Huron Substation Wedding Full of Color

Kick those heels back and get ready for a color explosion my friends. A really well crafted, beautifully executed color explosion by Sitting In A Tree Events with citrus colored flowers by Twig And Twine. It has a bit of boho and a dash of modern along with a food spread by Heirloom LA fit for the best of dinner parties. Oh and lots of gorgeous images by Jen Huang too. See them all here.

And because this wedding is way too cool to just have one little ol’ film by SharkPig, it has two. First up a little ditty of the day and second a dance off that had the whole office shimmying in our chairs. Push play on these gems…

From the Bride… Matt and I met while attending business school at UCLA. Our first 2 years of dating were a whirlwind of new travels, new cities, new friends, new jobs and lots of fun. So when Matt asked me to marry him on the beach at the very moment the sun rose over the Pacific Ocean on Christmas Day 2012, it was the easiest “Yes” ever. Of course I will spend the rest of my life with my favorite person ever.

From the first day of our engagement, the advice came pouring in. However there was only 1 nugget of advice that stuck with both Matt and I, and it was the driving force of our wedding planning: “Pick the one thing you care about to focus your attention on; Let everything else be what may.” For Matt, it was the music. For me, it was the food. And, my god, did Michael Antonia of the Flashdance, and Heirloom LA rock our worlds on our wedding day. For everything else, we chose who we felt were the very best vendors in their category, shared our vision from the start, and just empowered them to do their craft. It made for so many amazing surprises on the day of our wedding!

Tori, of Sitting in a Tree events, Nicollette of Heirloom LA and Heather of Twigs & Twine were so amazing to work with because each of them celebrated our vision once they saw and fell in love with our venue (Huron Substation) just as we had done. We loved the intimate, industrial space of Huron and wanted to contrast it with a whimsical color palette and lots and lots of personalized touches.

Matt is Jewish and we were getting married around Rosh Hashanah, where it is tradition to give apples and honey to ring in a sweet New Year. So Tori improvised to have peaches and honey as our takeaway gifts. I’m from Wisconsin, where cheese is a standalone food group, so instead of having a traditional wedding cake, we had a cheese wheel cake that Nicollette expertly pioneered with Matt Poley. Tori even surprised us on the day of our wedding with personalized pencils (with our wedding hashtag #meetthekerbels) on them so guests could fill out their personalized Mad Libs to give us advice as a married couple! Everything that day was so us. It really made it feel so special.

The wedding day was a whirlwind, as they always are, but my 10 (!) bridesmaids were my rocks, as was the amazing Tara of Make Up Therapy, who worked magic on me, my mom and my mother-in-law. Wade Koch of Flashdance was our unbelievable videographer, who documented everything from me practicing (and sobbing through) my vows in my bridal suite, to us Harlem Shaking on the bridal party bus, to our first dance and the most epic dance party of all time (DJ’ed by the brilliant Michael Antonia of the Flashdance). I’m usually so awkward on camera, but he made us all look relaxed and like the fun never stopped. And it really didn’t. Despite the fact the LA had a heat wave that day, everyone partied until 11:30, when Matt and I led the hardiest down the street (holding flags that Tori had made that read “Beers & Tacos This Way”) to have an after party at Footsies and $1 tacos next door.

It was an absolutely perfect night, and I owe everything to Wade and one of my best friends from college, Jen Huang of Jen Huang Photography, for capturing every single moment of it. We now have the pictures all over our home as a constant reminder of what a real life fairytale it was.
