Spring Mansion Wedding at Cylburn Arboretum

Pink peonies are a surefire way to my wedding loving heart and this next springtime affair is overflowing with plenty. Returning to the place where their love story began, these college cuties wed surrounded magnolia trees and merriment. It’s a day filled with beauty and bliss that’ll have you weak in the knees. See the entire as told through the lens of Love By Serena right over here!

From Love By Serena… This spring, I had the pleasure of documenting Amy and Christian’s love for one another. The two of them met while studying at John’s Hopkins University in Baltimore, so it was fitting for them to come back to their place of origin for the big day. They said their vows to one another at the lovely Cylburn Arboretum and we spent a beautiful spring day amongst the blossoming Magnolia trees. It truly couldn’t have been more perfect and a huge thanks goes out to the talented Elle Ellinghaus Designs for making everything run so smoothly!

Elegant Ballroom Wedding

Having dreamt of her wedding since childhood, this beautiful Bride knew exactly what she wanted her Big Day to entail. The vision? A romantic-glam fall fête at the Belvedere & Co. Events overflowing with elegant details. Dyanna Joy Photography was on hand to capture every moment of merriment and you can see it all unfold, here!

From the beautiful Bride… I had dreamt about my wedding day since I was a little girl, even more so than most little girls, because my mother was in the wedding industry and I was surrounded by bridal gowns every day! But I must say, our actual wedding turned out to be more amazing than my wildest dreams.

We knew that we wanted a fall wedding, so we settled on Thanksgiving weekend because I have cousins in the US Naval Academy, and they were an integral part of our wedding. It was a chilly weekend in Baltimore, but we hardly noticed. The sun was shining and that’s all that mattered! My Allure dress was the centerpiece and inspiration for the rest of our wedding planning. I loved the Swarovski crystals and beading, and the soft flow of the English Net skirt. My vision was set on a romantic-glam theme with an elegant vibe.

We chose to have our wedding ceremony at The Baltimore Basilica. My family is Roman Catholic, and the Basilica is the most iconic church in Baltimore, as well as the first cathedral in America! We felt blessed to be able to have our ceremony in such a sacred and beautiful church. My grandfather gave me away, and sharing that moment with him was the most special experience of my life.

I fell in love with the ballroom at The Belvedere as soon as I laid eyes on it. It was glamourous, yet not over-the-top. I wanted a ballroom with spectacular chandeliers, and the chandeliers in the Charles Ballroom’s could not be beat! We loved the combination of plum and gold, and the ballroom complemented those colors perfectly. With the 1930’s vibe of the iconic landmark, I really wanted the reception to feel elegant, timeless, and classy. I incorporated lots of softly-lit candles, gold sparkling placecards, and neutral uplighting. The flowers were a mix of purples, greens, and whites; matching the bridesmaids bouquets. The gold candelabras were a must, and I fell in love with them as soon as I laid eyes on them! The head table was something that we truly loved; it was amazing to be surrounded by our family and bridal party and let them know how much they mean to us.

The most important thing to us about our reception was for the dance floor to be packed all night long– and it was! My family is Italian, and adding some Italian elements to our reception was very important to me. Dancing to The Tarantella was our favorite part of the reception!

From Dyanna Joy PhotographyIt was the day after Thanksgiving. Christine was flawless in her Allure princess style wedding gown, as if she was born to wear this dress. On this day, she was the center of the universe and everyone revolved around her, admiring her beauty, her grace, and smile.

White and purple flowers were delivered, champagne was poured, and Justin couldn’t take his eyes off his bride in white.

The sun had set and it was time for the ceremony. Christine walked down the lengthy, awe-inspiring aisle, holding on to the arms of her grandfather. And when she finally made it to the front, Justin was there to take her hand, as he will be for the rest of their lives, whether it’s to ask her to dance or to help her out of a car. Her hands will always be safe in his.

After the ceremony, guests enjoyed drinks, dinner, and dancing at the Belvedere Hotel.

Glamorous Private Estate Wedding

If you’re a fan of glamorous, at-home weddings with a whole lot of romance thrown in for good measure, this pretty little affair is about to make your Monday.  Think drop-dead gorgeous blooms from Simply Beautiful Flowers, stunning pink hues and beautiful captures from Love By Serena filling the entire gallery.  Annie Banks approved?  Yes, indeed.

From the Bride…  After about three years of dating, Doug proposed to me at a restaurant in DC, where we celebrated our one year anniversary together. That morning, he had made a trip up to Baltimore to talk to my parents and ask for their permission. This was under the ruse that he was at work.

We chose to tie the knot at my childhood home in Baltimore, Maryland. I love the combination of gold and pink and thought that would add to the elegance of the evening. To match my love of the color pink and my sister’s dress, various shades of pink floral details were included in the design. We incorporated navy into the mix for Doug, so it wasn’t too feminine. I love crafting, so I wanted to add some elements of my own: some of the signs and straw flags (with a lot of Doug’s help). We also wanted marquee letters of our initials, so Doug decided to make them himself! He was crafting them up until the very day of our wedding!

It was the most fabulous day and, every time I hear our song “Sweet Disposition,” I begin to cry and remember the most awesome day ever. I loved celebrating with Doug, our families, and friends!

Urban Elopement Styled Shoot

I’m not one to constantly wish for a wedding re-do (hard to imagine, I know), but if I could do it all over again, this pretty little bundle of elopement inspiration would be IT.  From those gorgeous florals from Blush Floral Design to the beautiful details from Lauren Niles Events to that killer makeup by Amie Decker Beauty.  See it all captured by L Hewitt Photography right here.

From L Hewitt Photography… This Urban Elopement themed styled shoot at the Four Seasons Baltimore will steal your heart. It is bursting with the little sensory pleasures of fall and tickles the brain with its refined, understated, modern design.

We wanted to push the boundaries of fashion and romance for this shoot. The story follows a modern couple amid the mid-century design of the Four Seasons. They have an intimate breakfast in bed, get ready and travel together to their organic rooftop nupitals overlooking the skyline of Baltimore.

We wanted the groom to be as smartly dressed as the bride. His lush amaranthine velvet coat reminiscent of crushed blackberries at the end of summer. Her silk gown is a touch of traditional glamour, finished with a luxe pailleted wrap.

The florals were designed with the rich, saturated colors of foraged fall. The cake is a refined exercise in simplicity of design and texture, with its marbled, berry scattered surface.

Classic Plum Baltimore Wedding

My latest (and completely out of the norm) color obsession? Purple. I’m not talking the Barney kind of purple, I’m talking gorgeously rich hues of plum, burgundy and dusty lavender—the ‘grown up’ purples if you will. It’s the kind of palette that graced this stunner from Krista A. Jones, and I can’t seem to get enough. Along with every elegant touch, you can soak up this classic beauty right here!

From the beautiful Bride… Howard and I met at work; unfortunately he left his job about 3 weeks after I started to attend medical school. I wasn’t sure if I’d see him again but he made sure we didn’t lose contact. He invited me to a concert to see his favorite band, The Killers, and after that we were pretty much inseparable. When you date someone that is attending medical school you learn to make the most of your time together because you don’t get much of it. It wasn’t always easy but we made it work and he graduated in May 2013. I was so proud of him graduating and starting residency that I definitely didn’t expect him to propose any time soon. However, he surprised me the weekend of his birthday on October 19, 2013 by proposing in our little Baltimore row house living room – it was perfect!

I always knew that I wanted a fall wedding which gave me just under a year to plan our October 4, 2014 nuptials. I love the weather and the colors that autumn brings; however, I didn’t want to use the traditional orange and red color palette associated with fall so I decided to go a different route and use eggplant purple and gray as my two main colors with accents of ivory, gold, and silver throughout. Since Howard and I both love wine and took a recent trip to Napa Valley, I wanted to incorporate wine into the décor and also thought that it would go well with the eggplant purple hue I chose for the bridesmaids dresses and flowers. My florist, Brigid from Mobtown Florals, helped me create the “Napa Valley Vintage” theme for our big day by providing the flowers, mercury glass candle votives, silver urns, and a vintage wooden wine box to hold cards, not to mention adding grapes and pretty purple flower blossoms to the delicious cake from Sugarbakers. My sister and I made the escort card holders out of wine corks that Howard and I had been collecting over the years. I think Brigid described our wedding theme perfectly on her contract: “The overall feeling of the celebration will be rich and romantic, and the décor will embody a ‘Napa Valley’ vintage, vineyard style that celebrates the onset of autumn season with a unique twist from more traditional fall tones of oranges and reds, and will complement the intimate, one of a kind setting.”

We found the venue together and we instantly fell in love with it; it was unlike anything we had seen in our search of typical wedding locations. It was an old brownstone mansion in the Mount Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore. It had beautifully ornate rooms with gilded walls and custom tapestry wallpaper as well as stained glass windows and a gorgeous dark wooden spiral staircase. It was so beautiful on its own that it really didn’t need that much decor; however, Brigid from Mobtown Florals really amplified the venue’s beauty with her fabulous execution of our “Napa Valley Vintage” theme. The ceremony took place just before sunset in the drawing room of the mansion with the aisle lined with glass pillar candles and two gorgeous flower arrangements on silver wooden columns to define the alter space. The party then moved into the rich mahogany library for cocktail hour and then the lavish ballroom for dinner. Finally the reception was held in the atrium which had a glass ceiling and twinkle lights everywhere – it gave a magical outdoor ambiance to our indoor reception where we literally danced the night away. Everything about our wedding day was beautiful and romantic and couldn’t have been done without the help of my vendors and all of our friends and family that made the day absolutely wonderful! I’m so grateful that my amazing photographer, Krista Jones, was able to capture all the special moments and details of the day for us to cherish forever!

Napa Valley Inspired Rehearsal Dinner in Maryland

The rehearsal dinner: a time to sit back and breathe before the beautiful chaos of the big day. It’s an intimate event for relaxing and celebrating with only the closest of family and friends – which is why hosting a backyard dinner party is such a fabulous idea. With a 43-person long table and a string of globe lights against the June sky, Victoria Clausen Florals set the perfect Napa Valley inspired scene for an amazing affair. From Living Radiant PhotographyThis past June 7th, Living Radiant Photography joined Victoria Clausen Floral Events who put on a beautiful Napa Valley Inspired Rehearsal Dinner in the backyard of a newly married couple. They married the following day at Caves Valley Country Club. This 43 person long table was set out under a beautiful June sky with globe lights. The wooden table set was set with white antiqued lanterns, mason jars covered in burlap and jute, with a sweet breeze in the air to compliment it. The background was a wooded scene and rolling hills.

Classic Maryland Country Club Wedding

Fact: I can’t resist a classic wedding. They’re sort of my weakness. The big, white dress, the romantic calligraphy and elegant reception design get me every time, and this country club affair is the perfect example. It’s got all of the above (plus so much more) and you can head to the gallery from Meghan Boyer to see for yourself. Pssst: must-watch video from Cord 3 Films below!

[iframe //player.vimeo.com/video/96616293?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0&color=8b7eb9 600 338]

From Meghan Boyer Photography… Alicyn and Matt’s celebration started in the chapel of the university where they first met, Loyola University in Baltimore. Surrounded by family and friends, the priest, a close family friend, joined them as husband and wife in a mass full of tradition and joy.

Guests then headed to Hillendale Country Club to celebrate the beautiful couple. Matt is a golf pro and many of his family and friends play the game, (and play it well!) so this lovely course and clubhouse was the perfect choice to gather and celebrate.

The ballroom was elegantly set up with a combination of square and rectangular tables topped with candles and gorgeous arrangements varying in height. The floral design was classic and white with a mix of hydrangea, roses, and peonies.

Much time was put into the many personal touches; the signature cocktail (a mint mojito), the table dedicated to loved ones who have passed, the basket of flip flops for guests to wear while dancing, the guest book with the couples favorite golf courses. And many of the stunning details were hand made by the bride’s mother including both of the belts the bride wore with her dress, the ring bearer pillow, and traditional polish apron.

From Marta LocklearRecently I had the pleasure of capturing an inspiration shoot put on by a brand new venue, award winning caterer and the lovely Diana of Eventi Planning. I must say Mt. Washington Mill Dye House is the perfect location for urban/rustic weddings and receptions. With tons of natural light and natural character very little is needed to dress up the space.

Diana brought in a wonderful team of vendors for this shoot. The food displays alone from The Copper Kitchen were a dream to photograph. They had unique and visually stunning displays from Oysters Rockefeller on pink sea salt, pie pops, naked cake and even a full roasted pig. Wicked Willow then accented the space with a wonderful textural palette of monotone flowers that accented the colors of the venue perfectly and the blush lace Badgley Mischka gown worn by the bride.

Butchery 101 + Elegant Dinner Party

My family and I take food very seriously. It’s the main component of each of our gatherings, it’s our mission to unveil the best of the best when travelling, and we do our best to stay on the forefront of any food related event. So it’s no shock that butchery lessons, paired with a fabulous feast, from Make Tribe is totally and completely up my alley. With photos from Lindsay Hite, there’s more right here!

Knife to Table marked MAKE TRIBE’s first Skill Supper — the inaugural event in a new dinner series based on hands-on learning. Butchery brought our guests around the table and into George Marsh’s kitchen at the soon-to-be-opened Parts & Labor in Remington.

Guests were greeted with a “Field Trip” cocktail created by Stephanie Griber of Shoo-Fly Diner, a refreshing and zingy concoction of Millstone Cellars’ Gingerroot cider, organic vodka and blueberry preserves. After some mingling and introductions, attendees were ushered into the kitchen as George began his butchery demo. Guests gathered around the large butcher-block table as half a hog was brought out for examination.

George explained the technique of seam butchery and taught guests the ins and outs of carving, breaking down the hog while he spoke. After a 45-minute lesson, guests moved around the bar for Stephanie’s cocktail demonstration before taking their seats at the 50-foot table.

Petal and Print designed the greenery-filled garland that swept above the table top, and Esther & Harper made our tablescape visions come true by providing the vintage butcher scales and assorted iron weights. An array of white pillars, tapers and tealights, in addition to Petal and Print’s spring-centric floral arrangements, made for a lush, romantic setting.

MAKE TRIBE produced, printed and hand-sewed booklets outlining the butchery process and featuring an exclusive interview with George. Along with a screen-printed menu at each place, each guest also received a personal jar of Pork Rib Rub spices in a Weck jar to take home, and a conversation starter card was sneakily tucked under each place setting. Guests enjoyed a three-course meal complete with beer pairings for each plate.

butchery

In seam butchery, the butcher follows the seams of the muscles and bones of the animal for a more natural, organic cut. Below, a few pro tips on breaking down a hog from George Marsh himself, head butcher at Parts & Labor in Baltimore.

1. Use a boning knife with a curved blade, and handle it like you would a sculpting tool. The curved blade allows for more control while cutting.

2. Focus on using just the tip of the knife. The less blade you use, the smaller the mistakes you’ll make. And, not to mention, the slower you’ll dull your blade.

3. Use a butchery saw as little as possible—only when you really need it, as in when cutting the belly from the loins.

4. Don’t make the mistake of throwing away good stuff. You can use the skin to make pork rinds, grind up the skin, meat and fat to make an emulsified sausage and even use the heads for head cheese or scrapple.

5. It’s key to have a working knowledge of the cuts you can glean from a hog, which has three primal cuts: Shoulder Primal, Belly & Loin Primal and the Leg Primal. The cuts of meat derived from the shoulder primal: shoulder, lardo, copa, bottom blade, butcher’s cut, hock and trotter. The cuts of meat derived from the belly primal: boneless pork chops, pork loin, belly & ribs. The cuts of meat derived from the leg primal: various hams.

Evergreen Museum And Library Wedding

My all-time favorite weddings always land in the “classic” category. The formality and tradition, candlelight and romance get me every time, and thanks to Elle Ellinghaus Designs, I’m adding this beauty to the list. Captured in gorgeous fashion by MPA Productions and Love By Serena, the full gallery and film are two things you pretty-lovers can’t afford to miss!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/79736941 600 338]

From the Bride… From the moment we got engaged, and truth be told even before, I was obsessed with wedding blogs (especially SMP) I would scour them and ooogle at the beautiful weddings. My pinterest boards were so full of wedding ideas that I had people asking me if I gotten had engaged. When it came time to finally plan my real wedding I was sure that it would be a breeze, no sweat!

Well, after looking at more than 30+ venues and not feeling like I had found the right one, my fiance and mother gently suggested that it was time to get some professional help. In the form of a wedding planner. Thankfully, I found Elle Ellinghaus, wedding planner extraordinaire! She saved me from my confusion and helped me make my wedding dreams and pinterest boards a reality! It was priceless to wake up and be totally stress free on our wedding day knowing that it was all in capable hands.

Pat and I knew from the beginning that we wanted a wedding that was as easy as possible for our guests. My family is from the Washington, DC area and Pat’s family is all in the New England area. Making the wedding accessible for those traveling was important to us. We finally settled on an amazing venue in Baltimore, The Evergreen Museum and Library. The large house, the beautiful garden and the cozy carriage house was everything I wanted in a venue. Growing up riding horses I loved that I got to have a little bit of horsie-ness in my wedding. The carriage house had the old beautiful stalls and our escort cards were tied to horse shoes that my mom and I had spray painted gold.

I also searched long and hard for the right photographer. Serena and Chad are so sweet, wonderful to work with, and as you can see, talented! I was so happy we decided to go with a first look before the ceremony. When I first I told my Mom that we were doing a first look, she was horrified and could not believe that we were going to see each other before the ceremony. It was with out a doubt one of the best decisions we made, just ask my mom, she is now the number one advocate for first looks! I love the photos that we got from it, and it was so special to have a moment just for the two of us. Seeing each other was such a relief and I was so excited to finally show him my dress! Being able to attend our cocktail hour was important to us, we wanted to squeeze out every possible ounce of time and fun with our guests!

We danced the night away at the reception to our amazing band Black Tie. There are no words to describe how amazing it is to have your closest family and friends all in the same place to celebrate your love! It made all the difficult decisions, planning and stressing before worth every second of it. We would do it all over again a million times.

Baltimore Wedding from Renee Michele + Elizabeth Bailey Weddings & Events

A few weeks ago, I got the sweetest email from a groom turned fantastic husband requesting that I take a look at his wedding pictures. And if I liked them, could they pretty please go up on the blog December 5th for his beautiful wife’s birthday? Well, that just about won my heart, but then I laid eyes on the stunning day, planned by the bride + Elizabeth Bailey Weddings & Events. Renee Michele’s images stole my heart and then some. Happy birthday Lauren!

From the groom… My beautiful, sweet and kind hearted wife Lauren’s birthday is on December 5th, and I thought it would be a great way to show her how much our wedding day meant to me, and also surprise her on December 5th with a Real Wedding submitted by me. I know Style Me Pretty well because this was Lauren’s go to for ideas.

Here’s some information about our wedding that was July 6, 2013. Lauren is from Baltimore, Maryland and I am from Vicksburg, Mississippi. We met through mutual friends while both living in Washington, D.C. after college, and then moved to Denver, Colorado together. It was important to Lauren and her family that we get married where she’s from. I was the typical groom, and sat back and let Lauren and her mom do their thing. I knew I was marrying the woman of my dreams, but Lauren went above and beyond incorporating southern touches in our wedding to make me and my family feel not so far from home. On July 4th we greeted my friends and family with a crab feast, our rehearsal dinner the next night had Ole Miss (where I went to school) decorations, and we had a raw oyster bar. At the wedding, the groomsmen and I had cotton boutonnieres, there was cotton and spanish moss in our centerpieces, the cocktail hour had mint juleps as our signature drink in pewter mint julep cups, miniature tomato sandwiches- a staple in the south, shrimp and grits, guest gift bags with an equal number Maryland snacks to Mississippi ones, and at the end of the night our late night snacks were skewers with chicken and waffles and syrup.

We love the outdoors, so it was important to us that we were married outside. We had a sunny day, but it was about 100 degrees at 5pm. The ceremony location had trees all around and was perfect despite the heat. Lauren had a creative idea to incorporate something else that is important to us, music. Our fan programs had a schedule of the evening and Lauren asked me to help her pick song lyrics from songs we love as titles for each part of the evening (example: “My Sweet one, I’ll call you my sweet one – Half past five, wedding vows in the garden” ; “How Sweet it Is to be love by you- Half past nine: cutting of the cake”). We had a string quartet that played modern music, during the ceremony examples: “In my life,” by The Beatles, and a few others and Lauren walked down the aisle to “Stand by Me,”by Ben E King and then after we were married we walked down the aisle to “Happy Together,” by The Turtles.

We decided to move our cocktail hour inside though since it was so hot. After the cocktail hour, we had a seated dinner. Our wedding planner and florist had the idea to flip the two rooms at the Baltimore Country Club. One is usually used for dining, and it has a much more formal look. The other room across the way is usually for dancing. Because our taste is a little more laid back and rustic, the mostly wood room was used for dinner. We were told by many guests that the whole evening felt just like Lauren and Michael, and the decorations looked like us. Lauren surprised me with a record player grooms cake and a lyric from one of my favorite bands the Beatles.

After dinner, the dance floor was hoppin! We had a 10 piece band with a few horns and they played a lot of songs that are special to us.

I love Lauren for so many reasons, but her selflessness won me over! It was obviously a special day for her, but she made sure the day wasn’t just about her. I cried during our first look because I felt so lucky that moment. Later during our wedding night as I watched Lauren speak with guests and laugh, I was blown away by her grace. Lauren was so laid back throughout the whole process, and I know she was really thankful for her mom’s amount of work and the awesome people that worked with us. Every detail was great, and our night was perfect. It was great receiving so many compliments about the night, but the greatest thing we were told was that everyone could feel the love– that will stay with us forever.

From the Bride…I moved to Baltimore from Delaware where I grew up shortly after college and was introduced to Eric at a Ravens football game tailgate. We felt an instant connection and went on our first date the week after and have been together ever since. Eric proposed in the Fall of 2012 and after being together for 6 years, we decided to have a quick engagement. I am a teacher as well, so a summer wedding was ideal so I could be on summer vacation to deal with last minute wedding preparation and also for a two week Italian honeymoon.

We both loved the movie “Meet Joe Black” and fantasized about having a wedding just like the elegant mansion affair in the movie held outside with rolling green hills and lights illuminating the night sky (or maybe it was just meJ) It turned out to be easier to find than expected because as soon as we visited the Evergreen Museum in Baltimore, we knew we had found the perfect place for our mansion wedding. The stately white columns of the mansion made it the perfect backdrop for our back lawn outdoor wedding and cocktail hour as well as the tented carriage house for our reception.

Once the location and summer date was finalized, I chose a romantic, soft garden party aesthetic for our blush, grey and white wedding. For the ceremony, I had tan wooden chairs and cream market umbrellas set up on the Evergreen lawn to provide shade for guests in the July heat and accented the chairs with white babies breath and blush ribbon. The fountain was the focal point for the ceremony and was flanked on each side by white hydrangeas. A string quartet provided pre ceremony music to set a serene tone. After the ceremony, we tented the brick patio for cocktail hour to provide shade for guests and served strawberry basil spritzers and mint juleps to help beat the heat. Inside the carriage house, I chose grey linens and tall babies breath vases and blooms in white, blush and dusty purple to continue the soft color palette. We dined on strawberry spinach and gorgonzola summer salad, porcini crusted sea bass and steak au poivre, and enjoyed an assortment of cupcakes from the dessert bar. Guests enjoyed getting silly with the photobooth and props and everyone danced late into the night while listening to Motown and top 40 hits. Our wedding was exactly what we wanted and truly was the “Meet Joe Black” wedding of our dreams.

Baltimore Wedding from Dani Leigh Photography + Romance of Flowers

Try as I may, there is no way I could keep this wedding short. It’s sweet… oh it’s beautifully sweet, but I couldn’t risk you not visiting the beautiful gallery from Dani Leigh Photography, so I tried to pack as many stunning shots as I could into this post. But please, don’t let that stop you from visiting the gallery! It’s filled to the brim with beautiful blooms from Romance of Flowers, lovely ‘maids all in a row, and a couple so beautiful you won’t be able to tear yourself away.

From the stunning bride… The best part of planning a long distance wedding is truly trusting in those that are there to make your day special. James and I were so lucky to have amazing individuals there with us from our wonderful parents, to our amazing florist: Victoria, our new friend and photographer: Dani and our unbelievably talented band: Bachelor Boys Band.

I have always been a homebody, and my parents never thought I would last when I decided to venture to college in Madison, Wisconsin from Baltimore; to their surprise I happily endured my four years. James, a Madison local, and I met in the spring of 2007 and knew from the start there was something different about our relationship. It was not until the following fall, with some fairly obvious coaxing on my part, that James relented and asked me on a date; from that moment forward, we have rarely been apart. Our relationship has survived through five moves in Illinois and a cross country move to California, because of the calm that James brings to our lives and support from our friends and family.

James proposed on the beach in Half Moon Bay, California and we immediately realized that while difficult, a traditional hometown wedding was what we desired. With that decision, we began a whirlwind of living long distance for seven months, wedding planning, and starting our lives in California complete with purchasing our first home and beginning new jobs.

Every aspect of our wedding was beyond our wildest dreams. My Mom handmade table numbers, runner for the head table and painted picture frames, while my Dad made the place cards and made sure the timeline was perfected, even providing small laminated cards for those who wanted them on the day of.

James and I have been to numerous weddings, but still had no concept of the organization required to plan a wedding without a formal wedding planner. Many of our big choices were simple, our venue choice: Evergreen Museum and Library was a place I drove by on my way to school growing up, Victoria Clausen is an amazing floral designer who I was lucky enough to help at weddings and my mother still works for. We chose Dani Leigh Photography for her beautiful lighting and wonderful personality. From the beginning I knew I wanted blush pinks and navy blues. In my meetings with Victoria I provided her the colors that I did not want, but completely trusted how she, along with my mother and our family friend and photographer for Victoria, Kakki Morrison, would oversee and complete the wedding look. Evergreen is a beautiful place that deserves to be enhanced rather than overtaken, so we worked with our venue, the beautiful brick walls and wooden carriage house. Many of the aspects of the wedding were chosen for their small price tag but big impact: the wooden farm table for the head table, the unique table cloths for cocktails, dinner and dancing, the lights above the dance floor and the paper flower balls providing a backdrop for the band.

From start to finish we had so much support and so much faith in everyone that was with us on that day or provided us with beautiful memories. I have heard that, when the wedding is over, some brides are sad. While I could be distracted from feeling sad by a 10 week old puppy, James and I prefer to have the memory of our wedding and love to reflect on how special the day was and how lucky we are to have had such a perfectly flawless wedding.

From the Bride…When reflecting on the entire day, and all of the events that lead up to this fantastic culmination, I am so happy and thankful to say that the most beautiful memory I hold is of our ceremony and the vows we made to each other. Choosing to write our own vows was a choice that I will never stop being thankful that we made. My husband’s vows were breathtaking and full of undeniable love, and I have replayed them in my mind a hundred times over. Adam summed it up beautifully and succinctly just after the ceremony ended, saying to me, “That was the best thing I have ever done”.

One of the most gratifying decisions we made was asking Adam’s father to officiate our ceremony. He surprised us by asking all of our parents to contribute in writing the service; their words were heartfelt, moving and deeply personal, leaving very few dry eyes in attendance. During the ceremony, he allowed us to take a quiet moment to turn and face our guests, and feel all of the love surrounding us in this monumental moment. We will never forget that feeling, and will cherish that memory forever.

Walking in to our venue, I was overwhelmed with happiness as I saw the seemingly endless details I had planned so carefully come to fruition. As an insufferable perfectionist, I found it impossible to delegate even the smallest tasks to friends and family; every second of effort was worth it in the end. The flowers and decor were more stunning than I had ever dreamt they would be, and the result was breathtaking. I was overwhelmed with how beautiful and handsome our wedding party looked; seeing the suits and romantic, summery bridesmaid dresses in shades of my favorite color come to fruition was beyond exciting.

Some of my fondest memories of our day were courtesy of the wonderful loved ones that shared it with us. I have never seen a group of people from many different walks of life have more fun together, laugh or dance as harder, or exude as much love as our guests. Many guests exclaimed that it was the most fun party they had ever attended, and that was everything Adam and I could have hoped for in the end.

Baltimore Maryland Wedding from ReadyLuck

We’ve seen weddings in some really unique places over the years. We continue to be amazed by the creativity of couples that discover such unexpected locations… and more importantly have the vision to see the potential for romance. Parking garages. Campgrounds. A metal and woodworking studio… Why not? Especially when the result is this good. Captured by storytellers extraordinaire, Readyluck we’re kicking things off this morning with a serious dose of East Coast cool. Industrial chic is the new black my friends and you can see even more right here in the gallery.

From the Bride… Rob and I were engaged in January, bought a new house in March, sold the old one in July, moved and began renovations in August, and were married in October. 2012 was a YEAR.

Because our lives were so hectic, our goal was to keep wedding planning as simple as possible. That became laughingly impossible as we realized how much actually goes into a wedding. As plans spiraled forward, our goal morphed pathetically into just not throwing in the towel and eloping. At the time, I was writing about weddings for the Baltimore Sun, and I still credit needing material for my posts as the reason we made it to the wedding.

Our wedding was at Gutierrez Studio in Baltimore, which used to be a foundry, and is now a working metal and wood shop. We’d been to the studio several times before and had always toyed with the idea of getting married there. A good friend of ours works at Gutierrez, and was instrumental in realizing our dream that the space could be both industrial and romantic. He floated gauzy white material and lights from the rafters which instantly created an intimate space. We chose soft pink linens and simple succulents from Ikea for our bistro tables (there were no assigned seats) to give a warm, earthy feel.

The ceremony itself was held outside. To cut costs, we only set up seating for our immediate family- everyone else stood. To keep them happy we served Natty Boh (Baltimore’s signature swill) from buckets and kept the ceremony short. Our groomsmen wore grey suits and suspenders, and the bridesmaids picked whatever dresses they wanted in shades from off-white to light pink. I cannot stand too much matching, and giving them (mostly) free reign cut down on the stress of finding one magical dress that fit the bodies, styles, and budgets of the five women in my party. Best of all, most have actually re-worn their dresses, which I’ve always thought was a bridal urban myth.

After the ceremony, we all filed inside and feasted on both passed hors d’oeuvres, and later, a buffet. Our menu was eclectic and, thanks to our incredible caterer, delicious. The bistro table set-up was a success, as it saved us a lot of money, and also forced people to mingle. Many of our disparate friends and family finally got to know each other, which likely wouldn’t have happened had they been seated with people they already knew.

Our friend Adam DJ-ed for us, and most of the evening was spent on the dance floor. If you’re ever worried about people not dancing at a wedding, may I suggest inviting or borrowing a child? My nine year old brother is undoubtedly the best dancer in our family, and though there’s not a person in my life who won’t dance (wildly) in public, his enthusiasm added to ours. He also fueled some of the more memorable dance-offs, and absolutely left the floor reigning champion.

The night ended with all of our friends piling into cabs and meeting us at The Hippo- one of the gay bars in our beloved Mount Vernon neighborhood. Rob and I chose to donate to Question 6 (Maryland’s marriage equality bill) instead of handing out favors. Our wedding was exactly one month before the question was up for vote, and we hoped our contribution showed solidarity with our friends who (at that point) were not able to legally marry. I’m so happy and proud to say that in our state, equality prevailed, and no first month anniversary gift could top its passing.

I knew I would never be a bride who claimed her wedding was the best night of her life, but I will say it was one of the most fun. Everyone we know and love came out to celebrate with us, dance with us, and score a free meal and buzz from us. We’re forever grateful for all the help we had from our families and friends, and for the unbelievable service and kindness provided by our vendors.

Maryland DIY Wedding from Sarah Culver Photography

I’ll admit it.  I am a wedding crier.  Yep, it’s true… drop-dead gorgeous florals, beautiful locations, sweet, sweet love stories – give me a wedding to swoon over and I’ll cry every.single.time.  So, when I first laid my eyes on this stunning Maryland soiree, I was MORE than prepared to shed a few tears.  But, when I landed on the breathtaking First Look, well.  I cried like never before.  Because this is a moment that is so completely full of emotion, it’s impossible NOT to fall head over heels.  And the rest of this glorious day captured ever-so perfectly by Sarah Culver Photography?  Simply amazing. See it all here.

From the Bride… When I approached the planning of our wedding, I knew I didn’t want to have “colors” or a strict theme to adhere to, but I wanted to tie in elements that were summery, warm and a mixture of all of my favorite things. At the time, if you had looked at my closet, you would have found a plethora of creamy pink and warm white items, and with my love of all things rustic and unfinished, I had a direction for our day. We found our venue the day before we got engaged when we were invited to model for a styled shoot for a local wedding blog. I instantly fell in love with the high ceilings and stone walls, and I knew the rolling hills would be a beautiful backdrop for a wedding.

So much of this wedding was a labor of love! All of the details were either made by me or my sister (and Aaron too!), while all of the vases were collected months prior to the wedding by various family members. The most time consuming part was that Aaron and I designed all of the paper goods for the day (including the invitations, programs, menus, name cards and guest book). We got inspired in our design from shops on Etsy and invitations on Pinterest. Although it was stressful to design, cut and paste all of our invitations, it was worth it when we saw the result. The way I kept positive throughout the process was reminding myself that these were my WEDDING invitations. It was so amazing to me that I was doing this so I could get MARRIED. That alone was the most encouraging part of our wedding planning for me. Another important aspect for us was good food. We got married on a working farm and got to custom-design our menu with the chef. My favorite part was the macaroni and cheese bar with three different types offered. Also, some of the produce for the meal was picked from the farm that day! I made sure to take time to eat the food, and I absolutely loved it. I wasn’t anticipating to have much of an appetite, but it turned out that it was Aaron who didn’t feel hungry. I practically cleared my plate it was so good!

My absolute favorite part of the day was walking down the aisle. The emotions I felt in that moment will probably never be replicated as I held my dad’s arm and walked into the arms of my groom. Aaron looked like he was going to burst out of his skin as I approached. We had already seen each other during a first look and pre-ceremony portraits, but it didn’t lessen that moment at all. That will always be such a sweet memory for me.

Chesapeake Bay Beach Club Wedding from Kimberly Brooke Photography

If you’re craving a summer vaca on the water with a gorgeous view, this Chesapeake Bay Beach Club soiree could not have come at a better time. It’s the perfect midweek refresher to keep you going until your weekend, and we haven’t even discussed the best part yet. The wedding at center. Captured by Kimberly Brooke Photography, it is stunning and refreshing, with love, laughter, and joy radiating from every smile. And, if you can believe it, there is even more here!

Ryan and I were introduced to each other by a mutual friend in the Spring of 2006 while visiting the Delaware Beaches.  At the time, Ryan was living in Delaware and I was living in Chicago but job opportunities fatefully allowed us to both move to central Maryland later that summer and we quickly reconnected. We fell in love and it’s been happy days ever since.

Ryan proposed on Valentines Day in 2010. We immediately began planning for what would eventually be the most perfect, magical, fun, exciting and beautiful day of our lives.

We saw many beautiful places when trying to choose our venue, but the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club was our favorite.  It is located right on the Chesapeake Bay and has beautiful views of the water and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.  Ryan and I both love the beach and being outdoors, and at the Chesapeake Bay Beach Club we could be married in a location that was reminiscent of the beach where we first met.  Recently renovated, the rooftop deck of their Sunset Ballroom allowed us to say “I do” outside under large, modern royal blue umbrellas with blue skies in the background.  It was simple and perfect.

At the reception, wall to wall bay windows allowed our guests to not only see the gorgeous sunset on the water, but to experience it as the atmosphere changed from a semi formal meal to dancing as night fell.

Our day was perfect because we were surrounded by all the love and excitement from our friends and family, it was a beautiful day at the perfect venue, and I got to marry my best friend. Ryan and I wouldn’t change a thing!

Baltimore Wedding at the Evergreen Museum & Library by Kate Headley Photography

One thing that never, ever goes out of style is elegance. Pure and Simple. And Ritzy Bee Events knows how to craft that understated beauty and make it shine throughout an affair. It’s the type of wedding that would get the Jackie O style stamp of approval with layers of florals by Holly Heider Chapple Flowers so gorgeous they belong in a royal wedding and a real life, way too pretty to eat Maggie Austin Cake. Now add friends and family that know how to enjoy the heck out of a cocktail hour and this elegant Baltimore wedding has been skyrocketed to a whole new level of cool. Kate Headley Photography snapped everything from those beautiful lace runners right on through to the clinking of glasses. It’s a cheersy bunch and we whole heartedly adore it. See it all here.

From the Bride… We met in Washington, DC through mutual friends. We started dating in January 2007 and got engaged in July 2009 after Rob’s first year of law school, but we wanted to wait until he graduated for the wedding. The long engagement worked out well because our life was pretty hectic. I moved out to Iowa with Rob for his second and third years of law school. After his graduation, during the four-month period before our wedding, we moved back to DC, Rob studied for and took the Virginia Bar Exam, we both applied for and were thankfully offered jobs and finalized the details of the wedding. But we survived! A big thanks goes to our wedding planners, Maria and Kelly of Ritzy Bee Events for keeping a handle on everything!

Since we were living in the Midwest during our wedding planning time, we would take periodic trips back to the east coast for marathon wedding planning appointments. I got my gown about a year prior to our wedding date during one of those wild trips. I have to preface this by saying that I absolutely loved my gown and the shop where I got it (Hitched in DC) was wonderful. But to me, the dress was just something I was going to wear; it was just an article of clothing. I felt weird that I wasn’t one of those girls who cry or have this huge moment, but I really just cared about marrying my best friend. To me, that was the most important thing. The only jewelry I wore (besides my engagement ring) were my earrings, which were my “something borrowed” from my mom. When my mom and dad got married, they didn’t have much money and my mom couldn’t afford to purchase a wedding gown, so she borrowed one. She did however buy her veil, and she kept it preserved for thirty years. That veil had one of those early ’80s-inspired hats, so I removed that, had it fastened to a comb and wore it on my wedding day as my “something old.” My veil was my favorite part of my ensemble. Also, in lieu of doing a bouquet toss, I surprised my mom by giving her my bouquet in honor of my parents’ wedding anniversary (which was the day after ours).

Our venue really fits our taste — classic, elegant, and simple. Our wedding programs were calligraphed with each guest’s name and doubled as an escort card. (A little card with the table assignment was inside a small envelope on the inside of the program.) We hoped these could be saved as a little keepsake. Rob enjoys cigars occasionally, so cigars were passed out during cocktail hour. In terms of décor, we tried to stay with things that were classic and avoid anything that was too trendy.

Baltimore Country Club Wedding from David Mielcarek + Romance of Flowers

As a huge fan of the best wedding movie ever (Father of the Bride, as if you even need to ask) I always love a hometown wedding. When two people come home to shower their childhood haunts with hugs, kisses, bridesmaids, bouquets, and centerpieces, the butterflies are always soaring. Especially when those bouquets and centerpieces are from a team so lovely, like Romance of Flowers. David Mielcarek understands the undeniable draw of the hometown wedding, which is why he’s gone and captured ALL the details so wonderfully!

Will and I, both born and raised less than a one mile apart in Baltimore, didn’t actually meet until high school. At first we were just friends, but the summer after my freshman year at Stanford (and before his first year at Yale), we embarked on a summer romance that turned into two and a half years years of really long distance (California to Connecticut), one year of semi-long distance (New York to Connecticut) and finally three wonderful years a mere 10 city blocks apart in Manhattan.

You might be wondering, and trust me, many people asked, how did you do it?! My answer to this question was always that while dating long distance was incredibly hard, life without Will in it at all would be much much worse. After three and a half years of long distance, we were ecstatic to be both be living in Manhattan. On New Years Eve 2009, upon returning home from a friend’s party, Will made it official as he got down on one knee while our song played in the background (David Lee Murphy’s “Inspiration”). We danced our first dance together as husband and wife to that very same song almost 11 months later.

Having our wedding in our home town of Baltimore was a no brainer. Our parents live less than a mile apart from one another and we both had fond childhood memories growing up in the lovely neighborhood of Roland Park. Although I grew up playing sports and was a Division I athlete in college, I have always been a girly girly. As a child, every Halloween I had to be a princess and in kindergarden I was convinced that if I didn’t wear dresses everyday that the boys wouldn’t play with me. Therefore, it is no surprise that I wanted my wedding to be a fairytale, albeit a grown up and chic rendition of one. And what better place in Baltimore for a dream wedding than the Baltimore Country Club? The Club is elegant in an old world kind of way and many of my fondest childhood memories took place within its walls.

Of all of my wedding decisions, picking the florist was the easiest decision of them all (well after the groom I suppose). My mother has worked with Victoria Clausen of Romance of Flowers for years, so I was already very familiar with her unbelievable creativity and uncanny ability to cater her designs to the unique styles of her brides. Victoria understands the ambiance you want to create, and then takes it to a whole new level. Since I have attended countless events and dinners at BCC, I wanted to enhance the timeless beauty of the club, but at the same time transform it into something very different. In essence, I wanted to combine the best parts of my childhood home with some newer elements of my life with Will in Manhattan. For the color palette I wanted to stick mostly to white, with pops of pink and green to tie in the girl’s bridesmaids dresses and bouquets. Even though I had high expectations, the end result was beyond my wildest dreams. Victoria transformed the club into an absolute wonderland.

I would be absolutely remiss if I didn’t also thank my mom! Without her, the day would not have been as exquisite and personal as it was. Many of my favorite touches were the details she stayed up nights laboring over; the emblem on the invitation that she designed and effortlessly wove throughout the entire weekend, the scalloped bottom layer of our wedding cake, the magenta felt panels hung in the porch to echo the Tord Boontje paper used to cover the lamp shades, and the K&W logo shining down on the foyer – setting the stage for a wedding that was so obviously planned and designed with love. These little details are what made the wedding and I have her to thank for those.

David Melcarek did an absolutely amazing job with the photography; capturing both the sweet and tender moments as well as the hilarious and ridiculous ones. Debbie Federico and Dean Krapf worked wonders on my make up and hair, and Mia at Garnish boutique was a delight to work with in picking out and ordering the bridesmaids dresses.

As I wrote on the chalkboard in my parent’s kitchen that night, as we quickly changed from our wedding attire before taking off for Vietnam, it truly was “the best day ever.”
