Behind the Scenes with Amsale

From the barely there backs to layers upon layers of tulle, Amsale’s latest collection left me wishing for multiple gown changes on my own special day. The woman epitomizes style, and it extends to every one of her designs. Sorella Muse got a sneak peek of Amsale at work, and we uncovered just what makes this bridal legend tick.

SMP: Tell us how your got your start in the bridal industry.

I got my start right after my wedding in 1985. I was looking for a very simple gown for myself and thought “I can’t be the only person searching for this.” It was then that I started a small custom business.

SMP: Did you go to school for fashion design?

Yes, I did go to school for fashion design, but I first received a degree in political science then went on to study fashion at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

SMP:  What was the moment you realized you’d “made it” in the industry?

The first moment I realized I had “made it” was when Katherine Hepburn came to my apartment for her niece’s wedding. It was so special. But I also have to say that I loved seeing my first Amsale editorial in print.

SMP: How do you stay inspired for each collection?

The collection often is an extension of the previous season. I start from an inspiration board to create a feeling and then once I have an idea I start choosing fabrics. Fabrics play an important role in designing, but you have to remember to stay true to who you are.

SMP: What is your favorite article of clothing you’ve ever designed?

My daughter’s first birthday dress!

SMP: What trends are we going to see in bridal this year?

Brides are very individual and I wanted to reflect this in the collection. This season, Amsale is even more soft than before with hues of delicate color.

SMP:  What are three things every woman should have in her closet?

The perfect LBD, nude pumps and a fabulous clutch.
