Bohemian Portland Wedding Inspiration

What I love about this shoot isn’t quite as obvious as lovely pictures. And lovely they are, it’s really all about the colors. The textures. The feeling of happy, that seems to fill every last photograph. From the wispy gowns to the floral crowns, every last detail – designed by Lavena B. Vintage with photographs by Andie Reavely – is boho chic entirely steal-worthy. More here!

From Andie ReavelyWanderers, adventurers and vagabond: a community of like-minded folk. The idea of the bohemian is undeniably captivating. With this inspired shoot, we wanted to exhibit the whimsical diversity, yet like-mindedness of a bohemian company.

Everything, from the pom-poms, flower crowns, mismatched glassware and recycled bottles made us want to take our shoes off and breath a little bit deeper and laugh a little more freely.

This troupe of artists and creators was a dream to work with— coincidentally embodying the very concept of this shoot inspiration.

Rocky Butte Oregon Anniversary Session

Celebrating love with beautiful photographs beyond a wedding is a must in my book, and I’ll definitely be taking a cue from this sweet duo who marked their two year anniversary with the help of their friend, Faith Teasley. They chose Rocky Butte, an extinct volcanic cinder cone, as the backdrop and the results are breathtaking. Soak it all in here in the gallery.

From Faith Teasley PhotographyCassandra, who just so happens to be my best friend, adores all things European inspired. When we discovered Rocky Butte, an extinct volcanic cinder cone butte in Portland, we knew we had found something special. It’s unique castle like structure and breathtaking views provided a perfect slice of Europe in the Pacific Northwest! Cassandra and Josh are high school sweethearts and have the sweetest story. To celebrate their two-year wedding anniversary, we spent some time documenting their love through fine art film photographs.

From The Bride… Our wedding day was beautiful, romantic and meaningful because we did exactly what we dreamed of without thinking what it would mean to anyone but each other. Oregon has been in my heart since I was a small girl in the 5th grade. A research paper on Crater Lake and Portland, OR and my heart was completely taken. I grew up in Texas and though I traveled often there was something mysterious and beckoning about the northwest. After finally visiting, I knew it was magic. The waterfalls especially awakened my soul in a new way so I always dreamed of getting engaged or married beside one. Matthew proposed at Crater Lake in Oregon (which was amazingly gorgeous) in September of 2014 and we chose to get married as soon as possible. Different ideas swirled around but the only one that really stayed true to who we were was a private February Portland waterfall elopement.

We live in Oklahoma and searched out the perfect wedding location via google images and videos posted online from elopement sites around Portland. I stumbled upon Wahclella Falls and knew at once this was where I wanted to promise my life to Matthew.

We wanted the ceremony to be private, laid back and as carefree as possible which was easy with such a wonderful group of people. It made the day even more perfect that the above are some of our dearest friends. Plus, they didn’t mind hiking a mile in to the wedding spot with all the camera gear and a drone!

I had never seen the waterfall except from online photos until the day before the ceremony. It exceeded all of my wildest dreams and expectations and upon seeing it, Abby and I danced around and laughed like giddy schoolgirls. When the rest of the group hiked in we were all taken away with the beauty of the location. It is other worldly and confirming even more how perfect this location was. One of my childhood dreams was becoming a reality in less than 24 hours.

The next day, I got ready with a group of girl friends. My hair and makeup were done by the amazing Kassandra Sommerville, a Portland makeup artist and hair stylist. My dress was from BHLDN. The bouquet, flower crown and boutonniere were made by my talented friend Bailey from Forest and Field Creative. She foraged for local greenery and stopped along the Portland roads to pick flowers and branches from the side of the road. The only guidance I gave her was to make it wild…and she did. My belt was an Etsy find because all other rhinestone belts were way too pricey. We had Pips donuts and lavender chai lattes while listening to records. The day was full of peace, sunshine, laughter and joy. We took our time and snapped plenty of photos while eating the most amazing treats. Finally it was time to meet the boys at the beginning of the waterfall trail for the first look and all I could remember thinking was how badly I wanted to see my Matthew because I had missed him all day. I piled into the car with Abby and Lauren and we drove the quick 45 minute drive out of the city into the Columbia River Gorge to the Wahclella Falls trailhead.

That first look was everything I had always imagined it would be. Matthew had never looked more handsome! He was standing there with his back towards me and once I reached him and we made eye contact neither one of us could stop smiling. I was just so happy to be close to him again. If there are soul mates then he is definitely mine. We took a few photos then gathered our troop and hiked the one mile trail together on a 60 degree sunny day in Oregon. Seeing people’s reactions was probably one of the funnest parts of the day. So many high fives, well wishes, photos taken, claps and congratulations were given. People smiled as our train of people approached laughing and just so happy to be alive.

We made it to the spot we had planned to for the ceremony and all took position. Jordan guarded the spot perfectly and didn’t allow any unaware hikers to disturb the moment. The ceremony itself was about 15 minutes long with personally written vows, communion, prayer and the exchange of rings. The only part of the ceremony I wished differently was that the wedding band I picked out was to arrive a week after our wedding. We ordered it too late and there was no way the company could get it there in time. I was upset but Matthew ordered me a silver band to wear at the ceremony which would be switched after the other came in the mail. I was so sad inside that the ring I would say my vows with wouldn’t be my actual wedding band but I suppose not everything can be perfect. As we got ready to exchange rings, Matthew pulled my band out of his pocket and it was the exact one I had hoped for! It arrived early and my sweet man kept it a secret from all of us until that moment. I was just so happy in that moment! Speaking of rings, my engagement ring belonged to his great grandmother and is close to 105 years old. So amazing.

We finished the ceremony, let the other hikers join us on the trail then climbed rocks, walked across bridges, hiked into the falls and so many other things to make sure the photos were perfect. So many times I would slip off a rock and Matt would hold me up or push me to a place I could get my footing. Luckily, I was wearing wool socks and hiking boots the entire time. Best decision of the wedding, besides marrying Matthew.

We took hundreds of photos and cuddled and kissed and danced all through the trail. It really was one of the most magical days of my entire life. And it was something I had dreamed of since being a small girl. I am so lucky to have found a man who is just as adventure driven as myself. He truly is my courage and my joy. It’s an honor to be Matthew’s wife. After the photos were completed, we drove back to Portland for a small reception with local friends. It was all entirely sweet and personal and exactly what we wanted. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

Garden-Inspired Portland Ballroom Wedding

This garden-inspired ballroom wedding is seriously beautiful, with stunning live maple branches dotted throughout the ballroom, but it’s the Bride’s Big Day recap below, that has truly left a long-lasting impression on me. With a genuine smile that could not be wiped off her face, it’s clear the Bride and Groom enjoyed their Big Day, with the planning help of Bridal Bliss, and Lauren B Photo there to capture it all!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/108823147 600 338]

From Bridal BlissI have to be honest, I am so sad this wedding is over. Working with Melissa and her mom was such a joy, and they just might be some of my all time favorite clients. They have great style, but an Italian sass that continuously kept me on my toes. The day was perfect—even though we had to execute our rain plan, everything flowed beautifully and the Grotto Chapel was breathtaking.

The evening “garden party” that Melissa envisioned was brought to life and was breathtakingly beautiful. From the tablescapes, to the gorgeous linens, to the romantic lighting, to the intricate cake–it was perfection.

I also had the opportunity to be a part of planning the big musical surprise and what struck me most, was how much love was surrounding Melissa & Charlie. Everyone was genuinely excited for the wedding and for the happy couple. It was clear that the bride & groom not only make family come first, but have truly touched many, many people in their lives including myself.

From the beautiful Bride… We were delighted with how our wedding turned out and it started with our incredible venues. The Grotto in the fall is stunning; we loved the vibrant colors of the deciduous trees, and the autumn light filtering through the greenery in the upper gardens. Even though our wedding had to be moved into the chapel at the last minute, it was a beautiful change because the church is remarkable and our music was even more beautiful inside than out. Our guests raved about our cantor singing Ave Maria prior to the ceremony, but an even bigger hit was the gospel choir bursting out with “Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher” right as we had our first kiss. We can’t thank our wedding planner enough for that idea! Our delightful and spirited priest made our ceremony unforgettable. His homily was based on his gift- a painting he completed that morning of two cypress trees that rely on the other to grow. I will never forget the feeling of overwhelming love when he asked our guests to cheer for us in support of our marriage. I’ve never heard a sound so sweet in all of my life and we could literally FEEL the love of our family and friends washing over us as we stood at the altar. We couldn’t decide on a getaway car, but after I had an inspiration for a decal that said “Our Love is Electric” I knew we needed to leave in my husband’s Tesla.

A huge highlight for us was walking into our reception at The Nines’ ballroom before anyone had gone in. It took my breath away and I was speechless. We wanted the feeling of an evening garden party, and it was captured perfectly. Maple trees with soft white lights and hanging candles were the perfect complement to this theme. We couldn’t be happier with our selection of The Nines as a venue because our wedding food was perfectly delicious. From the cocktail hour to the late night bites with a perfectly orchestrated dinner in between, The Nines’ service and food did not disappoint! Add in the fact that our wedding cake was as tasty as it was beautiful, we could not believe our good fortune in working with such capable vendors.

What we will always remember about our reception though, was a surprise dance by the bride’s nieces, nephews, cousins and a former student. For months, they had been secretly rehearsing- across two states and three cities—to perform a choreographed dance to their re-written version of Happy by Pharrell Williams. I laughed and cried throughout the entire performance and to this day, this act was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me. As wonderful as this was, our reception would not have been complete without the same day edit from Moving Pictures. Our 300 guests were able to relive our wedding day with us- the highpoint for all of us was seeing Charlie’s reaction to the wedding gift I gave him. I had no idea that Charlie had cried at all on our wedding day until we watched him read the journal I had been keeping for him for the 100 days leading up to our wedding. It was a moment we will never forget.

One of our few regrets was that we didn’t have enough time to enjoy our band. Hit Machine was an absolute blast, and one of Charlie’s favorite wedding memories was playing the cowbell onstage with Bart Hafeman! Such a riot! As icing on the cake, we left our reception in a “Just Married” pedicab! What a blessing it was to be showered by rose petals as we waved goodbye to our loved ones and pedaled right through the Nines Hotel! Our driver capped off our night with a midnight tour of the beautiful downtown Portland waterfront.

Colorful Portland Oregon Rooftop Brunch Inspiration

Brunch is – without a doubt – my favorite weekend activity, so it comes as no surprise this colorful rooftop celebration is my cup of tea. Bridal Bliss crafted a day saturated with lush blooms and bright hues, complimented with beautiful bite-sized treats. Soak in every sunny moment in the gallery here!

From Bridal BlissWe selected a brunch theme as the city of Portland is is very well known for their brunches. With patrons waiting in line for hours, we decided to skip the lines and bring a delicious brunch menu and atmosphere to a new venue in town. Washington High School, set to open it’s doors Spring of 2015, has an incredible roof top deck with a stunning view of Portland.

When planning the brunch we wanted to create a clean but festive feel with vibrant spring colors. Spring is a wonderful time of year in Portland and we wanted to capture the freshness and bring it to life. From personal mini cakes to crossword puzzles, we adorned the table with fun details wedding guests would enjoy.

From A Lovely Day… As a fun team of photographers, we loved the inspiration of a colorful brunch wedding. We wanted the photos to embody the same feeling as the best brunch you’ve ever had. Joyful, bright and happy, a brunch wedding on a rooftop deck brings smiles. We loved using a macro lens to capture the tiniest of details and we even braved a ladder on a roof for some great wide-angle images that truly showcase the magnificence of the venue. We loved the bright pops of pinks, blues and patterns and had a great time documenting all the thoughtful details.

From Zest Floral… When we think of a brunch wedding, we think of unique details combined with informal ambiance. For the flowers, our inspiration was to create a fresh and chic design that featured a splash of fun color, whimsical greenery and read wedding without looking like a typical wedding tablescape. We combined fluffy garden roses, roses, spray roses and hydrangeas with lush greenery and dainty ferns to create a full runner of fresh flowers cascading down both ends of the table. To blend the outdoor elegance with the laid back charm of the brunch theme; we used a floral color palette ranging from cream to blush and pops of vibrant pink. When accentuated by the beauty-filled view from Washington High School’s rooftop deck, the entire tablescape was simply stunning.

From Pearl Catering… At Pearl Catering we love serving fresh, local, fun bite size food. We loved the idea of a brunch inspired wedding since that is what Portland is known for. We deconstructed the already popular Chicken and Waffles and made them into bit size pieces – easy to eat at your table or walking around while mingling with your guests. Pancakes always give you the feeling of being at home with your family on a Sunday morning. We made bite size pieces so guests could still have a sense of a relaxed morning with family while enjoying a classy, formal lunch. The beautiful colors of black, red, and green inside the fruit shot help tie all the colors together.

Elegant Pacific Northwest Winter Wedding

Oregon winters are magical; that goes without saying.  But take a misty winter day in Oregon and add in some fabulous florals from Punch Portland, a bundle of golden-hued details and a bride and groom who are the literal definition of stunning and it’s a winter day like you’ve never seen.  Bask in the beauty captured by Anna Jaye Photography right here in the full gallery

From Anna Jaye PhotographySarah, the Bride, loves the winter and knew she wanted a winter wedding from the get go, despite concerns from friends and family that it would be too cold and/or rainy (Oregon in winter means rain!). The day turned out lovely with a light mist falling through most of the day and a bit of fog on the horizon, which gave the photos a soft, Pacific Northwest feel.

Sarah and Matt were married in a little white chapel at the Abernethy Center in Oregon City, OR. Their reception followed in the Abernethy Ballroom a few short steps away.

Sarah’s florist incorporated succulents, brunia berries, cedar, and pinecones into the bouquets and boutonnieres to reflect the winter theme. She and her bridesmaids wore pretty fur stoles to keep warm. The centerpieces were a mix of tall branches (some with cotton) with mercury glass candles, and shorter vignettes with lush white blooms in white milk glass vases. Sarah said,”The most important thing for me was for everyone to have fun and enjoy the night which wasn’t very difficult since it was a very intimate wedding with only 65 guests. Only our family and closest friends were there so everyone knew each other very well.”

Winter’s Dawn Wedding Inspiration Shoot

Captured through the lens of Mary Alice Hall the soft, subtle tones of the bridesmaid dresses coupled with the gorgeous intricate lace of the brides gown played perfectly with the rustic ambiance of the rustic setting. With gorgeous floral arrangements designed by Blum Floral Design and a captivating video by Watertown Wedding Films, every detail of this beautiful inspiration shoot cannot be missed here!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/117943281 600 338]

From photographer Mary Alice Hall… Champagne Wedding Coordination headed the event design for the shoot, but the inspiration and design planning was a collaborate effort from Mary Alice Hall Photography along with their team of creative Portland wedding vendors.

The winter’s dawn inspiration came from our love of 19th century romantic literature and Jane Austen’s timeless novel, Pride & Prejudice. We created a romantic and whimsical mood while keeping the design modern and timeless. Our all-time favorite scene in the novel and movie is when Mr. Darcy meets Elizabeth in the woods at dawn. The sunlight gleams on their faces and it’s as if they are the only two on the earth. As soon as we decided on our theme we knew that Wind Mountain Ranch in Stevenson, Washington was the perfect location.

For the overall color palette we chose scarlet red, ivory, blush and dusty gray and – we also knew we wanted to incorporate as much luxe textile as possible with velvet, fur, wool, and feathers. Something Borrowed provided incredible vintage furniture and accessories. A scarlet red velvet settee was the perfect seat for our bridal party. A white sheepskin throw and brant burgundy afghan brought warmth and texture to our bride and groom in our fireside lounge. Lane’ at Something Borrowed provided mis-matched, gold-rimmed vintage china for our formal place settings, along with crystal champagne flutes, wine goblets and gold flatware.

The gorgeous blooms, by Blum Floral Design, she used garden roses, peonies, hydrangea, amaryllis, ranunculus and tulips to create a soft, romantic look. She added a lot of thistles, dusty miller and several varieties of eucalyptus for texture and a cool grey blue undertone. Cranberries in vases and strung on wires added more of the rich color and texture. The dining table, a gorgeous six foot farmhouse table provided by Something Borrowed. We created an elegant and unique design by using brass pillar candles, lush flowers, vintage books and our favorite cooper vessels. You can’t imagine winter without fresh cranberries, we strung them on wires for chair ties and placed in vases which added rich color and texture to our dining table.

White Pepper’s pancake wedding cake was the main highlight of our brunch buffet – The scrumptious fluffy cakes were topped with French Vanilla buttercream, fresh berries and dripping with maple syrup. We created an intimate brunch, and the delectable brunch spread sat at a classic white Lucille desk alongside our French bar cart set as a coffee bar-with colorful, vintage teacup & saucers. Freshly brewed by Chemex, Stumptown Guatemala Bella Vista coffee, not only acted as a prop but the warm coffee helped us stay warm throughout the shoot!

Our brunch theme hors d’oeuvres weren’t only appetizing but it encompassed our theme of texture and bold color! Beet Pickled Deviled Egg, Sweet Celery Hood River Bosc Pear, Prosciutto, Pistachio Brioche Toast, House Blend Almond Granola, Greek Yogurt, Strawberry and an Herb and baby greens salad with breakfast berries and a lemon vinaigrette. Our wedding party celebrated and toasted with a Classic Mimosa Argyle 2011 Vintage Brut accompanied by fresh orange juice and grapefruit.

We wanted to create a unique and dreamy seating chart. The board was made of wooden ribbon spools. Each name was pinned to the rich colored velvet ribbon. Sitting alongside was our handwritten-letter invitation, and Trista carried the calligraphy theme to the place cards at our dining table.

The English Dept. lent us three beautiful wedding gowns and gorgeous accessories. For the bride she wore Leanne Marshall’s, Danielle. An Ivory and nude lace illusion bodice gown with full silk organza skirt. Accompanied by the in-house Elizabeth sash. The Double strand of glass rhinestones on ivory silk grossgrain ribbon sash gave contrast, texture and definition.

Our lovely bridesmaids wore Claire La Faye, Bespoken in blush and pale grey. Crossover chiffon gathered bodice with Alencon lace and silk pleating, asymmetric draping and pleating detail at waistline. This wedding gown is also available in off white, ivory, blush, robin’s egg blue and nude. Our dashing groom wore a trim fit, pure wool “Heather Gray Allure” tuxedo by Jean Yves from Este’s Men’s Clothing.Portland Make-up and Hair provided the hair and makeup look for our shoot. One of the universally favored aspects of the shoot was the cap veil, our stylists transformed our bride into an updated version of Elizabeth Bennet. Her second look was fun a sophisticated and she wore Mignonne Handmade Plume D’or, brass feather motif headband to add a touch of whimsical drama. Our bridesmaids were styled with loose curls and tucked back for elegance with their feather hair clips.

The collaborative winter’s dawn inspired stylized shoot was a dream come true and we hope it inspires readers!

Urban Meets Romantic Portland Wedding

I’ve been living in Oregon for just a little over a week now, and if this wedding is any indication, I am going to really, really like it here.  The perfect mix of romantic stylings and a fabulous urban setting, it’s the kind of laid-back meets sophisticated affair that makes my heart sing.  Think lush blooms from Sammy’s meets an all-out dance party.  See it all captured by Aaron Courter in the full gallery.

From Aaron Courter… A beautiful and stylish wedding at the Leftbank Annex with urban Portland portraits in The Pearl and Rose Garden. Kait & Peter made their wedding their own, surrounded by a large bridal party, integrated with their friends from Barre3, and the evening ended with a surprise flash mob by their friends.

From The Bride… When Peter and I got engaged, I decided that I would be a chill bride. I would not fuss about the flowers, the seating chart, or having the perfect hair. Instead, I would focus on finding the joy in the process. This attitude served me well. Even though the day flew by, I was present and soaked in every moment.

My friends and family and I kicked off my wedding day at 10am with a barre3 class from my close friend and co-worker, Candace Ofcacek. She also happens to be a bit of a fitness celebrity. That class was pure magic. It both calmed my nerves and gave me a major energy boost.

Our friend David married us. He and his wife Christina wrote the ceremony, and neither of us previewed what they were going to say beforehand. Peter and I laughed and cried through the whole thing.

Dinner was delicious. Our menu was Northwest inspired and made up of locally sourced ingredients. I didn’t have many strong opinions about our wedding, but I did insist on having pudding cups from a local Portland company called Pixie RetrEAT Raw’r instead of the traditional cake. These “L’il Puddin”cups are incredibly decadent and satisfying. They’re also shockingly healthy!

The dance party that followed dinner and the toasts was next level. The highlight of the night occurred when all of my friends from barre3 rushed the dance floor and surprised me with a flash mob dance. I had no idea it was coming, and it was such a sweet surprise.

I’m so grateful to our photographer Aaron Courter for capturing our big day. He’s incredibly talented and a real dream to work with!

Nature Inspired Portland Wedding

Weddings like this one make me happy.  You know the ones – they’re laid-back, yet elegant, dripping with crafty details and sooo full of love, it puts an instant smile on your face.  This is all of the above and then some with lush blooms from The Green Dandelion, a yummy + gorgeous cake from Mandy McLeod  and a whole gallery of beautiful images from Margaret Austin Photography.  See them here.

From The Bride…We had a long engagement, mainly because I felt so overwhelmed when considering all of the elements of wedding planning! I was never the girl who dreamed of her perfect wedding day and I quickly realized that it was important to not sweat the small stuff and to focus on marrying the love of my life. I searched far and wide for my wedding dress. The only parameters I had were that I wanted to feel comfortable and confident in it and I liked the idea of having an unconventiona gown. I looked all over Portland, my hometown in England and ended up finding my dream dress in an adorable salon in Berkeley, California. Emerald City Gowns was a breath of fresh air from the standard bridal salons, the owner created a relaxing and really fun vibe without overdoing it. I felt such a relief to find the dress and was pleasantly surprised that the other elements of my outfit worked together so well.

We had initially wanted a very small and simple ceremony but we came to realize that it would be an amazing opportunity for everyone to get together. Our parents hadn’t met, mine live in England, Scott’s are in Texas and Tennessee and our closest friends live in California. Just the fact that everyone wanted to travel to Portland to support our marriage solidified the choice to throw a huge party! The Colony was the first and last venue we looked at. The Colony’s style matched our own aesthetic and also helped to generate additional inspiration. There are two beautiful apartments upstairs and a cute trailer out back that we rented for two nights, which made it possible to be able to take our time setting up and have the wedding party spend the night. The Colony’s manager Jeremy is also the owner of the in-house catering company Field Day, he and his team were so supportive and lovely to work with and all of our guests had the highest praise for the food and bar service.

Being an artist I was able to DIY a lot. I designed the invitations, made the wedding signs and hand painted cocktail glasses for the favors, it was a lot of work but absolutely worth it. I also hung a few new paintings that I was working on when I should have been wedding planning! I found some sweet little rusty paint cans that our floral designer filled with flowers which was a lovely way to enhance the artistic decor. She did an exceptional job with all of the different elements of the floral design, including of course my gorgeous bouquet! Every vendor we worked with was seriously fantastic and went above and beyond my expectations. We didn’t need a traditional wedding, we just wanted a day that represented us and we are so fortunate to have an amazing group of friends who all contributed to help make that happen. Scott’s best man is a very talented musician and wrote us a beautiful song for our first dance. An artist friend hand carved our cake topper which we will cherish forever. My maid of honor is an incredible wedding photographer and she and I both agreed that we wouldn’t have wanted anyone else to take our pictures and I still can’t get over how she managed to so flawlessly capture everything and simultaneously support me emotionally. Words can’t even express how lucky we are to have such talented and creative friends and we are so grateful for all of the help we received from our family as well. I still get emotional when I think about how special it was to have everyone we love and both sides of our family in the same room. Our wedding proved to be the most special day of our lives, the whole celebration was so dreamy and magical and we couldn’t be happier!

Hamptons Inspired Photo Shoot

This Hamptons inspired photo shoot from Luxe Event Productions is overflowing with pretty. With Adam Trujillo Photography behind the lens every detail from the sweet seaside dinner to Vibrant Flowers pink blooms shine through, and it’s pure seaside bliss. Let the tide carry you away in the full gallery here.

From Luxe Event ProductionsDreaming of a destination wedding? You can capture the look and feel of that location you desire, right in your hometown. This shoot was inspired by the laid back luxury of the East Hamptons. The location of the shoot was actually on the edge of the Columbia River in Portland, OR.

The sunny day set the perfect tone for this nautical wedding on the water. The bride and groom lounged in soft beach grass and were playfully posing on the boats in the marina. The soft, pastel palette contrasted perfectly with the sparking water. Elements such as beach wood, glass and seashells were scattered among floral pieces that were heavy in greenery and succulents with a few pops of pink flowers.

A sparkly and simple cake adorned with anchors matching those on the beach was placed on a neutral linen. The bright, light feeling mimicked that of the Hamptons. The bride and groom were both laid back, him in a simple white shirt and slacks – her with a removable vest with a large collar that caught the summer breeze. It was easy for them to sit back and be carefree while listening to the soft lapping of the water and sticking their toes in the clean, white sand.

Bring your guests to a surprising destination when you use inspiration from your favorite get away spot. Any local can be created with the right tools. We took inspiration from nature including those items that you would actually found on the beach and by using an accenting color palette that you could find at your destination. Straw table mats and burlap floral wraps kept the day pure and raw like the simple beauty of the East Hamptons. Skip the traditional wedding apparel and choose something that makes you feel carefree and light hearted. Your guests will find the energy infectious and will be carried away to the destination of your dreams!

Contemporary Portland Ballroom Wedding

Take a step back and you’ll see this wedding is much more than your typical ballroom affair. In fact, it’s a springtime garden wedding brought indoors with crisp, clean design sensibilities woven in along the way. Christina Fuller of Bridal Bliss planned the day to perfection and Christy Cassano-Meyer caught it all behind the lens. Ready for more? It’s all waiting right here.

From The Bride…We decided to have an April wedding in Portland, despite the fear of a potential, classic Portland downpour, and therefore chose to do an indoor wedding. We are both from large families with a substantial group of college friends and work colleagues, and knew we could have a lot of guests. So the Governor Ballroom in The Sentinel Hotel in downtown Portland was the perfect space to accommodate a large party, while being a blank slate where we could decorate and make it our own. Initially we thought we were the “outdoor, wine country wedding” couple, but found that our wedding really epitomized “Us.”

We both graduated from the University of Portland, so when looking for a church for our ceremony, we thought the University of Portland chapel would be perfect. Small, intimate and with a much deeper meaning for us than any other church in Portland.

From the beginning, I knew I wanted to hire a planner/coordinator. As much as I love to plan and be organized, I knew I wouldn’t manage my stress very well since I was also in the process of opening up my own business! So we hired Christina from Bridal Bliss and it was the best money spent! She made the entire process so stress-free and FUN! We just wanted a party where people would be well fed, with good music and flowing drinks.

Pete is incredibly easy going, while I have some OCD tendencies that can creep into my laid back nature, so planning together was the perfect mix of quick decisions while paying attention to the aspects that really mattered to us. For me, I really wanted to focus my attention on the flowers and overall look that would be organic and relaxed. We worked with Hailey Bernstein from Zest Floral and Event Design and she (and Caitlin) were absolutely superb! Plus, Spring is the perfect time for all blooms! I chose florals such as roses, garden roses, freesia, cherry blossoms, anemones, ranunculus, with touches of eucalyptus, succulents and greenery. Pete and I strived for a romantic garden wedding, and wanted to bring the outside in as much as possible without it looking disjointed being inside a grandiose ballroom. We ditched the majority of the traditional round tables for long, exposed mahogany tables with matching chairs, with blush and white linens. I also really wanted a large, lush, hanging floral arrangement for the escort card table, which they successfully executed, and it was SO beautiful.

My dress was very simple with clean lines and also extremely comfortable. Originally I thought I wanted a dress with sleeves or lace, but without really any fore-thought, I ended up finding a gorgeous, lace overlay jacket to wear that made the dress like two dresses. I wore a mid length veil trimmed in silk with the lace jacket for the ceremony, but for the reception I decided to have an outfit change; with a crystal belt instead of the jacket, and a floral crown, which was oh so divine. And a little more laid back for the party.

I did not want the responsibility of choosing one single dress for all of my bridesmaids, and there were 9 of them (!), so I decided to let the girls pick any dress they wanted in the nude, blush pink family. And it turned out so beautifully! I was so pleased to see the dresses come together and I was even more happy to see all of my bridesmaids comfortable and looking like themselves! For the boys, we really struggled with finding the best option and it was important to Pete — to rent, or buy, etc — but I came upon a company called The Black Tux, where you can rent really fabulous designer-like suits and tuxes for any occasion. I showed Pete and he was on board in an instant. You can curate your entire look for the groom and groomsmen (again, there were 8 of them) and it’s shipped to your door 2 or 3 days prior to your event, and you ship back the next business day. Such a great company. Pete wore a navy blue bow tie to distinguish himself since all the men wore modern, midnight navy blue tuxes, with suspenders and black bow ties. So dapper if I do say so myself.

Christy Cassano Meyer was our photographer and she was perfection! She shot with her husband Kyle since it was a pretty large wedding/group, and it couldn’t have been more fun and easy. Both were so professional, but never in our faces and she really captured the essence of the day.

Our invitations and Save the Dates from New and Blue were all letterpressed; also white, with hints of blush. We wanted our entire aesthetic to be clean, simple, elegant and timeless. I also began to have an aversion to anything bright or too colorful, so we stayed in the blush and cream zone for everything.

My sister Madeline Guzzo (of Clarus Ink) is starting her own hand lettering business and so I asked her to do all the signage and hand printing for the wedding – from the escort cards, to the menu and dessert table signs, she did everything. Major DIY and she knocked it out of the park.

Jakes Catering did all of the food, and we chose a classic NW meal of salmon and beef tenderloin. We also had signature His and Her cocktails during the cocktail hour — his whiskey, hers vodka. Naturally.

We chose to have a small, personal wedding cake since Pete isn’t much of a cake eater. My best friend’s mother is the best baker EVER (seriously) and she made us the most delectable dark chocolate cake with italian, coconut, buttercream meringue icing (!!). Guests were treated to an assortment of mini pies from The Pie Spot — chocolate hazelnut, lemon vanilla, triple berry, marionberry and s’more pie. And since I am somewhat of a coca-cola addict, we also offered Coke Floats, which was probably my favorite little touch.

Lastly, we loved the idea of a photobooth, and guests could take home their photo strip as their wedding favor, and it was such a blast! Our guests really got into it, and looking through the photos later was a total crack up.

We were surrounded by so much love and support and although the day went by much too quickly, I can honestly say we had the most amazing time that we will never forget. From the balloon church exit, and dancing the night away, to the stolen minutes we had for just the two of us, it was pure magic.

Spontaneous DIY Oregon Wedding at Wahkeena Falls

Sometimes you just have to do what feels right, and for this couple, that was forgoing their plans for a big wedding and doing something a little more spontaneous and a little more them. This Bride’s story is worth the read, and will make Carl Zoch‘s images of this gorgeous day, seem even more special (if you can believe it). See even more here.

From The Bride…My newly husband, Freddie and I have been together now for a little over 10 years. We got engaged on my 28th birthday, and within 3 weeks we started to plan because we were so excited. At first, we planned for July 12th, 2014 in San Diego, CA because that’s where we’re both originally from (right now we’re currently living in Long Beach, CA–Freddie working as an Industrial Designer and Justine as a NICU RN). Also, a lot of our family and friends are in Southern California. I’ve never been the type to dream of my wedding day until I actually got engaged, so I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted it. The next month in Nov, I started my wedding dress search with Pinterest and put in the search “flowy wedding dress” and came upon Leanne Marshall’s Julie dress and absolutely loved it! It was exactly what I wanted, simple, beautiful and timeless. So, I research stores that carried her dresses and found Lovely Bride in Los Angeles. I highly recommend this place for future brides! This place is not your typical bridal store. It has a modern twist, the place is gorgeous, and the customer service feels like you’re their friends. I tried on maybe about 5 potential dresses. Leanne Marshall’s Julie dress was the first dress I tried on and I loved it so much, but I left empty handed because I told myself there’s no way that I could have looked online and found the dress…then it was the first dress I tried on and then I’m going to buy it. No way it could be that easy! I tried one more store and it was a disaster, came back to lovely bride and bought the dress a week after. Next, after checking out a few venues in San Diego we booked ourselves for Nov 23, 2014 (because it was the only date available for the only venue we wanted) with a 200 person guest list.

As January approached, we became overwhelmed with the estimated costs of everything and what started out exciting turned into major stress. In the beginning process of our planning I was going through some wedding blogs. I love looking at real weddings and I came upon one that stood out to me. It was an elopement in the Columbia River Gorge photographed by Carl Zoch and we fell inlove with the idea! We had just went on a trip almost a year ago to Oregon and loved the Columbia River Gorge, and Oregon is only a 2.5 hr flight from southern Cali which was great because it meant that our parents could still make the travel. Freddie’s father uses an electric wheel chair and received dialysis treatment and my mom had some health issues so we were concerned about them not being able to make it. So, even after putting down quite a big deposit on a venue with an ocean view in La Jolla, Ca we made the decision together that this would be way more fun, more “us”, and less expensive then our original plans. We wanted our immediate family to be there, so we talked to both our parents about the idea and they all supported us. I remember being so nervous to tell my mom because my mom is a traditional and hoped we’d get married in church, but when I showed her the pictures by Carl Zoch of the elopement by a waterfall, she smiled with wide eyes and said “that is beautiful.” With our parents’ blessings we were thrilled to start planning. First, we had to tell everyone our change of plans and we both have a huge family. We met some resistance, which bothered me at first, but then I realized that our wedding day really is our special day and even though we want our loved ones to be there, it’s for us. Our immediate family, all of our wedding party, and some cousins, uncles, aunts, and closest friends were on board! We contacted Carl to see if he was available for our date (which is our 10 year dating anniversary) and he was…so we booked him in early Feb. He is awesome! So laid back, fun to talk to, and helpful.

I planned our entire wedding by myself with all my research and inspiration coming from Instagram, wedding blogs, and Pinterest. I researched a waterfall that was a short distance from the road/parking lot to accommodate Freddie’s dad and my mom due to their health. Carl also helped with suggestions because he knows the area pretty well. We decided on Wahkeena Falls, which means “most beautiful”. This waterfall is gorgeous and it is just literally right off the road/parking lot. We have never been there before, but the pictures of it looked amazing. Then we booked the The Cleaners at the Ace hotel Portland. We stayed there a year before and loved the style. I saw pictures and liked The Cleaners because it was a blank canvas, you could design it anyway you want and it was perfect for our intimate dinner with dancing. Our guest list of 200 turned into a guest list of 57 (including ourselves). Then, our official guest list turned into 54 in April. In early April Freddie’s dad was able to get a kidney transplant. It was successful, but this meant he couldn’t travel for 6 months after the surgery, and Freddie’s mom wouldn’t be able to leave him alone because of that. So, after their travel arrangements had already been made, they had to cancel them. At this point, we started to question if we should even go through with it since out of all people we wanted our parents to be there. Then, life hit us with an even more unexpected event. My mom passed away on April 23rd from a head injury. Losing someone you love is already devastating, losing your mother unexpectedly on top of your wedding being nearly 2.5 months away was the absolute worse. I even got the call that my wedding dress was ready to be picked up on the day that my mom died in the hospital. After my mom passed we didn’t want to go through with it at all. We wanted to postpone it because to plan something that was suppose to be happy was a struggle when all I felt was empty because my mom was no longer with us. Everyone’s travel arrangements were made, main things already booked with deposits in so what were we to do? After taking some time off work to recuperate, and after Freddie and I had many deep talks about what we should do, we agreed that “life is too short to wait for what we want and we don’t know what could happen next” and with that in our minds we knew we wanted to continue with our wedding adventure despite all bad things that have happened.

We did a lot of DIY projects not only due to our budget, but we love creativity. This was our favorite part of the whole planning process. It was so fun to be creative together as a couple with both our ideas collaborated. We were inspired by Rifle Paper Co.’s custom wedding invitations, but they weren’t accepting any more custom orders and we actually couldn’t afford it so we made them on our own! We designed them on the computer our selves, bought paper and envelopes from paper source and printed them at home on our canon printer. Since all our guests were all traveling to Oregon we included a booklet that Freddie bound by sowing it together which included places to go, our wedding party, map and directions for the ceremony and reception. Our invitations included name stickers we had everyone wear to help them all mingle during the dinner rehearsal. Our dinner rehearsal was a cute backyard celebration at my Uncle’s house in Hillsboro. This was my Uncle and Auntie’s wedding gift to us.

As I mentioned earlier, all my research was mainly from wedding blogs, Instagram, and Pinterest. I found somethingborrowedpdx through Instagram and we rented from them for all my rentals which included: candle holders, a lamp, wooden coins for our mini wedding pies, and chalkboards. We love simplicity and even in our own home and daily life we own and purchase things based on its form but also function. So everything that we rented was pretty minimal and had a purpose. We rented our string market lighting that we hung for the reception from Barclay Rentals.

I found my florist, Anna Mara flowers from Instagram as well. Loved her work! My favorite flower is king protea so that was my main request, other than that I really don’t know flowers, so we just asked her if she could use inspiration for our flowers from our invitation and she did an amazing job! For the reception I wanted our flowers to be simple, elegant but beautiful. All our guests were flying from out of town, so I thought centerpieces would be a waste because it’d be difficult for them to fly with them, so I decided on a floral table runner. I wanted to incorporate my mom’s favorite flowers so I asked Anna if she cold include jasmine and orchids and she did. We wanted our theme to still incorporate nature since we had our ceremony at Wahkeena Falls. We asked Anna to also include staghorn floral arrangements to hang on one of the walls. Keeping with the nature theme, Freddie and I love geodes. As children, both of us always wished we got to collect them. 2 weeks before our wedding on of my bridesmaids, Roseanne (also Freddie’s cousin) told me to check out a gem fair in San Diego, and I found all the geode slices I needed and made them into personalized magnets, which we used as place cards for all our guests. I used a gold paint pen to write each of our guests’ names on them. This was one of our party favors.

We love pie, and I noticed at the weddings I’ve been to that a lot of the cake went to waste. People took a few bites and tossed it. I didn’t want that. So, we decided on bite size pies for everyone and one whole pie for our pie toppers to stand on. We ordered from Pacific Pie Co. We never been there before and didn’t have a tasting since it was a destination wedding, we just went for it! We had chocolate hazelnut bourbon pie….delicious! And half of the mini bite size pies were strawberry rhubarb. Two people in our wedding party (my sister and our friend) had birthdays that week of our wedding so we ordered them their own mini pies as well and sang happy birthday at our reception. I found our pie toppers from etsy, and loved the style goosegreaseshop because they keep the natural look of wood, but also completely personalize the toppers. Our pie toppers were spot on down to the details of Freddie’s tie and both our cats (Jayjay and Leeloo).

My family, friends, and I love to dance. So, we did something different for the traditional garter and bouquet toss. We changed it to a dance off for them! It was awesome! It was the start of everyone to boogie on the dance floor.

For our guestbook, we wanted something more fun than just people signing their names and writing congratulations over and over again. So, we got a bunch of instax mini 8 polaroid film, and we had everyone just take pictures. They’re so fun to look at!

Another one of our party favors was donuts from Blue Star Donuts! When we came a year ago before our wedding we fell inlove with their donuts, and wanted everyone to be able to taste them as well. We personalized them by placing our own personalized stickers on the snack brown paper bags saying “You donut know how much we love you.”

Since we were on a budget especially after having to take some time off work after my mom passed we decided that we had to give up the idea of a dj and videographer. My good friends, Ana and Jojo heard, and they offered to film our wedding for us as a wedding gift. We were so grateful! And their wedding video turned out so awesome and it was their first time ever making a wedding video before. They incorporated our wedding invitation that we made ourselves and they turned it into an animation. They really captured the wedding so well! Here’s the link: http://vimeo.com/102645508

For our reception, because of costs we were just going to have all our guests add to a playlist on spotify (which they did), but 1 week before the wedding. Freddie’s best men, Borge and Derek, who dj, offered to dj for the reception instead of using our playlist. So, all the songs our guests added to our playlist for the reception ended up being their way of putting in their requests. Everyone danced!

The morning of the wedding, the bridal party (9 of us -1 maid of honor and 7 bridesmaids) got ready with champagne at Ebel Artistry Studio with Claudine and her assistant (found through instagram). Their studio was so cute, they let us play our own music, and there was even a rooftop where we went to check out the view of Portland and take pictures and danced up there.

Along with my dress, I wore dolce vita wedges and my hair piece with Swavorski crystals was from Twigs and Honey. My something borrowed was from my friend, Ana who lend me her Swavorski crystal earrings that matched my hair piece. My something old was my mother’s ring, which I wore on my right hand. My something blue was my garter that was white lace with a few blue beads on it that I got from etsy. And my something new was my dress. My gifts to my bridesmaids were getting ready white floral robes from etsy, personalized wooden hangers, and a Dakota bracelet from Thread and Stone which they all wore on the wedding. My bridesmaids wore dresses from Free People, which was originally priced over $100, but I found online for $49! They wore ivory lace dresses. A lot of people were so resistant to the thought of my bridal party wearing ivory as well, but I didn’t mind. I think it looks beautiful and elegant. My maid of honor wore a Free People dress as well, but it was different than the bridesmaid dresses. I let them wear their hair any way they wanted and wear any shoes they wanted as long as they were a tan/cognac color. All the boys (including my dad) got ready in the house we rented through vrbo in the Alberta Arts District. Freddie wore a navy blue J Crew suit and tie, Steve Maden brown shoes, The boys wore navy blue suits as well, but all different brands. He just had them match the color, white shirts, grey ties, with brown shoes. His gift to them were personalized leather sleeves with their names for a flask, j crew socks (all different and fun), cigars, a leather wallet that Freddie made himself, and Kent combs.

As the wedding party got ready. One of my friends, Tasha who offered to help coordinate the decorating for the reception and guide everyone at the ceremony, so some of my cousins, friends, and even Freddie (the groom) went to decorate at The Cleaners.

Our plan was to start the ceremony at 1pm. I rode with my best friend since I was 11 years old/maid of honor and her boyfriend who I’ve been friends with since I was 13 years old. I don’t know what it was, but even with never seeing where the ceremony and reception was going to be at (besides pictures online) I was so calm. I can honestly say I wasn’t worried about anything, and felt that everything was just going to work out. I didn’t want to “ugly cry” too especially with the thought of my mom and Freddie’s parents not being there. I actually cried pretty bad during the rehearsal when my dad and I practiced walking down the aisle.

When we got to the parking lot of Wahkeena Falls, that was the first time we had all been there. It was the first time we met our photographer, Carl Zoch. I walked down the aisle of white roses with my dad to the processional song of the acoustic version of Lover’s Carvings by Bibio, which Freddie’s talented musician cousin played with guitar. You could hear the sound of the waterfall. It was magical. All I could feel in that moment was complete calm and happiness. There I was walking down the aisle with my closest family and friends watching (with no seating…they were all such good sports and were all standing since this ceremony was more elopement style. It wasn’t a place we booked, we just went there for the first time and got married there). Our wedding officiant was, Matt. He is a best friend to both of us. Freddie has known him since middle school and I’ve known him since high school. It felt really special to have someone who truly knows us well and our relationship to marry us. Everything he said was personable and funny, exactly what we wanted ☺ We exchanged our own vows that we wrote ourselves along with our Tacori rings. The ceremony was probably no longer than 15 minutes.

After the ceremony was over we walked down the aisle with white rose petals thrown in the air. We took pictures at the end of the waterfall, and then we all changed into more comfortable shoes to takes more pictures by the waterfall up close. Yes, I hiked in my wedding dress, but in my Brooks running shoes! I’m surprised that actually almost all of our guests hiked up to the waterfall as well being in their nice clothes. It was awesome! We took pictures close up to Wahkeena Falls. Its translated meaning is “most beautiful” and after visiting it in person I have to completely agree. It is simply magical! So gorgeous. Then, Freddie and I and our photographer, Carl Zoch went on an adventure of our own to take more wedding pictures. We hiked to horsetail falls. This was awesome. We never been there before either. At this hike you can actually go behind the waterfall. It was an amazing site. It wasn’t easy hiking in the dress but it was fun and so worth it! I sweated a lot and Carl was so awesome to lend me his jacket to wipe my sweat off before taking pictures. My dress got muddy at the bottom, but my maid of honor was great and washed it in the kitchen sink when we met back up with them at the rental house, then dried it with a hair blow dryer, and my dress was good as new!

The reception at the cleaners started at 6pm. Open bar was from 6 to 9pm. We had appetizer boards of Popcorn with pimentón, almonds, olives, Artisan cheese, seasonal fruit, crackers , European-style charcuterie, pickled vegetables, and mustard. Dinner was served family style. First course: Clyde Common simple greens salad. Second course: Fideo style pasta, bacon, peas, cream. And third course: 2 entrees of Dry rubbed grilled steak, jus, herb butter and grilled market salmon, spicy remoulade. We even had Stumptown coffee served, so good! It paired great with our Blue star donut party favors! Everything went smoothly. Having a smaller guest count made everything more intimate. I can remember everyone who went, I had a moment with each of them, and I didn’t feel rushed or busy like all the other brides I knew who warned me that the wedding day would be hard to enjoy because you’re busy greeting everyone. I enjoyed it all! The day did go by fast, but that’s what happens when you’re having the time of your life.

For our first dance, we did a surprise choreographed dance to Michael Jackson’s Love Never Felt So Good. In the beginning of the dance it was just Freddie and I who danced, then our entire wedding party (best men, groomsmen, maid of honor, and bridesmaids) joined us for a “wedding party” dance, and it ended with them encircling us while we were back to dancing by ourselves again. Our wedding party was so much fun! The dance was choreographed by Freddie’s two cousins, Rosie and Jonjon. Some of us learned this dance 2 weeks before the wedding, some learned it the night before.

My father daughter dance was to Prince’s The Most Beautiful Girl in The World. My dad is my like my best friend. He is the best person I know in this world. He has been through so much, and any one who meets him always says how much they love my dad too. He’s one of those people that you meet and you can just feel that he’s a great person. This moment was extra special for me because with my mother being gone, it made me appreciate even more that my dad was alive and there with us on our special day. Freddie danced with his Auntie Rose (his mom’s sister) since his mom couldn’t go. They danced to Freddie’s song with his parents “I just called to say I love you” by Stevie Wonder. This song is the song his parents would always play for him as a baby to help him fall asleep.

My Uncle Efren (my dad’s brother) sang us one song at our reception. He loves to sing and is an Elvis impersonator. He wanted to sing 4 songs. I had to limit it to 1 haha. It was a great performance!

It’s really hard to pick a favorite part of our wedding day because all of it was so great. I want to relive this day, and it’s so awesome to know how much our guests had fun too. My favorite moments were exchanging our vows with each other, hiking just the two of us with our photographer, the dance offs, our first dance and wedding party dance, and dancing with my dad.

My advice for future brides is don’t let anything stop you if it’s what you want. If we decided to postpone the wedding we might have not gotten to have the adventure that we had. Even if it seems like the end of the world with whatever you’re going through, you can get through it together not just with your husband, but with the help of your family and friends. Freddie’s parents threw us a second reception in San Diego for everyone who couldn’t make it out to Oregon, so it all works out.

Plan your wedding exactly how you and your soon to be husband want it to be. Don’t try to please anyone. A lot of times, your family and friends might try to make the wedding about themselves—giving advice about how they would want things, but it’s your special day and you want to enjoy it and remember it as something you don’t regret. A lot of weddings I’ve been to were so generic…just doing things and including things in their wedding because they think that it’s what you “have to do.” It’s not like you follow what people say when they tell you how to live your life, so why should it be any different for your wedding day? We look back at our wedding day and just want to relive every moment of it. Half jokingly, I’ve even asked Freddie if we can renew our vows next year ;)

DIY! You save so much money and it makes it much more special because you’ve done it yourself. Our invitations were such a big hit and it feels great because we did it all ourselves!

Don’t be afraid to be different, and just don’t mind what other people think altogether! So many people thought our idea of getting married at a waterfall we never been to was crazy. We did a lot of non-traditional things (no seating at the ceremony, bridal party wearing ivory, dance offs for the garter and bouquet, wedding pie instead of cake, hiking for wedding pictures), but almost all of my guests told me that it was the best and most fun wedding that they have ever been to. It also allowed my guests to take a trip and enjoy Oregon. We all spent time with each other exploring Portland the day before and after the wedding. The morning after we all had brunch together.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help or take the help that is offered to you. Your family and friends are there for you and want to help. Our wedding day was so special because everyone was involved. Our processional song played by Freddie’s cousin. Our wedding officiant was our best friend. The best men were the djs. Our friends Ana and Jojo did our wedding video. My uncle and auntie hosted the dinner rehearsal. Our friend Tasha coordinated things for the day of the wedding. My cousins all helped with the decorations for the reception. Everyone helped us, and it helped us really enjoy our wedding day.

Don’t stress out. Focus on what really matters, and that is that you get to marry your best friend/adventure partner! Enjoy!

Romantic Outdoor Portland Wedding

This is the kind of the wedding that makes my heart do leaps. Because not only is it beyond lovely, but it’s also jam-packed with sweet, sentimental details that have me smiling ear to ear this morning. From the stunning Cathedral Park ceremony setting to the last piece of delicious pie consumed from the Baker And Spice pie bar, every moment captured by Brittany Lauren will warm your heart and then some, and you can see them all here.

From Brittany Lauren PhotographyAshley and Chris were married at Cathedral Park in Portland, Oregon on a very sunny and warm August day. Ashley wore a gorgeous vintage inspired gown with a full cathedral veil while Chris kept it classic in a black fitted tux. Chris’s family moved here from Scotland so of course there were kilts and bagpipes also in attendance. They said their vows under the arches of the St. John’s Bridge and then danced the night away surrounded by vines and lavender bushes at a family friends private residence. Their color scheme consisted of creams, whites, and green with touches of lavender at each table setting. They served their guests pies instead of cake because really, everyone loves pie!

Whimsical Vow Renewal In Portland

This vow renewal had us swooning immediately. Every shot is brimming with pretty-as-can-be details like vintage candle sticks, flowers from Commonwealth and, oh yeah, the breathtaking natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.  Not to say any of this is shocking. The wife, Lindsay’s, blog Ladybird And Fellow is chock full of cuteness as well.  Check out all Karen Obrist’s photos from the day here!

From Karen Obrist PhotographyI photographed this intimate vow renewal last September and it was beautifully styled and full of details! Tall candlesticks, old books and fresh flowers lined the tables.

Lindsay and Jeremiah have two adorable little ones and a DIY blog of their own in Portland. They were celebrating 10 years together by renewing their vows in the comfort of their home. Close friends and family joined to celebrate and support this incredible couple. It was truly magical to be part of!

Classic Country Club Wedding

The Waverley Country Club just might be my new favorite venue.  It’s the perfect mix of classic and stunning, with dashes of downright elegance thrown it at every corner.  In other words?  It’s pure wedding heaven.  And when you add in a duo as charming as these two sweeties, lush blooms from Rosemary Stafford Floral Design and a gallery full of pretty from Marina Koslow, well… awesome.

From the Bride… After meeting in middle school at the age of 12, we ran into each other shortly after graduating college and returning back to Portland. It was a warm summer night and after several asks, I gave Alex my number to call me for a date. One fantastic dinner date and nearly four years later we flash forward to our engagement. We had just bought a mid-century modern style home together that perfectly reflected our collective personalities and life was good. Things got even better when Alex popped the question in November of 2012! Shortly after our engagement, we were both given job opportunities in San Francisco and decided to pack up and head South. With this big change in mind, we chose a wedding date of May 31, 2014 to give us time to settle in to SF and plan from afar. We chose the Waverley Country Club after viewing quite a few other venues around Portland. Many of them were a similar type of venue, but none of them offered the charm and elegance of Waverley. After one walk through, we decided it was the place for us and started dreaming up our special day. Luckily for us, many of the colors that are existing in the decor and even the landscaping were aligned with our color palette for the wedding. To be honest, with our hectic schedules and not seeing the venue more than a couple of times while living in SF, we heavily relied on the wedding decor we brought in just enhancing the gorgeous style that Waverely already exuded. We brightened things up with white and ivory, but loved the existing moss, peachy coral and gold scheme that was already there for us to play with. One of the most important pieces that we did create and bring in for the wedding was the chuppah. My dad made it by hand from sourced birch and my mom chose the lace. We felt that this was a very special way for us to incorporate my parents in the Jewish aspect of our wedding that they wouldn’t have otherwise been involved. The day was absolutely perfect and reinforced all of the love ans support that we’ve been feeling from our family and friends over the last five years.

Ethereal Inspiration Shoot At Lan Su Garden

Everything I see from Portland has this ethereal vibe to it, and this shoot at the Lan Su Chinese Garden is certainly locked in rhythm. Every element is breathtaking from the braided updo by Cassandra Kennedy Beauty, to the crisp flowers from The Green Dandelion. Food in Bloom even provided a recipe for the a cool Cucumber Saketinis below. So whip one up, and see all Corinne Krogh Photography‘s pictures here.

From Corinne Krogh Photography  The beautiful setting of the Lan Su Chinese Garden in downtown Portland, was the inspiration for this bridal shoot. Instead of focusing on the cultural elements of the garden (which are all fantastic, educational, and beautiful), we decided to show how a specialized venue could be used for something other than it’s main focus. The garden did not disappoint! Here in the rainy Pacific Northwest it’s important to choose a venue with a back up plan for bad weather, and with a large percentage of the garden being covered it was an easy choice. The dark rock, layers of texture, water features, and the hand laid mosaic pebble floor all made for amazing backdrops around the property. Since the artisans that created the garden put such care and attention into the details, we really didn’t have to add anything to make it beautiful. Lea, who will be getting married later this year, wore two dresses as inspiration. She chose a the beautiful Ortensia gown from BHLDN with an intricately designed back and flowing skirt. The other dress was a stunner from a local designer, Holly Stalder, who is well known for her gorgeous gowns. Our hair and makeup artist, Cassandra Kennedy, created a loose updo that could be changed quickly to include two looks for the different gowns, and we went with a more dramatic look with the makeup to match the tones of the garden. To tie it all together we brought in stunning florals by The Green Dandelion who played off the neutral tones and added a few pops of color in a unique arrangement. For a signature drink, Food in Bloom shared the recipe for a delicious Cucumber Sakini, a popular drink at the venue for summer weddings. Everything came together beautifully, a perfect evening of celebration in an oasis, tucked away in the middle of the bustling city.

Cucumber Saketinis

Makes 2 drinks

Generous 1 cucumber, peeled, seeded and chopped fine
8 ounces dry sake
2 teaspoons sugar
2 juicy lime wedges
2 paper thin slices cucumber, unpeeled, for garnish

Fill two martini glasses with ice and water to quickly chill. Add the cucumber to a cocktail shaker and muddle, as if making a mojito. Add sake and sugar; squeeze in the juice of the two lime wedges. Fill shaker with ice and shake vigorously. If you’re not in a rush, let it sit for 1 to 2 minutes. Discard the ice water in your martini glasses. Shake again and strain saketini mixture into glasses. Float a cucumber slice in each drink and enjoy.

Whimsical Farm Wedding in Portland

This wedding has ethereal down pat. It’s an easy task when the bride’s this beautiful. And with the help of the lovely folks at Postelwait’s Farm, these country nuptials came together as pretty as can be. I simply can’t get enough of the abundant blooms from Espe Floral and Foliage, the bride’s flowing veil from Rosewood Bridal, and cupcakes from Lambs Thriftway. Christa Taylor was there to capture the day.

Whimsical

From Christa Taylor PhotographyWhen I first met Cassandra and Eric, Eric had just moved from Montana and was putting down his roots in Portland. It was a new chapter and a new beginning. At first, his employment was just a stable respectable job, clock in, clock out, and pay the bills.

All that changed when he met Cassandra. Whether it was her ethereal beauty or her sweet kindness and charming reserve — Eric was won immediately. They are such a contrast, each a perfect counter-balance for the other. Her softness balanced by his decisiveness, her gentle love tempering his fearlessness. While opposites in some respects, they are one and the same heart. And that, my friends, makes a beautiful marriage.

Their wedding day dawned on a beautiful June Saturday, complete with a gentle breeze wafting through the fields surrounding Postlewait Farms. In classic Portland style, their community of family and friends all joined in for the set-up, bringing in their rustic arch festooned with incredible florals, hanging the pipe and drape and twinkle lights, setting the tables. It was a worker bee paradise.

Finally everything was ready, and as Cassandra stepped into her gown, we prepared the blindfolds. Yes, instead of a traditional “first look” Cassandra and Eric wanted to reserve that for the aisle and opted instead for a moment to connect…blindfolded.
They whispered sweet nothings in each others ears, laughing and releasing all the jitters that had traffic jammed into each other.
With one final clasp of the hands they parted till the ceremony.

Cassandra’s creativity and taste were evident in every aspect of this wedding. She had planned this soirée to a T. The tables were elegantly festooned by the talented Espe Floral and Foliage, complete with the rugged wood rounds which have become one of Portland’s evergreen trademarks. She elevated the classic mason jar with wrapped twine, ribbon and personalized detail in blush and sage green. Her gift to Eric was a custom designed set of cuff links, a long standing inside joke between them. The ceremony featured that gorgeous arch, and a pinecone strewn aisle.

As Eric and Cassandra reviewed their vows, the guests settled into their seats, and watched with delight as the couple finally became man and wife. During cocktail hour, we stole the bride and groom away for some woodland portraits, eventually joining the guests and the photo-booth for some candid fun. Friends meandered the grounds, enjoying the country inspired buffet, fire-roasted marshmallow bar, cigars and selection of sweets (hand picked favorites of the bride and groom).

Hans Huffman with mad DJ skills kept the party going with uproarious laughter and some epic tunes. It was a beautiful night.
When sunset was upon us, Eric and his new bride walked out to the vineyard for a final moment of quiet respite and glorious light. This is always my favorite time, a time to breathe, a time to capture that glow of evening and a time to fully embrace the love shared between the two.
It was everything it should be, and the final partings were made as husband and wife sent their guests away with their favorite tea flavors in individual packages.

Tuscan Wedding Inspiration In Portland

A wedding in Italy would no-doubt be awesome, but sometimes your budget dictates you play out that dream closer to home. Enter this Tuscan-inspired shoot by Champagne Wedding Coordination with all the accoutrements — lemons everywhere, light-as-air cakes from Lux Sucre — within the comfort of Opal 28.  Thanks to Hoddick Photography, there’s a whole gallery of inspiration.

From Champagne Wedding CoordinationWe wanted to inspire couples who have visions of a destination wedding under the Tuscan sun but don’t have the budget. You can bring all of the romantic details of Italy to the Northwest in this lovely boutique venue, Opal 28 in Portland, Oregon.

The inspiration for our stylized shoot came from lemons which remind us of the Tuscan sun. We took cues from Tuscany and citrus orchards to create an elegant and rich look. We played off of the warm feel of Opal 28 and used lots of ivories, lemon, olive, and deep toned wood.

Lux Sucre carried the theme through to the decadent flavors of the desserts while playing up beautiful details on a simple color palette. Tie That Binds created a gorgeous invitation suite, menus, and personalized signs as well darling lemon leaf place-cards. Zest Floral used ivory, greens and light yellow to create a lush and delicate look for the entire shoot.

For the more traditional ceremony look, we put the bride in a cathedral length veil and beautifully detailed dress from Ania Couture and the groom in a distinctive tuxedo by Tuxedo Warehouse through Este’s. The romantic updo by Jennifer at Face Body Beauty easily transitioned to cascading curls, accented by a delicate floral crown from Zest for a more relaxed reception look. Sahlia Jewelry provided the uniquely gorgeous hairpiece for the ceremony look and all the jewelry for both bridal looks.

Homemade Family-Infused Portland, Oregon Wedding

Homemade equals heartfelt in my book, and that couldn’t be more true with this darling DIY wedding captured by Stephanie Kaloi Photography. This adorable couple let their personality shine through every perfect detail, and boy, do we love every second of it. See even more here

From Stephanie Kaloi PhotographyHaley and Josh had a seriously gorgeous and small(ish!) wedding at the North Star Ballroom in Portland, Oregon. I’m kind of obsessed with these guys — besides the venue and the photography, everything was completely homemade by the couple and their friends and family. They wrapped yarn around hearts and hung them up, pulled vases and glasses from thrift stores and family collections, and did one another’s hair and make-up. Haley’s brother sang “Bloom” by The Paper Kites as she walked up the aisle (and everything cried), and her aunt made all of the amaaaaazing pie that was served. Haley and Josh are truly lucky to have such a tight knit group around them — and it also made for pretty hilarious photos (especially on the groom’s side!).

The wedding was inside, which is super smart for this time of year in Portland (rain!) but also just a really Portland thing — our city is filled with so many amazing, unique venues, and this is one of them. The North Star Ballroom is filled with classic Portland charm, and Haley and Josh’s wedding set this vibe off juuuuust right. Even though they’re from Bend, these two are emblematic of what’s great about Portland (and really, Oregon in general): it’s modern, fun, and definitely it’s own thing — like the two of them.

They also had a really cool unity ceremony — instead of using sand or candles, they used paint! Haley and pink paint and Josh had gray paint (to go with the colors of the day) and they poured their paint on a canvas at the same time. It was awesome! I haven’t seen a unity ceremony like that in the 6 years I’ve been shooting. :) Another first: Josh completely lost it and cried during the first look! I’ve definitely worked with emotional grooms before, but I’ve never had one full on cry during the first look. It was the sweetest thing!

I also love how these guys weren’t afraid to just totally be themselves. Haley has part of her head shaved, and everyone was super concerned about it showing on her wedding day. She intentionally styled her hair so that it would — and it looked amazing! Little things like this paired with their more traditional attire were just the best.
