  9. cupcake says:

ADORABLE!!! quick question.. what size jar did you get from ikea??

  10. Erin says:

I just tried this, and I'm sad to say that 1 cup of rock salt is WAY to much salt- it remained liquidy and tasted way to salty. We used a regular mason jar for this- are you sure its 1 cup for each mason jar? We're going to try it again tomorrow with less salt- I love this idea and really want to do it for my shower this summer!

  11. What a great idea! Very thoughtful and unique! Guests would surely love this and remember this for years to come!

  12. Vicky says:

Thanks for all your sweet comments and thanks for the feature Abby! The jars I used were just a tad bit bigger than an actual mason jar.
Erin, if yours came out salty or liquidy make sure you completely seal your plastic bag if it is not tightly closed the salt will flavor the ice cream and it will not freeze properly.

  13. Such a wonderful idea! I can't wait to give this a try.

  14. Claire says:

Did I miss a liquid step--guests will have to add water or milk to the ice cream mixture right? How much should they add?

@Erin The salt and ice help turn the mixture into ice cream (it should surround the bag) not BE part of the ice cream, I think.

  15. Chelsey Lay says:

This is a Great idea! It's wonderful to see wedding favors that you wouldn't typically see at weddings. Thinking outside the box.

  16. Beata Biernat says:

Hi. Can someone post the recipe steps to include in the favor? I am an avid ice cream eater, not maker, so would like to include the details, mostly about what to combine, etc.

    Thanks!

  17. Jennifer says:

Wow, these are so fun and creative for a summer wedding or party! Very neat idea!

  18. Ashley says:

what size are the mason jars?

  19. Erika says:

Beata Biernat: I was thinking the same thing! Just click on the top photo above and it will take you to a photo gallery that has the tag with the printed instructions:)

  20. Lindsay says:

    they're quite lovely :)
did you design the labels yourself or did you get them off of http://www.labelsonthefly.com/ ?
i know they have a lot of pretty fun food tag designs.
i might use this jar idea for my sister's wedding coming up :P thanks a bundle for posting

  21. These are so beautiful I could just scream! Seriously beautiful, affordable, and simple. Thanks for the inspiration :)

  22. Tracy says:

@ Claire - individual cups of creamer are the liquid for the recipe. This is a great idea. My suggestion is to add a small plastic spoon as well - not everyone has spoons available at their hotel.

  23. Sarah says:

GROSS. This is disgusting and certainly NOT ice cream!

  24. Sarah says:

Also? People need to be very careful not to food poison everyone with unrefrigerated half and half.

  25. Rita says:

@Sarah The Mini Moos are shelf stable and don't need refrigeration. And your "Also?" did not need a question mark.

  26. Steph says:

So, apparently some people don't know how to make ice cream. Put the creamer, vanilla, and sugar in the bag, and seal it tight; also you should probably get as much air out as possible. The ice goes in the jar with the rock salt. Take the bag and put it in the jar with the ice and rock salt, make sure the ice covers the bag on all sides. Then shake it up...probably a lot. The temperature the ice & salt achieves is what solidifies the cream mixture. After a while (not sure how long as I've never used this method) you can stop; take out the bag (note, this is the part you eat...not the salt or ice) and there should be delicious ice cream inside!

  27. Courtney says:

If you click on the "two side labels" link, the instructions are there for you to print!

    Such a darling idea!!

  28. Tami says:

I am surprised at how rude a lot of you people are with your comments. I think it is a great idea and the ice cream you make with this recipe is very good. My kids do it in a gallon zip loc bag. Come on people, if you don't have something nice to say keep your mouth shut.

  29. KimberlyRose says:

Does anyone have an idea of how long you'd have to shake the jar? I'd love to do this with my cub scouts, depending on how much energy they'd have to expend. (Although for ice cream, they might be able to find some extra energy!) I'll do a test run before actually doing it with the boys, but it'd be good to have an idea of how long it'd take. Thanks in advance.

  30. Courtney says:

Any ideas on how to make this vegan? I've not seen individual vegan creamers.

  31. Nikita says:

    I love this!

Sarah, how is this gross or not ice cream? Ice cream is frozen cream/milk, sugar and flavouring.

  32. Josie says:

    These are cute, great idea!
It cracks me up so much that someone ate the salt!!!!

  33. JENNIFER says:

I absolutely LOOOOVE this idea & I am thinking of using it was a welcome/hotel gift to greet guests. Has anyone tried flavored creamers by chance? I wonder how something like Hazelnut would do...or freeze dried fruit (possibly in seperate bag until ready to shake rattle & roll!!) Has anyone tried experimenting yet? Thanks!!

  34. Hiskia says:

love the idea! i posted a picture & link on my blog, hope you don't mind!

  35. Kelly says:

This is a great idea and was thinking of sending it in a care package. But has anyone tried it and does it really work?

  36. You have definitely a awareness private posting style and present really facts. The content articles are good to understand and you don´t use wonderful deal of ads like every one of the other bloggers.

  37. Debbie O says:

What a GREAT idea!!! I love it! silly question where can I find vanilla sugar? and can i substitute it for french vanilla creamer?

  38. Michelle says:

Awesome idea! I love it....but part of the reason I love it is probably because of my love for mason jars :)

  39. I recommended this to one of my Texas summer brides and she scooped it up! She and all of her guest loved the idea and it was quite tasty!

  40. laura ali says:

where do you purchase the sugar and vanilla powder? what other flavors could you do?

  41. I absolutely love this idea! This is great for summertime when it's so hot outside... I could see guests loving this.

  42. Melinda says:

Just wondering if anyone knows about how much this would cost? I LOVE the idea, and would like to do them as favors at our wedding in July (HOT! :-)), but need to figure out about how much it will cost me. Any thoughts before I start doing some more research? Thanks for such a cute idea!

  43. Grace says:

I love this idea and have everything except for one thing. Where did you guys buy vanilla powder? Is there something that can substitute the powder?

  44. What size jars did you use? I have a handicapped daughter and these are great for her. I make them up and she can leave on her shelf and make them up as needed.

  45. Pat says:

I've only made ice cream in an ice cube tray. How does one make the contents into ice cream? Is there a label with instructions for the person receiving the gift? Please send directions! Thanks! I love the idea if I only knew how to use it.

  46. autumn says:

i would really like the jar size. how much ice cream does it yield? i checked "mason jars" and they come in 3 sizes- each labeled "mason jar". i suppose that is all adjustable, but if i knew how much it made, i could plan for it and change it up- maybe double it or make it chocolate with a similar recipe

  47. Rochelle Ludlow says:

I would also love to know where to get the vanilla powder?? Also were do you get the individual creamers??
Excited to try this and give out to VT families for the heat of the summer. Thanks.

  48. Bethanie says:

Courtney, maybe try coconut milk for a vegan substitute? I do not think that they package coconut milk creamers in the little cups, though. : /

  49. Jerrah says:

How many half& half packets do you include in each jar?

  50. CM says:

    @Jerrah: 8 packets per jar.

I did some research on costing for these and wanted to post what I found

Jars: The ones from IKEA [SLOM] are $4/jar for the 32oz. size--which I think is pictured. It's probably best to buy Mason Jars. Amazon has Ball & Kerr brand for up to $11-$16 & ~$20 per dozen for a pint sized and quart sized jars respectively. www.uline.com has them cheaper for about $1.20/jar for the 32oz size if you order 3+ cases.

Coffee Creamer Packets: I've seen Coffee-Mate boxes of 50 for $7.05 at Walmart. International Delight also sells boxes of theirs too (24/box) at Wal-Mart/Target and Big Lots. I haven't seen the Mini-Moo pricing though.

Vanilla Powder: I've seen REAL vanilla powder (not to be confused with vanilla sugar or vanilla coffee cream powder) at the manufacturer's websites--brands like Nielsen's Madagascar Bourbon, India Tree, & Espresso Supply. Also via an online retailer like Amazon. India Tree 5.8oz container sells for ~$16. Nielsen Madagascar Bourbon brand also sells at Whole foods I believe.

Rock Salt: Should be carried by various grocery stores.
    ------------------
Also, for those who were wondering--the process takes a couple minutes of shaking/setting for the mixture to freeze :-)
