Plan a Fiesta Themed Bridal Bash With Pint-Sized Tequila Favors

Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner – mini Patrón favors, anyone? – so this pretty inspiration shoot from Ivy Robinson Events seemed perfectly appropriate. She’s showing you how to turn this fun day into the ultimate fiesta theme from engagement party to bridal shower, bachelorette weekend and beyond. Allison Kuhn photographed, and we’ll happily browse The Vault for even more inspiration.

FromIvy Robinson Events… What better way is there to celebrate your engagement than a Cinco de Mayo-themed engagement party? This pool-side fiesta was filled with tequila, chips, salsa and bold decor. This bride was set to celebrate her big news in the most fun way. Ivy Robinson created a festive lounge area near the pool to enhance the Cinco de Mayo vibes. Colorful pillows filled the seating area.

The overall feel was fun and energetic. Sabrina Laine styled the bride in white outfits with poppy accessories. The engagement invite designed by Bohemian Ink was enclosed in a gold-glittered box with a small tequila bottle with a hand drawn tag “Drink Me” to invite guests to this this party and get them in the fiesta spirit! Every element was designed to be fun, modern and stylish.

Master the Art of a Large Dinner Party

Sometimes bigger is better. Usually that applies to candy stashes and shoe collections and once in awhile… dinner parties. Whether you have 4 guests or 40, there are a certain tricks of the trade that will have you entertaining with ease. Lauren Kelp promise it’s doable and if her pop up dinner party hosted with Ashley Cooper in Nashville is any indication, her tips will have you mastering the art of a large dinner party. See even more captured by Josh Ulmer in the VAULT.

Whether you are hosting a party for 2 of 200, setting the table and creating a space that allows your guests to feel relaxed and comfortable is key. Today we are going to show you how to set the perfect table for a big dinner party. What makes me an expert on this? Well, every few months the fabulous fashion illustrator & graphic designer Ashley Cooper and I pick a new city and host about 40 people – creatives, local influencers, photographers, designers, you name it – who are doing something interesting in their city for a big, fantastic, heartwarming dinner party.

We call these dinner parties Tablemakers (http://laurenkelp.com/tablemakers/) where we are creating an event where everyone can eat great food, drink delicious wine, make new friends, and celebrate community.

Sounds fun, right? It is! Big dinner parties are my favorite & they are much easier than many people think. So call up your favorite caterer (or, heck, try it yourself!), invite 40 of your favorite people over, and let’s have a party!

STEP ONE: Picking the Perfect Place

I am a huge proponent of throwing dinner parties that feel intimate no matter the head count. Backyards, porches, dining rooms that spill into living rooms, front yards – whatever allows your guests to relax, feel comfortable, and stay awhile is the perfect place to throw a party in my book!

Entertaining rules are mostly there as guidelines, in my opinion, so it’s okay to tweak them depending on the situation. Is your living room larger than your dining room? Flip them! Push the sofas against the wall and move the harvest tables in so you can seat more people. Don’t worry, your friends will help you move the sofas back!

Don’t be afraid to play with different seating options. Once you’ve got the place picked out, now it’s time for a little logistics. Determine how many guests you want at your fabulous get-together so you can accurately configure seating. Maybe you have multiple long tables with benches instead of chairs or perhaps you’ve got several open seating options so people and eat and mingle as they see fit.

For our latest gathering, we hosted our guests in a historic home turned flower shop in the heart of East Nashville. We sat 40 new friends at harvest tables encircled around fresh flowers in the shops store front. It was intimate, but it allowed our guests to stay awhile & celebrate that community ambiance we hold dear.

STEP TWO: Setting the Table

Unless you are hosting a formal gathering, there is no need to set a full place setting. I say ditch the bread plates and think family style!

Whenever I host a large dinner party, I try to keep the place settings as minimal as possible so I have a ton of space in the middle of the table. This allows me to place the family style dishes, carafes of water, wine decanters, and bread baskets down the table so guests can serve themselves, grab seconds, and get to know their neighbors by serving them. Plus, it creates a relaxed ambiance & saves time on cleanup (and who doesn’t love that?)

Grab your favorite plates, mix and match your stemware, and have some fun with it!

STEP THREE: It’s All in the Details!

With the amount of large dinner parties we have thrown the best ones are always the gatherings that have a few extra little details. Set your dinner party apart by going a little bit above and showing your guests how thrilled you are they spent the evening at your party.

Set the tone to your dinner by placing the evening’s menu on top of the dinner plate – this makes for a lovely table decor as well. Go for something extra personal and write a fun fact about each guest on a small note card, place a note card in front of each place setting, & use them as ice-breakers. This is especially fun for parties where guests don’t know each other.

Send your guests off with a piece of the decor – like a mini potted plant or a small bouquet of flowers. Each little detail helps impact the dinner as a whole and creates a night your guests will not forget.

Above all else, remember to have fun! This is your night to celebrate with your friends & your community, so relax, have an extra glass of wine, and give yourself a pat on the back – you did it!

Five Years Later, This is Why We’re Still in Love with the Royal Wedding

Five years ago we huddled around our televisions at 4 a.m.wide-eyed and giddily awaiting the Royal Wedding. Worth it? You bet. From Kate’s long-sleeve lace Alexander McQueen gown, to Pippa’s figure flaunting dress, to the newlyweds spontaneous double kiss on the balcony (!!) – it was, and still remains, the wedding of the century. Why? Because every single detail was fit for royalty!

As we celebrate Will and Kate’s anniversary we can’t help but think just how perfect their marriage has been, especially now that they’ve welcomed two adorable children: Prince George and Princess Charlotte (our latest royal obsessions—have you seen Prince George meeting Obama?)! So, today, we’re breaking out the bubbly and indulging our royal obsession to celebrate half a decade of Will and Kate. Cheers!

Alert: Serious Office Envy Ahead

It may be the blush pink walls or the modern copper accents (or all of the above) but the chemistry of this simple yet crazy pretty office is undeniable. Head quarters for calligrapher, Natalie, of Papel & Co.; this space is a testament to her love of pink and her gorgeous way with handwritten art. See more of those blushing walls captured by Edelle & Co. Photography in the VAULT.

Nat has taken the world by storm with her talent, but not many have had the honor to be in her office and see that she owns great home-decor style.

Her favorite color is pink, which you’ll find everywhere in her office. Pink never looked this good.

A Spring Inspired Table You’ll Want to Copy

Spring is here and it’s time to celebrate the season by cozying on up to this tablescape dreamed up by Oh So Inspired workshop. But to simply call this the ultimate spring fete would be a major understated – I mean, just look at that floral canopy! Kevin Chin Photography + Cinema captured it all to share and we’ve got every floral filled detail waiting in The Vault!

From Nancy Liu Chin Designs….“The beautiful spring came; and when Nature resumes her loveliness, the human soul is apt to revive also. ” – Harriet Ann Jacobs

There is nothing as refreshing as a beautiful “Spring”. After a cool winter, one longs for the dreaminess, the sweetness of a new season. This feminine, garden styled table is perfection. So apt for a bright, crisp Spring afternoon. Whether it’s a bridal shower, an engagement party or a small brunch wedding reception, this combination of wisteria and cornflower blue would bring out the romantic and sentimental side in anyone.

This wonderful group of wedding professionals from all over the world came together to work on this stunning canopy at Oh So Inspired. Co-founders, Kelly McLeskey-Dolata and Nancy Liu Chin wanted to inspired their attendees to create something that was more complicated than your average centerpiece plus creating something first to finish was important for wedding professionals. Taught by esteemed floral and event designer, Nancy Liu Chin attendees were given instructions and advice on 1) how to work on large scale florals projects similar to this hanging floral canopy, 2) how to take a large scale project and break it down to smaller components that would make a job more manageable, 3) the importance of scale 4) creating a finished look from linens to flowers. Together, the group of attendees worked first on the canopy and later all were on deck to put together a table with Nancy’s styling help and Kelly’s pre planning of the rentals. It’s important when planning an event that your rentals include layers. From start to finish, the entire group of professionals worked together to fill the wooden canopy provided by Encore Events.

For those curious about this canopy, Nancy used over 200 strands of wisteria, 50 garlands of smilax and 10 bunches of luxurious green amaranthus. Various centerpieces in hand blown glassed provided by Save On Crafts lined the center of this table. Nancy likes using different sizes of glass for long tables so that your eyes are never drawn to one florals but will look around at the different colors and textures. The up and down motion that the various sizes of arrangements makes it more interesting. Open roses, sweet peas, lisianthus, dusty miller and other delicate flowers filled the table so that they work for this Spring concept. Blue colored water glasses added a bit of charm and accent of color. Kelly picked a wonderful overlay linen. Once again this delicate lace pattern create a multi layered affect. It’s having a neutral linen that is nothing but interesting. Elegant and stylish Frances Lane China adorn each place setting. Lilac place cards with white writing clipped to silver mercury holders were placed at each setting – it’s both efficient as it tells each guest were to sit but charming!

Hands on classes like this floral and styling class were just one of many wonderful creative classes that also included cake decorating, watercolor hand writing, and sketching taught by Oh So Inspired third co-founder, Mary Phan. Sessions of business advise from Sean Low, Leila Lewis of Be Inspired PR, and Marcy Blum amongst half a dozen lecturers helped professionals on subjects that included pricing, marketing, branding, social media. Most importantly, evening mixers and dinners set the tone to inspire where attendees were whisked away to secret locations. Oh So Inspired have announced their 2016 dates so be sure to check out their website at www.ohsoinspired.com. The 3rd annual OH SO INSPIRED begins November 6 – 9, 2016 in Sonoma, California.

This Intimate Wedding Will Tug Right At Your Heartsrings

Sometimes, the best things come in small packages. Case in point? This intimate Phoenix wedding. From the handwritten notes for each guest to the wine ceremony featuring a bottle bought by the Bride’s parents when she was born to use on her wedding day,  this wedding is all kinds of special. And it only gets better from there. Get all the feels, thanks to Michael + Anna Costa Photography, in The Vault!

From The Bride…Tony and I met when we were least expecting it. I was living in Phoenix at the time, and Tony in LA. One summer weekend a friend and I decided to take a road trip to LA for a college friend’s 30th birthday. I hadn’t seen our friend in ten years, so I was really excited to reconnect. She invited her new boyfriend to her birthday party, along with his two roommates. One of those roommates was Tony.

If you told me that day I was going to marry Tony, I wouldn’t have believed you. He made up a story about being a racecar driver, which I did not find amusing. But by the end of the night he dropped the racecar driver act, and I got to know a very complex, intelligent, and caring man. I was smitten. We all stayed the night at the party, and when I woke up the next day Tony had already left. Naturally, rather than asking anyone for Tony’s number, I social media stalked him.

After I found him I decided to take the risk and reach out. We met up in San Diego a couple months later for our first date and started a long distance relationship after that, which was made possible thanks to our Southwest Airlines credit cards. Our reward miles carried us back and forth for a while until I was ready to take the plunge and move to LA. Once in LA, Tony and I spent a lot of time double-dating with my college friend and Tony’s roommate. And we proudly stood by their side as they married each other a year later.

We were going for a hike down to the beach after work, so I put on my gym clothes- not cute lululemon gym clothes either. I didn’t bother re-applying my morning’s smudged makeup or brushing my hair- why would I??

I’m a planner, so I was talking to Tony about what we were going to have for dinner that night- a frozen pizza and roasted vegetables. I couldn’t figure out why he didn’t seem as excited about this as me. I had no idea he was nervously checking his pocket every two seconds making sure the ring was still there. We watched the sunset together and he was noticeably irritated by another couple that was walking close by. I joked with him that it wasn’t our private beach, and to stop being so cranky. After the couple had passed and we were all alone, Tony got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I was holding the most beautiful ring I had ever seen and trying to comprehend what was happening. Before I said “YES!” I must have said, “Is this really happening?” twenty times. We celebrated afterwards at a resort on the ocean cliffs with champagne and an amazing dinner that put my frozen pizza to shame. It was the best night of my life, knowing that I was going to get to be his partner forever.

I worked for a catering company in college, so I’ve been behind the scenes in more weddings than I can count. In my experience, the best weddings were small, intimate, and laid-back. I wanted every detail to be unique to us as a couple, and to stay true to the boho-vintage-romantic style that we were going for. This meant a small wedding with just family and close friends in a beautiful, unique setting that was both relaxed and elegant. Oh, and all on a tight budget.

Tony and I had moved to Denver since getting engaged, but all of our family and friends were spread across Arizona and California. I did a Google images search for romantic wedding venues, and much to my surprise I found everything I was looking for at a rustic venue in Phoenix. To save money and more easily secure vendors, we chose to get married on a Thursday.

Planning the wedding from Denver was not easy. I shipped all of the decorations and things for the ceremony and reception to my mom in Tucson, who rented a van and lugged it all up to the venue the day before the wedding. We couldn’t have done it without her!

I think we made it pretty difficult on ourselves by not going with anything ‘out of the box,’ but we really wanted to tailor things to our style. What I’m most proud of is Tony’s fully-custom ensemble. We put together his outfit piece by piece with a very specific look in mind. And we had fun with it too. We went to the custom clothier together and designed the suit and shirt, and even met with a tie maker to create his bowtie (we went to four fabric stores!). It seems crazy, but looking back on the pictures we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. If you have a really specific vision for something, you don’t need to limit yourself to what you see online. It might be a lot of work, but you can get creative!

I felt strangely calm when the day came. You really do feel surrounded by love, like you have an army of people around you ready to take down anything in your way. My Grandmother gave me her mother’s white and blue handkerchief as my something borrowed, old, and blue. I also wore my Great-grandmother’s ring and used her broach in my bouquet. It felt comforting knowing a part of her was with me that day.

Having a small wedding allowed us to do a lot of things that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. We wrote notes to all of our guests, telling them how much we loved them and what it meant to have them there with us. We sealed them in matching little envelopes and stamped their names and table numbers on the front and clipped them to twine strung in a big tree at the entrance, doubling as seating assignments. Our guests loved that special little touch.

My favorite part of our wedding was the ceremony. Instead of trying to rush through it to get to a party at the end, I made a point to slow down and enjoy each moment of becoming husband and wife. My mom and dad walked me down the aisle to “It’s Over” by one of our favorite bands, Civil Twilight. Weeks earlier, we met the band at one of their shows and told them we were using their song in our wedding. The lead singer was so excited. He explained the meaning of the song as surrendering yourself to someone who you love so much that every time you look at them, it’s over, you’re powerless.

Our brother-in-law officiated our wedding and added the perfect mix of humor and touching emotion. We decided to do a wine ceremony, which was a lot of fun. We used a bottle of wine that my parents bought when I was born and saved for my wedding day. Our family and wedding party poured the wine we would drink into a ceramic chalice that my parents drank out of on their wedding day.

We sealed a bottle of wine and little love letters our guests wrote us into a wooden box that Tony made, and promised to open everything on our anniversary in five years. We took turns reciting the vows we wrote to each other, and I remember everything else fading into the background. It was beautiful.

The reception was full of surprises. Tony’s brother gave a very sweet speech that all of the sudden turned into a singing performance by he and his sisters. And then my friends got up and did the exact same thing! They had also written a hilariously clever song and performed it for us, not knowing about Tony’s brother’s plans. We laughed so hard we couldn’t feel our faces!

My advice to other brides comes from my Grandmother, who eloped when she married my Grandfather; they’ll be celebrating their 59th anniversary this month. You don’t need a big, fancy, expensive wedding to have a successful marriage. What’s important is to do what’s right for the two of you-whatever that is. Know that everyone will have an opinion about everything, but this day is for you and your future husband, and that’s what matters.

A Beautiful Florence Affair Bursting with Vibrant Red and Pink Hues

Choosing a Big Day locale isn’t always easy, but for this darling duo with a love of Italian food and a dream of touring Italy, the choice was simple: Florence.  They whisked off to the land of romance and fine wine with their closest friends and family, all with the help of a talented team of vendors like Devoted To You, Tuscany Flowers and Chris+Lynn Photographers.  The results? Absolute magic with some of the most beautiful details you will ever lay your eyes upon.  Soak them all in in THE VAULT.

From Chris + Lynn Photographers… Robin & Gary knew that they wanted a small wedding with their closest family and friends. Robin had always wanted to go to Italy, and Gary had never been to Europe. After deciding to do something different, they planned to have a gorgeous wedding surrounded by gorgeous views of Florence. 40 guests traveled from various places to witness their beautiful wedding and celebrate with them. Robin wore a stunning Vera Wang wedding dress, and their decor was absolutely breathtaking with vibrant colors such as persimmon, strawberry, and papaya.

From the Bride… Gary and I started looking for a wedding venue in our hometown of Toronto but couldn’t find anything that was right for us. We decided we wanted to do something different and also small and intimate with our friends and family. We knew we wanted to have a romantic honeymoon in Europe afterwards… having a destination wedding there first seemed like the perfect solution.

We decided on Europe because Gary had never been there and we envisioned traveling together by train after the wedding. Our next decision was which country…our love of Italian food made Italy the winner! After reviewing many locations, we decided on Villa Vedetta for the amazing view of Florence – it is incredible! We wanted an outdoor wedding and it had a wonderful setting for a garden ceremony, cocktails by the pool, and dinner on a terrace facing a spectacular view of the city. The staff there also had a high level of service, was fluent in English and showed great attention to detail. It was the perfect choice!

Our wedding planner Carmen helped us through the entire process of planning our destination wedding by coordinating vendors and working with local counterparts to coordinate additional tour-related activities for our guests.

We wanted all our guests to really experience Florence so we planned a lot of activities. One day we brought everyone to a vineyard in Tuscany for a tour, wine tasting, and lunch. Another day we went to Sienna to explore the town and cathedral and to San Gimignano for local shopping. Yet another day we organized a guided walking tour of Florence. Throughout all these activities all our guests took photographs. We surprised each guest with polaroid cameras as a welcome gift when they first arrived at our hotel. We invited them to use these cameras for the duration of our trip and share the photos with us. And we made a contest as well with different categories. This was one of my favorites ideas because photography is so important to us and this activity brought us all together throughout the wedding week events. At the wedding, all the polaroids were displayed on ribbons in the reception hall; it was nice for everyone to see the trip through all the guests’ photos.

Some of my favorite memories from our destination wedding were the anticipation of getting ready and spending time with my maid of honor; taking photos on the streets of Florence, exploring the countryside of Tuscany in a vintage convertible, and our post-wedding portrait session with our photographers at the Abbey of San Galgano. It was a great adventure!

From Devoted To You… Planning this wedding for Robin and Gary has been a personal labor of love for me. From the moment we met, we clicked right away. It is always a bonus working with a bride who has so much in common with you and share the same interests. The countless hours we spent working together did not feel like work at all. We explored many cities and venue options in Europe and finally landed on Villa Le Vedetta, which has the best view of Florence and such a beautiful garden for ceremony. It was only 1.5 km away from the wedding venue of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, and we were there just a week before their wedding, so being able to avoid the paparazzi crowd was a fortunate bonus. It was a lot of fun and adventure traveling with Robin and Gary since they haven’t been to Florence. In addition to planning the group activities for the guests and making sure they had a great time, I had planned the week full of activities. I made sure everyone had time to experience Florence the way it was meant to be experienced. But equally importantly, I wanted the photographers and videographers who were with them to be able to maximize all the photo and video opportunities. I think one of the essential aspects of destination weddings is to be able to take advantage of the beautiful and unique sceneries as backdrops and take as many photos as you can.

We coordinated all the airport and train station pick-ups for the guests and kicked off the wedding weekend with a warm welcome dinner. The following day, we arranged a tour to the country side of Tuscany where we had wine tasting and lunch at a castle, followed by walking tour in the medieval town in Sienna and San Gimignano while Robin and Gary snuck away from the tour and rented a vintage car to drive around the countryside with Chris + Lynn and StillMotion following them. On the wedding day, guests were invited to a walking tour in Florence while Robin and Gary prepared for their big day. The dinner view at the terrace of Villa Le Vedetta was so surreal with Duomo in the background. Everyone had a great time and wished that the night would not end.

On the last day, we planned a farewell breakfast for all the guests to say goodbye to the bride and groom before they departed to the next stop in their trip.

A Classic Charleston Wedding Straight Out of a Magazine

Like any good Southern wedding, this Charleston day is full of charm, grace, and a whole lot of pretty. With the Bride in a beautifully beaded Badgley Mischka gown and the Groom looking dapper in a classic black tuxedo, the pair looked right at home at their gorgeous William Aiken House venue. See all the pretty for yourself, thanks to Dana Cubbage Weddings and Film Anywhere Productions, in The Vault!

From Dana Cubbage WeddingsTaylor + Joe’s wedding day was the PERFECT way to kick off the official start of the 2016 wedding season! I absolutely love shooting at the William Aiken House in downtown Charleston and Mother Nature was pretty much showing off for us, giving us nothing but blue skies and sunshine on their big day. Taylor looked absolutely stunning in her elegant Badgley Mischka gown with intricate beaded back. It was a showstopper, for sure! Joe looked so classic + dapper in his black tuxedo. These two looked like they could’ve stepped right out of a bridal magazine! I’m serious! They are such an amazing couple, both inside + out. I just LOVED spending the day with them!

After their First Look, we were joined by their bridal party for photos and it was plain to see just how loved and supported Taylor and Joe are. It was so much fun, watching them celebrate with their friends + family throughout the day. This is why I LOVE what I do! Taylor surprised Joe by having their wedding hashtag #jt2016experience posted on the marquee outside of the American Theatre, which is right next door to the William Aiken House. So, of course, we had to stop traffic and take some photos of them in the middle of King Street in front of their sign!

Their ceremony was held outside beneath the pergola and it was equal parts beautiful, unique, and memorable. I love how they mixed it up by having the bridesmaids + groomsmen line both sides of the altar, instead of the traditional arrangement of girls on the left/guys on the right. It was really fun and unique. I love it when clients do things “their way” instead of adhering to old, silly traditions. Guests enjoyed cocktail hour on the lawn before heading inside for a seated dinner. After dinner, everyone headed back outside to the dance floor to watch Taylor + Joe’s First Dance together… and then the dancefloor was packed the rest of the night! It was a beautiful way to kick off the start of a very busy wedding season and I can’t imagine spending it with anyone else.
