Chic Lakeside Country Club Wedding

With a team of talented vendors and all roads leading lakeside, this soiree is overflowing with personal details. From the rose garden inspired Sadie’s Couture Floral & Design buds, to handmade signage, every detail Laura Dawson coordinated is significant. Each image from Jeff Loves Jessica is more beautiful than the last and you can see them all here!

From The Bride…Our vision was of an intimate, Minnesota summer wedding full of personal details. Knowing that many of our guests would be visiting Minnesota for the first time, we wanted to showcase the beauty of our home state with an outdoor reception. We also loved the romantic feel of having string lights under a starry sky above our dance floor. I had an image from Pinterest which I carried with me to vendor meetings so they could get a clear understanding of the mood we were striving to provoke.

We explored a number of venue options until we realized the obvious choice right in front of us: Minikahda (Ojibway for “On the edge of the water”), the century-old Minneapolis club I had grown up at. We approached The Minikahda Club with our “out-of-box” vision to host the entire reception on the roof-deck overlooking Lake Calhoun, and from which the view of the Minneapolis skyline after dark is dazzling. Jenni, the coordinator at the club, enthusiastically embraced our vision and her staff executed it flawlessly.

Minneapolis doesn’t mean “City of Lakes” for nothing, and we were blessed with the use of three for our festivities. Our reception overlooked Lake Calhoun, and just south is Lake Harriet where we had our “first look” and bridal party photos. They were taken at the Lake Harriet rose garden where I frequently wandered as a child. From there it was a quick trip back north to the church on Lake of the Isles where Nick and I had gone ice skating on our second date.

Winters in Minnesota are conducive to DIY projects, and I probably had up to five ongoing wedding “projects” at any given time, taking over our living and dining rooms. However, knowing that I had created all the signs, monogramed the napkins and candles, and designed the stationary and decor layout, made our wedding more personal. In addition, the necklaces my bridesmaids wore were custom designed by me and made in Shanghai when I traveled there for work. Other personal details included my veil, which has been in my family since the 1830s, and the flower girl dress, which I had worn 25 years before in my Uncle’s wedding. His daughters were now my attendants. Of course, our very much-loved maltipoo, “Peaches,” had to play a role, so we named one of our signature cocktails after her. The other signature cocktail was named after a very special place: Madeline Island in Lake Superior where my family spends summers.

While the weather did go our way, not everything went according to plan. Despite the limo forgetting to pick up the groomsmen for pictures, despite the antique car breaking down on the way to the reception, despite the groom getting a bloody nose minutes before the ceremony, and despite the father of the bride stepping into a large pile of dog waste right outside the church, our day was flawless. The best advice I was given during the planning process was to control the “controllables” and on the day of the wedding, just let it all go. So, being the type-A bride that I was, I spent months creating color-coded, personalized day-of schedules for each member of the bridal party. Months meeting with vendors to review the floor plans and highly detailed floor and table grids drawn up by me for all pieces of wedding décor. Weeks solving the unexpected like our linens being discontinued before the wedding. And days coordinating a custom designed necklace to be remade in Shanghai and picked up by one of my coworkers after the original was lost in the mail. But, had I not sat back and had faith that all our outstanding wedding vendors would do their jobs, knowing that I had done all I could possibly do to “control” our day to its ultimate perfection, I would not have recognized the magic and memories that encapsulated our wedding. It was truly perfect. A special thank you to all who participated, we couldn’t have done it without you!

From the beautiful Bride… Our wedding day was so special and memorable. Though it rained—and rained, and rained—we had the greatest time celebrating with our friends and families. I have never felt so loved.

When we saw Camrose Hill Farm, Alex and I instantly knew that was where we were going to get married. Even in the winter, it felt like a dream. The beauty and intimacy of the little flower farm made it the perfect place for us to plan out each detail and celebrate with loved ones.

I am so grateful for all of the people who helped make our wedding so wonderful. I met the greatest people during the planning process and cannot believe the time, talent, and love that went into our day. We have nothing but the best of memories.

Sweet and Sophisticated Botanical Wedding

A wedding filled with breath-taking Flora Bella blooms is a surefire way to put a huge smile on my face. So, when Studio Laguna sent over this stunner, sprinkled with the prettiest of bouquets my happy place just got a little bit happier. I could spend hours upon hours in this gorgeous gallery admiring every lovely detail, and it’s all right here just waiting!

From Katrina at Studio LagunaSweet, modern, and sophisticated. This gorgeous affair was filled with metallic accents and botanical beauty. Soft pink peonies with a hint of bright vibrancy set the scene. With the weather cooperating, there was no rain, the sun came out as they said their vows and a lovely sunset graced their reception.

The Bride was the perfect combination of modern and classic. She chose accents of mercury glass, Victorian inspired botanical drawings, soft textures, and sparkle updated with bold colors and simplicity.

The day began with the Bridal party getting ready in the hotel, even the couple’s dog Maggie was present! Afterwards, we went to downtown Hastings in Wisconsin (just across the river) to do our formal pictures of the couple. John and I had scouted locations ahead of time and found this old Bugatti factory that fit the Bride’s desire for urban and rustic backgrounds. We thought the old high end car logo went perfectly with the wedding look. We were battling rain all day, but the group was awesome to work with despite the sprinkling sky.

At the ceremony, the sun started to peek through the clouds and by the reception we had gorgeous golden light. The ceremony and reception took place under a beautiful draped tent overlooking the hillsides of Minnesota country. The classic details of chandeliers, crystal, and tall floral arrangements paired beautifully with the view of hillsides and trees. Butlers passed hors d’oeuvres, signature cocktails, cupcakes, and traditional kransekake.

When the sun set, brightly colored uplights made the tent so vibrant, and cafe lights in the trees had a romantic feel. We took the Bride and Groom to a rustic barn on the property for some lovely sunset pictures, and enjoyed watching the swallows dart around them.

From Emily Steffen… Tyler and Jen planned a romantic, nature inspired wedding at a historic mansion in Rochester, MN! A designer meets illustrator wedding that was intimate and full of fun! :) They chose the Plummer house for it’s laid-back feel and ability to accommodate an outdoor under-the-stars evening for family and friends. Guests arrived, and were escorted to the sunken gardens where Jen had dreamed up and crafted a texture-filled pastel, crepe paper backdrop against the tall trees. The reception was filled with beautiful flowers, hand painted table numbers, deer antlers, gold accents and lots of laughter from friends! :) The bistro lights hanging in the trees did an awesome job escorting in the night as guests left for home with a custom, hand painted thank you from Jen and Tyler!

From The Bride… On August 9, 2013 my life changed forever. I met Andrew almost by accident, but I believe fate intervened. I was meeting a few friends at a local drinking establishment to watch the MN Vikings first pre-season game. One of the girls I was meeting ran into a few people she used to work with, Andrew being one of them. We all watched the game together with Andrew and I sitting right next to each other. Instead of watching the game, though, we just talked and talked…finding out we had so much in common. Unable to resist the chemistry and connection we had, we began dating officially on January 1, 2014. From then on, our romance was a whirlwind. We both knew we had met the love of our life and on May 24th, 2014 Andrew proposed to me atop a hill overlooking the beautiful Michel-Schlumberger vineyard. All of my dreams came true at that moment. I was going to marry my best friend.

At first, Andrew and I had a very difficult time deciding when and where to get married. After considering many destination locations, we knew without a doubt that we wanted to get married in our home with our friends and family on Thanksgiving Day. Throughout our entire relationship, Andrew and I deeply (and often!) appreciate how blessed we were to find each other and how lucky we are to be taking this journey as a couple. As such, it seemed perfect to get married on the day in which we give thanks. Our home is considered an “Urban Farmhouse” – featuring reclaimed wood from Northern Wisconsin and modern amenities – creating a unique blend of old and new. It was a perfect spot for our wedding. For wedding colors we landed on cranberry and dusty blue; perfect for late fall and the holiday.

The theme for our wedding was ‘Gratitude.’ We wanted gratitude to be the staple of our day – gratitude for each other and gratitude for our friends and family. I also insisted, all along, that we keep the wedding “casually elegant.”  I didn’t want to go overboard, but rather I wanted it to be simple, stylish and appealing. Our wedding planner and florist did an amazing job with everything! Andrew wanted to surprise me with the decorating, so he worked with Krista & Karolee throughout the planning process. The first time I saw the wedding area was when I was walking down the aisle. Talk about trusting the experts! To say I was blown away was an understatement.

There are so many special touches that made our day absolutely perfect. I have to say my wedding planner, Krista, thought of everything! From the lanterns guiding the way up the front steps to the Welcome chalkboard greeting guests. From the MN Vikings Groom’s cake to the basket of blankets in the heated tent. From the real-flower collar for Cooper to the beautiful placards describing every detail. From the “doggie” boxes for leftovers to the beautiful and ‘grateful’ bottles of wine. From the liters of Fireball to the after-party snack feast. Krista thought of every single thing we could ever want or need.

We have so many special memories of the day! One of my favorites was the memorial area we set aside to honor both of our fathers, who had previously passed away. We had pictures, flowers and candles in a special area that became the area where we lit our unity candle. Our mothers lit the smaller candles in memory of our fathers and then we used those candles to light the unity candle. Another special moment of the day was visiting Lake Harriett to take pictures. We had been there for our engagement pictures, so we wanted to go again on our wedding day. We had no way of knowing that it would be the coldest Thanksgiving in history! In any case, the pictures were exquisite and totally worth freezing my toes off. And, finally, our most favorite thing was the feeling we both had throughout the entire day. To be in our home with our closest family & friends – amongst the soft candlelight, marrying each other. It was truly the perfect day.

Minnesota Fishing-Themed Engagement

I’m a firm believer that engagement sessions are a chance for couple’s personalities to shine. To showcase common interests while basking in the love. It’s exactly what this Minnesota duo set out to capture, and according to the photos by Meg Cooper? Mission accomplished. See the full fishing-themed afternoon right here.

From the Bride-to-be… Corey and I casually met in my hometown of Stevens Point, WI in December of 2011. We had exchanged contacts after learning that Corey had accepted an internship in Rochester, MN where I had resided for the past seven years. We later met up in June of 2012 and decided that our connection was something deeper than just friends. As time went on, I realized I could not spend the rest of my life without this man and instead wanted to spend the rest of my life with him.

It was the evening of the NCAA Basketball Tournament as the Wisconsin Badgers defeated the Arizona Wildcats and moved onto the Final Four. Both of us born and raised in Wisconsin, this game was very exciting for us! After asking my Father’s permission, Corey proposed at halftime in my parents’ house in the presence of my entire family. I was totally blown away and completely surprised! I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. It was very special to me that my family was able to be a part of our very special day. My parents will never forget that night, nor will I!

We love the outdoors and heading to Northern Wisconsin to the cabin fishing, boating and swimming. We decided that a fishing theme would be a perfect fit for our engagement session. My Great-Grandpa made a fish filet cutting board back in the day that my Grandma still had. I painted the words, “Two less fish in the sea” on the sign to use as a prop in our session. My Grandpa used to do a lot of wood work in his younger years. I was able to get him back in the wood shop and create a fish made out of wood to use as a sign in our session.

We stained the piece and painted our wedding date, “10-25-2014” on it. We are very spontaneous people, so the water and beach scene was easy for us. We had fun with it and it showed in the pictures. Our canoeing scene was the more romantic piece. Our engagement pictures tell a story of Corey and myself and the love we have for one another!

Vintage Pastel Garden Bridal Inspiration

Looking to get lost in a little lovely this morning? Well, look no further than this stunning garden shoot from Jeff Loves Jessica. With lovely florals from Ashley Fox Designs and picture perfect styling, every image sitting pretty in this gallery will surely inspire your day. See them all here

From Jeff Loves JessicaSpringtime in the Midwest is a long-awaited yet fleeting season. While warm evening light and green grass are enough to celebrate, we set out to create a bridal inspiration shoot that would capture the goodness we adore about late springtime, just before fades into summer. The overall design scheme was light, airy and elegant, with feminine lace, and pastel touches. Perhaps the most notable feature of the shoot was a nod to our feathered friends, with a brass bird perched on the table top and tiny glittered nests at each place setting. We even found a freshly hatched chick for our model to snuggle! Ashley Fox, a gifted floral designer, worked to incorporate blooms that were in-season and native to our area, such as lilac, clematis, apple blossoms, and perhaps best of all, an astilbe flower crown. Pale pink depression glass and small milk glass bud vases brought whimsy and texture to the top of the vintage dining table. For a soft, elegant look, Paperista created an invitation suite using fine fabric, with luxurious lace envelope liners. In the same vein, dinner menus were custom designed and printed directly onto linen napkins draped at each place setting. A two-tiered bundt cake with drizzled icing was the focal point of the dessert dresser, but it was also important to us to add the warmth and sustenance of a variety of foods, including a basket of miniature olive loaves, along with small trays of madeleines, buchee, and nougat from Patisserie 46. A vintage bike and wicker basket made a lovely setting for the brides bouquet, while the bride’s simple flowing tulle and lace applique gown perfectly fit the bill for the outdoor garden breeze.

Inspiration for the Littlest Members of the Wedding Party

So often we see adorable flower girls and the dapperest of ring bearers gracing the pages of SMP, and now, we have whimsical inspiration dedicated to these wee ones. From crazy cute outfit ideas to a children’s table that will surely getting a standing ovation, this shoot crafted by Whitepeacock Styled Events + Munster Rose and Liz Banfield is the true definition of charming.

From Liz Banfield PhotographyInspired by a cotton floral print from Liberty of London found in a children’s party dress by Oscar de la Renta, photographer Liz Banfield and creative powerhouse Whitepeacock Styled Events set out to capture a spring wedding design to compliment an adorable flower girl and ring bearer. The exuberant palette of pink, mango, and turquoise informed all the charming details, including a “kids-only” table featuring card games, custom name balloons, strawberry milk jars rimmed with sprinkles, macaron “pops,” and glitter cupcakes. What child wouldn’t feel special at this event? Whitepeacock also created a vibrant table skirt made of ribbons, lace trim, and pom-poms to compliment the vintage table.

Not afraid of a little DIY, a ring pillow was sewn from turquoise gingham with a contrasting mini-pom trim placed on a wood plate from Muji. The flower girl “basket” was adapted (with two drilled holes) from a coordinating wood bowl, adorned with a sweet floral trim from Daytona Braids & Trimming in NYC. Striped straws were transformed into “waving wands” with the application of ribbons.

Floral designer Jackie Reisnauer of Munster Rose updated the typical flower girl headpiece by grouping the flowers in an asymmetrical arrangement. A combination of seasonal spring blooms — Scabiosa, Garden Roses, Ranunculus, Sweet William, and Italian Ruscus — highlighted the color palette as well as the flower girl’s charming curls. For the ring bearer, a scaled down boutonniere complimented his dapper Oscar de la Renta linen jacket and plaid bow-tie.

To make the duo feel extra special, individual mini-cakes were created by Banfield using and easy fondant recipe (comprised mostly of store bought marshmallows!) found online. Miniature cookie cutters were used to cut out simple floral shapes and then topped off with a simple decorative sugar pearl.

Wine & Dine Welcome Dinner

Let me set the scene –  it’s the beginning of what will prove to be the best weekend your life, your friends and family are arriving, and the table is set for a fab Welcome Dinner. Now enter this inspiration full of greenery styled by Studio Fleurette + This Love Weddings and wine. Lots and lots of wine. It’s a relaxed yet totally elegant approach to welcoming captured by Laura Ivanova  that is sure to inspire.

From This Love WeddingsMany couples want to offer their guests a fun, relaxed yet stylish welcome to their wedding weekend. We took to creating a welcome dinner that’s sure to inspire. This romantic, organic, natural styled shoot was created at Minneapolis’ Uptown full service wine bar, Spill The Wine. We built the design around the elements of the beautiful space incorporating a wine tasting, chalkboards, and plenty of greenery.

We set the tone with a theme to have guests wine, dine, and unwind. Each place card included a note in beautiful calligraphy, “We pair well together, before we dine enjoy cheese and wine.” The pallette included a cheese and wine pairing featuring Rosé and red wines with a fun See-Swirl-Smell-Sip tutorial as well as wine tasting score cards. The table was dressed with a cascading garland of bay and olive branch mix with lush cream and ivory blooms. A bay, sliver dollar eucalyptus, olive branch mix was used to make the show-stopping chandelier.

Bright “Love in Bloom” Wedding Inspiration

Mondays don’t necessarily win in the popularity contest in days of the week, but sit tight loves, because that’s all about to change. From Splendid Supply Co… In Minnesota, spring starts really late and doesn’t last long, so we wanted to design an inspiration shoot that celebrates the season we so look forward to each year. We used a variety of floral motifs to create an underlying vision for the shoot, including fresh and paper flowers as well as floral patterns and graphics. We then layered in a palette inspired by the first pale blooms of spring paired with some poppy tones to give it a contemporary, less expected look.

The overall shoot style leans modern, with lots of bright white to keep it fresh and hints of gold for a celebratory feel. It was softened by vintage details throughout the design, including the Victorian silhouettes of the table legs and orange goblets, the milk glass vessels with soft, whimsical floral designs, the midcentury vintage tableware and flatware, and the two stunning blush Claire La Faye dresses our bride wore.

From Liz Banfield and Rocket Science Weddings & EventsAccording to Amy and Maury, there are never enough reasons to get dressed up so going with black tie for their wedding was a natural choice. Working with their event designer, Gretchen Culver, they settled on the theme of “Modern Glamour,” inspired by the timeless style of the 1950s but with new twists on classic traditions. This theme fit perfectly with the venue, the historic Minneapolis Club. Both the ceremony and reception would take place here so that guests to move throughout the spaces with ease.

The bride loves Cinderella, so hints of the fairytale showed up throughout the event from the Save the Date card that was designed to look like the Cinderella movie credits to the beverage napkins that read “happily ever after.” And although Amy didn’t wear glass slippers, her knockout Valentino shoes seemed fit for a princess. Amy also got to wear her dream gown, the Vera Wang Luxe “Esther” from L’Atelier Couture Bridal which was accessorized by a train-length black velvet sash. Velvet accents were used throughout the wedding design, including the wedding invitation that was enclosed in a velvet black “tie.”

Inspired by vintage photos of Frank Sinatra, the groom and his groomsmen donned single carnations for boutonnieres. Also to keep his wedding party occupied while waiting for pictures to begin, he had custom playing cards made and set out poker chips along with classic games like backgammon and chess for some old-school entertainment. Later in the reception, these games were also put out for the guests to play.

Instead of a traditional monogram, a unifying theme throughout the design was a custom pattern created by the Gretchen Berry Design that was inspired by the iconic carpet pattern in the Minneapolis Club’s dining room. The graphic pattern was repeated throughout the printed materials.

In a modern twist on the old school “champagne fountain,” glasses of champagne were incorporated into a oversized ice sculpture designed especially to hold modern stemless flutes. This sculpture served as the centerpiece to a pre and post ceremony cocktail hours for guests. And later, these same glasses were washed, filled with candy, and given as a parting gifts.

In keeping with Jewish tradition, the ceremony was timed for after sunset on Saturday. Cool blue tones from the dusky sky outside lit up the oversized leaded glass windows, a beautiful counterpoint to magical candlelit ceremony. The room’s columns were accented with floral garlands, twisting floor to ceiling. With the stage thus set, the bride and her parents emerged from the doors under a canopy of dangling votives and lace installation to evoke “fairy godmother dust” created by Rocket Science Weddings and Events. They arrived at a modern lace chuppa in which each corner of a small stage was anchored with oversize hurricane lanterns that housed gold candelabras. Wishing to be surrounded by their friends and family, the couple chose to have seating along three sides of the chuppa rather than rows of seats behind them.

After cocktail hour, guests were led to the upstairs dining room and greeted by individual “his-and-hers” cake-pop escort cards. Two flavors, hers with a pink and his with an ivory frosting, were sprinkled with edible gold glitter.

Upon entering dinner, the mostly ivory and pink color scheme was transformed to ivory and yellow. This floral transformation complemented the moss green linens and iconic carpet in the dining room, creating a very formal yet fresh feel for dinner.

The couple cut into a four-tier wedding cake iced with ivory buttercream in the club library. The nostalgic confection was adorned with roses and two porcelain cats, representing the couple’s beloved pets.

After a spirited Hora dance, guests mingled, danced, played games and took turns at a photo booth. Mid-reception they were offered an array of late night snacks including 50’s-style malts (complete with authentic white and red straws), sliders and petite grilled cheese sandwiches to keep the dancing going well into the night.

Modern Minnesota Backyard Wedding

When it came time to settle on a location for their long-awaited nuptials, Megan and Justin knew there was no spot better than his childhood home. And with a family of makers and designers to help them plan the day, their backyard wedding turned into an elegant affair with a black and white palette guiding every detail. A Sunshine Moment captured the beauty and lucky for you it’s all waiting here!

From the Bride… Justin and I met in high school. We grew up in a small town, he was a senior and I was a freshman when we first met, so it was a big deal when we sparked a interest for one another. We both knew something was there between us, but we didn’t start dating until years later. Due to various life events (mainly in part to the fact that we were both so young and at very different stages of our lives at that point in time), Justin and I went our separate ways and had little to no contact for 3 years. Then one day, I got a random text message from him. As he would say, he couldn’t stop thinking about me and just decided to reach out to see if I would respond. Obviously fate has different intentions for us than we had expected. We began dating and the rest is history!

When Justin popped the question, we had been together for 6 years and both new we wanted to spend forever with each other, so of course I couldn’t respond “YES” quick enough. Justin proposed in a fairytale-like way. Anyone who knows me, knows that I absolutely LOVE the holiday season. It truly is my favorite time of year, so when Justin popped the question on New Years Eve 2011, it made perfect sense. Going to plays is one of our things we love to do together, so weeks in advance he had planned a date night for us to go see Cinderella at a local theater and grab dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in the city. On the night of New Years Eve, 2011, we walked out of the play and it was snowing these huge, puffy, white gorgeous snowflakes, the sight was so beautiful it made me tear up – little did I know what was coming that would make me really cry. He asked if I wanted to go for a walk in the park that is across from the theater. The park had all the trees light up, dripping in gorgeous, sparkly white lights. We walked hand-in-hand, soaking up the beauty of the snow, loving that moment with each other…. And then Justin got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. It was truly a magical moment.

When we began discussing the details of our big day, we considered everything from getting married on a mountain top in Vancouver to a Chateau in the French countryside, but after much deliberation (over a year) we landed on home, literally, Justin’s childhood home. Twenty acres of trees, rolling hills, and open grassland in a small town northwest of Minneapolis, Minnesota. A place that encompasses our history, our present lives and our future! Home is where the heart is, and that is truly the case for us. Justin isn’t very emotional…yet, the thought of celebrating our marriage surrounded by family and friends where he grew up brought tears to his eyes. At that moment, we knew the Zwieg home is where we needed to make the day! The close relationships with our family and friends is what means the most to us, so we wanted all of our loved ones to be a part of our special day.

One of the biggest challenges of our wedding was that we finally solidified the date and location four months (Yes – FOUR MONTHS!) before we said I do at the Zwieg home! Needless to say it was a busy four months for everyone involved, especially because we did most everything as a family…thus, truly a “family affair!” Justin comes from a family of designers (Justin is an Art Director/Graphic Designer; his brother Jamison, is an Interior Designer; his Mom is a Designer, his dad isn’t a designer per se, but he can make or do just about anything.) It only seemed fitting that we put all of our brains together and decide to conquer this fete together. Justin and I’s big focus for the wedding was simple; we wanted it to be comfortable and welcoming for our guests, beautiful (in a tangible and intangible way) and we wanted it to feel like us, both as individuals and as a couple.

Our color palette was sophisticated with mostly black, white and silver with a little pop of pink for some fun! For us, everything is in the details, so every tiny aspect was planned out for very specific reasons. Justin designed our own personal crest, which we used throughout the wedding on large signs, coasters, and napkins. We plan to use this family crest for years to come! My mother-in-law planted all of the urns and outside arrangements, and made all of the bouquets. Our Mom’s and Justin’s siblings helped plan the entire wedding. My father-in-law had a rigorous mowing and watering schedule to ensure that the yard and plants were kept in impeccable condition throughout the heat of the summer.

My dad created the pergola structure where we got married underneath, cut all the wood slabs and loaned us his deer antlers for the nature element in the table centerpieces and throughout. My girlfriends helped me make the “Love is Sweet” sign on the dessert table and our table numbers. The guys all helped wrap the trees with white lights – dozens of trees! Justin’s high school friend was our officiant. My brother-in-law, Jamison, is an incredible designer and he took all of the pieces we imagined, and all of our desires and turned the location into a masterpiece. He set every table with help of family members, added his black crystal chandelier to the pergola to add flair…added some lamps to add ambiance and luxury to our head table…he cut the grass in a cross cut pattern to make sure it was perfect for our walk down the aisle…among so much of his design work. Jamison and I even went to Otten Brothers Nursery in Orono, MN (a family nursery on my Dad’s side) and were able to borrow dozens of trees and shrubs to add to our estate décor – wow! Everything, and I mean everything, about our wedding was done in four months and with the help of our families and friends.

Our big day was magical! We woke up to a beautiful, sunny, Minnesota summer day. The heat was on, not only temperature wise, but also getting everyone and everything ready for our 5pm event of our lifetimes. This past summer was one of the hottest summer in years. The girls got ready at my childhood home, while our families were rushing around at Justin’s childhood home getting everything setup and in place. The time flew by! Before we knew it, guests were arriving and it was show time. The energy was high, love was in the air and the emotions were a roller coaster ride – this was the day that Justin and I had been looking forward to for years. As the ceremony began, the sky went from bright and sunny to dark grey. It was mystical, ethereal – but not a drop of rain fell. We got through our very intimate ceremony, did the entire receiving line and once every last guest was seated and Justin and I walked into the tent to start the reception – with a strike of lighting and a crack of thunder, it started pouring rain. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect… it was a refreshing, summer evening rain that cooled the temperature down.

We weren’t interested in the typical banquet food, so we hired a caterer that came onsite and grilled everything outside. We served delicious, comfort food that everyone loves – angus burgers, chicken sandwiches and mac ‘n cheese for the main course and dessert was a local bakery’s delectable Tres Leche cake and my dad’s famous homemade chocolate chip cookies. Our wedding was a black tie event, but Justin and I are passionate about good food and wanted our guests to really enjoy their dinner. Our menu juxtaposed with black tie attire was the casual elegance that we wanted to accomplish on our wedding day. After dinner, our fathers, siblings’ and dearest friends gave the most touching speeches. Truly one of our most favorite moments of the evening. They were the longest, most thoughtful speeches I have ever experienced. There was not a dry eye in the house. After the speeches, we turned down the lights and danced the night away. Throughout the night the thousands of twinkle lights and bunches of tiki torches stayed light and sparkled all night. The rain added to the ambiance of the evening and according to an old fortune says that rain on your wedding day is good luck.

Our families and close-knit group of friends made everything come together perfectly. The day was an absolute dream come true. We couldn’t have asked for a better celebration to mark the next chapter of our lives together.

Rustic Northwoods Minnesota Wedding

I’m a bit of a sap at weddings. I cry at every single one of them. It’s gotten to the point where I can tell, if I were invited to the wedding, how much I would cry tears of happiness for the couple. Well, it is safe to say I would be a total mess at this wedding from Wildernesses Photography. Because the love this couple and their families have for each other is beautifully obvious, and you can see exactly what I mean here.

Rustic

From Wildernesses PhotographyWhen Stephanie and Lisa got engaged in the fall of 2012, they didn’t dream of having a “real” wedding. They intended on committing themselves in the presence of close friends and family at a rustic, out-of-the-way cabin in the woods of northern Minnesota, but they didn’t think that they would be able to officially call themselves wife and wife when the time came. That all changed when Minnesota passed the Marriage Equality bill in May of 2013. When the law went into effect on August 1st, Stephanie and Lisa had less than a month for it to sink in that they would, in fact, be wife and wife on their wedding day at the end of August!

Stephanie and Lisa are both huge lovers of nature and the outdoors, so it made complete sense that they were going to tie the knot in the middle of a Minnesota forest. They wanted to be as eco-friendly and as DIY as possible, so their party favors for their guests were glass mason jars which they decorated with twine and name tags. The guests could bring their jar to the bartender and get it refilled with their beverage of choice all night long! Plus, they could then take their jar home and reuse it. It was a huge hit and everyone adored it.

The day was absolutely magical, and everything from the venue (a woodsy, rustic cabin in the pines of northern Minnesota) to the food (traditional Minnesota comfort food like prime rib and mashed potatoes) to the decor (freshly-cut wildflowers, vintage glass bottles and softly-glowing candles) was beyond perfect. It was an absolute dream come true for Stephanie, Lisa, their three kids, Cooper the dog, and their family and friends. If I could shoot this wedding again, I’d do it in a heartbeat, no questions asked. That’s how amazing it was.

Bohemian Inspired Barn Wedding

There’s nothing better — and more Midwestern — than sitting in a barn at season’s change, watching hues of gold take the rolling hills. Add a wedding, and that, my friends, is pure magic. Planner Lizie Anne helped her hippie-hearted bride make her countryside nuptials as chic and lovely as can be. The pictures from Joanna Day Photography speak for themselves and you can find even more in the full gallery.

From Lizie Anne WeddingsJustin and Christina desired a wedding that was full of family and love. With an intimate setting at Hope Glen Farm as the backdrop, we created the perfect wedding for them.

I like to think that Christina is half hippy, so I designed the wedding with that always in the back of my mind! From the lace to the floral crown – nothing was overlooked in making sure Christina’s vision was spot on!

Perhaps the most stunning design piece brought in, was the lush greenery chandelier that hung over their heads for the ceremony. We later situated that same chandelier over the head table. With the rolling meadow in behind them, and the head table dripping with greenery as well, it was a picture perfect scene. All the floral had the hand picked, straight from the fields look to it, and complimented perfectly.

I brought in some hand cut larger wood pieces for the unity candle and family bible, and painted them white to give it more of a polished / yet perfectly rustic look. To compliment those, I placed smaller pieces of wood down the aisle with candles sitting atop.

Vintage chargers and vintage dish-ware made the family style meal that much more perfect! During dinner, Christina and Justin sang a song they wrote to their guests. Not many eyes were dry following that!

To give honor to Justin who is in the air force and Christina’s dad who just left the air force, they had a table set aside for those who could not share the day with them.

The guests enjoyed a late night popcorn bar as they danced or lounged in the vintage couches surrounding them. The perfect end to a perfect day for the sweetest couple.
