A First Birthday Party

My daughter's first birthday was serious business. My sweet son's first birthday was $.99 margaritas at a Mexican restaurant. For us, not him clearly. Which was way more fun than organizing the petting zoo and making little labels for every last detail. But...didn't really hold the same magic as my daughter's pink wonderland. So if I had to do it over again, I would do it up big for him. Just like this loving mama did for her sweet Aubrey. Complete with a pre-birthday photoshoot to capture her perfection in all it's 1 year old glory. Click here to see the whole spread!

For Aubrey's first birthday photoshoot we set up a little studio in our apartment with our striped wall as the back drop. I stuck with the color palette of peach, gold, and, ivory that we were already using for the design aesthetic for Aubrey's party. I wanted to create an environment that even my active one year old would find captivating. After seeing a post on hankandhunt.com I was inspired to create the floating heart garland. I cut out and attached paper hearts to the ribbons on the balloons. The effect was magical. She was simply stunned when she woke up from her nap to find balloons and heart decorating our living room. For Aubrey's cake smash I made her onesie with the heart on front and number one sewed on the back as well as her sweet little tutu.

Aubrey's birthday party was quite the DIY spectacle. After choosing the venue, Market Bistro, I fell in love with the giant chalk boards displayed in this rustic farm to table bistro on Long Island. The invitations were letterpress printed by my husband and I on black card stock with white and peach inks. Aubrey's favorite stuffed animals are her owl and bunny so we made sure to incorporate those on the invitation and throughout the event. Tags were printed for the burlap wrapped milk bottles used as flower vases for each table. We incorporated a bold chevron pattern throughout which you'll see on the printed items as well as the placemats and on her home made quilted happy birthday banner. Each table also had a special box with an accordion style fold out list of all of Aubrey's favorite things. We've been thrilled to watch her grow and change over the past year and thought that sharing her most loved experiences with her family and friends would be a great touch at her party. What first birthday party would be complete without a milk and cookie table! Petite vintage milk bottles were displayed with striped straws and "Happy 1st Birthday Aubrey" flags. All of Aubrey's young friends were able to sip milk and munch on their favorite sweets. The take away gift for the guests were yummy and chic chevron striped "1" cookies. The kids also took home Sesame Street and Dr. Suess board books. Perfect for small hands and inquisitive minds.
