From the bride… We met in a small hospital in New York. Where we instantly meshed and quickly became each other’s person. He’s a doctor and she’s a nurse, but more importantly we love adventuring traveling eating and laughing with one another. The proposal was at our favorite New Jersey restaurant, an elegant spot with live music, on the Hudson overlooking the Manhattan skyline shortly before we moved from New York to California. We have a deep love for the ocean and nature and wanted that to be a focal point of our wedding. He is not religious and has always considered the ocean as his temple. We wanted our guests comfortable, The women in flowing dresses. The man in slacks, loafers and tieless. Over the last two years many of our friends who have been getting married have had repeat delays because of COVID, with mounting stress and perpetuatal angst with wedding planning hanging over their heads – we were not going to fall victim to this. We enjoyed our engagement without any pressure to plan a wedding long in advance, which suits our spontaneous nature. Being in the health field we were really paying attention to COVID case counts and when we started to see it dropping we realized we had a window… we set the countdown timer for 2 Months to plan everything. At this point not having had all our family together in two years, we knew we all needed to get away, have a vacation and decompress. As surfers and having never been to Hawaii, we knew we had a destination wedding to plan, the rest is history.

Having to plan this wedding in two months I was happy to find my dress at a bridal shop in San Diego. I fell in love with it at first sight. The beaded details, off the shoulder straps, and the simplicity of it all. I knew I wanted to dance so didn’t want a dress that was too heavy. I also couldn’t believe how fitting the dress was on me. Traditionally the bride doesn’t show her outfit until wedding day. We decided that could go both ways. The groom went with a custom fit suit, from Suit Supply in San Francisco, tailoring everything down to the last seam and button with the light blue exterior and a pink accenting interior. He also had her new, married name embroidered in his suit jacket. For the florals we used a cream palette, accenting the white dress. He is the youngest of 5 boys. His mom has collected various pieces over the years, and intends on gifting each of his brothers a unique piece on their wedding days and in doing so, creating heirlooms. His mom studied French and has collected a lovely vintage ring box from France. Although I’m a Native Brooklynkye, I have Haitian heritage and speak Creole… making the French connection to the piece a natural one. We wanted our ceremony to be classic and simple. A Wooden arch and chairs for the foreground.  We recognized that we wouldn’t have to do much for the background allowing Maui’s natural beauty to speak for itself.

We’ve always been a couple that goes out and can dance for hours and historically have had the most fun at weddings where people were dancing all night, so it was really important for us to achieve this in our wedding. In these strange times, having had one week of vacation with all of our family and friends was priceless. We’d like to share with other couples planning their day that always choose each other first. Recognize the time is flying, slow things down and enjoy the moments, in the blink of an eye the wedding will be over and you’ll be saying goodbye to your guests.
