Michigan Surprise Beach Proposal

This beautiful gallery really needs no introduction. A surprise proposal, with an adoring groom-to-be and his gorgeous love. Photographs that will make you tear up by the incredible Tiffaney Childs. And a sense of magic that just leaps right off the page.

From the photographer… When David contacted me about photographing his surprise proposal to Kier, he was so nervous and excited as we talked over the timeline. Kier had no clue what had been planned for months prior to her seemingly innocent girls day out with her sister and girlfriends to a local winery.

David made all the signs, had Kier’s talented sister paint the meaningful lyrics on them, and set them up a path on the beach for Kier to follow when she arrived with the girls. The sun had been behind the clouds all day, and it was a bit chilly, but when Kier found that first sign on the path, the sun peeked out and seemed to shine for the two of them.

It was so emotional watching them both absorb the shock of this perfect upcoming moment. David got down on one knee while Kier wiped away tears of joy and instantly said yes. The excited laughter and kissing that followed was a joy to watch.

Kier’s sister and friends watched from a sandhill and ran down to congratulate and hug them. We quickly headed down towards the water to take some beautiful photos of the two of them while they were both still reeling with glee. Her sister and friends had brought some cute decorated glasses for a quick toast to them on the beach. The sun set over the water as they cuddled and giggled to themselves about getting married.

This was one of the most perfect proposals I have ever had the privilege of capturing.

A ‘Garden Party’ Bridal Shower With Shades of Lavender

Hello, SMP readers! I’m so excited to be here sharing my sweet garden bridal shower planned by my maid of honor Ashley Slater, one of my bridesmaids, and a sweet friend, Rhiannon of Hey Gorgeous Events. They designed a stunning celebration all around my love of the color lavender. From gorgeous linens, blooms, and sweet personal touches throughout, I couldn’t have asked for a better day. Take a peek and grab some garden party inspiration for yourself!

The Fun

From Rhiannon of Hey Gorgeous Events… >Michaela has such a romantic and feminine style so incorporating those attributes into her shower was a must! Also, as a long-time friend of Michaela’s I know she loves the color lavender and is including that at the wedding so I made sure to bring in lavender with the linens and vintage glassware. I then balanced all of that lavender with some soft pinks and other muted colors like ivory, blush and pink seen throughout the centerpieces and vintage plates. The gold flatware and gold framed signs with fun details about M and her fiance McCann were the pretty final details making up the tablescapes! It was a beautiful summer day for an even more beautiful bride to be!

From Ashley Slater Photography (maid of honor)…I was so thrilled to be able to throw Michaela a bridal shower in the gorgeous gardens of Aquinas campus. I knew I wanted it to be reflective of her wedding day color palette and once I found the invitation on Minted, I used it to build the rest of the day. I had the greatest help in Rhiannon, from Hey Gorgeous Events, who helped choose linens, dishes and really bring Michaela’s feminine style to life! We used signage from the same calligrapher Michaela had hired for her wedding and the watercolor floral elements were used throughout the setup. Of course, as beautiful as it was, the best part was sharing in such a special day, watching Michaela open gifts under a beautiful weeping willow and eating lots of delicious food! It was such a sweet day and great representation of the perfect Michigan summer afternoon!

Blogger Bride
Americana-Style Michigan Wedding by the Water

We might be headed into the cold months of winter, but that doesn’t mean we can’t dream of summer days spent on the water. In fact, that was exactly the idea behind Maryal and Chris’ wedding – who you might recognize are the bloggers behind Love and Specs – that played out as a small town, Americana-style celebration in Petoskey, Michigan. Pop to the gallery shot by Ashley Slater and don’t miss a look back at their desert chic engagement.

From planner Sarah Rhodes Boyce with Sincerely, Ginger Weddings… When I first spoke with Maryal, I knew I hit the bridal client jackpot! She’s enthusiastic, witty, smart, stylish and a little spitfire! This made planning with her and her lovely mother, Anna, all the better. After understanding Maryal’s vision for her big day, I couldn’t wait to get started!

At the very beginning of our planning together, she had some great ideas, but most importantly she was excited to show off her favorite place in the world to her family and friends: Walloon Lake in Petoskey, Michigan, the place where her family has had a home for almost 40 years and that filled her life with years of happy memories. Several of Maryal’s ideas and inspiration were derived from Petoskey, for it’s small town flair with local shops overflowing with cherry pie, fudge, local art and old-school soda pop – it all fit into her vision of a classic Americana wedding. With that vibe in mind, we went with a palette of soft white, blush, cherry lipstick red and royal blue.

The invitation suite really set the stage for for the theme the couple had chosen. The bride and graphic designer Ayofemi Creative Studio (who also happens to be Maryal’s friend) worked together to create a beautiful cherry-adorned, red, white and blue vintage-esque suite with watercolor details and blue gingham ribbon to tie it all together. The envelopes were addressed in red and blue watercolor by the insanely talented Michigan-based Sable & Gray to give guests a peek of what was to come.

The guys and gals in the bridal party chose their own suits and dresses with two rules in mind: stick with the color palette and have fun with it! To be completely honest? I wasn’t so sure it could be pulled off, but as you see in Ashley Slater’s photographs, everything was so classically perfect. Both parties got ready at the gorgeous Hotel Walloon right on Walloon Lake. Maryal went with a vintage wave for her hair and that iconic red lipstick we all wish we could pull off! And her shoes? Suede Carolina Herrera pumps in the same hue of red, of course. Her dress was a two-piece Monique Lhuillier stunner that incorporated a hint of blush in the skirt. Chris looked dapper as ever in a navy check Hugo Boss suit and a perfect chambray bowtie to top it off (that happened to match their dog Hamlet’s bowtie). They looked amazing.

After 8 months of planning together, the vision came together perfectly, the timeline was set, and Maryal and her fiancé Chris were more than ready to get married. We were all ready to pull off an amazing party. However, on August 20th the forecast was feeling a little less enthusiastic. We were looking at a 100% chance of rain for the entire day. Luckily, the bride and groom, their awesome bridal party and their amazing photographers walked into the day with a positive attitude.

We were lucky enough to get their first look outside when as the rain broke for 30 minutes, and my goodness are we ever thankful for that. The pictures were beyond perfect. From there, photos were taken inside and on the porch at the Hotel Walloon. Luckily, the interior designer and Maryal had a similar sense of style! Every detail in that hotel is incredible.

The ceremony took place at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Petoskey with Chris’s father as the Officiant, a string quartet and a surprise singer for Chris who played a special song on the guitar as Maryal walked down the aisle. As they kissed and hugged their friends and family as a married couple, Maryal’s father’s classic car in that glorious lipstick red was waiting for them. Maryal’s parents surprised the couple and adorned the car with tennis shoes and soda cans just like the good old days. The car also had a stunning floral display because, well, every detail matters!

The couple chose to have their reception at the Walloon Lake Country Club, where Maryal’s family have been members for many years and where they spend every summer of Maryal’s life. The space had been newly renovated which definitely worked to our advantage. Crisp white walls, tall ceilings and an out of this world wrap around porch overlooking the lake were definitely things we could work with! Even though the rain was still coming down, the guests were able to enjoy the Cocktail Hour underneath the porch listening to live music, enjoying a few fun signature cocktails and a stunning display of charcuterie and passed appetizers. Guests found their seats via the classic Coke bottle display adorned with the sweetest royal blue gingham ribbon.

Upstairs, for dinner and dancing, the Country Club has never looked better. La Tavola linens dressed the tables in white and blush and local florals from Bloom Floral Design knocked guests’ socks off. The dinner was as locally sourced as possible, with Whitefish from the Great Lakes and produce from farms just 10 miles away. Even the drinks were local: Mawby Sparkling, wines from Walloon Lake Winery and Michigan made Bells Brewery beers. Once dinner was finished, it was time for dancing! One of their must-haves on their big day was a killer live band and that killer band had to play Motown. Well, let me tell you – Soul Xpress was even more amazing than the couple had dreamed! Everyone was out on the dance floor dancing to Otis Redding, the Supremes, Marvin Gaye and more. It was the perfect ending to the most perfect day.

Maryal and Chris’s day was so perfect because they allowed it be perfect. They trusted their vendors and when clients can let go and trust that everything will go well, an unforgettable day is bound to follow!

English Garden Style Wedding Set in Michigan

You know what I really, truly love about this wedding? These college sweethearts managed to bring an English garden vibe to the bride’s home state of Michigan. Think summertime romance set at an elegant manor, with ‘maids dressed in the prettiest pink gowns by twobirds Bridesmaid. Amy Carroll photographed and there’s much more this way.

From the Bride…Jake and I have been together for eight years, since our freshman year in college. I knew he was the love of my life as soon as I met him and I could not wait to marry him. We got engaged in New York City, where we live, and always knew we would tie the knot back home in Michigan. While that definitely came with challenges, I absolutely loved planning our wedding. I found our venue, Greencrest Manor, on a photographer’s blog and instantly fell in love. It’s set in the middle of nowhere and out of 200 guests, only a couple had ever heard of it. It was perfect for the casual-yet-elegant garden wedding we envisioned.

The amazing and slightly difficult part about our venue was that we needed to bring everything in, from the tent and tables to the catering. We spent hours doing research online and speaking to different vendors to find exactly what we wanted. It was tedious and time consuming, but we ended up with a team of vendors that we adored. About three months before the wedding we realized we really needed a day of coordinator. Hiring Emily and Claire from Polished Events and Celebrations was one of the best wedding planning decisions we made.

Because we planned from a distance, we tried to keep the DIY projects to a minimum, but thankfully my family helped a lot. My mom is an angel and spray-painted all of our candelabras gold and spent hours at flea markets looking for vintage cake stands and pie plates for the dessert table. My dad made a rustic set of cornhole boards, my sister made banners and a bunch of other decor, my lovely husband attached 150 envelope liners for the invitations, and I spent the nights leading up to the wedding hand-assembling 200 program fans.

One of my favorite parts about planning a wedding was finding ways to incorporate personal details. Our officiant was our favorite professor from college—he got ordained just to perform our ceremony and it could not have been more perfect. Part of my bouquet ribbon came from my mom’s wedding dress, which my grandma handmade. She passed away a couple years ago and she always wanted me to marry Jake, so I loved having part of her with me. My headpiece and earrings were custom-designed by my favorite jeweler, Lulu Frost. She also designed earrings for my mom and sister, which we plan to pass down to our daughters. The donuts and bagels (which we served as a late night snack) came from a bakery Jake used to work at, the cake was made by a childhood friend—I could go on and on!

The smartest thing we did was a first look. We took all of our photos before the wedding, and then as the shuttle pulled up to the venue with our guests, every bride’s nightmare came true—it started pouring. I’ll be completely honest, I was really, really sad at first. But Jake took charge and decided we should start with cocktail hour and see if the rain let up. We had a “grand entrance” down the spiral staircase, ate a few hors d’oeuvres and, thankfully, it stopped raining so we could get married outside.

Even with the rain, it was the perfect day. Our guests had so much fun dancing to the Bluewater Kings Band, our dessert table was nearly empty by the end of the night and it was amazing to spend an evening with our closest friends and family. The dress and Manolos may have ended up covered in mud, but I wouldn’t have changed a single thing.

Are Palm Leaves the New Peony? For This Chic Celebration, They Are!

After seeing endless celebrations as a wedding photographer herself, this Bride-to-be knew she wanted something a bit different for her own big day. Think chic and modern, and with palm leaves and stylish black and white decor, she got just that. This urban loft wedding is a breath of fresh air for those Pinterest boards of yours all thanks to Emilia Jane for capturing every bit! See it all this way!

From the Bride… Brian and I are originally from Bay City, Michigan but currently live in Chicago. When we walked into Loft 310 in Kalamazoo, Michigan (halfway between our two homes) we gasped. The first thing I noticed being a wedding photographer was the beautiful sunlight coming through the windows and I could instantly envision our wedding there. It very much had that Chicago loft feel and the rooftop overlooking downtown Kalamazoo was perfect for cocktail hour. Not to mention a gorgeous penthouse space in the same building that you can rent for the weekend. Once we saw that, we were sold! Nothing like taking the elevator up a quick two floors after your wedding.

As a wedding photographer who has seen dozens and dozens of weddings, I knew I wanted our decor to be a little more bold than the traditional wedding. We had decided on a black and white theme early on, but the inspiration started flowing when thinking about the florals… or really lack there of! I wanted the centerpieces to be a focal point when you walked into the room, as well as have some vertical height. As our guest list was only 115 people, I worried that without tall centerpieces the room would feel too large. We ended up using a mix of banana leaf palms and large ferns as our centerpieces and I loved the big visual impact they had on the room. When someone mentions seeing our wedding photos, they almost always comment on the palms! They were such a fun element to our summer wedding and fun surprise to our guests. Fond of Florals really made our vision come to life! There were however flowers in my bouquet – white ranunculus, white garden roses, sword fern, and of course palms. For the bridesmaid bouquets, they used hostas and geranium leaves, with a little sprinkle of white lilac.

In addition to the palms on the tables, we also placed potted ferns around the room to help make the space feel more full. Our florist kindly planted two of them in gorgeous gold pedestal vessels that anchored each end of the bar along with two candelabras. It made the bar feel so dramatic! My mom added some fun and unexpected accents to the bar. I’m a huge lover of dachshunds (Brian and I got our sweet dachshund pup Millie about eight months after the wedding) and it was a fun surprise to see a gold dachshund figurine amongst the bar decor.

To carry the black and white theme throughout the room, we purchased handmade black and white striped chargers from a previous bride, which we layered with a black napkin, menu card, and a fern spring to accent. We also purchased black and white striped runners for the tables, and had gold candelabras and candles throughout.

As for the dress, well, at one point I thought I wanted a black dress! I was looking for a dress that was elegant and stylish. But ultimately I knew I just wanted something that I felt absolutely amazing in. Once I put on my Blush by Hayley Paige dress I knew it was the perfect fit – classic yet modern. I loved the romantic waves of the skirt and the matching veil with the horsehair hem completed the look. I also purchased an adorable strapless white jumper from ASOS that I changed into after the first dance. The belt I wore with my bridal gown was the perfect addition to my jumper to make it feel more bridal. I had high hopes of also showcasing my gorgeous Badgley Mischka heels with the jumper, but by the time I changed I was ready to kick off my heels and dance. The jumper gave me more freedom to move and my guests loved that I had an outfit change!

One of the smallest, but most important details of the day, were the rings. Brian decided to wear his dad’s wedding ring, who passed away from cancer when he was 15. His parents, Jan and Fred, had a beautiful marriage and one to be admired. I know having a piece of his Dad with him not only on our wedding day, but everyday, was really special to him and myself. The ring is classic – a yellow gold band that has some light etching to it. Between the original etching and the slight scratches from the years of wear, the ring has so much character. As for me, I love the look of stacking rings, so I decided on two wedding bands – a skinny diamond band and a yellow gold band. I love being able to switch up the order of the stack or wear just the bands or the engagement ring some days.

Emilia captured the day so beautifully and we feel extremely lucky to have had such a talented photographer, and close friend, capture our day. Our wedding day was everything we hoped for and so much more, and we are so thankful to our friends and family for celebrating with us!

An All White Wedding That’s Truly Timeless

If there was ever a wedding that would have me begging for a vow renewal, it would be this piece of pretty captured by Blaine Siesser. A day complete with the sweetest pups, a decadent cake a la Sweet Heather Anne, one stunning floral arch, and a few bottles of bubbly, it’s enough to have any and every Bride inspired and/or asking for a reception re-do. See it all for yourself in The Vault!

From Blaine Siesser Andrea & Brandon celebrated their nuptials at Meadowbrook Mansion. It was a beautiful event designed and styled by Kehoe Designs. Sharing her favorite wedding memory she said: “Walking down the aisle. Seeing my groom looking at me like I was the only person in the world. Seeing our parents beaming, our friends hysterical. We both always felt everyone was always rooting for us, but at that moment we felt it.” Surprisingly, getting ready at her home was one of her favorite parts of the day. She said, “Getting ready in our home was very important to me. It felt so special to be close to all the memories that Brandon and I have shared there; to be with my sister, friends, and of course our dogs. It was the most serene wedding morning I could ever have imagined.” Her favorite photos where of “…. Us on the bridge in front of the mansion. These three photos exude exactly how we both felt about planning a big wedding. Of course we enjoyed some parts of the planning process, but in our case we actually didn’t expect all of the heightened emotions, compromises, and tensions that a big wedding could create. At the end of the day, all that mattered was that we loved each other and that was all that mattered to us. These photographs remind me of that.

Any wedding at a lakeside yacht club is destined to be pretty, but Aaron and Bianca’s Michigan day is next-level gorgeous. With a dramatic Galia Lahav wedding dress, playful polka dot suits, stunning ceremony decor and a reception decked out in La Tavola Linens, there’s nothing not to love about this day. See it all, photographed by Clane Gessel Photography, in The Vault!

From Clane Gessel PhotographyAn elegant Bay Harbor Yacht Club wedding in Petoskey, Michigan. The bride chose soft colors for her outdoor ceremony. The bridesmaids were dressed in a variety of light pinks and champagnes; the groomsmen in classy navy suits with subtle polka dots a black collar and matching black bowties, but don’t miss out on their snazzy yellow polka dot dress socks too! The ceremony had white petals down the aisle and a wooden cross at the alter. The reception was inside the yacht club decorated with gold candle holders, lit white candles, white roses to match and a variety of greens. The inside had a rustic feel with wooden signs and antique tables.

The couple met through mutual friends during their time at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Bianca’s sorority sister was dating one of Aaron’s teammates at the time. The proposal took place in Lake Tahoe, CA during a hiking trip. Aaron planned a surprise picnic on the beach. The nuptials took place on June 18, 2016 at the Bay Harbor Yacht Club in Petoskey, Michigan.

Elegant + Industrial Green House Wedding

You guys, this wedding is SO good I’m having a hard time believing that it is in fact actually real. But alas, Santiago Murillo Photography is here to prove that wedding day perfection is more than possible, because with every capture in THE VAULT this special day will have us all dreaming of perfectly pretty moments for days on end.

From Santiago Murillo PhotographyFrom the moment I first met with Melanie and Jonathan, I could already picture their greenhouse wedding to be one of the most beautiful ones that I’ve had the pleasure of shooting. From the moment I stepped into the gardens of the Goldner Walsh, I instantly knew that this was was no ordinary wedding.

The entire venue is covered with such a variety of gorgeous spots, that I was initially so overwhelmed with how many great options we had for photographing their portraits. Starting from the simple, yet very elegant industrial design of the reception hall, to the carefully placed garden accents in the greenhouse, I immediately knew that due to it’s uniqueness, this wedding would be a perfect fit for Green Wedding Shoes!

Melanie and Jonathan were such an incredible couple to work with! Both are such gregarious charismatic people, which made my job much easier as every single photography truly depicted how much love they have not only for one another, but for every single person in that wedding. It was such a joy to be able to work with both of them! Their lovely presence in each image definitely made this wedding one of my absolute favorites!

Organic Black Rocks Beach Wedding Inspiration

I had an intimate wedding and loved every bit. But I would have been happy as a clam with a beachy elopement, too. So, I’ll be saving my ideas for a seaside vow-renewal and today’s shoot from Kyle John Photography is being filed under said inspiration. Dreamy dress? Check. Pinch-me-perfect bouquet? Check. Tabletop beauty? Check. There’s even more pin-worthy goodness in THE VAULT.

From Kyle John PhotographyThere is a beach, by the edge of the wood, where walls of sharp black rock, regally tower from above ancient tree crowns into the deep pure waters by the ocean shore. Encompassed by this scape is a girl, blinding in beauty like a light that’s mirrored between the bleak rocky walls on the beach, waiting for the sun to stretch its arms above the horizon. Her delicate silk dress, draped on her body, is elegant in its simplicity. She’s refined, yet possesses a sort of wildness in her eyes. A confidence that burns like a lantern in the night. Unharmed by the piercing rocks beneath her naked feet, she conveys an unwavering strength from deep within. And as the first rosy rays embrace her on the shore, it appears to me so obviously, she is the breath of dawn, softening the treacherously beautiful landscape from which she was born.

Unplugged Nautical Lake Michigan Wedding

There are so many things I love about this wedding, but first and foremost? I love that they chose to unplug. With the most darling signage they instead invited their guests to be fully present and enjoy the beauty brought to life by Sincerely, Ginger and The Day Design. The one and only Clary Pfeiffer beautifully documented as these high school sweethearts tied the knot, and inside THE VAULT you’ll find so much more.

From The Bride…John and I met when we were 14 years old in our freshman English class. On the day we got married, we’d known each other for exactly half of our lives. It’s special when you share a common history with someone and pledge to share your future with them too. Although we didn’t start dating until the senior year of college, we’ve always shared something special. At first, I would ride my bike over to his house and we’d order deep dish pizza with friends. We took bike rides down to Lake Michigan and relaxed at the beach. During our senior year of college, our romantic relationship began. As they say, the rest is history.

Our wedding vision was centered around our ceremony setting, the dunes of Lake Michigan in St. Joe. Indeed, there was a half built home behind us…his parent’s retirement home. This wedding was about family, about the traditions that have shaped us into the people we are today. John and I got engaged at that very spot the year before. His parents were married in town. My great grandmother used to ride the ferry across the lake to spend the day at the amusement park that used to be at Silver Beach. The family’s contractor built us a platform to make our dream to get married on the beach a reality. All of the wood from that platform will be placed in the beams of the family home. We are so grateful for the history of our wedding site, and its future.

The aesthetics of the day tied the beach and St. Joe Lighthouse into everything. At the Heritage Center, we brought dune grass and lanterns in the room’s grand windows. A wonderful family friend designed a sketch of the lighthouse that we used throughout–in our invitations, cocktail napkins, and place cards. We hoped our guests would feel at home at the lake. It is our favorite place to be.

From The Bride…Our wedding day was about bringing two families together in a place that holds so much meaning to me and my family. We got married at the Frederik Meijer Gardens at a farmhouse that is a replica of my grandmas childhood home. The farmhouse reflected mine and Alex’s love, fun, comfortable and relaxed. We wanted our day to be filled with love and to be surrounded by our family and friends who have been supporting us since we started dating freshmen year in high school. The farmhouse grounds made the perfect setting for our rustic but still elegant accents. All the details from my grandmas pearls my late grandpa gave to her on their wedding day wrapped around my bouquet, to the welcome bags with Michigan made items (Vernors ginger ale, Steenstras windmill cookies, Cherry Republic candy etc.) to the monogrammed copper mugs the guests took home and the flower filled arbor we said our vows under made our wedding day special. Marrying my best friend and becoming his wife made it the day of our lives.

Rustic + Romantic Michigan Beach Wedding

First I fell for the Bride’s dress – an Amsale masterpiece – then I caught a glimpse of the bridesmaids’ bouquets followed by these pics of the newlyweds dancing on the beach, and oh well, my whole morning was out the window as I dove into Katie Kett’s pics in our VAULT. They’re packed with prettiness and bursting with smiles that can’t help but make you fall in love with these cuties – see what I mean!?

From the Bride… Ben’s family beach house in New Buffalo, Michigan, fondly known as “Camp Holland,” had been a special place for Ben and his family for nearly 30 years. Many of Ben’s childhood memories were spent on that same beach, swimming in the lake, watching sunsets, and playing in the backyard. When I came into the picture, Ben quickly introduced me to Camp Holland, and our relationship flourished there. We built many memories at Camp Holland together – hosting our friends for long holiday weekends, sharing stories around the bonfire, walking on the beach, and falling in love.

When we got engaged, having a weekend-long, Labor Day celebration in New Buffalo, Michigan at “Camp Holland” was a no brainer. And since one of our favorite things to do together is host events and entertain friends, we simply envisioned our wedding to be the best party we could possibly throw for our friends and family at a place that carried so much meaning for both of us.

Our design vision was to let the beautiful setting – Lake Michigan, the beach, and its gorgeous sunsets – speak for itself. We selected a neutral, organic color palette of blush pink, sage green, soft whites and touches of gold. I wanted to keep my dress simple, classic and elegant – lending a swatch of my dress fabric for Ben to wear as a pocket square in his suit. Bridesmaids selected their own dresses in the same neutral, blush pink color palette for a cohesive look that still showcased their individuality. The floral complemented the natural aesthetic with blush pink roses and astilbe, white hydrangea, and seeded eucalyptus. Green garlands spanned the length of the wood farm tables with rustic candelabras and bud vases filled with single blush roses.

Since Ben and I both love to ride bikes in Chicago, the basket on my Linus beach cruiser held a floral arrangement, while escort cards were loosely tied to the spokes of antique bike wheels. Ben is also a bird aficionado, so antique bird cages served as the place for guests to drop wedding cards, and a handmade wood bird-shaped cake topper complemented our wedding cake. My favorite Wisconsin beer, Spotted Cow, was served throughout the night, while guests enjoyed a dessert bar from Ben’s favorite Chicago bakery, Sweet Mandy B’s.

With an entirely outdoor wedding, our planner advised that we tent our backyard reception. While we originally dreamed of a completely open-air, “California-style” wedding, we knew Midwest weather might have other plans. And boy, were we right. Two days prior to our wedding, two huge frame tents that covered the entire backyard were loaded in and set up. The following day, massive thunderstorms blew over the lake, literally lifting the tents out of the stakes, tearing them apart and throwing them on top of the house. After a little cry and a bigger laugh, Ben and I realized we’d get exactly what we wanted after all – an open-air wedding under the string lights and stars. The amazing night of speeches, eating, drinking and dancing was topped off with an incredible fireworks show, a late-night wood burning pizza truck, and a bonfire “after party” on the beach.

For future brides and grooms, our advice is to allow yourself to laugh and not take anything too seriously. Not everything goes as planned, but life is much more fun that way.

Classic Kalamazoo Art Institute Summer Wedding

What’s not to love about a museum or art gallery wedding? With beautiful architecture, guaranteed great lighting and gorgeous art all around, it’s the perfect setting for a wedding. And when you add into the equation lovely rose bouquets, an adorable Golden Retriever and this super-sweet couple, it will definitely be a day to remember. See all the beauty captured by Paige Gabert in THE VAULT!

From The Bride… Evan proposed the night before Thanksgiving. We always go out to the bars with all of our friends who are back in town at this time every year, so he thought it would be a fun night to be able to celebrate with our friends. Evan had made dinner reservations and we were on our way when he pulled over at Bronson Park downtown. I asked him what we were doing and he said we were going to take a walk. I knew he was going to propose, and I know he knew I knew that he was going to propose! I think it made us both weirdly nervous! We just walked around the park in circles until Evan finally got the courage to get down on one knee. It was really perfect. There were a few people in the park that clapped when he was done. Then we walked to the restaurant and had a wonderful dinner, followed by drinks with both of our families! Then the bar with our friends! It was a fun night.

From Paige Gabert… Sarah and Evan were a wedding client dream the moment I met them. We sat outside of Founder’s Brewing in Grand Rapids, Michigan, drank beer, and chatted for hours. They were both such a happy, fun, loving couple. I knew that their wedding day would be nothing but fantastic. And it really was.

Sarah and Evan were married inside of the absolutely beautiful Stanton Chapel, in Kalamazoo. The windows of the chapel were a photographer’s dream, and their family and friends were so welcoming. They had a sweet ceremony, where they both expressed their love for one another, and afterwards they shared a moment in the backroom beside the doors exiting the ceremony.

Their reception was inside of the Kalamazoo Institute of Art, which is a really cool building, filled with art, color, large windows in the ceiling, and sculptures. There was a garden to the side of the building, where there was a photo booth, and a beer tent. Pretty much everything you needed for a great night. They shared their first dance, and dances with their mother, and father’s in the center of the building, under a beautiful glass art piece, surrounded by everyone they loved and cared about. It was truly a magical day.

English Garden Wedding Inspiration in Michigan

This photo shoot from Blaine Siesser is straight out of a fairytale. Once upon a time, Cotswold Cottage, built in England 350 years ago, was relocated by the Ford family to the heart of Michigan and that’s where our happily ever after takes place. With a gorgeous gown from BHLDN, a sweet cake from Sweet Heather Anne and gorgeous English-inspired blossoms by New Creations Flower Company, this inspiration designed by Luna Soiree is a dream come true. Fall in love here.

From Blaine SiesserI had been dreaming of a doing a beautiful shoot in Tuscany or the French countryside for months and when I saw Cotswold Cottage in Greenfield Village I knew that I had found that European charm and feel right in the heart of Michigan. Cotswold Cottage was relocated from its original foundation in England where it was built 350 years ago by the Ford family. With our location as the cornerstone for the inspiration we really wanted rely on the refined taste of a proper English garden wedding as the heart of our vision.

Getting ready, our bride enjoyed a window floral installation by the amazingly talented Kate Schmidt of New Creations Flower Company. Sitting there I imagined she she would have sneaked views of the guests arriving and waited anxiously by candlelight in the historic cottage. In her gorgeous BHLDN gown and hair and make up done by the amazing Aferdita Qafa we were swooning. Outside Kaeli Garcia of Luna Soiree events had styled two tables. The reclaimed hardwood tabletops fit the feel of the cottage and when combined with the beautiful gilded dinnerware we alluded to a royal British vein. She chose linens, florals, and silks that were pinks, creams, and blushes to embrace the beauty of the garden and subtle neutral tones to match the amazing stonework of the property. Sweet Heather Anne made a clean elegant white cake and the most unbelievable macaroons we had ever seen. I wish we could share one of those with you too. Finally, Alisa Bobzien Design came up with an original invitation suite and paper products that featured the elegant feel of calligraphy and beauty of watercolors. We styled these photos with alluring old keys and broaches to add an overtone of history and lineage to the images. The fruit ladder which we brought in and styled with flowers was a charming detail we were completely in love with. The dove release is such a throwback to historical wedding traditions. Besides their symbol of devotion the image and movement of the white birds really connect to movement of our bride in her gown.

Me and the whole team were dying waiting for the film to get back and we are all so happy with the cohesiveness and beauty of the whole shoot.

Rustic Elegant Greenhouse Wedding

I have a feeling greenhouses will be getting some new kinds of calls after bride-to-be’s see this rustic wedding before us.  This (ingenious) couple toasted their friends and family at Snow Avenue Greenhouse following their at home ceremony, with Justine Montigny and Alex & Tabitha Blanski capturing it all. Get ahead of what I’m predicting to be the new hotspot to say “I do” with these pretty pics right this way!

Backyard

From the Bride… Our Wedding Day was everything we could have ever dreamed of & more. Alex and I were engaged June of 2014 at our emotional going away party in front of all of our family & friends. We were leaving Michigan, the place we called home for 20+ years and moving out to Denver, Colorado so Alex could complete his medical residency. Little did we know that we started a proposal movement because shortly after we got engaged 5 pairs of our good friends drank the water & did too! All of us were planning Summer of 2015 weddings and knew it would be a whirlwind year.

I was always the girl who dreamed about her big day but not the girl who had all wedding decisions figured out and had been waiting forever for the proposal. Due to the big move and getting settled in our new home it took Alex & I a long time to make any kind of formal decision in regards to date, venue, let alone any of the details. Thankfully, I had the greatest support system in my event-planning older sister and Maid of Honor, my Mom who couldn’t sleep at night dreaming up all the pretty details, my aunt who worked tirelessly on getting our backyard into ceremony shape and all of the other family & friends who made this wedding happen. It truly takes a village and I was not even remotely prepared for all the decisions to come my way. Fast forward to late September, we still had no date, photographer, dress, nothing. I was visiting my family in Michigan when my mom asked me to run to the local greenhouse with her to pick up some pumpkins and fall greenery to spruce up her house. We pulled up to the adorable Snow Avenue Greenhouse that sat on a bed of rolling hills out in the ‘country’ of Ada, MI. I didn’t think anything of it at first but my amazing mother had the wedding on her mind. It was like a lightbulb went off as she exclaimed “let’s just do the wedding here!” I got behind this idea almost instantly as I looked around the gorgeous glass-roof greenhouse dreaming of all the spring blooms that would soon fill the space. The place was immaculate and even better the owner, Dave VanDeBurg, was so sweet and so willing to make our wildest requests come true. Snow Avenue never had an event of this magnitude but Dave was up to the challenge and we couldn’t have done it without him. We planned our big day on May 24th, 2015, the Sunday of Memorial Weekend. This was the only day that wouldn’t interfere with Dave’s business as he would be closed on Memorial Day so we had the necessary time to transform this working greenhouse into our reception venue.

We would be married in my parent’s backyard overlooking the creek where I spent my childhood. One of Alex’s best friends would be our officiant. Our biggest inspiration was that we had to be unique to standout from the 10 weddings that would occur the following summer. We had our hands in every detail of the day from my Mom & sisters building a custom fairy garden in the backyard to mimic our wedding day to designing every centerpiece to be completely different. My siblings made custom signs out of salvaged barn wood and we had some interesting Pinterest sessions constructing these yarn & glue floating balls that would hang from the backyard trees, although a messy project they turned out beautifully. Our centerpieces were meticulously designed by my Mom & sisters with a burlap runner covered in moss, topped with antiques that were collected over the years by my family who has a serious antique market addiction. The design was very elegant with rustic touches. We really wanted the day to show off our unique style all while highlighting the true beauty of the spring flowers that surrounded all of our loved ones.

The entire day was so emotional with all of the love in the air. We kicked off our greenhouse reception with a touching speech from Alex’s brother, Jimmy, our Best Man followed by a tear-inducing, unique speech my older sister, Kelsey gave filled with favorite songs from over the years that she tied to memorable moments of our relationship as sisters leading up to what shaped Alex & I as a couple. It was absolutely incredible and I am certain there wasn’t a dry eye in that greenhouse. We ate amazing farm-to-table food provided by Chef Roman & the team at Kangaroo Kitchen whose New Zealand accent all the women fell in love with. We danced to the funky fresh beats of DJ, Adrian Butler who was convinced by tipsy guests to breakout in a rap freestyle. Our day was so beautifully captured by story-telling photographer Justine Montigny who delivered the prettiest images of all our hard work & videographer husband/wife power couple Alex & Tabitha Blanski who caught on film all of the happy, emotional fun-loving details of the day. I cry every time I watch our wedding film.

One of my favorite moments was dancing with my Dad at our reception to “The Feather Song” from Forrest Gump, a movie we would always watch together growing up and a song that he hand-selected for me. As soon as Adrian started playing the track I saw my Dad and burst into tears. A wedding is so symbolic for me not only for the life-long union you are making with your soulmate but for the meaning behind your Dad giving you away to the new man in your life. It is like watching life come full circle in the best day ever and sharing that with all of your closest loved ones.

A lot of brides hire some type of wedding planner or day of coordinator to help execute all of the million little things that come up when putting on a wedding. In my opinion I had the best team out there because it was filled with all of the people who supported & grew with our relationship. It was very stressful given my lack of planning but our families never gave up on Alex & I. This wedding was such a hit and we owe it all to their hard work. Knowing they busted their butts for months out of the love they have for us means the world and we could not have put on this fabulous day without them. We love each and every one of you!

Elegant Ann Arbor Michigan Backyard Wedding

If you can think of a better way to begin a marriage than with a sentimental celebration in your parent’s backyard (complete with anemonesSweet Heather Anne and rustic touches), I’d love to hear it. Because as far as I’m concerned this Ann Arbor fete is downright divine. Kelly Sweet captured at home elegance and with Hey Gorgeous Events behind the day, and it’s a gallery that gives meaning to home is where the heart is.

From the beautiful Bride… I have always held a special connection to my parents house. It’s not only where I grew up, but it symbolizes an innate sense of comfort and support. Holidays and events at home have always been so special to me. Knowing this, Matt proposed to me on Christmas Eve of 2013 at my parent’s, surrounded by my family. Matt and I had been together for 7 years prior, so after the excitement of taking this next step together had settled, it didn’t take long for us to decide that the wedding should be held at my parent’s home. Convincing my parents to host 200 people in their backyard took a bit more time… Enter Rhiannon.

Rhi entered our lives and immediately brought a sense of calm to the whole event. I had a vision of what I wanted the night to look like, but Rhi truly brought it all to life. We envisioned a unique, elegant affair that our guests would still feel perfectly comfortable at. A subtle color palette, rich textures, and a touch of rustic materials came together perfectly for the day of. We worked with our paper company to create a black and white floral motif for our invitations, which translated perfectly through the whole event. Rhi even had a custom linen created for our cake table with the pattern.

I asked my bridesmaids to pick a gown in a shade of cool gray, veering towards blue. I hadn’t seen all of the dresses together until the morning of the wedding (which is SO unlike my Type A self) but I couldn’t be more impressed with how they all came together. We kept the guys classic with black tuxes and bowties. Rhi was able to bring in a soft blue tone in our florals, and was even able to find black centered anemones for my bouquet, which had been previously unavailable.

Looking back at our amazing photos from the day, I am so pleased to see how Kelly captured everyone’s pure joy. Matt and I are grinning ear to ear in every photo, and it’s a true testament to how perfect the day turned out. We are so grateful for such a special memory that we will always cherish.

Rustic Chic Estate Wedding in Northern Michigan

After deciding to tie the knot in the tiny Northern Michigan town where they fell in love, this darling duo let nothing stop them from having the “I Do’s” of their dreams — from having La Tavola linens flown out from CA, to buying the silverware and decor they couldn’t rent, to DIYing ceremony signs from old barn doors! Tec Petaja captured it all to perfection, and you won’t be able to get enough in the gallery here!

From the beautiful Bride… Jonathan and I were living in NYC when we met through mutual friends at a Christmas party. He grew up in Manhattan and went to school in Philadelphia, I grew up in Michigan and went to school in Arizona, so when we got engaged the biggest decision was…where? We had a specific vision for what our wedding would be and our number one priority was choosing a meaningful location. I grew up spending summers in northern Michigan and took Jonathan there to meet my family shortly after we started dating. That weekend was the first time he told me he loved me, and in the 6+ years we’ve been together it has been a place of nothing but happy memories. It became even more sentimental after my father passed away in 2012, because it was one of his favorite places to be. Getting there is not easy and the reaction of most of our friends was … “You’re making me fly to Michigan?” But we knew once they were there it would be worth it.

This is dedicated to all of the Brides out there who want to throw a stylish, personal and unique wedding on a budget in a small town. I live in New York City where you can rent or buy pretty much anything you want at any time. When we started our research every venue and rental company we found in Michigan felt generic, cheesy or expected. Even at the risk of giving my mom a nervous breakdown, we had our hearts set on having everything outdoors. We were close to accepting that we might not be able to do what we want “up north” when we came across photos of an outdoor wedding at a home in Boyne Falls, just minutes down the road from my family’s cottage growing up. The perk of a small town is that everybody knows everybody, and that photographer was nice enough to connect us with the owner of the private property. As soon as we saw it in person we knew nothing else would compare.

Being a Graphic Designer and Art Director, I’m a bit of an aesthetic control freak. The first decision I made was our photographer, Tec Petaja. He shoots film, has an amazing eye and when you look at weddings he has photographed you feel like you were there. I wanted someone who would capture the authentic moments of our day, and he did not disappoint! As a bonus, he lives in Nashville but is from the area and appreciates it as much as we do.

Having an outdoor wedding on private property means you bring everything in, and when we started calling rental companies I felt discouraged. We wanted our decor to feel inspired by the venue: natural, rustic and the perfect balance of casual and elegant. Every company seemed to have the same options and nothing felt unique. So what we couldn’t find, we bought (silverware, napkins, runners, miscellaneous decor) or had made (the ceremony arbor), which is not as extravagant as it sounds when you get resourceful and creative.

We found wood from old barns that had been knocked down and made all of our signage, and bought chalkboards with coupons from Hobby Lobby for menus. My mom and aunt sourced vintage mismatched silverware and coordinated each and every place setting to be the perfect mix of patterns. We searched all of Michigan for farm tables before connecting with Ben at Fancy Fray who had just started building 20 of them. We called every rental company in Michigan to find chairs that looked rustic. (“Those old ones you have in the garage that you don’t even advertise? Yes, that’s exactly what we’re looking for.)” Linens for our serving and cocktail tables came from La Tavola in California, which we assumed would be over budget but was comparable to some of the options we found locally. My advice to Brides is to make as many phones calls and do as much research as you can, because these days there are no limits to your options. We also had a number of rental companies interested in expanding their assortment because we insisted that updated options would be worth the investment. I was able to sell most of what I purchased to our vendors. You never know until you ask!

Jen Haf at Bloom Floral Design was our florist and so much more. We immediately connected and she really made sure she understood our style and vision. She was reassuring about the ability to pull it all off in an unconventional venue and went above and beyond to partner with us on decor choices and coordination with other vendors. We went with a neutral palette that beautifully complemented the venue; lots of greens and textures arranged organically. We mixed wooden boxes with interesting small vases in different materials, and did tons of simple votives for candlelight. Jen also worked with the caterer to decorate the food display with mixed vases of leftover flowers from our welcome party on Friday night. If you find a vendor that you really connect with don’t be afraid to ask them if they can help you in other aspects beyond what they do. These people have worked on hundreds of events, seen it all and therefore are your best resource.

We talked to a number of caterers who warned us about the complexities and costs of serving food at an outdoor location, and at one point considered pulling the plug because it seemed like too much. Dan Kelly on the other hand told us we could drop him in the middle of a corn field and he’d be able to feed 500 people. He helped us build a unique and non-traditional menu for the cocktail hour and dinner buffet that included things like grilled cheese bites with tomato soup, mini BLT’s, local whitefish, a baked potato bar and fresh veggies. The food display was important to me and Dan was incredibly accommodating, allowing us to provide dishes and serving pieces of our own even though they all weren’t the most functional. Boyne County Provisions helped us complement the vibe with a mix of wine, liquor and craft Michigan beers. We weren’t interested in the traditional things like bouquet toss or wedding cake, and instead opted for individual key lime pies for dessert from our favorite local cafe.

We exchanged hand-written vows under a custom made arbor and were married by a dear family friend, which made our ceremony special and personal. Our music was simple and beautiful, played by a Spanish Guitarist, and two of my cousins sang a song together. One of my favorite parts of the day was hearing speeches from my Mom, MOH and our best man. Later in the night our caterer served grilled pizzas and guests warmed up by the bonfire with s’mores and sparklers after the sun went down. Our band played mostly Motown and we danced until 1am.

All Brides know that planning a wedding can be like a full time job, and with a different budget I might have opted to pay to have a lot of it done for me. But as we looked around us that day it felt that much more special knowing all of the love that went into making it happen. It was a lot of work, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way. While planning I looked at blogs and couldn’t get over how idyllic so many of them look in photos. You don’t see pictures of the bathroom trailer that had to be parked behind the tent, or the tire tracks that one of your vendors carelessly left in the mud. It’s important to realize that there are things you won’t be able to control, and letting go of some of those will allow you to enjoy your day.

As perfect as ours was for us, a lot did go wrong. We lucked out with the weather but it was questionable in the days leading up as an electrical storm blew through Wednesday and Thursday. The ground was very wet, but as some friends put it, that only added to the fun because people had to go barefoot. (Those are the kinds of guests you want at your wedding!) Because of the rain we had to swap our layout and a bunch of family ended up at the wrong tables. We lost power in the tent for about ten minutes before dinner was served. But those aren’t the things that people remember, so don’t sweat the small stuff. The imperfections are sometimes the best part. Prepare as best you can, make it personal and let go of the rest on your wedding day, because you only get one shot and it is over before you know it.

Whimsical Mackinac Island Destination Wedding

What comes to mind when you marry the genius of Clary Pfeiffer with the mastery of LoLo Event Design? Just one thing, utter perfection. A charming day awash with island-inspired whimsy, the gallery is chock-full of minty green wedding details galore. Beginning with the Bride’s jaw-dropping JLM Couture LWD gown and ending with a romance filled evening, you can see it all unfold here!

From Clary PfeifferToday I’m submitting a wedding with a really fun bride and groom that wanted something different for their guests. They selected Mackinac Island where there are only horse drawn carriages for transportation and a landscape of quaint houses. My favorite is the ceremony where the guests sat in rocking chairs overlooking the river. Below is more for the couple.

Sara and Aaron’s love story crisscrossed multiple cities and countries so when they decided to say “I do” it was only fitting that they host a destination wedding. Sara, who grew up in Illinois, spent her childhood summers vacationing on Mackinac Island in Northern Michigan. The quaint island has held onto its charm by forbidding cars of any kind. All transportation is, very romantically, via horse-drawn carriage. Given Sara’s love of horses and the outdoors Mackinac was a dream destination to host their closest friends and family.

To unveil their wedding location LoLo Event Design partnered with stationary designer Lynn Graham Designs and Toile illustrator, Denise Spoenlein of Custom Illustrations to create a custom invitation suite. Denise created a custom toile pattern that told the story of how Sara and Aaron met, dated, came to be engaged and ultimately be married. Even their beloved dog True was featured in the design. The toile pattern was ultimately featured on the save the date, invitation, ceremony program, menu card and welcome gift.

As guests arrived to Mackinac Island they were welcomed with a canvas tote bag filled with local Michigan goodies and adorned with a luggage tag featuring the toile pattern. Family and friends explored the island before departing via horse –drawn carriage to the rehearsal dinner hosted by the groom’s parents at a restaurant deep in the woods.

Come wedding day Sara and Aaron enjoyed a private carriage ride around the island before walking down the aisle. The intimate ceremony took place on the infamous front porch of The Grand Hotel. Guests were seated in rocking chairs with views of Lake Huron. Sara walked down the aisle in a JLM Couture gown carrying a custom bouquet constructed by LoLo Event Design of a leather horse lead.

Following the ceremony Sara removed the long skirt of her JLM Couture gown to reveal a knee length look. Guests were invited to a private dinning groom within The Grand Hotel where they were welcomed by a jazz pianist. The kelly green and robin’s egg blue tabletop was designed to compliment the eccentric interior of the dinning room. Custom candelabras finished with gold tapper candles became the focal point of the table. The place settings featured a menu card designed around the couple’s toile pattern, which was wrapped with a personalized leather engraved belly band place card. Guests lingered over their choice of a vegetarian or meat tasting menu. Sara and Aaron shared a love seat at the head of the table. For dessert everyone was invited to the hotel’s ice cream parlor for their choice of sundae, Sara’s personal favorite.

Romantic Blush Pink Michigan Wedding

Admittedly, it doesn’t take much for me to fall in love with a wedding. Show me a happy couple, and I’m smiling from ear-to-ear. But there’s something about this wedding captured by K. Holly Photography that I absolutely adore. Maybe it’s the lush, romantic flowers or maybe it’s the Groom’s teary reaction to seeing his Bride for the first time, but to be honest, it’s a bit of everything. Take a peek at all the gorgeous images and you’ll see why I’m swooning.

From K. Holly PhotographyMid-summer along the water. Warm bright sun, with the outdoor ceremony shaded under the trees. A palette of blush pink and soft whites, the tiniest hints of peach and lavender, and just enough silver to sparkle. And joy in everyone’s eyes, smiles and cheers on everyone’s lips.

Some weddings have the most incredible venue as a backdrop, and some are full of magazine-worthy details. Some weddings have the most adorable couple you’ll ever see. Some are blessed with perfect weather. Some receptions have the most fun and crazy dance parties you’ll ever shake your groove thing to.

And then there are days like Amanda and Trevor’s. Where the stars align and everything comes together like a storybook. The kind with gilded edges, pop-up pictures, and an ending that sweeps you off your feet. The kind where your photographer twirls in the middle of the dance floor with you, just as blissed-out as the rest of your guests as the sun slowly dips below the tree line and makes the whole world glow.

Amanda and Trevor met in 6th grade, and new this day was in their future. They planned a picture-perfect country club wedding, and celebrated under the sunset with friends and family from all across the country.
