On its own, a mountainside wedding in BC is pretty spectacular. But add in a gorgeous bride rockin’ two gowns (one in a crazy cool sherbet hue!), bundles of DIY details and a dapper groom in a bow tie and it goes from “spectacular” to “outrageously awesome” in about two seconds flat. From the Bride… We love the outdoors, so it was without a doubt that we both wanted our wedding to be outdoors. We think the Rockies are the most amazing place on earth, nothing even compares to our Alberta mountains. Emerald Lake Lodge became apparent after our first meeting with our photographer, Orange Girl. Through her portfolio, we fell in love with the Lodge before we laid eyes on it in person. I quickly made a visit out to the Lodge a week after the meeting. Prior to this, I had never been to the lodge, although I had heard over the years how beautiful it is. The moment I walked across the bridge, I knew in my heart that this was the right place. Surrounded by mountains, an emerald-colored lake, cozy lodges, and an outdoor hot tub. I wanted to have our special day in this magical place.
To be honest, I was never a fan of orange until I met Kirstie. Orange really pops, it’s refreshing. My inspiration came from the weddings that Kirstie featured on her blog. I secretly checked out her blog a few dozen times, realized that orange would have to be the perfect color, especially for a fall wedding in a rustic venue like this. I love robin egg blue color also, and I thought it was a great compliment to the burnt orange rustic theme I was going for.
I made all the decorations myself and enjoyed every bit of the whole process. I made the pinwheels ahead of time and put them on the fence around the wedding ceremony at 6am that morning. Got the burnt orange flower and put them down the aisle. We hired a guitarist to play some songs during our ceremony. All the colors on my decorations tie in nicely with the autumn colors in the mountains. The guitar music itself speaks for the simplicity we wanted.
We both really enjoy outdoor activities like biking, canoeing, snowboarding. To us, having fun and doing things together means bonding. Therefore the bike decorations (ring box, invitations, wish tags, book stand), our canoeing picture and getting married in the mountains! We bike even when we travel, be it Paris or Barcelona. We are also very private people, thus a small wedding with only immediate family and close friends. Simplicity is the key, no loud music or slide show. We wanted to unplug ourselves from the ‘city’s stressful lives’, so we decided to just hang our pictures on the fireplace. I collected the pickle jars and milk glasses throughout the year and use them as vases for our centerpieces. Wrapped them with a piece of lace gave them a rustic feel.
I decided to go bold and tried on a sherbet colored dress and I fell in love with the princess look instantly. I mean, who doesn’t want to feel like a princess on their wedding day?
