A Classic Wedding at Chateau St. Georges in the French Riviera

Grab your passports because this stunning wedding is taking you straight to a fairytale chateau in Grasse, France (also known as the perfume capital of the world!) Guests watched the adorable couple exchange vows in an indoor ceremony overlooking the French Riviera and dined al fresco at tables dressed to the nines with floral from Wayne Riley Flowers. Audra Wrisley Photography captured the celebrations perfectly and Wanderlust Wedding made sure the day went off without a hitch. See the all the magic at the full gallery, voila!

From Audra Wrisley PhotographyFrancophiles Ashley and Dustin worked for the same company, and there had been so much pressure built-up by people who told them they would be such a perfect match, that Ashley cancelled their first date because she was too nervous. Fate decided otherwise, and six years later Ashley & Dustin were engaged during a sunset drive up the coast of Monaco.

They decided quickly that the only place they could envision themselves tying the knot, would be in the French Riviera, and they invited an intimate group of friends and family to celebrate their marriage with them in the country of love. With the guidance of Wanderlust Weddings they selected the stunning Chateau St. Georges as their venue, right outside Grasse, the perfume capital of the world. Dustin went out the day before their wedding to create a custom scent for Ashley at perfume house Molinard – a perfect gift to remember their wedding for years to come.

Embracing the elegant beauty of the chateau, Ashley and Dustin wanted to accentuate the amazing architectural and natural details and chose gold accents, french blue linens, lots of candles, and dreamy florals in ivory and greenery. Expertly designed by Wanderlust Weddings, their wedding day carried a classic french tone with a modern twist, which perfectly exemplifies their style.

Ashley and Dustin decided to have their wedding ceremony indoors, in front of a gilded window overlooking the countryside of the French Riviera. The intimate setting provided an incredible backdrop with an asymmetrical floral arch, lots of candles and ghost chairs as to not detract from the beauty of the space, The guests were moved to tears when the couple read their self-written vows, and the tears continued to flow during the beautiful toasts to follow. For the ceremony, Ashley wore a classic Anne Barge gown and later changed into a stunning Eve of Milady dress for the reception, and she wowed everyone when the couple joined their guests for dinner after a few sunset portraits on the terrace. Dustin wore a beautiful white dinner jacket with his tuxedo, and the bridal party wore black tuxes with the ladies accompanying them in gorgeous gray-blue dresses from Jenny Yoo. Music was provided by the acoustic band The Jukes, who welcomed their guests to a 5 course al fresco dinner under cafe lights, and had everyone on dancing under the stars until the early hours of the morning.

Romance and Twinkling Chandeliers on the French Riviera

Nestled in the French Riviera, Chateau Diter played host to the dreamiest destination wedding designed by Laly Rose with planning by AAVA Wedding. See the full gorgeous evening under the stars and twinkling chandeliers all captured by Love Story.

From the Event Planner…Shula and I met a few years ago when I worked on her brother’s wedding that took place in Villefranche-Sur-Mer. Shula and her fiancée (at the time) were based in London but had fallen in love with the French Riviera. At the top of their agenda was a space that would cater for their 250 guests who would be arriving from all over the world. Shula had decided that she wanted her wedding to be curated with a sweet and romantic theme at the heart of it. Both modest people, Shula and Kenny wanted an elegant and sophisticated reception with no expense spared on the comfort and care of each and every one of their guests. The emphasis was put therefore on the finer details that would make for impeccable comfort and enjoyment for their guests at every point throughout the occasion. Besotted with each other, Shula and Kenny opened up their love to us and we were able to share in their magnificent and moving ceremony under the marquee in the gardens of the stunning Chateau Diter. The reception after was held in the secluded cloister gardens, followed by dinner below crystal chandeliers in the 400sq foot tent, which was designed exclusively for their wedding. Not even the clouds that had posed a gentle threat at the close of the ceremony could have disturbed the wonderful moments shared under the stars. This wedding, even with the weight of a very large logistical operation to manage and coordinate (with more than 120 staff involved) and militarily precise planning, ran exceptionally smoothly. This was a wonderful achievement that we were able to share with really beautiful people.

From the Decor to the Menu, This Provence Wedding Is All Natural

This destination wedding in Provence, France, was natural and organic in every way – from the decor to the menu! Wanderlust Wedding enhanced the beauty of the villa using a light color palette complementary to the lavender and olive trees found on the property, and Angelika Fürstler put together a delicious, completely vegan dinner for guests to enjoy at the reception. Gert Huygaerts Fine Art Photography was there to capture the day, and it’s all waiting for you right here.

From Gert Huygaerts Fine Art PhotographyWith this authentic and intimate destination wedding, we would like to share the utterly romantic day of Sylviane and Adam in the gorgeous surroundings of Provence. The private villa with its olive trees, traditional building style, and gorgeous swimming pool was the ideal decor for a both organic and sophisticated wedding day.

In the morning, the couple and their guests gathered at the ancient church of Grasse, where the couple exchanged their vows in a traditional ceremony. For the reception and dinner, Lisa and Franck from Wanderlust Wedding managed to create a truly romantic Provence atmosphere by working with the beautiful and natural elements the region has to offer. Thinking of lavender as a detail throughout the day, amongst the olive trees – what could one expect more from Provence? Adding the floral skills of D’Amour et de Deco was the perfect finish of this beautiful day. In the same organic and natural style, the stationery was created by Niceplume in an amazingly beautiful greyish-purple color scheme.

Having a vegan reception dinner with a delicious menu by Angelika Fürstler, the organic accent continued throughout the day, from refreshing and natural lemonades to lavender champagne and a wedding cake by Citron Pavot.

Working with vendors at a high quality level definitely was a big plus at the wedding. It helps take away the stress and guarantees good service at all levels.

You’d Never Guess This Indoor Wedding Was Their Backup Rain Plan

For those that feel a little rain will ruin your big day, allow us to showcase the prettiest villa wedding that just so happened to be a backup plan. For it was a flawless ‘Plan B’ that quickly had this couple covered, meaning the ceremony moved indoors (which turned out totally romantic) and they forwent alfresco for covered candlelight. It’s incredibly beautiful and truly convincing that love can brave any storm and we’ve got it all captured by Brosnan Photographic in The Vault!

From Brosnan PhotographicAllison and Tim chose to get married in the South of France at a beautiful private villa just outside Grasse. Unfortunately, as the weather turned to rain the morning of the wedding a quick back up plan was put into place and the ceremony and reception were moved to covered areas in the pool house which actually worked a treat. By the end of the day the sun came out for a beautiful sun setting session. France offers amazing light for portraits.

From the Bride… Our journey began as neighbors when Allison, the bride, was 11 years old and Tim, the groom, was 13. We first officially met playing ‘Man Hunt’ in our neighborhood, and years later in high school Tim AIM messaged Allison “Will you go out with me ;)” and our love story began! A huge part of our journey together has revolved around adventure and travel. Between living in New England, New York, Florida, and Sydney Australia we have made countless homes but have always known our true home is wherever we are together. We have traveled around the world creating our love story, so an intimate destination wedding was a natural choice for us. The romance, color palette, and timelessness of the South of France drew us to the location. Our venue, Villa Le Castelet, nestled into the hillside of the Cote d’Azur surrounded by olive trees, vineyards, and citrus trees with stunning views of the valley, became the stunning backdrop for our celebration.

Planning our wedding while living in Australia was daunting, but we found the perfect company in Marie-Emilie and her team at Mon Plus Beau Jour to ease the stress. Marie-Emilie captured our essence in all the details, seamlessly organized our perfect day, and helped gather the literal Dream Team of wedding vendors. We could not have celebrated our wedding with such joy and effortlessness without the help of Marie-Emile, her team, and all the vendors we had the pleasure of being surrounded by on that day.

We chose the talented Christina from Brosnan Photographic to photograph our wedding. Christina’s photographs encapsulate the soft and romantic light that the South of France provides and each image is quite possibly more beautiful than the next. Her calm nature and approach left us feeling relaxed, which led to stunning photographs portraying our true selves. Sebastian from MotionCraft Creative complimented Christina’s photography with artistic and masterful cinematography…and let’s not forget his video drone that stole the show! Sebastian’s unobtrusive approach allowed for great candid moments.

We have the absolute best friends and family who flew from all parts of the world to celebrate our love, and we are forever grateful to everyone who took this journey with us. We spent an unforgettable week at Villa Le Castelet together, every day filled with sunshine. However, rain storms rolled in the morning of our wedding and we lost power in the afternoon while my ‘maids were getting their hair done (!), but that didn’t stop us! Who doesn’t like dancing in the rain?! They say you can’t untie a wet knot, so we channeled positive energy to create an even more beautiful day than originally planned.

Marie-Emilie swiftly and seamlessly put into place our “rain plan”. Our lovely florists, Studio Mondine, transformed a covered terrace on the villa property into a whimsical and romantic ceremony venue. White chairs lined with greenery complimented the stone walls of the terrace, leading to a perfect arbor of greenery to complete the intimate space. It was important for Tim and I to personalize our ceremony, so having Tim’s father as our celebrant allowed for the dialogue to be candid, thoughtful, and full of memories. We hand picked instrumental songs – including the theme song of “Gladiator”, our favorite movie, which was perfectly executed by a pianist and violinist while Tim stood with his groomsmen. “Here Comes the Sun” by the Beatles played as I turned the corner arm in arm with my dad, and quite literally the sun came out from behind the clouds at that moment. It was epic and magical.

Cocktail hour was held by the pool and our ears were filled with the angelic voice of Lizzy Parks accompanied by her talented musicians. Scrumptious canapes and cocktails by the spectacular team from Chef a Domicile were served in a wonderfully bright and fun set up by Mon Plus Beau Jour with a fresh fruit market stand as our escort display.

Our dinner was held downstairs under another stone clad terrace that was transformed into the most elegant, romantic, and intimate setting thanks to our dream team. Every detail was in place with stunning floral arrangements of blush, cream, soft greenery and a pop of yellow complimented by candlelight and filled with love! We were lucky to spend the week eating delicious meals prepared by Lori and her team at Chef a Domicile, and even more lucky that Lori and her staff were more than caterers. They were friends, helpers, and joy bringers and the beautiful meal they served for our wedding was the perfect culmination of all their efforts. We for-went a traditional wedding cake and instead “cut the cheese” – our cake was made of cheese wheels. The perfect late night snack – am I right? Parfait!

Let’s not forget the party! DJ Thomas Dusseune brought down the house spinning music from all decades to create the perfect atmosphere. Our first dance transitioned from Otis Redding into Michael Jackson -inviting the dancing machines that are our friends and family to the dance floor! It was the perfect ending to this magical adventure. Our friends and family cannot stop talking about every single vendor – from the food, the decor, the flow, the detail, the music – it was all a hit. As Marie-Emilie put quite eloquently “Rain cultivates growth in all things” and our wedding day, although full of rain, cultivated growth in our friendships, our love, and our marriage. We know that we will continue grow together with joy, romance, and of course adventure.

Villa

From Miss Gen Photography… Provence is an area that is close to Moya and Jamie’s hearts, so it’s where they decided to celebrate their wedding with friends and family from all over the world. The South of France was the perfect setting for this wedding, an outdoor ceremony and reception full of sunshine, champagne and lavender. The colour scheme was inspired by the beautiful French countryside.

Moya and Jamie had a romantic ‘first look’ before the ceremony so they could share a few moments alone before all the guests arrived, this was also a lovely opportunity for some portraits in the beautiful gardens.

Moya’s uncle travelled over from Australia to officiate the outdoor ceremony in the gardens of Bastide St Mathieu. Followed by drinks by the pool and a delicious dinner created by Ben Spalding, the executive chef at Aqua Shard in London.

Moya wore a stunning gown by Australian designer Gwendolynne and Jamie wore a British designed suit by Ted Baker.

The olive grove, lavender and the beautiful old chateau provided the perfect backdrop for this gorgeous destination wedding and it was a pleasure to photograph!

From The Bride… There were a few reasons why Jamie and I choose to get married in the South of France. The idea of a destination wedding had always appealed to us, we love holidays with friends and as I am Australian and Jamie English it meant the world to have all our family and friends in one place for as long as possible. We went to the Cote d’Azur on our first holiday together and said at the time how wonderful it would be to bring loved ones back there if we ever got married – so just over two years later that’s exactly what we did!

We spent a lovely long weekend driving around visiting venues both on the Riviera and further inland in Provence, leaving Bastide St Mathieu until last as we had fallen in love with the pictures on the website and sure enough, paid our deposit immediately. The house and gardens were even more beautiful than the pictures, Soraya was a wonderful hostess and we could instantly imagine having our celebration there.

We did a lot of the initial research and planning ourselves, but as we lived abroad and neither of us spoke fluent French we got the help of a local planner, Natalie at Wedding Angels in Nice. Her knowledge of local suppliers and help on the day were priceless, and really took all the stress out of the planning.

The Bastide formulated our vision for the day. We wanted the flowers and decorations to complement the house and grounds so kept the colours fairly neutral with grey Watters bridesmaid dresses chosen with one of my maids in NYC and then made to measure as the other girls were in London and Brisbane. We went for herbs and lavender on the tables coupled with white flowers all potted in silver and grey pots with silver tea light candle holders. I had a white peony bouquet with lambs ear detail that I had originally seen on pinterest and was brought to life perfectly by Wayne Riley Flowers. Jamie had a ranunculus boutonnière with lambs ear, while the bridesmaids and ushers carried/wore fresh lavender and baby’s breath.

My maid of honour actually found my wedding dress! We got married within a month of each other and she had tried it on at Luella’s Boudoir in Wimbledon. She said she knew straight away that it wasn’t the dress for her, it was the one for me! She was right, and Gwendolynne in Melbourne did such a brilliant job! The dress is called Hope and I absolutely love it. Jamie got his suit, tie and shoes from Ted Baker here in London and looked so handsome.

As we weren’t able to be legally married in France we had the wonderful opportunity to really tailor our ceremony to be very personal. We asked my Uncle to be the celebrant and chose readings that really resonated with us for my sister and a good friend of ours to read. It was very special.

We both really love our food and asked a chef based here in London if he would consider catering the wedding for us. The result was a really sensational meal that people are still speaking to us about but also threw up a fair number of logistical challenges! I am so happy with how it worked out, but would recommend others think quite long and hard about the stress/reward ratio of doing something a bit out of the box! The added bonus of having our chef come from London is that we could get our cake made of rounds of cheese from La Fromagerie in Marylebone.. one of my favourite afternoons of wedding planning was going there to select our cheese – delicious! It also meant the “cake” provided midnight snacks for anyone peckish later!

We love our music also, having been to lots of gigs and festivals together, and one of the fun things about a relatively long engagement (15 months) was putting together playlists for the day – one for as guests were arriving, the cocktail hour, dinner, and suggestions for the DJ for after dinner. We really enjoyed this, and have some great playlists for dinner parties to come! For the more ceremonial moments we picked songs that were meaningful for us – they’ll be ones we listen to forever:

Processional: First Day of My Life – Bright Eyes
Recessional: You’ve Got the Love – Florence + the Machine
First Dance: Islands – The XX

We spent a long time deliberating on what to enter the reception to, and in the end picked a song that we both just find really fun – Call Me Al by Paul Simon. It led to one of our favourite moments, a giant sing along with the entire marquee standing and dancing for almost the entire song!

We could not be happier with our choice of photographer and videographer. We knew as soon as we saw Miss Gen’s work that she was the kind of wedding photographer we wanted – she has an amazing eye for a beautiful shot and a way of capturing people and moments that have really brought our day to life afterwards. Irene Piera Film’s work is fabulous too, everyone we have shown our wedding video to says it really feels like you are back there, and we feel so lucky to have such a brilliant memento of the day – especially the speeches and ceremony which really flew by!!

Ultimately, what made the day so special was making promises to each other in front of our friends and family, and it’s definitely important to keep sight of that as you’re planning. It was so special for us to have guests from all over the world together for at least the day – some we were able to spend the whole week with – an experience that we are unlikely to ever have again and we truly cherish. Enjoy every second!

French Riviera Wedding at Chateau Diter

I’ve been lost in these gorgeous image from Brosnan Photographic longer than should admit this morning.  I mean, does it get any better than a wedding in the French Riviera at a chateau like Chateau Diter? It’s like a fairytale. And with Lavender And Rose at the design helm, it certainly played out like one. See the entire day here.

From Brosnan Photographic Vicky and Adam chose the French Riviera to host their wedding. Chateau Diter in Grasse has an incredible landscape. The newly renovated French chateau has an Italian flair and is set among the rolling hilly Provence landscape. Vicky, Adam, and their guests enjoyed stunning scenery while sipping on bubbly and watching the sun set during the open air dinner under the stars.

With every moment happening on site, Vicky and Adam created a relaxing day and their ceremony in the gazebo overlooking the french hills was utterly breathtaking. Apart from Vicky’s sweet custom made dress, the talented ladies at Lavender & Rose Weddings created and coordinated all the beauty.

Vintage Inspired South of France Dream Wedding

As a self-professed Francophile, I’ll be the first to admit that this sun-drenched South of France fête totally made my heart skip more than a beat or two. From the hand painted watercolor and calligraphy on the invitations from Signora e Mare, to the final departure of the Bride and Groom in their amazing getaway car, Lavender & Rose pulled out all the stops. Get lost in the entire dreamy gallery from Xavier Navarro here!

From the beautiful Bride… François and I met at a (now closed) bar in Paris called Footsie. We had no friends in common; it was totally random. My girlfriend and I were planning to go to a bar down the street, but said “Hey there are some cuties in this one, let’s check it out…” François is from Paris and I was in Chantilly (a small town outside of Paris) for an internship at the time. It was December 2008.

We had a long (almost 3 year) engagement, and thus plenty of time to ponder all sorts of destination weddings. Maybe too much time for second guessing and Pinteresting… It came down to France or New Orleans, which is our favorite American city. I had contacted venues, photographers, etc in New Orleans when my mom asked me what I “REALLY, REALLY” wanted to do. Getting married in France just seemed like such a fairytale. I wasn’t sure we could pull it off… and I wasn’t sure anyone would come! But with the help of our great wedding planner, Kerry Bracken of Lavender and Rose, and all our great vendors, we did. We didn’t have any particular reason for choosing Grasse except that we found a venue we liked and we knew we were fairly likely to have good weather in late June in that part of the country. We also considered Bordeaux, as François’ mother is from there (and we are winos), but for the weather and proximity to Nice’s airport, we chose the Cote d’Azur.

I had a bachelorette night the Wednesday before the wedding. When else am I going to have a chance to go out with girlfriends in Cannes?! Friday night before the wedding we had a “Soirée Blanche” cocktail/ welcome party. Everyone wore white, we had copious amounts of rosé, oysters and beautiful food at a beachfront restaurant in Juan-les-Pins. It could not have been more perfect. The weather, the sunset, seeing our families meet for the first time, the jazzy voice of Lizzy Parks…I couldn’t believe just how fabulous it was!! It was great for the French and American guests to meet, laugh, and break the ice before the wedding day.

Saturday morning we took it easy with massages by the pool. My bridesmaids came over around lunchtime. We hung out, had champagne, lounged and just got ready slowly. The wedding was supposed to start at 6:30, but the vintage pink Cadillac I was arriving in broke down. It was hilarious and I’m so glad our fabulous photographer, Xavier Navaro, was riding along with my mother and I, so he was able to capture our emotions and laughter as we watched the locals try to get the car running. The timing worked out perfectly. The ceremony began right at 7pm and the church bells starting chiming as I walked in the church with my dad. Perfect! (I should mention that our gorgeous, simple, rustic church was built in the 12th century. I was adamant about being married in a church–and we were thrilled to find one that would perform a Protestant, multilingual, modern wedding ceremony.)

François and I put a lot of thought into our ceremony. While we didn’t write our own vows, we did say our vows in each other’s language– I said mine in French and he in English. We had meaningful readings done in both languages by friends and family, and chose songs from the Beach Boys, Fleetwood Mac, the Rolling Stones, Cat Stevens, Procol Harum and James Brown. Additionally, we had all of our groomsmen and bridesmaids sign our marriage certificate, which was a special moment. Our priest, Peter Madan, is British and perfectly bilingual, and made all our guests feel welcome by alternating between French and English.

A few more details that stand out would be that we had our guests greet each other with “bisous” and hugs–it made the atmosphere very warm. We also had flowers placed in the seats where François’ parents would have been seated (they are both deceased). And my bridesmaids were stunning. Each one had a unique look with different dress styles, fabrics and colors and each bouquet was especially made to complement each dress. I LOVED how it turned out. We kept the decor in the church simple and understated. Lots of white pillar and votive candles, along with huge urns full of olive branches.

Although we didn’t get married in New Orleans, we did incorporate my favorite NOLA tradition, the second line. Upon leaving the church, guests were given hankies to wave in the air as we marched behind a fabulous New Orleans-style jazz band to “When the Saints Go Marching In.” I doubt the town of Valbonne had seen such a sight…

Our reception started with a cocktail hour around the pool at Bastide de Valbonne. Guests enjoyed more spirited jazz music, French 75s, and passed appetizers. There was a beret wearing caricature artist making the rounds and a pétanque court for our more “sporty” guests.

We had a seated dinner, which also served as the time for toasts. The French give the BEST speeches at weddings–I am always impressed at the thought that is put into preparing and delivering very sentimental speeches. Our tables were named after the places we grew up and then places we have lived and traveled over the years. I couldn’t get over the tablescapes created by Wayne Riley, our florist. He totally “got” our vision and we were stunned at how beautiful the tables were–gray candles, lavender, bright peonies, wild arrangements and single buds in small vases. Our menus and table names were hand done by Katie Hyatt of Signor e Mare. She is a gem of a calligrapher, and also created our custom wedding invitation suite and crest.

After dinner we cut our macaron tower, and it was time for dancing. Our first dance was to “Beast of Burden.” Not traditional, but I am obsessed with Mick Jagger and we love the song. Sappy isn’t for us, and this worked. We went for a DJ because we wanted a dance party with no breaks and only our favorite tunes. For added lubrication, we had an absinthe bar, which was a big hit. Much to François’ chagrin, I also had jager bombs reminiscent of my college days. The party went until 4 or 5 in the morning, and true to form, we were the last ones on the dance floor.

Sunday we had a very casual farewell brunch in the afternoon. A great bluegrass band played and guests dined on delicious burgers from a local food truck, Camion de Sophie. We had Bloody Mary’s and margaritas (my mom’s favorite) and enjoyed recounting the previous night’s antics.

Our family friend and well-known Birmingham artist Bob Moody created a custom watercolor painting of the church where we got married. I had the idea to use it as an envelope liner, giving guests a preview for how the wedding would look and feel. It was just gorgeous and now the original painting hangs in our bedroom.

I loved the idea of having a custom crest and Signora e Mare created one for us to use on all of our paper products. It incorporated a frog (for the Frenchie), an elephant for me (the Alabama fan), lavender (for the wedding location), and cotton (for the South). I picked out vintage postage stamps to represent the France/US relationship/alliance. There were stamps with Grace Kelly, Lafayette, Thomas Jefferson, Ernest Hemingway, Nina Simone and Bartholdi, the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty. Also, each invite was in English, but included a vellum overlay of the invite in French. I wanted every aspect of the wedding to be a “mélange” of French and American culture. At times I felt I was getting way too into the weeds on these details, but I’m glad I did.

Americans, and especially Southerners, want to make sure wedding guests feel special, welcomed, and taken care of throughout the weekend. We put together welcome bags for our guests that included a bottle of rosé, local olive tapenade and crackers, water bottles, a burlap bag with our crest monogrammed, a custom map of the wedding weekend events, a very detailed welcome note from our wedding planner with all logistics, recommendations, etc and a hand written note from me. We also included a unique vintage postcard from the Cote d’Azur in each bag and asked guests to write their wedding advice/wishes on it and leave it at the reception. I happened to find the postcards at a junk/antiques store in Birmingham. I bought every postcard from the South of France from about 1910-1930. We plan to make these postcards into a guest book of sorts…

The inspiration for the absinthe bar came from the fact that François and I drank absinthe together the night we met…and we continue to toast the anniversary of our meeting with absinthe :) We wanted to recognize our family members who are no longer with us and include them in our wedding. I had my grandfather’s wedding band tied onto my bouquet with a handkerchief that belonged to my brother-in-law’s grandmother, who was a kind of mentor to me. Our wedding programs included a favorite love poem of my grandmother, who loved poetry.
