Bohemian Backyard Wedding in Venice Beach

This wedding makes me want to throw a party.  Or, you know, wish as hard as I can that I was friends with this bride and groom, so I could have attended their day of boho chic awesomeness.  I’m talking a backyard affair crafted by a talented team of vendors with too many amazing details to even count.  It’s perfection, lovelies.  See it all captured by onelove photography right here.

And even more sweetness from Fruitful Films… awesome.

From the Bride… Our Bohemian Backyard Bash in sunny Venice, CA was about as eclectic and as artsy and as home spun as our many loved ones. The day was full of award winning photographers, filmmakers, producers, dancers, actors, screen writers, musicians, journalists, designers, and agents — all bringing their talents for partying in style. Even those who don’t identify as “creatives” kicked off their shoes and embraced the art of true beach living. It only made sense then that we rented an Airstream with a turquoise camper, borrowed a dear friend’s side car (thanks “Sweet Sidecar, Dude!”), made cardboard “Choose Love” signs (thanks “Borrowed BLU!”), sourced bongos + cowbells + sparklers (thanks big brother David), and asked our guests to parade from the ceremony at Big Red Sun (a modern, rustic, organic landscape and design studio on Rose Avenue) to our family’s private home off Abbott Kinney, for a Food Truck and dancing reception (thanks Bordergrill + The Flashdance), all under the twinkliest of twinkle lights. Pure magic captured by onelove photography, Fruitful Films, A Light Wedding, with our own Super 8 filmmaking in between (The Legacy Boutique).

Our style was definitely homespun and boho chic, mixing bronze and rattan chargers with gold rimmed china, rose glassware and gold flatware, all set atop burlap on reclaimed wood tables with floral designs by my dear childhood friend Aliza (Hedges Designs). We set up a long row of five hand constructed picnic tables alongside a long row of low floor pillows, benches, industrial stools, and eclectic rugs for a homey, indoor/outdoor, casual luxe feel. Cozy and conversational and just the way we like it!

I’m pretty obsessed with all things Free People, House of Harlow, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, BCBG, and Planet Blu. Looking outside of the wedding world, staying true to what our interior design style was, helped to keep our day feeling original and familiar to who we really are. We chose our family’s backyard after having had so many parties under the stars there, well into the wee hours. We knew everyone would feel at home and the recent remodel made for a fun reveal.

Favorite moments of the day: Eating quinoa fritters and fish tacos all together, shoulder to shoulder with my momma and so many guests, swaying and singing “Lean on Me” is a moment I won’t soon forget. Or the Dreamcatchers that we had strewn about. They’ve always held deep meaning and I knew I wanted to incorporate their sentiment and their style into the day. Rather than have my bridal gals carry bouquets, I invited my dearest chicas and moms to each hand make their own dreamcatcher at the shower. The idea being not only to use them at the ceremony (and later to decorate the cake table) but to turn them into a baby mobile one day. Even now they hang in our bedroom and remind The Dreadman and I of all the love and support we’ve known, and will continue to know as we move through our marriage, in good times and bad. They’re a handmade touchstone and keepsake.
