This often overlooked destination couldn’t be more perfect for a romantic celebration. As a photographer in love with Ireland (and also lived there for 10 years with my Irish husband), I adore the opportunity to photograph weddings and collaborate on inspiration shoots when I visit our family in County Clare and Cork every year. This past July, I was able to collaborate on a shoot with Gabby of Banks & Leaf at historic Gloster House, a wedding venue in Birr County Offaly. The story of this inspiration shoot is of a beautiful red-haired Irish girl who lives in a very classical romantic country house in the countryside. She falls in love with a city-boy from Dublin. She shows him the beauty of the Irish countryside and the classical beauty of the house where she grew up. Our bride envisions a look that is classic and timeless, a white lace dress and veil by House of Delphine. The lace reminds her of her ancestors and the legacy of her family and Irish lace-making. Her bouquet is lush with tones of red. The red reminds her that winter is coming and that the red berries of the rowan tree and holly will be decorating the Irish landscape. Our floral designer, Dasha Caffrey, foraged Irish plants and flowers from her property in County Cavan. The dinner will be set for the wedding inside her home at Gloster House. She loves the dark richness of the centuries-old family table for the wedding meal. She has a dark cake with handmade sugar flowers by Cup Cakes and Counting. Her stationary is in navy, cream, crimson, and gold by Lenka Calligraphy. Her family heirlooms play a part in the dinner setting…she is home for now.

Although Cold Outside, This Winter Wedding Warmed Hearts Everywhere

This winter-loving couple braved the Michigan cold on their January wedding day with the talented Blaine Siesser Photographer in tow to snap a few photos, and let me tell you, it paid off! The beautiful Bride looked radiant in her Bill Levkoff gown against the snowy, white backdrop. Bonus: the cold gives you all the more reason to snuggle with your Groom! From the Blaine Siesser Photographer… Leading up to Krista’s wedding, I was excited! I knew her wedding was going to be full of love and so beautiful! With Alicia Caldecott from A Day in May leading the way with creative ideas and production expertise, this event was bound to be amazing.

Krista and Jed’s touching grace for each other and their warm hearts were the x factor that really made this one of my favorite events, too. They are a couple that truly values people, and they threw this party for their friends and family. They placed them as their top priority.

About six months before their wedding, Krista and Jed made the trip down to Detroit, and we had a blast taking photos all over the city at their engagement session. They are true adventurers, and exploring Detroit together was a great lead-in to their January wedding. A winter wedding is (always) an adventure too – you just don’t know what Michigan will have for you on any given Saturday in January. That day in Detroit was when Krista first told me she loved the winter! I could hardly believe her, but after seeing her wedding day, it is completely true. Considering that fact, she must have had her perfect wedding. It was 15 degrees with a wind chill and light flurries. Fleece shawls and Ugg boots adorned the bridesmaids while Krista kept warm with only her veil, bouquet, a tailored Bill Levkoff, and Jed’s hugs. He also lent her his jacket in between photos. After a first look at a family friend’s historic farm property, Krista and Jed stopped by the downtown district of Traverse City to take a few photos in front of the kissing wall (now since demolished making that photo even more special) and the theatre.

At the reception, Krista and her guests were greeted with the warm glow of endless candelabras on long tables. It was a perfect winter evening spent staying cozy warm at the Grand Traverse Resort with toasts, dances, and his and her custom cocktails. I was blessed to be there and to know this wonderful couple. If you ever see a couple walking the streets of any snowy winter city without a hat and gloves, you might have found this wonderful duo – say hello! Here’s to more wonderful winter weddings! Stay warm out there!

Who Should Pay For Your Wedding?

The ancient practice of a dowry—the bride’s father giving the groom’s family money or goods in exchange for the bride’s hand in marriage—has mostly fallen by the wayside (minus some cultures). And today, there’s no norm when it comes to who pays for the wedding. Did you hear about the couple who asked guests to fork over $200 each to attend their UK wedding?

“These days, payment traditions have gone out the window,” says Barb Culbertson, Event Coordinator with the Lumber Exchange Event Center in Minneapolis. And with many couples taking on the costs of the wedding themselves, there’s truly no right or wrong way to host a wedding. In a nutshell, do what works for you!

Who actually pays for the wedding?
“Everything from one side of the family paying, to an even split down the middle between the families, to more couples footing the entire bill themselves,” Barb says. But just because a couple is taking on the financial cost, does not mean that they won’t have to listen to their families’ opinions. “I’ve had many couples ‘discuss’ options openly as a group, but oftentimes those ‘discussions’ end in frustration,” Barb says. “It’s important that the bride and groom communicate with their families about where they want input on wedding details, and where they don’t.”

Figure out what works for you!
After a couple gets engaged, sitting down and prioritizing aspects of the wedding is key to divvying up costs easily. “Every family and situation is different. It all depends on what is important to your families,” Barb says. “If one side really wants an open bar, they’ll typically pay for it. If the bride and groom have their hearts set on an extravagant feast, they’ll typically chip in or pay the tab entirely.” Getting everyone on the same page, and setting a realistic budget, will save couples from mountains of stress down the road.

How to save
“There are quite a few apps and websites out there that help brides and grooms ask for financial assistance,” Barb says. “The platform is there, but as a bride and groom, you have to feel comfortable asking your guests to help contribute.” Barb cautions that couples should put themselves in the shoes of guests when being asked to pay for their big day. “The bar tab can add up quickly, so if you are looking to save money at your wedding, hosting beer and wine only is a very common way to cut that bill down,” Barb suggests.

On the flip side, being asked to help contribute to someone’s big day can set off a firestorm of opinions and questions. “If a couple asks you to help pay for their wedding and you are not comfortable with it, use your discretion on how to decline the invitation. Do what is comfortable for you.”

Precious Moments Caught on Film at This Chicago Wedding

From Elizabeth Nord Photography… Maggie radiated pure elegance and style in her dress from Mignonette Bridal and purple Jimmy Choo shoes. The pink tutu dresses that she chose for her flower girls were so cute, and I loved watching the boys help Tony get dressed! The ceremony at The Geraghty (with decor by Kehoe Designs) was filled with ghost chairs and tons of candlelit lanterns that lined the aisle creating an incredibly cozy and romantic environment. As Maggie walked down the aisle, you could see the tears beginning to pool into Tony’s eyes, and I’m particularly fond of the photo where one of Tony’s sons is looking up at him so adoringly. I nearly lost it when Maggie’s dad gave her away. His embrace was so tight, and his face just said it all. I’m a huge daddy’s girl, so this definitely tugged at my heart!

If you thought the ceremony set up was incredible, you’re going to fall over when you see the reception! I can’t even describe the beauty. I fell in love with the gray wood tables! Their reception was so special. You couldn’t help but notice Tony and Maggie’s selfless nature as they recognized those who have served and continue to serve in the military. They also made a point to celebrate and sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to their grandfather! A fun surprise for the guests was that Maggie’s dad sang their first dance song!

From Michelle Lange… Emily and Jeff’s wedding at the Hildene Estate in Manchester, Vermont began with a vision of a classic, romantic garden wedding. The abundance of rain in the Northeast helped fuel the beautiful blooms in the gardens at the Hildene. With breathtaking views of the rolling hills in Vermont and the incredible design by True Event, their big day was a pleasant visual feast for those in attendance.

From the Bride… After Jeff and I got engaged, we took some time to enjoy this phase of our relationship. We took about two months to relax before talking “all things wedding” and finally started the planning process on a trip to Argentina over the holidays. We wanted our wedding day to really represent us as a couple and would include a weekend surrounded by our immediate families and our friends, who would be traveling in from across the country. If you ask Jeff – we wanted this to be the best party we would ever throw (in fact, Jeff immediately skipped to the reception during the planning process forgetting that we had to make it official first!) We had actually settled on our band before we were even set on a location – determined to book them after seeing them at a friends’ wedding before we were engaged – and they kept the dance floor packed all night!

When it came to planning out the details of the wedding, I wanted to keep the colors neutral and the design simple and classic allowing the house and the gardens to really shine. If you ask anyone, it seemed like I had a very clear design plan in mind – behind the scenes Jeff would say I would end up down every Internet rabbit hole possible. In the end, keeping our priorities in mind and with some creativity, thinking a little outside the typical wedding box, and with the help of our amazing vendors we were able to bring our vision to life. A couple highlights for us we’re the pre-dinner cake truffles that greeted guests at their seats, the lighting that made the tent feel more cozy and kept the garden theme going, and Ernie, our dog, dressed to the nines in his tuxedo. Jeff had masterfully designed his own tuxedo down to the buttons. My dress was a bit more ambiguous – I thought I had a clear plan in mind of what I would wear on my wedding day. A visit to Carolina Herrera, at the recommendation of one of my bridesmaids, completely changed that idea and I ended up finding the dress of my dreams.

My brother, Andrew, passed away shortly before Jeff and I started dating. Incorporating his memory into our wedding was important for me since I always pictured him being there to celebrate with me. Since he has passed, pennies have become a symbol of him for me. When Jeff and I started the venue hunt, we toured the Hildene Estate, which was built by Abraham Lincoln’s son, Robert Todd. The gardens, beautiful mountain backdrop and coincidental symbolism of the Lincoln home made it the perfect location for our wedding. We were sure to include a nod to the penny in several details throughout the wedding design – a quiet representation that was dear to me and my family.

We’re Talking Bridal Accessories with the Queen of Cool, Betsey Johnson

We sat down with the icon herself to chat about her inspiration for Blue by Betsey Johnson and her advice for brides everywhere. From unique jewelry and sexy sleepwear to stunning bridal shoes with details for days (including built-in memory foam to help you dance to Spice Girls all night), we’re confident that you will have a huge girl crush on Betsey, too!

What inspired you to launch a bridal accessory and sleepwear line?

Betsey Johnson: It was obvious that my girls wanted it. The idea was a piece of cake – we wanted the collection to be pretty, sexy and affordable. I tell the girls – “Wedding on down, bride on out with my line.”

What is your favorite piece in your new collection?

Betsey Johnson: From the shoes – you will find lots of lucite, stones and glitter! My favorite shoe right now is the Gina, because these details are the sexiest and blingiest. I love the detail of the blue sole – it’s the perfect way to incorporate your “something blue.” I recently launched my jewelry collection – it adds a bit of fun to any outfit! (Check out my vintage floral earrings!) From my sleepwear collection, expect new things for Spring 18, such as an update to my favorite Mrs. Robe; it’s perfect for getting ready the day of your wedding.

What kind of bride were you?

Betsey Johnson: Three kinds for three times! Funky city hall, modern beautiful park avenue bride, vintage Yorkshire England bride.

What do you wish brides knew while planning their wedding and their look for the day?

Betsey Johnson: Focus on the process of building up to the wedding. Day of – make sure you have fun.

What is different about this new season for you than previous lines of Betsey Blue?

Betsey Johnson: The collection is more intricate, sparkly and sexier with a bit of glam. We designed to expand the line to include guests of the bride – the mothers, bridesmaids, wedding guests. There is something from everyone!

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Betsey Johnson: Usually old movies I watch on Turner Classic Movies channel. The old times give me ideas for the new times.

What is your favorite thing about working with brides?

Betsey Johnson: I calm them down and remind them to have more fun.

What can we expect from this new line?

Betsey Johnson: It’s best collection ever in terms of embellishment and decorations. There are more options in terms of price ranges and we have a variety of styles perfect for the bride, bridesmaids, MOB, and wedding guests!

From the Groom… Who moves to a ski town and expects to find love? Well, that is what happened when Z moved to Aspen and a few weeks later met Kelly. From hot springs and ski dates, to many road trips around the area, their bond solidified and the rest is history. They decided to have their wedding at their home in Aspen to show their family and friends why they live there and love the area so much.

The Playbook for Throwing the Perfect Fall Cocktail Party

With cozy, fall evenings on the horizon, cocktail parties are heading indoors and this inspiration courtesy of Anne Hyun of Black Twine, is the perfect excuse to throw a little shindig. Bright florals are paired with Jonathan Adler’s modern cocktail accoutrements and delicious bites. Think sushi and sliders served up on gold splattered plates and all washed down with Moscow Mules. From Anne Hyun, Founder of Black Twine… With summer entertaining still in recent memory and the anticipation of cozy fall nights ahead, we think that this modern cocktail party is perfect for a chiily weather get-together that is glamorous and yet attainable.

We styled Jonathan Adler’s iconic black and gold barware with pops of bright florals by designer Lewis Miller (known as the Florist Bandit for his surprise Flower Flashes in NYC ).

The light bites by Shiki NYC, including sushi balls, chicken tsukune sliders, and “fall” summer rolls, are elegant to plate up but couldn’t be easier to replicate.

And of course, the cocktails! Hella Cocktail Co. Mixers make it oh-so-easy for even the most amateur of bartenders (yours truly) to put together these fun Moscow Mules and Martinez cocktails that will get everyone talking.

The talented Emanuel Hahn artfully shot the party at Homepolish’s NYC kitchen studio, a perfect backdrop for an urban get-together. With Black Twine’s party blueprint, everything from shopping links to recipes and tips are all in one place to take you from inspiration to reality. And finally, the best party tip, from the icon Jonathan Adler himself, is to relax and remember, “People aren’t coming to your house to judge you on your décor or your food – they’re coming to see you.” Cheers to that!

2 Handsome Gents Wed in a XVIIIth Century Villa + It’s Stunning

The painted ceilings and frescoed walls of this XVIIIth century villa were all the backdrop needed for the wedding of these two impossibly handsome gents, but Honey and Cinnamon took it a step further with candlelight, gold accents, and a cake by Natalizi fit for a king. Greg Finck was there to work his magic behind the lens, capturing this very special and oh-so-beautiful day in Rome.

From Honey and Cinnamon…When Chris and Dub contacted me months before their wedding, there was a true and nice feeling when I met them. That feeling that came from their sweet attitudes and from the beautiful and elegant vision they had of their wedding day. I found out only weeks later that I was the only wedding planner they had got in touch with. but they knew I was the one since the first time we spoke to each other on Skype. Chris and Dub are one of the sweetest couples I ever had the pleasure to work with and the process went on so smoothly, with organizational and stylistic decisions made very quickly because they shared the same tastes and the same view of how their intimate wedding had to be.

They chose Rome because, they told me, they are used to traveling a lot together, but Rome was one of the places they had never visited together before. They agreed with me on every little thing I submitted to them, especially vendor selection. The venue I found was perfect for such a small wedding (only 40 guests at first, then 60 because all their relatives and friends were enthusiastic to be able to share such a special moment with them), with a stunning ancient library to hold their wedding ceremony with a typical male touch.

Chris and Dub got married in November, in the late afternoon of a warm day, with all their loved ones around. Their refined and unique taste was reflected in all the decisions they took in terms of little details, even the musical selection (classical music from the ceremony through the dinner) was perfect and so marvelous! Being fall, we played on typical fall shades for the floral arrangements, created by ISA’ Events, while the frescoed hall and the painted ceilings of the indoor rooms of this amazing villa did the rest to make this event so special. Everything was enhanced by little touches of gold in the paper goods created by Written Word Calligraphy and the wedding cake created by the expert pastry chefs of Natalizi Ricevimenti, which made everything even more beautiful. The stunning pictures of the uber talented Greg Finck are the proof of this special and unforgettable event.

Playing off of Pantone’s 2016 color of the year, Rose Quartz and Serenity, this couple took that pretty color pairing and ran with it, poolside. LVL Weddings & Events helped execute the vision and Brandon Kidd snapped all the pretty you absolutely need to see.

Anthropologie lovers take note, because this wedding has all the bohemian-style elegance you could ever want.
