The Art of Hand Lettering

Kathryn McCrary knows a lot of talented ladies; from the painters to the crafters of beautiful hand lettering (ahem Ashley Buzzy we’re talking about you). It might be an Atlanta thing or a creative people flock together thing. But, whatever the case, we love to catch a glimpse of these talents at work. Have a look at Ashley’s Lettering Workshop and stay tuned for a tutorial + awesome giveaway up next.

From Ashley… I started teaching workshops in the summer of 2014. It really came to me by request: a lot of my current clients were interested in what I did and curious to see if they could do it too. I knew I wasn’t the best calligrapher in the world, so I made sure that it was a class for beginners: basics that I knew I could teach. I held my first class at my studio with a few flower arrangements I made myself and a high priority on making sure everyone had a mimosa. My thought process was that calligraphy is harder and more frustrating than anyone expects, and I wanted the students to have fun, take in some beauty and enjoy themselves while they worked.

What I didn’t know is what teaching would spark inside of me. I realized that teaching calligraphy made everything in my own heart and mind click into place. I learned how to explain what I did, which made me realize different ways that I could be doing it better. It made me eager to seek more information so that I could give those students as much knowledge as possible. It cut through the fog of competition and comparison that so many artists struggle with. I wasn’t working against these people, I was coming alongside them. Their victories had something to do with me. I helped! I’ll never forget the first time that feeling washed over me – from that point onward I realized: I am a teacher.

Coming from a weddings and events background, I am also a hostess. I thought if I subjected my students to six hours of calligraphy drills, I wanted to treat them with surprises in their supply kits, amazing food at lunch, fresh cinnamon-covered doughnuts, the good coffee, and yes – more champagne. From that, traditions were born! My assistant and I have now hosted ten workshops to date, and we always eat, pop some bubbly, and get to know the people who learn with us. This experience has introduced me to some of the most beautifully creative people, it’s motivated me to travel to meet them and it’s improved and inspired my work like nothing else has. It motivated us to move into a beautiful new space in Atlanta where we could have people over for pour-over coffee and some good old shop-talk. I sincerely can’t wait to meet the people who take our classes this year – the adventure awaits!

Rustic Meets Romantic Vineyard Wedding

When it comes to weddings that completely wow, this wedding has IT.  Think seriously stunning details from the talents at Kristeen LaBrot Events (they’re brilliant) meets a super cute duo (Taylor Swift first date, anyone?) meets a breathtaking rustic setting.  Add in some yummy cuisine from Contemporary Catering and it’s soooo worthy of your entire Friday.  See it captured by William Innes right here.

From the Bride… Kyle and I were neighbors our sophomore year of college at Loyola Marymount University. But we really didn’t know each other at all until one night we were hanging out in my apartment with our friends, and I saw that there was a Taylor Swift concert the following night. I was such a big fan, and yelled out asking if anyone wanted to go. Kyle raised his hand enthusiastically, but no one else did. I was nervous because I didn’t know Kyle at all, and thought more people would be on board. We ended up drunkenly buying the tickets that night, and going to the concert the next night, both nervous and unsure of each other. On the car ride to the Staples Center, we were talking nonstop and missed the beginning of the concert because we were so unaware of the time as we talked. From then on, we were really good friends, and over the next six months, started falling in love.

Right when we drove onto the Triunfo Creek Vineyards property, we knew we had found our venue. Kyle is from Washington state, and I am from Minnesota, so we were very clear that we wanted our wedding to look and feel like where we both grew up, and Triunfo just felt like home. We loved the farm house, as the inside reminded us a lot of the cabins we grew up going to, and we also loved how spacious the lawn was, which is an unusual find in the Los Angeles area.

The inspiration behind our style was summers in Minnesota and Seattle – a time where you are outside with your family and friends, enjoying fresh homemade food and drinks, playing outside, but most of all, feeling relaxed and at home. Kyle and I love the outdoors, and nature, so we wanted the vibe and style to feel rustic, and also simple yet elegant. We also wanted people to feel at home, and be able to less loose, but feel laid back at the same time. Having the yard games – like a bean bag toss and beer pong – helped to bring that vibe, as did the soft colors of blush and champagne mixed in through the wedding day.

I loved that on each of the bean toss boards, we had the state lines of Minnesota and Washington screen printed on. I also carried my Grandma’s small white bible, that both she and my aunt carried down the aisle on their wedding day. It was very special to have that in my hands as I walked down the aisle to Kyle – it helped me to feel grounded and supported by my family.

A woman that I very much look up to, told me that at least once during the worldwind of the day, stop, be quiet, and take a moment to take in every detail. I did this right after dinner as we were about to begin greeting tables, and I will never forget it. I stood holding Kyle’s hand, surveyed the crowd under the twinkling lights, right as the sun was going down, and the sky was this gorgeous indescribable blue, and I saw family friends who had flown in from China, my whole family and friends from Minnesota, all of Kyle’s high school friends from Seattle, my sorority sisters and his fraternity brothers – every person in the world who we love were all there for us, and also having so much fun, and it was just an amazing and overwhelming feeling of being loved and filled with happiness.

I have a few favorite wedding pictures, but one of them is a shot from the back of Kyle and I sitting with my maid of honor and his best man – they were fist bumping and we were holding hands. I also love the picture of Kyle kissing my forehead, where we are framed by the tree branch overhead. I think the lighting looks magical in that one. Another favorite was of the whole wedding party candidly walking toward the camera.

Don’t stress, it will all come together just right! Also, get a wedding planner if you don’t want to cry.

Winter Victorian Romance Wedding Inspiration

A beautiful lace-lined gown in the perfect hue from Modern Trousseau, breathtaking florals from Eclectic Sage and the gorgeous Magnolia Plantation & Gardens setting the scene – it’s easy to see why we are head over heels for this South Carolina stunner of a shoot from Dana Cubbage Weddings. It will leave your head spinning with inspiration, so settle in and get ready for some serious pretty here

From Dana Cubbage WeddingsCenturies old oak trees draped in romantic Spanish Moss provided the perfect backdrop for this winter styled shoot. In a quiet corner of Magnolia Plantation in Charleston SC, Amy Long of The Lovely Find crafted a beautiful Victorian-inspired set, complete with vintage silver flatware + mismatched grey + white china that really set the tone for this silver, blush + cranberry shoot. Simplicity in the details really allowed the bride’s gown to shine. The bride wore two gowns for this shoot – the first being Modern Trousseau’s Honor, part of the Fall 2015 collection. This dress features a French lace bodice and a dramatic pleated skirt with a playful high/low hemline and elongated train. This dress, paired with a romantic floral crown by Eclectic Sage, would be the perfect choice for a romantic ceremony under the oaks. Her second gown was Modern Trousseau’s Storm, another gown from the Fall 2015 collection. This gown features gorgeous French Alencon lace, a strapless bodice and asymmetrical lace + tulle skirt – the perfect gown for this moody Victorian shoot! We envision this as her “party” dress – something she changes into after a quiet + intimate ceremony with her groom.

Bridesmaids wore gorgeous blush Monique Lhuillier dresses from Rent The Runway and hair pieces from Percy Handmade. Carrie McLeod, owner of Paper Dolls, did a fabulous job with hair + makeup, while Ines Aranguren of Sky’s The Limit Custom Cakes created an absolutely STUNNING silver cake, inspired by the vintage silver flatware on the table. Heather of Eclectic Sage created gorgeous bouquets + centerpieces for the shoot – I absolutely LOVE the bride’s asymmetrical bouquet that mimicked her gown’s asymmetrical skirt. I thought that was brilliant! Also, Heather created a floral pocket square – a super cool alternative to the boutonniere that I’ve never seen before and thought it was really awesome!! Amy + Heather utilized some of the native Spanish Moss to drape the bride + groom’s chairs at the table – a fun touch and a nod to the Southern locale.

Meet SMP Blogger Bride Cambria Grace!

You might recognize Cambria Grace from her ever-popular Instagram feed, but today she’s stepping behind the SMP desk as our newest Blogger Bride-to-be. She’ll be sharing her wedding planning journey – the good, the bad, and the oh-so-pretty – and we’re kicking things off with her stunning engagement. Scroll on to get to know Cambria a wee bit better, and don’t miss the mountaintop gallery from Dylan and Sara.

From The Bride… My fiancé, Ross and I met the first day of our freshman year at Bates College. He won me over with his sense of humor and chutzpah, which lent itself to much witty banter over meals in the dining hall. It didn’t take long for me to realize he is one of a kind, and someone that I wanted to spend endless amounts of time with. Seven years later he asked me to marry him on a family trip to California.

Ross has always known how much I love spending time with my parents. We are a very tight little unit. Last spring, when we were all on vacation, he turned to my parents and asked for their permission to ask me to marry him. They of course said YES! I, still unknowing and utterly oblivious that he was proposing thought it was so sweet of him to involve me in his ‘asking for my hand’. He then turned to me, pulled out my Aunt Grace’s wedding ring, and said ‘want to get old with me’? I am never surprised, but he totally got me. I burst into tears and the rest of the memory is pretty much a black-out –  but I DO know that it was by far the happiest, most wonderful moment of my life.

Ross is the co-founder of Downeast Cider House, and I am a wedding and lifestyle photographer here in Boston. We live and work in Charlestown. Thus, we decided to get married here! We chose a pier in the navy yard, with a view of the city that we love. Keeping the wedding ‘us’ is pretty important and has been a big factor in the planning process. Being in the industry certainly gives me a different perspective on wedding planning, which I’ll be sharing about as a blogger bride here on SMP.

Style Me Pretty has been a part of my career and life for several years now. My first inspiration shoot was with Lauren WellsPollen Floral Design and Kacie Corbelle Makeup Artistry. We worked so hard, had an awesome time together, and were featured on SMP. It was my first time getting published, so I immediately called Ross and shrieked into the phone. Luckily, I still have Lauren, Krissy and Kacie on my side for the wedding day as vendors and friends. Lauren is even taking on matron-of-honor duties, as well as styling the entire event. The impressive creative community in Boston has certainly become a big part of my life, personally and professionally, and I’m excited to see and share my wedding planning adventures with you!

Romantic Ranch Wedding

I just moved to Oregon (yay!) and apparently there are little spots of rustic goodness I didn’t even know existed.  Like Brasada Ranch, a central Oregon charmer perfect for a romantic, love-filled affair.  Think pastel hues, DIY details (hello gorgeous florals + cake) and Jenny Yoo bridesmaid frocks that are all sorts of beautiful.  See it all captured stunningly by Marina Koslow right here.

Rustic

From Marina Koslow Photography… Lotos and Kevin married on a beautiful sun-filled summer day at Brasada Ranch, a true hideaway spot in Central Oregon. Their event was a mix of classy and romantic details with many DIY elements – flowers were done by the one of the bridesmaids and could not have complemented the girls’ dresses better. The cake that was made by a bride’s friend was a passion fruit ice cream and chocolate chiffon flavor and looked absolutely stunning. The cute place cards and seating map were crafted by the groom. The day ended with a spectacular sunset and dancing into the night.

From Lotos and Kevin… Brasada Ranch became the perfect back drop for our wedding. Majority of our guests were family from out side of the United States, making our wedding more of a destination wedding, and we wanted to show them the beauty of Oregon. The amazing setting and delicious food cooked by Brasada Ranch created an unforgettable and intimate atmosphere.

We also wanted our wedding to reflect who we are, and we tried to put as many personal touches as possible into the wedding. As designers, it was important to us to infuse our design aesthetic as much as possible. We drew and created custom laser cut wood center pieces and painted vases to go with our flowers. The wood center pieces acted as our table numbers, and also had maps engraved on the front of cities that were of significance to us, such as where we first met or our first trip together. The groom designed and hand-cut all of the place cards. Our seating map was a nod to our architectural education. Our flowers were arranged by one of the bridesmaids, and one of our good friends made two ice cream cake for us as our wedding cake (because we love ice cream so much!) In the end, it truly took a village to put everything together! We want to thank all of our family and friends for making the trip!

Elegant Chicago Summer Wedding

With my own wedding a few months away, it’s easy to get caught up in all the planning, from guest lists to DJs. But then this Chicago wedding came along and made me stop for a minute. It got me thinking about all these sentimental moments, this beautiful Bride and her father, the sweet handkerchief for her mom. This Bride is absolutely glowing in Jacqui Cole‘s pics and this gallery is a true heart warmer.

From Jacqui Cole Photography… This stunning Chicago wedding is full of pure romance and complete joy! Elizabeth and Daniel wed in the jaw-dropping St Ignatius in Chicago. Having both met at Loyola University, the Church held a special place in their hearts. Elizabeth’s small and unique touches really made her day extra special including the tiny framed photos of her grandparents wrapped around her bouquet. Her beautiful lace Kate Spade shoes were the perfect ballet flat to dance the night away in! Not to mention Elizabeth’s stunning Allure Exclusives gown that really added an elegant and classic Chicago feel. We headed to Loyola University to take portraits around the stunning lakeside campus! The weather was a perfect sunny day. The cream stone and unique setting perfectly complemented the romantic photos that Elizabeth and Daniel were wanting. The couple chose to host their reception in the Chicago Marriott O’Hare ballroom where they pulled from the blue of the bridesmaids’ dresses to accent the room. Their day was centered around family, friends and celebrating their love for each other. It was a true joy to capture such a wonderful day!

From The Bride… My favorite moment of our day was our ceremony. I loved walking down the aisle and seeing Dan waiting happy and excited to see me at the end of it. He looked so incredibly handsome. During the ceremony, we loved being able to look out and see so many people from so many different parts of our lives who had all come together that day to watch us get married. Our style for the day was a traditional family wedding. We wanted to show where we came from, and tracked down almost every old family wedding photo, dating from 1884 onwards for both our families. I wanted something that would be beautiful that day and beautiful when I looked back in 20 years. My biggest advice to future brides would be to not worry too much – a wonderful thing is happening on your wedding day, and it’s that you get to marry the one you love.

Vintage Lancaster Gallery Wedding

Incorporating her love of art and his love of Superman comic books, this vintage inspired affair is the perfect blending of backgrounds. From the Bride’s DIY’d Brooch bouquet, to handmade comic book boutonnieres, to the reclaimed barn wood cupcake stand, every detail played a hand in their love. Shot in a photojournalistic style, Tennison Photography was behind the lens snapping up every detail here!

Vintage

From Tennison Photography… The couple, Courtney and Ryan Krumm were married at the Mulberry Art Studios September 27, 2014 in the city of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. We loved the unique blending of vintage and artistic tastes with the groom’s interest in classic comics. The community in Lancaster city provided artistic and classic motifs with venues from getting ready and hotel accommodations at the Lancaster Arts Hotel and ceremony+reception at the Mulberry Art Studios. The fun part of their day was the bridal party stroll in and through downtown Lancaster.

From the beautiful Bride… We met after college and grad school, respectively, by chance at a time when we were both making the tricky transition from the protective bubble of school life to the real adult world. We quickly discovered a bond among our distinct (and decidedly opposite) personalities. After several years of establishing ourselves in our respective fields, moving to New York City, the timing was finally right to plan the wedding we both envisioned. Once planning began, it became clear that we would have to think outside of the box in order for our differing aesthetics and interests to be equally represented. Though I initially feared the day turning into a “Superman” wedding, it was important to me for the day to represent both of us, which we accomplished through subtle and classic touches. Ryan’s intense attention to detail helped to reign me in and make choices from the seemingly endless options. We settled on a vintage inspired theme, incorporating my love of art with Ryan’s love of comic books, all tied together using gilded frames to keep the vintage feel, while elements of wood permeated throughout to balance things out with a nod to the rustic beauty of the farm-centric area.

I was blessed with a crafty family who were instrumental in helping me gather frames, brooches, and other items, not to mention putting everything together, which was a nice way to connect throughout the planning process. My sister was the main crafter, taking elements from several sets of instructions for projects to make something wholly unique. The brooch bouquet was the biggest challenge as gathering them can be very time consuming and expensive! I countered this through my savvy mother-in-law’s access to local flea markets for vintage pieces and supplemented with cheaper plastic versions, that we “antiqued” with black shoe polish. We incorporated the comic book theme visually through my sister’s handmade paper boutonnieres and cake topper, which also included brooches to tie things together. We also added it into the table assignments, where each table had a different superhero wedding comic cover. Ryan’s personal interest in graphic design helped us tremendously in saving on costs through developing our own signage (table assignments, menus, information/instructions for guests, etc.), which were all encased in eclectic frames that added to the vintage feel and now can be reused for our wedding photos. The last element of wood was found in the centerpieces and custom cupcake stand made by my father using reclaimed barn wood.

Our reliance on DIY elements was not only a way of bringing together our interests, but also a way to cut costs without sacrificing on details and classic style. Early on, we decided that photojournalistic style photography, inventive food, and a DJ who shared our musical tastes (as well as helping us end the night with karaoke!) were the elements to splurge on while saving in other areas through use of handmade projects and finding ways to trim excess expenses. I saved quite a bit on flowers through the use of the paper and brooch projects and centerpieces using bottles with less room for blooms rather than large vases that still created interest. Choosing a venue that came stocked with decorations and visual appeal (art we could customize, light fixtures and canopies) allowed us to get away with foregoing added lighting, flowers, and decor. Besides creating and printing much of our own signage, we also saved on postage weight and paper through using post cards for the RSVPs and front and back printing on the invites. Also going with a vintage style retailer for non-traditional bridesmaid dresses allowed me to keep the vintage theme and add texture when compared to my more simple gown, while also giving my girls freedom of choice on dresses they really did like and were affordable.

Lastly, it was important for me to carry over all of the themes in the visual details to the ceremony, where my love of classical music and Ryan’s movie buff nature came together better than expected. Luckily, even the Superman theme sounds classic and timeless when performed by a string trio! Overall, we were so thrilled with how everything came together and the reactions from our guests, not to mention the stunning photos, showed us that our opposite likes could come combine in a beautiful way.

Elegant Haiku Mill Wedding

After fourteen years of dating, these lifelong sweethearts wanted a wedding celebration that was worth waiting for. The decision? A sunny romantic Maui destination wedding surrounded by lush Mandy Grace Design greenery, vintage stonewalls, and elegant chandeliers. There’s no denying that Haiku Mill is something out of a fairytale, and it’s made even more beautiful at the hands of Anna Kim, right here!

From the beautiful Bride… The story of Mark and I begins with our parents, who have been close friends since before we were even born. In fact, our first encounter was probably while we were in the womb. We grew up together, were close friends, and eventually became high school sweethearts. After dating for fourteen years, we wanted to have a wedding celebration that was worth waiting for. Maui was the perfect setting, as it is not only a beautiful location, but has also been one of our favorite places to vacation together. As we began our search for venues, Haiku Mill immediately caught our attention. The more pictures and videos we saw of the Mill’s lush greenery, vintage stonewalls, and elegant chandeliers, the more we fell in love with the venue. But no matter how much we admired the venue as we planned our wedding from home, nothing could compare to how beautiful Haiku Mill is in person.

In high school and college, I took photography classes where I spent hours in the dark room developing pictures. As a result, I have an obsession with black and white; I love how the contrast makes for a sleek, sophisticated base color palette. We decided to compliment black and white with various shades of purple. Our colors made it easy to play with patterns, textures, and pops of color in an ombre effect. We had fun incorporating patterns of stripes, polka dots, chevron and gingham into multiple details, including our invitations, signage, napkins, menus, favors and even the bubble wands. Each groomsmen had a different black and white patterned tie, and received custom shoes with purple accents and a touch of gingham to wear to the reception. The purple bridesmaids dresses and flowers stood out against the black and white patterns perfectly. We choose to DIY the majority of our projects so we could personalize each detail and make our theme cohesive. From the design and construction of the invitations, programs, signage, place cards, and welcome bags, we made every detail perfect during multiple craft nights. We collected pillowcases, picture frames, and even props to use in our photo booth. We also wanted to make sure that our golden retriever, Lovie, was not forgotten, as he could not make the trip to Maui. We included him in many of our small details; the ring bearer carried Lovie’s stunt double with the rings in his collar. He was also on our cake topper, program, and in our photos.

I loved that Mandy Grace used Mark’s proposal as an inspiration for our florals. She incorporated the tulip theme as a nod to our engagement, as Mark proposed to me in a field of tulips while we were vacationing near Seattle. The bar service from Garnish was exceptional, with impeccable presentation, and signature cocktails that had our guests raving long after the night was over. This was also true for our menu, provided by Maui Executive, whose Shiitake encrusted Wagyu Beef garnered the highest compliments from Mark’s parents. Maui Sweet Cakes provided the most delicious coconut, lilikoi and pineapple coconut cupcakes we have ever had. Our photographers, Jessica and Ajja from Anna Kim Photography so sweet and easy to work with, and had the artistic eye to capture some of our most intricate details. Nate, our videographer from Sunlit Films, was genuinely enthusiastic, and so relaxed and fun. The staff at the Mill was so pleasant and accommodating; Lindsay and her assistants were calm, organized and professional. The owner, Sylvia, was so charming. When we first arrived at the Mill, she pointed out that the bricks that made up the floor of the Mill were from our hometown of Chicago. One of the biggest surprises about the property was the abundance of exotic fruit trees, which guests were free to pick from throughout the wedding week. The music theme of the night was 90s hip-hop and R&B, which was perfectly executed by DJ Randy of Ace Beats.

My favorite moment of the night was Mark surprising me with a performance of “Grow Old With You” from The Wedding Singer. It was the perfect song choice, as it was the one song I would have wanted to hear. He later told me that he actually wanted to sing that song to me since our first dates. I’m so lucky that he is the man I will grow old with. His song was a perfect way to end the best day of our lives. We couldn’t have chosen a better venue than Haiku Mill, a beautiful canvas that we were able to make our own for one amazing day.

Natural Greenery Fall Wedding Inspiration

While I’ll never turn down a beautiful rose bouquet, lately my floral fantasies lean more towards the wild side. I’m craving greens and lots of them, and Whim Events tapped right into that with this shoot by Deborah Zoe. These natural greenery styles are both elegant and rustic, untamed and eye catching and Robinson Press created some stunning stationery to match. Take a walk on the wild side right this way.

From Whim Events… 2015 brides seem to be taking a whole new approach to “floral design.” Many of our brides have been asking us for greens, greens and more greens. And some have even requested no flowers at all. Their vision includes lush, wild spaces full of leaves and ferns, magical indoor forests of wild wonder. And we love it. Because, sometimes you have to bring floral design back to its roots… in a literal sense. There is so much beauty and lushness within the simplicity of textural foliage.

This photo shoot was inspired by these magical forest trendsetters. We hope to inspire more brides to open their minds to the idea of wedding florals turning over a whole new leaf (pun wildly intended!). Not getting married but still love this look? It’s also perfect for a gorgeous table!

We set out to create a scene completely inspired by the earthy color and texture of the magnolia leaf. With it’s minimalistic colors of tan and green, we also chose to incorporate pops of copper for a surprise and whimsical element. The shoot centered around a sweetheart table, to create an intimate and magical green space for the pair. The colors were copper, green, natural tones & cream.

We framed the couple with a draping green garland as well as a runner of greens down the center of their table. Weaving multiple textures of greenery and copper accents into one another, the garland was made of the magnolia leaf, fern and copper painted chili peppers. The bouquets were made of the same elements, featuring flowing plant-dyed silk ribbon from Silk and Willow in the color scheme.

We chose each detail of the table scape so that it would reflect the color and texture the magnolia leaf. We loved pairing the cream plates with the pop of green from the wine goblet, all atop the natural colored linen. We accented the table with copper napkin rings and copper candlelight.

The paper suite integrated those naturalistic elements in detail. The letterpress stationery was created by Robinson Press. The design features an ornate and flowing calligraphic typeface as the focal point, bolstered by natural texture and subtle pattern. The leaf pattern used in the RSVP envelope was adapted from an historic American folk pattern, the ecru paper stock is 100% cotton and manufactured in the USA, and the metallic wood veneer paper is made by an almost 200 year old paper mill in Germany.

From Deborah Zoë Photography… This shoot was part of a workshop Deborah Zoe Photography led at her home on the North Shore. We wanted to create a “real” wedding atmosphere including aspects such as getting ready, to bridal portraits and more. Little did we know that it would snow that day forcing our workshop to be held indoors, after we had planned everything for outside! It turned out to be magical though and we love the look and feel of intimacy created by photographing the couple and the table scape in our home!

Blush + Gold Rosemary Beach Wedding

Rosemary Beach is quickly becoming a favorite destination of mine… and I’ve never actually been there. Every time I come across a wedding at this Floridan venue, I’m awe struck. And sure enough, with this gorgeous blush and gold soiree planned by Christina Gillon, I’m mesmerized with the romance and beauty, captured by Leslie Hollingsworth. See why I’m so obsessed right this way.

From The Bride… Our wedding day was everything I had dreamed of and so much more. From the perfect wedding day weather (after a few very cold days!) to dancing and laughing with our closest family and friends all weekend – it was a dream.

Richard & I had discussed a Caribbean destination wedding but we couldn’t find anything that quite fit. We also knew with three sets of grandparents they would not be keen to the idea of flying. Therefore we settled on finding something within driving distance from our home in Jacksonville Beach and the rest of our family in central Florida – and the hunt began!

I envisioned an indoor ceremony with an outdoor tented reception overlooking the beach since the beginning. I stumbled upon Rosemary Beach (on SMP where else!) and it was beyond ideal. We drove the six hours from Jacksonville two days later and fell in love. After seeing the sprawling green lawns overlooking the picture perfect white sand beach, roaming the idyllic town and visiting the quaint town hall we were sold.

I had an idea in my head of a palette filled with blush and gold, lush flowers and vintage touches. It all came together when I bought my glitzy gatsby-esque Modern Trousseau gown and started working with my amazingly talented coordinator Christina and Designer/Florist Brian of Myrtie Blue. Brian helped bring my vision to life and created the most spectacular yet intimate layout for our reception filled with three tents, a romantic sequined sweetheart table, glimmering bulb lighting over an open air dance floor, vintage lounge furniture, delicate sheer table runners, lush centerpieces and the most gorgeous entrance complete with draped curtains and wooden lamp posts. Seeing the finished product after a year of planning and dreaming I felt like the luckiest girl in the world and was completely blown away.

My vendors created a paramount atmosphere for the day. Townsend Catering delivered the most delicious meal I have ever devoured as well as above and beyond service. Bay Kings Band played just about every song on my request list, had everyone on the dance floor until the last song and my guests are STILL talking about how amazing they were. My photographer Leslie was there to capture it all in the most breathtaking photos and even there to bustle my gown! Of course my coordinator Christina was one step ahead of me from beginning to end and I can not possibly rave about her enough.

One of my favorite details from the reception was our escort display. While discussing how to show off our seating arrangements many ideas were thrown around until we settled on a large mirror. This was a fete for 200 guests but Brian more than delivered! I fell in love with the mirror concept and was dying to use more. I ended up using mirrors from our home for additional displays. My favorite was my late grandmother’s mirror used to display our cupcake flavors!

I tried to personalize as many details as possible. We wrapped my bouquet with a blessed rosary from my aunts, my great grandmother’s brooch and the first piece of jewelry Richard ever bought me, a small heart necklace. At the reception we used my mother-in-law’s cake stands, displayed our grandparents wedding photos next to the guest book and brought in a local band as well as brews from Jacksonville. My creative mother-in-law also made our invitations. She created a stunning shadow box masterpiece that blew every lucky recipient away. She also designed and printed our programs and menus AND made my bridesmaids sparkly belts!

There are more unforgettable memories from our wedding day than I could possibly recount. I will never forget watching the setup take place from the balcony at my mother-in-laws rental cottage overlooking the green and getting a glimpse at some surprises Brian had in store for me, I think I squealed! The look on Richard’s face when he saw me in my gown for the first time and realizing I was more nervous than him! Seeing my ten stunning bridesmaids lined up before the ceremony looking more beautiful than I could have imagined in their pale pink Jenny Yoo gowns. Laughing uncontrollably during the speeches when my maid of honor tripped over her words and described me as “the perfect friend for her man” and Richard’s brother closed his best man speech with a quote from ‘Bridesmaids.’ Dancing with my dad to a song he wrote and recorded just for our special moment.

Our wedding was the pinnacle of our 11 years relationship. A true manifestation of the love we have for each other and everyone in our lives through the most incredible celebration filled with enough laughs, love and pretty to last a lifetime.

Top 12 Questions to Ask Your Caterer

Hands down, one of my absolute favorite parts of planning my wedding has been working with our on-site caterer to select our menu, cocktails and do the tasting. But I also realized just how important it is to be on the same page as your caterer—from the style of service you choose to where your food is sourced. So we’ve partnered up with one of the greats in the industry, Paula LeDuc Fine Catering (who’ve been whipping up gorgeous bites for years) to round up some of the key questions you should be asking.

1. ARE RENTALS USUALLY PROVIDED BY THE CATERER?

It is possible for event rentals to be provided by the caterer, the planner or even the client; however we recommend that the caterers contract and manage the event rentals. This is especially helpful for a variety of reasons. We at Paula LeDuc Fine Catering offer, as part of our management, the service that we meet the rental provider, direct load in and count in all rental equipment as well as inventory these items at the end of the event. This reduces/eliminates the question of loss and breakage; ultimately saving you money. In managing this order from the beginning, your caterer is able to make sure that they have everything that they need for service to be successful.

2. WHICH STYLE OF SERVICE IS RIGHT FOR OUR WEDDING?

Style of service refers to the overall flow of the culinary portion of the event. Are guests sitting with served plates, is it family style service or is it a roaming food station event. Knowing this information and talking through what that means affects staffing, equipment and cost to the client. An understanding of the client’s goals for the event helps to steer this decision. Do you want to imbibe a familial atmosphere? Then maybe family style is for you. Do you want your guests up and mingling because they have been traveling all day or maybe you want different groups to have a chance to meet each other? Then a food station event might be just the thing.

3. DO CATERERS PROVIDE THE COCKTAILS AND BARTENDER? ARE THERE CORKAGE FEES?

Understanding whether your caterer provides alcohol is important to your planning process. If your caterer does have a license, it streamlines the planning and creative process to offer a beautiful food and beverage event that is fully cohesive. Having a trained bartender is extremely important, not only for your guest experience but also for licensing issues. Corkage can vary widely based on wedding location, if the caterer is providing liquor and you are providing the wine, etc. At Paula LeDuc we offer our dinner wines on consumption which is often a cost savings since many clients would need to purchase the wine that they may not fully consume.

4. WHAT SHOULD WE KEEP IN MIND WHEN CONSIDERING OUR WEDDING CATERING BUDGET?

Knowing a client’s price range is so helpful and really is imperative to creating an accurate proposal. At Paula LeDuc Fine Catering, since we do customize every proposal, we have the ability to tailor the menu and equipment and even staffing ratios to fit a client’s budget. For example, creating a menu that features a delicious roasted game hen as opposed to a filet of beef can have a great affect on overall cost – but is a delicious and very San Francisco option for dinner. Looking closely at things like chair styles, flatware and glassware styles also can help have some control over cost. And while we always want to staff an event comfortably for the ultimate in 5 star service, depending on the layout of the venue (how close the kitchen is, etc) and the seating specifics (are we seating for 8 or 10) there can be some ability to adjust staff for cost savings.

5. DOES MY CATERER NEED A LICENSE?

Every caterer should be operating under a license and out of a health inspected and certified kitchen. However, some caterers also have liquor licenses and that is an important question to ask. Selecting a caterer with a liquor license helps you to streamline your preparations and enables the food and beverage to be in perfect harmony for your event.

6. SHOULD WE HAVE A TASTING WITH OUR CATERER?

A tasting is the perfect opportunity for a couple to test drive their wedding menu. We recommend doing this once you have selected your caterer (based on reputation, recommendation of your planner, etc), narrowed down your menu and within the same season of your wedding when possible. The purpose of the tasting is to decide between items that you aren’t sure between and to, where necessary, taste items for palate adjustment (a bit less spice; we love the fresh herbs, can we have more?, etc.) If there is an item that you have tasted before or just know that you want it as is – don’t taste it. Instead, focus on the decisions that you are trying to make to solidify your menu. It isn’t a good idea for the tasting to have so many items that everyone walks out too full and overwhelmed to make decisions or even remember one item from the next. Also – don’t forget about the beverages! At Paula LeDuc Fine Catering our Sommelier sees the tasting as the perfect opportunity to finalize wine pairings for the dinner, and our mixologist loves to shake up those featured cocktails. Be selective but thorough in working with your caterer to select your tasting menu and it will be a successful rehearsal for your event.

7. WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT FOR TIMING AND FLOW OF SERVICE?

The flow of your service is an important discussion point. May service continue quietly during toasts or a presentation or no? This will affect the length of dinner service. Also, important aspects such as toasts can often be shifted 5 minutes here or there. But a seafood entrée will suffer if it sits 5 minutes. Have a plan, discuss your plan with your caterer and then be flexible.

8. DO CATERERS USUALLY PROVIDE STAFF?

This is an important question to ask. Not all caterers provide staff or if they do, the staff is subcontracted from a staffing agency. While there are pros and cons to each, we at Paula LeDuc Fine Catering do provide our own staff and feel that the training and certification of this staff is part of our brand and part of your experience. Your guest may not come in contact with our chef or our sommelier, but will most definitely interact with the staff throughout your event. It is important that the interaction and experience is consistent with our brand and with the goals for your event.

9. SHOULD WE TIP OUR CATERER?

Gratuity is such a personal discussion and should be based on your ability to add this cost, your overall feeling about your experience, etc.

10. WHERE DOES THE CATERER SOURCE THEIR FOOD FROM?

Paula LeDuc Fine Catering sources seasonally, locally and sustainably. The company has long been convinced that the best tasting and most nutritional food is organically grown and harvested in ways that are ecologically sound. With this understanding, we began cultivating an organic garden in the center of the Napa Valley to produce seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs for our dishes. How your caterer sources should be a part of every food discussion and part of your decision in selecting your caterer. However, remember that geography, cost and availability can affect this. We are fortunate to be located in the Bay Area which has long growing seasons and a wide variety of local culinary options, but every region has reasons to shine.

11. ANY ADDITIONAL FEES WE SHOULD KEEP IN MIND?

Additional fees can occur when venue challenges arise, special requests (which we love!) necessitate additional work hours/coordination/shipping fees etc. However, at Paula LeDuc Fine Catering it is important to us that your proposal as closely reflects your actual cost as possible. We enjoy having a phone call or even a personal meeting with every client so that we can ask these questions, determine your food, beverage, aesthetic and budgetary goals and then build your proposal based on your answers. We do not provide immediate and cookie-cutter proposals as this is a disservice to our clients in the long run. We enjoy that personal touch and look forward to it as part of the planning process.

12. CAN WE USE A SEPARATE VENDOR FOR OUR CAKE? ARE THERE CAKE CUTTING FEES?

This is an important question as it varies widely by caterer and hotel banquet department. As a full service caterer, Paula LeDuc has a full-time Pastry Chef and Pastry Department, continuously developing and creating innovative and delicious dessert options. We do not specialize in wedding cakes and realize that this is a niche in the pastry world already filled with incredible talent. We are happy to coordinate, manage or recommend someone to craft your ideal wedding cake. We do not charge a cake cutting fee — our staff is working hard to make your event perfect and are happy to cut your wedding cake for you!

The Paloma

On a recent trip to Mexico the Mr. and I fell in love with a little cocktail called The Paloma.  The Paloma combines tequila with the tart and fresh flavors of grapefruit and lime juice to create the most refreshing of libations.  Typically The Paloma is topped with a lime or grapefruit wedge, but I really love adding a slice or two of jalepenos for some heat or a fresh sprig of mint to cool it down. Truly, MKR

Either way you shake it, or top it, I guarantee The Paloma will quickly become a new five o’clock favorite.

Rustic Lake Placid Summer Wedding

Home to past Olympic games, the picturesque town of Lake Placid deserves a gold medal for itself. With postcard worthy views, the town’s energetic spirit rubbed off on this fantastically fun wedding, captured by the talented Christian Oth Studio. I notice a new favorite detail each time I go through these pics, from the Bride’s gorgeous Peter Langner gown to the African animal statues – see them all right here!

From The Bride… Kyle and I went to the same high school but didn’t know each other. He was a year younger and only 5’4 at the time; he had a crush on me from afar but we never interacted. I was busy paying attention to the older boys but remember seeing Kyle in the hallway and thinking that if he would grow a little he’d end up being really cute. I moved after sophomore year of high school (we moved all over Belgium, NYC, VA, CT, MA). Fast forward 15+ years and we’re at a mutual friends wedding, Kyle grew a full foot (he’s 6’4 now) and was as handsome as I had thought he would be with a little added height. He asked me out to a Kanye/JayZ concert in front of 25 of our friends… so I thought he was joking and said no. A couple months later we ran into each other a few times and after our last run-in on St. Patrick’s Day (a lucky day for someone with the last name Ireland) he sent me a note via Facebook that said “I’m passing you 10 digits that could change your life” and sent me his phone number. Needless to say, I couldn’t say no to a line like that; we went on our first date and have been together ever since and engaged 18 months later ( he proposed in Cape May, NJ, where his grandparents met) and married in Lake Placid where I have a summer home.

The elements of our wedding were a mixture of things that were important to us; all the vendors were from Saratoga a nearby upstate town and we incorporated as many of our friends as we could. All the goodies in the gift bags were from our friends’ businesses in Lake Placid… with the exception of the jelly beans from Village Market in Wilton, CT – the town that Kyle grew up in and our paths first crossed.

My parents live in Kenya (my Dad is head of GE Africa) and I just started an ecomm business MAIKnyc bringing African jewelry and accessories to the US. Kyle’s first time out of the country was spending New Years in Kenya with my family! We had white animal heads in our cocktail tents, little elephant figurines on our cocktail tables, the groomsmen were given blue Masai beaded belts and we were introduced to the Shakira song Waka Waka which is one of our favorite happy songs!

Being in Lake Placid you couldn’t deny the Olympic tie-in (two Olympics were hosted in Lake Placid, 1980 and 1932) and we were getting married in an Olympic year, Sochi 2014. My father also worked for NBC for 10 years and has been to almost every Olympics since! We had travelled to Sochi for the Olympics that year as well, so it was especially meaningful for us. Our venue was in a field on a private property and in the distance you can see the old Olympic ski jumps, it’s very cool and scenic. Therefore we lit the Olympic torch to signify the start of the dinner and dancing festivities! It was such a fun and unique moment!

The bridesmaids wore different dresses, all in ivory textured fabrics – I wanted all the girls to feel like themselves! Most of the dresses were by Thread; Melissa Akey Drayer is a friend and I worked freelance for her and Beth Blake some years back. We gave them wine glasses with their caricature painted on them, Ugg slippers with the wedding logo hand painted on them by a local Lake Placid artisan (doe and buck with a little heart).

My dress was Peter Langner; he’s a master with fabrics and the dress fit so well with the setting. My earrings were by Jamie Wolf who also designed my rings. I borrowed a diamond bracelet from my mother’s best friend and someone who has been a wonderful presence in my life, Barbara Calhoun. I also wore my maternal grandmother’s wedding pearls as a bracelet and carried my paternal grandmother’s hankie as well as wore her wedding band on my middle right finger (as I do every day since she passed away).

Our table settings included fiesta ware (my whole family has been collecting fiesta for generations), antique milk glass, and the most beautiful linens, all hand selected and customized for our event! Our invitation and save the date were done by Mr Boddington’s; they did an incredible job customizing a map for our STD and including my parents house and various Lake Placid locations in both the STD and the list of events! They were adorable!

We had the most incredible time. Every detail was perfectly executed.

Whimsical Garden Wedding

This, loves, is how you do a wedding.  You hold an amazingly gorgeous ceremony in a garden (complete with stunning floral arch from Bunched Together), rock the prettiest of gowns from Anaessia and cap it all off with a colorful reception that is the one seriously fun party with friends and family.  Oh, and you most definitely hire Jonathan Ong to capture all of the pretty.  Click here for the full gallery.

From the Jonathan Ong… Kim is a wedding photographer herself (www.hellokimbo.com) so it was an honour (and also slightly stressful for me!) for her to ask me to photograph her wedding. Apparently, the number one question she was asked was “who’s going to photograph your wedding?”

Their wedding was in spring in Melbourne and held at Abbotsford Convent. They had a lovely garden ceremony and the rain held off ’till after the ceremony which was such a blessing! Their reception was laced with greenery and a giant LOVE sign. Every part of their wedding was considered from a photographer’s point of view (especially in regards to light) which made it real easy for me, plus the fact that they are just the loveliest people so it was great to photograph them.  One of my favourite weddings of all time.

From the Bride… Our ceremony was held in the Gardens at Abbotsford Convent. Nick and I love the outdoors and aren’t huge fans of dark churches and also wanted our ceremony to be close to our reception. So that was our reason for choosing the gardens. Plus the fact that with the backdrop of the convent and flora, it is beautiful!

We decided to write our own vows independently and our minister, Roger, made sure the word count was close and that they were similar. I’m so pleased we decided to write our own vows. They were so personal to us and really struck a chord on the day. There were a lot of tears!

The only decorations that we decided to lash out on was the floral arch for our ceremony. I’m a huge fan of colour, so that was pretty much my only request to the florist, was to make something nice, colourful and pretty!

We decided on Bursaria and the Abbotsford Convent, as I had heard that the food was excellent there! Nick and I like to think we are foodies, so the tasting was a lot of fun for us! The service was excellent, too and our experience with our wedding coordinator, Shelley, was a breeze! She was fantastic, made us feel comfortable and at ease knowing she was there to boss everybody around!

All of the decorations on the roof of the convent were designed and executed by our very talented florists Bunched Together! My only request to them was lots of colour and flowers to fill the tables! They also provided the favours (succulents), and did a wrapping station at the end of the night which meant all of the guests could take a bouquet home and the flowers didn’t go in the bin!

We didn’t do a lot of traditional wedding things during the reception. We only did a few short speeches and then a daggy first dance! Our cake was a macaroon cake so we didn’t bother cutting it!

The typography on the signage was created by my friends at Big Picture Stuff! They are amazingly talented twins who crafted all of our signage.

Nick is a record collector and we decided to bring a few along to get people to sign them so we could store them away in our collection!

Spring Santa Barbara Wedding at Villa Sevillano Part II

The only thing more stunning than Part I of this Santa Barbara dreamfest is probably the reception that followed. Set beneath a billowing canopy and twinkling chandeliers are long, floral-covered tables designed by Renny And Reed and Jenna Lam Events that take springtime romance to a whole new level. The wildly talented Jose Villa documented each moment behind the camera, and Cana Family captured the film to tie it all together. And just in case you missed it, see the Welcome Party and Rehearsal Dinner that preceded this truly perfect day.

From Jenna Lam Events  After cocktails, guests moved down to the property’s polo field where they found the custom open-air structure we built for dinner. There, under a billowing, gauzy fabric canopy, Renny & Reed, had decked each table with arrangements of lush peonies, blush garden roses, and clematis . The tables glimmered with rose gold accents. The light of the full moon shined down, casting the perfect glow for an intimate wedding dinner. Afterwards, guests were invited into the dance tent for Joanne & Alex’s first dance, a beautifully choreographed routine to Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years” performed by Impulse, accompanied by a 10-piece string section. Drinks flowed from the custom boxwood bar built by Renny & Reed until it was time to bid the couple adieu. Joanne & Alex departed in a vintage Rolls Royce for the after-party at a local club that we transformed into a Moroccan lounge, complete with belly dancers and hooka lounge.

Ischia Waterfront Engagement Session

Upon poring over these stunning images from Ashlee Taylor, this stylish duo’s anticipation, excitement and pure love was immediately apparent. Ear-to-ear grins, sweet forehead kisses and gorgeous views filled the moments leading up to their rehearsal dinner—and if you ask me? A pre-wedding day engagement sesh should be the next new thing, because it doesn’t get any better than this.

From Ashlee TaylorOur effortlessly stylish couple walked through the streets in Natalie in her Jimmy Choo‘s and Mark effortlessly in head to toe J.Crew and greater locals as they sauntered to their rehearsal dinner at the beautiful Coco Mare restaurant where they joined their family and friends.

Its always special to spend time with a couple just before their wedding day you can feel their anticipation and tremendous love they have between them about their up coming nuptials. I think in this instance the feeling was heightened since so much work had gone into planning their destination wedding and it was all their plans had pulled off so beautifully.

Natalie and Mark wanted me not just to focus on them during the shoot but also the natural beauty and rich culture of this special island. Capturing street life, people talking and the social buzz of the locals.

From Jenna Lam Events  On a warm May evening, in the gardens of Villa Sevillano, Joanne and Alex exchanged I dos. The couple’s 2 daughters, Penelope and Georgia, were amongst the 7 flower girls. The processional included “Georgia on my Mind” and “Penny Lane” as an ode to each daughter. After the ceremony, guests mingled in the garden for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Paula Le Duc Fine Catering served some of the couple’s favorites: short rib beggars purses, halibut tartar, peking duck mini tacos and hand-rolled pizzas, grilled to order. Perfection!

Organic Rabbit Baby Shower

I’ve attended and planned many a baby shower in the past few years, but I must admit, this might take the cake as the most adorable. Beautifully planned and styled by Kelly McWilliams, this organic rabbit-inspired fête has a wonderfully intimate yet elegant vibe, and the soon-to-be daddy, Cody Hunter, captured every priceless moment perfectly. See even more here.

Event Planner, Kelly McWilliams created a beautiful rabbit themed baby shower for her photographer friend Tiffany (who happens to be my wife!) Tiffany had told her she’d always wanted a very organic feeling shower with little woodland animals or bunnies (since she was decorating her son’s room with the same feel).

Kelly used a very clean organic pallet and incorporated simple greenery, root vegetables that she found at the local farmer’s market and several paper mache rabbits to create the overall feel. The invitations were created by Kelly herself using old torn tea-stained pages from the book “Peter Rabbit.”

Surrounded by her close friends they had a fun luncheon shower with a few games and gifts. One of Tiffany’s favorite details was the custom block making station. “It gave me a sweet handmade keepsake from every one of my friends who was there. So much more fun than a guestbook and something our son Asher can have forever.”

Modern + Chic Philadelphia Wedding

My recent craving? A modern beauty. A fete packed with a touch of sparkle, a pop of color and a hint of ballroom elegance. Lauren Gabrielle delivered exactly that with this Princeton to Philadelphia wedding that now happily lives in our galleries. And beyond those gorgeous details (hello, cake perfection!), live pretty portraits captured by Lauren that’ll sweep you right off your feet.

From Lauren Gabrielle PhotographyKellie and Jeff met in the lively New Jersey Shore town of Belmar, NJ. Jeff was renting a beach house for the summer, and Kellie was invited down by a mutual friend for a July 4th celebration. After they were introduced, they realized that they must have met many years ago because they grew up in the same hometown where Kellie’s father was Jeff’s soccer coach. After they met, Kellie was a frequent visitor to the beach house the remainder of the summer…and the rest is history!

When we began our venue search, we were hoping to find a unique venue with an open layout and beautiful views. When we first visited the Down Town Club, it was under a complete renovation. Even through all of the dust and noisy power tools, we immediately fell in love with the space. The unique Colonial feel, the breathtaking views of historic downtown Philadelphia, and Cescaphe’s impeccable reputation sold us on this amazing location. Although we were not able to see the final product until a few months later, we already knew that there was nowhere else that we could imagine celebrating the most important day of our lives with our closest friends and family.
