It’s the personal touches that make a wedding truly special, and this sweet California fête is full of them. Take, for instance, the ceremony procession. The Bride’s brother learned to play her favorite song on the ukelele and walked behind her down the aisle as his partner sang along. Another? The vintage china and Champagne flutes, sourced by the Bride’s mother so that each place setting was truly unique. From The Bride…Since Matt is from Australia and we were planning on having a fairly large contingent of overseas guests, it was really important for us to find a venue that had on-site accommodations for at least a portion of our guests as well as grant us access from Friday-Sunday. We really mindful of the fact that this would probably be the only time we’d have all of our family and friends together at one time.
In terms of the actual wedding, we wanted the venue and aesthetic to be unassuming and laid-back. We placed a lot of emphasis on sourcing a high quality food vendor (we ended up using one of our favorite restaurants) paired with local beer and wine, chosen by Matt. In hindsight, the extra money we spent on a highly-recommended DJ company was one of the best investments we made. We wanted guests to have a great time and tell other people it was the best wedding they had ever been to :)
One detail that added a very special touch, and that many guests commented on, was that my mom spent over a year individually sourcing unique pieces of vintage china and champagne flutes, such that every place setting was different. The champagne flutes also served as escort cards and gifts for our guests to take home. She also sourced the votives and vases used through out the venue.
Know where you’re willing to compromise in order to spend more in other areas. Although I really loved the idea of letterpress invitations, I realized the money I’d save on less expensive designs could be used towards paying for an awesome DJ.
Additionally, from the outset Matt and I had a very clear vision for the weekend, and made sure that all of our decisions were in line with that vision. Our focus was on providing space for our friends and family to spend time together and for our overseas guests to meet our stateside guests – this was one of the reasons why we decided to serve dinner family-style.
It’s easy to get caught up in the details, but stepping back and reminding ourselves of what we wanted the weekend to feel like was really helpful. From the casual BBQ the night before the wedding, to breakfast burritos on the Sunday morning after, we wanted to make sure our guests had opportunities to spend time together and enjoy the amenities the venue offered. There are so so many!
For the procession, my brother learned to play one of my favorite songs on the ukulele while his partner sang. They ended up walking behind behind my parents and I as we made our way down the aisle; it was really touching and special to have my family around me as I walked towards Matt.
The speeches from my dad, maid of honor, and best man were all the perfect combination of sentimental and funny.
One of our favorite memories from the reception was when the DJs played Wonderwall by Oasis and our guests gathered around Matt and I in a big circle, with everyone singing along as we danced in the middle.
