Some weddings just seem to be effortlessly beautiful, where every detail appears to fall into place as if it’s always been there – yet you know it is the result of hours and hours of planning. From the Bride...I always thought Matthew and I would be married in the fall. Fall is my favorite season, and we had met two years earlier at the beautiful October wedding of our dearest friends. Soon after he proposed, however, we started venue shopping and quickly learned that most fall weekends were booked a year in advance. We found the Atrium at Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Vienna, Virginia and learned they too were booked up for the fall, and the following spring as well, but had just one Saturday still free in April 2014. We booked it, and immediately our spring wedding started taking shape.
My favorite detail of any wedding is always the flowers. Once we picked Meadowlark, the beautiful gardens both in and around the atrium quickly became central to our vision for the day. We live in the Virginia countryside and love being in the outdoors, so we wanted our wedding to reflect the organic, earthy aspects of a garden while still feeling elegant. We found Bergerons Florist and together came up with the idea for garden-box centerpieces filled with tall, loose arrangements of flowers. For colors we went with garden greens and soft shades of peach to add a little pop and contrast.
The linens were Rattan Wheat from Party Rental, Ltd. It reminded me of fancy burlap- it was soft to the touch and had a little shimmer, but still had that earthy burlap look. We selected simple ivory napkins to compliment.
The bridesmaid dresses were from J. Crew. I primarily picked them because of the color; their “dusty shale” is a soft, mint-gray that to me was equal parts earthy and elegant. Matt suggested the gray suits for the groomsmen and we agreed that would complement the dresses nicely and feel a little lighter for the spring affair. He found the suits at Men’s Warehouse—buy one, get one free—so the four guys split the cost of only two suits and it ended up being cheaper than renting four tuxes.
A lot of little details from our wedding—including our cake topper, table numbers and welcome sign—came from an Etsy shop called The First Snow. I don’t remember how I originally stumbled across the shop, but it’s filled with amazing, floral-inspirited paper goods that matched our wedding vibe perfectly. I started by just purchasing the cake topper, and slowly realized it was those little details that would tie the whole look together. So I went back. And then again.
And then, of course, we needed a photographer. You may not have access to the amazing Stephanie Dee Photography as we did, but my only advice on choosing this vendor is to find someone you are truly comfortable with. You will share some of the most intimate moments of your wedding day with this person; they will capture the moment your sister buttons up your wedding dress, and the moment your husband first calls you his wife. Don’t pick your photographer based on their packages or years in the field; pick the one who you want present during those moments; that’s the one will get you the best photographs.
