From the Bride… While we are both originally from New Brunswick, Jérémie and I met in Ottawa, Ontario through mutual friends. Four years later, Jérémie proposed during a trip to Paris. It was perfect, and we wanted our wedding day to be just as special.
We knew that we wanted an intimate, vintage inspired wedding in my hometown of Moncton, New Brunswick. We also knew who we wanted as our photographer. We had admired the whimsical quality of Evan McMaster’s work and had long known that he would be the perfect person to capture memories of our special day.
In preparation for our wedding and the many DIY projects ahead, I bought a sewing machine and signed up for a sewing class. I had always wanted to learn how to sew and thought my new skills would come in handy for our wedding. They really did! I collected fabric from thrift stores and started sewing bunting banners that we draped throughout the tent at the Magnetic Hill Winery, where our wedding reception was held. I also sewed a doily banner for the entrance to the barn (where a wine and cheese was hosted), burlap cones for the pews in the church, white linen pocket squares for the men, a burlap ring pillow, and a little seersucker bow tie and suspenders for our four-year-old ring bearer.
Other DIY projects included making moustache sticks for photo props and our photo booth, and using kraft paper tags and black card stock for making table numbers and an advice banner. We also collected numerous decorative items such as mason jars, glass milk jugs, scrabble letters and burlap coffee bags from a local coffee shop.
Seeing how we were planning our wedding from another city, our family and friends were very helpful in meeting with vendors and finding larger items that would have been too difficult for us to transport. They helped source vintage items such as old frames (for chalkboard signs), wooden crates, vintage doilies and an old suitcase (for wedding advice). My mother-in-law made burlap table runners and added embroidered sheer fabric with scalloped edges below the waist of the bridesmaid dresses from H&M. The result was beautiful and allowed my bridesmaids to feel comfortable with the length of their dresses. My mom helped us pick the perfect combination of flowers from Costco, which we used to assemble our bouquets, boutonnieres, centrepieces and ceremony/reception floral arrangements. This took much longer than anticipated but was a fun activity with the help of our family and friends. Although most of our flowers (roses, spray roses and baby’s breath) were ordered from Costco, I ordered a few special flowers (garden roses and peonies) for my bouquet from a local florist.
While all of these details helped to make our intimate wedding beautiful, our guests and the love our family and friends have given us is what really made our wedding day so memorable.
