How To: Elegant Wedding Waves

As nervous as I was to take on the challenge, I did my own hair on my Big Day. Definitely not something I recommend for everyone out there—the pros know best and can make it a whole lot less stressful! But if you’re more comfortable with your own styling process and can allot the time you need, it can be the right choice for you. This stunner style from Belle Mariee Artistry is where it’s at if you’re looking for lengthy elegant waves. Get the step-by-step below (or if you want to be pampered, give them a shout)!

Start with clean super dry hair. For this bride’s hair I started with lots setting spray, (Kevin Murphy’s anti-gravity spray) and use a large comb to evenly distribute.

Next, take large sections of hair (think 6-8 sections all together, one on top, a section on each side, one for volume at the crown, and 2-4 in the back depending on your hair’s thickness.) and wrap them around a 1/2 inch curling iron or wand. If you don’t have a wand, just use your curling iron without the clamp. Let the section wrapped around the iron get nice and hot (about 20 seconds). Pull out the iron and wrap the warm section you just curled into a large roller. Continue until your hair is set in the large curlers. I use Kevin Murphy’s curlers but an old-school curl clip would work almost as well.

Once your hair is in the rollers, let it cool completely, about 20 minutes, maybe longer or shorter depending on your hair type). When your hair is cool take the rollers down and finger comb through.

This is the time to add come volume at the roots with your favorite powder and a little back brushing (teasing) at the roots and all over. I used Kevin Murphy’s powder puff and then took each section and back brushed with a boar-bristle brush. Then spray all over with a flexible hold hairspray. Brush out your back brushing leaving some in the crown area for volume.

You may pin back the front if you desire or add a flower crown for the prettiest touch. The setting spray and process of heating and then completely cooling the air work wonders for getting hair to hold the perfect wave that lasts long into the night.
