DIY Wedding In Paradise From Widdis Photography

Yesterday we brought you one of Kathy and Brian Widdis’ summer weddings that took place at Caberfae Peaks Ski Resort. Thought that was kind of cool (to have a summer wedding at a ski resort) and the wedding was just so pretty!  Today, we have another wedding from Widdis Photography that was this fall. Brandi and Neil had always talked about having a destination wedding, but when it got down to planning, they decided that having their family and friends surrounding them on their wedding day was way more important than an exotic location. So, they created their own little paradise in Michigan where they could celebrate with their loved ones!

from the beautiful bride …

Neil and I have been together for seven years and during our time together, we always pictured our wedding on a beach on some remote tropical island. But after Neil proposed, we started working out the logistics of what it meant to plan a destination wedding during a recession. We realized that most (if not all) of our family would be unable to attend…which was completely unacceptable for both of us. So rather than fight the reality of our situation, we decided to simply roll with it.

Neil’s dad lives in a subdivision that maintains a private beach on Wing Lake (Bloomfield, MI) and after getting approval from their home owner’s association to host a large-scale event, plans got underway. Our goal was to create a comfortable, casual atmosphere, similar to what you would experience at a tropical wedding — great food, good music, festive drinks…all outside on the beach!

Once Neil and I chose the date in September, we were off! At once, my graphic-designing brain kicked into high gear. I scoured wedding blog after wedding blog, getting validation that a bride really could take care of most of the details herself, “borrowing” a few ideas along the way (like thank you notes at each place setting). I chose colors that would fit with the fall date but could easily reflect the beach atmosphere we were trying to create — chocolate brown and wasabi green. The bright fresh green was the perfect color because it allowed me to pick flowers like dendrobium orchids and funky, modern spider mums. And chocolate brown grounded the event in elegance…giving me a palette of perfect neutrals to create details like the burlap table runners, the sand, the palm fronds. We wanted every single detail to feel deliberate, hand-chosen, and reflect us…casually and elegantly. We even went so far as to name all sixteen tables with names of locations we had at one point discussed as possibilities for our destination wedding, and then created a seating chart welcoming our guests to “Our own private paradise.”

Ultimately, because we were willing to compromise our “fantasy” to make sure our family was present at our special day, they all stepped up to help; the execution of all the details really became a family affair. My mother baked for months to give us a dessert table she was proud of. She also added the green accents to the girls’ brown dresses and even created the flower girls’ pomanders out of tulle and pearls. Neil’s mother created the flower garlands that hung on the bamboo arbor we built over the foot bridge to the island where we held the ceremony. Neil’s sister painted all of the signs directing our guests to the games, ceremony, etc and really made them more than just utilitarian. Neil’s step-mother created the arrangements that flanked us during the ceremony. My girlfriends came over a few days before, and we arranged all of the flowers and built the capiz shell napkin ring/place cards. And my exceptionally talented sister sang the song for our first dance: Make you feel my love by Bob Dylan. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house! I couldn’t have done it all without all of their help, and our day certainly wouldn’t have been as memorable.

And for those of you who may be interested in Brandi and Neil’s tropical inspired menu …

Our caterer jumped on board with the theme, making suggestions for tropically-inspired stations that would allow our guests to casually meander through the buffet:

Lakeside Luau ~Petite Pulled Pork Sandwich (petite onion rolls and barbecue braised pork garnished topped with coleslaw; Gorgeous Grilled Vegetable Display (served with roasted garlic-lemongrass aïoli); Polynesian Chicken Skewers (seared in pineapple glaze); Sesame Noodle Salad (shredded red cabbage, julienne bell peppers, scallions, crisp peas, and fresh cilantro tossed with teriyaki sesame dressing)

Big Island BBQ ~ Mango Grilled;  Salmon Maui Onion Salad (carrots, cucumber and radish sprouts with lime-sherry vinaigrette); Ginger-Soy Grilled Flank Steak (served with jasmine rice and stir-fried vegetables); Asian Green Salad (mixed greens, mandarin oranges, crispy chow mein noodles and teriyaki vinaigrette)

A few parting words from Brandi …

I can’t imagine changing a single detail of our special day. It was so comfortable, and I truly believe our guests had an amazing time. And as you can see in Kathy’s fantastic photos, Neil and I certainly did.

Our thanks to Kathy at Widdis Photography and congrats to Brandi and Neil!!

Michigan Wedding At Caberfae Peaks From Widdis Photography

Today’s featured wedding just goes to show you that ski resorts aren’t just for winter weddings!  Case in point …

Mary Jane and Jim were married at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Cadillac, Michigan on July 25th, 2009.  The reception that followed was at her family’s Ski and Golf Resort. A summer wedding at a ski resort!

Sent to us by LBB members Brian & Kathy Widdis, this beautiful summer wedding is the perfect blend of modern and chic elegance paired with the rustic setting of the resort.

Mary Jane has shared a bit of their inspiration with us …

I was raised at Caberfae Peaks, literally! I learned to ski when I was two-years-old and from there on out, I spent all day, everyday in the winter out at Caberfae.  Sometimes just hanging around or sometimes working with my dad, but most of the time skiing.  So even though Jim and I reside in Chicago now, when we got engaged it seemed like the natural thing to have our wedding in northern Michigan at the ski resort were I was born and raised.  Given that it is our family business it made the wedding even more sentimental and personal.

Our theme was sort of “big city meets small ski town”. We were aiming for a rustic elegance – the beauty and uniqueness of a Chicago wedding with the intimacy of northern Michigan. It was truly perfect! We had many guests from Chicago who had never traveled that far north, so we played up the northern Michigan theme. We wanted to give them the true feel of Michigan with the green apples filled tall centerpieces, the apple candles, the dried cherries in their welcome bags and my personal favorite, the lift ticket escort card station!

We made our own version of a Caberfae lift ticket with our guests’ table number and a thank you message on the back.  They were hung on black ribbon between our skis and poles nestled in a chair lift draped in “snow” toile.

The elegance of the big city came from the apple green damask pattern that we used on all of the printed material, from the invitations, to the programs, menus, and donation cards.

The bridesmaids wore sophisticated, black cocktail dresses, but set-off  by a crisp apple green sash and lush bouquets of pink calla lilies, dahlias with splashes of fuchsia and orange roses.

Jim and I both have a serious sweet tooth, so a candy bar was one thing we had to have!  The green and pink candy looked gorgeous in the giant apothecary jars labeled with the green and black damask signs, it had an old-fashioned candy store feel.  One of my favorite memories is taking all 10 of my nieces and nephews to fill up their bags with candy; they were in heaven!

I loved the pink and chartreuse lanterns hanging from the center of the tent, giving the space a truly romantic feel.  It was magical when the sun went down and the tent glowed from the lantern’s light.   Dancing with Jim under that glow is something I’ll never forget. It was the happy ending to our fairy tale wedding!

Congratulations to the happy couple and THANKS a bunch to Widdis Photography for providing the photos of their beautiful wedding day!

I love all of your color combinations, and the weddings on your blog were just gorgeous! I couldn’t find my exact color combo, navy blue and fuchsia with bright green accents, but I know you could easily pull these off. My fiance and I want to give away spiced pecans. As a little girl, I can remember picking up and shelling pecans from my Grandfather’s yard. When I met my fiance, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he loved spiced pecans, a favorite of my family, too!! I’ve made spiced pecans for him on several occasions, and I always make them around Christmas time. We would love to share this family favorite with our wedding guests, and what a beautiful way to do so with Dooby Design Group’s favor boxes.

Real Wedding: Jennifer and Scott, III

There is just something so charming about today’s first featured wedding. The camp-style ambiance, the sweet little bridal party, the perfectly approachable decor. I love when couples let the simplicity of their personalities come through and design a wedding that is absolutely perfect for their own life, their own love.

q weddings

From Q WeddingsFriends chipped in and helped decorate the tent, the reception and the cocktail tent. Jenifer had been spending a lot of time on eBay, buying up hoards of vintage blue mason jars. Friends filled the jars with fresh-cut wildflowers, including blue thistles. She also found someone who had just gotten married and was selling a bunch of Japanese lanterns. After the wedding, Jenifer had already located someone else who was getting married, so she sold the lanterns again. Both economical and eco-conscious.

q weddings

Thank you so very much to Jennifer and Scott for letting us share in the celebration. And to Suzi of Q Weddings…we are forever thrilled by your work!

Real Wedding: Jennifer and Scott, II

Loving how approachable this wedding is…with pretty details, effortless elegance and a sense of family and friends. Just as a wedding should be. Shot by the wonderful Q Weddings, the affair is all about simple, easy beauty…

q weddings

The location had cabins with a real rustic feel, lending to a laid back weekend. Picture this: a real log cabin (with needlepoint samplers) just steps from the beach! It felt like being at a summer camp. Jenifer and Scott asked their many nieces and nephews to be in the bridal party. Such an honor… the kids were all abuzz about their special role in the wedding.

q weddings

Another eBay find and so unique: porcelain flower pins. These were very popular in the 60s. It was a great way to give everyone flowers to wear, and they got to take them home. As for her dress, Jenifer found a seamstress who, for a number of years, had been saving pieces of vintage fabric and laces. The seamstress (who is definitely talented!) stitched all the pieces together into Jenifer’s dress. It was a work of art and labor of love.

A bit more on the way!

Real Wedding: Jennifer and Scott

So I took the day off yesterday! That just might be the first time in two years that I’ve randomly played hookie. And it was great…all day of doing absolutely nothing. Perfection.

But, I am back today with tons of eye candy and inspiration, with a real wedding, some fun sneak peeks and so much more! The first wedding was sent to me by the oh so talented talented Suzi Q of the fabulous Q Weddings. It’s all about rustic, approachable chicness…

kim lang real wedding

The wedding took place at Gintara Resort in Union Pier, Michigan on October 11th of 2008. The couple decided to have a destination wedding where they would be surrounded by friends, family and great danes. Jenifer rescues stray cats and Scott rescues great danes. They included their furry friends in their celebration. They even included cats and dogs on their invites and towels they gave as favors. The best part: their ring bearer was Blue (who was more interested in napping during the ceremony).

Much more on the way!

Real Wedding: Sabiha and Julius at Weller’s Carriage House

Earlier today, we showed you a charming highlight video of Sabiha and Julius’ wedding day, produced by Take 1 Productions. If you haven’t already seen it, we do hope you’ll take a look. If ever two people were able to take things in stride, it was this couple. Even though it ‘rained on their parade’ … they simply went forward with the back-up plan and everything turned out lovely!

And we are very happy to say that their wedding photographer, Arising Images is also a Little Black Book member … so we have more gorgeous shots from the day …

Photography by Arising Images

Sabiha and Julius were married at Wellers Carriage House in Saline, Michigan. If you watched their wedding film, you’ll see that they thought they might be able to beat the rain … but right as the ceremony started, they all had to make a mad dash for cover!

These images from Prem at Arising Images are just stunning!

As you’ll see below, the rain did nothing to dampen the spirit of the celebration or the joy shared between Sabiha and Julius on this oh-so-special day!

“rain happens …”

Take 1  Productions Every bride planning her outdoor wedding, hopes for beautiful blue skies and sunshine. I am sure Sabiha was no different. The weather started off nice, then  we had a few sprinkles of rain throughout their video/photo session, then the rain cleared up beautifully. With the anticipation of the outdoor ceremony to begin, the crowd and the soon to be “husband and wife” waited. The lighting and sky were perfect! Once the bride walked down the aisle and the ceremony was officially underway, it poured like “cats and dogs”. Sabiha and Julius … and all the guests … hustled to get under cover. The rain did not dampen the spirit of the the couple or their guests! In fact, it only added to the beauty of the day … and the undeniable love shared between Sabiha and Julius.  Here is how their story began……

Take 1 Productions is based in Michigan, but travel worldwide. They are award-winning film makers who capture your so-so-so- special moments with a charismatic charm that is unequaled! Their films are dramatic but pleasingly dreamy … edgy, but filled with warmth.

Thanks so much, Don & Joanne for sharing your amazing talent with us!

We’ll have more photos of Sabiha & Julius’ wedding from Arising Images in a little later today, so please do check back …

A few more bits of eye candy from today’s featured wedding…

Jessica Johnston real wedding

all images by Jessica Johnston (who we LOOOVE!)

I LOVE the simple white cakes set against such a rich, elegant background. I think that is what originally appealed to me about this wedding…the complete decadence paired with the really understated details. The bride’s gorgeous gown with the simple, chic bolero. The perfect little girl with her sweet knit hat. The birdcage veil, the cobalt blue wine glasses, the everything. I just love how unbelievably luxurious and yet irresistably approachable this whole wedding is.

Real Wedding: Liz and Ken, VI

Sometimes it’s the smallest, most intimate weddings that are the most beautiful. For most of us, having this type of an affair is virtually impossible, but there are lessons to be learned that would apply to any wedding…

Jessica Johnston real wedding

all photographs were captured by the lovely and talented Jessica Johnston

First, create an ambiance that is warm and incredibly inviting. Classic candlesticks towering over simple but beautiful white florals, classic white linens, great food and really nice wine.

Make little touches that you would if you were hosting your own dinner party at home. Things like handwritten place cards, bottles of champagne or a even sparkling water stored on ice beside each table, a welcoming toast from the bride or groom.

Chanel Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. Classic, simple and totally beautiful. From your wedding attire to your vows, everything should be thoughtfully elegant. A harpist or spanish guitarist would be lovely and would make guests feel that they are attending something incredibly special.

Make time for each guest. It means so much to those who traveled near and far to get in a quick hug with the bride and groom. By really making an effort, you will ensure that guests are left feeling thrilled.

So much more to come!

Real Wedding: Liz and Ken, V

Now on to the gorgeous dinner that Liz and Ken hosted with their closest family members. The pure romance of the evening just fills every corner, from the lush white flowers to the classic taper candles…

Today’s wedding is such a study in elegance. The bride’s chic but totally refined style is simply gorgeous and the entire affair seemed to follow suit…

The affair was held at the Ritz Carlton in Dearborn with only close family members attending. I love the warmth and intimacy of the affair, from stealing kisses in an elevator to sharing a first dance beneath those stunning chandeliers. We have so much more eye candy on the way! The images were all captured by Jessica Johnston.

If you are just now stopping by, we are gushing over Liz and Ken’s intimate wedding that the fabulously talented Jessica Johnston (and when I say talented, I literally mean that I get emails all the time from readers who rave about her). Here are a few more bits of eye candy from the simple, totally romantic ceremony…

Doesn’t this kind of remind you of a movie? It’s just so visually stunning…classic bride and groom in ridiculously beautiful attire, a perfect chandelier glistening above, a little pup and a beautiful baby. Does it get any better? So, so much more to come!

Real Wedding: Liz and Ken, II

Today we are featuring perhaps the most intimate wedding we’ve ever shown on SMP…with a grand total of 15 people, Liz and Ken tied the knot at the Ritz Carlton among those they loved the most.  And yet even though most of you can’t pull such a small affair, it’s the grace and elegance of the style that I knew you would fall in love with.

Jessica Johnston

Jessica Johnston sent us the images that I have literally devoured with glee. Her photographs are shockingly gorgeous, the perfect combination of timeless beauty and a sweet but whimsical style.

The bride wore an off the rack dress she found at Nordstrom and the stunning bolero was designed by Badgley Mischka. And, she’s lovely…so classic, so grace Kelly. The entire wedding is just effortlessly beautiful, inspiring a simple and candidly gorgeous style. Love.

Sophisticated Black Tie Wedding From Laura Davis Events

Just a bit about today’s wedding couple before we get to their ultra-chic black-tie celebration …

Andrea and Greg were originally scheduled to marry in April. However, shortly before that, they were in a serious car accident and the wedding had to be postponed. The following August, Andrea approached Tifany at Gourmet Invitations with a request for invitations and all of the other wedding-related paper pieces … from soup to nuts! She wanted the design to set the tone for the celebration that they were planning. They had decided to have a much smaller wedding, followed by a cocktail party and reception at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester, Michigan. The point of this story is that Tifany would have one week to complete a process that typically takes 9 months! But she did it … with incredible results.

Pulling together a sophisticated, black-tie event in such a short time takes the talents of an experienced, creative team of experts. Enter Laura Davis Events. Laura Davis Events is based in metropolitan Detroit. Their weddings are some of the most highly recognized Michigan events, due primarily to their reputation for exceptional service, chic style and innovative designs. So … with the combined efforts of Tifany, Laura, and Marianne Thai (event manager)  — Andrea & Greg were married!

Kate’s Advice To All Brides

Kate and Mike's Exquisite June Wedding At Pine Knob Mansion

photography by Jess + Nate Studios

We’ve totally enjoyed showing you all of the different elements of Kate and Mike’s beautiful wedding at Pine Knob Mansion in Clarkston, Michigan. There’s just something magical about the month of June, pretty peonies and lovingly created weddings! Kate had the luxury of time and patience and wonderful wedding vendors. Here’s what she has to say to all of our readers who are either just beginning, in the middle of, or almost finished with your wedding plans:

from Kate …

Having been engaged for a little over 2.5 years, I’ve learned a lot along the way and thought I’d pass some of my advice and tips along to you!

First, I must start by saying that I absolutely LOVED planning my wedding and put everything I had into it.  It never felt like a chore to me.  Sure, it got stressful at times and there were definitely less fun things to do than others, but overall, it was one of the most wonderful times in my life and I really wouldn’t change a thing.  I honestly have little to no regrets about the decisions I made along the way.  My point is – ENJOY IT!  It will be over in the blink of an eye.  Fortunately, I have lots of great memories throughout the planning process that I can reflect on to help transition me out of the wedding planning mode :)

Don’t subscribe to the whole ‘the wedding was/will be the best day of my life’ notion.  It has always annoyed me when people say this.  The wedding should be one of MANY best days of your lives.   I would have never wanted my wedding to come, if I truly believed that.  Your wedding is really the start of a whole new life together that will be filled with many great days to come.

Hire a videographer!!!!  Even if it’s not your first choice.   The very fact that someone will be able to capture your ceremony and special moments at the reception is priceless.  Trust me, the day goes by faster than you can ever imagine.  You spend months (if not years) planning your wedding, and in 8 short hours, it’s over just like that.  There were many things I didn’t see and people I didn’t talk to and I’m so glad that we will have the video to watch in the future.  I really don’t think that I have ever heard someone say that they regret hiring a videographer; however, many girls have said they wished they would have hired one after the fact.  It’s a great investment and you’ll be forever grateful!  {Kate & Mike’s Videographer: Epic Motion}

Love your vendors!  We were very fortunate to hire everyone we wanted.   I was very picky with who I chose and I wouldn’t have it any other way.  Do your research beforehand!  We were engaged for a year before we set a date and when we finally did, I knew exactly who I wanted.  I genuinely LOVED the people that we worked with – which in turn made the process so much less stressful and a lot more fun.  On our wedding day, I truly felt like I was surrounded by friends and not just photographers, videographers, a DJ, etc…   It’s so important that you ‘click’ with everyone.  They play a huge part in ensuring that your day will be the best it possibly can. {Paper pieces by Gourmet Invitations}

Don’t sweat the small stuff.  Something is going to go wrong – it always does.  The beauty of it is that 99.9% of the time, no one else will know except you.  It’s really not worth worrying about on your wedding day.  This is not to say that something should be overlooked if a vendor didn’t follow through, but deal with it AFTER the wedding.  At the end of the day, as long as the pastor shows up, you will be married to the love of your life and that’s really all that matters anyways.

I hope this will help you keep things in perspective while planning your wedding.  I can’t stress enough how important vendor selection is in the overall success of your day.  I realize that everyone’s budgets are different, but there are still great vendors in all price ranges.  The bottom line is that brides need to DO THEIR RESEARCH!  Of course, once the day arrives, you have to surrender your control and just let things take its course.  For a control freak like myself, I had no problem doing this because I really believed in and trusted my vendors.  Sure enough, they didn’t disappoint!

My Best Wishes To All

Kate

An all-star cast for a ten-star celebration!

Jessica Johnston Photography Kate Mike Michigan

One of our readers let us know that Kate had  created a web page that had lots of great information about all of her wedding vendors. Here’s what she had to say about Jessica and Nate.

from Kate … Jessica and Nate are two of my favorite people. I knew I wanted them to shoot our wedding before we had a date set or place booked! Photography was extremely important to us and I knew that with Jess and Nate, we wouldn’t have to worry about having AMAZING photos. At our initial meeting, we just clicked. I love everything about them – their philosophy, work, personalities, you name it! I was never one who wanted a ‘must shoot’ list or millions of formal photos. Some of the best pictures are ones that capture true, natural emotion and they have mastered the art of capturing those candid moments on film. In my opinion, they are some of the best in the business and are worth every penny. If you are considering booking them – DO IT!!! You will not be disappointed. After everything is said and done, your pictures are what you will have for the rest of your life to remember your wedding day.  When we saw our proofs, to say that we were blown away would be an understatement! Each and every photo is AMAZING! It’s evident how much energy, time, and passion they put into the images that they take. My husband and I are truly thrilled with our wedding photos. Once again, I cannot stress enough how much we love Jessica and Nate. They are all around fabulous photographers and people!

Jessica and Nate, Kate and Mike … thank you for sharing these amazing wedding photos with us.
