A white tented reception is a no fail approach to a classic wedding. From the Bride… Though we live in New York, my family and I had gone to Cherokee in South Carolina to celebrate holidays over the past ten years.
Cherokee is a 300 year old plantation which is now a private club. We had 70 of our nearest and dearest stay with us for three nights. Guests were able to play golf, shoot sporting clay, ride horses, get massages, and sit by the pool. We loved the natural beauty of Cherokee which is one of the main we reasons we chose the venue.
We worked with a wonderful planner, Ellen Robinson of WED, who is based in Charleston. My vision was elegant, black tie affair, Great Gatsby-esque but with a modern ease. I envisioned the color scheme fitting in with the natural beauty of Cherokee. The dinner menus were soft green, and the colors of the flowers were lavender, pale pinks and creams. I found inspiration on various social media sites, including Pinterest. The dining tables were varied in size and shape, but all were topped with exposed antique wood, to give a nod to Cherokee’s history. My goal was to have a balance of elegant sophistication and Southern charm.
As a further nod to South Carolina, the starter for the night was shrimp and grits. The entrée was beef, and all of the wine was provided by our family friend Joe Donelan, of Donelan Family Wines.
Our centerpieces were a mix of highs and lows. The highs were white tulips, and the lows were a mix of creams, soft pinks and purples.
The menu was circular, the size of the plate, and in pale green. The menu had an image of one of Cherokee’s live oaks on it with hanging Spanish moss; I have loved the tree forever and now it was on my wedding menu!
All afternoon it looked like it was going to rain right before the start of the ceremony.
It luckily held off but then came down in buckets during our cocktail hour. Guests ran under the tent, center pieces toppled over, but after 30 minutes it all cleared and turned into a beautiful evening. The best photo from the day was the most unexpected; it was us running to the tent in the rain under an umbrella.
