Colorful Home Tour

In all honesty, when it comes to my taste in interior decor, bright and white is typically the name of my game. But every once in a while, a space infused with color will land in my lap and it's all I can do to convince myself not to totally redecorate. And Krista's home tour? Well it's done just that. It's bright and preppy and exactly what we need on this cold wintry day!  Oh, and you best believe there's more.
From Krista... Our home is a typical builder grade house. When we originally moved in 2003, we thought that we would live here just a few years and eventually “move up”, because that's what everyone else did. However, we ended up loving our house, neighborhood and neighbors.
One thing I didn’t love: our kitchen. We had a budget of $16,000 and something had to be done. We started by painting the cabinets black. Since we were painting the cabinets anyway, we had some shelving units built at the end of our countertop and island to create additional storage. We also installed tongue and groove boards on the ceiling, which added so much character to the space! Since the renovation, we have slowly replaced appliances one by one.
Right after the kitchen renovation was complete, I hung the Nama Rococo wallpaper in the family room. The two rooms are adjoining so having black on each end wall balances out the space really well. I had our fireplace retiled a few years later after finding the perfect mother-of-pearl tile.
The living room and dining room are also adjoining, so I had to be very careful to make sure that they complemented each other nicely. The first thing I did was paint the dining room black. True story: my husband came home from a business trip and asked, "wasn't our dining room red?" I loved the red dining room for so long, but at the time everyone and their mother had red dining rooms and it no longer "flowed" with the black infiltration that was occurring in my house.
Next I painted our dining room console bright green for a little pop of color. I think we have at least a touch of green in every room in our house; I love adding a touch of green to every room; it brings a sense of life and balance.
Next up, trying to find a yellow fabric for curtains to tie the two rooms together. After months of looking, I finally decided to design my own fabric, so I had my favorite artist stencil a medallion print on the most buttery, yellow linen that I could find. I created the wall of intaglios for under $200.
If you read my blog, you know that I have an affinity for butterflies. So I thought a wall of butterfly art was perfect for this room. I searched and searched for the perfect wingback chairs and finally scored them on Craigslist. Then we had them reupholstered in the perfect turquoise linen.
This brings us to Lou's Room. Her room is small, and it was time to move her out of her toddler bed. I wanted to use as much of her existing furnishings as possible to save money. Mission accomplished. We kept her curtains, glider and convertible dresser, which had actually been a changing table at one point. We had just inherited my childhood daybed, so I painted it and added it into the design. We framed Ikea bookshelves with molding to give them a "built-in" look around the daybed. We had stripes painted on the ceiling and a custom chandelier made. I added some affordable touches like this HomeGoods mirror project, iron-on LOU pillows and some Ikea Ribba frames above her bed. With that, the room was complete!
After Lou's room was finished, her older sister E was jonesin' for a new space of her own. She requested a pink and purple theme -- I had seen pink and purple combinations, and they never ended well. I needed it to be a room that she could grow into.My first source of inspiration was the Mariska Meijers ikat pillows. This was the perfect balance of pink and purple. We mimicked the same purple wash in the background of the pillow on the walls. We also added a desk and the rocking chair that I scored for $20 on Craigslist. My favorite pieces in the room are the purple bench (another HomeGoods redo) and the oversized picture of my girl.
The guest bedroom is one of my favorite rooms in our house. It's so simple and clean, with just the right pop of color. The inspiration piece in this room was the Vera scarf that is hung over the bed. Then each element came layer by layer.
The secretary's desk was another Craigslist score that was moved around to several rooms in our house before finding a home here, just in time to paint it. The pink pillows, bedside tables and most of the accessories? All HomeGoods.
I had to be careful with the infusion of red in this room because the more red we added, the less calming it felt. Therefore, I chose to stick to simple white bedding with subtle pops of color.
Our back porch was built last summer. I had no specific inspiration piece here, but I just knew I wanted a mint green and coral color scheme. The first declaration I made was that the ceiling had to be mint. Everyone thought I was crazy, which only fueled my desire.
We were able to repurpose a lot of furniture from the interior of our house, and bought almost everything else at... you guessed it: HomeGoods, as well as Ikea and Etsy. I did splurge on the two head chairs at the table. We painted them two shades darker than the ceiling to make them pop.
We have spent more time on the porch in the last few months since it was completed than we had in the entire 11 years we lived here!
