Tips for a Chic Home
September 20, 2015
Interior design is subjective, but one thing is for sure—when it comes to design ideas, The Tig is the place to go. And today, they teamed up with Alyssa Kapito & Vivian Muller, of eponymous NY based design firm, Kapito Muller, to share their tips on five easy upgrades that will make your apartment effortlessly chic. These ladies were just included in the round-up of 7 Design Stars to Watch by Domaine Home, and between contributing to Domino Mag, plus flexing their home makeover muscle in Lonny, they couldn’t help but give us Tig tots a few tips as well.

1. Accessorize Your Bookcase

The most important thing to remember when styling your bookcase is that shelves don’t necessarily need to be filled with books alone. Bowls, boxes, trays and artwork look fabulous mixed in and will give your shelves a wonderful “collected” vibe. We love to turn a couple of books on their side to create additional surfaces to top with accessories. Try to spread the accessories evenly throughout, while still keeping things just a bit asymmetrical so that it doesn’t feel too contrived.

2. Mix Your Metals

Don’t be afraid to mix your metals. Gold, silver, copper and bronze all go great together and we think that the contrast makes things so much more interesting! If your place is all brass hardware, throw in some nickel accents or a dark bronze lamp. Here we hung nickel sconces above a gold leaf console table.

3. Invest In An Eye Catching Accent Chair

An accent chair can totally elevate your space. We love to use something with a unique shape or a sculptural quality. Just one will do the trick, so you can take your time to find the perfect choice with lots of character. Flee markets and antique stores are a great place to find something that’s really unique and interesting.

4. Swap In Some Fun Graphic Accent Pillows

Nothing updates your space like a fabulous accent pillow, and they are a great way to pull in some color or texture. Luckily, there are so many wonderful websites that have tons of gorgeous pillows ready to ship, which makes the process a lot easier and quicker than ordering custom. Our favorites right now are cut velvet pillows or ones with a fun geometric pattern.

5. Organize Your Clutter

Nobody loves a messy desk! We love to organize clutter in beautiful boxes and trays. Try mixing different materials, like marble and leather boxes for a really luxe effect. We also love floating shelves, for extra books and leather catchalls. They don’t take up much space and look fabulous.
