A Beautiful Love Story of “In Sickness and In Health”

We love not only sharing our readers’ special days, but the stories behind them. And this beautiful bride, Katie? She’s a true hero. She said “I do” to her soulmate a bit earlier than expected while fighting Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma. Katie and Kyle toasted to their love with not one, but two celebrations, and Julie Jordan and Colleen Lavalle captured every beautiful moment. It’s with incredible sadness we share that Katie’s courageous battle has come to an end, but her and Kyle’s love will be a legacy always.

From the Bride’s Best Friend… I’m sharing this beautiful wedding on behalf of my best friend, Katie. Katie has come to the end of her 16 month long battle with cancer and I KNOW that if she were able, she would write this submission herself. Katie was diagnosed with Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma in July 2014. Her diagnosis was an uphill battle if ever there was one, but, thanks to her huge network of family, friends and #TeamKate supporters, and her amazing attitude, Katie lived each day to the fullest. While her journey has been a long and truly heart-breaking one, it was also one filled with tons of laughter and support, and her wedding day was no exception.

Katie and Kyle met each other in high school in Scranton, Pennsylvania. They first started out as close friends and then became more with time. They bonded over their shared love of Penn State University and the Yankees, Bruce Springsteen, pugs and their passion for family and friends. I think Katie knew that Kyle was “the one” the first time he made her laugh. She always said that no one makes her smile more than he did, and I know that he says the same thing about her. He was the man of her dreams, and she was the woman of his.

When it came down to planning their wedding, Katie wanted it to feel warm, intimate and natural, with a touch of their humor.

Katie officially married Kyle on a beautiful, sun filled day in August. Her wedding was originally scheduled for September 19, 2015, but, due to health complications, she decided to bump up the date of their wedding to a time when she knew that she would be feeling healthy. After getting ready at her most favorite place in the world, her family’s lake house – affectionately dubbed ‘Acorn Point’ – Katie made her way into the city in a classic car with her hero, her dad.

Surrounded by her immediate family and closest friends, Katie and Kyle married at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Located in the heart of Katie and Kyle’s hometown, St. Peter’s holds a special place in their hearts as it’s been the site of many weddings of their closest friends and family members. Their intimate reception was held at The Radisson Lackawanna Station, a historic train station built in 1908. The bride wore a beautiful Reem Acra wedding dress, complete with a cathedral style veil. The groom matched her in elegance in a classic black tux. The day was everything they ever dreamed of and more. It started with sunshine and ended with sparklers. We refer to this as wedding Part 1 because Part 2 was just around the corner!

With the invites for the original wedding date mailed weeks before, Katie and Kyle decided to move forward with her scheduled treatments and keep September 19th on the books for the full reception. Katie was feeling good, and she wanted to celebrate! The couple chose Glenmaura National Golf Club in Moosic, PA. The space was so them. Views of big open sky, greens as far as the eye can see and pure elegance.

Before heading to the reception, the bride and groom, complete with full bridal party, made a photo pit stop at PNC baseball field, home of the Yankees practice sessions and local Rail Riders team. The couple wore custom jerseys courtesy of the team, practiced pitching and swinging on the field, and watched the big screen for messages of congratulations from the players. It was a truly special moment that they will never forget.

Under a beautiful white tent overlooking the club’s grounds, Katie and Kyle danced their cares away. When guests weren’t dancing or posing at the photo booth with mustache and wig props, they enjoyed traditional American fare, a custom, three tiered ice cream cake from Manning Dairy Farm and a full candy bar complete with the couple’s all-time favorites – local chocolates from Gertrude Hawk, Swedish Fish and Sour Watermelons, to name a few.

The decor was natural and romantic, complete with light wood barn tables, pops of dark green, white and pink, and light blue. Towards of the end of the night, Katie changed into a white jumpsuit and channeled her inner Beyonce. Katie said it best, ‘They were the best days of my life.’

Weddings Part 1 and 2 couldn’t have been more perfect for a most deserving couple. On behalf of her family, friends, and supporters far and wide, we thank you, Kate, for leaving an everlasting impression on all of us. #TeamKate forever.

Elegant Fall Philadelphia Wedding

I favorited it, pinned it, I saved the URL, and just may just have sent it around to the other editors; this Lela Rose dress is my new favorite. And this beautiful Bride absolutely rocked the elegant, chic style for her fall Philly wedding. Alison Conklin snapped all the pics and I must say, the ones strolling through the old city streets have my heart. See these and more in our VAULT right this way!

From the Bride… Robert and I met while studying abroad in Florence, Italy in 2007 and have been madly in love ever since. Our years dating were spent between Syracuse, NY (where we attended college), Philadelphia where Robert had lived, and New York City where we now reside, but when it came time to choose a city to get married in we knew that Philadelphia had captured our hearts.

Pulling from the history and romance that seems abundant in Philadelphia, I wanted our wedding to really reflect how emotional and sentimental we are as people.

We did our first look pictures in Elfreth’s alley – one the country’s oldest residential streets, dating back to 1702; a street we had often visited while dating.

I was determined to get married in an outdoor setting so I chose the Morris House Hotel; we were married at the 1787-built house, in a cobblestone covered courtyard hidden from the street. The architecture alone was perfect for a setting but we covered the small gazebo and chairs in flowers to add to the romantic feel.

Friends have been a constant part of our relationship as we consider our friends our family and have all grown up together. A very close friend of both of ours, Jon, got ordained and gave us the most beautifully spoken ceremony we could have wished for. Our friends Christina and Dave also told stories of different points in our lives that were both memorable and pivotal in the relationship we have today. There was not a dry eye in the house when our ceremony was finished.

After the ceremony we continued to the Downtown Club – a gentlemen’s club in the 1920’s sitting atop a white marble building overlooking independence hall.

We continued the romantic and antique vibe here in a 1920’s ballroom with white washed architectural details, an abundance of food and champagne, and dancing late into the night.

Elegant Garden Engagement Session

It’s practically a no-brainer to have your engagement session at your local Botanic Gardens—the natural beauty of the flora is the perfect complement to your newly-engaged bliss. Add in some stunning fashion (how pretty is that pleated dress), Golden Hour lighting and geniuses like Alysia & Jayson Photography behind the camera for engagement photos you’ll cherish forever. See all the beauty in THE VAULT!

From Alysia & Jayson PhotographyWe met Meghan & Nathan, a beautiful couple inside and out, at the amazing Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania for their engagement session. It was a stunning evening and we enjoyed wandering around the incredible blooming landscapes together, talking and sharing stories! We even had the opportunity to capture this sweet duo on the pretty little white bench where Nathan proposed in the garden conservatory this past winter. We are thrilled to be documenting their amazing wedding next April at the Evergreen Museum and Library.

From The Bride…Years ago, I mentioned how romantic it would be to be proposed to surrounded by flowers. Nathan made that dream a reality by finding flowers in the middle of winter at this stunning garden location in Pennsylvania! We are getting married this April at Evergreen Museum and Library in Baltimore, MD. We fell in love with this venue because it blended our two styles perfectly. We are so excited and can’t wait to start this next chapter of our lives together.

Urban Pittsburgh Engagement Session

You know we’ve got a thing for urban engagement sessions, but when the Bride-to-be is one of our own, it’s all the more exciting. She works hard behind the scenes to keep this pretty blog ticking, so when we heard Abby Silverman and her other half, Tom were set to tie the knot, we knew their pics by Michaelwill Photography would be perfect. They took to the streets of Pittsburgh for a “city chic” engagement, and there’s lots more to see inside The Vault.

From the Bride-to-be... Tom and I really wanted our engagement session to feel like us – which meant something easy going and casual. We both live in New York City and wanted our backdrop to feel like we were on some tree-lined street in Brooklyn. While Pittsburgh (where we are getting married) is certainly not Brooklyn, we found the perfect compromise with the Mexican War Streets of Pittsburgh.

The beautiful row houses there have so much unique character and charm. With the help of our incredible photographer Michael Will, we found an absolute gem tucked away from the North Side (and away from tailgaters celebrating a big Steelers win). The light (and temperature) was perfect for a casual stroll around the city. The Pittsburgh skyline is a cannot miss and we happened to catch it right as the sun was setting. It was perfect!

Rustic Normandy Farm Wedding

Speaking from experience, when you find a venue you love, being flexible with your date comes easy. This beautiful duo went as far as to change their preferred season upon discovering their meant-to-be venue, Normandy Farm. Their spring fete captured by Lauren Fair Photography is the proof that a change of plans can lead to a whole lotta pretty. See more in THE VAULT!

From The Bride…JC and I met on a Penn State THON canning trip our senior year of college. JC alleges that it was love at first sight, which explains why he texted me every day and always offered to pick me up from class. It didn’t take long to realize that JC was truly one of a kind. We dated for two years after college before we moved to Los Angeles together and haven’t looked back since. JC popped the question exactly a year from the day we moved out to LA in an intimate setting along the coast of California in Palos Verdes.

We decided to have our wedding in Philadelphia since most of our loved ones lived on the east coast. It was really important for us to having everything under one room: hotel lodging, ceremony, reception and after-party. We settled on a rustic venue nearby my parent’s home in Blue Bell, PA – Normandy Farm. Given the popularity of the venue, they had none of our desired dates available so we decided to be flexible and have a spring wedding vs. a fall wedding. In the end, having a 2 year engagement proved to be invaluable, especially since we were planning a Philadelphia wedding from LA. We maximized all our east coast trips so that when we were in Philadelphia, we were able to accomplish a lot under a short time frame. A month before the wedding, Normandy Farm told us that the ceremony location was still under construction and we would either have to have an indoor ceremony or go to their sister-site around the corner. I immediately rejected both options and told them that we wanted to explore finding another spot on the grounds to serve as the ceremony location aka let’s get creative people! We ended up having the ceremony by one of their carriage houses, which was by far a much better location anyways – #winning. This spot was so beautiful, we would encourage anyone getting married at Normandy to consider this location for their ceremony.

Finding Lauren Fair Photography was one of my most memorable wedding moments. They are in my humblest opinions unrivaled in the business. Lauren and Tim were beyond helpful and through them, we were able to identity our DJ (Lovesick Inc.), hair/make-up artist (True Beauty Marks), and event stylist (Belovely Floral and Event Design). We truly had the best of the best in the area and all of whom made our wedding experience that much better. At first, many people tried to convince us not to hire an event stylist, but in my opinion, those little details are the most important part! Having an expert bring our vision to life was definitely one of the best decisions we made, especially because living in LA, I wasn’t able to do any DIY projects in addition to not having one artsy/crafty bone in my body. One of the best parts of our wedding was definitely the flowers and chuppah, which was all arranged by JC’s uncle. We never even had a trial with him as we knew no matter what he delivered, it was going to be perfect and sure enough, it was exactly what we dreamed it would be.

Deciding on the format of the ceremony was the biggest decision we had to make given that I’m Jewish and JC was raised Catholic. We wanted to respect our families and ensure that whichever path we took, both sets of parents would be 100% on-board. The truth is, JC and I are not religious and the idea of having both a Rabbi and Priest marry us didn’t feel right, especially because we don’t have any close relationships with a Rabbi and Priest. We wanted someone who truly knew us and our story to marry us. Through research, we discovered that Pennsylvania recognizes self-uniting marriages, which allows couples to get married without the presence of a third-party officiant. All that’s required are two witness signatures for the marriage certificate. We immediately knew this was what we wanted and decided to ask our closest and dearest friend to marry us. Having someone whose been a part of our story since day one marry us was one of the most meaningful moments of the wedding and definitely something we will cherish for the rest of our lives. During the ceremony, JC’s dad read a verse from the Bible and my dad read a verse from the Torah. This was actually our idea since we really wanted to represent both faiths. Being able to satisfy everyone’s needs was truly an amazing accomplishment.

My one piece of advice to brides is to not feel pressured to make your wedding look like someone else’s or what you’ve seen on Pinterest. It’s very easy to get caught up in wanting your wedding to look like something you’ve seen online, but the most important thing is staying true to yourself as well as your budget! When it came to our Save the Dates, I knew I wanted to do something that really represented our personalities in addition to doing something totally different than anything we’ve seen before. We decided to do an “awkward family photo” magnet which was a huge hit amongst our family and friends. Our goal was to bring a smile on our loved ones faces and we accomplished just that. Try to find similar ways you can challenge the status quo because those are the things people will truly remember most!

From Save The Date EventsNicole and Tyler wanted their wedding to have the feel of timeless elegance with a modern spin. The gorgeous grounds at Fox Chapel created a beautiful setting framed by large modern florals. Tall classic white florals adorned the tables with crisp modern grey linens and laser cut metal thank you notes at every place setting. The head table had a mix of romantic tall candles with low lush white florals to compliment a gorgeous sparkle runner. Nicole’s hair and makeup were naturally beautiful and allowed her gorgeous gown and shoes to be the star of the show. After dinner the guests moved to the ballroom where blue lights and modern white furniture transformed Fox Chapel into a modern club. From The Bride… Danny and I met and fell in love at Penn in West Philadelphia. Additionally, I grew up a few miles from the city of brotherly love, so when looking for the ideal geographic location for our wedding, we immediately knew Philadelphia was the city.

We wanted our wedding to be unique, modern and most importantly, fun. The Hamilton Garden at the Kimmel Center provided the perfect venue to have a unique and modern wedding in a very accessible urban location. Additionally, the iron-chef caterer for the venue owns multiple famous restaurants in Philadelphia, including two of my groom’s favorite restaurants.

Although we know Philadelphia fairly well, we live in New York so we hired Rebecca Richman to assist us with local vendors. She really helped us put it all together and it is amazing to have someone who has been planning with you the whole time also be there on the day of the wedding.

It was very significant to us to have our wedding photos on Penn Campus and MK Photography captured it beautifully. The LOVE sign on Penn’s campus served as a background of our photos and the design for our cake topper!

For the fun factor of our wedding we made sure there was a large dance floor and hired an exceptional band. Eddie Bruce and his band keep the party going the whole time and no one stopped dancing. During the last hour of dancing, we gave out personalized neon sunglasses, which allowed everyone to show off their goofy-side a little!

Everyone is going to have opinions and every wedding is different, but do not let others tastes or style influence you or your vision. Also, if you are planning from another city, hire a wedding planner in the city/town you are getting married in. It was extremely helpful to have someone local help plan. Additionally, talk to as many people you know who were recently married in that city, it will help you navigate how to choose vendors.

Our “perfect wedding” vision was unique, modern,  and fun (with lots of food, drinks, and dancing)! We tried to incorporate unique details such as our LOVE Cake topper (Symbolic of Philly and Penn), Floral/square table design (very modern to fit the space), personalized sunglasses for our guests!

Our first dance was to LOVE by Nat King Cole.

The most memorable moment for us was walking in as Mr. and Mrs. into a beautiful room of family and friends. And, after the dance party, we left in a memorable sparkler exit and drove around our favorite city to take it all in. It was so meaningful to come back to the city where we fell in love and create a beautiful new memory there.

Rustic

From The Bride…I envisioned our wedding to be a farm-style wedding with rustic and vintage elements, set out in the Pennsylvania farm country. I wanted it to be an intimate and relaxed day for our guests, where they would get to experience a day in our relationship. Erich and I are both creatives, I design a collection of printed goods called Toddy and Jude, and Erich is a craft brewer. Therefore, it was important to us to be able to personalize our wedding by having a little more freedom with choosing our vendors. One of the reasons we went with Lauxmont farms was because they allowed us that freedom. Also, the view of the Susquehanna river and the farmland from the top of the hill when you pull up to the Rotunda not only took our breath away, but reminded us of Sonoma, CA. We booked our venue right before we moved to California, and liked that we could share the feel of the place we were going to live with our family and friends.

The palette I focused on was a broad range of soft earthy tones. For my bridesmaids dresses, I had them wear a dusty rose color to sit back with the vintage theme. For the floral design, I chose wild flowers that are more subtle in color, such as lavender, and sage colored greens to pair with peach and blush toned flowers.

Since we moved to the west coast soon after we began planning, we ended up directing a lot of DIY projects, while our east coast friends and family executed them. A special shout out goes to my mother-in-law, a crafting genius. I gave her project after project, and she executed every one of them perfectly! She made the trellis Erich and I were married under out of vintage doors she had found years earlier. She also made us a moss covered frame that we put our guests’ table numbers on. I designed our invitations, and Erich and I screen printed each one in California. I also did the illustration for the menu header and the ‘thank you’ gifts. Erich, who is now the Brewmaster at Magnify Brewing Co in Fairfield, NJ, made all of the beer for the wedding. I also did all of the coordinating, and my bridesmaids helped decorate and style the tables the day of.

It’s hard to choose one moment. One of my favorite moments during our ceremony happened when we were exchanging our vows, and a flock of birds flew above us. It was like someone had released them at the perfect time, and of course Lindsay got the shot! My second favorite moment was when everyone came together and helped move our beautifully set farm tables inside due to some inclement weather. I feel like at most weddings people tend to stick within certain crowds, and this was the perfect way for people to work together and meet. Also, Erich’s best man who is a comedian in NYC, wrote an amazing speech that had everyone crying with laughter.
I wanted the flowers to be a mix of wildflowers to pair with our rustic farm theme. I chose white bouquets for my ladies to contrast with their dusty rose dresses. For my bouquet, I wanted a mix of soft blush colors, sage colored greens, and some lavender. Erich and his men wore lavender and rosemary, knotted with twine. Laura at Lauxmont did an amazing job of curating the flowers in vintage bottles for the tables, and I loved all of our bouquets.

I found my dress in a little shop called Bijou near my hometown of Havertown, PA. The dress had arrived in June (the day before I tried it on!) and was part of the fall 2014 line. I had gotten there just in the nick of time, because the lead time was 10 months, and I had a year left. I thought I was going to wear a more casual dress, but once I tried this dress on, I knew I had to have it. I felt like royalty, and I barely had to accessorize because it had a built in necklace around the collar and a lot of embellished hand work.

Erich and I are foodies. Cooking is our favorite past time by far, so the food served at the wedding was one of the most important things to us. Before we moved to San Francisco, we lived in Brooklyn, and met our caterer Ashley at a home brew event Erich was serving beer at. We chose Fat Beagle because they specialize in upscale Southern comfort food, and BBQ is one of our favorite things to eat. For our cake, we went with Wendi from Eat Sweet Treats. She made us a three tiered cake with both carrot cake and coconut cake tiers. For the cake, we wanted a rustic texture and a simple adornment of blush colored flowers, topped off with some miniature gold horses I spray painted gold.

For our favors, Erich wrote a recipe for a pork meat rub. His mom made the rub, and put them in little mason jars with my illustration on top that read, “This little piggy says thanks!”

Do what feels right for you and your fiancé. It is really challenging to please everyone, and at the end of they day, the people who attend your wedding will love whatever you pull together because they love you!

Mint + Gold Vintage Chic Wedding

When you can really, truly tell how grateful a bride is to have you at her wedding, well, it warms my heart more than any blooming bouquet or gorgeous gown. And this beyond beautiful Bride radiates that warmth, personalizing every menu card for every single guest. Michaelwill Photography captured every bit of this summer celebration and I’m left not only feeling inspired by their style but also jealous that I’m not one of this couple’s lucky friends and family. See more special touches right this way!

From the Bride… Choosing our mountaintop venue was an easy decision after we took a second look at our guest list and realized more than half the guests were flatlanders from Ohio. The Historic Summit Inn was the perfect location to have our romantic and soft, minty vintage garden wedding (as much as I tried not to have a theme, that is how I would put it into words!). My grandparents celebrated their wedding there almost 64 years ago to the day – and they were both very excited to recreate some memories with us that day.

My hometown in Uniontown, PA is at the foothill of the beginning ridges of the Appalachian Mountains. Our venue is right at the top and has the most breathtaking view of my little town. I was also so excited to have some of our photos taken at Kentuck Knob, just outside of one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous homes. One of my favorite memories of the day is walking up to the area with the view of mountains all around us and one of my bridesmaids breaking out into song, singing “The Hills are alive … with the sound of music…”

We mixed the ideas of vintage (our historic venue, my new dress resembling a dress from an earlier time period, my grandmother’s wedding rings, my dad’s favorite old cars), with a romantic and soft garden feel (our flowers, drink signs at the bar, farm tables as our head table and succulent trays) – I really tried to throw a unique wedding, unlike anything I had attended before. Our earthy yet classy color palette was spring pastels lead by the girls’ mint dresses and accented with gold. My mom owns an artificial flower shop in town and slaved over all the reception centerpieces and décor for months leading up to the wedding. She claims I was one of her toughest customers! We were so lucky to have found florist Lauren, from The Farmers Daughter who coordinated the stunning live bouquets to go with my mom’s designs.

While my mom worked on the florals, I was busy designing all of the paper products for the big day. I love graphic design and most definitely lost sleep about deciding which fonts would look best to brand our programs, invites, welcome boxes, map, escort cards and other wedding signage. One of my favorite wedding details was the name cards I personalized for all of the guests. Each guest found their seat by seeing their name on the menu card at their table—I wrote notes like “Love your dress, Mindi!” if she was a fashionista or “Hope you enjoy the wine selection, Tom,” if he was a wine lover. So many guests came up to me that night and couldn’t believe I took the time to do that and think of notes that would make each guest feel special. I loved hearing that – making each guest feel welcome and special was my goal! It was a long drive or flight for most of our guests to get to my hometown; they deserved it.

My other favorite detail was our cake topper. I work in journalism and have a love for paper. My husband really liked the traditional “people” cake topper so I was able to find an Etsy origami artist to create a customized paper cake topper of us. The details matching my dress and his suit and boutonniere were astounding – I will have them on display in our new house very soon!

Having an exciting drink menu (of course with fun drink signs) was another detail that was very important to us. I created a “Her Something Blue(berry)” Signature Drink and also had several specialty drinks, including a Mountain Mule (I was able to find a place to rent Moscow Mule mugs!). My husband is a craft beer fan, so we went beer tasting for months to find the perfect brewery’s selections to share with our guests. The winner? Erie Brewing Company! We also had my aunt and uncle’s local PA winery, Greendance, provide the wine.

I was so worried I’d cry through the vows or walking down the aisle (which I didn’t, only giant smiles) – nobody warned me about the crying that would take place during the first look with my dad or during the sweetest Best Man speech I’d ever heard! I just kept blinking to attempt to take mental photos and make memories I hope to never forget. Thank goodness I found Michael Will Photography to capture those moments in such an artsy way!

Classically Elegant Summer Wedding

I’ve only been married a little over two months and time has already flown by. I can’t imagine how quickly one year will go and I bet this adorable couple is feeling the same way as they get ready to ring in their first anniversary this weekend. But what better way to toast to good times than with Jeremy Hess’s photos and Lavon Film’s clip below! See their love story’s super sweet start right this way!

From the beautiful Bride… Family, tradition and love have always been what I hold most dear.

I remember spending Sundays sitting in the pews of our Moravian church, my feet barely touching the floor, daydreaming of my wedding at the church where I was baptized, and my family has worshipped and married for several generations. Many years later, that dream came true. Andrew and I were married on a beautiful summer day on Saturday, August 16th, 2014 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, my childhood home.

It was the beauty and architecture of the Lititz Moravian Church and the Lancaster Country Club that guided the theme for our wedding day; classic, traditional elegance with soft, angelic, and romantic colors and textures. Our ceremony would represent everything that was special to me growing up in this church; the warm congregation, the beautiful music, the timeless elegance of the chandeliers, the stain glass windows that beamed the shining light, and the genuine beauty of the historic sanctuary. Our black tie theme reflected the classic, stately beauty of the church’s architecture and grounds.

After the ceremony our guests would arrive at the historic Lancaster Country Club. The cocktail hour would be where our guests could mingle, enjoy cocktails and appetizers, while embracing the beautiful rolling green hills of Lancaster County, and soft orange evening light on a warm, beautiful summer night. Our reception would be where we all toss off our shoes and party with Don Eaton’s incredible ten-piece band, and enjoy a three course meal and dessert and coffee bar. We envisioned a night full of love and laughter with our closest family and friends.

The moment Andrew proposed I was determined to find my dream wedding gown which would encompass all of the things I wanted to feel on my wedding day; beautiful and elegant. I had my heart set on finding a gown with a long train and delicate, cathedral length veil. The classic beauty of both the church and country club inspired me to find a gown that was truly special. After browsing through countless bridal magazines and Pinterest to find inspiration for my gown, I found “The Dress,” which was called “Coco” and designed by Amsale. The dress was the perfect blend of feminine, sexy, elegant, classic and fun. We added custom lace cap sleeves to the gown, which was the perfect touch. I knew the second I tried the dress on that I loved it and would have the time of my life in this dress – and I surely did! Andrew wore a custom Alton Lane tuxedo and Allen Edmond shoes. My sister and Maid of Honor wore a lace Amsale bridesmaid gown in blush and Badgley Mischka heels.

Our wedding stationery was designed by Renee Connors of Designs by Renee. We were amazed by her incredible work. My love for simple elegance was the theme going into our save the dates, invitations, church programs, and menu cards – tied with an ivory or light pink bow, classic raised letter fonts and beautiful hand written calligraphy for each invitation.

Among the many details of planning a wedding I knew there was another element that was extremely important to us. I’ve loved and appreciated photography for many years, so of course for my wedding day it was a must to have incredible photography and videography. It was important for us to capture every moment; the first look, walking down the aisle, all the small details of the welcome bags, guest book, advice cards, signature cocktails, and the expressions on all of our faces throughout the night. Jeremy Hess from Jeremy Hess Photographers and Derek Lavon from Lavon Films were the teams we hired to work with us on our big day. I immediately fell in love with their creations which had an artistic and editorial approach. From the NYC engagement shoot, planning meetings and wedding week walk through’s at the venues, I was blown away by Jeremy & Derek’s professionalism, exceptional organizational skills, patience and natural ability to make us feel comfortable in front of the camera. They truly made our wedding planning and wedding day experience so memorable.

After ten incredible months of wedding planning our big day was here. We spent the wedding morning with our respective families getting pampered, sharing stories and reminiscing – over mimosas for the girls and Bloody Mary’s for the guys. Andrew and I planned to share our first look in private before the ceremony in the church garden. Every sort of emotion and nerve was felt but the second we locked eyes and held each other in our arms we were immediately calm and subdued and ready for show time! It was such a surreal and touching moment that I’ll never forget. Following my first look with Andrew prior to our ceremony, I had a “first look” with my dad where he saw me in my wedding dress for the first time. He looked so happy and proud. I’ll always remember that moment and how incredibly sweet and special it was.

For the beautiful ceremony Reverend Dean Jurgen officiated. Our mothers lit the Unity Candle to “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” by J.S. Bach, my sister entered to “Air” from Water Music by G.F Handel and my dad and I walked down the aisle to “Trumpet Voluntary” by J. Clarke. During our ceremony the congregation sang “Joyful, Joyful” and our soloist, Richard Jackson and organist, Dr. Jeffrey Gemmel sang, “The Lord’s Prayer” by A.H. Malotte. While Andrew and I lit our unity candle Richard sang, “Oh Perfect Love” by J. Barnby. These were all songs sung at my parents wedding thirty-four years ago, which was very special. Exchanging vows was such a sweet moment as we held hands and looked at each other with love while fighting back tears. Before we knew it we were being pronounced husband and wife with a loud cheering of applause. Following our ceremony our guests lingered on the front lawn as they enjoyed refreshments; homemade lemonade and water with frozen blueberries. Exiting the church we were greeted by our guests who tossed light pink rose petals into the air as Andrew and I were whisked off to the reception in a silver 1963 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud.

We continued the celebration at the Lancaster Country Club. The cocktail hour was al fresco (which I love). We had an open bar and also offered a champagne cocktail named, “The Kristini” made of champagne, pink lemonade and a lemon garnish. Passed hors d’oeuvres were served, the crowd-pleasers being the asiago stuffed potatoes, prosciutto, cantaloupe and honeydew kabobs, bacon wrapped scallops with sweet basil, and filo shells stuffed with crab. Live music was performed eloquently while the guest mingled while soaking in the warm summer evening breeze during our extended cocktail hour on the patio.

When we walked into our reception space our entire vision was executed flawlessly. Gold chiavari chairs and ivory linens adorned our tables topped with our menu which was tied beautifully with a satin light pink bow. Blush Damask linens draped over the sweetheart and dessert table creating a lovely contrast. Beautiful medium size vases and larger blooming arrangements done in a palette of ivory and blush, all soft, elegant and delicate flowers created a skyline of pale beauty that reflected the warmth of the votive candle light, and hinted at the panorama of the city we know and love. Stacia of Petals with Style incorporated ivory and light blush roses, hydrangea, garden roses and ranunculus. Our “Spread the Love” wedding favors of homemade strawberry jam, made and sold at the famous Lancaster County Farmers Market, accompanied each place setting. Each had a delicate lace placed over top with a satin light pink bow to continue with our theme.

Traditional recipes for pies and cakes are an important part of the German-Dutch culture of Lancaster County, and many recipes are passed down from generation to generation. Following the cake cutting ceremony our dessert bar and coffee station served Lancaster County traditional favorites such as miniature whoopie pies and shoofly pies, chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter icing, fresh fruit tarts, and key lime bites. Our beautiful wedding cake, by Byers Bakery, was a three tiered cake with white buttercream icing and white with raspberry filling. Touches of ivory and blush roses, ranunculus and porcelina spray roses were accented throughout.

The Don Eaton Band was certainly a highlight of our wedding day, with the dance floor packed until the second encore at the end of the night. The ten-piece band played the latest contemporary hits, my all-time favorite country songs, rock classics, and the hits from the 50’s to the 90’s. Each musician was very talented leaving our guests in awe of their range and level of perfection.

When it was time for the bridal party to be announced, our guests circled the dance floor as our parents and siblings came into the ballroom to the hit song, “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. With the crowd cheering, Andrew and I were announced and excitedly came in to “Signed, Sealed Delivered” by Stevie Wonder. It was quite an entrance with everyone on their feet clapping and singing. Immediately following our grand entrance we danced our first dance to Michael Buble’s, “Everything.” Our first dance was choreographed with lifts, dips and twirls which was a lot of fun and left our guests excited to see what fun dance move proceeded. The highlight was when Andrew lifted me in the air and spun me in a circle mid song with a romantic dip and kiss at the end. At this moment I remember feeling sheer happiness and hoping the night would never end.

In between the dancing, the toasts and greeting of our guests we were served several courses prepared by the LCC resident chef, and ate and drank the most delicious food and drinks. We spent time enjoying the company of our dearest family and friends.

The party was truly one to remember and one which could have lasted all night long! We could not have asked for more. All of our vendors did a wonderful job in helping us create the perfect day that reflected our story as a couple. Our wedding was warm, personal, and full of so many tender and loving moments. It was a day full of love, and it was better than we could have ever imagined. Our family and friends helped to make it an unforgettable day, which we’re ever so grateful for. I have no doubt that all of our guests felt the undying love between Andrew and I and how blissful and thankful we were to share this memorable day with them.

Rustic Chic DIY Outdoor Garden Wedding

Any celebration that features DIY details is sure to win our hearts, but add in a sentimental touch? Well, we’re all about that. From the ceremonial doorway created by the father of the Bride, to the punny doggy bag favors, every moment is handmade and heartfelt. Admist 16 acres of gorgeous greenery Bartlett Pair Photography snapped every detail to share, here!

From Bartlett Pair Photography… Tara and Matt, where do I start!? They love Disney, marathons, rescuing dogs and they made it all official at the Anthony Wayne House. As you’re about to see, they poured their hearts into every last detail of the wedding. We always tell our brides that the more personal touches you put into your day, the better. For example, when the father of the bride hand crafts a rustic chic doorway that opens up to the ceremony space, you’re off to a good start (the venue is even hoping to make it a permanent fixture to the space!). As the ceremony music commenced, Matt waited for Tara under a flower adorned pergola at the edge of the woods, where the sun leaked through the trees as we witnessed one of the most romantic ceremonies to date. It was a special moment, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t tear up once or twice as I glanced over at my own husband (that is until he body checked me to get a shot! haha just kidding Lincoln).

This was our first Anthony Wayne House wedding, but let me tell you that we will be back as often as possible. I mean this place blew us away! Amidst 16 acres of gorgeous greenery is the Georgian-style estate of Revolutionary War hero, General Anthony Wayne. The venue has seriously stepped up their game this year by upgrading every last aspect of the space, including a brand new tented pavilion filled with chic touches like floating/glowing mason jars. Oh and let’s not forget the to-die-for farm tables that were assembled from recycled barn wood. Keeping with the local theme, the exclusive caterer, Jeffrey Miller Catering, sources ingredients from local farms (and let me tell you, we’ve been talking about the food ever since!). We can honestly say that an Anthony Wayne House wedding is a serious contender for best outdoor garden themed wedding in the Philadelphia area.

One of our favorite parts of the night was the toasts. Let me preface by saying we’ve seen hundreds of toasts, and know how difficult it can be to entertain 100+ guests while simultaneously conveying a touching message. Jon and Lauren (Tara’s sister) knocked it out of the park, especially when Jon wove together hashtag themed advice for the groom (who works with the Silicon Valley crowd), including the importance of #yesdear. (Now if only Lincoln could learn the same!)

At the very end of the day, Lincoln and I almost always try to pull off a creative night portrait. Tara and Matt had mentioned that they wanted a picture with the string lights around the fire pit, so we dreamed up what would be a pretty technically challenging shot. We had to relocate some guests and only had about 2 minutes to pull it off, but what we captured is one of our favorite portraits to date.

Anne of Green Gables Inspired Baby Shower

Kristy Rice, the huge talent behind Momental Designs, set out to shower her childhood friend with a day crafted around their shared love of the Anne of Green Gable series. From book favors with hand-painted covers to the narrative of Anne beautifully woven into each and every detail (including a fab cake table), this is a stunning modern spin on a childhood classic all captured by Danielle Coons.

A few highlights:

  •  A modern twist on Anne of Green Gables at Terrain in Philadelphia
  • Individually hand painted stationery throughout including artfully redesigned book covers for guest gifting and custom laser cut invitation details
  • All elements of the decor tied directly to narrative from the Anne of Green Gables Book
  • Three cakes with artwork installation inspired by passages from the book

Kristy and Amy have been best friends since grade school and to this day they share a love for the Anne of Green Gables series by LM Montgomery. When it came time to vision a baby shower for Amy, Kristy knew exactly where to turn. Every element of decor and stationery was inspired by specific scenes from the tale of Anne, a precocious red-head orphan in the 1800’s. Kristy set out to give the look a decidedly modern spin amidst the flowery language of Montgomery’s narrative.

Invitations were meant to be a gift for each guest and included a set of four art prints bundled together with the signature Momental Lacy laser cut bellyband. The invitation itself was hand brushed with blush and sage inks atop a pebble textured, blush cardstock.

Menus were mounted to mini chalkboards and if any of you know the Anne story, you’ll certainly know the significance of the chalkboard!

Guests went home with there very own copy of the book, refashioned with a watercolor floral cover hand painted with thickly applied brushstrokes in white.

The flower installation was inspired by a scene from the movie adaptation of Anne of Green Gables where two of the central characters take a buggy ride through a dogwood laden lane of shimmering white blooms. Papertini Floral suspended clouds of baby’s breath and other blooms above each guest table.

A series of three cakes each created after a humorous passage in the Anne of Green Gables book. Plum Cardamom, Raspberry Cream and a Classic Carrot were divine. Large 5 foot tall art prints hung behind each cake.

Classic + Romantic Golf Club Wedding

The classic vibe of the black and white tile flooring of Fox Chapel Golf Club, the elegant yet subtly sexy wedding dress (a Matthew Christopher creation) and the bouquet of white and cream roses… it all added up to one chic celebration captured by Elizabeth Anne Studios for us to devour. And devour we will, because classic-meets-stylish weddings might just be my jam. See it all right this way!

[iframe http://www.youtube.com/embed/8R_SpPgqHRc 600 338]

From the Bride… I feel like I should start by saying that I’m not that girl who’s been planning my wedding since I was, like, eight years old. I always knew I wanted to get married, but as far as when and where and what my dress would look like? Never crossed my mind. So when Hutch proposed to me last August, the rush of panic came almost instantly. His only request was that the wedding be a “kick a** party.” What a guy thing to say. And not helpful whatsoever. There were so many decisions to be made. And for a person as indecisive as I am, this was sure to be a long and painful process.

That panicked feeling started to subside once we figured out that it only made sense for me to get married in my hometown of Pittsburgh. I’m a Pittsburgh girl through and through, and though I haven’t lived there since high school, it’s the only place that has ever felt like home to me. My mom and I started researching locations and we both absolutely fell in love with Fox Chapel Golf Club. The idea of getting married in a country club setting never appealed to me, but there was something different about Fox Chapel. The black and white tile in the foyer, the terrace overlooking the dining room, and of course the view. What a view!

The feel of the club went perfectly with my idea for a romantic, classic wedding. We looked at so many different color combinations, but I kept coming back to the pale pinks and golds. I knew I would never look back at photos and say what was I thinking? It was simple, yet elegant and memorable, and so “me.” Although I’m sure my bridesmaids wanted to kill me for putting them in such a pale color (Dessy ‘cameo’ from Nordstrom), I thought they all looked gorgeous.

Now for the dress. My mom is my best friend, and she also happens to be a personal stylist who is very opinionated. She was in Pittsburgh and I was living in South Carolina, and there was no chance that I could be trusted to pick the dress on my own. So I booked a flight to Pittsburgh and we made it our mission to find THE dress by the end of the weekend. I wanted something that was classic, yet had a little sex appeal. I know that’s a strange thing for a bride to say, but it made sense in my head. I wanted my husband to see me walking down the aisle and think “wow my wife looks good,” instead of “wow that’s a whole lot of fabric.” I think I accomplished that with the Matthew Christopher Sofia. It hugged me in all the right places, not to mention the built-in corset, which was a Godsend for someone who is self conscious about her waistline.

The flowers were honestly a complete surprise to me. By the time we got to that point, I had made so many decisions that I simply couldn’t find the energy to make one more. I told my mom and the ladies at My Garden Floral that I wanted to keep with the simple, romantic feel and to avoid bright colors. They did a fabulous job. And being surprised on the big day was actually really sweet and special. It made it even more memorable.

I wanted to brand the wedding with something special that would tie everything together, from the invitations to the menus and favors. My little sister is a graphic designer, which was absolutely amazing throughout this whole process. I wanted a logo that stayed true to that classic, elegant theme, and she hit the nail on the head with her design. The wreath with our initials was exactly what I was looking for. And she was so patient with me, even when I changed my mind about 500 times.

Among my favorite details were the welcome bags. I wanted to welcome our guests to Pittsburgh with a personal touch. I’m a popcorn aficionado, so when someone told me about Pittsburgh Popcorn, I knew it was love. I bought brown bags and put a logo sticker on each one. I stuffed each bag with two personalized water bottles, a bag of Pittsburgh Popcorn, and an itinerary for the weekend. It was simple and thoughtful, and helped add to the excitement of the weekend.

Another DIY project was the wedding favors. I would say this was the most time consuming part of the planning process. I bought three cases of mini champagne bottles. We hand stamped small circular labels and tied them to the bottles with ribbon and gold and white striped straws. They turned out really cute, and it was worth the possible arthritis I incurred from all the stamping and tying.

I’d have to say my absolute favorite detail from the whole day was the entertainment. The Jason Kendall Band was a huge hit. They played some great cover songs, and per my request, steered clear of any cheesy wedding tunes. You know the ones (think Cupid Shuffle). We also hired The Slow Motion Booth at the last minute, and what a genius decision it was. It was such a fun little attraction, and gave people something to do besides drink, which is always a plus. It was perfect for both kids and adults. I can’t even tell you how many of our guests have contacted me just to say how much they loved the slo mo booth.

Overall, the entire wedding day was beautiful and perfectly executed, with only a few bumps along the way. The details were special and uniquely “us.” Most importantly Hutch and I started our new life together surrounded by so much love. Not to mention, I think I delivered the “kick a** party” he had in mind.

French Country-Inspired Summer Wedding

With bouquets of white and blush peonies, this beautiful Bride and her super chic bridesmaids looked more like a scene from a French flick than a wedding party in Pennsylvania. Thanks to La Petite Fleur, the talented design team behind this summer celebration, guests enjoyed this French-country soiree from beginning to end, finishing the night with a gorge cake from Bredenbeck’s Bakery, captured in its entirety by Sweet Pea Photographymore this way!

From La Petite Fleur… With love, timing is everything! Six years ago, at just the same moment, Diane and Rick passed through a hallway at work and met for the first time.

And for quite some time, Diane had envisioned a French Country-inspired wedding – brimming with not just details, but handcrafted touches as well, so she and Rick partnered with La Petite Fleur, Weddings & Events, to style their big day at North Hills Country Club in Glenside, PA.

Beginning with the bride’s sweet, yet chic, palette of pink, white and black, LPF created a décor plan that highlighted the couple’s handcrafted details while exuding an elegant charm.

Diane carried a simply-exquisite bouquet of white and light pink peonies finished with artemisia and ivory satin-wrapped stems. Then, clad in classic black cocktail dresses, the bridesmaids carried bouquets of pink peonies finished with artemisia and pink satin-wrapped stems – for a pretty pop! And for a classic touch, Rick and the groomsmen sported dapper palette-coordinating pocket squares.

Well-wishers were welcomed to the late afternoon reception at North Hills Country Club by a guest book, which was hand-illustrated by the father-of-the-bride. Guests then picked pink fleur de lis escort cards – Diane originals – from the “family tree” built by her father Michael Trinsey.

The father-of-the-bride also designed the couple’s save-the-dates, invitations and ceremony programs in the ink and pen style he’s been using to custom-design the family’s annual Christmas card since he married Diane’s mother.

With its floor-to-ceiling windows, French doors, solarium, and terrace, North Hills’ offered an innate alfresco feel for this ‘French Country Club’ affair. So naturally, tables were dressed in crisp, white linens and monogrammed burlap table runners – fashioned by the bride herself.

La Petite Fleur designed two tablescape styles for the well-dressed tables. Some featured an eclectic collection of vessels, including a white glazed ceramic jug filled with ‘oh-so-French- Country’ lavender; an ornate opal cup brimming with white hydrangea; and a duo of garden vases filled with petite pink roses and artemisia, as well as white ranunculus and wax flower.

Also boasting classic charm, the second tablescape style featured a tall, silver-trimmed lantern finished at the top with sprigs of lavender and blush ribbon. Cozy at the base of the lantern were clusters of white hydrangea, petite pink roses, with a touch of lavender, seeded eucalyptus and artemisia.

Each table also featured a reclaimed wood sign (hand-selected by the father/daughter design duo), that Diane white-washed and hand-painted with table numbers spelled-out in French, of course! Then, cobalt blue wine bottle favors, with custom labels courtesy of their brother-in-law, finished the tablescapes with a ‘twist’ of color!

Candle-filled lanterns, with palette-coordinating roses and specialty greens, also made an appearance on the cocktail tables in the solarium and on the terrace.

And as guests danced the night away, bulb lights – strung café style – over the dance floor and the collections of candles perpetuated the sweet, romantic atmosphere the couple was aspiring to achieve.

Even the desserts were trés cute at this ‘French Country Club’ wedding. Diane and Rick offered guests an array of temptations -from traditional wedding cake, which LPF topped with ruffled-edged peonies, and an assortment of mini pies, to a French wedding cake known as a croquembouche, which LPF finished with none other than lavender sprigs.

From the Bride… That day, I planned to spend time with my friend Brittany at Sand Castle Winery, and Rick asked me to be home by five that evening so we could go to his father’s “retirement party.” When I got home, I walked upstairs and he was down on one knee asking me to marry him! Then he drove me into the city where he planned a surprise party (not a retirement party) with both of our families to celebrate our magical night.

I wanted a French Country wedding with classic touches that would never go out of style. La Petite Fleur, Weddings & Events, helped me complete this look with timeless pink peony bouquets, café lights above the dance floor, and beautiful tablescapes with white and pink blooms. Our wedding’s style was everything I imagined and more!

My father has been designing our Christmas cards since my parents were first married. And I had always wanted him to design my wedding invitation with that same pen and ink style. He designed our save-the-dates, invitations, guest book, ceremony program and escort card tree.

Rick and I were married at the church in which he had received his sacraments. And our officiant was Monsignor Ken McAteer, who baptized me and officiated my parents’ wedding. The ceremony was a true blend of both our traditions and a really special moment for us.

Classically Romantic Bridal Inspiration in Old Town Philadelphia

I’ve been obsessed with BHLDN’s dresses since first sight, and if you throw some vibrant florals into the mix courtesy of Primrose and Company, I’m one very happy camper. This bouquet bursting with pretty pinks has me pondering which pic to print first and Julie Paisley’s photos in Old Town Philly have me dreaming of old world romance. All in all, this shoot is not to be missed; it’s just that good.

From Julie PaisleyClassic and elegant describes this bridal inspiration look. I chose the blush wedding dress from BHLDN to match the tones and texture in the buildings of Old Town, Philadelphia. Primrose and Company designed a bouquet with a pop of color to accentuate the texture in the buildings even more. I didn’t want to go all pastel and I love the richness in the florals. We wanted to keep the classic and Old World feel so we choose a simple hair adornment and hairstyle with a little vintage flare. Add in a black suit and bowtie for our groom and we have a completed look. A little something different, vintage but modern at the same time.

Peony-Filled Romantic Pittsburgh Wedding

So how do you make a wedding for 250 people feel really, really special? Just ask this couple! “If the budget allows, have a ‘must have’ list. For us, we wanted a great band, particular flowers and we wanted to be able to invite as many friends and family as the venue would hold! For us, those factors mattered the most so we were able to eliminate costs elsewhere to make sure these ‘must haves’ were able to happen.” And photographs from the ridiculously talented Mary Dougherty don’t hurt either! More here!

From the Bride…By the time I was 8 years old, I knew exactly the wedding I wanted. Most girls dream of their wedding day at an early age, but as time goes on, their ideas change and by the time it comes time to plan the big day, they are practically at square one! But not for me, my dream wedding did not change one bit and by the time I got engaged, my vision was exactly the same as it had been when I was 8 years old. And, luckily for me, my amazing fiancé was equally on board with all of my ideas.

Planning a Pittsburgh wedding while living in Boston seemed daunting at first, but with careful planning and a solid timeline (and email and cell phones) it turned out to be relatively stress-free. I already knew the exact venue, time of year, and the band I wanted. Another major element to any wedding is the photographer. Every bride wants to make sure they can find someone they trust, also get along with and a photographer whose past work you truly love. For me, this person was Mary Dougherty. It was actually a no brainer as Mary had photographed my sister’s wedding in November 2012 and the photographs were phenomenal! After that, the rest just seemed to fall into place. Between the florist, the cake bakery, transportation, and church, everything just came together!

When the big day arrived, we couldn’t have been more excited. The clouds cleared out and it was perfect June day. We always knew we were going to have a big wedding; there are over 40 aunts, uncles and cousins on the groom’s side alone! Between family friends, high school friends, college friends, coworkers, new friends and family, our guest list topped out at 250. If the groom had his way, that number would be up to 300 people! It was very important to us to have as many of our friends and family there to celebrate as possible. From the flowers, the speeches, the food, the band, and of course, to our amazing guests, our wedding was above and beyond anything we could have imagined. I think the highlight of the night was the spectacular fireworks show that went off during the bands break. It was truly a magical evening.

If I could offer any advice to future brides, it would be to follow your heart and plan the wedding your way. Everyone is going to have opinions and every wedding is different, but do not let others tastes or style influence your vision. Also, if the budget allows, have a “must have” list. For us it was we wanted a great band, particular flowers and we wanted to be able to invite as many friends and family as the venue would hold! For us, those factors mattered the most so we were able to eliminate costs elsewhere to make sure these “must haves” were able to happen. And lastly, have as much fun as you can during the planning process, and take a deep breathe, because your wedding day will be here before you know it!
