A Timeline for Pulling off the Perfect Cocktail Party

Never let the stress and overflowing to-do list of throwing a cocktail party deter you again. With a simple timeline straight from the mouth of an entertaining genius; you can hone in on effortless entertaining. Darcy Miller is sharing tips and tricks for pulling off your best ever cocktail party. Really it all boils down to preparation and fun details. Read up on her partying to-do’s and for more entertaining secrets check out her new and beautifully adorned book, Celebrate Everything.

From Darcy Miller… Throwing a cocktail party is a great way to mingle with friends much more naturally than at a sit-down dinner party. You can invite more guests because of this reason, too, and don’t need to worry so much about exact numbers. I always like to pick a theme to carry through the elements of the party and to personalize to the guest of honor or occasion, whether it’s New Year’s Eve or a class reunion. With that in mind, these are very general guidelines and of course, every tip and piece of advice below can be adapted to your priorities.

What to Do Ahead of Time

Brainstorm and Get Inspired

I start every party plan brainstorming about whatever or whomever I’m celebrating. I have a master inspiration list that asks every question from favorite color, food, book, signature style icon, the works. I use the answers to all these questions as jumping off points to inspire the party. These details are always helpful in deciding a theme, a color palette, the cake—everything! Its what makes each party different and memorable. For me, the best part of any party are the personal little details that feel really true to the person or people I am celebrating. For the friend who loves art, you can throw a Jackson Pollack party where everything is splattered paint from the cake to the invitations (you could even splatter canvas sneakers as an activity or favor, which is featured in my book!). Whether it’s having everyone show up wearing your sister’s signature red lipstick or having everyone bring their favorite pie—savory or sweet—for the baker amongst you, these are the things that really set your celebration apart.

Set Your Party Style & Location

Are you thinking Taco Tuesday in jeans at home or a jacket and tie soiree at a restaurant? As you begin to expand on your theme, think about a style, theme and color palette—one of the easiest ways to make your décor really stand out and feel cohesive is to focus on one or two colors (again, you can work in personal details here—what’s the guest of honor’s favorite color or what colors represent the event or season you’re celebrating?).

Get Organized Before You Start

Once you set your date, your timeline will start to fall into place. Keep it organized and make a checklist of everything you plan to do or people you need to hire (bartender, entertainment, etc.). Writing down everything you even might need is half the battle. Whether you’re someone who likes an excel spreadsheet, an online downloadable form or plain old pen and paper, your checklist will be your lifeline. And who doesn’t love crossing things off?

Set a Budget

Before you start making any financial decisions, figure out roughly how much you want to spend and set your budget 20% lower than that number so you avoid any last minute surprises. There are tons and tons of ways to make your party fun and special without looking like you’re skimping. Even timing can help—setting your cocktail party from 3:00 – 5:00 instead of later in the evening means that you don’t have to serve a full meal, for example, and a Tuesday evening cocktail party tends to be more low-key than one on Saturday night.

Make a Guest List

Figure out who and how many you want included—and anticipate your guests’ questions about plus ones or children being welcome before they are even asked. Make sure you have all the contact information you’ll need. Will you be sending out a paper invitation or going digital? Make sure you have those email addresses or mailing addresses.

A Few Weeks Before

Invite and Confirm Attendees

It’s important to get at least vague numbers as early as possible so you know approximately the size you’re planning for. Numbers matter for things like ordering the right amount of wine or making enough favors ahead of time if you’re going to have those. And no matter what, always order a few extra! You never know and there are always those guests who are able to show up last minute (although there are also people cancel last minute).

Make Sure Everything is Ordered & Arrange Additional Help

Anything that you know you need to order in advance (whether it’s calling a bakery ahead of time or renting extra chairs), it’s best to get those orders in place so you avoid rush delivery. Get price quotes for things that you’ll order closer to the date and make sure to make a schedule of pick-ups for after the party. It’s easier and easier these days to get things custom designed, from chocolates to coasters, but those shipments also take longer since everything is specially printed or designed for you. If you want have a special cocktail napkin with initials or a photo printed on it, that’s something that should be decided upon early.

Figure Out What You Will Be DIYing

You don’t have to be an expert crafter to DIY a few things. From making cookies and putting them in the freezer to filling bags with candy and tying them up, there are so many things that can be bought and put together in advance of the party. You can even make this a little get together of its own, inviting friends or family to help you DIT (Do-It-Together), which leads me into my next point.

Delegate and collaborate

Whether you’re having a baby shower with friends or celebrating your parents’ anniversary with family, it’s important to figure out who is helping and how. There are so many ways people can help (and DIT!), from putting together favors to baking a cake. Collaborating will not only get the job done faster and easier, but it makes the process fun, too. Though the party itself is the focus, the memories made putting it together can be just as enjoyable.

Plan Your Menu

For cocktail party, figure out if you’re planning on serving passed hors d’oeuvres, a full buffet, just a few strategically placed snacks or some combination. With that, decide if you are cooking, catering, buying prepared foods or maybe doing a little of each. Will you want elevated sophisticated bites, or something more familiar? No matter how elegant my cocktail parties are I always like to serve mini hot dogs!

Pick a signature cocktail

You can personalize the drink to the season, occasion or even color palette. Naming the cocktail adds even more personality; you can come up with something special from the ingredients, but even just giving it a name (Winter Whiskey Punch or Henry’s Hot Toddies…hint: alliteration always works!) will add a little detail to your menu. This makes it more thoughtful and you will save you the money of having a full bar.

Figure Out Favors

Favors are definitely optional when it comes to cocktail parties, but I always like to have a little something to make my guests feel special. You don’t have to go all out—personalizing chocolate bars or mini champagne bottles are great options. You can also use décor as double duty—have bud vases on the table all night that your guests can take home, or put small bags by the jars of candy to have your guests fill before leaving.

Make a Playlist

Music plays a big part in setting the tone for any party. Are you going to hire anyone like a band or a DJ? If so, you’ll need to book them. If not, it’s easy to make or find a playlist. With enough time a week before the event, maybe you send out an email to all of your guests taking requests!

Figure out How You’re Documenting Your Party

Whether you’re hiring a photographer or doing it yourself, documenting your party is important! If you’re going to hire a professional, set that up now. If you’re planning to use your own camera, make sure it’s working and charged. Make sure photos are taken the day of!

One Week Before

Follow Up with Guests

Check in with everyone on your guest list from whom you haven’t heard—and send reminders to everyone who has RSVP’d yes. This way you can finalize your guest lists.

Plan Smaller Ways to Personalize Your Party

Think about the little ways to add something special to the evening and to get your guests comfortable. If your guests don’t know each other—or even if they do, creating fun name tags or ice breaker games can get the party moving right from the start. This isn’t a must, but it’s a great way to add another element of personal detail to the event as well.

Think About Your Neighbors

If you’re in apartment building, knock on the next door and invite them. If you live in a neighborhood, give them a heads up that there will be cars parked in the street.

Check your Supplies

Everything from glasses to napkins to hand towels, make sure you have enough. If you are entertaining on a bigger scale than you usually do, make sure you’re extra prepared.

The Day Before

Think about what you’re wearing

With all the prep that comes with planning one’s own party, it’s easy to forget about how YOU will be enjoying the night! So you don’t have to worry about it last minute, take out what you’re going to wear the day before. If anything needs to be ironed or washed, you’ll have enough time to get all of that done. Twenty minutes before your guests arrive you might be lighting candles and putting out ice, so with your outfit already planned, you can get dressed at the last second and not worry about getting anything on your party outfit.

Check in with Guests

Another quick, “Can’t wait to see you tomorrow night!” email never hurt anyone and it will also get your guests in the mood to party!

Get your Last Minute Groceries

Go out for the last time and get everything you need, so you don’t have to go out again! Anything you plan to make beforehand or cleaning products or storage containers

Tidy Up

If you are having your party at home, clean up the area and make sure everything is in its place. Put out candles and make the space ready to party. No need to be doing that day of. I love having cocktail parties because it makes my apartment so nice!

Lay out your Table

Pull out serving platters, serving utensils and map out your table the day before. You can put post-its on your bowls and plates where the food will be, put out your cocktail napkins and glasses.

Arrange Flowers and Decor

Arrange your florals or have your flowers delivered – it’s always good to have a little time to see your room all set up in case you need to fill in anywhere. Just don’t forget to add more water the day of! I always like the way flowers look the day after I buy them!

Make Sure All Food and Beverages are All Set

Prepare any food, put wine or any beverages that need to be cool in the refrigerator. Grab some extra ice! If you need more space, you could have a tub with ice for any additional beverages.

Secure Payments

If you have outside helpers, make sure your set on how you’re paying them and make sure you have cash for tips.

The Day of

Be Ready

Trying to get as organized as possible at the beginning of the day, so that you’re ready when guests walk in. Take some pictures! Take some pictures so that you have a record of the space and you’ll remember it next time you’re having a party. It’s always fun to have your parties documented before guests arrived when everything looks perfect. Don’t forget to take pictures during as well!

Set the Mood

Crank up the music, light the candles, fluff the pillows—you know how to do this one! Relax! Have a glass of wine (or your cocktail of choice) before guests arrive—the more relaxed you are, the more comfortable your guests will feel.

The Prettiest Dress We’ve Ever Seen

This dress is a big deal. Because I swear I’ve looked at thousands of gowns in the ten years that I’ve been writing this blog and this gown just definitely makes the list for one of the prettiest I’ve ever seen. Definitely top five. And the bride just happen to choose the most gorgeous bridesmaids dresses EVER (Jenny Yoo, obvi) to compliment her chic, timeless with a twist style. From the Bride…Scott and I met in Chicago and were, at first, just friends. Three years after meeting, when the timing was right, our friendship became something more and we started dating. When we decided to get married two years later we didn’t know where we wanted the celebration to be held, but knew we wanted something unique. After exploring many ideas which included a family farm in Texas, Italy, Napa and even on board a vintage train, we opted for Chicago, the city where we lived and loved so much. Scott and I were so excited to host our friends and family in The Windy City which truly shines in the summer. We kicked off the weekend with all guests on a private Architectural Boat Tour, one of our favorite activities for out of town guests.

For our wedding ceremony, The Peninsula Hotel’s rooftop terrace was the most perfect setting which felt like garden of white florals and green succulents (thanks to Kehoe Designs) that was dropped in the middle of the city surrounded by skyscrapers. Though the attire was black-tie, the evening was relaxed and casual, but still elegant. Our good friend served as officiant and my grandparents read the Jewish traditions which we incorporated into our intimate ceremony.

After the ceremony, the terrace quickly transformed into cocktail hour where guests dined on dim sum, a homage to our first official date in Chinatown, before entering the ballroom for dinner and dancing. We wanted the evening to feel fun and personal. The fun was provided by Ken Arlen Orchestra which had guests on their feet all night with the last ones leaving at 4 AM. We personalized the night with custom candles in lieu of place cards, my favorite hometown ice cream Custard Cup, a Texas themed grooms cake from Bite Sized Baker, and late night Chicago style deep dish pizza and whiskey bar – the groom’s favorite. The night was captured perfectly by Emilia Jane Photography and John Hoel Videography. Guests left with a fortune cookie to finish off their dim sum which read, “A hangover is in your immediate future.

Blush + Blue Pair Up For This Beautiful Bash

Pink and blue may have you thinking babies (boy or girl!?) but when this darling hue duo paired up for this al fresco fete, it was pure love all around. From the florals by The Bloom Of Time to the beauty of Rancho Las Lomas in general, it was all perfectly on point – thanks to the talent behind Weddings by Susan Dunne. Hello Blue Photo captured it all for our lucky eyes – see more in our Vault right this way!

Al Fresco

From the Bride… When we visited Rancho Las Lomas we immediately fell in love with how gorgeous it is, with the Spanish style architecture surrounded by lush botanical gardens. One of our favorite things about the property is that it is also a wildlife foundation that is home to some unique animals, including a white tiger! The venue has so many little details that make it a beautiful and exciting place to explore and we knew that it was the perfect setting for our wedding.

After deciding to have our wedding at Rancho Las Lomas started on the details that would make our wedding special. When trying to decide on colors, I wanted to make sure that they harmonized well with the colors of the venue. Around Rancho Las Lomas there are beautiful painted tiles, lampposts, and cobblestones that inspired me to choose a dusty blue and blush pink color scheme. I wanted the flowers to be whimsical and romantic so I asked my florist to have things like berries and thistle mixed in for added color and texture.

When I was looking for a photographer, I had a certain style in mind, and when I found Christina from Hello Blue Photo I knew that she was the right choice. The way that Christina uses the natural light creates a soft and romantic look that I wanted for our wedding photos. She also uses both digital and film photography to beautifully capture her images. Looking back, one of the best things that happened on our big day was that we were able to stay relaxed and enjoy our time together because of Christina’s warm and friendly demeanor. Picking Christina as our photographer was definitely one of the best choices that we made!

This Very Merry Pink + Gold Holiday Party has the Perfect Creative Twist

Holiday parties are most likely filling up your social calendar this month but here’s an idea you might not have thought of before. Instead of your standard cookie exchange, why not throw a Creative Exchange party? The ladies of Lemiga Events and Amanda Jewel Floral + Design invited their talented friends over for a party that included creative projects to share. It’s genius and the sparkling pink and gold decor certainly pretty to look at. For more captured by Tulle & Grace, head to the vault.

Collaboration makes my heart sing! And when fabulous women get together, we make magic! Sort of like a Cookie Exchange party where everyone brings cookies to a holiday party, I planned a Holiday Creative Exchange Party were my talented friends brought a creative project to share.

We learned how to make a holiday arrangement, winter sangria, what makes a good cheese board, perfect holiday bows, and cookie decorating. Then we sipped cocktails and enjoyed lunch together.

A Dream Ballgown For a Beach Ceremony

If you’re under the impression that ballgowns and beach weddings don’t mix, this wedding will come as a pleasant surprise. The bride, Ashleigh wore her dream Lazaro dress for their toes-in-the-sand ceremony and Carrie King made magic happen behind the lens. Believe me, this is one gallery you can’t afford to miss.

From the Bride… Brian and I knew from the start of the wedding planning process that we wanted our wedding to have some very important key elements — not all of which were easy to accomplish simultaneously! We knew that we wanted our wedding to have a romantic and elegant feel while also making our guests feel at home at a spectacular party. After searching high and low from Europe to Mexico to the Caribbean, we were so fortunate to find a venue that was the ideal fit, Casa de Campo.

We were able to have a private toes in the sand ceremony, just as we had imagined for our dream wedding. Directly following, we hosted our reception in the town square of a beautiful cobblestone village on the resort property that makes you feel as if you’ve been transported back in time to 17th century Italy. It truly felt like we were living in a fairytale with the best part being that I got to marry my very own Prince Charming! We danced the night away under the stars with a local band that kept the party going until 3am. It was everything we hoped for and so much more.

The Dress: The first Lazaro gown I ever saw was in a bridal magazine. My 5 year old self decided that one day, when I got married, it would be in a Lazaro. When the time came to actually pick out my dream dress, I jumped into the hunt to find the perfect one by trying on every possible style and designer. After countless appointments from coast to coast, I finally tried on my first Lazaro gown at the Bridal Galleria in San Francisco. I had never worn anything that felt like such a complete expression of my personality. The asymmetrical lines, varied blush hues, intricate embellishments around the waist, and deep v-back all came together in such an artistic way. It was love at first sight! The icing on the cake is that I got to meet Lazaro and hear his vision for the gown. Such a dream come true.

Inspiration for the Fashion-Forward Bride

If you’ve never considered wearing a cape on your wedding day, this photo shoot is all the inspiration you’ll ever need. Photographed by Almond Leaf Studios and designed and planned in the hands of Emily Claire Events, it’s a fashion heavy, floral loving slice of pretty guaranteed to find a place on your Pinterest boards. Find even more to love inside The Vault.

From Emily, the planner and designer… We knew that we wanted our inspiration to be the chic Atlanta bride, so we included a mix of classic yet slightly modern details. Fashion is front and center here with the bride wearing a gorgeous Caroline Hayden gown, Oscar de la Renta earrings, and Christian Louboutin heels. We loved how structural the gown was and how the cape gently flowed across the staircase at the venue. If that cape doesn’t make you feel like a queen on your wedding day, then we don’t know what will!

Ivory satin linens, ghost chairs, and silver details set the stage for the fabulous tones in the flowers to shine through. Peonies, carnations, roses, and ranunculus play together beautifully as they cascade across the table. Every brides favorite shade of blush, peach, and ivory can be seen making an appearance!

Peek Inside a Home that’s Decking the Halls in the Most Glamorous of Ways

Amanda Gluck of The Fashionable Hostess truly lives up to her blog moniker. Each and every holiday, she pulls out all the stops for a home that literally sparkles with the season’s best. Peek inside her Miami abode decked out in Holiday glam. Even her office is getting in on the action. From bar cart to backyard, this home tour has the merry, merry vibes. See even more shot by Simply Lively here.

This winter I couldn’t wait to add some Holiday cheer to my home, starting right at the entry. I just love my new spiral topiaries from Frontgate and my festive wreaths from Grandin Road.

Then in my foyer you are greeted with a winter white theme; a gorgeous 7′ tall faux white tree from King of Christmas, which I decorated in all silver and white ornaments.

In my family room, I created a Holiday Bar Cart to greet guests. A bar cart is such an easy way to transform a party from average to festive. Welcome guests with a bar cart right at your entrance filled with a display of welcome drinks, or pull up your bar cart alongside your couch for an added side table display of nutcrackers and mini pine trees.

By placing this one in my family room, I had a fab new space to display an array of gold and glittery Holiday pieces. Shimmery nutcrackers, gold-rimmed glassware and limited edition Chandon made it perfectly elegant for the Holiday.

In my dining room I created a beautiful table runner of green garlands and candles, see the DIY in this Fashionable Hostess post.

Of course I never leave any space unattended to, so even in the powder room I added fresh guest linens, linen with beautiful ornament embroidery by Sferra and red roses in a crystal vase.

My guest bedroom was such a fun space to add holiday touches {and a great place to decorate since its filled with guests all Holiday season long!}. I replaced one of the mirrors on the wall and hung a wreath wright above the bed.

Then I opted for Boll & Branch’s plaid bedding for that cozy winter feel. I love their bedding because it’s organic. I am always sure to have a few extra throw blankets as well!

Last but not least I added the most gorgeous frosted garlands from Frontgate to our patio. Miami winters are actually the best time to be outside with the cool breeze and no mosquitos so this space will be the most popular location for my holiday parties! Wishing you all a happy holiday season!

When I was pulling together this feature, I was torn on what to focus on. Because the images themselves are so utterly beautiful. The backdrop and the photos from Artiese Studios…breathtaking. The bride and her handsome groom…stunning. The Gossamer gown, the florals from Passion Roots, the everything. But then I read the sage advice that accompanied the piece (featured below) and thought that perhaps the real beauty was tucked into the story. Then I decided to just let you soak up all of the gorgeous and decide for yourself what you love the most. Click here for even more.

From the Bride…My words of advice…for the wedding day, I’d say to make the celebration as personal as possible. At our wedding, we had our favorite pizza and played all our favorite songs and danced with our favorite people. Don’t worry about everything being “perfect” because if you’re surrounded by all the people and things you love, then it will be perfect. Bonus tip speaking as a photographer, plan your schedule/location around the light (no high noon ceremonies in the desert, please!)

For marriage, it’s cliche but making time for each other is *so* important! Date nights at least once a month, and don’t forget to kiss every single day! You might thing it sounds simple, but things get lost in the chaos! Everything in life can get so busy that you forget to really cherish each other, and it’s so important to take a moment to step out of everything together and just enjoy being in each other’s company once in a while.

A Wedding Planned in 2 Days Due to a Hurricane Evacuation!

When the South Carolina governor issued official evacuation orders due to Hurricane Matthew, Calli and Brandon knew their Hilton Head wedding plans had taken a serious turn. But as fate would have it, an entirely new wedding day was in store for them in Atlanta…and everything fell right into place. I’m talking a venue with a last-minute cancellation plus vendors AND guests all willing to pack up and make the drive. Read below for Calli’s amazing telling of the story, and see how their wedding came together in 2 days with photographs by Amy Arrington.

The Proposal

The story began after a dreamy proposal on July 4th, 2015. Where would we get married? Would we have it in Nashville, where we lived, where our relationship started, where we bought our first home? Would we have it in Atlanta where I was originally from and where my family still lives? After much deliberation and a few weeks of visiting venues, we retreated to my fiancé’s family vacation home in Hilton Head Island, SC. With fall being our favorite season we opted for October. The wedding would take place on October 8th, 2016. I had visited Hilton Head as a child and always loved it. My fiancé spent most of his summers there. Since the two of us had dated, Hilton Head had become our spot…it just felt perfect.

The Storm

Wednesday, September 28th, 2016 I lay in bed watching Good Morning America knowing I need to get up and ready for work. Ginger Z comes on with a special weather alert. A hurricane is brewing in the tropics and could potentially impact the United States in the next week or so. It could either move towards the gulf or it could move straight up the Atlantic coast, as of now they just don’t know. I felt a pit growing in my stomach. My fiancé came out of the bathroom to catch the end of it and then looked at me. He assured me it would be fine as did everyone else. Hurricanes never hit Hilton Head they all told me.

We were set to leave for the wedding the following Tuesday, October 4th. By the time October 4th came around there was very much a hurricane heading towards the United States. They had named the hurricane Matthew and it was not only a hurricane but a category 4 hurricane. We had a rain plan. We had rented tents to go along the golf course. The only event outside was the ceremony and cocktail hour. We would have those events in the tents and then the remainder of the night would continue as planned. We had a rain plan but we did not have a hurricane plan.

As I walked down the stairs at my parents’ house in Atlanta on the morning of October 4th I could hear my parents and fiancé talking. As I entered the kitchen they asked me to sit down and we talked about what I had been trying to avoid—the event that you have put your heart and soul into for the last fifteen months may not happen. I sat there and stared at them emotionless. I had nothing to give back. My Dad explained that we would continue on as planned until we couldn’t go any farther. I decided to lay my head down and just try not to think about it.

The Evacuation

As I woke about an hour later I looked at my phone. I had a few missed calls from my wedding planner and then the text message. The text message was probably one of the hardest texts she had ever had to write. She informed me the Governor of South Carolina was about to declare a State of Emergency and issuing an evacuation for Hilton Head Island effective tomorrow morning, October 5th. No one would be able to enter the island after tomorrow morning and there was no date for the evacuation to be lifted. I immediately called her. I could hear it in her voice–it wasn’t a good feeling. We were 30 minutes outside of Hilton Head. She was in Charleston and asked me to go to our house in Hilton Head and she would meet me there later that evening.

I spent the next thirty minutes calling close friends and wedding party. I broke the news to them and they were devastated. I explained we didn’t know what we were going to do but if they had flights or house rentals they should probably cancel them while they can get their money back.

The phone calls kept coming in. The Governor had changed her evacuation order and it was now mandatory. Hotels, businesses, restaurants, offices, private clubs – all were to evacuate and close their doors effective immediately. One by one my vendors called me. I explained I understood and didn’t know what we were going to do but I would let them know. The hotels where we had rooms blocks closed. The country club closed. The event rental company closed. The list goes on. My parents began asking me what we would like to do. It was hard to process the fact that this was not happening.

The New Game Plan

My mom suggested Atlanta where they lived. I shrugged. I wasn’t ready to make a decision but I didn’t have time to wait because we had 200 people waiting by the phone for the decision. My fiancé and I talked and decided Atlanta would work —we couldn’t reschedule for a later date. I don’t think we could emotionally handle doing it all over. I started to call my vendors back. I started with my wedding planner. She said she was in. I thought she was joking but realized she wasn’t when she packed up her Denali and hit the road with all of our wedding stuff shortly after we spoke. She was on the way to Atlanta to start planning wedding two. My florist—same thing. She packed up her van with as many flowers as it could hold and she hit the road to Atlanta. My band—same thing. My photographer—same thing. My videographer—same thing. All we needed was a venue, food, rentals, string quartet and a lot of help.

The help came quickly. My parents have a core group of friends that consists of about 10 couples. They have been my family growing up. We do life together. They had all gathered at one house and were waiting to take orders. I told them all that I could think of that we needed and they began. One was in charge and she would be the person working with my wedding planner. I called my wedding planner and explained she had ten women waiting on her when she arrived and they were hers until Saturday. I don’t think she realized what she was getting into but I am sure it quickly became apparent that they were there to do anything she needed. They found vases for flowers, an identical getaway car, a bakery that was willing to bake my original wedding cake, a string quartet, rose petals, hair, makeup—the list goes on. All we needed was a venue, rentals and food.

We never unpacked the car. We slept overnight because we were just too tired to drive back—well I should say we tried to sleep. I met my mom in the living room at 2am staring at her phone as I was doing the same lying in bed. When we left that morning we were escorted off the island by the National Guard. Businesses were boarding windows; the beaches were cleared and prepared for a disaster. The five-hour drive would take us about nine hours. An hour outside of Atlanta my mom called and asked us to pull over at the next exit and get out of the car. I thought to myself I think she has lost it.

We did what she asked and we pulled over. She explained to us along the drive something had told her to call a venue close to our house in Marietta, so she did. Two of our close family friends had been married there in the past. It was an old country club. It had ceremony locations, a golf course and many event spaces for a reception. They had a cancellation this morning for an event that was planned to take place this Saturday, October 8th. We looked at each other. She explained they thought she was pranking them when she told them our story. When they realized she was not they quickly leapt into action and said they had never planned a wedding in two days but if we came tonight and finalized everything they would do it!

The Wedding Day!

The wedding went off without a hitch. My girlfriends found the best hair and makeup people in town and they both weirdly were available. One even mentioned it was the only Saturday she wasn’t booked the whole year. We lost five guests total –everyone else came. The weather was beautiful. I married the man of my dreams. It was the best day ever.

I am not sharing my story in hopes that you may feel bad for us. I had numerous news stations contact us and ask us to share our story – I kindly declined. I am sharing my story for a few reasons. The Sunday before our wedding we sat in church. We were ending a series called “Wild and Free.” Our guest speaker was a man by the name of Gavin Adams. Gavin talked about using our limiting moments in unlimited ways. Turning our limiting moments into refining and defining moments.

Most people say after your wedding is over you can go into a depression-like state. Something you have planned for so long is over in the blink of an eye. Mine was a different feeling. Something I planned for so long never happened and would never happen. It was a feeling that is hard to describe. One part of me was ecstatic that I could now call the man of my dreams my husband. Another part of me avoided the wedding at all cost. I wouldn’t watch my wedding videos, I wouldn’t look at pictures, I wouldn’t talk about it unless someone talked to me directly about it. I avoided it as much as I could.

Then I thought about the message in church. Members of our family who were not speaking are now speaking because of our situation. People who normally don’t get along sat at the same table because of our situation. My Grandmother who was recently diagnosed with cancer was able to make it because of our situation. Our limiting moment was used in unlimited ways. When things don’t go quite as planned on your wedding day try to step back and remember this story and know that it will all be ok.

They Wed at a Sleeping Beauty-Style Castle!

Hailing from Virginia, Christina and Sam decided a destination wedding in France was the vision for their day. They chose a XVIth century castle straight out of a fairytale and brought on Fete in France to help every details fall into place. Greg Finck captured their incredible day to remember, and you can see so much more right this way.

From Greg FinckChristina and Sam are both from Virginia, but had decided to plan their destination wedding at Château de la Bourdaisière, in the Loire Valley, France. The Château de la Bourdaisière is a stunning castle from the XVIth century, and was the perfect backdrop for a classical and elegant wedding. Roses and ivy along the walls, reminded of a fairytale castle, straight out of The Sleeping Beauty.

The day was perfectly planned and organized by Fête in France, with beautiful florals by Sol Y Flor. Despite an unreliable weather that day, the ceremony still was held outside in between two showers. Christina and Sam exchanged vows with the glorious chateau as a backdrop.

Reception was held in one of the Chateau’s galleries, with a wonderful and colorful setup. Such a beautiful Spring wedding day to remember!

A Bridal Shower That Embraces All Things Pink

When it comes to bridal showers, we say “go girly or go home.” So naturally, this pink-on-pink party caught our eye in a serious way. Complete with a floral photo backdrop, a crown topped cake and no shortage of champagne, this is officially a bridal shower for the books.

From the Bride… I wanted my bridal shower to be girly, whimsical, and sweet. I showcased my love for pastels and my love for swans and with all my beautiful ladies by my side we laughed and enjoyed our time together. The only direction I gave my bridesmaids was, “wear something pink!” and they showed up in pastel shades of pink that went perfectly together.

I dreamt of popping champagne in a rose garden with a pink 50’s prom dress so I tried to make this vision come to life. The to-die-for backdrop was the staple to my party along with the oversized swans to add a bit of charm.

My bridesmaids and I reveled in this opportunity for our own photoshoot and loved laughing in front of the backdrop and with our props. Overall I feel the pink is warm and happy and everyone got a bit of bubbly with a gorgeous floral garnish to toast to love.
