned with Wit Weddings. The romance of Paris with the international sophistication of Washington. We’ve got the warm glow of candle light on mercury glass, peonies, lace, leather, and high culture. We’ve also got some BRILLIANT talent and vendors involved, including cake designer, Maggie Austin, BHLDN, and Julie Song Ink. On top of that, we’ve included a recipe for a delicious French cocktail to go with the post.

From  Wit Weddings…The shoot was inspired by the elegant and romantic architecture of Washington D.C., which was modeled after the city of Paris. The architecture, and corresponding location of the Washingtonian private residence for the wedding, is an enduring tribute to 18th century French style.

As Parisian food is often a special moment shared, we wanted a table that seated the couple elbow to elbow to create just the right romance.

As a wedding reception allows for close conversation shared amongst loved ones over food, we paid homage to one of the greatest pleasures of Paris – the street markets, filled with produce, cheeses, and baked goods. The white linen hemstitch runner layered below the formal embroidered overlay highlights the juxtaposition of countryside-simple French farm table and sophisticated wedding elegance.

To create Parisian sophistication fit for a Washingtonian wedding, we drew inspiration from French dress, accentuating the natural beauty of the residence with simple and elegant details. The table and fireplace mantel were dressed with that je ne sais quois of a Parisian woman – an allure meant to bring all attention to the couple. We accessorized with lace, hanging greenery, creamy florals, and the soft, inviting colors and the warmth of flickering candlelight.

The iconic pearls of Coco Chanel at 21 rue Cambon, Paris, were incorporated into the petite two-layered custom Maggie Austin cake and the bride’s jewelry. She also wore Chanel perfume and a French lace inspired gown. While tradition has it that the bride wear something blue, we decided the groom himself brings the bride good fortune. And so, he was appropriately dressed in a blue suit accentuated by handsome brown leather shoes.

Do-It-Yourself French Apéritif – “Kir”

This cocktail of crème de cassis and white wine was offered to international delegations visiting the region of Burgundy. The cocktail became so popular that it trickled down to cafés and the ordinary frenchman’s before-dinner drink, the apéritif.

Pour 1 teaspoon crème de cassis into a champagne flute. Top with chilled Sancerre white wine, or for special occasions, champagne. Garnish with blackberries or raspberries.

Surprise Washington DC Rooftop Proposal

There are romantic proposals, and then there is this little taste of awesomeness on a gorgeous rooftop in Washington DC.  Captured beautifully by Ashley Relvas Photography, it’s what happens when a crazy cool boyfriend proposes to his stunning girlfriend on a perfect night overlooking the Capital Building.  In other words?  It’s all sorts of amazing.  See every beautiful moment in the full gallery.

From Ashley Relvas Photography… This sweet soon-to-be groom, Tyler, emailed me not long ago to see if I was available for a “special shoot.” I was so excited when he explained that this “special shoot” was him proposing to his girlfriend in just a few days on the private rooftop terrace of Charlie Palmer Steak. Tyler planned out the perfect location for a beautiful Washington DC backdrop. I am so honored to have been there to witness and capture the joy and excitement between these two, during and just moments after he proposed. One of my favorite moments while taking pictures of them was when Heather (his soon-to-be bride) said something like, “gosh, I’m sorry I probably shouldn’t be smiling so much in all these photos but I can’t help it.” Actually, I think that is exactly what she should be doing.

Vintage Getting Ready Wedding Inspiration

Truth be told, I’m a sucker for the ‘getting ready’ shots. The sweet moments of anticipation, a graceful portrait of a bride in her dress and a flower girl’s expression of awe at the whole pretty process… it never fails to sweep me off my feet. So when Audra Wrisley sent over this vintage shoot focused on those peaceful ‘getting ready’ moments, I knew I’d be in for a treat. With gorgeous gowns from Kelsey Genna and heavenly florals from Petals & Promises, LLC, this gallery is packed full of lovely.

From Audra Wrisley Photography… I’m excited to share this ‘Getting Ready’ inspired shoot with you today. Featuring vintage lingerie and highlighting the soft, romantic ‘getting ready’ part of the wedding day, our shoot was set in the beautiful Loft 600 in Washington DC. The stunning Kelsey Genna gowns were the perfect culmination to the shoot, incorporating a beautiful mix of vintage styles and delicate details.

From Petals & PromisesThe color palette we chose to feature were the very feminine blush pinks as well as deeper hues using floral selections that can be found in the modern version of the Traditional Garden that often includes cutting gardens.

Floral Arranging & Rosé Tasting Party!

Hello SMP brides! It’s Caitlin here from Style Within Reach. Now that spring has finally arrived on the East Coast I can’t but help to be inspired by all things floral when it comes to wedding planning. I decided to have my wedding florist, Holly Chapple stop by the office for an afternoon of flower arranging…and what goes better with flowers than rosé? We had so much fun snacking, tasting and learning a thing or two from Holly. So what are you waiting for? Download your FREE tasting notes template and let’s get started!

I thought this idea of wine tasting and flower arranging would be fun for a bridal shower, bachelorette party or even bridal lunch before the big day. I teamed up with Lauren from A Fabulous Fete to create custom signage for our tasting which made all the difference. For favors we placed a few flower arranging supplies (floral tape, shears, fresh flowers) in little craft paper boxes (from Target!)

5 FLORAL ARRANGING TIPS FROM HOLLY CHAPPLE

[dotted]

One. Creating a grid with floral design tape across the top of the vase offers support and helps flowers to stay in place.

Two. Always use fresh product, work with a local grower or a specialty flower show to get your blooms. Grocery store flowers are often several days old and they are often not handled properly.

Three. To make a design that is unique, use lots of different textural elements. Formation of the blooms and foliages are key to this type of design.

Four. The easiest type of design to create is a design created with one type of flowers. Making a bouquet in the hand and then placing into the vase is often the easiest method.

Five. Use clean knives, scissors, and vases when you design.

[dotted]

The daffodil design was created by selecting two vases that fit inside of each other. The smallest vase was wrapped in moss and placed inside of the larger vase. This allows the moss to stay dry and bright green.

The daffodil bouquet was created by gently making the bouquet in the hand. Each daffodil was placed in a circular motion creating a spiral effect of the daffodils. As you are creating the bouquet you check your shape and height of the flowers you are adding to the bouquet. the stems are cut short and placed into the the center vase. Then, sit back and enjoy the pretty!

Washington DC Art Museum Wedding

When these high-school sweeties tied the knot, they knew they wanted something really special. A bi-cultural affair with nods to both their heritages set in a modern art museum that’ll leave your jaw dropped. Of course, the day couldn’t have come to life without Engaging Affairs and Abby Jiu on the job, and you can see the pretty-filled results right over here.

From the Bride… My husband and I met in high school so for us the wedding was “making it official” after feeling like a family for a long time. We wanted to celebrate that but also really wanted the day to be a celebration of our amazing friends and family who had seen us grow up together, as a couple and individually. Having the wedding feel like a big family dinner was the inspiration for a lot of the vibe of the wedding. We had long tables with low floral arrangements so everyone could talk, we had our brothers hold up the chuppah, we had cousins, nieces and nephews running around and Andrew’s childhood guitar teacher play guitar as I walked down the aisle.

We’re both from the Washington D.C. area but I am originally from Venezuela so we really wanted the event to be truly bi-cultural. The welcome bags were in Spanish and English, as were the programs, the flower girls signs and everything else we could think of! Our friends and families are also all about a dance party, so we brought a Venezuelan band – named Tartara – which kept people dancing all night.

The vision for the decoration was to have it feel elegant and intimate, with lots of eclectic and cool details. Our venue fit this perfectly. The Corcoran is such a classic DC venue, filled with marble columns and high ceilings, but also feels so young and modern because of the amazing modern art throughout the space. Because it’s such a special space we really wanted to highlight what was already really beautiful with our own touches.

The highlight of this effort was undoubtedly the chuppah. Having the wedding in a modern art gallery really inspired me to have a modern and nontraditional chuppah. I had seen different event decorations with paper flowers and had the idea of a chuppah made entirely of different kinds of white paper flowers. We also brought the concept into the dinner by adding it to the backs of our chairs during dinner. I can really say that walking down the aisle and seeing all of the people I love around me was amazing – and then looking up and seeing my soon-to-be husband under that chuppah was my favorite moment of the day.

Our vendors really helped me get the chic and eclectic look we wanted for the tables – we wanted it to feel clean and modern but also not feel like every table was the same. So, we had different types of white and gold plates throughout the tables, different table cloths, incorporated glass candlesticks, touches of gold, mercury glass and small candles. The final look throughout the long tables was incredible! Finally I added some other little details – gold table numbers, pom poms I found on Etsy for the dessert table, polka dot stirrers (also from Etsy), hot pink socks for the groomsmen (to match my beautiful raspberry bridesmaids), and raspberry colored Sofia champagne cans.

Abby, our photographer, and Sara, our wedding planner, were the ultimate partners. Beyond being amazing at what they do, and constantly in tune with our vision, they were sweet, supportive and thoughtful from day one. Abby and Sara – along with all of our other vendors – really helped to create a magical backdrop for an amazing and love-filled night.

Courageous Bride Proves Bald is Beautiful

We’ve had our share of lovely brides that have graced the pages of SMP, but perhaps none as fiercely beautiful and inspiring as this one. She’s reminded us that the true beauty behind a wedding is in the love and strength two people can give one another—not the dress, shoes, makeup or even hair can shine as bright. After being diagnosed with cancer nine months into planning her wedding, this sweet bride chose to stand strong, hair or no hair, and marry her handsome Marine. And with a little help from The Plumed Serpent, she donned her mother’s veil that was transformed into the most gorgeous head wrap we’ve ever seen. It’s love at it’s best m’dears and it’s all right here in this breathtaking gallery from Andrea Jacobson for The Observatory.

From the Bride… Our dream come true wedding was held at The Hotel Washington in the District on July 13, 2013. We had been planning our fairy tale wedding for nine months when Jeff and I got the heartbreaking news that I had been diagnosed with cancer. With just under four months until our wedding, I couldn’t imagine going through chemotherapy and also planning our wedding. My oncologist had told me I would have to postpone our wedding until I was healthy, however, I knew that was not a possibility. I needed to have something amazing to look forward to, and that is just what we did.

We had the most wonderful wedding vendors I could have ever wished for. They did absolutely everything in their power to make sure that our wedding day was everything we had ever dreamed of. I could not imagine going through our wedding without having them by our side. The amazing seamstresses and designers at The Plumed Serpent designed the most gorgeous head wrap for me to wear using my mother’s veil. I still felt like a beautiful bride even without any hair.

I was lucky enough to marry my Marine in his Dress Blue Alpha’s and he has been my side supporting me through this battle in beating cancer. He is an amazing husband, and I had my dream wedding come true.

Sweet and Simple Organic Washington, DC Museum Wedding

I love the simplicity of this wedding. It proves that simple doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice beauty, in fact, it might make it that much more pretty. It’s a wedding where the details that truly matter shine beautifully bright, and thanks to Sweet Tea Photography we can see every picture perfect moment here.

Museum

From the Bride…S & R were married on October 26th, 2013, in the gardens of the Textile Museum, which is located in the Kalorama neighborhood of Washington, DC. The Textile Museum was established in 1925, by George Hewitt Myers, a rug and textile collector and connoisseur. Myers collection began with 275 rugs and 60 related textiles from the traditions of non-Western cultures, which drew a wide range of visitors from all around the world. The museum hosts a wide range of family friendly events, exhibitions, and celebrations. This was the one of the last weddings being held on the property, before it was sold to a private donor. The Textile Museum is now in the process of moving it’s collections over to the George Washington University campus, scheduled to reopen in late 2014.

The bride and bridesmaids lounged in a suite at the Fairfax at Embassy Row Hotel, while they had their hair and make-up done. The bride wore a gorgeous vintage-looking gown that she found on gilt.com. Her golden Alice and Olivia wedges added a little flair to her traditional vintage look. The bridesmaids wore white to match the bride, creating a unique feel for their bridal party. The Groom and groomsmen got ready at their home in Georgetown.

Washington, DC local flourist, Sidra Forman, did the floral arrangements. She utilizes local products and ingredients that are produced in a sustainable environment. She focuses on finding the best available seasonal ingredients and presents them in a straightforward manner that lets the raw materials speak for themselves.

The bride’s bouquet featured a variety of delicate touches, including polo rose, free spirit rose, hydrangea, peach campanella rose, david austin Juliette rose, seeded eucalyptus, and white hydrangea. The groom’s boutonniere was made of white fressia.

The garden’s fountain, which tends to be a key decorative piece for events, was filled with cascading camellia, seeded eucalyptus, and white hydrangea. The “altar” area was draped with beautiful accents of Magnolia and white hydrangea. The officiant was an old friend from college, Nina, who was thrilled to share in the happy couple’s special moment. About 70 guests watched the couples share their vows and kiss.

The placement/escort cards were made by the bride. The dinner was catered by Windows Catering, who prides themselves on providing the freshest ingredients delivered from specialty food growers and purveyors around the country. During the cocktail hour Lobster rolls, Mediterranean Lamb Sliders, Duck Confit Empanadas, Mesquite-Grilled Tuna Brochette, Croque Monsieur, and the Squash and Apple Bisque were passed around as hors d’oeuvres. The dinner options were braised boneless kobe beef short ribs, harvest chicken roulade, shrimp tart, artichoke risotto, brussel sprout slaw, roasted vegetables, and autumn themed bread.

The dinner tables featured a lovely arrangement of the same florals that were in the bouquets with the addition of a la mode dahlias, white snapdragon and mini green hydrangea. The candy bar was decorated for Halloween, since Halloween was the week following the wedding. The candy bar offered rock candy sticks, chocolate covered pretzels, pearl white sixlets, chocolate almond bark, peppermint malted milk balls, chocolate covered peanuts, and chocolate pecan clusters. Guests were encouraged to use the provided small carriers to collect their favorite candies to take home.

The cake was made by Windows Catering, which showcased a cascade of peach campanella rose, seeded eucalyptus, david austin juliette rose and sahara rose. Keeping in line with the minimalistic and organic feel of the wedding day, Lisa Marie of Sweet Tea Photography used a variety of film cameras to capture their precious memories.

Rooftop Washington D.C. Bridal Shower

Bridal showers are arguably the BEST part of the wedding planning process. They’re gatherings of girlfriends, gifts, champagne (and if you’re extra lucky) stunning, modern design that looks just like this. Photographed by the fabulous Ashley Relvas, we’ll be swooning away in the gallery right here.

From Ashley Relvas Photography… The rooftop of The Hay Adams in Washington DC provided the most beautiful setting for this bridal shower (check out the stunning view). However, the love of friends and family is really what made it so special. This beautiful bride-to-be grew up in the Washington DC area but now lives in Hawaii and came home for a weekend to be showered by those who care about her most. The Hay Adams put together an amazing spread for the day and this group of ladies (and eventually the groom and father) had such a blast! I had such a wonderful time with these ladies and the bride’s sweet grandmother just melted my heart.
