Rustic Glamour In The Rocky Mountains

I can’t think of a more elegant way for two worlds to collide than a black-tie event in the rocky mountains. I can see it now: hiking the sinewy trails in a beautiful Jenny Packham gown. Perfection! But we expect nothing less when Leslie Lukas Weddings & Events has a hand it in. And thanks to Lauren Brown Photography’s handiwork, there’s a gallery full of drop-dead-gorgeous details for the reveling.

From Leslie Lukas Weddings & EventsBig Sky goes city glamour. Barbra and Dave could not have been any sweeter to work with. Every step of the way validated why we plan and designs weddings. From concept to completion we took them through the process, taking into account they wanted to blend city chic with rustic influences from the rocky mountains–which were evident in the stunning backdrop. A black-tie affair, the blending of city chic with rustic Montana was achieved through elegant fresh florals, a classic car by Gerrard Classic Auto Collection, an incredible wedding gown by Jenny Packam, and tons of details that brought the two styles together. Rustic elegance at its finest. Barbra’s father owns a men’s store in Butte, Montana- Wein’s Men’s Store, where they got their sharp tuxes from.

Traditional Ballroom Wedding at The University Club

You know you are in for a treat when the bride describes her wedding as The Royal Wedding meets Harry Potter.  Think traditional stylings meets crazy cool florals from Virginia Wolff meets a Lazaro gown that will seriously take your breath away, all with a punch of pink hues to keep things stylishly interesting.  See it all captured by Oana Sweeney of OANAFOTO right here.

From the Bride… I imagined a romantic, fairytale day for the wedding. I believe I got my fairytale ending, along with much, much more. I could not imagine a better day surrounded by the people I love most. Friends and family were everywhere I looked, from the moment I woke up (and my handsome groom had his best man deliver me Starbucks in bed) to the moment I rode off in a horse and carriage, waving to my parents amidst the crowd. The bridesmaids were dressed in blush to add a soft, romantic touch. The flowers had an English garden feel to them, with the soft romanticism of roses and light colors tightly bound in circular plumes on top of each table. The room was simply magical with the high ceilings, lit crests, and wooden beams. It felt like a royal wedding with a Harry Potter twist to it. I felt like the centerpiece with my princess, A-line gown swirling about me all night while I danced to live music, cut the simply elegant, towering cake, and made toasts to love, friendship, and family. The day went by without a hitch in the plans, and the night finished with a memorable exit.  The special details include: My mothers’ sleeve from her wedding gown and my grandmother’s brooch both attached to my bouquet, and the end of the evening topping off the night with Don and I riding off into the distance in a horse and carriage.

Rustic Elegance in the Hill Country

This is one of those crazy amazing weddings that takes the term “heartwarming” and totally kicks it up a notch, from the bride and groom’s adorable story (high school sweethearts reconnected after college) to the carefully thought out details ripe with meaning.  It’s a day that is as amazing as it is pretty, and thanks to a talented team of vendors (think Austin CateringPetals, Ink. and Francis Joseph Photography), we can share in all of the beauty.  See it here.

From the Bride… When Doug proposed with a rose gold engagement ring underneath the 100-year-old oak tree in our backyard, it was sort of implied that we would have an outdoor wedding and I couldn’t wait to start planning! As high school sweethearts who reconnected after college, we had known each other since we were kids; we met when I was 15 and he was 17. His brother and best man joked at the wedding that we were lucky to have each other, and luckier still that our crazy parents let us go our on our first date so many years ago! We really wanted our wedding to be uniquely us, and to be a celebration of all the hard times that we have overcome, the joys we have shared and the beautiful unknown that is the future. We made sure to use as many important family members and friends as possible when planning our wedding. My aunt sang and loaned me some jewelry to wear and our close family friend officiated the wedding. We also wanted to make sure we tried to keep all of our vendors local and support small business owners.

Sadly, my dad passed away a few years ago, so we tried to incorporate memories of him into our day as well. I was so lucky to be walked down the aisle by my brother and then to get to dance my father/daughter dance with my adorable grandfather. My dad used to love my mother-in-law’s homemade grape jelly, so as a favor my mother-in-law made awesome grape jelly for all the guests to take home.

For our guestbook we had all the guests sign a thick piece of wood. Once we returned home from the honeymoon Doug sealed the board, drilled holes into it, and it is now hanging as a swing beneath the tree where he proposed. We loved this idea and every time we go out in our backyard it is happy reminder of our proposal and our wedding!

After much searching we fell in love with Stonehouse Villa for our ceremony and reception. A design house turned venue, this historic building and grounds had the rustic feel outdoors, complimented by modern decor and touches inside. The event manager, Christina, made our life incredibly easy by allowing us to book quickly and visit a few times to get those details in our heads just right. We even went to far as to use a ceremony site that they had never done before, but it turned out just great!

After picking our venue we set out to find a photographer who shared out vision. We found that in Francis Joseph Photography. His attention to detail and journalistic style was perfect for what we wanted. We also knew he was the one because he braved our request to do our engagements out at the family ranch and he did it with style, grace and a fedora. We were so lucky to have him capture all the candid and emotional photos. We chose to do a first look, because we knew that stress would be high and we both wanted to be as ready as possible to say our vows without totally losing it (we wrote our own vows). I can say that our first look photos might be my favorite of the day, because they are so real. I can just hear the words we were saying even as I flip through the photos many months later.

As for food, there was no question but to go with Austin Catering. The capable and amazing owner is a friend of the family and her attention to detail is impeccable. Kristin brought our tastes together and created a truly amazing menu based on fresh local foods that both Doug and I loved. The guests raved about the quality and taste of the food all night long. But Kristin’s expertise doesn’t stop there, she was also there to coordinate and tie up all the loose ends. Having Austin Catering there for our food and coordination took away any stress I might have had about our big day. Our cake was very simple and instead of a groom’s cake we choose to do cookies instead since Doug isn’t a big cake fanatic.

I cannot forget to talk about the amazingly talented Gretchen from Petals, Ink. Based out of her funky South Austin studio I knew instantly that Gretchen was going to be incredible. When she didn’t flinch as I rattled off my top requests for flowers (Purple kale, artichokes and succulents) I knew I had found a creative, brave and talented florist. She captured the unique idea we had for non-tradtional flowers while still making sure everything looked elegant and cohesive. Best of all, most of the succulents from the arrangements are growing on the patios of our guests’ and our South Austin home.

Keeping with the style of using people near and dear to our hearts, we used Gertie Glam for hair and make up. When she isn’t out primping music artists and models, Gertie lives next door to Doug and me! She is a wildly talented makeup artist and hair stylist. Gertie glammed up much of the wedding party, the MOB and myself. She kept us all calm and smiling while making sure we looked beautiful. I still swoon over how perfectly she captured my vision of looking like myself, but just prettied up a notch or two.

As for jewelry, it seemed natural to go with Austin native Kendra Scott for bridesmaid jewels. The bridesmaids were able to choose any dress style in a palate of purples from Dessy Group in Lux Chiffon. The matching green Kendra Scott Danielle earrings helped tie everyone together. The house party wore black dresses with purple Danielle earrings. For my jewels I was so blessed to borrow beautiful rose gold pieces from my aunt who owns a jewelry store, Eartworks in Los Altos, California. (She also sang at our wedding! A talented AND successful lady!)  I wanted to wear the understated, but striking pave rose gold hoops with laser cut diamond drops and the antique looking necklace forever! It was a sad day when I had to send those beauties back.

After our heartfelt ceremony it was time to dance and party all night long. We loved working with our DJ Jonathan from Live Oak DJs. He made sure to play a mix of music that made all the generations present feel comfortable dancing. When it was finally time to leave the party we exited to a row of sparklers into the vehicle that Doug took me on our first date in! He had the truck cleaned and made to run again just for our special exit. It was the best surprise and a great ending to our night.

Classic Vineyard Wedding

Classic meets laid-back elegance in this gorgeous Priam Vineyard affair and, let me tell you, it’s awesome. Think rich purple hues, cloudy + romantic skies and drop-dead gorgeous details all designed by the Mother of the Bride (who is obviously amazing).  Oh, and those flower girls?  Totally adorable. See every beautiful moment captured by Alicia Ann Photographers right here.

From Alicia Ann Photographers… Chris and Erika’s vineyard wedding was a perfect one for a late summer/early fall day. They worked tirelessly at creating a concept that would be classic and high-end, but also feel relaxed and “homey” – just like they are. Together, they love going to vineyards and wine tasting, so it was perfectly appropriate that they would want to be married in a vineyard. With a chance of the rain in the forecast, the staff at Priam Vineyard worked quickly to move the hand crafted chuppah under a tent, as well as all the chairs. The tightness and intimacy of the ceremony made it that much more special and their closest friends and family piled in around Chris and Erika as they promised forever to each other. The reception was flawlessly designed by Erika’s mom and executed perfectly by Riverhouse Catering and the dance was hopping all night from the amazing band!

Glitter and Blush Winter Park Wedding at Casa Feliz

We adore Amalie Orrange around these parts, but when she sends us a wedding this pretty, we want to reach through the screen and give her a big fat kiss. Because it’s not everyday that we see a wedding so completely perfect we want to cry. It’s filled to the brim with all the things that make our hearts sing, and you can see it all here.

From Amalie Orrange PhotographyEric and Elena are the sweetest couple, and had the most gorgeous wedding filled with blush, glitter and little Spanish touches everywhere to accent the beautiful Casa Feliz. We met them a few months back and new straight away we were going to love working with this fun couple! Elena with her cute little laugh and Eric with his sweet charm that makes Elena smile from ear to ear.

Erica and Elena met on a co-ed indoor soccer league through mutual friends. Who would have know that the cute girl that Eric played soccer with would turn out to be his wife.

From The Bride…What attracted me to Eric? Personality for sure! He makes me snort, which is my tell all. If you can’t get a snort out of me, then you’re really not that funny.

Eric propsed at an Orlando Magic vs Miami Heat Game. It was so awesome and completely unexpected, which why it probably got the national attention it did. Watch it here : http://abcnews.go.com/m/blogEntry?id=18821719&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F

I wanted my wedding to feel very romantic and feminine, while also having some fun little touches and so I went from there. Becky my amazeballs planner helped me bring my vision to life!

My touch of turquoise everywhere was my favorite design element. It’s my favorite color and I wanted to incorporate it somehow.

I have tons of DIY details! Our table numbers, chalkboards, and bling wrap for chairs. Also, I’m a graphic designer, so I designed all my wedding stationary and menus for our place settings.

The most memorable moment of my wedding day was seeing everything come together. It blew by, but having a moment to walk around with Eric and appreciate everything that we worked towards was awesome. I can honestly say I remember every detail. I especially loved how we set up cocktail hour with the market lighting going from the fountain in the front to the tent.

Wildflower Forest Wedding

When Mirelle Carmichael sends a little something pretty our way, we know it’s not only going to steal our hearts but it’s going to tell a beautiful story of love. And this forest fete? It’s so enchanting, you could almost step right into the lovely imagery, smell the fresh, wild air and hear the glow of laughter and happiness. Feast your eyes on all the lovely right here.

From Mirelle Carmichael Photography… Michel and Jeff flew in from New Zealand for a beautiful destination wedding in the Mariposa forest, where Michel spent her summers as a child. There was so much thought put into every detail of their wedding day, from the event design and florals from the bride’s mother, to the perfect music chosen by the bride’s sister Allie, who is a radio DJ in San Diego. They had 60 of their closest friends and family from around the world there to celebrate with them. One of my favorite parts of the day was when we hiked through fields of wildflowers and into the forest to visit a giant oak tree that Michel used to play at as a child.

French Riviera Garden Wedding

If there’s one lesson we can take away from this wedding, it’s that marrying in the French Riviera is ALWAYS a good idea. From the quiet ceremony nestled in an olive grove to the al fresco reception where good food and wine flowed a’plenty, it’s basically every bride’s dream brought to life, and Katy Lunsford captured every moment to utter perfection. Happy swooning, lovelies!

From the Bride… We met on a little island in the Caribbean whilst both working on different private yachts. He was the dashing Swedish captain and I was the wild and precocious American stewardess and it was love at first date. My original inspiration for the wedding was 1960’s America meets 1920’s France. I wanted to re-create that luxurious lust for entertainment and aesthetic from the twenties and marry it with the grounded natural beauty and community experience that I like to think of the sixties embodying.

After choosing a date, we had to pick a country. I am American, Oskar is Swedish, we met in the Caribbean, and we had chosen to buy our first home in the South of France where many of our friends live. In the end, we picked France, mostly due to it being where the least amount of people were required to fly in long distance. Having the venue sorted so late meant scrambling to plan everything else, and doing this in a new language in a country didn’t make it easier. Plus, I decided early on that I wanted everything unique, everything DIY, no professional help other than catering, AND I wanted it to be very calm and relaxed on the days leading up to the big event. (Anyone reading this who has been married, feel free to laugh loudly and knowingly.)

Needless to say, it was a wild and crazy ride the last week before the wedding. With the help of our amazing officiant we finalized the ceremony two days before, we wrote our vows late at night the night before (but we slept apart!), the venue was still being pieced together until just before the ceremony, the DJ canceled on our way to the wedding, it threatened rain (I had NO rain provision whatsoever as I thought it would ruin the vintage vibe), there wasn’t nearly enough time for photos, half the much laboured over projects never made it out of crates, so many things were missed, so many things were lost…and yet it was the most wonderful, perfect, fabulous, unique, love-filled love fest I could have ever imagined and I wouldn’t change a thing. I married the most incredible man in the world that day and every time I think about it I still get butterflies.

The venue was so full of natural beauty and color that I knew we could keep flowers fairly minimal. I wanted mostly neutrals, whites, and olive green, but no pink. One incredible bridesmaid is a florist extraordinaire and she so kindly did every arrangement and bouquet for the event and they turned out so beautiful! The table was kept fairly simple, with glass chargers, white plates, white napkins, white table cloths and a natural sand colour linen runner which ran the length of all 115 settings! The floral arrangements were set far apart in order to accommodate food, and my love of all things gold was accomplished with a bag of rough chopped gold foil confetti. I also took ordinary white and wooden candle holders and using spray paint and gold glitter, made them a little more interesting. The day of I never actually had time to put it all together as planned but my bridal party took the lead and did an incredible job making my vision come to life, with no direction from me.

Advice: Keep it simple or get help. I was so set on doing everything myself that it ended up making so much more work for the people around me. Had a hired a weekend of coordinator and made even just a few really comprehensive and easy to follow lists, I could have eased the burden on my friends and family and had even more of the vision executed. Also, not every single that has to be complicated. I love all those complicated tiny little details that nobody else probably notices, but if you are more concerned with enjoying the days before hand and the day of, trust me that in the end they aren’t as essential as you think. And in the end, nothing other than looking into your husbands eyes and saying the biggest, most important, most exciting “YES” of your life will matter. Our day was so fun, so beautiful, so happy, so eventful, and my favourite part is still those moments of holding hands and saying our vows.

Nature Inspired Vineyard Wedding

This, my friends, is what we like to call pure perfection.  A breathtaking nature inspired wedding that seamlessly mixes rustic romance and classic elegance, from the stunning Reem Acra gown to the gorgeous chapel to the wooden crates housing the lush florals from Petal And Pod.  It’s basically everything.  See it all captured by Jac And Heath Photography in the full gallery.

From the Bride… We met nine years ago in my parent’s kitchen. Andrew and two of his mates were (welcome) freeloaders at a lunch I prepared for some old school friends. I remember him being very shy and we barely spoke, but his sincere “thank you” and “you’re a great cook” on the way out was very sweet and memorable. We kept bumping into each other through mutual friends and a few weeks later I accidentally asked him out on our first date.

We moved to Sydney a few years into our relationship and started frequenting a little eco-retreat in Wollombi (Hunter Valley) surrounded by bushland and perched overlooking a peaceful valley. Over a number of years it became our place to revive, reconnect and escape the hustle of city life. After finishing my degree in late 2012, I booked Wollombi for us to go and relax for a long weekend. We had just been for a long bike ride and were reclining on the deck being silly and laughing when Andrew went inside for water and came out with a small black box. He sat on the side of my lounge chair and opened the box. I was speechless for quite a while, I mumbled something about wearing daggy shorts and a t-shirt, and of course I said yes. It was a beautiful spontaneous moment, in a place very special to us, it was perfect. There were tears of gratitude.

Andrew had asked my parents’ permission to propose five months prior and with a clear vision he set about to design the perfect ring. The jeweller’s showroom was less than a block from my work right in the middle of Sydney. He spent months sneaking around the city in his carpenter’s clothes attending diamond selection and design meetings; I had no clue.

About six months before we were engaged, I noticed a dress worn to the Golden Globes and for the first (and only) time in my life I could actually imagine wearing a wedding dress. I didn’t think for a second that I would be able to find that dress in Australia, so I searched around Sydney for months trying on everything, and still couldn’t find ‘the one.’  In my desperation, I turned to Google and discovered that my dream gown was available in Australia after all (and in Sydney). It gave me goose bumps to see the stunning Reem Acra gown in person, the beaded cap sleeves were even more breathtaking in person, it was love at first sight.

We broke with tradition and spent the wedding morning together before getting ready separately. We enjoyed a beautiful breakfast in our hotel room and (I’m not going to lie) Andrew watched some of the Bathurst 1000 race over brekkie. We took time to appreciate what was about to happen, it was special to be able to be still and focus on each other. I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

The ceremony took place in a sweet sandstone chapel overlooking vineyards. The open sides of the chapel made the most of the beautiful vineyard estate and the warm weather. The short service was followed by a passage of encouragement read by Andrew’s mother and our vows. We promised to love each other in good times and in bad, when our love is simple and when it’s not. The emotion at end of the ceremony was quite unexpected – feeling and seeing the joy and excitement of the people we love, it was quite overwhelming and we weren’t prepared for that!

The ceremony was followed by a cocktail hour with canapés and lawn games, then a formal three-course dinner at Twine Restaurant. At the last minute, I decided to hire a two piece band to play for the first few hours of the reception; it really enhanced the relaxed vibe we were trying to achieve.  The Aubrey Band were perfection.

My bouquet was made with delicate white ranunculus, pale peach David Austen, garden roses, rosemary, olive foliage, wax flower, berry and gum leaves tied together with linen ribbon. My younger cousin and flower girl had a wax flower crown and her bouquet was a simple bunch of pale peach David Austen roses.

For the reception I wanted to bring the fragrance of the Australian bush indoors, so the focal point on each of the five; communal tables was a rustic flower box filled with free form eucalyptus leaves, roses, ranunculus and rosemary. The tables were also dotted with bottled arrangements that held green button chrysanthemums, daises, baby’s breath and gum leaves. The bridal table was adorned with a lush eucalyptus leaf table garland with pockets of rosemary, ranunculus, garden roses, berries and wax flower. The room smelled incredible!

We wanted the wedding to be a reflection of us both, so first and foremost set out to create a relaxed and fun atmosphere. We both love being outdoors, so we chose a nature inspired wedding theme set in the beautiful wineries and bushland surrounds of Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. I guess you could describe the style as romantic, classic and country.

It was also important for us to incorporate elements of our families and heritage into the details – from the gum leaves in my bouquet which were a nod to Andrew’s upbringing in rural Victoria, to the flower boxes handmade by the carpenters (Andrew, his brother, and me – the foreman!), to the banana cake with passionfruit icing because this Queenslander loves her tropical fruit, and the twine art ‘guest book’ which symbolized our families being linked together.

With the help of our families we did all the planning, styling and decorating ourselves. Andrew, his brother and I made a lot of the decorations together – the noughts and crosses lawn game, the wooden flower boxes, two gift tables, table numbers, the love heart string art ‘guest book’ and the gum tree candle holders on the reception tables. My mum arranged the flowers outside the chapel and on the pews as well as the bottled arrangements on the reception tables. We also co-designed, printed and assembled the wedding invitations, menus, place cards and seating plans ourselves. Because we had a quite a few children at the wedding, we made little party packs to make them feel special. In a chevron-patterned white and brown paper bag they each had: a handmade felt finger puppet, a personalized activity book, crayons, popcorn, lollies, a towelette, bubble blowers and cute animal stickers.

There was a lot of sentiment in our wedding day details, we surrounded ourselves with the special people and pieces that tell our story. The pastor we chose to take the ceremony was Andrew’s cousin, he and his wife are such an inspiration for our marriage. The pen we signed our marriage certificate with was handmade by dear a friend and neighbor of Andrew’s family in rural Victoria. Our antique cake knife originally belonged to Andrew’s great great grandmother and has been cherished by each generation. My ‘something blue’ was a hair pin given to me when I was a girl by my beloved aunt who passed away just a few months before the wedding – she was such a special lady and I wore it to remember her. One of my favourite details was a large frame holding eight photos of our grandparents, parents and siblings’ wedding days – it was our tribute to the important marriages in our lives that have shaped who we are.

We honeymooned in California, Nevada, New York and Mexico for three weeks, it was packed with hiking, people-watching, sight-seeing, yoga, cross fit, cooking classes, markets, bike riding, fabulous restaurants, luxurious hotels, Halloween and Día de Muertos festivals in Mexico, beach, coconuts, releasing newborn turtles into the ocean and meeting new people along the way. It was a blast!

Foggy Chicago Skyline Engagement Session

This captivating e-sesh from Yazy Jo has induced a blushing frenzy on me today. Filled with so many sweet kisses, this adorable duo is wrapped up in a foggy blanket of love that can only be described as utter romance. You may want to carve out a chunk of your afternoon for this one, lovelies. It’s a doozy.

From the beautiful Bride-to-be… When it came to the location for our engagement shoot, Lincoln Park was an easy decision. Our first apartment together was only a few blocks away, and we lived there for two years. It’s such a pretty area, especially in the spring when everything is in full bloom. We wanted to get a few photos with the skyline in the background, so Yazy suggested stopping by Northerly Island by the Adler Planetarium. It was a really foggy day, which made for some hauntingly beautiful photos by the lake. It was freezing, but a lot of fun!

Mid Century Modern Wedding at the Parker

You all might need to sit down for this one. It’s midcentury modern meets Palm Springs garden glam photographed by Michael Radford. And don’t even get me started on two of the most dapper Grooms we’ve come across. Their celebration is one of love and beautiful design at the hands of Celebrations Of Joy + Maggie Jensen Event Floral Design. If you are all for an affair dripping in chandeliers, succulents and gold, then you’ll want to have a look right here.

From Celebrations Of JoyPhillip and Billy are a bi-national couple, Phillip is a Brit and Billy is American, and they asked us to help them create an intimate celebration for their California wedding with a twist: Gene Autry Cowboy meets Mid-Century Modern! They chose to have their ceremony and reception at the historic Gene Autry House on the grounds of the Parker Palm Springs, and wanted the style and theme of the wedding to reflect the location and be an intimate beautiful celebration for 30 of their closest family and friends. We played with all the details: from their web site, to the menu cards, to the guest book poster of Gene Autry the guests signed as they arrived, yet also kept the décor elegant and reflective of the mid-century modern style of the venue. As they exchanged vows, the Grooms stood before a curtain of ribbons that flowed in the breeze. With the team of Maggie Jensen Floral Design and Classic Party Rentals we created one long table for the reception framed by chandeliers. The table top reflected the California desert with sage linens, a mid-century modern motif runner from Wildflower Linens, lots of succulents and of course Billy Balls, in reflective gold vessels.

Behind the Scenes with Truvelle

A creative who is passionate about all things fashion? I can get behind that. A creative who is passionate about all things fashion and has a hedgehog as a pet? I do believe we need to be BFF’s. And fast. Truvelle, the up and coming Vancouver based bridal designer, is making waves in the wedding world and for good reason! The girl is oh so talented. And today we’re teaming up with Rose Dykstra for a behind the scenes peek.

From Rose Dykstra… Truvelle is an up-and-coming bridal designer based out of a live/work studio in Gastown, a historic downtown neighborhood in Vancouver. The building she resides in is unique in that it is a live/work concept, so there are many small business owners who live and create within it.

Truvelle has been gaining popularity over the past year, with a number of international bridal boutiques now carrying Gabby’s collections along with many styled and wedding features online and in print. I’ve asked Gabby to write a little bit more about herself below!

On herself:
I’m Gaby, the girl behind Vancouver based bridal line “Truvelle”.

On her style:
My style is ever changing and my home will follow suit, but right now I’m crazy for negative space and functional elements. Interiors with good bones and natural light are key.

On what she loves most about her home:
My home is also my workplace, so I’m so happy that I’ve managed to create a space that serves each purpose with grace and balance. My work is a huge part of my identity, so having a live/work has both simplified my life and given me comfort in my surroundings.

On what she had to overcome:
I had moved into this space following a two month stint in Europe, and of course I needed to check out that expensive Parisian bakery and take classes at one of the top fashion schools in the world. Needless to say, I was on a very tight budget and faced with over 1000 square feet of possibilities. In hindsight, my thin wallet worked to my advantage. I was forced to start with necessities and creatively stretch my dollar for all that it was worth. Decorating was a slow process, but it gave me time to be thoughtful with every element added. Good things really do take time.

Classic Black and White Wedding Inspiration

I always come back to a simple black and white color palette. It’s a go-to that stands the test of time whether we’re talking about home decor, fashion or wedding design. And this inspiration shoot is total proof. It’s classic elegance crafted by Clayton Austin and Taylor Lord along with green filled florals by Without Wax Katy, that prove black and white are here to stay.

That gorgeous engagement session inspiration can only be outdone by the wedding shoot that followed suit. Have a look at the handiwork of all these great talents who brought our favorite black and white color combo to life.

From Love Is A Bird PhotographyWhen Taylor Lord and I decided to host a small intimate workshop in our hometown of Austin, Texas we knew we would want to style the shoots to perfection. With a modern classic vibe in mind we focused on shades of blacks, whites, and grays while pulling in the greens from the beautiful ivy covered walls and concrete architecture of South Congress Street. The idea was that for the engagement session the groom would wear varying shades of black while she wore white and then switching it up for the wedding day shoot with her in an amazing black gown from Free People and him in a crisp white Vera Wang tuxedo jacket and a black velvet bow tie. Taylor made the concrete candle pillars in different sizes and heights giving the table a sense of dimension while Katy from Without Wax Katy did an incredible job with the green table runner, bouquet, and boutonnieres. I made the cake finishing it with stark black butter cream icing. Finally we tied everything together using black velvet ribbon throughout the shoot.

From Without Wax KatyIt’s in letting the stunning landscape do all the talking, with a few well-edited nods of color and style infused along the way that makes everything come together flawlessly. The 12 foot runner is ripe with layers of eucalyptus foliage, texture and organic goodness. It seamlessly blends in with the beauty of the natural surroundings with the coordination of modern details set in the middle of this Austin oasis. Focusing on a simple and clean color palette of white, green, black and gray, the bouquet of soft peonies, ranunculus and anemones contrasted in all the right ways with the black wedding gown. From the extraordinary play on black and white to the floral details on the cake and in bride’s hair, this styled workshop is a sure fire way to find to find yourself lost in its beauty for hours on end.

Nutella Banana Bread

I’ve been making this nutella banana bread for years now (in fact, I originally posted it on my own blog way back when in 2011, though the photos have since been updated). It’s become somewhat of a staple around here, and for good reason. The stuff is ridiculous! As in, I try to only make it occasionally as I’ve been known to devour the whole thing in one sitting (I judge myself – but one taste and I know you’ll understand).

Serves 8Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups mashed ripe banana
  • 1/3 cup skim milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 3/4 heaping cup Nutella
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line an 8" x 4" loaf pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda & salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream together sugar and butter with mixer at medium speed until blended. Add eggs, beating well after each egg.
  4. Add banana, milk and vanilla and blend.
  5. Slowly add flour mixture (I did it in three parts), mixing in between until incorporated (but don't overmix!)
  6. Warm nutella in oven or microwave until softened. Add 1 cup of the banana bread mixture and stir until combined.
  7. Alternate spooning banana bread mixture and nutella batter into the loaf pan.
  8. Using a knife, swirl together the two mixtures.
  9. Bake for 1 hour - it should be a tiny bit undercooked as it will continue to cook in the pan.
  10. Let cool for 15 minutes and then transfer to wire rack.

Sunny Inspiration Shoot At Jardin Du Soleil

Even if I closed my eyes and tried real hard, I couldn’t envision a more beautiful place to be than a field of lavender. I just imagine the sun setting over an expanse of purple coursing in the wind. Its as picture-perfect as it gets. And, thanks to the stylings of The Wedding Project and photographers Phreckleface Photography and Katrina Amburgey Photography, we can enjoy a taste of it here.

Romantic

From Katrina Amburgey Photography… The theme for this shoot was “Upcycled Vintage” and it was located in a beautiful lavender field. The reason we went with this theme is because I love the romantic feel of vintage touches but also wanted to keep things affordable and not too far of a reach for brides planning their big day. I made this possible by using my great grandmas antique china, using wedding chicks for the invitations, menu and place cards and using a local events rental company for the details (vs brides buying their own). Together paired with a borrowed dress from a past client, a young couple in love and a beautiful lavender field close to sunset the result was amazing!
