A Rustic Outdoor Wedding At the Groom’s Family Farm

Some wedding parties want a limo, but this crew? They prefer a more laid-back ride. Driven by a tractor from the ceremony to reception, they fully embraced the family farm setting and crafted a rustic celebration personal to them. Peony Events planned, Elena Wolfe photographed and the full gallery is where you’ll find every moment.

From The Bride…We wanted our wedding to be one that “went down in the record books”, as my Dad likes to say! We were so thrilled to be sharing our love story with all of our family and friends and wanted our special day to be one that was unforgettable! Having our wedding at the farm was a perfect place for us to celebrate, as it was a special part of Peder’s childhood, and captured our easy going love that we have for each other.

Deciding on the color palette was an easy decision, we wanted our guests to truly soak in the beautiful farm surroundings. By choosing the neutral, muted tones it kept that soft-warm look that complemented the backdrop beautifully. As a bride, I enjoyed every minute of pulling together the details and honestly I think Peder did too! The ceremony space was by far our favorite crafted detail. We knew we wanted a unique space for our “I do’s” because it would be the place where we would share our vows and become officially a married couple. Even though we spent many hours hauling hay bales into place, cutting up perfectly squared pieces of fabric, and rolling whiskey barrels across the property, it was more than worth it when it all came together. The hay bales were then also used to create lounge areas for both the cocktail hour and in our reception space under the tent. This made for a great spot for our guests to sit and enjoy a drink and added a fun flair to the decor.

Since we were getting married on the farm we really needed to do a lot of the work ourselves. Although at first very overwhelming, Pete and I ended up truly enjoying designing and creating a lot of the special details together. We spent many hours up in the top of his father’s barn looking for unique wagon wheels, crates, and other fun farm items that would be great personal touches to our space. Another detail that really added to the table decor, was the barn wood planks we had as runners. This idea developed after realizing how expensive farm tables were to rent, but we still wanted some kind of wood accent.Thankfully, Peder was able to distress and stain old barn wood and it was the perfect added touch to the table designs. These details really came together in such a beautiful way and ultimately made our decor uniquely our own.

Throughout the day there were so many unbelievable moments that we will never forget; riding in a vintage 1931 Chrysler and then traveling in the back of a tractor (driven by Peder’s Dad!) with our entire bridal party and parents accompanied with coolers and hay bales, but ultimately seeing each other for the first time was by far our favorite. We chose to do a first look prior to the ceremony because we wanted that intimate moment to ourselves, and we are so thankful we did! Underneath a breathtaking willow tree, Peder and I got to take in all of the excitement and joy of years of friendship and love for each other….the big day was finally here…we were finally going to be married! The tree not only made for a stunning backdrop, but was a place on the farm that was truly special to him. We couldn’t have pictured a better place to soak in that moment.

My biggest advice for brides is to really try to enjoy all the preparations leading up to it and appreciate each of the various stages of the planning process. Peder and I (along with the help of family and friends!) created a lot of our special touches together, therefore, it made it all the more special when the big day came and we saw all of our hard work come to fruition. Also, I encourage all couples to step out, at some point during the evening’s celebration, to have a moment together, just the two of you. Peder and I left the dance floor for a few minutes and we laid by the pond in the grass, me in my gown, him in his tux, and we just breathed in all of the love and joy that day gave us. We both still talk about that moment.

From Michelle Lange… As a photographer, one of our roles is to be one step ahead of everyone else. Our clients are the heartbeats of our businesses, and decisions and actions related to the function of ones business should always keep that heartbeat in mind. From the beginning of my business, I had a very detailed ‘if something ever happened’ plan. Both my parents, my husband have the detailed plan. A few of my closest photographer friends are aware that they are listed as the contacts. Never in a million years would I have thought that this plan would have had to go into effect, but the day before this inspiration shoot (planned months in advance), it did. And my businesses heart did not skip a bit. I truly believe that some higher power made me require an emergency appendectomy at a time where I had a break in the wedding season. What’s most important here, is that upon contacting what is outlined in my plan as an emergency backup photographer, Angela Newton Roy stepped up to the plate to photograph this inspiration shoot I was so excited about for months. This says a lot about ones character and the industry as a whole. The wedding industry, while competitive, it is driven by people who love love and believe in teamwork. While I hope to never have to put this emergency plan into effect again, I am comforted in knowing of what great industry I am a part of.

From Kat Eitner Events… This inspiration shoot developed from a vision of bohemian and honeycomb elements. The black antique furniture from Trunk Vintage Rentals were the perfect backdrop for the pops of coral in Karma Flowers table and bouquet design. Show stopping Marchesa and Reem Acra gowns from Elizabeth John’s, quilted table runner and unconventionally beautiful table floral design added Bohemian elements. We hope to inspire couples to incorporate eye catching elements, such as the honeycomb or pop of color, throughout their big day.

From Michelle LangeAs most brides, grooms, weddings guests and vendors know, the recent weather in the NorthEast has been less than ideal for outdoor weddings, but Amanda and Drew didn’t let any bad weather rain on their love parade. Amanda and Drew’s wedding is proof that a wedding day is beautiful regardless of rain or shine. It is also proof of the many benefits of adding DIY details to the day, from showcasing Amanda and Drew’s personalities, to sharing some of their happiest moments together, to having a fun project to bring Amanda and her bridesmaids together, or even delightfully surprising Amanda with a new-found passion for invitation design.

From the Bride, Amanda of LittleMissMrsSome brides have been planning their weddings since they were little girls. I wasn’t one of those brides, but it is safe to say that Ive been practicing for my DIY wedding since I was a little girl. Endless arts and crafts projects, using whatever I could find around the house, which developed into a passion for handmade cards, were all clear signs that I would design and conquer my DIY wedding.

First and foremost, I wanted a wedding that would capture the unique love Drew and I share. I started with the invitations. After gathering much inspiration from Style Me Pretty and other wedding blogs, I decided on a theme, colors, and little details that reflected our personalities. For example, I included the great state of New Jersey on our invitation because on the day we met, we were both on our way to NJ (from Baltimore), where we both grew up. I was planning on taking the bus but instead Drew gave me a ride!

I taught myself Adobe Illustrator and dove into designing our invitations. Our RSVP was a mad-lib postcard, which reflects our lighthearted dispositions, as well as our inner-English teachers (we are both Teach For America alumni). The mad-lib RSVPs were not only so fun to read when we got them back, but they also made for a neat decoration at the wedding, and a great keepsake. Leading up to the wedding, I went on to design and conquer the ceremony programs, place cards, table numbers, and station banners and signage. One tip for future DIY brides is to consistently use the same 2-3 color codes (HTML is you also have a wedding website), as well as fonts. I also recommend choosing one graphic detail (for me it was a heart) to include on every piece of wedding stationery. Although it was a time-consuming process, the finished products were exactly what I had envisioned.

Our flowers were DIY with a ton of help from my lovely bridesmaids. Since we had the luxury of staying at the inn all weekend, they worked on bouquets and centerpieces the day before. For brides wanting to save money with DIY (not always the case), flowers are definitely a manageable project. For the centerpieces, we wrapped mason jars with ivory lace to match my dress, which had an ivory lace overlay. One of my favorite moments of the wedding weekend was walking into the barn on the day before the wedding to see the beautiful floral arrangements my bridesmaids had completed.

The beauty of DIY is that every last detail on your wedding day can be exactly how you imagined. My shoes are a perfect example of this. I searched for months for shoes, but could not find a pair with all three of my requirements: 4 inches, blue to match the bridesmaids color scheme, and a little pizzazz. I finally settled on a pair that met requirements one and three, but not two. Then, one week before the wedding I found these amazing teal shoes at Marshalls. I told my bridesmaids that they were the perfect height, color, and comfortable (added bonus!), but they needed a little more personality. My bridesmaids found rhinestones at a craft store, which we super-glued to the heels. The finished product was my dream wedding shoe!

I won’t say my DIY elements made wedding planning any easier, but I will say the time I invested in designing and conquering my wedding was well worth it. In fact, I had so much fun designing for my own wedding that I’ve opened a wedding stationery boutique on Etsy, Little Miss Mrs. I hope future brides will find inspiration from my wedding photos, captured by the incredibly talented Michelle Lange.
