Classic Southern Wedding With Non-Stop Smiles

A classic at home Southern wedding just can’t be beat and when the Bride and Groom can’t stop smiling like these two? Well, it doesn’t get much better than this and we’re loving every moment. Kristin Sweeting captured them all for us to soak up so if you need a little pick-me-up, head to our Vault gallery pronto! You will not be disappointed!

From the Bride… It is difficult for me to pick out a favorite part of the day – everything truly was magical for me – but if I had to distill it down to two favorite memories I would choose the Second Line from the church to the reception and sitting down to dinner. The Second Line was an absolute blast – we loved getting to walk out of the church as husband and wife, get to congregate with our wedding party and parents, and take the moment to just be excited together. When the band started up and started marching, it was fun to see the eyes of our surprised guests and get to get in the party spirit. I’ll never forget how big the smiles were or how gleeful I was during that walk – all I saw was Ross as we got to lead the church of our people to the reception!

Sitting down to dinner was a personal favorite moment because it offered the opportunity to get to take a moment to look around and soak in the wedding.Throughout the planning of the wedding, I had my heart set of being able to assign our guests to tables and have everyone sit down for dinner. Ross and I both grew up in families where getting together for dinner was a special time to reconnect and enjoy each other. My vision was that dinner during our wedding would feel like a giant dinner party where we could introduce our families and friends and continue to build our community. Since we grew up in different cities and went to different colleges, Ross and I had many friends who had never met, so we were excited to get to see people form new friendships. When Ross and I sat down for dinner at the head banquet table, it was a joy to look across the yard and see our friends and family laughing over a glass of wine or deep in conversation over their plates.

This sounds like a bit of a contradiction, but we wanted the wedding to feel formal and comfortable at the same time and, ultimately, we wanted the wedding to glorify God and celebrate the wonderful community that Ross and I have been blessed with. Our faith is very important to Ross and I, so we were very intentional about making sure that the ceremony was not just a celebration of us, but celebration of God – whether it be from having a string quartet play hymns as our guests were seated or special scriptural readings, we did not want the sole focus to be on us.

In terms of the reception, we wanted the wedding to be a joyful, fun, and traditional celebration filled with Motown music, cocktails, tasty food, and some surprises. My favorite parties make you feel like you are welcome when you show up dressed to the nines and when you’ve kicked your heels off for the night. Something that I consider sacred is sitting down to dinner with those that I love – Ross and I constantly host people at our home for dinner, brunch, or just a glass of wine and we wanted everyone to feel the magic of a good meal with good friends. Since the wedding was outside at my parent’s home, we tried to utilize the variety of spaces to spread out the parts and make every stage (cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing) seem special. We had seating areas and bars (and a bourbon bar!) spread throughout these areas, so that guests could feel comfortable if they were dancing or chatting or enjoying each other.

We felt so joyful and loved the whole day and wanted our people to feel that way as well!

Southern “Great Gatsby” Style Wedding

What do you get when you bring the glamour of “Great Gatsby” to Orange Beach, Alabama? You get this gorgeous wedding photographed by Christian Oth Studio. With no shortage of great fashion moments and a puppy that’ll make you squeal, there’s more than enough reason to head straight to The Vault.

What did you envision your wedding being prior to planning?

I wanted Great Gatsby meets the South while playing Zydeco. Palmer was born in Natchez Mississippi and I was born in Monroe, Louisiana but raised in Baton Rouge while calling Lafayette home so there’s a lot of culture in that mix!

What was your color palette and your style vision?

I used different shades of blue but really just used the nature and natural surroundings of the water and trees. We have been incredibly lucky to have an amazing florist and caterer that I’ve known since I was 5 that I call family and they knew every vision and made it come alive.

What unique elements or DIY details did you include?

We designed and put together all of ours save the dates with 4 coasters that had the date, our initials, his favorite drink, and my favorite drink as well as Jack Daniels and Maccalen Scotch and stirrers with our initials on them.

What was your favorite moment? Your favorite crafted detail?

I absolutely loved our go away on the boat with fireworks going off the background but if I had to say my most favorite it would have to be the actual ceremony. Everyone told me to keep my pup locked up for the ceremony but as I was leaving my bedroom I decided to let him out and he was the perfect addition while we were saying our vows. He definitely thought the entire wedding was for him.

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

One of my bridesmaids and dearest friends made her famous chocolate fudge and caramel. My sister also had linen bags made with our initials that people put lavender into throw as we left. Our cake was absolutely stunning! My gown was the perfect amount of glam without being too over the top for a beach wedding. The flowers and food were insanely elegant and still made you feel like you weren’t in a home that had been recreated and redone for the event but that you were in a home that was loved and filled with deliciousness and fab floral arrangements. As the night went on we had tambourines that lit up that ended up being a huge hit.

What is one piece of advice that you could give brides-to-be?

Have a wedding planner! I am a control freak which I never realized until planning a wedding and she made sure that things that went wrong weren’t things I would ever ever ever know about. EVER. Also, enjoy it when it comes because it happens fast.

I hope you feel it as you glance through these images. From the Bride… We felt it was important that the vibe reflect who we are, and emulate the most sincere expression of our love. We decided on a style that we would describe as “comfortable elegance”–something that I think our vendors really perfected. We were married on October 17, 2015, at Sacred Heart Chapel, a historic 19th- century chapel on the bluff of Mobile Bay. The reception followed at my parent’s home, also along the bay. We wanted our guests to enjoy themselves in the most sincere, natural setting – our backyard. It was important to us to include these special nods to our lives (like my childhood home, nontraditional wedding music, exiting by boat, and many other personal touches. We were adamant that our wedding should not only celebrate our lives together, but the things that created us into the person that each other fell in love with.

Little did I know I would marry a man

From The Bride…As a child, my father made sure that our family of 4 attended every single at home Auburn football game. We sat in section 42 and cheered on our Auburn Tigers for over 10 years together. Little did I know as a child, sitting beside the first man I loved the most, that the man I would marry would be a man that years down would be a player on that football field.

Andrew and I met at an Auburn vs LSU football game in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Our friends introduced us not really expecting that we would hit it off immediately…but we did! We spent the next 8 years together very happily until tragedy and sadness struck both of our families.

On December 9th, 2014 our beautiful niece was born very healthy and a huge head full of black hair. Soon after, my sister suffered from an Amniotic Fluid Embolism that eventually took her life on March 24th, 2015. I write that as part of my love story because without the love and support of my husband I would be one lost soul. He loved me before then, loved me during when I was at my lowest, and loves me now. And I know that.

We were engaged on June 12th, 2015 in his hometown of Hinsdale, IL. He asked me to marry him under a dogwood tree that shadowed over his parents patio. He started his proposal by telling me how he and his father had planted that tree when he was a young boy and how was amazed how much it had grown. I realized this was a symbol of what we would be…and in some ways already were.

When I first began the process of planning our wedding, I knew I wanted a natural elegant wedding surrounded by the cathedral of God given nature. We were married on April 9th at Springhouse in my small hometown of Alabama made famous my beautiful Lake Martin. My heart and soul. Our day was filled with people we love, overflowing ranunculus, weather better that I could have even imagined.

The one thing I have to say about our special day is that I would do it all over again and in the exact same way. Obviously, there were chairs there that I would have liked to have been filled and a spot of green lawn specifically marked for my sister to stand beside me. On the other side of me, however, I had a man that dedicated his life to our marriage and our life together. In my eyes, he has been my husband since I met him.
