Nebraskan Home with Southern Flair

Editor’s Note: A big career shift can be scary, but this SMP Alum (just take a peek at her gorgeous engagement shoot and truly fabulous wedding) took the big leap into interior design with pretty flawless execution! Take a tour of this classic southern Nebraska home – designed by Belinda Pabian and photographed by Jessica Blex – and see just what we mean!

It’s not often we see Nebraska homes get featured, and I think this one is worthy. This story infuses my passion of going after a new career endeavor, alongside a relatable story of transforming a home to suit one’s taste, as so many people are spending more time at home considering this very thing.

After years spent in the advertising agency world, my passion and love for interiors that are comfortable, functional and beautiful lead me to open my business, Belinda Pabian Interior Decorating & Styling. After working long hours daily in advertising, decorating my home became my creative outlet in the evenings and on the weekends.

I would share my home on social media, and that led me to get freelance interior design jobs. After I listed my first home for sale, I received a number of calls with inquiries requesting help with decorating homes, and that’s when I decided to go all in on my own business.

The Toalson family was one of those families. They are empty-nesters, who saw the value in upgrading their living spaces to reflect their style. They have a beautiful cape cod home in a historic neighborhood in Nebraska.

We infused a transitional design aesthetic, with touches of Southern coastal charm, to make a unique space. The couple has spent a good deal of time in the South visiting their daughter, and love the interiors from that region, so that served as much of the inspiration.


We achieved this look with a neutral base, infused subtle pops of color and used some of their existing antiques while adding a few more.

A Whimsical Alice in Wonderland Inspired Fête at a Private Lake Forest Estate

We’re getting major Alice in Wonderland vibes from this whimsical wedding at the bride’s family estate, and we can confidently say that we fell down the rabbit hole loving each and every one of these gorgeous images captured by Brittany Bekas. Today’s stunning bride wanted the lush grounds of her private estate venue to speak for themselves to achieve a more whimsy feel. With the help of Estera Events and Life In Bloom, the special day incorporated fanciful tones of blue, green, and white to in order to bring the bride’s image to life. From Brittany Bekas… This gorgeous private estate wedding in Lake Forest was inspired by the bride’s wedding venue/ parents’ family home, Fairlawn. She wanted the grounds of Fairlawn, imagined by the great landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmsted, to speak for themselves. For her, this meant making everything look lush and feel slightly whimsical, like Alice in Wonderland. She used the phrase “old growth” with vendors for her garden party meets 1800s estate wedding vision. 

From the gorgeous hanging floral cake to the mismatched chinoiserie to the abundance of topiaries to the modern blue tent, this garden party wedding was simply stunning. The bride wore a gorgeous Monique Lhuillier gown which was transformed from a timeless long-sleeve lace gown into a fun, relaxed short-sleeve gown following the ceremony. The blue color palette was inspired by the bride’s love of the effortless eclectic-ness of assorted classical chinoiserie and was the color direction for the mismatched bridesmaid dresses. 

The bride wanted to tie in the feeling of the lush gardens throughout the property inside the blue reception tent and decided to use topiaries to achieve this aesthetic. Topiaries became a bit of a motif throughout the wedding details – topiaries on the wedding invitations, at the front entrance to their home, by the pool for cocktail hour, at the entrance to the dinner tent, and mixed in on the reception tables among white flowers. 

No detail was overlooked for this stunning garden party wedding and the team that Courtney + Clarke assembled created a timeless, breathtaking estate wedding.

How to Keep Guest Safety the Priority at Your Micro Wedding During COVID-19

So here we are almost a year later, and COVID-19 is still as much of an issue for weddings as it was when it started closing things down back in March.

If you’re the brave couple that has decided to trim the guest list and have a smaller wedding according to your state’s current restrictions, I’m sure you still want to ensure your guests are safe and comfortable during your intimate wedding. So here are some tips on how we’ve helped our clients create a safe environment for their guests during this madness.

Temperature Check

While we all know that not having a fever is in no way confirmation that someone isn’t actually infectious with COVID-19, we also know that anyone who has a fever should avoid contact with others. So setting up a temperature check as guests arrive is a feasible option to start with – but you do have to keep in mind that telling a dear guest they need to leave will not be a pleasant experience for either party. 

If you’re doing temperature checks, advise guests ahead of time so they don’t feel uncomfortable or blindsided and know what to expect.

Make Hand Sanitizer Readily Available

This goes without saying but be sure to have hand sanitizer available and easily accessible in as many places as possible. In addition to larger bottles displayed throughout the ceremony and reception spaces, you can also offer small individual bottles to each guest. Now, although you can customize your hand sanitizer bottles with fun sayings or your names, I don’t suggest giving hand sanitizer as a wedding favor. They have their place, but let’s be honest, they’re not necessarily fun wedding favors. Give guests whatever other favor you had originally planned, and offer the individual bottles as an extra little token, either in a gift bag (if you’re doing one) or by setting up a cute display with them on their way in. 

 

Place Ceremony Chairs Further Apart

When you have fewer guests, you also have a lot more flexibility with layout. So have fun with different ideas based on your guest list. You can either create a layout where different families or groups from the same household sit together or simply space all chairs out evenly 6 ft apart – the latter is a better choice if you love symmetry. 

 

Have Everyone Mask Up 

I know I lost some people on this one, but this is so important. Masks aren’t pretty, and they aren’t festive, we can all agree on that. But not only are they necessary to protect your loved ones and guests, but they’re also currently a federal mandate. To avoid a sea of different colors and designs, you can provide masks to your guests in the color of your preference and make them easily available as soon as they come in (they can always be placed on the same table as those handy hand sanitizers).

Rethink Seating Arrangements

Seating 8 guests per table in the usual wedding arrangement is a very bad idea right now, even if you only have 25 guests. If you live in a state where you happen to have a larger allowance for gatherings (ours is very low here in North Carolina), then you can always maintain the overall layout, but seat fewer people per table. Also, make sure that you try as much as possible to group people from the same household on one table. You may have a table with 4 and a table with 8, and that’s okay! 

If you only have let’s say 10 or 25 guests, an option that I love is to create a really long and really wide estate table or two. To create this, push 2 3ft wide tables together so that you have a 6ft wide table. Then add as many tables as you’d like lengthwise, so you can space each chair about 6ft from the next and have everybody sitting at the same table. This will still get you that beautiful, estate table feel while keeping everyone 6ft apart in every direction.

Take It Outside!

I know this won’t be possible for everyone, but if you have the option of doing an outdoor tented reception versus being indoors. This may help not only keep your guests more comfortable but also allow you to possibly host more of your guests (depending on where you are hosting your wedding).

In addition, you can ask for negative tests from your vendors that you will be in close contact with – such as your planner, photographer, or videographer. Please keep in mind that if this was not part of the original contract, your vendors may require that you reimburse them for the cost of the test.

I applaud you for moving forward with a smaller wedding despite Covid-19, especially if you had a large guest count, to begin with! I know it can be so hard to have to tell so many of your guests they won’t be able to come to celebrate with you. Live streaming can still allow them to share in your joy though, and you’ll always have the opportunity to throw an amazing 5 or 10 year anniversary celebration later on!

An Elegant Spring Wedding With Ocean Views at the Chanler in Newport, Rhode Island

Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the United States, but it certainly has much to offer. Today we’re transporting you to a storybook wedding in The Ocean State that we just can’t help but swoon over! Tom and Tim took advantage of Rhode Island’s beauty by commemorating their big day at The Chanler At Cliff Walk, a refined seaside location offering Gilded Age elegance and salt-filled air. The couple’s team of vendors absolutely nailed every little detail of the day. Anchor and Grace delivered glamorous floral arrangements, beautifully complimenting the sophistication of the black tie wedding and Confectionery Designs slayed the game with a modern, black and gold cake. From Rebecca Yale PhotographyTom and Time were married in late Spring at The Chanler in Newport, RI. The couple said their I Do’s in front of 40 of their closest friends and family who they invited to spend the weekend with them in Newport, taking over the beautiful inn at the end of the historic Cliff Walk. The weekend kicked off with a casual celebration on Friday evening at 22 Bowen’s on the other side of the island followed by drinks by the fire back at the Chanler. Each guest was welcomed to their room with a tote bag reading “love wins” full of goodies hand picked by the grooms including Newport classics like salt water taffy, candy from the famous Dylan’s Candy Bar, a custom made cookie with their initials echoing back to their invitation and homemade brittle sealed with the same wax seal as their envelopes.

Guests spent Saturday morning exploring the island’s historic homes with the pass included in their welcome bags, before coming together for an afternoon ceremony on the lawn of the inn. The tone of the black tie wedding was perfectly set by the elegant invitation suite by Written Word Calligraphy featuring a drawing on the save the date and detail packet of the Chanler that was also used on the custom wax seal of the envelope. Both grooms wore a custom made diamond engagement ring and a wedding band and Tom surprised Tim with a third sapphire ring the day before the wedding as a special ‘something blue’ for the wedding day. They also exchanged surprise groom gifts, an Hermes scarf for Tomand an Hermes bangle for Tim. The boys got ready together in their suite overlooking the ocean and got help with the finishing touches from their friend Rhys who also served as their officiant for the ceremony. Portraits were taken nearby at the Elms with each of their closest friends serving as their matrons of honor and Rhys’ wife, Elizabeth, as their flower girl.

The ceremony took place in the round on the grand lawn of the Chanler overlooking the ocean below. The grooms were perfectly bookmarked by two oversized urns filled with flowering branches to match the blossoming trees all over the property. Guests were welcomed to the ceremony with refreshments and Tom’s cousin served as their usher giving out the programs to the guests. The ceremony was custom written in a suede bound notebook by their friend Rhys and included two readings one by their flower girl and one by Tom’s cousin. Many a tear was shed as the two men exchanged their vows and shared their first kiss as husband and husband.

Cocktail hour was held on the terrace of the Spiced Pear restaurant and guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres, a fresh seafood bar and champagne as the sun set behind them. Guests were welcomed into dinner inside the Spiced Pear for a six course meal at Newport’s finest restaurant. Toasts were given by some of their friends and family and one of Tim’s oldest friends, who is a professional singer, serenaded them during the dinner. A copy of the coffee table book Newport Mansions was used as a guest book and left out for people to sign during the evening. The formal part of the evening ended with the cutting of the cake and then guests moved to the fire pit outside and enjoyed s’mores, grilled cheese and after dinner drinks till the wee hours of the morning.

For These Two Desert Dwellers, the Third Time Was the Charm!

For Emily and Vik, it turns out that third times the charm. The couple had their wedding day rescheduled twice due to Covid-19, but with the help of a powerhouse team of vendors, their third attempt turned into the stuff wedding dreams are made of. Imoni Events saved the day with unparalleled service and the ability to pull things together at the drop of a hat. Beautiful blooms by The Flower Studio in shades of cream, white, and blush make the day feel as if you’re walking through a dream. From the bride… Third times the charm, our wedding was planned and rescheduled twice before we were wed on September 26, 2020. That is why I say Jenni Thye of Imoni Events was our lifesaver and therapist, she kept us calm and used her resources to find us another venue that same day our second venue canceled on us.



Throughout our planning we wanted to work off of the desert theme and picked blush pink, white, and natural desert shades as our wedding colors. We wanted our ceremony and reception to be the stars of the show and our vendors did an amazing job to accomplish that.



The wedding planning process wasn’t anything that we had originally thought it was going to be but it was the most magical and amazing day for Vik and I. It could have never been accomplished without our amazing wedding planner, vendors, and venue. It truly took a village to make this wedding happen and we are so thankful for each and every person who had a helping hand along the way!

East Meets West Wedding Inspiration That Celebrates a Significant Hindu Tradition

This East meets West inspirational shoot at Prestwold Hall in the United Kingdom graciously combines neoclassical architecture and lush, exotic gardens. Weddings with cultural representations are incredibly hot right now, and this shoot is proof, as it served to recognize a special Hindu ritual. Tes Moments worked her planning magic to create a color palette that reflected the romance between her couple, and Niche Weddings & Events used the structure of the venue to design a floral display that we believe is the cherry on top to the aesthetics of this day. This concept is a showcase of East meets West in a luxury fusion style rather than fully traditional. The setup is the after-wedding feeling where the couple have some alone time and re-evoke those cherished moments before the wedding ceremony. We also have the reception where the elegance is highlighted with the soft and subtle tones which are used to give this beautiful and dreamy style. The theme Promise I Make To You originates from the rituals of seven vows which is performed in a Hindu wedding where the bride and groom go around the sacred fire seven times. Going for a fusion style does not mean one is not cultured which generally is the perception in the Asian culture. The mood was to reminisce those vows and there is no better place than Prestwold Hall which is a beautiful stately home in the heart of Leicestershire. This is a Grade 1 listed home which has been the seat of the Packe family where the architecture is of neoclassical style and beautiful gardens reflecting the classical symmetry of the house and looking at the rising parkland. 

For this venue, the S-Type Jaguar was the perfect choice as it was oozing modern elegance. The conservatory, dining area and the outside of the house were the main parts which were used for this shoot as they all had a different character, elegance and beauty. Simple is Beautiful, Elegant and Luxurious. The womenswear was selected based on a darker pink colour for the main ceremony where the details of the embroidery made it different from the traditional red bridal. For the reception, focus was on the lighter colour of coral. 

The menswear focused on a lighter tone of ivory and embroidery was not heavy on the whole attire whilst for the reception, the focus was darker but with subtle embroidery which made it stand out. For both set up, the bride was always the focus and the photographer captured all the key moments of that journey from miss to mrs. For the jewellery, fine diamonds were used as they complemented the outfits as well as the dainty shoes. In terms of hair and makeup, we went for flowing and Hollywood curls and natural make up which made the bride beautiful. The Coral, Soft Peach, Ivory and lighter tone palette created this dreamy luxurious look through the tablescape, chairs, centerpieces, stationery, florals, cake, macaroons, damask Linen and embroidered napkin. 

For the cake, David Austin and Avalanche Roses were the inspiration behind as they are both specific varieties which are popular with Brides. We also used the sugar flower where each petal was hand cut, sculpted and dusted instead of fresh flowers to create a different visual experience. The soft wooden peach charger plate was enhanced with the damask ivory linen which transformed the beautiful room. To announce the arrival of the bride and groom, we used the violinist who started on a Bollywood theme mixed with pop music. The whole shoot and concept felt original, beautiful and romantic and was captured beautifully by the photographer. My advice to couples will be: Create those moments which are yours to cherish forever through pictures and guests experience by infusing your personality and culture together.

A Wedding Planner’s Atrium Baby Shower

Editor’s Note: Being a wedding planner means you have exquisite taste, an eye for details, and knowledge of the coolest venues your city has to offer. All of those key characteristics come directly into play in this GORGEOUS atrium baby shower! Take a look!

When a wedding planner is expecting, you know her baby shower is going to be next level beautiful! Natalie put her expert planning skills to use to bring her French country vision for her baby girl’s shower to life.

The festivities took place in the atrium at The Manor House Event Center in Mason, OH. The venue boasted floor to ceiling arched windows and a glass ceiling to bathe the room in gorgeous natural light rain or shine. Lisa created custom floral arrangements with a soft, classic, feminine touch to bring life and natural beauty to the space.

And J Char designed unique round menus showcasing the brunch menu for the morning’s celebration. Natalie’s family lives out of town, so it was such a gift for her to be able to put her talents to use in designing a stunning baby shower so they could come in and celebrate with her stress-free. This dream team of vendors came together to bring her vision to life and make sure her baby girl was celebrated in style!

We imagined a story of a secluded weekend away for a mini wedding inside the restored great room of this historic home. A warm fire, cozy velvet, and plaid, brought the idea to life.



Abundant bright florals, greenery, and an ethereal backdrop of the rolling hills and tree lines came together to create the perfect intimate atmosphere. The overall look and feel created wedding inspiration magic.

This North Carolina Wedding Gives New Meaning To Pretty In Pink

Calling all pink lovers, you are in for a treat! Rebecca Rose Events took this bride’s favorite color and created the most exquisite day around it. From lush blooms to floral textured table linens, everything at this al fresco affair is coming up pretty. The open-air reception stuns with some of the most romantic tables we’ve ever seen. Heather Beerman captured all the lovely details in her beautiful imagery. Check out the full gallery for a closer look at all the fun!



From Rebecca Rose EventsWith health and safety their utmost priority, Charisse and Ryan chose to forego their plans to host 150 guests in the mountains of Virginia for a summer 2020 wedding celebration. Instead, we worked with this thoughtful and gracious couple to reimagine, relocate, plan, design, and produce an intimate celebration at Half-Mile Farm, a luxury country inn by Old Edwards in Highlands, North Carolina.



Following their ceremony on the Farm’s event lawn, family guests enjoyed an open-air, farm-fresh dinner under the exquisite Porte Cochère. Charisse adores flowers and loves the color pink, and we made sure to incorporate both in as many design elements as possible, even adding a layer of floral fabric texture to their al fresco dinner, with a blush floral linen overlay.



The happy couple concluded the evening with a “concert on the lawn” by East Coast Entertainment’s Park Brothers, under a small sailcloth tent with a few of their guests. It was the perfect alternative to a dancefloor, as a safe and enjoyable way to spend the evening celebrating.

An Intimate Garden Wedding Full Of Modern Whimsy

Gardens have long served as a source of inspiration for romance, and this wedding amongst the greenery does not disappoint. Filled with modern whimsy, the bride and groom worked with Milk Events and Weddings By Darlene to design and execute a day that included special details at every turn. Our favorite? The couple’s flower girl, their dog Unagi! Blooms By Morgan turned up the romance by filling the day with beautiful florals in soft hues. From the bride… I was fortunate enough to find a Spanish inspired venue that was rustic and modern romantic. I gravitated to marble and gold as the running theme throughout, and really wanted to see the florals marry that throughout the wedding. I realized it fit really well with the style of the dress, venue architecture, and the landscape.



Given that the wedding happened during the pandemic, I realized having an intimate guest list is more special. Unagi, my fur baby, made an exclusive walk down the aisle as the flower girl. But the most memorable moment was during the vow exchange. I thought that after several times of practicing, I wouldn’t get choked up, but it definitely took a while before I finished my vows in person!



My best advice for couples planning their wedding is to remember that your partner always has your best interest at heart. Learn to trust the person you’re in love with, and it will reciprocate back.

Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue: You’ll Want These Figured Out Way Before Your Wedding Morning

So, at first thought, ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue’ just seems like an old school wedding tradition that has totally worn out its wear. And we get it, it’s not a critical part of the wedding picture – getting married without them doesn’t mean your day will be cursed or your future will be destined for failure – not by any stretch of the imagination. But like other things that give your day a sense of ceremoniousness, in a sort of “without your old, new, borrowed, and blue, were you even a bride?” kind of way (and let’s be clear about this, you absolutely are, that’s not conditional), this wedding prescription is just lots of fun. Brides look forward to planning out their ‘somethings,’ and when they get stuck or need some new inspiration, they can turn to the closest people to them to source something special. 

The cool thing about the wedding-ism in this day and age, is that there truly is no formula to honor it: the old, the new, the borrowed, the blue, they’re all up to you and your own interpretations. They don’t have to be woven into your wedding ensemble, they don’t even have to be noticeable to anyone but you, and to be honest, they don’t even have to be tangible – for instance, maybe you and your fiancé dated and broke up years ago and then got back together and engaged shortly after. Your relationship and decision to wed, then, can be your something old and something new. It makes sense, it’s meaningful, and better yet, it’s modern.

Whatever you choose to use as your something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue, though, should be well-thought-out and intentional. It’s easy to fall into a “I’ve got my something blue, and that’s the hardest, so I’ll just come up with the rest later” trap and then arrive at your wedding morning without the rest of the rhyme reasoned out. That’s why we’re all for getting these ducks in a row well before your big day. 

  1. If you’re asking your parents or your grandparents for something old, you’ll want to approach the topic well in advance – especially if you’re considering an heirloom or something that’s preserved and not taken out very often. 
  2. If you’re asking your mom or sister or best friend for something borrowed, you’ll also want to clue them in on your plans pretty quickly. You/they may have to seek out alterations or get their item cleaned before you can use it (like a veil, a pair of shoes, estate jewelry, etc.). 
  3. If you’ve come up with your somethings, it might even help to give your photographer a heads up about what they are when you send them over your pre-event shot list (a few weeks prior to your party); doing so can ensure you’ll have them packed up and poised to shine in all of those getting-ready photos.

Granted, all of the props and products in our Style Me Pretty Collection are something new, but if you use them for your own wedding day and then pass them on to your siblings, cousins, friends (maybe even your own daughter one day, decades from now), you can keep the something old and something borrowed alive and well!

Something Old

We mentioned before that this wedding tradition doesn’t have any boundaries or limitations, and it’s absolutely true; that said, when it comes to ‘something old,’ we think a piece of jewelry that was, perhaps, worn by your grandmother or mother on their own wedding days (or maybe even when you were born!) is the perfect tribute. It’s also a fantastic way to incorporate something vintage or classic into your modern wedding day look.

Something New

This category is probably the easiest of the four, because anything that you get in your role as the bride is probably new: your engagement ring, your wedding planning paraphernalia, your wedding dress, if this is your first wedding, your being a bride is something new – as is your new last name (if you’ll be taking one!)! But something new can also relate to trends you’ll be embracing on your wedding day (be it neon signs, hanging installations, etc.).

Something Borrowed

Like something old, something borrowed involves collaborators – from your blood relatives to your new family-in-law, close friends to your soon-to-be spouse him/herself. Maybe you’re borrowing your mom’s veil, maybe you’re wearing a hair pin that your MOH wore when she got married, or maybe you want to buy something to really show those special pieces off… or happily pass along over the years. #Sisterhoodofthetravelingdresshanger, anyone?

Something Blue

This category may not be the easiest, but it’s probably where you can be most creative. Consider dropping hints to your hunny about something blue for the gift he or she gets you (the wedding morning gift exchange is another thing that doesn’t have to happen, but it’s sooo nice if it does!), treat yourself to some statement blue-hued jewels or shoes, or ask your girls to get in on it with their own blue jewelry or pretty powder blue nails (to match white or vanilla-toned bridesmaid dresses?). You can even do a duo of blue French macarons or meringues for your favors… guests will love being part of your traditions! 

A Family Affair Backyard Wedding Complete With Bistro Lights and a U Shaped Dining Table

It’s true — home is where the heart is. We thought we’d seen it all when it comes to backyard weddings, but the sheer beauty of this one proved us wrong! This family affair was a nod to togetherness and social bonding. With plenty of warm candlelight, lush florals, and classic china, Tailyr and Sam enjoyed an evening of love, all thanks to the incredible work of Rachael Ellen Events. To match her elevated backyard wedding, Tailyr wore an effortlessly elegant Sarah Seven gown. We’re certain this celebration was truly one for the family album. From Rachael Ellen Events… When Tailyr and Sam became engaged, they weren’t sure what their plans would entail but they knew they wanted to create something intimate and social for those who truly mattered most. Their backyard wedding truly was a family affair, with only their nearest and dearest in attendance. The wedding took place at the groom’s family home where they decorated the yard with bistro lights and a U shaped dining table.

We opted for this design as it felt intimate and inclusive. The tables were adorned with ivory linens, classic china and glassware, modern gold flatware, french blue napkins, and dozens of petite garden inspired arrangements. The length of the tables were covered in taper candles and each place setting was adorned with a rough edge wax seal name card created by Ink & Press Co. Our goal with the design was to create something that felt romantic and incredibly special for the small number of guests who were in attendance.

After the sun set, the bride put on a denim jacket with pearl adornments to match the pearls on her Sarah Seven dress. These pearls were also what inspired the cake design! The guests were served Mexican food from the couples local favorite spot and enjoyed pies handmade by the grooms mother. The grooms sister was the photographer, her sister in law the videographer, and the brides cousin the DJ. The brides mother even did the groups hair!

Despite the twists and turns of this year, they truly made this a family affair to remember. The couple, avid Star Wars fans, made their exit through a tunnel of light sabers.

An Honest Update From SMP on the Changes We’ve Made to Champion a True Change in Our Community

As many of you may know, last summer we compiled a list of 6 promises to champion a true change against racism and inequality in the wedding community. And while we are only just beginning, we would like to invite you further into the conversation and share some of the initiatives that we are working on to ensure that Style Me Pretty is at the forefront of a deep, long lasting industry-wide change. 

Before we dig in, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you. To you…our readers. Who were willing to share their experiences, frustrations, their anger and pain. Who were willing to offer ideas, brainstorm with our staff, take time out of your very busy worlds to help us understand how deep the scars of racism go and what steps we can take to begin to heal. Without the help and patience of all of you – along with our incredible team of Diversity Panel members (more on these rockstars below) – we would be ill equipped to really understand the nuances of how racism big and small has affected our community. 

And now, it’s time to report back to you on exactly what changes have been made since our promises made in June of 2020. As always, this is an ongoing and open conversation and we welcome any and all thoughts as to how we can better ourselves and continue to invoke meaningful, important changes within the wedding industry

 

Promise 1: Champion Black vendors and ensure their work is regularly celebrated on SMP.com

In order to ensure the work of the BIPOC community is regularly celebrated on SMP.com, we have created a masterlist of minority vendors, sourced from our own research, roundups of Black wedding vendors, and more. We intend to use this masterlist to ensure we are featuring minority vendors as often as possible – if we need to source more content, or reach out to vendors for advice-driven pieces, we can refer back to our masterlist. 

We also want to mention that after our promises went live back in June, we have received an outpouring of submissions featuring Black couples and POC couples, but also from minority vendors (self-identified). We are still in the process of working internally with our Diversity Panel on how to best identify minority vendors who submit to SMP. This will be one our main focuses as we move forward in the New Year. 

Promise 2: Undertake a Diversity Audit of all content posted in 2020 to date

You may remember us sharing the disappointing results of our first Diversity Audit back in August. But now, we are sharing our latest results below that reflect the content changes we have made since then. While this may only be one small piece of the puzzle, we are very proud of how far we’ve come in doing our part to accurately portray the representation of BIPOC couples on our site. 

In the period from January 2020 to May 2020, prior to our commitment, there was a total of 282 post, of which 230 featured a bride or groom. The breakdown of which is as follows:

  • White / Caucasian: 158 (69%)
  • Asian: 40 (17%)
  • Black / African American: 20 (9%)
  • Hispanic / Latino: 12 (5%)

In the period from July 2020 through December 2020, there was a total of 245 posts, of which 217 featured a bride or groom. The breakdown of which is as follows:

*We would like to preface this by noting that we set ourselves a goal for our numbers to be in line with the US census.

  • White / Caucasian: 103 (47%) 
  • Asian: 18 (17%)
  • Black / African American: 66 (31%)
  • Hispanic / Latino: 11 (5%)

Between January to May 2020, only 2% of the celebrations we published were same sex weddings. In June 2020, this increased to 4%, however we continue to face challenges in the representation of Same-Sex BIPOC couples. Despite our best efforts to actively seek out this specific content, we unfortunately do not receive enough of these submissions on a regular basis. This will be another main area of focus for us in 2021. In the meantime, we encourage couples and vendors alike to please submit weddings and styled shoots that feature same-sex BIPOC couples for consideration to SMP. We will continue to produce a diversity audit every 6 months and will, of course, be sharing the results publicly with our community. 

Promise 3: Actively seek out and feature more weddings of BIPOC couples

Following on from our promise to audit our content and share the results, we promise to continue to do better. Our overarching goal with this promise is to ensure that every person, no matter the color of their skin, their culture, their sexual orientation, gender identity or their religion, feels comfortable, at home and inspired when they read Style Me Pretty. 

As part of this, we are committed to continuing to actively seek, and even more regularly featuring the weddings of Black, biracial, and other minority couples. We want to ensure that our readers regularly see themselves in the content of our site and on our social channels, and so realize the need for our content to be more representative of the different ethnicities that make up the population around us. 

As mentioned above, after sharing our initiative back in June, we have received so many more submissions featuring BIPOC couples than ever before, and it’s definitely shown through our Audit results. But we need to keep up the pace! So we kindly ask for your help once again to please, submit, submit, submit! 

A Note on Plantation Weddings – As of January 2020, we have ceased publishing any wedding or styled shoot content that occurred at a plantation venue. Despite our best efforts and due diligence, some venues with a history of slavery have admittedly slipped through the cracks. This is why we have since created a mandatory checkbox for vendors when submitting a feature to us that confirms the images were not taken at a plantation venue. We have been consulting with a professional for the last few months and working with our Diversity Panel specifically on this sensitive subject – so you can expect more to come on this soon.

Promise 4: Educate and empower our staff to take action against racism in our industry

We believe that change begins with us, not just as an organization, but also as a group of individuals who represent Style Me Pretty. We know it’s incredibly important to educate ourselves on the systemic racism faced by Black individuals, and use both our individual and collective voices to take a stand.

As part of our internal commitment, we’ve opened up the conversation within our team to discuss how we can be a true partner to the BIPOC communities, and created these 6 promises together as a pact for us to all do better. We’ve encouraged every member of our team to be part of this movement by taking time to do their research, contribute to our diversity panel discussions, and attend webinars so they can make changes within their day to day processes that have previously reinforced the inequality within our industry.

Finally we have made a donation in each of our employee’s names to the Black Lives Matter cause of their choice. Each year, we will continue to do the same, giving each employee $100 to donate to the charitable organization of their choice. We believe that words without action are fleeting in the wind, so if you can we encourage you to also join us in donating to one of the following organizations: 

Promise 5: Incorporate a wider range of voices and increase BIPOC authors and contributors throughout SMP

In and effort to incorporate a wider range of voices and increase BIPOC authors and contributors throughout SMP, we’ve brought on 4 wonderful contract writers, all of whom are a part of the BIPOC community, to contribute 101 tip-driven content on an ongoing basis, further establishing themselves as experts in their field. We’re excited to continue recruiting new vendors as we move forward with this initiative – sharing their talent, wisdom, tips and tricks with our readers! Promise 6: Develop a Diversity Panel with our vendor partners to keep the conversation top of mind

In our final promise, we committed to keeping the conversation going and ensuring we don’t just speak about change – but actually make it happen. Since then, we’ve assembled a Diversity Panel consisting of the most incredible group of professionals, representing BIPOC voices and views within our industry, who continue to hold us accountable for the promises we’ve made. To ensure our commitments align with their current needs, we plan to host one Diversity Panel discussion per quarter. During our past two meetings, we’ve been fortunate enough to listen to their stories, learn how to become a better ally, and collaborate to foster the conversation into meaningful action. For example, as a result of our past discussions, we have actioned the above mentioned items – such as adding an optional ethnicity indicator on our Little Black Book membership application, adding the mandatory ‘non-plantation wedding’ checkbox for submissions, and hiring 4 BIPOC contributing authors to the SMP team to name a few.

Our Diversity Panelists have brought incredibly important topics to the table, ranging from what terminology to use when speaking about BIPOC couples and individuals, all the way to how our industry can foster the growth of new and budding BIPOC vendors. Raw reactions and unfiltered opinions flow openly as Panelists have discussed personal experiences working at specific venues with histories that are extremely hurtful to Black vendors. They’ve expressed their concerns about the lack of representation for LGBTQ content on social media, and their frustrations surrounding the overall absence of sufficient diversity demonstrated at industry-wide events. Our panelists have given us a better idea of how to measure the success in our Promises, continue to educate us on the severity of the issues they face, and encourage us to take our place as a leader in our community – further holding us accountable for the commitments we’ve made.

A Venue Change 10 Days Before This Couple Said I Do And You Wouldn’t Have Even Known!

You would never guess by looking at the below, stunning imagery by atmosphere, that this couple had to change their venue just 10 days before they tied the knot, after the pandemic already forced them to change their original date! Dream Weddings Europe planned the couples picture-perfect day with florals by Decorelle who created striking floral arrangements of red and pink hues that emanated feelings of love, passion, and strength. Held at Forte Da Cruz, a fortress by the sea this hopeful and happy couple said I do with 50 of their closest family and friends who traveled to Portugal from all around Europe…a true testament of love.

From Dream Weddings EuropeShirley and Kweku are a French couple from Strasbourg. After their engagement at the beginning of 2019, their first option for a destination wedding was Morocco, but during the first stages of wedding planning they realized it was not exactly what they were looking forward to, and a friend suggested them Portugal as an option for their wedding destination. Accidentally, Shirley and Kweku found Dream Weddings Europe in their Google searchings, and they decided very quickly to get married in Portugal. The beautiful couple dreamt about a magical wedding date – 20th June 2020. Of course, many couples in 2019 were dreaming about a special wedding in 2020 and we didn’t find many venues available for their date. But after some destination inspections, Shirley and Kweku found the right venue.

All the planning process was such a pleasure! Because S&K are such kind and nice people. Any wedding planner can just dream about such lovely clients! But then Coronavirus came. Until the end of May, we were dreaming to still have a wedding on the 20th June 2020, but of course, it didn’t happen. We postponed the wedding to the 9th October 2020. We should say that S&K are not only nice people, they are also very smart and very positive. And this is so important during COVID times. We chatted frequently by messages and video calls and we all always believed this wedding would happen.

But, ten days before the wedding, when we were thinking that everything was finally under control, the venue said they couldn’t accommodate the wedding or a party at all. We immediately started looking for an option and found another venue nearby – Forte da Cruz (which was not available for the original date). And it was available! We readily made all changes necessary to the wedding design, logistics and timings and we had such a great wedding! 50 guests from all around Europe came to Portugal to celebrate this day with Shirley and Kweku. All their dreams became true! And it was one of the most beautiful and happy weddings we have ever planned.

An Intimate Backyard, Chicago Wedding Incorporating Special Family Heirlooms!

When COVID throws you curves, sometimes you just bend with them like this bride and groom who changed their downtown Chicago wedding to an intimate wedding at the bride’s childhood home. The couple got to incorporate special family heirlooms throughout the day, like the mother of the bride and godmother’s wedding china and silver and reurposing both of their parents wedding cake topper! Classic blooms by Willow Florists adorned the ceremony arch as the couple said I Do and Emilia Jane Photography captured all of the magic!…and now the happy couple get to do it all over again this year with a bigger celebration!

From the Bride…After five years of dating, Marc proposed in April of 2019 while we were on vacation in Malibu, CA. Over the next 11 months, we planned our dream of a downtown Chicago wedding set for July 18th, 2020. Our plans most definitely changed but our wedding date did not. The alternative was an intimate wedding at my childhood home. In only six weeks we planned what would be without a doubt the most memorable day of our lives. It was a day filled with an unimaginable amount of happiness as we exchanged our vows in front of 30 family members. In a time when the world seems upside down it truly made us realize what’s important in life and gave us the most unexpected yet meaningful wedding of all time. How lucky are we to be able to celebrate our wedding day twice, with two different weddings. We can’t wait to do it all over again in 2021 but until then there is one thing I know for sure- there is no place like home.

It turns out there is beauty in changing your plans. We loved the extra detail that we were able to incorporate. For our table setting we used my Mother and Godmother’s wedding china and silver, our dear friend calligraphed the seating arrangements, and one of our family friends officiated our ceremony. Both of our parents were married in the year 1975 and looking through their wedding albums we noticed they both had the same cake topper on their wedding cakes. We were able to repurpose theirs and make it ours too.

We used music throughout the day to remember our loved ones who couldn’t be with us. Marc’s late father Randy was the biggest Beatles fan, so a string duo played “In My Life” as I walked down the aisle and our ceremony was concluded with “All You Need Is Love”. We shared our first dance to “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole, which was also Marc’s grandparent’s song.

As a bridal consultant for Vera Wang Chicago, I decided on a simple, yet classic crepe slip gown from the Vera Wang Fall 2020 Collection. I wanted to add something unexpected and decided on an Ivory blazer with satin lapels. It was customized for me with the black embroidered words “I DO”- a signature theme found throughout the collection. Adding this over my shoulder made for some of my favorite photos and looked so high fashion especially in our black and white photos.

Charlotte’s Zoom Birthday Party

Editor’s Note: Coming up with creative ways to make sure those around you are celebrated is the name of the game in the new pandemic climate we find ourselves in. This adorable zoom 4th birthday party does just that! It’s festive, safe, and totally inspiring. Take a look!

In the midst of the pandemic, new types of celebrations are taking place. I absolutely loved photographing Charlotte’s Zoom Birthday party.

Her mom, who is also a talented event planner, created this intimate yet whimsical celebration. One that I will personally remember forever as historic documentation of life during COVID -19.

The theme was trolls, so of course, our micro party was hosted online by a real Troll! Charlotte’s friends gathered remotely for the event and danced together. They even made handmade gifts for her. After a couple of hours of games and dancing, Charlotte made a wish and blew the candles.

She was the happiest little girl in the world! All of her friends received a party box delivered contactless and kept the party on at home. This was one of my favorite events ever, I’m so lucky I got to document it.

As a Chinese-American artist it’s always been important for me to showcase traditional Chinese art and culture, especially as I have been taught and inspired by Chinese history and art since I was young. I want Chinese American women to know that their culture is beautiful, meaningful and accessible – something they can easily incorporate into their wedding to honor their heritage, if they choose to do so. We dressed our model in East Meets Dress gowns, and created hair and makeup looks inspired by Chinese wedding traditions throughout history. Some ideas to incorporate Chinese heritage into your wedding include… 

 

1. Think about wearing multiple dresses during your wedding day and wear a traditional Chinese wedding dress, or cheongsam as one of your outfits.

 

2. Host a tea ceremony for your family. A tea ceremony is the traditional way for Chinese brides and grooms to thank and honor each others families.

 

3. Hire lion dancers as entertainment for your reception – wow your guests with this bright, color and entertaining show. Live dancers, dressed as lions and dragons dance to celebratory music and weave their way amongst guests, they can even help lead everyone to the dance floor if you need a fun transition.

 

4. Serve traditional wedding sweets such as bridal pastries and red bean soup for dessert. Even if you’re having a western meal, switch up your dessert by incorporating traditional Chinese favorites as an option for guests to try.

Here’s Why We’re Welcoming Jewel Toned Color Palettes With Open Arms in 2021

There’s no wonder why the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia are one of the most beautiful and iconic parts of the American landscape…OR why countless couples are drawn to hosting their weddings amidst the mountains transforming with fall color. With the incredible design help of Wild Fleurette, this mid-November shoot at The Ivy Rose Barn showcases how beautiful a fall wedding can be, even after the leaves have fallen to the ground. We just can’t help but crush hard on the vibrant floral entryway that added visual interest to an otherwise simple greenhouse and the unbe-leaf-able flatlays inspired by Sugared Fig Paperie’s invitation suite. From Nicole Colwell Photography… Here in the Blue Ridge Mountains couples are drawn to hosting their wedding in the fall. However, Mother Nature is moody here in SWVA. One day in October the temperature will be 85 and the next day 40 degrees and our leaves are vibrant and full for weeks at a time or a wind storm can make fall disappear over night.

With this in mind we planned an editorial in mid November to showcase how beautiful a fall wedding can be even after the leaves have fallen to the ground.

Our inspiration was driven by the natural beauty that surrounded the greenhouse. We love fall weddings but didn’t want our design to be too predictable. We decided on a more vibrant color pallet, with jewel tones, mixed with different textures and florals that are jaw dropping.

Winter Wonderland Baby Shower

Editor’s Note: This blissful wintery wonderland of a baby shower actually makes us almost happy to have an extended winter this year! Take a look, draw in all kinds of inspiration, perhaps put on some swanky jazz music, and enjoy all the details of this Winter Wonderland Baby Shower.

From petite treats to glittery tablescapes, no detail was left unnoticed at this gorgeous couples’ baby shower.

And if we do say so ourselves, personalized acrylic details have never been fitting than with this party theme! The snowflake ornaments actually made us gasp a little bit with how gorgeous they are!

The color scheme made you truly feel like you were walking in a winter wonderland. From lush linens to crips florals and gorgeous table settings, the whole set-up was jaw-dropping.

And to top off a truly well-thought-out event, just take a little peek at the hot chocolate bar. Truly, it is a masterpiece.
