#SMPWedding101 – Photo Album Tips + Trends

I just received my own wedding album (!!!!) so I fully appreciate the time and talent that went into creating something that I’ll treasure for the rest of my life. But I’m also aware that when beginning the album process, well, it can be a bit overwhelming. The Album Room is here to help all you brides (and newlyweds) out there so you’re better informed and prepared. After all, your album is the last piece of the puzzle and deserves just as much attention as all the other pretty parts!

Planning For Your Wedding Album:

  • Add your wedding album to your gift registry! Guests can contribute to preserving your special day in a beautiful keepsake.
  • Make sure your photographer documents the details! They not only serve as unique reminders but are great images to transition from one part of the day to another in the album.
  • Don’t forget Mom and Dad; they of course love a few group shots but you don’t want too much time taken away from the essence of your day. Typically, people only include 4-5 key group shots in their album anyways.
  • You might want to carry on dancing but give your photographer a few minutes at the end of the day to capture one last prime moment with you and your beloved. You want your last image to be a lasting one!

Our Top Album Trends Of The Moment

  • The quaint, portable 9 inch by 9 inch size that used to only speak to parents is making a huge impression on brides and grooms. Big things come in small packages!
  • Although leather is still the front runner when picking an album cover, our sturdy but fun Buckram material is winning a competent silver medal. Buckram is a cotton fabric treated with a protective shield. It looks very classy in a pearly ivory or graphite grey.
  • The classic look of a matted album has come a long way since it was the only style on offer when our parents were married. However, it now competes with the slender, chic flush-mount albums of today.
  • The wraparound picture is making a comeback to replace the more traditional emboss (check out our Coffee Table book)!

Photo Album Advice: The Album Room

A Destination Wedding Planned From Across the World

If you’re intimidated by the idea of planning a wedding abroad, take notes from this couple, DJ and Lauren. They coordinated their big day on the Spanish island of Mallorca via emails and Skype and did it all without breaking a sweat. Ana Lui captured the pretty from beginning to end with even more to see inside The Vault.

From Ana Lui PhotographyDJ and Lauren met through mutual friends while out in Chicago (where Lauren is originally from). They both were in relationships at the time but stayed in touch and reconnected a couple of years later when the timing was right. DJ was living between Dallas and Chicago and Lauren was living in Chicago. They had a long-distance relationship for a year before Lauren decided to make the move down south (to Dallas) to be closer to DJ.

They chose to get married in Mallorca at beautiful Belmond La Residencia in Deia, which is a small village in the mountains. DJ took Lauren to Deia a few years back and she fell in love with the place.

Since the wedding took place in Spain and was mostly outdoors, the bride and groom really wanted to have a rustic feel. The hotel was an old olive press so they have chosen olive branches incorporated into everything from the bouquets to table settings to the bridesmaid’s headdresses.

For flowers, Lauren chose white roses and freesia flowers with olive foliage. Lauren is more of a minimalist and didn’t want anything to take away from the beautiful backdrop and location. The dinner area was decorated with fresh lemons hand picked from the hotel gardens.

When I asked Lauren about her experience with getting married abroad and planning the wedding via emails and Skype she said it wasn’t as stressful as I thought it would be. Deia is a small village, so allocating the guests and getting everyone out there was pretty straight forward.

From the Bride…To say I was surprised when DJ proposed is an understatement. I had absolutely no idea, which made the day incredibly special and memorable. The proposal took place at DJ’s parent’s house in the country in Scotland. We were taking a walk through the forestry on their property, which is a common activity we both enjoy when we are in Scotland when I noticed he was being a bit quieter than usual. The sun was close to setting and we came to a beautiful little lake. I turned around and he held out the box with the ring. The rest of the evening was a blur.

I never experienced anything like it. It was so peaceful and beautiful yet unpretentious. After thinking of places that had a special meaning to us, Deia stood out.

The best decision was to get married in the church. There were other places we could’ve had the ceremony on the property and around Deia that would’ve been pretty but the church was incredibly historic and beautiful.

A Gorgeous Wedding Planned Sight Unseen!

For Adwoa and Phillip, an intimate, elegant, fuss-free wedding was at the top of their priority list. With just three months to plan, they found a venue (the incredible Belmond El Encanto) online and let their vendors work their magic on the rest. The result? A wedding completely sight unseen that turned out pretty dang perfect. Gloria Mesa photographed and you can see it all inside The Vault.

From the Bride…We initially planned a small elopement (just the two of us) at the Santa Barbara courthouse followed by a destination wedding in Costa Rica. As the health concerns related to the Zika Virus came up with 3 months to go, we changed directions and opted for a small destination ceremony in Santa Barbara.

We wanted something small and intimate that reflected us. Phil’s outdoor laid-back peaceful nature with accents of simple elegance (me!) We found the venue online and our parents went to view it. Everything else was done sight unseen!

Intimate Irish Elopement on the Cliffs of Moher

Everyone may immediately think of Paris when it comes to romance but one look through Julie Paisley’s pics of this Irish elopement on the Cliffs of Moher and you may beg to differ. From the sweeping views to the look of love on these high school sweethearts’ faces, it’s priceless. From the pics to Hoo Film’s clip, we’ve been kissed by the Irish – see it all in our Vault right this way!

From Julie Paisley PhotographyHigh school sweethearts, Courtney and Shandon decided that a destination elopement fit their personalities. They both have a love for adventure, so having their ceremony at the Cliffs of Moher was the perfect backdrop for their very sweet intimate ceremony. Tying in Courtney’s love of pink and emerald green for Ireland, Lindsey from Petal and Pine created an amazing bouquet that fit Courtney’s personality perfectly. From the beautiful grounds of the Ross Castle, where they honeymooned, to the stunning Cliffs of Moher, these two might not have had a big wedding but it certainly was not lacking in beauty or love.

From the Bride…I am Hannah Campbell-Anderson, owner of Day of Gal- a partial coordination company and a proud member of the wedding industry! I got engaged to the best man in the world Kurt Anderson! He surprised me in our own home with 30 of our friends as well as family waiting on Skype The ring is an homage to a favorite ring of my grandmothers of white, yellow and rose gold. Hidden inside the band is a ruby, Kurt’s birthstone and the “heart” stone.

In choosing where to get married the location and overall weekend experience was really important to us. We searched for a place where once our guests arrived they could toss their car keys and not have a care in the world. We wanted a place where we could create a community of our favorite people for one whole weekend. We chose El Capitan Canyon and thus began the journey to #CampAnders #CanyonDigIt?

As part of their Save The Date, guests received a leather arrowhead luggage tag embossed with their names to get them excited about traveling to Santa Barbara. Along with the thickest, copper edged, copper foil printed, save the date invite from Amber Moon Design. To be followed by an equally incredible formal invitation.

It was a 2 day affair of friends and family holed up in El Capitan Canyon. Upon arrival guests (and vendors!) were gifted an El Capitan camp mug (that gets you free coffee for life!) and the ‘newspaper’ which Amber Moon Design put together and we called the ‘CampAnders Chronicle’. It contained the list of events for the weekend as well as other fun facts about the history of the kilt, my great grandmother’s wedding announcement, (more on both of those below) etc. Throughout the weekend guests were directed to each ‘event’ by a huge arrowhead made by Kurt that had interchangeable signs: “Gather” “Dance” and “Denim and Plaid”.

Friday night was a mandatory dress code of denim and plaid. It was a hoedown complete with lanterns, wool blankets, and a garland made of old jeans donated by our friends. We noshed on a classic Santa Barbara BBQ, with our very own ‘Kurt and Hannah’s Famous Bourbon BBQ Sauce’ slathered over an open spit dinner by El Cap. We kicked up the dust with bluegrass tunes from Moonsville Collective. S’mores and a campfire to round out the night, and guests left with a ‘nightcap’ of our favorite bourbon in ‘to-go’ bags by Amber Moon Design. I wore the Campbell Family Tartan sash with a vintage family kilt pin and gold jeans…. Obviously.

Saturday- guests were lead to the ceremony area, high above the ocean, with the Santa Ynez mountains as a back drop by a bagpiper as a nod to my Scottish heritage. Kurt surprised me with a handmade steel ‘HK’ logo under the incredible copper arch made by Sweet Emilia Jane and adorned by The Little Branch. Wound around the arch was smilax in honor of the New York Times wedding announcement I found for my great great grandmother’s wedding which read: “…They were married under an impromptu trellis of smilax…” It was her 105 yr old cathedral length veil that I wore down the aisle! As a gift that morning, Kurt sent to my cabin a compass engraved with our initials and the exact coordinates of our ceremony spot.

In lieu of bridesmaids I gave all my lifelong-soulmate-sister-friends a similar necklace: an arrowhead edged in gold. The arrowhead became one of the thematic elements of design that Amber wove into all the magic she created for the weekend. As a wedding coordinator, I understand the timeline benefits of doing a first look. As a traditionalist and a romantic, we wanted to see each other for the first time as I came over the hill. Turning the corner with my dad as we hit the top of the aisle, and with the most perfect timing in the world, our friends launched into the full voice chorus of “Feels Like Home”- Neil Diamond. I closed my eyes and thought my heart was going to explode with the joy of standing in the middle of the most important people in our lives, and when I opened them – there was Kurt waiting for me. Rather than traditional readings, we asked select friends and family to write on the subjects of “family”, “marriage” and “faith” for the heart of our ceremony. Two of our aunts joined us in a wine ceremony “Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other’s cup, but drink not from one cup.”

From the Groom…The whole weekend was so amazing but I’d probably say it was walking up to the top of the hill with all of our guests following, my parents by my side and a bagpiper leading the way. Each step I took, I knew I was one step closer to being married to Hannah. It was a moment that was full of electricity for me. I was so excited to see her. To give her a ring. To say I do!

From the Bride…During cocktail hour guests were able to see on display, the wedding quilt our families made. It is tradition in my family that when a woman gets married, the other women of her family as well as her future husband’s all needle point one square of a quit. It was assembled by a quilt maker in my native Pennsylvania. Guest found their seats via a seating chart- a leather hide handwritten in copper, hung from a arch built by Kurt.

We danced our first dance to “Leather and Lace” sung by two friends of ours. SBB Gourmet put forth an amazing family style meal at tables adorned with rambling eucalyptus, various vegetables, wood stumps, gourds, lanterns, candles, antlers, pampas grass, ferns and taxidermy by Sweet Emilia Jane and The Little Branch. Kurt and I spray painted everything we could find in copper- including the table numbers which were Bulliet Bourbon bottles collected by friends. The tables were topped off with cutting board menus by Amber Moon Design. We drank ‘Bourbon Bucks’ and wine from our favorite ‘Chronic Cellar Wines’ of which we are members, in Borrowed Blu’s incredible glassware with her hand foraged teak and brass flatware. Other tables were accented by a few copper sequins and splashes of blue from La Tavola Linens (a girl can’t help herself!). Awards were given out for best cabin decoration and best denim and plaid attire. We danced until we sweat it all out thanks to Red Shoe LA under and antler chandelier dripping with more smilax.

As a coordinator I am asked all the time for tips on how to navigate what is sure to be an overwhelming journey. 1) Each of you separately write a list of 5 things you must have and 5 things you don’t want as part of your wedding. Come together to see how much of your list aligns. Then come up with your master list. Keep coming back to this as you venue hunt and interview vendors. Don’t get distracted by things that, at the core, are not important to either of you as it can be easy to lose sight. 2) You’ll never regret what you invested into your wedding. You will regret where you cut corners 3) Oh, and always hire a coordinator!!!!! We were deeply grateful to work with vendors who are so talented, responsible and some of my very favorite colleagues- and we were sure to thank them during toasts. Of course the Day of Gal team gets a special shout out from me!

The Dreamiest Wedding in Italy

If you found yourself on the hunt for the dreamiest wedding in Tuscany, this is it. A cross-contentntal love story that came full circle under the Tuscan sun and we’ve got SAVVY EVENT STUDIO and Ben Moore to thank for every beautiful detail sitting in The Vault!

MustWatch_swash-01

From the Couple…What do you get when a boy from Nottingham, UK meets a girl from New York City? Robin from the ‘hood! And so this cross-continental love story between a forest boy and a gritty urban girl all began on a little app called Tinder, on the mystical island of Hong Kong.

After “swiping right” and matching with each other on Tinder in March of 2014, we cautiously met for after work drinks at Mario Batali’s Italian rooftop bar in the middle of Central, Hong Kong. By the time we met, we had both been through some arduous blind date dinners and were nearly ready to delete app completely.

What we both thought was going to be a quick drink turned into a moonlight dinner accompanied by the silly nonsensical banter exchanged between two people who speak very different variations of the otherwise common “English” language — for over six hours. We were both very surprised about how well we got on and also how very different we thought the other would be based solely on our Tinder profile photos. Insert the old adage “don’t judge a book by its cover”!

But what really cemented us was a life-changing moment in Lisa’s life. Just six months into our relationship, Lisa’s father unexpectedly passed away. As we are both thousands of miles away from home with no family nearby, Lisa needed strong support, patience and love and Paul stepped up to the challenge without a second thought. Still just early into the relationship, it was a true test for both of us; one that could have easily and understandably overtaken us.

Over the weeks and months, Paul took care of Lisa and made sure she was eating regularly, cradled her when she cried. Moreover, he took on Lisa’s greatest passion for photography (www. Wanderandlust.com) as his own so that she could keep that connection with her late-father, who was also an avid photographer.

From the Bride…Ever since my father handed me his old Nikon FM2 for my beginner photography class in high school, I would come home year after year to show him new stills of the world through the lens he passed on to me.

Having escaped the Nanking Massacre in his hometown at the age of four, survived through the Great Leap Forward in his 20’s, run from the Cultural Revolution and persecution by Mao’s Red Guards in his 30’s and then emigrating to the United States in his 40’s with nothing but a suitcase of clothing and books, my dad did not have many happy memories. But those moments that gave him warmth, and perhaps every now and then made him laugh, were carefully documented with his camera and filed into one of his photo archives.

With 50 years of age between us, photography was the only joy we truly shared. The time we spent over our photos (he with his printed albums and I with my iPad) was when we, but for mere moments, overcame the vast cultural divide between us.

We would spend hours going through his film snaps neatly arranged in albums and the colorful stories that came with them. Trekking Yellowstone Park’s forest trails in the 1970’s, shooting faces and NYC street scenes in the 1980’s, documenting family trips to Disney and Shanghai in the 1990’s.

As my dad hit his late-70’s, he became less and less mobile and even the lightest of DSLR cameras became too heavy to tote around. I carried the torch now: grainy film black and whites for high school – 1990’s, grinning friends acting older than our age – 2000’s, vibrant cities and varied landscapes – 2010’s. While his body slowed with age, his eyes continued to dance as if he were the one behind the lens, traversing through endless scenes in search of that perfect shot.

For months after my dad passed away, I kept my camera locked away in my dresser; we both laid as still as the moments it used to so avidly capture.

Paul picked up all these broken pieces and helped me rebuild my life and the shared passion I have with my father. He purchased his own equipment and planned weekend trips for us to explore new cities around us. Slowly, day after day, I began to heal and feel happiness creep back into my life.

I know that somewhere, somehow he’s reviewing this latest camera roll — the one capturing the best day of our lives — and feeling the warmth of the Tuscan sun and the beaming love of two united families.

From the Maid of Honor (who captured our love story so well and brought everyone to tears with her speech)… A bit of history — Lisa and I met in junior high. Not only was she my friend, but she protected me as a sister would, and many times at her own expense. I could share a million stories but I’ll share just this one-

Lisa and I took the train together to school every day. One morning, at the foot of the stairs, we heard the train pulling in. She flew up the stairs and I huffed and puffed my short legs after her. By the time I reached the top, she was already on the train. As the doors closed she stuck out her arms and leg to hold them open, completely ruining her outfit. But she pressed on, shoved the doors open and pulled me in. And as we were plastered against the doors, she somehow managed to pull an oil blotting tissue from her bag and started to blot my face. If that’s not love, I don’t know what is.

Along the same vein, I attempted to show my love for her when I wore my superman T-shirt and superman ring to threaten to beat a girl up who was spreading lies about Lisa. True story–even the T-shirt part. Our friendship was basically cemented in stone from then on.

Though our lives led us to different colleges, jobs and cities, Lisa remained my close friend, never judging, always listening, always loving.

When Lisa called to tell me she was engaged, I felt what probably many sisters felt to hear that kind of news–joy, relief, and overwhelming excitement. But most of all, I felt pride — for reasons I will explain in a bit.

But first, some honesty — when Lisa first told me about Paul, I think my exact words were ‘I give him 3 months…’

Don’t get me wrong, it had nothing at all to do with Paul. What’s not to like about him? First of all, he’s from the UK, which means he has an English accent, which pretty much immediately puts you on any American girls’ scoreboard! She said he was tall, kind, funny, had a great job and big hands… And you know what they say about big hands… Big hands = big gloves. Big gloves for the best hugs! But still, I had my doubts and here’s why.

I believe that in order to fall in love, you must first learn to love yourself. Lisa grew up in NYC — arguably the best city to learn how to do just that. But over 20+ years, I witnessed Lisa time and time again, leave herself on the bottom of her love-list. I, myself, have been guilty of being on the constant receiving end of her love.

You see, Lisa taught me how to be loved, which in turn allowed me to open my heart to Josh, my husband—and now we have a beautiful son together. Naturally, I wanted the same for Lisa, so it broke my heart when she nonchalantly said at my wedding, ‘I’m never gonna find the one.’ Two months later, enter Paul.

Prior to meeting Paul, his name was just ‘the Brit’ — I couldn’t be bothered with dedicating his name to memory since I was sure he had a 3-month shelf life. But within hours of actually meeting Paul, watching them together, I noticed a distinct shift in Lisa. She was visibly relaxed, always laughing and truly happy. He woke up at dawn 2-mornings of our short 4-day Halong Bay cruise without a complaint because Lisa wanted to take photos of the sunrise. In the streets of Vietnam, she held his hand and scurried behind him as he walked swiftly through the crowds. I’d never seen that balance of power in Lisa’s previous relationships…Perhaps this Brit did have some staying power.

Sadly, Lisa’s father unexpectedly passed in the fall of 2014. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that Paul made the trip with Lisa to provide support. As I watched Lisa quietly weep for her loss, I wanted nothing more than to put that superman T-shirt back on and shield her from whatever was hurting her. I ran to give her a hug but when I got to her, Paul already had his arms around her and she was clinging to the back of his pants, the way a little girl would her father. Lisa had finally found her real superman.

Paul, thank you for loving Lisa as she is, and for opening her heart, something many have tried but all have failed until now. I never thought of it as the impossible, but knew it would take someone truly special to do. I hope you will always cherish her and know that though she’s strong, you have her heart–she is vulnerable.

Lisa, I could not be happier for you. I am so proud that you finally learned to love yourself enough to be unconditionally loved by this man. As I wrap up this unnecessarily long speech, I’ll leave you with this quote–“I no longer believed in the idea of soul mates, or love at first sight. But I believed that a very few times in your life, if you were lucky, you might meet someone who was exactly right for you. Not because he was perfect, or because you were, but because your combined flaws were arranged in a way that allowed two separate beings to hinge together forever.

10 Things To Do if You’re Not Going to a Halloween Party This Weekend

I think it’s safe to say that I won’t be going to any Halloween parties this year. With a growing baby bump, I’ll be trading in the booze for plain old boos and I’m totally content doing so. But truthfully? That’s sort of my attitude every year when it comes to Halloween parties! Looking for an alternative to the costume party craziness, too? Here are 10 replacements that are just as good, if not better.

Peek Inside a Home that has that Cozy, Lived In Look down to a Science

It may be the plethora of plants or the abundance of lounge-worthy nooks and reading spots but this home is the poster child for cozy cottage. Take a cue from its many pretty vignettes for giving your home that perfectly easy, never fussy yet totally gorgeous lived in look. Plus pore through the full space captured by Nancy Ray Photography right here.

Moving in together after we got married was really fun. When we got married, we were in the middle of renovating our little home. Believe it or not, when we got back from our honeymoon, my parents picked us up from the airport and we moved right in with them!

It wasn’t ideal, but it was a major blessing. Our house still had two months until it was going to be complete, and with both of our parents living in Raleigh, it felt silly to try and find a place to rent for only two months.

When we finally moved into our renovated house, it immediately felt like home. After two years of decorating, finalizing projects, and making it ours, it still feels like home. What we have learned most through this project is that stuff doesn’t make a house a home.

Blending our two styles was really fun and easy because knowing what we know, we didn’t take it so seriously. After planning a wedding together, we had a good understanding of each other’s style and what we wanted our house to look and feel like.

We wanted to fill our home with things that we love, or that remind us of what we love. We both love the ocean, which is why our home is filled with images and a color palette that reminds of us it–neutrals mixed with bold textures and cool colors.

We also both love to be outside, which is why we tried to bring outside in as much as we could–yes, I’ve become an indoor plant lady and I love it! I believe that there are no rules when it comes to designing or decorating your home.

Fill it with what both of you love! Mix patterns and textures and play around with a color palette until you make it work! The effort is worth it for both of you to come home to place that feels like a place of rest and comfort.

A Modern, Minimalist Barn Wedding

Let me just say, this isn’t your average barn wedding. It’s a rustic, Texas-set celebration that took a “less is more approach” for a minimalist look we absolutely love. Their venue, an all-white barn with stunning windows and natural light galore, was pretty much a photographer’s dream and you can see the results from the lens of Jessica Gold.

Colors
Styles
Rustic

From the Bride…When we started planning our wedding, I knew we wanted an organic, natural and simplistic theme. We found the White Sparrow Barn and it was everything I imagined and more. Having the all-white background made the decoration process easy. It was like having a blank canvas. Not only did we go with the natural style we originally wanted, but minimal decoration was needed with a venue that gorgeous. We decided to go with neutral colors – light grey for the bridesmaids and charcoal for the groomsmen. Color was minimal with pops of pinks, wine red, and gold in the florals and of course, lots of greenery.

My favorite moment from the day was hands down our first look! We went back and forth whether being traditional or doing a first look was right for us and for our day. Looking back, we are both so glad we decided to share a first look. There is something so intimate and special with the first time you see each other on the wedding day; we wanted to have that moment just be the two of us. And I mean come on- first look’s make STUNNING pictures! We were able to have some time together before the ceremony to see each other, share happy tears, read through our vows and calm each other’s nerves. When we shared with others about our first look plans, we got the response of ‘isn’t that going to ruin the moment when you walk down the aisle?’ It totally doesn’t! In fact, it made the remainder of the evening all the more better. First looks aren’t for everyone but they are totally worth thinking about!

The most important thing we wanted for our wedding was just to enjoy the day and have time to spend together. While planning, so many people told me ‘you won’t even have time to eat your cake’ or ‘you’ll be talking to your guests instead of enjoying yourself.’ I didn’t want this! My husband and I set our priorities for our wedding day ahead of time, which turned out to be really beneficial. Our main priority was to meet with our guests at the very beginning of the reception so we could spend the remainder of the night on the dance floor with our friends and family. Our day was exactly what we made it and we wouldn’t have done it any other way.

My advice for the future bride is three things. 1. Trust your vendors. Choose vendors that match your style and let them do their part of the work! 2. Ask questions. Planning a wedding is hard work! Ask your vendors questions, even if it doesn’t pertain to their specialty. My photographer, Jessica, introduced me to vendors, helped plan the timeline of our wedding day, and joyfully answered countless emails about general wedding day questions. 3. ENJOY YOUR WEDDING DAY. Once your day hits, take a deep breath and know that everything is going to run smoothly. Spend time with your family, friends and most importantly, your husband. When you look back, you are only going to remember the sweet moments, the happy tears, the fun and the joy of a new marriage.

Elegance Was the Goal of This Backyard Wedding in the Hamptons

If you thought backyard weddings were a bore, think again because this sweet ceremony planned by Duke + Van Deusen is here to prove you wrong. Because not only did these sweethearts marry infront of a rose garden, the bride incorporated traditional in an incredible feat and folded 1,000 paper cranes to hang from the alter. It’s entertainment meets easy elegance and we’ve got every bit of beauty that unfolded underneath the Sperry Tents reception captured by Meg Miller Photography waiting in The Vault!

From the Bride…When I was 8 years old I was a flower girl in my Grandma’s wedding. She got married in front of the rose garden at my parent’s house in Quogue, NY. I always thought that wedding was perfect, and the rose garden was the perfect place to get married.

My husband, Byron, and I met at Gaffney’s, a bar in Saratoga Springs after the Travers Horse Race in 2011. I was there was some of my friends from Skidmore and he was there with a group of childhood friends. Hurricane Irene had just started and I was trying to get all of my friends to leave the bar before the storm escalated, but no one else seemed concerned so I went inside to get out of the rain and ended up sitting down next to Byron, who claims he’d been eyeing me from across the room.

Three years later, at the top of the tram in Jackson Hole. Wyoming, Byron popped the question. We celebrated our engagement at the top of the mountain with ice cold champagne that had been hidden in the snow earlier by a friend.

Back in Brooklyn, we started planning our wedding and I was thrilled to find out that Byron loved the idea of getting married in front of the rose garden at our house in Quogue as much as I did. We wanted our wedding to feel like an intimate, backyard wedding, despite the fact that we were inviting over 200 guests. With a year and half to plan our wedding, we enlisted the help of Duke and Van Deusen to help us make our vision a reality.

We didn’t want our ceremony to be too serious, but instead more fun and personal. Byron walked down the aisle with his mom and our cocker spaniel, Coco. We asked a family friend officiate (the same friend who had officiated my grandmother’s wedding, 21 years ago) and my uncle played guitar. My mom walked me down the aisle to “April Come She Will,” by Paul Simon, a song that had always been a family favorite. Byron and I wrote and recited our own vows and my mom read a passage from one of my favorite childhood books. Based on a Japanese tradition that is supposed to teach a bride patience, I folded 1000 white paper cranes which hung from our altar.

As the chef and owner of a farm to table catering company, Pickle and Link, I wanted to incorporate local produce into the floral décor, an idea that Ovando, our florist, executed perfectly. At dinner, all of the centerpieces were made up of flowers and potted herbs. The head table had a runner of eggplant, artichokes and cabbage. I hand wrote our guests names on all of the place cards which were then tied to a piece of rosemary.

Keeping with the backyard wedding vibe we had created, for dinner we had a family style BBQ by chef Peter Ambrose, complete with a whole roasted pig, cedar plank smoked bass and heaping amounts of creamy mac and cheese, so delicious that even I, the bride, made time to sit down and eat!

Our band, Eturnity Star, was so amazing that every wedding guest was on the dance floor from the moment they entered our amazing Sperry Tent. I was very lucky that my good friend and photographer, Meg Miller was there to capture the whole thing!

From the Bride… Jim and I met in a rec soccer league here in NYC. Over the summer of 2012, we both signed up as individuals and were placed on the same team. About six months later, we started dating secretly, not wanting to get our teammates involved. It didn’t last long before we were eventually caught stealing kisses at the bar after games. A few months later, I tore my ACL during one of our games. Jim, my knight in shining armor, swept me up into his arms and carried me off the field, only then to be greeted with the true challenge of carrying me up all four flights of stairs of my East Village walk up apartment. It was in this moment, and the weeks following my surgery that I knew I had found someone special. I was at my weakest and most vulnerable, and there he was, only a few months into our relationship, nursing me back to heath, carrying my bags as I crutched around the city, hailing cabs, cooking dinner, and just keeping me from wallowing in self-pity.

In July 2014, we planned a weekend getaway to Charleston to celebrate Jim’s birthday. We flew out of NYC at the crack of dawn and headed straight to Middleton Place, a plantation I’d wanted to see just outside of town. We leisurely walked the grounds, and finally decided to take a break from the sweltering heat and humidity on a bench by the lake. Jim started getting all sappy as we chatted, which I thought was due to his turning a year older. Suddenly, he was down on one knee asking me to marry him. I was so utterly shocked, that I was able to say yes, but couldn’t speak for the next 5-10 minutes. We giddily walked around the rest of the grounds, and before leaving, a random girl walks up to us and asks if we just got engaged. We answered yes, and she continues, first apologizing for maybe appearing to be creepy, and then admitting that she saw the whole thing happen from across the lake because she was watching an alligator. Said alligator was apparently less than 10 feet away from us the entire time. She offered to send us her photos, and sure enough, there it was!

We knew we wanted to have a longer engagement; I needed to finish my thesis, and we wanted to actually enjoy the planning process instead of rushing through everything. We ended up being engaged for almost two years before tying the knot. As for the wedding planning process, we knew we wanted to get married outside, so this was our sole starting point. I’ve known of Dunaway Gardens for years – one of my bridesmaids got married there. We researched and visited locations around NYC, but nothing felt right or compared to the image of Dunaway in my head. When we went to visit my family in Georgia for Christmas, we scheduled a tour of the grounds. Even in the dead of winter, we knew that this was going to be our place. The unrestrained nature and history of the grounds (it was a theatre retreat in the 1920s), especially the enchanting intimacy of the hanging gardens were exactly what we were looking for.

We used the venue as our inspiration for the details of our wedding. We knew it would be lush and green in late April, and we picked soft, pastel colors, greens, and metallics as our loose color palette to complement our already gorgeous surroundings. We wanted the day to feel natural, intimate, and ethereal, with nature and twinkling lights and stars as our witnesses. One of our best decisions was a family style dinner of delicious, Southern style food. We chose to have a live band because our friends and family love to dance and party, so we needed everyone to have a good meal beforehand. My dad built the head table for us – a beautiful and sentimental touch. We can’t wait to use it in our house one day. Mary McLeod did an amazing job of bringing the gardens into the reception tent, creating magnificent chandeliers out of greenery, which were one of the few things I asked for specifically from her. The day before the wedding, my mom, bridesmaids, and I spent about an hour or two creating herb bundles (and drinking champagne!) that served as the escort cards.

I remember during the ceremony forcing myself to keep looking out into the crowd and trying to make eye contact with as many people as possible. It made the ceremony feel more intimate and kept me from getting too nervous. As Jim and I exited the ceremony down this huge flight of stairs, I remember finally getting down to the bottom, realizing we actually did it, and him picking me up and swinging me around before our wedding party followed us out. Those simple moments of pure happiness are some of the most memorable to me.

One of my favorite moments of the reception was my dance with my father. I wasn’t allowed to know what song he selected, but I knew we were the last of the “dances”. The music began, and he started talking about how Brad and Janet had a pretty good love story and made it through a crazy time (for anyone that doesn’t know, Brad and Janet are the couple who end up trapped at the mansion in The Rocky Horror Picture Show). We danced the first bit of “The Time Warp” together, and suddenly the crowd closes in, all in sunglasses, hiding my dad from view. Next thing I know, he is in a crazy mad scientist wig. Everyone is laughing, dancing, and singing – I couldn’t have imagined a more fitting or better way to start the party.

It was so special to have people from all walks of our lives at the same huge party, from childhood besties and family friends. Our lives had come full circle, together.

From Charleston Weddings… When we first visited the newly restored and redressed Gibbes Museum of Art, we were blown away by the majestic architecture, grand sense of space inside and out, and fabulous art collection. The Campbell Rotunda (so named for the stained glass dome that tops it) sculpture gallery particularly struck us and we know brides and grooms hosting weddings there were in for epic memories. Taking a cue from the Edwardian period when the museum first opened its stylish doors to patrons, we brought the season’s most timeless gowns here to harken the era where colorful laces, layered luxe fabrics, hand- embroidered veils, and jewels upon jewels reigned. From Ruby and RoseSivan and Jeremy had very large families they wanted to include in the wedding, so the challenge from the beginning was to find a venue that could accommodate a large number guests and yet still feel intimate and personal. Sivan grew up in the oceanside town of Pacifica and the couple was really drawn to the natural beauty of the coast. With its dramatic rocky cliffs, wind-swept wildflowers, and waves crashing in the background, the Ritz at Half Moon Bay made the perfect setting for their celebration.

We pulled inspiration from all of those beachy Northern California elements to create a design that felt romantic, summery and elegant without being too formal. Anna Hoffman of Loop Event Arts artfully combined Fuchsia bougainvillea, deep purple Clematis, raspberries, blush toned dahlias and garden roses, eucalyptus, olive, succulents and air plants, which created a gorgeous contrast to the natural setting outside and neutral palette inside the reception space. To make things feel more intimate, we designed three large loose wreaths of greenery that filled in the space and also beautifully framed the head table.

One of my favorite details is the envelope liner from their invitation suite from Bella Figura – a pale blue watercolor wash which gave it that perfectly romantic, ethereal beachy vibe we wanted to capture.

From the Bride…I could always picture “being married” to Jeremy but not “getting married” to Jeremy. But after finding our perfect venue near where I grew up, I could start to picture our wedding day!

When planning our wedding, it was important to us to honor our families and blend our Jewish and Persian traditions, work with talented vendors that could capture and enhance who we are and what we love, and delight our guests with fantastic food and mind-blowing music.

The Pros + Cons of Having Kids At Your Wedding

When it comes to hashing out the details of the big day, every couple has to make the guest list decision: kids welcome or adults only? It’s not always an easy question to answer, and today we’re weighing the factors to consider on both sides of the coin to help you make the choice that best fits your wedding vision. Grab your pro/con list and let’s get to it…

[dotted]

CON: Meltdown Potential

We’ve all been there. A couple is right in the middle of exchanging their heartfelt vows, or the Father of the Bride is delivering a tear-jerking toast, only to be interrupted by a kid who’s in the middle of a full-blown meltdown. With littles on the guest list, big life moments could be met with unexpected tantrums.

[dotted]

[dotted]

PRO: Treasured Moments

If you’ve got important kiddos in your life, you’ll likely always remember including them on your wedding day. Whether it’s sweet hugs from the flower girls or stealing a kiss from the ring bearer, they’re once-in-a-lifetime moments you’ll treasure long after the big day comes and goes.

[dotted]

[dotted]

CON: Not Their Scene

Many couples look at their wedding as a chance to host the ultimate party, and that may not include kiddos running wild. Kids can struggle to keep occupied during the ceremony and can grow frustrated being told to stay in their seats. Instead, you could use your no-kids wedding as an opportunity for parents to book a babysitter, let loose, and enjoy a night out.

[dotted]

[dotted]

PRO: Kids Table Can Be Cool

There are a million fun ideas to deck out your kids’ table with everything they’ll love. From coloring books to sweet treats to bubbles and more, they can have a great time even if the toasts or first dance don’t hold their attention.

[dotted]

[dotted]

CON: Receptions Aren’t Playgrounds

Let’s face it, black tie events and tiny humans don’t often mix well. It’s best to look at the formality of your wedding and ask yourself, “Would children be able to enjoy this event?” If your wedding is an upscale, open bar affair continuing way past bedtime, the answer is probably no.

[dotted]

[dotted]

PRO: Kids Add Life to the Party

On the flip side, no one gets a party started like kids on the dance floor. If you’re planning a more casual, family-style celebration, you probably wouldn’t dream of not including those littles you love most.

[dotted]

[dotted]

CON: Additional Headcount Costs

Every guest (young and old) means added numbers on the headcount and another seat at the dinner table. Plus, do you really want your wedding budget going towards their gourmet meal when they’d rather dine on chicken nuggets and fries?

[dotted]

[dotted]

PRO: Babies in Bow Ties

Kids on the guest lists equals babes dressed to the nines. You won’t be able to handle the cuteness when you see how darling your tiniest guest look on the big day.

A Classic Southern Affair Filled with Elegant Details

When it came time to plan their big day, (familiar faces) Ana and Tim had one goal in mind. That being? A glamorous winter wonderland that their guests would remember forever. And we’ve got to hand it to them because mission totally accomplished. From the candle-lit reception to the personalized slippers guests were given to dance the night away, Jacqui Cole Photography captured it all to share in The Vault!

MustWatch_swash-01

From Jacqui Cole PhotographyYou may remember Ana and Tim from their engagement session featured here on SMP. Ana met Tim, a professional tennis player, at the Four Seasons Resort while Tim was in town for a tennis tournament. The couple wed 2 years later at the exact spot which they had fell in love.

Ana and Tim wanted to capture a glamorous winter wonderland at the Four Seasons venue. They wanted to create an evening that all of their guests would remember. The many ‘wow’ factors certainly achieved that! From a surprise mariachi band, confetti bombs, fireworks show and a late night taco stand the couple created an incredibly fun night for their family and friends. Ana said that “it was a dream come true to see our vision of an elegant, romantic, candle-lit winter wonderland come to life with all our closest family and friends. The whole day is a memory of overwhelming love and happiness”. Guests were treated to little surprises such as personalized slippers to dance the night away and a Mexican candy bar which were a ‘sweet nod’ to Ana’s heritage.

The reception decor was extraordinary, There were no details that were overlooked. From draped columns, floral covered entryways, mirrored facades, flower halos and beautiful centerpieces. Flowers draped everywhere with the focal point being the floral chandelier which hovered over the dance floor. The guests entrance was covered in stunning white flowers. The white roses were suspended from the top of the windows to make it seem like they were floating.

Ana and Tim left hand in hand under an aisle of confetti. They jetted off to Napa to enjoy their honeymoon the very next day. We wish them all the love in the world! Congratulations Mr and Mrs Smyczek!

From the Bride… After the proposal, which you can read all about here, as we began the wedding planning, the first and most important thing for us was the location and venue for our big day. We wanted to get married somewhere that was special and meaningful for us so where better than where we very first met – The Four Seasons in Dallas, which also happens to be my home town and where we got engaged! I’ve always dreamed of having an elegant and romantic wedding with a candle-lit ambiance to create an intimate and cozy feel. The time of year we got married, a chilly November day, was the perfect way to turn my wedding dream into a timeless winter wonderland.

Looking back at our wedding day, my heart is overwhelmed with countless moments but there is one moment that will stay with me forever – my Father-Daughter dance. It started with a tearful slow song and towards the end of the song, much to my fathers surprise, we transitioned to a fun Spanish song with confetti showering the entire dance floor! The confetti was such a special moment, giving my dad and I another moment to celebrate together as we opened up the dance floor for the festivities to begin!

The best advice I can give any bride-to-be would be to enjoy and cherish every moment – from the moment you say “yes!” to the moment you say “I do”. A fun tip for the big day; as Mr. and Mrs., take a moment to look around at your reception, to embrace how the vision of your big day all came together and to see all of your loved ones together in one place celebrating you!

This Vintage-Inspired Glam-Fest is Absolutely Perfect

Guy and Allison really know how to throw a wedding. And not just any wedding – a completely glamorous, vintage-inspired love-fest smack-dab in the heart of St. Louis. Think a sophisticated color palette, luxe details from Rogue Events and Design and perfectly crafted florals from Stems. All captured in mesmerizing images by Erin Stubblefield, this is sooo worthy of a trip to THE VAULT.  See you there.

From the Bride… I will never forget the moment Guy kneeled down and pulled out what can only be described as the most beautiful vintage engagement ring a girl could hope for. From the moment we met I knew he was an old soul and from the very beginning our love had a timeless quality that seemed to transcend generations. The first time I saw his charming smile at a University of Missouri football tailgate hosted by his fraternity my freshman year of college I knew he was the one… my old soulmate! We fell fast and hard for each other in a whirlwind of laughter and selfless companionship. It didn’t take long for me to realize that Guy had become my best and truest friend. On our third anniversary, Guy asked me to be his wife – and the rest is history!

We took our vintage-inspired engagement photos on The University of Missouri campus where our love story began. We were enamored with how classic and ageless the photos turned out and decided to stick with our elegant vintage theme from then on. It was important to us that our wedding guests felt as if they had been transported back in time to an age of elegance and glamour, but with every comfort of the modern day. We toured nearly every historical venue in St. Louis looking for the perfect places to celebrate our marriage. Rooted in our traditional values, The Old Cathedral of St. Louis, which was built in 1834, was an obvious choice for our Catholic marriage ceremony. Father Dennis Stehly, a Monsignor from my childhood parish, agreed to preside and The Rosewood Ensemble, a string quartet and vocalist, created the perfect quintessential ambiance for our friends and family. Portraits of my deceased grandfathers were displayed near the altar, which was a special touch that made me and my family feel as if they were there with us. I had never felt more beautiful in my life than I did on that day thanks to Bliss Beauty Bar and my doting bridesmaids! While waiting with my dad for our double door entrance into the Cathedral, I will never forget telling him how I felt nothing but excitement in that moment – I had zero nerves!

Speaking of my dad, he surprised us with a vintage Rolls Royce to ride away in! The rest of our wedding party and families rode to the reception in a trolley. First, we stopped at The St. Louis Public Library – where all of the greatest love stories are kept. As wedding gifts to each other we had exchanged small leather bound books where we had written 100 things we loved about each other… so this photo destination was the perfect choice. Out of nowhere, it started to rain (which Guy said he was thankful for because he had heard it meant good luck for newlyweds)! Our cocktail hour and reception were held at St. Louis Union Station Hotel, which first opened in 1894 and is now respected as a National Historic landmark. The Grand Hall, where we held our reception, boasts 65-foot ceilings and a beautiful stained glass Tiffany and Co. masterpiece above the double staircase. Another one of our favorite memories of that night was waiting to be announced with our bridal party at the bottom of those stairs. I have known all of my bridesmaids since I was in preschool and Guy’s relationships with his groomsmen can be described as nothing short of brotherhood. It was then, in that moment, that we looked at each other and knew how impossibly blessed we were to have them and each other.

The reception space took my breath away when I saw it for the first time. A specialty table featuring childhood photos of Guy and me in gold frames was a special touch that I’m glad we included. STEMS Florist not only supplied us with impeccable bouquets, boutonnieres, and corsages, but also created incredibly beautiful centerpieces with ivory and champagne roses and rosettes. It was important to us that our guests were able to see each other across the table and enjoy each other’s company – so we decided on tall gold candelabras and short trio arrangements alternating throughout the space. The room was sprinkled with candles in a variety of gold and mercury glass votives. Ivory linens, gold chargers, champagne overlays, and elegant place settings completed the tables. In lieu of wedding favors, we made donations in each guest’s name to The Alzheimer’s Association – a charity that is near and dear to our hearts (we both have had a grandparent affected by the disease). We used a photo book filled with vintage photos of St. Louis as our guest book – this was perfect because we now have it on our coffee table and can read well wishes and messages from our wedding guests whenever we’d like.

STEMS also supplied a gorgeous garland for our head table and the perfect cake topper for our wedding cake. We designed our wedding cake ourselves during a road trip to visit family a few months before the wedding and thanks to The Cakery Bakery our vision became a reality! Five tiers of sweet sugary goodness made with homemade vanilla – our cake featured a buttercream rosette base, two champagne tiers with delicate vintage piping, and two ivory tiers with gold ribbon. It tasted just as amazing as it looked! It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable four-course meal supplied by St. Louis Union Station. Guy was very involved in the tasting portion of our wedding planning and I have to admit that he did a fantastic job. In addition to a wonderful spread of cheeses and crackers, vegetables, fruits, and passed hors d’oeuvres during cocktail hour – the first course, a baby greens and fresh berry salad in a cucumber wrap with a maple vinaigrette, was served by white gloved waiters as a dazzling high-definition light show was projected on the arched ceilings of the venue. Looking around and seeing all of our closest friends and family in absolute awe as they stared up at the ceiling was the moment we knew that all of the planning had been one hundred percent worth it.

The St. Louis Big Band provided a jazz quartet to accompany our cocktail hour and a 20-piece ensemble for the reception. Guy, my dad, and I had taken dance lessons during the months leading up to the wedding and were excited to start the party off with the waltzes we had practiced for the past couple of weeks. Guy and I were serenaded by Joe Mancuso, the St. Louis Big Band wedding singer, who performed our song “All the Way” by Frank Sinatra. I loved the way my Oleg Cassini gown flowed as he spun me around the dance floor! My dad and I danced to The Missouri Waltz – the official state song of Missouri that is most often associated with our alma mater The University of Missouri. Last but not least, Guy and his mom picked things up with Ella Fitzgerald’s “Our Love is Here to Stay”.

Free flowing champagne and a top-shelf open bar fully stocked with cigars guaranteed a night full of never-ending conversation, fun and laughter. The band eventually switched over to a DJ, also supplied by the St. Louis Big Band, and ended with a late night Panera station. Katie from Rouge Events was the perfect coordinator and Erin Stubblefield Photography captured every priceless moment flawlessly. The whole day went by in the blink of an eye. We woke up the next day and suddenly the weekend’s events felt like a dream. The best part? I got to marry the love of my life! If I could give any advice to future brides, I would say don’t worry too much about being trendy, trends come and go but your love (and your wedding photos) are forever! Always imagine things from your guest’s point of views. If you’re like us and have a majority of your guests coming from out of town you want to make sure you are treating them to an unforgettable event that represents your values and tastes. Lastly, I highly recommend making your gifts to each other on that big day something personal and heartfelt. We will have those little leather books for the rest of our lives and can read them whenever we want or need to. Something like that means so much more than a store bought gift!
